Puzzle lovers gather for Escape Room & Games Festival

By Jonathan Martin Puzzle aficionados had a nice escape Saturday at the second annual Escape Room and Games Festival.

Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada hosted the event for the second year in a row. Ten escape rooms, including five from Hidden Train Escape Rooms, Exodus Escape Rooms and Breakout Escape Rooms, challenged participants to solve puzzles in order to escape rooms in which they had been locked.

Fort Malden’s employees designed five of their own, as well, tossing players into historically befuddling situations.

Scherie Beneteau and Bill Dudar took the plunge for the first time last weekend.

“We needed hints,” Dudar laughed.

“Having never done one before, being tossed in (the escape rooms) with no background knowledge was a very unique experience.”

The day wasn’t only about the rooms, though.

Giant Yahtzee (which the Fort named “Yard-Zee”), bowling, checkers, tic-tac-toe, croquet, ring toss, badminton, board games and a watergun battlefield were provided by

Charity yard sale raises funds for shelter in the Congo Event continues this Friday-Sunday at the Middle Side Road home of Marc & Mary Beneteau

Donations come in to where they fill the couple’s basement, garage, barn before finally being able to go outside.

“It’s all donations,” she said, “even from people I don’t know. They are people so willing to help out. One way to help out is to donate stuff you don’t use anyway. We’re very grateful. This year, we got some nice stuff.”

The yard sale features books, clothing, movies, dishes, toys, small furniture items and more spread out across the Beneteaus’ yard. If people stopped in and didn’t see something they liked, Mary encourages them to come back as donations will keep coming in throughout the week in preparation for the second weekend of the sale.

The yard sale raised approximately $3,000 in its first year, about $7,000 in its second year with last year’s sale generating about $13,000, including a pair of $1,000 donations.

“It’s been a lot of work for a long time,” said Mary, of the yard sale. “It’s been going well. All of the proceeds go to putting the kids in school. People can get a tax receipt for donations over $20.

There’s no middle man. Every penny goes to the education of the kids.”

Schooling costs $500 per child, she stated, so planning for the yard sale starts early in order to raise as much money as they can.

“I’ve been working on this since April/May,” said Mary.

By Ron Giofu The Windsor Police Service is touting 911 enhancements it says will benefit the Town of Amherstburg.

According to an online news release posted by Sgt. Steve Betteridge “calling 911 in an emergency is a fantastic technological tool that helps save countless lives each and every year. 911 is the number to call for an emergency requiring police, fire, or ambulance. If you have ever called 911, you may recall a calm, cool voice on the other end of the line requesting information to assist first responders. What we often may not think about is how the 911 system works.”

Betteridge pointed out that the Windsor Police Service Emergency 911 Centre, located at its downtown Windsor headquarters, operates as the Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PPSAP) for the City of Windsor when it comes to 911 calls.

“Simply put, we answer the phone. All 911 calls for service are received at this location and then referred to the appropriate first responder - police, fire, or ambulance,” he stated.

Essex County Steam & Gas Museum gearing up for annual show

By Ron Giofu The 35th annual Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Show is this weekend and some of the preparations were taking place last Friday in an Amherstburg field.

A group of about 20 volunteers were in a Concession 5 North field owned by local farmer Tony Simon last Friday afternoon cutting wheat and loading bales onto two trailers so that the wheat can be used in a threshing machine at this weekend’s show.

The binder is a 1922 Massey-Harris model with it being towed by a 1940 Massey-Harris tractor.

Massey-Harris tractors and equipment are being

featured this year.

Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Museum president Gary Struhar noted that there will be a lot of new and returning activities and events this year.

The Lazy G Ranch will present its Silver Stars team Saturday at noon.

The Military Muster will be back and showing their collection as well.

“They haven’t had a show for about three or four years,” Struhar said of the Military Muster. “They’re bringing their stuff for the second straight year.

We’re teaming up with them.”

The event will also feature tractor pulls, children’s activities including “turkey in the straw” where kids

can find tokens of various dollar values, food booths, sawmill demonstration, a Saturday night chicken and ribs dinner in the Co-An Park pavilion for $15 and, of course, the vintage tractors and threshing machine demonstrations.

The OVTPA tractor pull starts at noon Sunday.

The Happy Together Duo will perform on stage at 12 noon Sunday with Cross Eyed Cat performing at 2:30 p.m.

There will also be speakers geared towards women, Struhar added. At 1 p.m. Saturday, “Queen’s Daughter” author Melissa McCormick will be speaking on the topic of violence towards women.

Betteridge added: “With the 911 call now coming directly to our headquarters first, the entire response time is enhanced - translating into increased community safety.”

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said the town is happy with the changeover to Windsor police and the 911 issues “was something that came up since.”

DiCarlo noted there were issues at the county level and that everyone was locked into the same contract with the province but “for some reason, they let us out of the contract.”

The switch to local 911 has been worked on for a few months, the mayor stated.

“It’s definitely an enhancement,” said DiCarlo. “They are picking it up at no charge.”

Awards part of the proceedings at Emancipation Celebration

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Freedom Museum maintained an annual tradition at the Emancipation Celebration and started a new one.

As part of Friday night’s event, the museum presented three Mac Simpson Awards to local students. The award is named in memory of museum co-founder Melvin “Mac” Simpson and is given annually to at least one student of African descent who attended a secondary school in Windsor-Essex County and will be pursuing post-secondary education

starting in the fall.

One of the three students was a General Amherst High School graduate. Hallee Kejick earned one of the awards and she will be heading to Carleton University in September in the transnational law and human rights program. Kejick aims to be a human rights lawyer.

Kejick’s volunteer background includes the Amherstburg Freedom Museum where she has been involved with Ribs & Ragtime, with other volunteer work including the Emancipation golf tournament and the Greater Essex County District School Board’s

Morris Kurzuk, the Amherstburg resident who owns the 1922 Massey-Harris binder, said he rode it when he was 16-years-old.

“I’m 84 now and I’m still riding,” said Kurzuk.

The Essex County Steam & Gas Engine Show is at Co-An Park in McGregor from 12-6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $2 for children 6-12 years and free for children under six. A three-day pass is $12.

Kejick noted that generations of her family have given back, and she plans on continuing that tradition.

Her career goals also include her wanting to fight for fairness and equal treatment for all.

Lyric Davis, a graduate of W.F. Herman Academy, and Manar Kowa, a graduate of Walkerville Collegiate, were the other two Mac Simpson Award recipients.

Davis also thanked the museum for recognizing her as she pursues the mathematics and statistics program at McMaster University with the intent of becoming an actuary. Kowa will be heading to St. Clair College for its dental hygiene program.

The Amherstburg Freedom Museum also presented its first-ever Legacy Hero Award, with it being present posthumously to former Windsor police officer Alton C. Parker.

Parker was the first Black uniformed officer in the Windsor Police Service, joining in 1942. He was the first Black detective in Canada when he was promoted to that rank in 1951. His community work includes the Greater Windsor Foundation, the Baptist Men’s Council, Alpha Group, Brentwood and the Windsor Goodfellows. He and wife Evelyn also impacted the lives of young children in Windsor-Essex County by hosting “Uncle Al’s Kids Party” for those who couldn’t afford to go to camp. It grew from 45 kids to roughly 1,000.

For the past 20 years, 40 to 60 people have converged on the driveway of 82 Rankin Ave. each summer.

They share food, drinks and memories with their neighbours, talk about the past year’s adventures and dream about those that the next year might hold.

Lynda Marotte is one of the neighbours who started the tradition and hosts the event. This year, her daughter, Landis, is set to be married, so the block party buzzed with a special atmosphere of excitement.

“We’ve never skipped a year, but we almost did this year because my daughter is getting married,” Marotte said. “It’s number 20, though, so how could we?”

Marotte hosts the event each year because her driveway is large enough to accommodate all the guests. She, her son and her next-door neighbour,

Jacquie Gibb, set up a tent, chairs and tables covering the bulk of the driveway, a buffet in the back yard and kept cool drinks on hand to keep the summer heat at bay.

“We’re running almost on autopilot now,” Gibb said. “It’s really not that much work.”

The women said they started the tradition, along with the late Bob Sutherland and Marotte’s parents, because they live on a “beautiful street with wonderful people.”

The event is informal, but they said it forms strong bonds with their neighbours. Even after moving away, old neighbours still return each year to attend the block party, catch up with old friends and keep the tradition alive.

Marotte said that next year, they’ll do it all over again.

Prizes awarded after Gibson Gallery’s “Essex County Blossoms” exhibit

By Ron Giofu The many blooms found around the region were celebrated the last few weeks at the Gibson Gallery.

The gallery’s “Essex County Blooms” exhibit concluded with its closing reception July 28 with the juried show crowning its winners. The show was intended to showcase the many blossoms, from flowers to fruit, that can be found around Essex County.

“We had a really good response for this exhibit,” said the Gibson Gallery’s Bonnie Deslippe, who estimated there were 32 submissions.

Ann Ducharme won for her work “Annabelle Hydrangea” while Bev Hill took second for her work “Marigold.” Lorraine Moon captured third prize for “Petal Perfect.”

Judges included artist Bobbi Wagner, Paulette Drouillard from the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society, the town’s parks manager Annette Zahaluk and artist Carol Winters.

“The town’s tourism department approached us about a year ago,” Deslippe explained, as a horticultural convention was known to be coming to Windsor.

“Our exhibit committee discussed it and thought this was a great idea.”

A call was put out to artists and a busload from the convention did come to Amherstburg to view the works last week.

“We’re very happy with the work that came in,” said Deslippe.

Moon said she was happy with her third place finish, adding it took 40 hours to complete. It went from a 7 a.m. photo at a friend’s home, to a sketch before painting it. She said it was one of her first works with her portfolio now having 21.

“My husband teases me about how many petals the painting has,” she said. “I say ‘don’t ask.’”

Moon will also be part of Art by the River for the first time this year, with that scheduled to be at Fort Malden National Historic Site Aug. 24-25 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days.

The next exhibit at the Gibson Gallery is “Colour & Movement” by artists Hazel Riley and Vivian Klinck.

That is open now and runs through Aug. 25. See related story on Page 8.

By Ron Giofu It was a busy night for the Rotary Club of Amherstburg last Wednesday.

Not only did the local service club make its annual donation to the Easter Seals, the club honoured some of its members for their service over the past year and beyond.

The Rotary Club presented $1,000 in cheques to Easter Seals, represented by fundraising specialist Rebecca Rivard, with that money being raised primarily from the Martin Breshamer Memorial Pasta Dinner that was held earlier in the year.

“It’s a big boost for us,” noted Rivard.

Rivard pointed out the money will be put towards acquiring accessibility equipment for children with disabilities, including such items as wheelchairs and bath lifts, scholarships and camps. The closest camp for Easter Seals children is Camp Woodeden near London.

The money comes at an opportune moment, she added.

“It’s a big boost for us at a much needed time,” said Rivard.

Rivard added “Rotary has always been a huge supporter” of Easter Seals and praised their involvement.

Bob Pillon, the Rotarian who chairs the club’s Easter Seals efforts, was pleased with how things turned out and with the donation.

“It turned out well,” said Pillon.

Pillon said they plan on promoting the pasta dinner further to increase attendance, noting the 2019 dinner had about 75 people attend.

“We’re always hoping to try and increase it,” said Pillon. “We’re happy to do it and look forward to making it better next year.”

There were also other awards presented that night as well. Past president Joan Donaldson presented a “Rotarian of the Year” plaque to club treasurer John Sutton for his ongoing efforts. Sutton, who will become president in the 2020-21 year, was credited for consistently demonstrating the values of a Rotarian with Donaldson adding that “this person just took his game up.”

Sutton helped get the club’s “financial health in order” and is also involved with other subcommittees such as

the Ribfest and the committee that organized last year’s Montreal Canadiens alumni game.

“You take every activity and event that comes your way with such sincerity and dedication,” said Donaldson.

Sutton shared credit for the award with his fellow Rotarians.

“Anyone in the club could have gotten this award,” he said. “I’m grateful and honoured to accept this. It goes to show what you can do by working together.”

Sutton, Donaldson and Dan Hunt were also recognized with “Super Rotarian” pins by assistant governor Peggy Little during the meeting. Little recognized the trio’s efforts over the last couple of years in building the club back up.

“You’ve turned it around,” said Little. “Your club is thriving. All of you should be very, very proud of what you have accomplished in the last two years.”

The Gibson Art Gallery is alive with colour and movement now that Hazel Riley and Vivian Klinck have hung their art on its walls.

Riley received her formal art training in Trinidad and Tobago. Her work spans a variety of mediums, but this exhibit, a collaboration with Klinck, whose work is mostly impressionistic, shares a common energetic vibration.

From high-contrast, pointillist eclipses to heavily-saturated portraits, all the pieces in the show explode with a punch of colour, dizzying diagonals and an unabashed exploration of artistic form.

“We started planning this around a year ago,” Riley said. “I’m celebrating my 75th (birthday) this year, so I’m going to enjoy it.”

Riley and Klinck paint together at the Gibson Art Gallery each Thursday.

“I draw inspiration from the artists with whom I collaborate,” Klinck said.

“This exhibit, in large part, is because of them.”

Klinck said she also draws inspiration from Van Gogh, his “unique approach to the artistic process” and his style of painting.

Her work and Riley’s go well together, she said, because of their similar energy.

“Everyone will see something

different in the individual pieces,” she said. “As a whole, I think they fit together very well.”

Local youth hitting the dirt bike racing circuit

Wesley McLean has won multiple awards on the dirt bike racing circuit and is looking for more.

By Ron Giofu Racing dirt bikes is becoming a McLean family tradition and sevenyear-old Wesley is reaping the benefits.

Wesley McLean has been on the track since he was four-years-old and over the last two years alone, has chalked up seven first place finishes on the

Amateur Motocross Ontario (AMO) series circuit. He travels with his family, including dad Shane and mom Hailey, to places like Owen Sound, Tillsonburg and Ottawa to compete.

“I like to go fast,” the young dirt bike racer said. “I’ve done it for three years.

My dad was riding. On my fourth birthday, I got a Suzuki 50 cc dirt bike.

It went very fast.”

Wesley estimates he competes in about 15 races per year. It was Shane’s dream to have a house with dirt bike tracks and now their Front Road North home has a pair of tracks on the property where his children practice.

Wesley said he is out there at least twice per week, though one of the

tracks near the Canard River has been flooded out this year.

Wesley has two bikes now – a Cobra Jr. 50 cc and a Cobra Sr. 50 cc – and races in the 4-6 age group as his birthday was only a couple of months ago. Hailey explained that classes are based on the child’s age at the start of the year.

“Hopefully he finishes in the top three in Canada and can be on the podium,” she said.

Wesley’s favourite trick right now is a “no footer,” a jump where he puts his feet out, but he is aiming higher.

“My dream is to do a backflip when I’m 10-years-old,” he said, adding he wants to turn professional when he gets older.

His next competition is the Walton Trans-Can Amateur Nationals where he will ride against dirt bikers his age from across Canada. He has no shortage of confidence as he heads there.

“I’ll be able to beat them,” Wesley said.

Both Shane and Hailey admit it’s hard to watch their son compete as Wesley is an aggressive rider.

Sr. Cardinals drop to 10-8 on the season after loss in Woodslee Cards return to the Libro Centre this Friday night to battle the Essex Yellowjackets

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team dropped their fourth game in a row last Wednesday night.

The Cardinals’ only game of the week was an 8-1 loss to the first-place Woodslee Orioles senior team at Reg Chevalier Park in Woodslee.

The game started well in the first inning as Matt Bassingthwaighte’s RBI single brought Nick Price across home plate.

However, things turned sour after that for the Cardinals as a dropped fly ball with two outs opened the door for Woodslee to score four that inning and they tacked on four more before all seven innings were played.

“We took the lead in the first and let the rest of the game get away from us,” said Price. “We left way too many runners on base. We had six hits, but it wasn’t enough.”

Price said leaving runners on base has been a trend lately for the Amherstburg squad.

“We’re getting guys on base, but we’re just not driving them in,” said Price. “The defense is playing well. We’re on a bit of a slide right now. We’re going to take the long weekend off and regroup.”

Price went three-for-four in the game and said he has been hitting well lately.

“I’m on a bit of a hot stretch,” he said. “I’d like to keep hitting.”

The Cardinals were missing some players the last few games and hope to get a lot of those players back this week when Essex County Senior League action resumes.

Golf tournament helps raise funds in the battle against ovarian cancer

“There can be side effects, but you do what you have to do and put one foot forward in front of the other,” she said.

There is no pre-screening for ovarian cancer, Gattozzi noted, unlike other forms of cancer.

Symptoms are often “vague,” she said, and misdiagnosed with women sometimes not discovered to have the disease until they’ve had it for some time.

Proceeds from the tournament will go towards research with the money to be donated to Ovarian Cancer Canada in Toronto. That is the only charity in Canada specifically dealing with ovarian cancer research. The tournament ended up raising $30,000.

“Our dream is to have our own school (in Bukavu, DR Congo),” explained Mary. “There is a piece of property right next to the shelter. If we could get that, we could put the school right there.”

As it is now, students have to walk an hour each way from the shelter to their current school each day.

“Our own school would give them a much more positive view towards learning,” she said.

Students range from elementary to college level with some enjoying a new carpentry program. Some have difficulty reading, she added, while others work in the fields growing cassava, corn and beans.

The second weekend of the charity yard sale is this Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

Exodus Escape Rooms brought in a tutorial room for new initiates, like Beneteau and Dudar, as well, in order to explain the way escape rooms work.

“Last year, the park looked kind of empty because everyone was in an escape room,” Corrine Ross, Fort Malden’s visitor team leader, said. “This year, we decided to add some variety to the activities and people seem to be loving them.”

Between their scheduled escapes, families milled about the parade square, throwing, batting, spraying and splashing. Friends of Fort Malden provided refreshments, too, so the summer heat was cut by water bottles, soft drinks and beer, which G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. poured from its taps.

Light Sound Action Entertainment Services bumped out the tunes during the day, with Radio Unplugged belting out some rock after 5 p.m.

“We’re having a really great time,” Beneteau said, smiling. “It’s really hard, but it’s a lot of fun.”

Some rooms were more challenging than others. James Kirk MacLean, who ran Fort Malden’s Mayhem in the Marquis, said his room had a 20 per cent success rate.

“And we’re giving them clues,” he exclaimed. “I guess you just have to change the way you think.”

Parker also won the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship in 1976 and was also named to the Order of Canada. His granddaughter Cherie Steele-Sexton accepted the Legacy Hero Award at Friday night’s banquet at the Fogolar Furlan Club in Windsor. Reading comments on behalf of her mother and herself, Steele-Sexton noted her grandfather was never afraid to stand up for his beliefs or to come to the aid of someone in need.

“He was loved and respected in his community and across the province and country,” she said. “One person can make a difference. An ordinary man can be a hero.”

Museum president Monty Logan also outlined the Freedom Achievers program as part of the Emancipation Celebration.

The initiative, one of four being fundraised for by the Amherstburg Community Foundation, will bring a high-profile speakers series and a youth mentorship program to the museum.

The first speaker has already been announced. Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey will kick the series off later this fall.

The Freedom Achievers program was created out of input received at the Amherstburg Freedom Summit held in 2017.

“We need to invest in our future,” said Logan. “(The youth) are our future and will help us overcome the challenges we have.”

“It’s nervous for us. He rides on the edge so he is very exciting,” said Shane. “He pushes really hard. He’s got an edge to him.”

“He doesn’t take the easy road,” added Hailey.

Wesley will be entering Grade 2 at St. Joseph School in the fall and he said he talks to God each race with the family also having a prayer before the races.

He has suffered injuries, however, including a broken collarbone and a broken arm in 2017.

The family travels in a camper to Wesley’s races with that becoming an expensive hobby. They are looking for financial donors or gas cards to help him achieve his dreams.
