Art by the River draws huge crowds By Ron Giofu
Katherine Laing and her one-year-old son Donovan enjoy the “Little Artists’ Workshop” at Art by the River. Thousands attended the 53rd annual arts and crafts show at Fort Malden, which is presented by the Gibson Gallery.
The 53rd annual Art by the River was presented last weekend with huge crowds enjoying the large number of vendors. The weather was perfect for the annual two-day arts and crafts show, presented by the Gibson Gallery on the grounds of Fort Malden National Historic Site. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Gibson Gallery and early estimates have over 10,000 people attended the show. “Mother Nature co-operated this year,” said Bonnie Deslippe, office administrator for the Gibson Gallery. Deslippe said they had the highest number of vendors yet, with 175 stationed around Fort Malden’s grounds. “We were basically filled up in May,” Deslippe explained. “We had such a long waiting list, so we added additional spots, but we still have a waiting list.” There was a lot of fine art this year, something Deslippe said is one of her passions, but there was also no shortage of any other kind of art. “There’s such a variety,” she said. “Just about anything that can be handmade
was here this year.” Crowds poured in early and often, with a piper and soldiers from Fort Malden getting the event going Saturday. Deslippe said she noticed a lot of people carrying bags while walking at the show. “That’s a good sign,” she said. “People are shopping. They like what we’ve brought in.” Deslippe added she received positive feedback from vendors as well. The success of the show is due to the fact people like what is being brought in and the public knows there will be quality, Deslippe added. “We just try hard for the people and exhibitors to make it a good show,” she said. “We’ve developed a good reputation over the years.” Katherine Laing was there Saturday with her son Donovan. While Laing and her mom attend annually, it was the first time for her one-year-old son. “Me and my mom come every year,” said Laing. “It’s really a fun day in the sun and we enjoy the food. Now we’re passing it on.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Local family grateful for the return of their dog The Soucie family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone involved in the search for Otis last week. We were humbled by the hundreds of volunteers, neighbours, friends, and family who shared our posts, sent messages of encouragement, called with sightings, combed through ditches, and drove up and down concessions for hours on end. Your dedication to helping find Otis is yet another reminder of the great community in which we live! To Elite K9, Aladdin and his devoted staff, thank you for your professionalism and commitment to finding Otis. Your countless hours and dedication of resources did not go unnoticed. To Merrimutt Pet Resort, thank you for volunteering your time, expertise, and canine friends in helping us search for Otis. Regardless of what time of day or night, you acted upon any and all sightings and were invaluable in teaching us about trapping, canine behaviours, and releasing raccoons! To Mary Morneau, Claire Maxwell, Rick Sinasac who provided advice and the live traps which eventually caught our mischievous pug, we are indebted to you. To Sandy and Todd Wismer, whose beloved puppy Lincoln became Otis’ friend while on the run, and as a result their property became a central point for trapping and searching, we appreciate your patience, understanding, and willingness to help in anyway possible.
To Jeff Fields, thank you for allowing us to set traps on your property. To our Rivertown Dance Academy family, for all the hours you committed to us in so many ways. We are extremely grateful. To all the local businesses who assisted in spreading the word about our lost dog, whether through social media, hanging flyers, or simply through word of mouth, we thank you. We would like to especially mention Shirley Meloche at Joe Meloche Ford who contacted CKLW on our behalf and the River Town Times for their dedication to finding lost pets. And last, but certainly not least, thank you to all the families, friends, and neighbours on the 5th and 6th concessions for their generosity, spirit, and patience during this time. In closing, we again sincerely thank the entire community for your support and involvement. Words can simply not express our feelings and emotions at having Otis reunited with us. Sincerely, —Amy Soucie, On behalf of the Soucie Family Amherstburg

New features added at Southern Ontario Vintage Bicycle show
RTT PHOTOS BY RON GIOFU
Mark and Cori McGuire stand behind the counter of their new vintage bicycle showroom, debuted as part of the Southern Ontario Vintage Bicycle open house held Aug. 25 at their Concession 6 North home. The showroom will house the McGuires’ collection of vintage bikes. By Ron Giofu The seventh annual Southern Ontario Vintage Bicycle open house was held at the home of Mark and Cori McGuire over the weekend with more features to enjoy. The show, held Sunday at 6871 Concession 6 North, featured hundreds of vintage bicycles not just from the McGuires' collection but from collectors from as far as London, Brantford, Woodstock and Elmira. There were about 15 vendors on site as well. Cori pointed out her husband retired late last
year and began work on renovating the interior of their barn and converting into a showroom for their collection. Not only does it feature vintage bicycles from CCM, Schwinn, Sunshine and Werlich brands, but it has a newly-built counter, a vintage cash register and classic posters that promote bicycles. “The whole idea is that it's supposed to look like an old bike shop,” she said. The couple gave the history of the bicycle to those at the show Sunday, but Mark has travelled to visit various
groups and organizations on the same topic. He will do so in his newly renovated showroom on an appointment basis free-of-charge. “It's a private collection,” he said of his showroom. “If people want to visit me, they can contact me.” Mark's father used to do something similar with farm equipment at his home at County Road 18 and Concession 7 South so it runs in the family. “It's going to be seasonal,” he said. “If people want to make an appointment, they can

Rick and Marian Wolfe of Komoka, Ontario brought some of their collection to the Southern Ontario Vintage Bicycle open house last Sunday, including several recent finds that date back over 100 years. “Stuff can still be found,” said Rick. “I teach to a lot of people that you've got to be on top of things.” Vintage bicycles and wagons at the show had been found as recently as Saturday, said Wolfe. “I try to bring something different for Mark every year,” he said. Rick said he has been collecting for 45 years, starting when he was 14-years-old. “I try to teach people you can have fun,” he said. “You can still find some coolness for not a lot of money.” For more information on the Southern Ontario Vintage Bicycle show or McGuire's collection, visit them on Facebook or contact mark.mcguire64@ gmail.com.

County chips in about $80,000 to help fund homeless programs
Poverty activist Tamara Kowalska (left) and Brian Hogan from the Windsor and District Labour Council address Essex County council on homelessness matters last Wednesday night at the Essex Civic Centre. The county has agreed to fund roughly $80,000 towards homeless programs in the area as those programs had been cut by the provincial government. By Ron Giofu Essex County council has joined its Windsor counterparts in helping to fund homeless programs that were the subject of cuts by the Ontario government.
The county is chipping in about $80,000 towards restoring funding for local homeless programs while the city is putting forth in the area of $500,000. County council heard from a pair of advocates – Brian Hogan from the Windsor and District Labour Council and

poverty activist Tamara Kowalska – last Wednesday night where Kowalska noted her “faith in government has been renewed” in light of the recent local contributions. Hogan criticized the provincial cuts and said downloading to municipalities does not fit the provincial government’s campaign message. He said the “raison d’etre” of the labour movement has always been to work on behalf of the neediest citizens. “Housing is a crisis and it needs to be dealt with,” said Kowalska. “Homeless people suffer from anxiety, pain, fear, loneliness, shame and voicelessness. We do need to hear from people experiencing homelessness.” Providing safe and adequate housing can lead to spinoff benefits for people, Kowalska believed, including reducing mental health and addiction issues. By not providing people with safe and adequate housing, it would compound their trauma, she told Essex County council last Wednesday night. “If we can find a way to heal trauma, then we will definitely find a way to treat addiction,” she stated. All levels of government need to work together to solve the issues, Kowalska added, something echoed by Warden Gary McNamara. “It’s not one single government’s responsibility, it’s all of our responsibility,” said McNamara. McNamara added that is all the more reason to build the acute care mega-hospital on County Road 42 and Concession 9 which would help create more beds for mental health patients at the Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette campus.

The annual Realtors Giving Back gala to benefit the Kiwanis Club Sunshine Point camp had a lot to celebrate recently. The Kiwanis Club of Windsor, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, announced another $300,000 in support of its Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp. Last month, over $100,000 was presented to the club and the new funding announcement includes the sponsorship of the three remaining cabins and the naming of the new pavilion at the camp. The three new donations include $50,000 cabin sponsorships from Barry Zekelman as well as his business Atlas Tube, a $50,000 sponsorship from the Lisa & Brian Schwab Foundation for the pavilion naming, and $150,000 from the Soclz Family Foundation for the exclusive naming of the camp.
“We are so fortunate to be able to dedicate the cabins and pavilion at our Realtors Giving Back Gala and at the same time, celebrate our club’s centennial. We have a tremendously giving community, always ready to stand up for kids!” said Tina Gatt, president of the Kiwanis Club of Windsor. Gatt noted she works for the Children’s Aid Society and the camp, located just east of Colchester, accepts 140 children annually from CAS. “It means so much to the children and youth we work with at CAS,” said Gatt. Dan Inverarity, past president of the Kiwanis Club, was given credit for helping save the camp. He also serves as fundraising chair but passed the credit to the donors and sponsors. “This place wouldn’t exist without people like you,” he told the sold out crowd.

Amherstburg dancers part of ACT’s production of “Footloose”
COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, August 28, 2019 - 7
Tori Rogers and Kaitlin Murray two of the dancers in the show By Ron Giofu A pair of young women from Amherstburg are trying their hand at musical theatre in the Arts Collective Theatre’s (ACT) production of “Footloose.” ACT will be presenting six shows in early September at the Capitol Theatre in Windsor with Amherstburg’s Tori Rogers and Kaitlin Murray among the cast. Both will be dancing as part of the show. “The show is going really well,” said Murray, 14, during a recent break in rehearsals. “It’s really upbeat and fun.” Murray, who attends Assumption High School in Windsor, said she got involved after seeing a poster for it posted to social media. For Rogers, it is a return to the theatre after taking a break from it during her high school days to focus on her dancing. The 18-year-old University of Windsor student decided to get back into the theatre with ACT. “I just really wanted to get back into it,” she said. “’Footloose’ was a great way to get involved.” Auditions were held in late-spring with Rogers pointing out that ACT tries to put together a production in eight weeks. Interviewed during week six, Rogers said it has been a lot of work
but neither of the Amherstburg residents were complaining. “It’s been fun, though,” said Murray. Rehearsals have been at All Saints Church in downtown Windsor and were occurring four nights per week at first but have since intensified to five nights per week. Murray said she is more excited than nervous with Rogers adding that the regular rehearsal schedule takes away much of the anxiety for her. “It’s fun,” said Murray. “It’s really intense.” Rogers is glad to be back involved with theatre, though noted she was nervous at first. She has re-discovered the sense of community she enjoys with theatre and says she really wants to put her best foot forward. Both are open to doing more in the future, though both have their school schedules to balance going forward. There are 8 p.m. performances of “Footloose” Sept. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at the Capitol Theatre with 2 p.m. performances Sept. 8 and Sept. 15. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for students and seniors and $15 for youth 12 and under plus box office fees. Tickets can be purchased at the Capitol Theatre box office during business hours or online at www. capitoltheatrewindsor.ca. More information on the Arts Collective Theatre can be found at www.actwindsor.com.

WECHU updates Essex County council on opioid strategy Opioid problem “in our backyards”: warden By Ron Giofu
Essex County council was given an update on the region's strategy to deal with opioids and at least one local politician wants more done to prevent addiction in the first place. The Medical Officer of Health from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) and Windsor Essex County Opioid and Substance Strategy (WECOSS) Leadership Committee co-chair Dr. Wajid Ahmed and Eric Nadalin, manager of chronic disease spoke to county council regarding the WECOSS Leadership Committee at county council’s most recent regular meeting. Numbers are climbing in relation to emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths, Ahmed noted, with similar trends being seen provincially. He chairs the WECOSS committee with Essex-Windsor EMS chief Bruce Krauter and the committee involves 28 member organizations and stakeholders in the fields of health care, education and emergency services. Ahmed noted they look at best practices around Ontario to see what other communities are doing and have done public consultation around WindsorEssex County. Nadalin outlined several initiatives the committee is involved with, including youth engagement projects,
anti-stigma initiatives and health care provider education programs. WECOSS is also involved in education programs, treatment and recovery initiatives and enforcement and justice programs including an “Order in the Court” program to see an increase in diversion programming. Amherstburg Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche noted the issue has impacted his family, as he told county council he has a family member who has battled mental illness and drug addiction. He did not mince words when it came to his views on drug dealers. “I call it manslaughter,” said Meloche. “That's what they should be charged with.” Meloche added more programming should be directed to children and youth. “We've got to get to the children,” he said. “We've got to get to the younger generation if we are going to fix this problem.” “You are spot on,” Ahmed responded, adding more strategies have to be found to discourage children and youth from using drugs in the first place. Ahmed said they are still learning from their experiences and are working with stakeholders to find solutions in a variety of different areas pertaining to the opioid issue. “We have a crisis,” he said. “People are dying.”

Meloche emphasized more needs to be done “on the front end” so that the problem may be tackled better. “I understand people are dying. I don't want to see that happen,” he said. Warden Gary McNamara also noted
that dealing with the issue early is important, as is the stigma portion. “It is in our backyard,” he said of the opioid epidemic, stating that they have to take care of their own neighbourhoods.

Mealtime Express celebrates 30 years under current owners Janet Mickle bought the restaurant in 1989 By Ron Giofu Janet Mickle decided she wanted to own her own business in 1989 and bought a restaurant in the thenFort Malden Mall. Known as Mealtime Express, Mickle purchased it from previous owner Alex Rivers with the help of her sister and brother-in-law Charlene and Ken Pierce and now three decades later, it is still going strong. Mickle said it was more of a sandwich bar and ice cream shop at the time but they added a grill, expanded the kitchen and the rest is history. “I thought I’d give it a try,” she said. “We took over his name and the train theme. It looked like fun. I love the business.” Business grew and tables and chairs were placed in the mall’s hallway. When another restaurant in the mall closed, she moved there and continued on. It was at that point, she added Broaster chicken to the menu, something that has become a signature at Mealtime Express. “After five years, we moved across the hall into a space four times the size of what I had,” she said. Mealtime Express moved to its current location at 421 Sandwich St., in the plaza across from the Fort Malden Mall, in 1999. The mall, later renamed the White Woods Mall, was later redeveloped into what is now the Walmart plaza. “I just signed another ten-year lease,” said Mickle. “Here’s to 40 years.” Mickle said there have been ups and downs over the first 30 years but they have gotten through it and the last two years have been among Mealtime Express’ best. “We had some rough years when we just kept plugging through it,” said Mickle. Location and word-of-mouth discussion of the business helped things rebound and grow. She said they have a lot of loyal customers over the years and they are now bringing in their children and grandchildren.
Janet Mickle was joined by present and past staff at a party in her honour Sunday evening. Mealtime Express has been under Mickle’s ownership for the last 30 years. A lot of new customers are also discovering Mealtime Express, something she said is key. Mickle said they offer a friendly atmosphere that “is sort of like home,” adding their original slogan was “fast and friendly” and they still try to stick to that. Their homemade burgers and breakfasts are some of the more popular menu items, she noted. Mickle added it doesn’t seem like 30 years have gone by but emphasized that her staff has been an enormous help to her. “I would have to say my staff is the best ever,” she said. “They make my life easy. A lot of them have been here for 20 years. We’re pretty much a family here.” Her husband Norm agreed, also pointing out her staff has been with her for a long time and she considers them family. Norm said he is “very proud” of his wife’s accomplishments. “Her regulars come in with their favorite beverage waiting for them and the girls all know them by name. Every day they experience new customers and soon they also become regulars. Let’s face it - 30 years in business (means) they are definitely doing it right.” Norm added: “Janet knows the customer loyalty and the dedication of her wait and cooking staff is the key to success. She has never taken that for granted. She is always giving back to the community she loves by donating to local teams and events and charities where the money always stays local.” One example of the restaurant giving back is the annual Secret Santa Benefit Dinner, which will be in its eleventh year in 2019. That program is run inconjuction with ACS and police. That program has helped hundreds of local kids and their families at Christmas as it has raised almost $100,000. All proceeds have gone
to benefit local children at Christmas time. “So, if you’re looking for a great home cooked meal, breakfast all day, and a place where friends meet and the girls know you by name you might want to give Mealtime Express a try and have them turn on the newly renovated Boblo train,” Norm added.

Town seeking input from businesses on refreshment vehicles By Ron Giofu
The Town of Amherstburg has gone to the business community to seek input on refreshment vehicles and where they should be located locally. After a pair of public meetings, the town is still seeking more input. Two sessions were held last Thursday at the Libro Centre with one meeting in the morning and a second one in the evening. Only three businesses attended each meeting with some coming for both meetings. The meetings were moderated by manager of licensing and enforcement Nicole Rubli and licensing officer Andrea Pelaccia. Rubli pointed out she was directed by council to hold public consultations following council’s denial of an exemption to the current bylaw for delegate Camille Jabbour to have a hot dog cart in Toddy Jones Park in April. She added that Bill Deslippe was granted an exemption at the Aug. 12 meeting for a truck to be permanently established at the Waterfront Ice Cream Parlour. The issue is “generally businesses versus refreshment vehicles,” Rubli noted, and that businesses pay “a hefty amount of property taxes” while refreshment vehicles are subject to a $78 licensing fee for the season. “I think the most contentious issue is setbacks,” said Rubli. Current town regulations prohibit a refreshment vehicle within 200 metres of a restaurant or snack bar or 400 metres from other refreshment vehicles. The town is also seeking input on permit fees, seasonal vs. special event permits, roaming and fixed locations, hours of operation, waste management and public health concerns. Other considerations include whether to have refreshment vehicles in “lively and connected
community spaces” though there would be restrictions based on zoning. “There are currently no licensed spots on public property that are for seasonal refreshment vehicles,” said Rubli. Among the sites the town has looked at include Ranta Park, having one spot in Toddy Jones Park, Malden Centre Park and other neighbourhood parks. Should the town ever go that route, the question would then be to how to allocate those spots with Don Ouellette from Joyful Lynne’s Kitchen suggesting they could be on a yearly rotational basis. The current 200m setbacks from restaurants are higher than many other Ontario municipalities, Rubli stated. According to statistics she read to those in attendance, London’s restriction is 25m, Chatham is 91m, Oshawa has a 20m restriction, Whitby has a 60m restriction while Windsor’s bylaw is set at 30m. “We have to look at what is going to work in the Town of Amherstburg,” she said. Sarah Beaudoin, owner of Speck’s Restaurant on Bathurst St., said she wasn’t against refreshment vehicles but believed some sort of setback was important. “You just can’t pull up in front of an existing business and set up shop,” she said. Rubli indicated that the town wants feedback and that it could be challenging to prepare a report for council later this fall if there are not a lot of comments from the public. She admitted to wanting greater attendance during last Thursday’s meetings but added there is still an opportunity for the community to give its thoughts. The public can e-mail their thoughts and/ or concerns to licensing@amherstburg.ca by Sept. 6. Should there be any new regulations or a new bylaw, Rubli noted it wouldn’t come into effect until next year.

Nicole Rubli, the town’s manager of licensing and enforcement, points to a slide during one of two public meetings the Town of Amherstburg had with regards to refreshment vehicles last Thursday. The town is welcoming more feedback from local businesses at licensing@amherstburg.ca.
A pair of refreshment vehicles are seen here on the grounds of Fort Malden National Historic Site during Art by the River last weekend. The location of refreshment vehicles and when they can operate is being looked at as part of a report being put together by town administration.

Yard sale for shelter in the Congo raises $14,000
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Yard sale customers look over some of the items that were on sale at the recent Hope of St. Joseph yard sale. The event was held at the County Road 10 (Middle Side Road) home of Marc and Mary Beneteau and raised $14,000. By Ron Giofu The charity yard sale for the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter has raised big bucks again this year. The yard sale, held the weekends of Aug. 2-5 and Aug. 9-11 at the Middle Side Road home of Marc and Mary Beneteau, raised a total
of $14,000 this year. That tops last year’s total of $13,000. Mary Beneteau noted they had an overall goal of $22,000 for the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter and reached that as well. That includes the $14,000 raised at the yard sale with the additional $8,000 coming from
selling items online and through private donations. “We had a goal based on 42 girls at $500 each Canadian,” said Beneteau. Proceeds will help send the girls in the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter, located in the DR Congo, to school. The shelter is operated
by Father Donato Lwiyando, a former associate pastor at St. John the Baptist Church in Amherstburg. Beneteau noted the number of girls is always fluid, noting that girls are sometime able to be reunited with their parents. She added they carefully manage all donations and try to get the best value for them with donations for the yard sale being of “outstanding” quality this year. Volunteers were also top notch during the yard sale as well, Beneteau noted, including one young man who helped fix sports related items and donated his tips to the shelter. “We want to encourage young people to help us,” said Beneteau. The weather held up, she noted, though it was hot both weekends. The support of the community was also appreciated, with those associated with the shelter locally grateful

Beneteau added that a neighbour – Jack Chamberlain – helped provide a tent and that if others have tents they can provide, that would be appreciated as well.

Yard sale for shelter a huge success
Continued from Page 11 Most of the leftover items have been donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Beneteau noted, with some additional items being donated to Habitat for Humanity. “We’re still accepting cash donations,” she said. “If people have items we could sell online, we’ll accept those too. If we can keep selling items online, we’ll be able to make some more money.” People interested in making donations can call Beneteau at 519-736-6263. “We were overwhelmed with the success (of the yard sale) and we couldn’t have done it without the support of the donors and of the community,” she emphasized. “I consider their donations to be gifts. These are gifts helping us to support the shelter.” Father Donato also expressed his thanks in a letter he sent from the DR Congo. “I wanted to start this message hailing and wishing a good day to everybody in Amherstburg, especially to those who are working hard to raise money to get the Saint Joseph's girls in school and to live with dignity and look at their futures with hope,” he said. “But I think it's better to start
it by calling God's blessing upon each one of you, to highlight our faith in His presence and His deeds through your deeds. May He be blessed for showing His generosity through His children to His little ones. So, receive all our thanksgivings for all the time and energy you are spending to get these girls to live with dignity and to be in school. Thank you so much for your donations and time. You have given a poor child a chance to smile and dance.” Father Donatio noted he sent the message from the east of the Congo, specifically from the city of Bukavu. “As a religious (person), I am living at the Provincial House of the Xaverian Missionaries, and with my provincial, Fr. Amato, we are taking care of two houses, the St Joseph's Shelter, which is for the girls, and the Solidarity House, that is soon to be called St Mary's Shelter for the boys,” he said. “I am also in charge of the University Parish called ‘Aumonerie de l'ISP’, in Bukavu, where I have around 3,000 people every Sunday. At first I had people standing outside during the whole Mass because there was no more room inside the church. It was time to start a second Mass to allow people to pray as it should be.” Father Donato stated his principal activity is to take care of the two

Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association stays busy hosting tournaments
The Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association presented pee wee and bantam wrap-up tournaments last weekend with much of the pee wee action (pictured) being at Centennial Park. The Essex County District School Board and most recent tournament was a pee wee and bantam season-ending wrap-up tournament that Dan Hebert, one of the main organizers, said attracted 160 players and their families to Amherstburg. “It’s probably about 500 people we’ve drawn to town,” he said. There were eight pee wee teams that played mainly at Centennial Park with teams coming from Forest Glade, Belle River, Lucan-Ildertdon, Leamington, Tecumseh and LaSalle, with the latter having two teams. Teams that came either didn’t qualify for their division’s OBA tournament or they were some of the best teams of “Selects” players in the region. A total of six bantam teams participated with the Amherstburg Cardinals being joined by baseball teams from Riverside, Forest Glade, Woodslee, Windsor and Leamington. the new public high school will be built on the land. Last year had been considered the final year, but the public school board allowed the Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association one more season on the four diamonds. Hebert noted that despite the AMBA no longer having use of Centennial Park after this season, all of the games and practices will be moved to Malden Centre Park. “There will be baseball in Amherstburg next year,” he said. “Everything that happened at Centennial Park will now be at Malden.” The previous weekend saw the midget house league tournament occur at the Libro Centre (with the exception of one
game at Malden Centre Park), with six teams vying for the South Shore Interlock Baseball (SSIB) championship. Hebert pointed out the host Cardinals were joined by two Leamington teams, and other teams from Windsor, Forest Glade and Essex. Forest Glade downed Windsor South Canadians 13-0 in the finals. The final game in the midget house league tournament was delayed over two hours by rain, Hebert noted, but Libro Centre staff worked with AMBA and helped fix up the diamond so the final game could be played. Amherstburg went 2-1 in that tournament, good for a fourth place finish.

Admirals coaches, management get look at players at training camp

By Ron Giofu The Integrity Amherstburg Admirals are another step closer to setting their 2019-20 Jr. C hockey roster. The Admirals held their training camp last weekend at the Libro Centre and had two days of practices and scrimmages and while the roster won’t be finalized for about a week or two, steps were made to see who will be on this year’s team and who won’t be. Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon was pleased with what he saw on the ice. “I thought it went really well,” he said. “I think it was as good of a camp as we’ve had. It was very competitive.” While rookies are looking to crack the lineup, Bortignon was also happy with what he saw from returning players. “I thought we had some veteran players that really stepped up and played very well,” he said. “That’s something that, as a coach, that is really reassuring when you see that out there from your veteran players.” One veteran player that stood out was Max Clifford, with Bortignon stating he was the best player on the ice and competed hard at both ends of the rink. Though there were about six to eight players cut after the weekend training camp, some of the other younger players will still have a shot at making the team. “We still have some open spots,” Bortignon said. “We’ll probably carry something in the neighbourhood of 18 forwards and eight or nine defensemen into this week.” Additional practices and scrimmages will be held but the coach said, “I think we’re down to the nitty gritty” and there are a few guys still battling for spots on this year’s team. “We’re definitely in a good position to compete,” said Bortignon. The Admirals are looking to play faster this year and players are buying into that, he added. Within a few weeks, the Admirals will be trimming their roster further. “I would say right now that six or seven more players will have to be released before our season starts (in Lakeshore) Sept. 20,” said Bortignon. However, he added the roster will likely be set after the Sept. 10 exhibition game in Essex. The exhibition schedule opens Sept. 4 in Wheatley with the only home exhibit tilt being a rematch with the Sharks Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. The regular season home opener is Sept. 29 versus the Mooretown Flags at 7 p.m.

Sr. Cardinals conclude regular season by knocking off first place Woodslee By Ron Giofu
The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team finished the regular season with a win over the team in first place in the Essex County Senior League standings. The Cardinals travelled to Reg Chevalier Park in Woodslee last Wednesday night and came away with a 10-7 victory over the Orioles senior team. It was a big night for Amherstburg’s Brady Levack, who went two-for-three and had five RBI’s. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but Amherstburg clawed back with two of their own in the third inning thanks to a two-run single by Nick Price. Woodslee reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning but that would be the last lead the Orioles would have on the night. Levack put Amherstburg ahead 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to his two-run home run that cleared the fence in right-centre field. It wouldn’t be the last time Levack was heard from, as he connected for a bases loaded triple in the top of the sixth inning that cleared the bases. Amherstburg would end up scoring five run in the sixth inning, with other runs coming thanks to a Tristan Bouchat RBI single and a force out by Sebastian Hebert that scored a run. That scoring outburst put the Cardinals 9-3 after the top half of the sixth, but the Orioles got a home run of their own in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-4. The speed of Cody Brown was on display in the top of the seventh as he scored from second on a force out to make it a 10-4 game. Woodslee would battle back with three of their own in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any more and Amherstburg picked up the win. The Cardinals finished the regular season 13-11 while Woodslee dropped to 17-5. The Cardinals are battling for second place in the standings but Harrow, one of the teams they are battling, still have games in hand. “The first at-bat started off slow and then after that, (the Woodslee pitcher) was throwing right down the middle and I took advantage of it,” said Levack. Levack added he has been hitting well lately. “I’ve been right on the edge recently,” he said, noting he hit one off the wall for an extra-base hit in Harrow and tripled the game before that. He added “it was a close game” until his home run put the Cardinals up by a run

and his double was during an inning where they broke the game open. “It always feels good to take down the first place team,” he said. Noting that it is a good time to be playing well as the Cardinals enter the OBA tournament in Port Lambton Labour Day weekend, Levack said the team is playing well and they are going to see how it goes and try to continue their recent good play.

Local school welcomes travel hockey team from Markham
A minor midget hockey team from Markham not only played exhibition games in the area last week, they stayed at a local school. The Markham Majors AAA hockey team came to the area for its training camp for the 2019-20 hockey season and stayed at St. Peter’s ACHS College School
in Amherstburg for the weekend. The team came in last Thursday and stayed through last Sunday, including two exhibition games with the Sun County Panthers at the Vollmer Centre in LaSalle. Markham’s head coach Paul Cozza said the coaching staff discussed taking the team out-of-town for training camp and decided on St. Peter’s ACHS School due to a connection with the school’s principal Peter Thyrring. Cozza said they reached out to Thyrring and arranged the visit. The team stayed at the County Road 20 school and Cozza noted they did activities at the school, including an obstacle course, and tried to make the visit fun before the season starts. They also collected all the cell phones from the 15-year-old players and had them focus on talking and communicating with one another. “We’re really focused on communicating and not looking at cell phones during dinner,” said Cozza. Cozza noted that “our journey with Peter didn’t begin today” and it actually dates back a number of years. Team manager Michael Facchinelli has known Thyrring for years and helped facilitate the visit. “I’ve known Peter from when I was a kid,” said Facchinelli. Facchinelli added that Thyrring is always around a rink so that helped make the visit to the area the right fit. Thyrring said the Markham team had several places to choose from and chose to come to the area. “We won out over three other facilities,” said Thyrring. “It’s huge. It’s good for the school, it’s good for the community and it’s a good opportunity. It’s phenomenal. I’m glad their guys came here.”

Camp receives more funding Continued from Page 6
Essex MP Tracey Ramsey (centre) recognized the Sunshine Point Camp last Saturday night with Kiwanis Club president Tina Gatt (left) and past president Dan Inverarity (right) pointing out the federal government’s recent Summer Jobs Grant that Ramsey secured to help hire camp counsellors.
Essex Mayor Larry Snively called the gala “a great event” and thanked those in attendance for supporting the camp. “Hats off to everyone who donated to this camp,” said Snively. “This is a great, great organization. Hats off to the volunteers.” Essex Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche added his thanks as well, including to Inverarity for his work over the years. Essex MP Tracey Ramsey added she attended the County Road 50 camp as a
youth and knows the value of it. “Every year, it’s wonderful to come out and see the changes that are being added. Every year is an improvement,” said Ramsey. Ramsey thanked Gatt, Inverarity and the entire club for doing their part to help area children have a camp experience. “Because of people like you, children’s lives are being changed,” she said. “Having a positive experience away from home is such an important part of a child’s life.”
CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF AMHERSTBURG NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING
www.rivertowntimes.com
Sr. Cardinals playoff bound Continued from Page 19
“We’re a big momentum team,” he said. “It’s nice to get the win going into the OBA’s.” The senior Cardinals will play Petrolia in their first game at the OBA tournament with the winner to play the Essex Yellowjackets. Woodslee is another of the Essex County teams in the OBA tournament. Amherstburg was in Woodslee last Tuesday night as well for a scheduled doubleheader against the junior Orioles. The teams were tied 4-4 in the fourth inning of the first game when rain rolled in and wiped out the rest of the action. The teams will not make up the doubleheader and each team was awarded a 1-0 victory over the other. The Essex County Senior League playoffs will start in mid-September.
TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg will hold a public meeting on Monday, September 23, 2019 commencing at 4:00 p.m. in the Town of Amherstburg Council Chambers, 271 Sandwich Street South, Amherstburg, Ontario, to consider a proposed amendment to the Town of Amherstburg Zoning By-law 1999-52 under Section 34 of the Planning Act, RSO 1990 cP.13. THE SUBJECT LAND affected by the proposed amendment is described as a portion of Part of Lot 14, Concession 7, municipally known as E/S Howard Ave, previously. The portion of the property that is the subject of the rezoning is 490 ft frontage on County Road 8 (North Sideroad) and 630 ft depth with a total area of 7.09 acres (see key map below). THE PURPOSE OF THE AMENDMENT is to change the zoning of the subject lands noted above from the “Agricultural (A) Zone” to “Special Provision Heavy Industrial (HI-8) Zone”. The parcel is designated Heavy Industrial in the Town’s Official Plan. THE EFFECT OF THE ZONING BY-LAW AMENDMENT will be to allow for the use on the subject property as a transport truck parking lot and to exempt this development from the requirement of Section 22(3)(g) to fence any part of the lot used for permitted open storage. A definition of transport truck parking lot will be added to the Zoning By-law. The proposed transport truck parking lot will be subject to site plan control in accordance with the Town’s Site Plan Control By-law. ANY PERSON may attend the public meeting and/or make written or verbal representation in support of or in opposition to the proposed Zoning By-law Amendment. IF A PERSON OR PUBLIC BODY would otherwise have an ability to appeal the decision of the Council for the Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal but the person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg before the by-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision.
Tristan Bouchat slaps hands with manager Dennis Ouellette as Bouchat comes home with one of the ten Amherstburg runs in the Cardinals’ 10-7 victory over Woodslee last Wednesday night.
IF A PERSON OR PUBLIC BODY does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg before the by-law is passed, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal unless, in the opinion of the Tribunal, there is reasonable grounds to do so. Notice of Public Meeting Amendments to Fees Under the Building Code Act The Town of Amherstburg invites you to attend a Public Meeting pursuant to the Building Code Act, as amended, and Ontario Regulation 332/12, regarding proposed amendments to the current User Fees By-law for building services. This meeting will allow the public an opportunity to review and provide comments on the related staff report and the proposed User Fees By-law for fees under the Building Code Act.
The Sinkie’s Striders team walk down Dalhousie St. in order to raise funds for Parkinson Canada. Continued from Page 26 “I found about the (Parkinson’s Super Walk) last year but I was too late to go in it,” he said, adding the Windsor walk this year is Sept. 8. Due to family and other obligations, Sinclair couldn’t participate in this year’s walk so, with the help of grandson Ryley, got a walk started in Amherstburg. Sinclair worked with the town and thanked executive assistant Dawn Morencie for her help. He added that McArthur and Councillor Patricia Simone also showed their support. Not only did they want to raise money in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease, Sinclair added they also wanted to raise
awareness of the disease and to show those who have it that they have people who are thinking of them. “We want people with Parkinson’s to know we care about them,” said Sinclair. They also wanted to educate the community about the disease and to hopefully expand their efforts in Amherstburg next year. Sinclair said they would like to see a Super Walk one day in the southern part of Essex County and hoped town council will help support and champion the cause. He added that Parkinson Canada provided assistance to him as well. For more information or to donate to Parkinson Canada, visit www.parkinson. ca.
The Town of Amherstburg has conducted a review of the building permit fees under Section 7(b) of the Building Code Act. The effect will be to increase certain fees currently stated in “Schedule B” of By-law 2019-010, and/or add new fees that will clarify and introduce consistency to other permits not listed. Information will be provided at the meeting on the amount of the proposed fees and the rationale for changing or imposing the fees.
