Three surplus ambulances to get new homes By Ron Giofu A trio of surplus ambulances are finding new homes. Essex County council agreed with a request from Essex-Windsor EMS to donate the surplus ambulances to Erie Shores Healthcare, the Nunavut Association of Municipalities and the Hospice of Windsor-Essex. Essex-Windsor EMS (EWEMS) chief Bruce Krauter pointed out that EWEMS replaced seven ambulances under the ongoing asset management plan in 2019 with six being trade-in assets with Crestline Coach and the proceeds placed into reserves. The seventh ambulance was placed into storage as a project was being discussed with a partner within the community to utilize the vehicle, he noted. In 2020, Krauter said EWEMS received approval to replace seven more ambulances and Krauter noted the vehicles “become trade-in assets with Crestline Coach, based on favourable returns, with the proceeds placed into reserves to help cover the inflationary increases of the new vehicles. The anticipated amounts received are expected to be consistent with historical amounts, $5,000 to $8,000 per vehicle.” Krauter noted that EWEMS was

Historically these transfers are completed either by EWEMS or by a third-party private transfer service. The current arrangement has been found to be expensive to the hospital budget, a burden to EWEMS with

low priority responses and the excessive out of hospital loss time for hospital staff.” According to Krauter’s report to county council, ESHC will try a six-month pilot project where ESHC would staff, stock and maintain their own vehicle to complete low priority calls. “It is anticipated that this project will be a success, one that has not been approached anywhere in the province and will benefit the entire region. If the project does not succeed, discussions shall take place to determine if the vehicle asset would return to the county or

remain under the ownership of ESHC,” stated Krauter. The donation to the Nunavut Association of Municipalities will see a serviceable ambulance taken to Quebec before being placed onto a ship and taken to Nunavut and used by the northern indigenous communities of the territory. Krauter described ambulance service there currently as “archaic,” noting they have to use pick-up trucks, wagons or off-road vehicles.

St. Joseph School teams with local performers at annual Christmas concert By Ron Giofu

St. Joseph School received some help from the community at large to once again host their annual Christmas concert. The River Canard Catholic elementary school went next door to St. Joseph Church Friday night where its choir performed to a large crowd of parents, grandparents and other family members inside the historic parish. The choir was directed by teacher Paul van Heugten and was accompanied by Cori McGuire on the flute and soprano Erin Armstrong. This year’s show was entitled “O Come all Ye Faithful…”

Principal Linda DiPasquale said it was the fifth time she attended the concert and she was very impressed by it again this year. “Every year, I am filled with the same level of joy, pride and gratitude,” said DiPasquale, following the performance. DiPasquale said none of it would occur without the dedication and commitment from the school’s choir. She said from September to December, choir members gave up numerous lunch hours and recesses to work on their songs. There were 13 songs performed in all as part of the Friday night show at the church.

“It is incomprehensible that currently, Canadians are receiving healthcare in this fashion,” he said in his report. EWEMS has been told that in 2020, ten ambulances are required and other EMS services are also supporting the request, Krauter said. “Although this donation request does not meet the clear definition of the policy, the merits surely meet the

intent,” said Krauter. “This donation will benefit our fellow Canadians.” The donation to the Hospice of Windsor-Essex County will see patients transported from their home to Hospice locations in Windsor or Leamington as well as to provide transportation to clients for a “life wish” anywhere in the region, with that “life wish” being something like a visit to a local site, beach, park or any type of venue that has a “lasting impression” for palliative care patients. “Under current restraints, legislated requirements and best practice of palliative patients, this transport practice cannot be completed by EWEMS and therefore can become an expensive endeavor for the client’s family. But, the need is a definite benefit to the patient, their families and caregivers,” said Krauter. “In discussion with Hospice and understanding that EWEMS currently has the vehicle in storage, an opportunity to donate the vehicle in 2019 exists that will support a charitable organization within the County. Amherstburg Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche added he also “fully supports the donation,” adding an endorsement of Hospice as “they do an exceptional job.” Warden Gary McNamara remarked that the donation to the Nunavut Association of Municipalities means the southern part of Canada gets to assist the northern part of Canada. He believed it was “good business” to donate to Erie Shores Healthcare and also praised the Deliver Availab y Hospice donation. le “They are going to be put to good use,” McNamara said of the ambulances.

By Ron Giofu A local chapter of a motorcycle club has decided to help make a few families spirits a little bit better at Christmas-time. The local chapter of the Queensmen Motorcycle Club were at the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission last Saturday morning with boxes and bags of food items and gifts as they are sponsoring two families this Christmas. Chapter president Jim Fox said the motorcycle club wants to continue to give back to the community. “Our chapter is in Amherstburg, so we wanted to help the community in Amherstburg,” said Fox. The Queensmen assist with the Miracle League of Amherstburg but Fox said they wanted to continue to do more. When the idea was brought to the members of the club, he said they were 100 per cent behind it. “We want to do more for the community,” said Fox. Fox pointed out “we raised money at different events” throughout the year and went out and purchased the necessary items to ensure the two families they are helping out each have a great Christmas. Those items include turkeys, potatoes, other food items, clothing and gifts. “Our membership put the money in,” said Fox. “This is 100 per cent from the

membership.” The Queensmen were also helped out by the Windsor Moose Lodge, who also donated a pair of $100 grocery gift cards. This was the first year the Queensmen decided to help out the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission, Fox said, but indicated the motorcycle club wants to keep doing it every year. “We want to pay it forward,” said Fox. “What the mission does for Amherstburg is very, very good. We just want to give back at Christmas.” Fox said the wives of the Queensmen members were also a big help in their Christmas campaign. “We couldn’t do this without our wives,” said Fox. “We’re very familyoriented. We want to help families. We know how tough it is.” Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission president Tim McAllister said it was a great donation and there is a need within the community. “They went above and beyond,” McAllister said of the Queensmen. “This is a lot of stuff.” It was estimated that over $1,500 worth of goods was donated to the mission. “It’s like Christmas came early,” said McAllister. “I’m very thankful. I’m smiling as I see people step in to help other people in need.”

Christmas tree in front of the building and headmaster Peter Thyrring said the private boys elementary school is grateful to those who helped them decorate it. The tree is roughly 55 to 60-feet in height and Thyrring believes they are one of the few schools in the area with a lit Christmas tree outdoors. Thyrring said Dan’s Tree Service assisted the school trim and decorate the large tree. “They help the school a lot and we hired them to look after it,” said Thyrring. “They did a phenomenal job. I am very happy with it. The kids are ecstatic with it.” It took roughly three hours to decorate the large tree, Thyrring stated. He added Dan’s Tree Service is a family-run business that also helps the school with firewood. “They are really good to us,” he said. St. Peter’s ACHS College School decorated the tree for the first couple of years they were in the building, which is the former St. Theresa Catholic Elementary School in Malden Centre. St. Peter’s didn’t decorate the tree the last couple of years but decided to have it decorated for the holidays again this year. “This year, we said we’ve got to get it lit up again,” said Thyrring. “It’s Christmas time.” Thyrring added he wants St. Peter’s ACHS College School to not only be a welcoming place for students but

The tree itself is even bigger than it was when the private school first moved in, with Thyrring estimating it has shot up several feet in recent years. “It’s kind of a neat thing for us to do,” he added. “It’s a win-win.” Large Christmas trees have become popular in recent weeks. The Amherstburg Fire Department also helped decorate a Simcoe St. tree in front of the home of ten-year-old Brock Hasson, who is battling cancer for the third time.

Grade 4 students at École St.-Jean Baptiste give to those in need instead of their teacher By Ron Giofu

Many students give gifts to their teachers prior to the Christmas break. However, Jessica Gignac’s Grade 4 class at École St.-Jean Baptiste took things a step further. The class will forgo giving gifts to their teacher and will instead focus on giving back to the community. They raised money to help buy items for three different families at Christmas and also will also be donating a lot of toys and games that they gathered for underprivileged children. The toys, games and food will be distributed through various means, including donations to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission and St. John the Baptist Church. Gignac said they were inspired by École St.-Jean Baptiste’s recent canned food drive, a school-wide campaign that brought in over 2,000 cans and non-perishable food items for the mission. “In lieu of offering me gifts for Christmas this year, we talked as a class about how we can help other people in the community,” said Gignac. The class brainstormed different ideas and decided on several projects including helping their church and the mission as well as other groups. “We also made 128 Christmas cards for the residents at Richmond Terrace (Long-Term Care Home) and we are going to deliver them next week,” Gignac said last Friday afternoon. Gignac said the toys and clothes came in faster than anticipated, adding they also raised $210 to help three families at Christmas. “We’ve been collecting for the last two-and-a-half weeks,” she added, pointing out the students are

DiPasquale referred to van Heugten as the school’s “musical maestro” and thanked McGuire and Armstrong for coming out again this year to add their talents to the concert.

St. Joseph School is a place that prides themselves on a family environment, DiPasquale added. She thanked parents for entrusting their children to the school, adding they “foster the whole child” at St. Joseph School, including opportunities to further not just their academic skills but to improve their athletic, musical and artistic skills as well. “They stood here for one hour and performed so beautifully,” she added of the choir. The choir features students in Grades 3-8. “They are an award winning choir,” DiPasquale told the River Town Times. “(van Heugten) has won several awards at the Kiwanis Festival.” Admission was free to the Christmas concert, but people were invited to make donations that will go to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Concert, fundraising all part of local church’s “Christingle” service By Ron Giofu

A local church maintained an annual tradition and did so with an added twist this year. Christ Anglican Church held its annual “Christingle” service the evening of Dec. 15 with the addition being the return of musicians Tia McGraff and Tommy Parham for a Christmas concert. The two musicians were in Amherstburg in January where they also performed for the 200th anniversary of Christ Church. Father Bill Strang explained that a “Christingle” service was a tradition started in Great Britain and reintroduced by the Church of England a little over 100 years ago. The idea is to raise money for a children’s charity, with Christ Church doing that, and the charity of choice this year was In Honour of the Ones We Love. The “Christingle” consists of an orange, which is symbolic of the world, a red ribbon representing the blood of Christ, four sticks with candy attached representing the four corners of the world and also gifts of the spirit with the candle that was lit during the service representing Jesus Christ. “The services are very informal,” said

Fr. Strang. In addition to donating to a charity, Fr. Strang said a meal is usually offered with this year’s choices being beef stew or vegetarian chili. “It is an outreach program,” he said. Anita Imperioli, founder of In Honour of the Ones We Love, said her family founded the charity after losing a son due to cancer 21 years ago. She said they began volunteering as a family to assist other families who have children and family members going through cancer. Imperioli said there are 900 children in Windsor-Essex County dealing with cancer but noted “there are a lot of expenses.” She added her family had to spend a lot of money on expenses like medications and travel when their son was ill. In Honour of the Ones We Love is also “very involved” with the Ronald McDonald House in Windsor. Imperioli recalled sleeping on the floor of Detroit Children’s Hospital when her son was ill. The charity has raised $14 million since it was founded and she added that Christ Church’s donation “means so much to us.”

Officers assist elderly couple from Etobicoke An Etobicoke couple got home safely thanks to efforts made by the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment. On Sunday December 15, 2019, at 4:30 am, Patrol officers conducted a vehicle stop in the 100 block of Sandwich Street South around 4:30 a.m. Dec. 15 in relation to a white Hyundai observed driving in the area. Officers spoke to an elderly couple in the vehicle and learned they had been driving for several hours after getting lost trying to get home. According to police, the couple from Etobicoke believed they were still in that area and had no idea they had driven all the way to Amherstburg. Officers from the Amherstburg Detachment were concerned for the well-being and safety of the couple and offered to bring the pair to the detachment until family could be located and apprised of the situation. Police say the couple was unable to provide information in relation to any family contacts, however officers were eve ntually able to make contact with members of their family and arrangements were made to pick the couple up in Amherstburg. Officers made sure the couple were as comfortable as possible during their lengthy stay at the detachment as the couple was provided food, a place to rest and watch television. The couple was also checked by medical personnel to ensure there were no health concerns while waiting for family to arrive, police add. Family members ensured the couple was brought home to Etobicoke safely. Police ask the public if there is reason to believe a person should have their drivers licence reviewed or revoked for medical reasons, please see this Ministry of Transportation link: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/medically-unfitdriver-police.shtml “There comes a time in many seniors lives when no longer being able to safely drive becomes a reality. Having conversations with elderly family members about no longer driving can understandably be difficult for all parties involved, however having these conversations are sometimes necessary,” Const. Talya Natyshak of the corporate communications unit posted in a press release. “Starting these conversations early can be very beneficial and make the transition easier. If you have an elderly loved one in your life, we would like to suggest that they have emergency contact information on them at all times if possible. Keeping this information in a prominent place for emergency services personnel to quickly locate is recommended. Some suggestions include; in a visible place in their wallet, on an alert bracelet, in a cell phone marked as an emergency contact, or any place you feel appropriate.”

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, employ various ways of looking at situations that come your way. It is always beneficial to have an open mind. When a new project arrives, maintain your enthusiasm. Breakfast with Santa & the Mayor hosted at Libro Centre By Ron Giofu A popular event for children and their parents returned to the Libro Centre recently, complete with Santa & Mrs. Claus. The town’s recreation department presented its annual “Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor” Dec. 15 with children and their parents being served breakfast by Mayor Aldo DiCarlo and a group of recreation staff members while Santa and Mrs. Claus greeted the children that turned out. “We sold out in two days,” said program co-ordinator Kristen Saunders. “It went very quickly.” Saunders said they were able to accommodate large families as long as they booked ahead and she believes the recreation department will make the event bigger next year as people kept calling after the event sold out. “We may have to expand it next year,” she said. Other than breakfast and a visit with Santa Claus,

there were also crafts for the kids. Turf Tots was also provided free that day. In all, Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor saw 45 children and 52 adults come out in 2019. “I think it’s popular because it’s not overwhelming for the kids,” said Saunders. “It’s good for kids seeing Santa for the first time.” Many of the kids already take programs at the Libro Centre so they are already familiar with the staff, Saunders added. DiCarlo added it was nice to see the event remains popular. “It’s an opportunity to welcome people in the holiday season,” said DiCarlo. “It’s a chance to talk to the residents.” The mayor added that he and council wish everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. “It’s another great event in the Town of Amherstburg,” he said, of the Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor event.

Top, What would Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor be without a visit to the big guy? Elodie and Coen Lemieux take their turn on Santa’s lap. Right, Mayor Aldo DiCarlo serves a sausage to Sawyer Finlay during the recent Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor event at the Libro Centre.

Top, Nicole Jensen and her daughter Julie do some colouring prior to breakfast being served at the recent Breakfast with Santa and the Mayor event.

Alhambra Garcia Caravan #230’s Christmas party packs the McGregor Columbian Club By Ron Giofu

Adults with intellectual disabilities and their support workers and family members packed the Columbian Club hall in McGregor Saturday for an annual tradition. Alhambra Garcia Caravan #230, a local service club based out of McGregor, presented its Christmas party with just shy of 300 people attending. The bulk of them were those with an intellectual disability with 51 different agencies that support people with disabilities represented, according to Alhambra Garcia Caravan #230 grand commander Therese Barichello. “There’s so many reasons why we do it,” said Barichello. “It just makes us feel so good. We are thankful they are here and they are appreciative of everything we have for them.” A team of 25 volunteers helped their guests enjoy the day, whether it be a hot dog lunch, participating in the annual march around the hall or distributing the gifts that Santa Claus brought for them. Guests were able to meet with Santa, get a photo and a gift as well as

having a dance or two as part of the day’s activities. Richard Prieur, a long time member of Caravan #230, said the Christmas party has been presented by the group since its inception in 1982. He indicated it is another way to get people into the Christmas spirit. “It’s grown for sure,” Prieur said of the Christmas party. Barichello said Alhambra Garcia Caravan #230 has a golf tournament in the summer that raises the bulk of the funds for events like the Christmas party. The service club also hosts a boating day in the summer (though last year’s was cancelled due to the high water levels) and a picnic at Co-An Park in McGregor, all for people with intellectual disabilities. There are about 16 people in the local Alhambra club, with Barichello pointing out they are always open to adding new members. Anyone interested in joining Alhambra Garcia Caravan can contact Barichello at 519-734-1881. For more information, visit www.orderalhambra.org or www.facebook.com/garcia230.

Musical director pleased with annual “Cantata” at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church By Ron Giofu

The sanctuary at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was alive with the sounds of festive music Dec. 12. The church presented its annual Christmas Cantata that Thursday night, with musical director Matt Kulbacki stating it was his sixth with the church choir but adding it has dated farther back than that. The choir performed an hour-long concert, a.k.a. a “cantata,” with eight songs as part of the event including a solo performance by

Penny-Anne Beaudoin. Counting Kulbacki, there were 17 people performing as part of the cantata, which was entitled “Christmas Presence.” “We started (rehearsing) in September,” said Kulbacki, adding he was very pleased with their performance. Rehearsals are once per week including music for the regular services plus pieces for the cantata, with the rehearsals lasting about 90 minutes per week. He added he sends the choir members home with CD’s and parts he would like

them to rehearse and the members put extra time in at their homes as well. Much of the pieces were chosen by Kulbacki and he was influenced by one of his favourite composers, Pepper Choplin. Kulbacki said he will send word of the choir’s excellent performance and believes Choplin will be pleased. “We do this (cantata) once per year. It’s one of the biggest things we do in a year. This year, it went really, really well. I could not be happier at this moment,” he said following the performance.

Top, The choir at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church perform their annual Christmas cantata Dec. 12. The performance featured many holiday-themed songs and lasted about one hour.

Right, Penny-Anne Beaudoin, a member of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church choir, performs a solo. Beaudoin and the rest of the choir, led by musical director Matt Kulbacki, performed in the annual Christmas cantata the evening of Dec. 12.

Bulldogs hang in there, but lose twice on basketball court By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Bulldogs are coming close but still looking for their first win in WECSSAA Tier 2 senior boys basketball action. The Bulldogs were in action twice last week, but lost both to drop to 0-3 on the regular season. Their second game was a frustrating one for General Amherst as they came close but fell in overtime 44-38 to the visiting Cardinal Carter Cougars last Wednesday night. In what was the first home game of the year for the Bulldogs, they led 19-17 after the first half but a bad second quarter in which they were outscored 17-5 left General Amherst trailing 34-24 heading into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was General Amherst’s turn to dominate their opponents, as the Bulldogs outscored Cardinal Carter 14-4 to force overtime tied at 38. The Bulldogs had possession of the basketball in the dying seconds but a turnover snuffed out an opportunity for a game-winning shot in regulation time. However, the Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 5-0 in overtime and left Amherstburg with the victory. “The effort was there,” said General

Amherst head coach Frank Palumbo. “The execution wasn’t.” Palumbo was pleased the Bulldogs battled back to force overtime but was disappointed they weren’t able to win it in regulation. “We had the ball at the end of the game which is what you want,” he said. “We just didn’t finish. Fundamentals is something we have to work on.” The team plays hard and Palumbo is hopeful they can break through soon and start picking up some wins. “We play with every team,” he said. “We’re capable of beating every team.” However, Palumbo added: “You can only say that so much. We have to execute.” The Bulldogs were in Essex last Tuesday and lost to the Red Raiders. Palumbo said they got down early by ten points and couldn’t make it up. “We battled but lost 46-36,” he said. “We battled. We fought through it but we couldn’t perservere.” The senior boys are staying positive, he said. “I feel bad for the boys. You want to see them experience wins,” said Palumbo. General Amherst is now off for the Christmas break with their next game

Sr. Lady Gens improve to 4-0 heading into the Christmas break By Ron Giofu

The General Amherst Lady Gens are still perfect heading into the Christmas break. The Lady Gens senior girls volleyball team was in action last Tuesday night in Tecumseh to battle the St. Anne Saints. They returned to Amherstburg after obtaining at 25-5, 25-14 and 25-14 victory. In addition to winning all four of their matches early in the season, the senior Lady Gens have not lost a set during their first four matches of the 2019-20 WECSSAA Tier 1 volleyball season. “It wasn’t a very good match,” said Lady Gens head

coach Jeff Miller. “It wasn’t much of a competition.” Miller stated “we got some free ball practice” and were able to work on other aspects of their game, “We’re just happy we ended the (calendar) year on a decent note,” he said. All four of their early season matches have been against “AAA”-sized schools with the Lady Gens now set to face “AA”-sized schools, which is what General Amherst is classified as based on its student population. Miller said those are the teams they will be facing in the playoffs and expects to have tough matches with some of them. With there not being a lot of turnover from last year’s

team to this year’s group, Miller said “we’re in a good position.” He said they will use practice to work on their skills and the matches to keep playing together and to play with each other. The Lady Gens have a small roster means they will have a chance to get additional time on the floor working together and getting used to their positions as they don’t have the luxury of being able to substitute in a lot of other players. The Lady Gens’ next two matches are on the road as they will be at Tecumseh Vista Academy Jan. 7 for a 4 p.m. scheduled start. They are at Kennedy Jan. 14 at 5:20 p.m. and don’t return home until a Jan. 16 match versus Lajeunesse at 4 p.m.

Bulldogs boys hockey team enters Christmas break with a victory By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Bulldogs entered the Christmas break with a win after a recent victory over L’Essor. The Bulldogs picked up their second victory of the WECSSAA Tier 1 boys hockey season by defeating L’Essor 5-1. Aiden Bastien led the scoring attack with two goals while Tylor Fraser, Sebastien Tronchin and Brandon Salvati. General Amherst head coach Pat

Garrett said they played well and was happy with their performance. “Our goaltending was phenomenal,” said Garrett, praising Josh Courtney’s performance. Garrett added they lost three games this year by close scores and they got the bounces their way in their most recent game against L’Essor. The Bulldogs avenged an earlier 4-2 loss to the Aigles in the first game of the season. The Bulldogs (2-3) played the 2019 portion of their WECSSAA

schedule on the road and when the 2020 portion of the season begins, they will have all of their remaining games at the Libro Centre. The first of their four remaining regular season games will be Jan. 9 at 2:30 p.m. versus the Brennan Cardinals. All of the remaining regular season games are scheduled for 3 p.m. with the Essex Red Raiders coming to Amherstburg Jan. 14, followed by L’Essor (Feb. 6) and Belle River (Feb. 11).

Community meal presented by Amherstburg Community Church By Jonathan Martin

Amherstburg Community Church hosted a dinner for its congregation last Wednesday evening. Around 250 people crowded into the church’s hall, all of whom participate in the organization’s weekly “family night.” Family night is a weekly program that runs throughout the school year focused on faith and fellowship, according to youth coordinator Joshua Maedel. “It’s all about reaching out and connecting people,” Maedel said. “We want to show the community that we really care about them.” As a display of that caring, Maedel handed out frozen turkeys to each of the attendees toward the end of the night. The event boasted a full itinerary. Everything from song and dance to a slideshow and raffle. Maedel said getting all the moving parts to work wasn’t easy. “There was a lot going on behind the scenes,” he said. “This is the second year we’ve done this, but we changed some things and rearranged others. It was nice knowing what the end goal would look like, but getting there was a challenge.”

Young members of the Amherstburg Community Church perform a pre-dinner sing-along at the Alma St.-based church last Wednesday night. Around 250 people were served that night. Still, the attendees seemed to enjoy themselves. Before filling up with dinner food and homemade baked goods, the crowd participated in a sing-along hosted by family night’s younger attendees. The

Festive fun found at mission’s annual “Tambola” fundraiser Inez Fox laughs as she draws a Tambola number at the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission recently. The Mission has been hosting an annual Tambola game night for 17 years.

By Jonathan Martin People and presents filled the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission earlier this month for its 17th annual game of Tambola. Attendees had the chance to win more than 200 gift baskets, which were put together by volunteers over the past year. The volunteers drew numbers for each basket and the patron who had purchased a ticket with the corresponding number got to take home their prize. Inez Fox, who has volunteered with the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission for each of the charity’s 17 Tambola games, said that putting on the event is a lot of work but finds it’s worth the effort. The event “has definitely grown over the years,” Fox pointed out. “We closed down (the Mission) for two days to set all this up.” Last year, the Mission’s Tambola night raised around $800. Fox said she hopes that this year will raise even more. No official numbers were available at time of writing. Fox and her fellow volunteers lined the hundreds of prizes along tables set up in the Mission’s main space and around the perimeter of the room. Everything from card games to home décor were up for grabs. Fred Gilbert walked away with several of the event’s

gift baskets. “We got lucky,” he laughed. “My wife and I come (to this event) every year. I live here in Amherstburg and I love to support the mission to help people.” Gilbert said he and his wife have look forward to attending the event again next year, too. “The main objective is to help people,” he added. “We’re going to donate everything we won tonight to those in need.” The Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission is thanking everyone for the success of the 17th annual Tambola. “It was a fun-filled night,” said McAllister. “The support of the entire community was much appreciated.” Winners of the Dec. 7, 2019 Tambola ticket raffle winners were as follows: #1 – Rose Hurst, $250 cash (Ticket #1688) #2 – Gail Rust, No Frills $75 gift card (Ticket #1397) #3 – Bob Friars, Sobeys $75 gift card (Ticket #0833) #4 – Debbie Scott, Walmart $75 gift card (Ticket #1919) #5 – L. Hardy, Canadian Tire $50 gift card (Ticket #1235) #6 – Jo-Ann Purdy, Tim Hortons $50 gift card (Ticket #1500)

church erupted in a chorus of collective song. “It’s all about celebrating together as a family,” Maedel said.

Santa and Mrs. Claus took time out of their busy schedules to watch the movie “Elf” in the indoor soccer facility at the Libro Centre last Sunday afternoon. The indoor movie was sponsored by the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce. wasn't enormous, the hope was that those in attendance still created their own holiday memories. “(The ACOC) decided to do it a few months ago,” stated past president Carolyn Davies. “We thought it would be a good way for the Chamber to give back to the community.” Davies said the ACOC wanted to share the Christmas and holiday spirit with the town. “We thought it was a good way of sharing the joy of community,” she said. Children and their parents got a chance to watch a movie together, be with friends and create some Christmas memories, she added. “We plan on doing a number of community events in the future,” Davies said. The Christmas movie is likely

to become an annual tradition, she continued, and noted that as Amherstburg grows, the ACOC wants not only to foster commerce but to create a sense of community from within the residents as well. That was done Sunday by watching the same movie together. Davies said there were a lot of things going on within the region so she was pleased with the attendance, believing it was “pretty darn good” since it was a busy Sunday afternoon.
