Family parade helps mark local resident’s 95th birthday By Ron Giofu While the family and friends of Veronica Laing were not allowed to gather together and celebrate her 95th birthday, they tried to do the next best thing. A parade of roughly 20 or so vehicles travelled a short distance down Front Road South Friday morning, many decorated with birthday banners, balloons and streamers, to celebrate Laing’s 95th birthday. Laing watched the parade from her porch alongside her daughter Leslie Geiger with a smile on her face and waved to the well-wishers that passed by. “It’s really nice,” Laing said from her porch. Laing said she was surprised by the outpouring of love and support she received, “especially when we’re all stuck at home” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Laing was born and raised 95 years ago on a family farm/hotel with parents Eugene and Olympe Reaume and grew up with six siblings. The hotel was known as the Reaume Park Hotel, became the Lakeshore Tavern and was also known as Classics on the Water. According a handwritten biography provided by her daughter Linda Murray, the property Lain lives on was part of a family homestead. She demolished the original house which dated back to the late 1800’s and built a new home on the same site 12 years ago. The new home was built by her son Steve along with the help of many other family members. Laing married her husband Donald after he returned from his service in the Navy during World War II. They had 11 children and five were still living at home after Donald passed away in 1976. She was also a caregiver for her invalid mother and older sister who also lived with her. Being a caregiver is something Laing also did as a career. She was a graduate of the Hotel-Dieu School of Nursing in 1946 and was a well-respected and dedicated nurse. She was the head nurse in chronic care as well as head nurse in the emergency room for 20 years before her retirement at age 63. “After she retired from nursing, she dedicated her time doing volunteer work with local charities,” Murray

She was also honoured as the Citizen of the Year during her years of volunteering. Laing stated she is thankful for her healthy children. In addition to her 11 children, she also has 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Long-term care facilities hanging in and dealing with COVID-19 pandemic By Ron Giofu

Local retirement and long-term care homes in Amherstburg are doing their best amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re actually managing well as of right now,” said Laura Scott, vice president of best practices and innovation as well as the acting executive director at Richmond Terrace Long-Term Care Home. Richmond Terrace’s supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) is fine at the moment, she noted. “At this point, our PPE is stable,” said Scott. “We’re managing well with what we have.” Scott added there are policies in place for staff regarding PPE. Visitation to Richmond Terrace is being restricted at this time, she added, though noted arrangements can be made in specific instances if a patient is in palliative care. The visitors that are allowed under those specific circumstances would have to wear PPE and undergo a screening process, Scott noted. Staff also has to undergo a screening process by clinical clerks to enter and exit the building, she added. “We’re working very hard to keep all staff and residents safe,” Scott said. The public is encouraged to write letters to the residents in lieu of visiting and people can mail them to the longterm care home at 89 Richmond St., Amherstburg, ON,

N9V 1E7. Scott noted the recreation staff has been “very creative,” working to establish e-mail communication with residents, facilitating the delivery of messages to residents, all the while respecting social distancing requirements. “We’ve done a lot of things to keep team building and morale up,” Scott added. Scott said that Richmond Terrace is lucky to have a lot of long-term employees that are vested in the home and they work hard to take care of the residents and themselves. “We’re really pulling together to address any issues that arise,” she stated. “We’re focused on staff morale and keeping people healthy.” Additional quality care aids were hired to assist personal support workers with non-medical tasks such as making beds and tidying rooms. There is a COVID-19 pandemic plan at Richmond Terrace and it has been shared with staff and other team members. Scott continued by saying the community has reached out to show its support. “I’m extremely thankful for the dedicated staff at Richmond Terrace,” she said. “They truly do have the residents’ best interests at heart.” Scott added that any Ministry of Health guidelines that have changed are consistently communicated to the staff. There were no known cases identified at Richmond Terrace as of Tuesday morning.

A portable sign out front of Richmond Terrace Long-Term Home acknowledges the work being done by staff. Both Richmond Terrace and Seasons Amherstburg have expressed thanks to staff for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seasons Amherstburg has also been busy tending to the needs of the senior population, with COO, LeighAnne Voll issuing the following statement last Friday afternoon: “‘At Seasons, the health and safety of our staff and residents is our highest priority. At the outset of the COVID-19 situation in Canada, we acted quickly to implement heightened precautionary protocols in all of our retirement homes, such as active screening, allowing essential visitors only and enhanced cleaning routines, among other things. We continue to follow the advice of provincial and federal governments, our sector regulators and local Public Health agencies. We have no suspected or confirmed cases at Seasons Amherstburg at this time. Given the current climate, we would gladly accept donations of PPE. If community members are interested in contacting their local Seasons retirement home about making a donation, this can be coordinated by emailing inquiries@ seasonsretirement.com. Seasons very much appreciates the dedication of our team members during this unprecedented challenge to the health care system. As a demonstration of our gratitude, we implemented a Thank You Bonus of an additional 20% to our frontline team members’ regular wages, effective March 23, 2020, to be paid out for the time period of Seasons’ heightened precautionary protocols around COVID-19. This past week Seasons launched its ‘A Little Extra Love Notes’ campaign on social media. We call the cards and letters our residents and families give us ‘Love Notes.’ While these words of support and encouragement are always welcome, they are especially treasured right now. We are asking the public to send cards, notes and artwork to brighten the day of our staff and residents. We believe these initiatives will go a long way to making sure our frontline team members know how much we appreciate the work they Juliana Liz Tabby are doing to keep our residents safe and to help ensure residents remain engaged and connected.”

Amherstburg Community Foundation launches online voting for latest initiative By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) has decided on ten non-profit organizations they will be possibly fundraising for in its latest initiative. The ACF’s “Believe in Amherstburg” initiative is ongoing, having been introduced at the ACF’s last event March 5 that featured guest speaker Jason Thorne. Non-profit agencies from the Amherstburg area were invited to submit applications of up to $7,500 each. In total, 13 applications were received with the ACF’s board whittling the list down to the ten. “We’ve reached out and asked for non-profit volunteers and groups that help so many people in our community,” said ACF president Richard Peddie. “We were delighted we had such a good turnout (at the March 5 event).” Voting on the ten Amherstburg non-profits launched on Tuesday. Those groups include the Firehorse Leadership Organization, the Fighting Island Boxing Club, Wings Avian Rehabilitation, Safe Families Canada, The House Youth Centre, the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission, Amherstburg Community Services, the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society, Natural Pathways Learning Centre and the

Amherstburg Historic Sites Association, the latter being the board that operates the Park House Museum. Peddie said they are grateful for the $35,000

raised through the 28 “community builders,” but acknowledged it is short of the $73,000 requested by the groups. Who receives the funding and how much the successful recipients receive will be decided as a result of the voting as well as recommendations from

the ACF board itself. “We really want direction from the residents of Amherstburg,” said Peddie. “Which ones do you think are important? Who do you support?” Peddie said they want to “shine a light on organizations that help so many” and people are encouraged to vote daily for their favourite cause or causes. People can vote for more than one, he said, with the voting period to last at least 30 days or perhaps longer depending on the level of participation from the public. “If (the organizations) are smart, they’ll really energize their support groups to vote and vote often,” said Peddie. The original plan was to announce the recipients at a one-year anniversary event for the ACF in June at G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. but Peddie said those plans will likely have to be changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said they will likely have a virtual event to get their message out. Peddie said the ACF board was pleased by the level of interest from non-profit groups and hopes the people of Amherstburg will share that enthusiasm when voting begins. For more information, visit www. amherstburgfoundation.org or monitor the ACF’s social media platforms.

County plans to undertake major bridge work in Amherstburg

The bridge on County Road 20 over Big Creek is scheduled for construction later this year. Essex County council approved the tender for the project, which is planned to start in July and cause a full road closure for three months. By Ron Giofu The County of Essex plans to rehabilitate a major bridge within the former Malden Township this year. The bridge over Big Creek is up for rehabilitation and Essex County council has approved the tender project during their online meeting last week. Facca Incorporated was awarded the tender, which came in at $623,000. The county estimated the value of the project at $700,000. Director of infrastructure services/county engineer Jane Mustac explained in her report to county council that the scope of the project includes the replacement of the asphalt, deck repairs, waterproofing, repairs to the abutment walls and soffit and guiderail upgrades. The work will require the complete closure of that stretch of County Road 20 for three months, Mustac said. She added work is expected to begin around July 20. Mustac noted in her report to county council that “the bridge projects included in the 2020 rehabilitation program involve complex work requiring specialized operations for repair and rehabilitation of the bridge super structures over navigable waterways with some located within provincially significant wetlands. Recognizing the complex and sensitive nature of the work, a prequalification process for contractors was utilized.” Amherstburg Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche brought up potential flooding concerns and whether this would impact the ability for people in the area to be able to leave if they had to. “In talking with our public works (April 1), there is some concerns with the road closure,” said Meloche. Meloche said there is a believe the county “didn’t factor in flooding issues down the road” and that the water levels are one-foot higher than last year and another foot

Long-time volunteer, well-known citizen passes away By Ron Giofu

“It’s been a good life,” Donald Harris Sr. said, shortly after receiving the “Father of the Year” award from the Amherstburg Freedom Museum in February. Just over a month later, Harris’ family and friends are mourning his loss but celebrating his life after Harris passed away March 28 at the age of 99. He was less than one month away from his 100th birthday, though his wife Janice said he passed away peacefully. “He was well loved,” said Janice. “He was a hard working man. He was well loved not only by me but by his kids as well.” Harris was born in Amherstburg April 25, 1920. He

married Mildred Turner in 1942 and they had 12 children. Harris was the proud grandfather of 56 grandchildren and 99 great-grandchildren and seven great-greatgrandchildren. Janice said she know him most of his life and they wed about 20 years ago in the first wedding inside the Nazrey AME Church after it has been restored. Janice said that Harris was involved “to a point” with the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, and that he was the original landowner of the property in which the museum now sits. The museum was founded by Mac and Betty Simpson and its original name was the North American Black Historical Museum. “He owned that area. He sold it to Mac Simpson,” said Janice. “Betty Simpson was my mother’s sister. Don owned the land and he sold it to Mac so he could do the museum.” Harris received several awards and recognition over his lifetime. Janice said he has family as far as Oklahoma and Texas. “He was a five-generation family man,” said Janice. Janice recalled being at the hospital the Friday before he died, and was even joking and dancing with the nurses. “His sense of humour remained with him as long as he could talk,” said Janice. “I can truthfully say he went to sleep and didn’t wake up. He was at peace. He know people were with him.” Janice said she is thankful for everyone who supported and helped him including staff at Leamington Hospital, Sutton Funeral Home, Paramed, the Erie-St. Clair LHIN, and family, friends and neighbours. “I want to thank all of the people for their well wishes, cards and condolences,” she said. “He was a gentleman’s gentleman. So many people tell me that.” When interviewed in February by the RTT, Harris looked back on his life. He recalled seeing a lot in his life, including seeing a Zeppelin flying over Amherstburg, meeting people like Joe Louis and Vincent Price and having friends gunned down by members of Al Capone’s crime family. Harris worked for over 30 years at Allied

65th anniversary celebrated by parents of well-known local family Special to the RTT A local couple is celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary with a shared lifetime of helping the community. Les and Carolyn Thrasher have achieved their milestone 65th anniversary and have known each other almost 67 years. They met on Labour Day 1953 at Boblo Island where, according to daughter Villeneuve, Les was operating a ride and Carolyn was visiting the island with friends. They were married in April 1955 and over the following 10 years they had seven children: Pat (2001), Valorie, Sandi, Ken, Shari, Denean and Rene'. Carolyn is the eldest of seven children of Harold and Edna Bondy of Harrow, Ontario. Les is the eleventh child of sixteen of Devere and Irene Thrasher of Amherstburg. They have 23 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. “Dad worked on the Atomic tug for the first few years of their marriage. He then worked at Ryan Concrete as a crane operator and worked part-time

for Murray Kennedy,” said Villeneuve. “Eventually he worked full time at Kennedy Chev Olds and in 1978 my parents bought the business from Murray Kennedy. They worked side-byside in the dealership for many years. Dad continued to work into his early 80s when he stopped going into the dealership.” Both have been dedicated to Amherstburg in their volunteering with their history of helping out including volunteer work with the AMA Volunteer Ambulance squad, Marsh Historical Society, St. John the Baptist Historical Committee, the House of Shalom, the St. John the Baptist restoration committee and the MS Society of Canada. Villeneuve added Thrasher Sales has and continues to give to the community in many donations and support of community sports teams and many special fundraising efforts. “Their lives have been devoted to each other, their children, grandchildren and always at the centre of this has been their faith in God. Their faith in God sustained them through the loss of their son, Patrick in 2001,” she added. “They are loved by

Local woman pressing for Amherstburg residents to wear masks By Ron Giofu

A local woman is doing her part to try and encourage Amherstburg residents to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Krystle Bernauer created the Facebook group “MASKS4ALL Amherstburg” after watching how other countries were dealing with the pandemic. She said she noticed the countries with people wearing masks “were keeping the numbers manageable” then discovered MASKS4ALL “and it just all made sense.” “The end result I am hoping for is that our community can keep each other safe. Use banning together to do our part in protecting one another keeps the numbers down. If we have all workers covered and people that are out for "essentials" cover we will cut the number of cases down,” said Bernauer. Local retailers have been approached and Bernauer said their reaction is that they would love to protect their employees as much as possible “but without the full support everyone we can't just enforce people to do this.”

“Us wearing the masks protects the workers and then wearing it protects us from them spreading the virus,” she said. According to a recent report by CTV News, “many Canadian doctors and officials are saying cloth masks are recommended in certain situations, though Canada’s top doctor has stopped short of officially calling for facial coverings. Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said (recently) that Canada, 'like the United States, (is) looking at the latest information and looking at recommendations right now.' As officials have stressed from the beginning, Tam repeated that medical masks need to be reserved for healthcare workers, pointing out the country’s supply of personal protective equipment is low.” Bernauer said her response to people that believe that this would cause people to disregard social distancing “is that this is not protection to them, it is to protect others while out for their essential shopping needs. Otherwise you are to be at home.”

Town of Amherstburg releases its 2019 remuneration report By Ron Giofu

Much like the County of Essex recently did for its council, the Town of Amherstburg has now followed suit and released its remuneration report for 2019. The town releases its remuneration report annually, with treasurer Justin Rousseau noting that under Section 284 of the Municipal Act, an itemized statement of remuneration end expense payments shall be provided to council on or before March 31. “It shall include each member of council in respect of his or her service as a member of council or any other body, including a local board to which the member has been appointed by council or on which the member holds office by virtue of being a member of council,” stated Rousseau in his report to town council. Remuneration totals are not made up entirely of salary, but also include communication allowances, per diems, public reception allowances, training and conferences and travel and mileage. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo’s total remuneration for 2019 amounted to $71,113.94. His salary as mayor was reported at $44,999.28 with $758.29 reported for his communication allowance, $426.53 in per diems, $6,561.90 in public receptions and $1,530.30 in training and conferences. DiCarlo did not claim any travel and mileage expenses from the municipality. The mayor also sits on the Windsor Police Services Board and his remuneration there, which factored into his overall total, amounted to $5,938.37. DiCarlo also sits on the Essex Powerlines board of directors where his salary was $4,916.66, remuneration for meeting fees total $4,625, per diems of $1,000 and travel and mileage of $337.61. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche’s salary was $29,949.84 and his total remuneration was $34,590.79. The

other remuneration came from his $325.91 for his communication allowance, per diems of $1,332.09, public receptions of $415 and training and conferences of $2,567. Neither DiCarlo or Meloche’s total renumeration factored in their salaries and expenses from Essex County council. Each of the five town councillors earned a salary of $23,774.16 in 2019. The differences in their respective remunerations came from their other allowances, boards and expenses. Councillor Patricia Simone’s total remuneration was $27,894.37 with her communication allowance be $332.75, her per diems total $1,331.42, public receptions amount to $171.89 and her training and conferences amount be listed at $2,284.15. The total remuneration amount for Councillor Peter Courtney was $16,450.98. On top of his councillor salary was $1,220.40 for a communication allowance, $531.42 in per diems, and a public reception total of $325. He received an additional total in 2019 of $600 as an ERCA board member with that listed as $180 in per diems and $420 in travel and mileage. Councillor Donald McArthur’s total remuneration for 2019 was $24,945.58. His per diem of $531.42 and a public reception total of $640 was added to his councillor salary. Councillor Michael Prue’s 2019 remuneration was $24,673.80 with her per diem being $407.80 with $150 for public receptions and $266.84 for travel and mileage. Councillor Marc Renaud had his 2019 remuneration listed as $24,365.58 with his councillor salary added to $531.42 in per diems and $60 in public receptions. Bill Wark, whose remuneration was $7,615 as a member of the Essex Powerlines board of directors, was paid by Essex Powerlines. Other people earning remuneration in 2019 included
