TRUE Festival presented in downtown Amherstburg By Jonathan Martin mherstburg’s first T E estival met with heavy winds and temperatures that dropped below freezing last Saturday, which resulted in a less-than-fabulous turnout. erhaps a couple hundred people shivered their way downtown over the course of the festival to partake in the event’s axe-throwing, whiskey tasting, maple butter sampling and dance partying. Toward the end of the night, when drag ueens isco esus and Koko Starr stepped out onto a pop-up stage, a crowd of 50 or so people bunched together to watch the performance despite a healthy sprinkling of snow. Sarah an Grinsven helped put the event together alongside her colleagues at the tourism o ce. s her son launched an axe toward a wooden target under the guidance of Windsor-based Bad xe Throwing, she braved the frigid temperature in a very 0s-looking fur coat and voluminous wig. “This festival is all about embracing peace, love and Canadiana,” she said. “Embrace the cold ” an Grinsven said that she knew T E estival’s attendance would likely be “very weather-based.” “ esterday was the coldest day of the year,” she said. “If you weren’t already signed up to partake in

Businesses along alhousie Street extended their business hours, she said, in order to accommodate the expected throngs of visitors. Brian owkes co-owns Lot 10 Brewing Company, a bar which sat right in the middle of the festival grounds. “There are definitely a lot of new faces tonight,” he said. Groups of people, still bundled in their hats and scarves, nearly filled his space. Throughout the night, it seemed that the bulk of those patronizing the downtown core could be found indoors.

“We heard there was a new Pride festival in Amherstburg,” Artale said. “Walter and I thought we should check it out and support it. I’m glad we did. This is a nice town. Like anything, I’m sure (the festival) will grow over time.” Van Grinsven said she hopes Amhertburg’s TRUE Festival will grow, too, both in scope and in patronage. This year, she said, served as a “pilot project.” In its first year, the event cost ust over $31,000 to execute. an Grinsven said the money came from a $250,000 grant the Town of mherstburg received from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. The cash also funded the town’s River Lights festival. The details surrounding next year’s T E estival, if one is held, are still very much in the air – not unlike the snow that sprinkled this year’s celebration.

Richer said they are looking to increase capacity of their rooms, try to create a better experience for the children staying there and to also better support parents who have children in hospital. Richer said they house many families from the Windsor-Essex County area, including many from Amherstburg, with the longest stay at the Windsor location being 102 nights. There are five bedroom suites with a capacity of two to four people and two shortterm rooms. The Fight Like Mason Foundation was started in memory of Mason Bacon-Macri, who died of childhood cancer at the age of four. His parents Iain Macri and Chantelle Bacon have kept his memory alive through the foundation and also have used it as a way to assist other children suffering from cancer. “We’re completely honoured to once again be a beneficiary for the third year in a row,” said Macri. “It seems like yesterday that (Lauren, Kierstyn, Ty and family) came to us to meet for the very first time to learn about our charity. Bacon added they are impressed with the work being done by the “amazing” Baillargeon children. “It’s awesome,” she said. “A lot of our success has come from these three kids,” added Macri. Proceeds will help the Fight Like Mason Foundation with its new program, which sees children photographed and their stories shared about what they want to be when they get older. “We ask them what they aspire to beyond their diagnosis,” said Macri. Lauren added that Kids Curing Cancer started in 2014 when she wanted to raise $50 to help her grandfather Dan Gerard. Thanks to outreach on social media, she ended up raising $3,850. Her grandfather has since passed away but Lauren and her siblings have kept going and the culmative total over the first six years topped $53,000. The first few years saw money donated to the Canadian Cancer Society’s patient assistance fund and they have spread it around since them. Over the years, they have also raised money through concerts and CD sales as well in order to raise money. The total from Saturday night’s event was $ $10,070, however the /person final total for the year is $ /senior not yet finalized when combined with the other events KCC puts on. Education strikes staged last week, continue again this week By Ron Giofu Barring a settlement with the Province of Ontario, there will be no school for anybody this Friday. It has been announced that on Feb. 21, elementary and secondary teachers and education workers represented by the four major education unions in Ontario “will stand up to the Ford government’s education cuts” by participating in a one-day walkout across the province. Members of the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO), the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) will all strike this Friday, with the announcement coming late last week.. According to a press release issued jointly by the four major unions representing teachers and educational support workers, this is the first time since the political protest of 1997 that teachers and education workers from ntario’s main education a liates will all be out of their classrooms on the same day. “Nearly 200,000 teachers and education workers will strike across 2 school boards, affecting nearly 5,000 schools across the province in protest of the government funding cuts to education,” the press release states. “It is clear to all four Ontario education unions and our members that the Ford government and Education Minister (Stephen) Lecce care nothing about students or educators and everything about taking money out of the publicly funded education system,” says AEFO President Rémi Sabourin. “To achieve their cuts, they have knowingly thrown students, families, educators and the system into chaos.” “We are already seeing the effects of this government’s reckless education cuts,” says OECTA President Liz Stuart. “The Ford government is reducing supports for students with special education needs and mental health issues. It is squeezing students into overcrowded classes and forcing high school students to take elearning courses. If we allow the government to implement its plan fully, thousands of teaching positions and tens of thousands of course options will be lost.” “Educators in every school board will not stay silent as the Ford government proceeds to decimate our publicly funded education system,” says ETFO President Sam Hammond. “Our unions and members helped build Ontario’s world-class education system. By not seriously addressing the issues critical to students and student learning, the Ford government has made a sham of contract talks over the last seven months.” “It is now evident that the Ford government’s agenda is entirely ideological and not at all concerned with providing quality education,” says OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof. “They are pulling resources out of the public education system and, with schemes

We are heartened that so many parents are standing with us against the dismantling of Ontario’s public education system.” In response, Lecce issued the following statement: “Our focus is on keeping students in class, as they deserve better. That is why I am calling on the teachers’ union leaders to accept private mediation today and end this needless escalation. Parents are losing patience with the disruption in their lives, the inconsistency in their children’s education, and the financial impact of scrambling for childcare. That is why we have offered financial assistance through the Support for arents initiative, which has seen an immense uptake of more than 5 5,000 applications. While union leaders are organizing further disruption, our government remains focused on getting deals at the bargaining table through private mediation. We’ve made very significant moves on our position, but union leadership hasn’t moved on substantial items - like their already generous benefits packages and maintaining hiring based on seniority rather than on merit. Parents and students deserve no less.” Teachers and educational support workers represented by the EFTO were on the picket lines last

Little progress was reported those days and that was echoed the following day outside of General Amherst when OSSTF members held another one-day strike. That also closed public elementary schools. Keith Gale, union representative at General Amherst, said there was little news to report since the last walkout by teachers and support workers but “we’ve still got high morale.” Gale noted Premier Doug Ford has become frustrated with the unions but “we’re frustrated with him and our education minister.” He added they would rather be teaching but they are “standing up for what is right.”

Local tech start-up brings on-demand delivery service to Amherstburg By Ron Giofu A student-led tech start-up is bringing its online, on-demand delivery service to Amherstburg. The service, known as Deliverbae, has expanded into Amherstburg with University of Windsor students Miraj Hossain and Mehedi Hassan starting it in Windsor two years ago. They have now teamed with fellow university student Linden Crain, with the latter helping to expand the on-demand delivery service into Amherstburg. A soft launch of the service in Amherstburg was earlier this month. “We specialize in getting anything to your door on-demand,” said Hossain. The service is online at www.deliverbae.com or through a smart phone app developed by Hassan that is free to download through Apple IOS and Google Play stores. They describe their prices as comparable to well-known food delivery services, with those prices being $3. within a five-kilometre radius of where it is being delivered from. Prices increase 80 cents per kilometre after that. “There was a market gap, I noticed,” said Hossain. While food could be delivered, the founders of Deliverbae wanted a way to deliver “anything you want.” That includes anything from lip balm to shovels. The mherstburg community did not currently offer an on-demand delivery service and Crain said they have partnered with local businesses including Bulls Eye Pizza and Happier Camper, with more businesses being sought. With over 160 driver applications submitted to Deliverbae, they say they are “more than prepared to help service residents in the Amherstburg community.” A sample of Windsor-based businesses Deliverbae has partnered with include Oven 360, Schwabs & Primo’s Finest in Meat and Sausage, BB Branded, Alpha X Nutrition, The 281 Dalhousie St. Amherstburg Hoagie Market among others. Deliverbae is going to be providing a large number of businesses in Amherstburg with the opportunity to introduce delivery at their stores. st Hossain said this will ultimately drive up tra c in the economy and properson vide businesses with the

The drivers would work on a contract basis and would be able to have exibility as to when they would deliver. Deliverbae also touts the fact that customers can order from wherever they like and customize their orders. If a business is not partnered with Deliverbae, drivers would still purchase the client’s order from there and are still able to deliver it. While they can’t offer delivery of alcohol products at the present time, they hope to be able to do so in the near future. “I think this is going to be big for Amherstburg,” said Crain. or those without online access, people can still call 1- - 5 - 223 to find out more or to access the service. Town looking to bring “Honeywell lands” to province’s attention By Ron Giofu Lands owned by Amherstburg Land Holdings are among the properties the town is submitting to the province under a new program to entice large manufacturing companies. The lands, simply dubbed the “Honeywell lands” during the most recent meeting of Amherstburg town council, will be among the submissions to the Ontario government under the Job Site Challenge. The Job Site Challenge is seeking suitable sites for manufacturing with the town wanting the province to reconsider the redevelopment of a brownfield site rather than a greenfield site. While land parcels 500 acres or more are the focus, Councillor Michael Prue noted the Honeywell lands could have parcels combined to make up the 500acre requirement set forth by the provincial government. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo noted there are actually seven parcels that are open to be sold, with Prue suggesting that lands across Thomas Road could also be utilized to bring the submission up to 500 acres. Prue, a member of the town’s economic development advisory committee, said if the land is chosen by the Ontario government this could lead to “development we desperately need and jobs.” The site has a deep water port, railway access, parking and a permit to take water from the Detroit River, said Prue, with DiCarlo adding there is also an energy conversion plant there as well. “I don’t know what else a developer of industrial lands would want,” said Prue. “This could bring thousands and thousands of jobs to Amherstburg.” The town is working with the Windsor-Essex Eco-

ing in North America. At present, a new highway has been completed and international crossing will be under construction which will be owned and managed through the federal government. This transportation system offers immediate access throughout North American highways,” manager of planning services Frank Garardo stated in his report to town council.

The lands in and around the former Honeywell plant are being planned to submit to the province under the Job Site Challenge program. The Ontario government-led program is seeking lands 500 acres or more that could be redeveloped as manufacturing sites. (Town of Amherstburg image) nomic Development Corporation (WEEDC) on the matter, but CAO John Miceli said there are also local sites in Tecumseh and Windsor being considered by WEEDC. “I know other municipalities in the region also have locations they would like to have considered but it doesn’t preclude us though as a municipality from making our own submission if we are not the one selected to move forward,” the CAO told the media after the meeting. A glass plant had been reportedly interested in those lands, but it appears the town is no longer in the running for it. The Honeywell site is one of the premier sites in the province, Miceli added, due to the amenities on the site. Multiple properties in the area of Howard Ave. and North Townline (County Road 8) are also under consideration for submission under the Job Site Challenge program. “The Town is strategically located 20 minutes and only 25 kilometres from Windsor etroit, offers many amenities for industrial investment, unique to the region and North America. The Town of Amherstburg is located in close proximity to the Ambassador Bridge, which is considered the apex of North America’s most integrated transportation network. Are you missing out on these tax benefit payments? (NC) Filing your taxes isn’t fun, but the upside is it’s the only way to receive benefits and credits that can help you pay for things like groceries, your kids’ activities or even a dream vacation. ou only need to apply for benefits and credits once, but you do need to do your taxes on time every year to continue getting your payments without interruption. You also need to keep your personal information — like your address and marital status — up to date. Make sure to keep all the information you needed to do your taxes for at least six years, in case the CRA asks for it. Here are some tips to help make sure you’re getting the benefits and credits you’re entitled to: 1. D o your taxes. Even if you don’t have any income to report for 2019 or your income is tax exempt, you can still claim helpful tax credits and get benefit payments. ou ust have to do your taxes by April 30, 2020. 2. If you have children under 18 in your care, you could get Canada child benefit payments every month. ou need to apply (if you haven’t already); then, make sure you do your taxes on time every year so you can continue to receive it without interruption. Financial well-being depends more on behaviour than on income

3 things you need to know for RRSP season (NC) A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is one of today’s most commonly used savings vehicles, in large part because contributions are tax-deductible and the product is designed specifically for retirement. You’ll have until March 2, 2020 to contribute to your RRSP and claim the amount on your 2019 tax return. Any contributions made after this deadline will count towards the 2020 tax year. RRSP season is a great opportunity to review your finances and decide if you want to make any adjustments or set up automatic contributions for the upcoming year. With the 2019 deadline fast approaching, here are some tips from: New year, new rules: Every year, there are new

contribution limits, deadlines and other changes. For example, in 2020, firsttime homebuyers can now withdraw up to $35,000 (or $70,000 per couple) from an RRSP to finance a down payment on a home, subject to eligibility and conditions. This withdrawal is tax-free but must be repaid into the RRSP within 15 years. Before taking out any money, speak to an advisor or financial planner to see if this program is appropriate for you. Contribute carefully: Understanding how much to contribute can be confusing. In 2019, each Canadian has a personal RRSP contribution limit of up to 18 per cent of their earned income, up to a maximum of $26,500 plus any unused contribution room from past years. However, those belonging and contributing to an em-

ployer’s pension plan may have reduced limits for their RRSP. It’s important to keep track of all your contributions to ensure you stay within your annual limit. Withdraw wisely: RRSPs are typically set up to support long-term savings and retirement. Since RRSPs are designed for long-term saving, withdrawals are subject to tax. However, under the Home Buyers’ Plan, first-time homebuyers can withdraw up to $35,000 (or $70,000 for a couple) to finance a down payment, subject to eligibility and conditions. The withdrawal is taxfree but must be paid back into your RRSP within 15 years. Speak with an advisor or financial planner before withdrawing any funds to ensure you understand the implications.

(NC) The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recently released a report entitled Findings from Canada’s Financial Well-being Survey, which indicates that our financial well-being depends more on good money management than on income. This is striking because many of us believe that higher incomes guarantee better financial well-being. But this is not the case. Income is important, but behaviour is even more so. For example, the study shows that Canadians who regularly save money have a higher level of financial well-being than those with similar incomes who do not contribute to their savings. It also showed that those who avoid borrowing to cover daily expenses have a higher level of financial well-being than those who borrow regularly, regardless of income. It is encouraging to realize that, even if you cannot increase your income or change your employment status, you can definitely improve your financial wellbeing by changing behaviours to adopt sound management of your personal finances. Here are some examples of simple steps you can take to achieve or improve your

financial well-being: Make a budget. A budget allows you to estimate your monthly income and expenses. This can help you determine needs, prioritize purchases and commit to a realistic spending plan. Set up an emergency fund. Save regularly and set up an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. In doing this, set a goal to cover a minimum of three to six months of living expenses. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your savings can grow through such small acts as: starting with – and

saving – a realistic amount each week, eliminating non-essential spending, automating your savings and increasing your weekly savings if you can. Avoid borrowing to pay for everyday expenses. Living within your means is not always easy, but it is the best way to avoid excessive debt. Borrowing more money puts you at risk of no longer being able to manage your debt. You might hit your credit card limit or have trouble making bigger payments if your mortgage interest rates rise.

Skate Amherstburg hosts Deveau/ Winfield SynchroSkate 2020 event By Jonathan Martin orty-five synchronized skating teams from across ntario slid into the Libro Centre last Saturday to participate in the eveau Winfield SynchroSkate 2020 invitational competition. The skaters took to the ice to perform before a panel of udges, who visited from Toronto to deliver each team a numerical score based on a variety of criteria. The teams with the highest scores within their respective divisions received medals presented by one of the competition’s namesakes, Bert Winfield. Lynn ox is the president of Skate mherstburg, the organization that won the bid to host the event. fter buzzing about all day trying to make the event run smoothly, she got to slow down a little while Winfield handed out the awards. “Everyone seemed to perform very well out there,” she said. “There were a lot of smiling faces.” otably absent from the ice was elementary team Glencoe usion,

which dropped out the day before the competition when one of its skaters broke their ankle. “ ther than that, everything went smoothly and there were no in uries,” ox said. Winfield was pleased with the results, too, he said. s he handed out the awards, he congratulated the skaters. “I en oy it the skaters) en oy it,” he said of the event. “We try to make it as en oyable as possible.” Winfield has been in-

volved with skating since 1 5 . e said that over the decades, the sport has become “more serious,” but that there are still sparks of oy within it. e finds the younger skaters especially inspirational, he said, since it’s still ust a game for them. The eveau Winfield SynchroSkate 2020 invitational competition did have some serious awards to hand out, though.

General Amherst’s Sam Connell (4) gets a scoring chance during her team’s 5-2 win over Holy Names last Wednesday afternoon at the Capri Pizza Recreation Complex in Windsor.

www.rivertowntimes.com McCurdy also thought the girls played well, noting they played hard against oly ames. She said they skated and moved their feet constantly and that led to a lot of good scoring chances. The Lady Gens feel good heading into the playoffs, McCurdy added. “We want to win it all,” she said. General mherst head coach an ettypiece said they played against a talented oly ames team that was forced to put a forward in net ust to keep the team going. “ oly ames has some really strong players,” he said, adding the player filling in at goalie “stands in there for her team.” ettypiece was happy with how the Lady Gens played, adding “I told the kids before the game if we get one point in this game, we’ll get home ice advantage” in the first game of the playoffs. oly ames has the ability to mount comebacks when they get down, ettypiece added, but General mherst was able to fight them off. e added starting goalie aiden Stiles played well, making key saves at various points during the hockey game. “The idea is you have to work hard for three periods,” he said. “We were able to score goals at important times of the game.” The Lady Gens had a full bench against oly ames for one of the few times this season, as only goalie Kayla enaud missed the game due to illness. The Lady Gens have been battling illness or in ury for most of the regular season.

Lady Gens win regular season Skate Amherstburg hosts event finale at Holy Names (Continued from Page 13)

By Ron Giofu The General mherst Lady Gens girls hockey team finished the WECSS “ AA” regular season on a high note last week. The Lady Gens used two goals each from Cassidy tkinson and Mikalah Wilcox and a shorthanded goal from Kira McCurdy to knock off the oly ames Knights last Wednesday afternoon at the Capri izza ecreation Complex in south Windsor. The win gave the Lady Gens a record of -1-3 on the season, good for 11 points and second place in the division. “We played really hard and had a whole bunch of chances and it showed on the scoreboard,” said tkinson. The Lady Gens skated hard, tkinson added, and used McCurdy’s goal as an example as she managed to burst into the oly ames zone while General mherst was shorthanded and bury a loose puck. tkinson’s two goals were the first two goals of the game and gave them some early confidence in the first period. tkinson added the win gives the team confidence heading into this week’s playoff action, which will likely be a home game against the Tecumseh Vista Academy Vortex. The Vortex was the team that handed the Lady Gens their only regular season loss back on eb. 3 at the Libro Centre.

Bulldogs coach disappointed again after 7-1 loss on home ice By Ron Giofu

Lady Gens advance in WECSSAA “AA” playoffs with QF win over Tecumseh Vista Academy By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens have moved one step closer to their goal. The Lady Gens opened the WECSSAA “AA” playoffs last Tuesday night against the Tecumseh ista cademy ortex and swept passed them by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21 to advance. General Amherst struggled against Tecumseh ista cademy in the regular season but the coaches were happy with what they saw after the playoff match. “It was a ten-times better game,” said Lady Gens head coach eff Miller. “We played a lot better than we played the last time.” ssistant coach Mary Ewer was also pleased with the game, noting “their whole mindset” has changed from what it was a few weeks ago. She said they communicated well together and had a strong outing. “They are playing as a team,” said Ewer “ ou can ust see everyone come together.” The Lady Gens didn’t get rattled by adversity, she added, pointing out they were trailing in the second set before they went on a -0 run to take the lead and win the set. Both Miller and Ewer stated the Lady Gens are gelling together better as a team and are focused on the task at hand. Their goal this season is to win WECSSAA and SWOSSAA at the “AA” level and return to S . Miller said facing Tecumseh ista cademy in the WECSS “ ” uarterfinals was likely the toughest matchup they could have and they benefitted from it as he believed it was better than having an easy matchup. The Lady Gens hosted Kingsville in the semi-finals Tuesday afternoon at p.m., after this issue of the iver Town Times went to press. The General mherst unior girls volleyball team played last Tuesday night as well in their WECSS “ ” uarterfinals. The unior Lady Gens hosted the Catholic Central Comets and came away with a convincing 25-1 , 25-11 and 25- victory. The uniors also hosted semi-final action Tuesday night, with their 5 30 p.m. match being against the erman Green Gri ns. Should both the senior and unior girls volleyball teams advanced to the finals, the seniors will play at St. Clair College Thursday at 5 5 p.m. while the uniors will play at 30 p.m., also at St. Clair College.

Brandon Salvati (16) gets a scoring chance against Belle River last week at the Libro Centre. The Bulldogs lost their final regular season game 7-1 to the Nobles. elimination playoff tournament. Should they advance past the Red Raiders, the Bulldogs would have to face the talented obles team in the first game of the tournament. That is not the position the Bulldogs were hoping to find themselves in come playoff time. “It’s our position but we put ourselves here,” said Garrett. “We’ll deal with it.” aving to face Belle iver first in the tournament will be a tough task if they don’t want to encounter a loss right out of the gate in the tournament, as Garrett said losing that game means they can’t

afford to lose another in the tournament. “It’s pretty tough to start against them in a double-elimination tournament,” he said. “Maybe we can catch lightning in a bottle and beat these guys.” There will be at least one week between the loss to Belle iver and the playoff game with Essex and Garrett believes that it will do the Bulldogs some good. e wants to make the players feel good about themselves and want to come to the rink and that time away from game action could prove beneficial.

General Amherst’s Emma Macvoy digs out a ball during last Tuesday’s WECSSAA “AA” senior girls volleyball semi-final match against Tecumseh Vista Academy. The Lady Gens won in three sets.

The General Amherst Bulldogs are not entering the WECSSAA “AA” playoffs in the fashion they wanted. The Bulldogs finished the 201 -20 WECSS regular season with a -5 record after losing -1 to the visiting first-place Belle iver obles last Tuesday afternoon at the Libro Centre. The obles built a -0 advantage after two periods en route to the victory. Carter rieur scored the only goal for General Amherst in the third period. “Terrible, ust terrible,” said Bulldogs head coach Pat Garrett after the game. “What a terrible time to go into a slump) like we have.” Garrett believed the players are worrying about too many things on the ice, including things they cannot control. e added that, unlike before the exam break, they can’t get the offense going. The Bulldogs have been outscored 12-1 in the two games after returning from the exam break. “We’re not playing well. We can’t get the offense going,” said Garrett. “We couldn’t do anything wrong prior to the exam break) and now we can’t do anything right.” The Bulldogs will now likely have to host Essex in a one-game elimination playoff matchup this week before entering the two-day, double-
