Steam & Gas Engine Show highlights rural history By Ron Giofu
The 35th annual Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Show allowed people to experience agricultural history over the weekend. The show, presented by the Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum, was held at Co-An Park in McGregor with the three-day event being filled with demonstrations, tractor pulls, seminars, children’s activities, food and a look back at agricultural and rural history. It also allowed people to see steam engines from years gone by. Massey-Harris was this year’s featured tractor and machinery. Gary Struhar, president of the Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum, noted they need volunteers to help put the show on annually. “We have to have the volunteers,” he said. “Without them, none of this would happen.” Struhar added the need for volunteers is still there to help run the show year after year. There were new features at this year’s show, Struhar added, including a performance by the Lazee G Ranch and the addition of guest speakers. Vendors came from as far as the Sarnia area with people attending from as far

One of this area’s greatest heroes died last week and town council took time to remember him. Ralph Mayville died last Friday at the age of 97 and town council observed a moment of silence to remember him at the start of Monday night’s meeting. It was Councillor Patricia Simone who read a portion of Mayville’s extensive resume and thanked him for his service to Canada. Simone pointed out that Mayville was born in Amherstburg in 1921 and grew up in town before moving to Windsor. Mayville served in World War II, and he became a part of the elite unit known as the 1st Special Service Force, also known as the “Devil’s Brigade.” According to a presentation to town council in March, “the 1st Special Service Force, also called the Black Devils, The Black Devils’ Brigade, and Freddie’s Freighters, was an elite American – Canadian commando unit during World War II, under command of the United States 5th Army. The unit was organized in 1942 and disbanded in 1944. Today’s modern Special Forces Units are conceived on the same practices and principals of the 1st SSF. In 2013, the United States Congress passed a bill to award the 1st SSFthe Congressional Medal Gold Medal in recognition of their service. There are 28 members of the 1st SSFfrom the Windsor and Essex County region that are to be recognized.” Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 is currently fundraising for monuments that will be placed in King’s Navy Yard Park to recognize the 1st Special Service Force. One such fundraiser is a chicken wing event this Saturday. This is a not for profit project being coordinated between Adopt-A-Vet Canada and the King’s Navy Yard FSSF Project, project officials noted in March with Mayville being one of the last living members of the 1st SSF. Town council approved the Legion’s plans to have the unit recognized within Navy Yard Park at its March 25 meeting and Simone remembers that meeting well. “He was a true hero,” she said. “He fought for the rights and freedoms that we know today. I thank him for what he did.” Simone said she met Mayville once but heard many stories about him and his heroics and expressed gratitude for his service.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Resident concerned with condition of Concession 5 North
I called the town early in the Spring to point out there were two very deep and jarring cracks in the road on the Concession 5 North near County Road 8. They were very polite and actually did respond quite quickly in applying an asphalt patch. Unfortunately, within the week, the patch cracked as well leaving a bone rattling drop off in the northbound lane again. This week I believe it’s the third patch job that has broken through. I am assuming all the workmen and materials are quite expensive for all of this. Is there not some point when the public works
department realizes that this is not working? Clearly there is a serious crumbling problem with the underlying gravel base. How many taxpayers’ dollars are going by the wayside every year due to completely substandard patch jobs? Would it not make more sense instead of repeating the same shoddy error over and over again to address the underlying issue once and for all? I realize work is being done further south on Concession 5 North and that’s good, but I hope it offers a lasting solution since these patch jobs really are only offering make shift seriously short term
solutions. Is this work being done by short-term contractors rather than professional engineers? Who is overseeing this work and reporting back to the town within two weeks, four weeks out from job completion? Whatever the answers the remedy is not working. I fear the Concession 5 North has become a contractor’s “money pit,” in my opinion. Respectfully submitted, —Libby Keenan Amherstburg

Amherstburg Fire Chief Bruce Montone gestures as he speaks about one of the slides that he presented as part of a public meeting on the new fire master plan last Saturday afternoon at the Libro Centre. There was a second public meeting at Station #2 Tuesday night with a third meeting planned for Station #3 Thursday at 6:30 p.m. By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Fire Department is developing its new master plan and is looking to the public for assistance. The new fire master plan has been the subject of a pair of public meetings thus far with one more meeting scheduled. The first meeting was held last Saturday afternoon at the Libro Centre with the second being Tuesday night at Amherstburg Fire Station #2. Chief Bruce Montone noted the department is updating the 2007 master plan, in which all 42 recommendations were either implemented or the findings were no longer applicable. He thanked staff from that era for their work and noted the current update began in 2017. “The job of fighting fires today is much more dangerous than in the history of the fire service,” said Montone, noting the new fire master plan will span until 2030. “Moderate growth” is projected for the fire department, which currently has four staff, 60 volunteers and five unpaid staff members. There is an average of 500 call-outs for service annually, with Montone noting that number was down in 2018. The fire service area in Amherstburg is 185.61 square kilometres. The fire department’s cost per $1,000 of assessment is $0.79. Fire prevention is expected to be a key component of the new master plan as there are just under two residential fire with monetary losses for every 1,000 homes in Amherstburg. “It tells us we’ve a little more work to do relative to fire prevention,” said Montone. “We need to focus a little more effort based on that.” About 40 of the 60 firefighters have been working on the new fire master plan, the chief added, and it is the safety of those firefighters that is a primary concern as well. As for how firefighters operate in the public and on calls, Montone said
customer service and professionalism are highly important and that he wants people to have “wow moments” after dealing with the Amherstburg Fire Department. The look of the department could change in the future, he noted. As there are currently two fire halls – Stations 2 and 3 – that are approximately 50-years-old and the other that is about 30-years-old, there is a chance the number of fire halls in Amherstburg could be reduced. While not stating the town is definitely reducing the number of fire stations from three to two, Montone indicated it could be an option as long as response times are met. The chief added there are roughly $1 million in renovations needed to fire station #1 as well, including new doors, a new roof and other upgrades. He noted there are millions in potential costs down the road with the replacement of trucks, equipment and other needs. “We need to budget for sustainability,” said Montone. “We need to look at asset management and station locations. Are we getting the biggest bang for our buck?” The fire master plan might be before council by November’s budget deliberations, but Montone added that it could take a bit longer than that to complete. The third and final public meeting is Thursday night at Amherstburg Fire Station #3 in Malden Centre starting at 6:30 p.m. “We want to make sure the plan is reflective of our community’s needs,” said Montone. “In the future, we want to show how well we are doing or not by measuring our performance.” The public can also give feedback through the town’s “Talk the Burg” website at www.talktheburg.ca. New priest welcomed at St. John the Baptist Church By Ron Giofu
RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU
Father Matthew Kucharski is the new priest at St. John the Baptist Church. Fr. Kucharski started in Amherstburg July 2, after having spent the last two years at Sacred Heart Church in LaSalle.
A new priest has been welcomed at St. John the Baptist Church. Father Matthew Kucharski has been on the job at the historic Amherstburg Roman Catholic church since July 2. He takes over from Father Brian Jane, who was transferred to Sarnia. “I’ve been ordained for 23 years,” Fr. Kucharski explained. Stops along the way have included London, Windsor and Chatham with his most recent parish before coming to St. John the Baptist Church being Sacred Heart Church in LaSalle, where he spent the last two years. “The bishop decided this is where he wanted me at this time,” said Kucharski. Born and raised in Windsor, Fr. Kucharski attended the University of Windsor before attending the seminary. In addition to being pastor at St. John the Baptist Church, he is an executive with Priest for Life Canada and on a subcommittee for the Ongoing Formation of Ontario Bishops. So far, Fr. Kucharski likes what he sees out of his new church. “It’s a parish that is very active,” he said. “There is a lot of activity here. Already, I can sense solid faith from the people.” People are friendly within the church, he added, and communicate with each other before and after services. He said there is some changes that have been happening at the church, himself included, but is confident everyone will get through it fine and that people will work together in the process. “It’s exciting,” he said of the changes. St. John the Baptist Church was originally founded in 1802, he noted, and that he looks
Essex Powerlines launches “Power Up for Paperless” Campaign By Ron Giofu Essex Powerlines Corporation (EPL) has announced the launch of its summertime paperless billing campaign “Power Up for Paperless” where proceeds from the campaign will benefit the Fight Like Mason Foundation. The Fight Like Mason Foundation is a local registered charity organization that was created by Iain Macri and Chantelle Bacon, parents of Mason Bacon-Macri, who died of Rhabdomyosarcoma at the age of four. The charity organization helps to improve treatment, care, quality of life and awareness of patients diagnosed with childhood rhabdomyosarcoma and other childhood cancers. With the help from its customers, EPL hopes to raise funds by donating $10 to the Fight Like Mason Foundation for each customer that signs up for paperless billing. Customers can
choose paperless billing through the online portal, MyAccount, or contact EPL’s Customer Service Representatives to help get enrolled today. “The Fight Like Mason Foundation is a great cause that helps provide comfort to these young superheroes who are battling illness and fighting for their lives. Essex Powerlines hopes that, with the support from our communities, we can help make a difference for these children. By signing up for paperless billing, together we will be helping continue Mason’s fight by providing funding and bringing awareness to this powerful cause,” stated Joe Barile, general manager of the Essex Powerlines Corporation. Amanda Panetta, corporate communications specialist with Essex Powerlines, noted the company runs a paperless billing campaign annually including two last year. Over 1,000 trees were planted as a result of
one campaign while they partnered with EnWin to stock local food banks in the other. Panetta said Essex Powerlines enjoys giving back to the communities they are in and are happy to work with the Fight Like Mason foundation this year. “We really believe in this cause. We think they are true superheroes and we want to support their cause,” she said. To make the switch to paperless, Essex Powerlines customers can visit MyAccount through Essex Powerlines’ website. The direct link can be found at https:// myaccount.essexpowerlines.ca/app/login. Members of the general public can also contact EPL Customer Service Representatives at 519-737-6640. Panetta added that about 20 per cent of Essex Powerlines customers have switched to paperless billing but they “chip away” and try to increase that number.
For more information on the campaign and the Fight Like Mason Foundation, customers can visit www.essexpowerlines.ca. The campaign will run until Sept. 6.
forward to being a part of such a historic parish. “There is a rich history of faith in Amherstburg,” said Fr. Kucharski. “The church has grown and evolved with the changes in society.” Fr. Kucharski noted he enjoys sharing people’s journeys with them and that there is a connection between a priest and the congregation where people will come and share their good and bad moments. “To be part of people’s lives that way is very humbling,” he noted. Stating he tries to collaborate as much as possible, Fr. Kucharski said the church is for everyone and “we all have gifts” that can be used to help those within the parish reach their goals. Fr. Kucharski found it hard to leave Sacred Heart Church as he developed close attachments in his two years there but has already been warmly welcomed at St. John the Baptist Church. He added his former church is just 15 minutes away. “I left a great community but I’ve definitely been welcomed into a great new community,” he said. Amherstburg and Harrow will eventually be part of one church “family” and while Fr. Kucharski has yet to be officially appointed the priest looking after both churches, he will still be part of the planning process. His former church in LaSalle is now part of a “family” with St. Joseph Church in River Canard and St. Paul Church in LaSalle with Father Dwayne Adam being the pastor for all of them. “I’m very happy to be here and very excited about the community and where we can go from here,” said Fr. Kucharski. St. John the Baptist Church, located at 225 Brock St., has about 2,000 families registered.

People’s Party of Canada hosts information night with local candidates
Bill Capes, the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) candidate for the riding of Essex, speaks at a recent event in Essex. The PPC candidates from around the region gathered with about 50 members of the public. By Ron Giofu The new People’s Party of Canada (PPC) welcomed about 50 members of the public to meet its candidates in the area recently. The event was held inside of a boardroom at the Essex Civic Centre and included Bill Capes, the candidate for the riding of Essex. Capes believes they are getting good receptions when out at the door. “We were very early out of the gate,” he said. “We’ve been out in the public. We’ve been doing events. People are open to change.” Capes thought the recent meet-andgreet “went well.” “Our people are coming out,” he said. “It’s very important that our message is getting out to the people.” According to Capes, three things that are on the minds of people are “immigration, immigration and the
affordability of life.” He said the PPC’s immigration policy “is the strongest immigration policy of any party running,” adding there are concerns over the volume of people coming to Canada. According to a speech that party leader Maxime Bernier delivered last week and that is posted to the party’s website, he said he would “substantially lower” the total number of immigrants accepted into Canada from 350,000 to between 100,000 and 150,000 “depending on economic and other circumstances.” Bernier also pledged to repeal the Multiculturalism Act and focus on “the integration of immigrants into the Canadian society.” “In a free society, immigrants have the right to cherish and maintain their cultural heritage. It should be clear that the People’s Party will never support any government measure to force them to abandon it. But that doesn’t mean we have any obligation to help them preserve it either, with government programs and taxpayers’ money,” Bernier stated. “When they decide to move from their country of origin to this one, immigrants must be willing to leave some of their life behind, and be prepared to become full members of their new country.” Bernier also stated that a focus would be on welcoming immigrants that “answer the needs of sectors where there is a scarcity of manpower with specialized skills” and that every person hoping to immigrate to Canada have a face-to-face interview to assess how they align with “Canadian values and societal norms.” Capes said that the new NAFTA negotiations “have shown us that the U.S.A. is focused inward regarding trade and as a result, we have found ourselves dealing with challenges that are not being solved at the negotiating table.” He said, “our manufacturing existence is at risk” and claimed “our
government has shown little interest in support of Canadian manufacturing. In the last couple of years, the traditional NDP ‘workers first’ concept has been overrun by a hard left turn into environmental extremes. Jagmeet Singh has stated that they would impose a ban on all fossil fuels in a short amount of time, if elected. Tracey Ramsey, our incumbent, has taken photo ops with U.S. Democrat socialist AOC (Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) in support of a Canadian ‘Green New Deal.’” Capes contended that the U.S. embraces its manufacturing sector and “the ideology of our left-wing parties is in direct opposition to the traditional ‘dirty’ industries.” Capes believed a vote for the NDP would “risk our own economic suicide.” He called for “real change” and a government that will “work for the betterment of our entire country, energy independence
and stability with pipelines west as well as east.” He believed the PPC platform will lower business and farm taxes, personal taxes and eliminate capital gains penalties. “Ending supply management will lower food prices and opening up barriers to interprovincial trade will give new markets to those that wish to expand production,” he asserted. Capes added that “an economically sound immigration plan must be in place and stop our debt balloon by balancing our budget.”

New doctors welcomed to Amherstburg Health Care Centre By Ron Giofu Two doctors have now set up shop at the Amherstburg Health Care Centre and are accepting new patients. Dr. Neville Crain and Dr. Kimberly Silvaggio are based out of the clinic with Silvaggio being full-time and Crane increasing from part-time hours to fulltime hours in January. Silvaggio started her new practice earlier this month. Silvaggio is an Amherstburg native and a graduate of General Amherst High School. She said her plan was to work with Dr. Fernando DiPierdomenico but since the man commonly referred to as “Dr. D.” has passed away, she is working to help continue his practice and build up one of her own. The Amherstburg Health Care Centre is owned by Dr. D’s son, Luigi DiPierdomenico. “I’m very happy to be home,” said Silvaggio. Silvaggio graduated university with a major in biochemistry and a double-minor in biology and mathematics. She was accepted at the Medical University of the Americas and after graduating there, she studied in the United States before completing her education at McMaster University in Hamilton. She is a general practitioner and able to see patients of all ages. Entering medicine was a decision her grandmother helped her with. Silvaggio was considering a career in medicine or teaching, with her parents Dom and Susan both being retired teachers. Some of her grandmother’s last words were to encourage her to follow her dream of becoming a doctor. Silvaggio’s patient list is growing and she is seeing some familiar faces. She finished her schooling in June and began at the Amherstburg Health Care Centre in early August. Crane’s route to Amherstburg was a different one. Similar to Dr. D, Crane originally pursued
engineering before turning to a career in medicine. After obtaining his medical degree in South Africa, Crane did some work at sea before coming to Canada. In total, the family physician has been a doctor for 21 years. “I came to Canada in 2007 after being on a cruise ship for four years,” he said. Crane would find his way to Saskatchewan and has practiced there for the last 12 years. While he plans on becoming a full-time doctor at the Amherstburg Health Care Centre in the new year, he is seeing
New Family Doctors
patients in town for two weeks in person while rotating the next six weeks in Saskatchewan. While out west, he still sees patients in Amherstburg every Thursday via the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) video conferencing service. Crane was introduced to the area through physician recruiter Joan Mavrinac. He would meet Dr. DiPierdomenico as he was looking for assistance at the time. After Dr. D passed away late last year, the process of getting Crane licensed in Ontario was held so that he could take some of Dr. D’s patient roster. “I was here in February working for the first time,” he said. Noting that his wife is house hunting, Crane said the plan is to be in Amherstburg for the long term. “If we do it right, we will retire here,” he said. The two doctors will help cover each other off when the other is unavailable with the eventual goal being to develop a family health group at the clinic. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche welcomed the new doctors and congratulated them on their practices in Amherstburg. “You are facilitating health care in the area,” said Meloche. Additional doctors in Amherstburg means more residents will be looked after, the deputy mayor added, “and that’s the key here.” He added the services being brought in will be beneficial to the residents. The Amherstburg Health Care Centre is located at 433 Sandwich St. S. For more information or to register as a patient, call 519-736-2131.

Broden Meloche named new team captain By Ron Giofu The Integrity Amherstburg Admirals have selected their new leadership group for the 2019-20 season. Broden Meloche will be the new captain with Michael Hatch, Reid Stieler and Josh Talerico being the alternate captains. The new captains were unveiled last Thursday night at the Libro Centre. Meloche said he is excited to get the season going, as are his new alternate captains. The Admirals are expected to have a younger group and he is looking forward to helping lead them. “I’ve got big shoes to fill this year but I’m anxious to get started,” said Meloche. Stieler said it feels good to be able to represent the Admirals and the town. “We’re looking forward to leading a younger group of guys and getting success this season,” said Stieler. “Our team is going to be different than in years past,” Hatch added, also noting there will be younger players on the team. “It feels like I just got here and now I’m one of the old guys. There are big shoes to fill from a lot of past captains and assistant captains but I’m looking forward to it.” Talerico added he is excited for the season as well, and is hopeful this is the year the Admirals break through and earn a PJHL Stobbs Division championship. He added the local Jr. C hockey team has added size to go with their speed. Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon said the captains were chosen via a combination of a vote among the players and another vote among the coaches. “This is probably the first time in five or six years that what we picked was exactly what the players picked,” said

Bortignon. “That’s always a good start when picking a leadership group.” While not knocking any of the other returning players on the team or any of the new players, Bortignon said Meloche, Hatch, Talerico and Stieler set themselves out from the rest. Of the new captain, Bortignon said Meloche has the respect of his peers in the locker room, the respect of the officials as he doesn’t take a lot of penalties and is a good communicator with the coaching staff. Hatch is going into his fifth year on the team, Bortignon added, and that the coaches know a lot about him and have watched him and his game develop. Bortignon added Talerico is a player that is energetic and respected by his teammates, while Stieler is a young player with a “worker mentality” that “goes about his business the right way.” “We’re really excited about the leadership group we have,” said Bortignon. The PJHL Stobbs Division season is fast approaching, with conditioning skates this week at the Libro Centre staring tonight (Wednesday) from

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Don’t let your emotions get the best of you in a heated situation, Aries. You can come out on top if you remain calm and think through your responses with utmost caution. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, there are a few different ways you can play an upcoming situation. Taking a back seat and letting another person lead the way may be the smartest strategy.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, keeping things bottled up until the last minute seems to be the way you have been operating lately. You may want to try sharing your feelings and seeking feedback. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Wearing your emotions on your sleeve may get you attention, Leo, but it won’t necessarily be the kind of attention you were hoping for. Reconsider what you share. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, it can be challenging to relinquish control, but that is just what you will have to do at some point this week. This will be a good lesson to learn. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 It’s hard to see someone’s perspective when you have never gone through this particular situation, Libra. Keep that in mind when supporting a loved one in need. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 All it takes is a subtle change of perception to turn a situation around, Scorpio. Start by taking a few risks outside of your comfort zone for some new inspiration. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, it is good to be proud of your accomplishments. Just be sure not to come across as boastful, especially in certain company. You don’t want to come across as bragging. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, asking for help is not admitting weakness. If you feel you are in over your head, call in the reinforcements. The next projects they are working towards are sewer work and a new parking lot. Events like Sunday morning breakfasts, Tuesday night bingo and Thursday night cornhole tournaments are important to
By Ron Giofu The McGregor Columbian Club hit the links for its annual golf tournament before heading back to the hall for dinner. A total of 110 golfers went to Fox Glen Golf Club for the eighth annual tournament with all the proceeds going back into the McGregor hall. The hall is home to the McGregor Knights of Columbus Council #2844 and also houses a number of special events, noted committee member Len Paquette. “We have over 40 sponsors this year,” said Paquette. “These are between Essex, Windsor and Amherstburg. This just makes our day.” Paquette said the golf committee and every other committee and board within the McGregor Columbian Club works hard to keep the Walker Road hall open. It is mainly volunteer-run, with the exception of bartending and janitorial staff. “There’s a lot of good people here and this is what McGregor is all about,” said Paquette. “McGregor is about everyone working together. Sr. Cards lose twice at home last week
It was a tough weekend for the Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team as they dropped a pair of home games. The Cardinals opened the week last Friday night with a home game against the Essex Yellowjackets. It was a game that the Cardinals were in position to win, but ended up falling short 11-9. The Yellowjackets took a 3-0 lead in the first inning but that was short-lived thanks to a six-run first inning by the Cardinals. Tristan Bouchat’s RBI single got things going for Amherstburg with Mac Ouellette
following shortly thereafter with a two-run double. Brady Levack’s RBI single gave the Cardinals the lead and that would expand to 6-3 after one inning thanks to a run scoring when Matt Lepine was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Levack scoring on a force out. Brad Lepine’s RBI single made it a 7-3 game after four innings but Essex scored twice in the top of the fifth to make it 7-5. The Cardinals would go up 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Kyle Lepine scoring on an error and a Cody Brown RBI single. However, things unravelled for the Cardinals in the seventh inning. Essex would score six runs in the top of the final inning, including the winning runs with two outs, to seal the deal. Amherstburg would put two base runners on in the bottom of the seventh but failed to score. “Our bats went silent late in the game,” said Ouellette, who said they fell victim to walks and three bloop hits in the top of the inning. “That led to six runs.” Ouellette called the loss “a huge disappointment” and that they had higher hopes after not playing in over a week. “We came out hot to start but we need to play seven innings of baseball,” he said. “Six innings is not a complete game of baseball.” The Cardinals returned to the Libro Centre Sunday afternoon for a game against the Woodslee Orioles but came out on the short end in that game as well. “We didn’t play very well,” said Cole Lepine. “We didn’t have good hitting at good times. We didn’t play good defense and we didn’t win.” Cole Lepine said if they resume playing strong defense, they will be fine. “We’ll figure it out,” he said. “We’ve got to get it going.”

Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 branch president Laurie Cavanaugh took issue with having only one weekend of testing, as she believed there were supposed to be multiple tests. She also voiced concern that the weekend chosen was Canada Day weekend. “When the fireworks were cancelled, everyone came to the Legion,” she said. The Legion does its own sound monitoring, she added, and they are taking efforts to ask bands to reduce their sound volumes including one-man bands on Sundays. Their own measurements show they are keeping the sound in the range of 70 decibels. “If you do it on a weekly basis, there’s no way we’re 100 dB,” said Cavanaugh, adding “I don’t think it’s fair not to do it every weekend.” Councillor Donald McArthur said “we need a number” to base something off of with Councillor Patricia Simone stating a decibel number could be used on a trial basis to see how it works. Simone added there is an amphitheatre proposed for the former Duffy’s site and believed noise issues could reappear once that is built, but Miceli pointed out sound levels from the amphitheatre have been factored into the town’s planning for the site. Miceli believed the 103 dB level was “excessive” and that Novak put a lot of work into his report. While he will do at least one or two more weekends of studies, Miceli said it will be Novak who will determine what an appropriate decibel level will look like. Prue said he met with residents and Legion officials and hoped to keep the peace by asking the Legion keep their music in the area of 70 dB. Kurt Reffle, a downtown resident who visits the Legion, believed it wasn’t so much a complaint about noise but the type of music. He said if it was a symphony concert at a high volume, many people would not complain. “It shouldn’t be up to the Legion to change what they are doing,” said Reffle, adding that if people want to live on the river they should ensure it isn’t across from a source of music.

Local insulation company steps up to help with River Lights decorations
CAMP-ARI at Gesstwood Camp As part of its ongoing commitment to inspiring healthy living, Sunset Produce sent 48 local youth who might not otherwise attend summer camp to “CAMP-ARI,” a weeklong program at Gesstwood Camp and Education Centre in Essex. The name “CAMP-ARI” is a tribute to Sunset’s award-winning Campari cocktail tomato, the first-ever branded tomato. “We’re thrilled to send 48 local kids to camp this summer,” says Melanie Mastronardi, Project Coordinator, Community. “Our mission is to inspire healthy living through WOW flavor experiences, and this is a great way to encourage kids to get active and make smart eating choices.” In addition to fresh air and memorable experiences, all 2019 Gesstwood campers throughout the summer will enjoy fresh, greenhouse-grown Sunset fruits and vegetables at their camp meals and snacks. “We’re grateful to Sunset for their continued support, including the weekly donations of delicious greenhouse-grown produce they provide to help fuel the approximately 60 – 100 campers we host each week throughout the summer,” says Breanna Roles, Gesstwood Camp Director. This is the second year Sunset has sponsored Gesstwood, which provides year-round recreational programs. To date, Sunset has completely renovated and winterized six cabins at the camp, including the latest Aloha Cabin, named for the company’s unique orange-and-yellowstriped bell pepper. Materials for the Aloha Cabin were provided by the United Church. Gesstwood also got a new look, thanks to Sunset’s award-winning creative team. They led the redesign of the camp’s logo, which was used on camper and staff T-shirts and bandanas that Sunset supplied this summer. Camper Ben Wood said he enjoyed coming to the camp and enjoyed all of the songs and games they played. Roles added they work with area schools to choose children who might not otherwise be able to come, noting they did so through their field trip program.
