Local man and family participating in “In Our Father’s Footsteps” pilgrimage By Ron Giofu An Amherstburg man and two of his children are retracing his father’s footsteps during World War II. Edward Parsons served with the 2nd Canadian Corps in the 6th Light AntiAircraft Division and helped guard the Nijmegen bridge during the liberation of Holland. In the 75th anniversary of that anniversary, his son Brent, granddaughter Sarah of Leamington and grandson Jeremy of Hamilton will be part of the “In Our Father’s Footsteps” trip that is planned for April 29-May 11. The trip is described by the official website www.inourfathersfootsteps. com as “a not-for-profit, Caminoinspired pilgrimage for the Canadian descendants of WWII veterans of the Liberation of The Netherlands.” They will be walking 20 kilometres a day for three straight days with a free day also allowing the Parsons family to do their own exploring, which will include visiting cemeteries and museums. “I’ve been out walking every day to build up my stamina,” said Brent. “The Dutch are really thankful to Canadians.

Heritage Square Plaza

We’ll be celebrating with the Dutch and it should be an amazing experience.” The Parsons family will be among the 200 or so people from across Canada going on the trip. Brent said Jeremy presented the option when the family was in Amherstburg for Christmas. “It will be a great bonding time for us,” said Brent. “I’m excited. It really honours my dad and helps me understand what he went through and where he was.” Brent said he was in Holland ten years ago but this will be the first time there for Jeremy and Sarah. He said his dad, who died in 2002, didn’t talk much about his war experiences but recalled a story of the power of their gun once knocking him out of a tree after it had been fired. Brent said the gun Edward was stationed with was similar to the one currently outside of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157. “He was very quiet about it,” said Brent, of his father’s war experiences. His mother Monica, a.k.a. “Pam,” was a war bride who Edward met while on leave in England. They married and returned to Canada, settling in Smiths Falls, Ontario though some members of the family found their way south. Some

Province grants the OK for new child care facility at Stella Maris By Ron Giofu

A new childcare facility is one step closer to coming to Amherstburg. The Ontario government announced Friday morning that it has given the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) approval to tender a childcare addition to Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School. The $2.1M investment will “add a new, quality learning environment for the students of Amherstburg. This project is part of the province’s capital investment program to build more childcare spaces for Ontario’s families,” according to a news release issued Friday. Stephen Fields, communications co-ordinator with the WECDSB, said there are no definitive timetables as for when shovels could go in the ground or when it could be open, noting it is still at the tendering stage right now. It will be a new build as opposed to renovating existing classrooms and he added the board still has to not only find a contractor, but also work with the Town of Amherstburg to finalize everything. The new addition will consist of 73 childcare spaces and four new childcare

rooms. “The funding for this childcare addition to Stella Maris Catholic School is a fantastic development,” said Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls. “This investment will provide flexibility for families and opportunity for the children of Amherstburg.” “From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” added Minister of Education Stephen Lecce. “Our financing of the childcare addition to Stella Maris Separate School further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and childcares, as well as our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.” Melissa Farrand, who oversees the WECDSB’s childcare services, was also pleased with the announcement. “This centre will provide a wonderful new level of convenience for our Stella Maris families,” she said. “It will include an infant room, a toddler room and two pre-school rooms, which will help make for a seamless transition for students

I’m really looking forward to seeing this project get started.” Creative Child Learning Centre will be the new operator and will move into the new addition once it’s complete. The company was the successful bidder as the result of request for proposal process that occurred in 2018. Michelle DiCarlo, executive director of Creative Child, said she’s delighted to be moving into the new location.

“We’ve already been providing a Before and After program at Stella Maris and it’s a wonderful neighbourhood community school,” she said. “We have a proven track record of providing quality childcare and look forward to expanding our services for even more families at Stella Maris.” DiCarlo added “our families are very excited” and they are happy to put families on a waiting list for when the Stella Maris addition becomes available. “It’s going to be amazing,” she said of the new build. “The families of Amherstburg will love it when they see it completed.” Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School is located at 140 Girard St. in Amherstburg.

Amherstburg Community Church (ACC) launched the 2020 version of “Family Night” last Wednesday. The church had 133 people, including 45 volunteers, on hand. By RTT Staff A local church has relaunched its children’s programming and “Family Night” programs, something it says has proven popular since its debut last September. The 2020 launch was held last Wednesday night at Amherstburg Community Church (ACC) with 133 people there to help relaunch the program, which started in Sept. 2019. Kerrington Sweeney, children’s pastor at ACC, said there were games and activities for children and youth and it allowed children to get to meet one another and chat with leaders. There were over 45 volunteers helping that night as well, she noted. Youth pastor Joshua Maedel also said there were “lots of games and a focus on building relationships.” He added they help guide people spiritually and allow youth to ask questions and get answers. Sweeney looks after the “Amherstburg Kids Club,” which is infant to Grade 5 while Maedel runs the “ACC Students” club, which is from Grade 6-12. There is also a parent café for parents to connect and get to know each other as well. “We want to offer a safe environment for children and teens to explore questions of life and faith,” added

Refuse to accept self-checkouts, save local jobs I went on a shopping trip this week and was totally disgusted that only two registers were open with long lines at each and management expecting us to use their newly installed self-checkouts. This store was heralded as a savior for our towns residents after plant closings put many on the unemployment line, is now also divesting itself of employees by replacing cashiers with customers who are willing to check and bag their own purchases. Thankfully there were few takers willing to work for free, and instead opted to wait their turns at the two available human checkouts. I finally approached the one lone employee aiding the few customers at the six self-checkout registers and asked another register be open. Low and behold, another cashier was found. Last time this happened, I had the good fortune of speaking to who I assumed was the store manager. Ironically, he was acting cashier at the time. He

blamed lack of cashiers on the fact that he had few people willing to work. I recommended offering more full-time hours at livable wages as being a way to entice and retain loyal employees. I’m sure he too would look elsewhere, if he had to survive on 12-16 hours per week at minimum wage. And please, let’s not buy into the tired argument of self-checkouts help keep prices low. I’m willing to pay a few cents more for my toilet paper if it means retaining jobs. Self-checkouts only help increase profits for the already greedy rich. I commend those who refuse to accept job killing self-checkouts. I also urge more to speak out. The job you may save, could be your neighbours. — Frank Klein Amherstburg

Resident gives her views on policing issue, based on the mayor’s comments Re: Mayor looks back on 2019, looks ahead to 2020

Mayor DiCarlo is quoted as saying, “For me, it’s all about results,” and he noted there was an increase in service levels. I was expecting statistics but when I asked the mayor to expand, specifically, on what those levels were, he replied his comments were in relation to feedback from residents regarding the increased presence of police officers across the town. As for specialized services, on the rare occasion they were needed, we taxpayers relied on the OPP for free; now we pay for specialized services 365 days a year. DiCarlo mentioned the town is saving $564,000 annually and that “a handful of people are opposed to it” and he is not sure why. The impetus for change was policing costs and council was committed to exploring all the policing options that would meet its fiscal responsibility. The Amherstburg Police Service Board approved a five-year dispatching contract with Windsor in April

2017. Following the switch, the town issued its RFP Police Services in July 2017 so how would LaSalle provide policing services while Windsor provided dispatching services? An OPP Costing was never obtained, as promised, and the 911 call taking was switched from the OPP to Windsor. I hope the mayor now understands why there may still be opposition. A five-year RFP transformed into a 20-year contract that did not yield “significant savings.” If we, like Orangeville, were to expect an accumulated savings of $58 million by 2036 by switching to OPP, I would have no objections. However, since we expect to save $9.65 million by 2036 by switching to Windsor, I have to question the decision and its impact on the town’s financial position for the next 2 decades. — Linda Saxon Amherstbug

Good People Exist While on a walk of the Navy Yard this week I came across a bag at the gazebo. At first I thought I was coming across a left behind bag of trash though once I got close enough to see what it was, I was overcome by a great surprise. It wasn’t a bag of trash I was stumbling upon but something very different. Written on the bag was the message “If you’re cold & need me enjoy :)”. Inside the bag was a white garment that could

I just want to acknowledge whoever this agent of good is. I want to say thank you to whoever you are for putting some good out there in the world. I hope your package finds someone in need and who can use a little good in their life. — Dylan Menard Amherstburg

Local teachers speak out on provincial funding cuts I am a member of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) and I oppose the cuts that the Ford government is trying to impose. OSSTF represents dozens of non-teaching job classes in addition to teachers. The publicly funded education system is under attack by our current government and I stand with all of my education colleagues across the province to defend against imposed funding cuts that will hurt students the most. I work as a teacher at General Amherst High School and my work is vital to the public education system and to our local community. On December 4th, 2019 and again on January 8th 2020, I participated in full withdrawals of service with my colleagues throughout Windsor and Essex County. OSSTF offered to cancel the strike on January 8th, if the Minister

of Education agreed to go back to the staffing levels of 2018-19. The government has agreed to this with other educational support worker unions, but would not agree to this singular issue when it was put to them by OSSTF. This is more evidence that the current government has no interest in protecting the public education system as we know it today and are creating chaos in the system in a cynical attempt to garner public support. Staffing levels are a vital protection to the students of today and tomorrow to ensure that they receive the level of service they deserve. I encourage all citizens of Ontario to support education workers and help us in protecting publicly funded education. Sincerely, – Dan Campana, General Amherst High School

Local restaurant gives back with free pasta dinner initiative Nellie Smith, Rosa’s Italian Restaurant manager, poses for a photo in front of the restaurant’s bar in Amherstburg. Smith and her staff gave away pasta for two days in December. BY JONATHAN MARTIN

By Jonathan Martin Amherstburg was treated to some free pasta this holiday season courtesy of Rosa’s Italian Restaurant. During two Saturdays in December, Rosa’s staff set up tables in the restaurant space bearing noodles and two types of sauce. Anyone who walked in during the early afternoon was offered a plate of the food free-of-charge. “It’s a way for us to give back to the community,” said Rosa’s manager, Nellie Smith. “Everyone deserves free stuff sometimes.” In the past, Rosa’s donated food to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission, a local non-profit organization that provides food and services to the

community. Smith said that by handing out dishes of pasta from the restaurant, the food might have a farther reach. On Dec. 14, Rosa’s served “around 20” plates of free pasta, Smith said. Two weeks later, Smith said they handed out around 40 meals. The members of Rosa’s staff who helped with the events donated their time, Smith said. Aside from tips – around $80 on Dec. 14 and nothing on Dec. 28 – nobody made any money from the endeavour. Still, Smith said she plans to hold similar events in the future. Ideally, she’d like to give away pasta quarterly to those in need in the community – if locals’ waistlines can handle it.

Noise dispute between radio-controlled flying club and neighbours comes before council By Ron Giofu

A noise dispute between the Sun Parlour R/C Flyers and their neighbours has come before town council and the town wants to look at what other municipalities do in terms of a bylaw. The club flies out of Tower Field, located at 4819 Concession 4 North near the radio towers in that area, and has been at that location since 1975, according to club president Paul Sousa. However, neighbours in the area have had enough of what they say is excessive noise coming from the planes. The club requested an amendment to the noise bylaw, which prohibits use of a combustion engine and the noise from it, with their suggested wording being that the prohibition be between the hours of 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. under the agricultural zoning. The club also asked for an exemption from the bylaw until a review from council on their amendment request. Since being allowed to fly at Tower Field, Sousa said the club has had a site that allows for the enjoyment of flying radio-controlled model airplanes with combustion engines. “The Sun Parlour RC Flyers have maintained a perfect safety record and has always been respectful of the town and its residents,” said Sousa, who pointed out there are about a dozen members of the club that reside in Amherstburg. Members must also be a member of the Model Aeronautics of Canada (MAAC), he added, before being allowed to fly at Tower Field. Sousa also stated club members range in age from 8-90 and said they had 86 members in 2019. “Throughout the year we have several events which include not only our members but R/C pilots from across the province and surrounding U.S. states and they spend their time here in Amherstburg with

accommodations, entertainment and dining,” he said. “Also a large number of public of all ages attend our events as they love the interaction with the pilots, model airplanes and competitions. The smiles we receive from the little ones and their parents as they build their glider planes is priceless.” However, residents of the area noted they have had enough. Tom Bateman, who lives nearby, said noise levels have increased “significantly” in recent years with the suspected cause being an increase in size and power of the planes as well as “more frequent and distant flights beyond the limits of their field. Jet-powered units are also now being flown at the site, creating incredible amounts of noise.” According to Bateman, multiple discussions were held with the club’s executive in 2019 “to again gain compliance with their own rules, decrease the noise generated by the planes and eliminate the flights beyond the field limits.” He said they were not successful in gaining resolution of their concerns and the situation became “unbearable for ourselves and the neighbours, prompting the contact with the bylaw enforcement office.” Bateman added the noise can be heard inside the home with the windows closed, adding sound levels on his property of 92 decibels have been recorded. “The noise is generated from early morning until dusk seven days a week and can be likened to a gas-powered weed whipper or chainsaw running next door all day long. It makes it difficult to enjoy an evening coffee in the backyard or host a weekend family barbecue while dealing with the constant drone of the plane’s engines,” he said. It was also alleged that “since the order to cease combustion engine operations was issued, there has continued to be several instances where those units have been operating.”

RTT FILE PHOTO

The Sun Parlour R/C Flyers are the subject of a noise issue as sound from Tower Field on Concession 4 North has been irritating nearby residents. Pictured is the open house and air show they had last August. Councillor Peter Courtney noted the club is flying in a rural area and wanted to find a compromise. “I’m perplexed. I love the history (of the club) but at the same time, it is violating our bylaw,” he said. Courtney later added “I don’t know where else you put this. How are other municipalities able to pull this off?” He asked Bateman for suggestions on where a suitable alternate location for the club would be but Bateman indicated it was beyond his ability to pick a new location. “Perhaps it should be at a proper airport?” Bateman said. Councillor Patricia Simone wondered if there were any other locations within the town, putting the Libro Centre out as a suggestion. However, Councillor Michael Prue believed council was debating the wrong issue as it centered around the bylaw and the specific clause within it that prohibits use of combustion engines. Prue said council should determine whether the bylaw should remain as it is or be substituted by something else and wanted a report on the matter, including comparisons to what happens in other municipalities that also have flying clubs. “Then, and only then, do we take the next step,” said Prue.

Local student helps area children with toy drive By Ron Giofu

A General Amherst High School student recently helped area children by organizing a toy drive of his own. Brandon Sheriff recently took part in the Ronald McDonald Fund toy drive at his school, but found that much of the donated items organized by the school were much smaller than he is used to donating. “I wanted to upgrade the selection with bigger toys, so I decided to do my own drive with Bridging North America,” said Sheriff. “The soft goods and toys I gathered were given to the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation, an organization that benefits underprivileged families year-round through cash and goods donations, and seasonal events to bring cheer to the kids.” Sheriff said the toy drive was done for the foundation, but in conjunction with Bridging North America (BNA). “Being new to the area and my dad working as a project manager for BNA worked well together since we don’t have a personal network that could support the donation. I partnered with the company in order to get the results I wanted, but the idea was mine,” he said. Sheriff said that with permission of BNA, he put a donation box in the project office and, with the help of his father’s

e-mail, informed all the employees on the job site of the donation and where to bring the items. “Every couple of days I went to the site to collect the items so that people could continue to bring goods in for the remainder of the donation period,” he said. The donations period was just ten days in December. “not a long time, but with the volume of stuff dropped off, I can’t complain.” “Even though I only caught onto the drive during their last week, I still collected 94 toys and soft goods for the foundation. It’s a huge increase from the other drives I have participated in previously, but if I were to do it again from the beginning of the collecting period, there would be a lot more to donate,” Sheriff added. Sheriff said he was raised doing events like this, stating his family loves being involved in donations for good causes, but it was always sponsored by his schools or neighbours during their Christmas parties. “Organizing my own event was really fulfilling, and I have a greater appreciation for those who set up much bigger donations and fundraisers because of the paperwork and the personal investment required for it to be a success,” he said. Making it an annual event is

“tentative,” he said, due to him going to university next year “somewhere in Ontario.” The Holiday Program that the donations ultimately went to were able to

support 761 families this past holiday season, Sheriff added. The foundation also takes money donations throughout the year to help fund their other programs.

Numerous issues raised at open mic session despite low attendance

Amherstburg resident Gary Bauer speaks to town council during an open mic meeting in McGregor. Despite a low number of people there, a number of concerns were raised during the meeting. By Ron Giofu The latest town open mic meeting was held last Saturday afternoon and a number of issues were raised despite low attendance. Only five members of the public braved the sloppy weather conditions and turned out to the Columbian Club in McGregor, matching the number of council members in attendance. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche chaired the meeting in the absence of Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, the latter being at an Essex Powerlines meeting, while Councillor Patricia Simone missed the meeting due to illness. The lack of a boat ramp proposed for the Duffy’s lands was one of the concerns for local resident Gary Goulin,

who believed the town was missing the boat by not having one. “Our town has 18 miles of waterfront and we’re losing all of our access to the water,” he said. “There’s a lot of boaters in Amherstburg. Amherstburg has a golden opportunity right now. It’s in a prime spot.” Goulin believed there was room for at least 20 boat trailers on the land, which is currently designated for an expansion of the Navy Yard Park, but said while he enjoys the park, it is expensive to maintain while putting a boat ramp there could attract people. “They are going to spend more money than those coming to the Navy Yard Park,” Goulin believed. “We need a ramp.” Meloche said there were concerns

raised over parking of boat trailers so that was a reason why the ramp was removed from the proposal. Councillor Don McArthur said he disagreed with the town’s decision several council terms ago to sell Ranta Marina. “We gave that away for a song,” he said. “It’s a mistake that still haunts us to this day.” McArthur recalled hearing from voters they wanted a ramp but not one downtown, suggesting the former Boblo dock, and agreed with Goulin about protecting access to the water. He also said he was in favour of the transient marina proposed for the Duffy’s site. Councillor Michael Prue called the decision to sell Ranta Marina “one of the dumbest decisions I ever saw” and also suggested the former Boblo dock could be an option for a ramp. He also wondered if purchasing the home next to the Wyandotte cemetery and mini-parkette at the foot of Middle Side Road could be an option. “Most people want to see a ramp, but not in the downtown core,” agreed Councillor Marc Renaud. Goulin was also concerned about the use of sidewalk clearing machines, questioning “isn’t that up to the people to clean their own sidewalks?” Meloche pointed out insurance rates are “skyrocketing” for municipalities as they are the ones that are often pursued in slip and fall cases. He added McGregor also benefited from the snow machines last winter. Renaud added seniors often can’t get out to clear their own sidewalks, adding insurance

liability is also a factor. Goulin also expressed concern over the town’s roads, culverts and other infrastructure. “Our infrastructure is falling apart,” he said. “We pay some of the highest taxes around. Where is our tax money going?” Councillor Peter Courtney believed “infrastructure was never factored into municipal governance years ago” with Meloche charging that “20 years of mismanagement of our assets” by previous councils helped create the current issues. He said the roads needs study helps “take the politics” out of infrastructure decision making. “We have so many roads to fix and not a lot of money to fix them,” added McArthur. Frank DiPasquale pointed out there are 2,500 acres of environmentally sensitive land near the Big Creek watershed and wondered if they are protected or whether they can be developed. Prue believed there were houses being built in places where they shouldn’t be and “as long as the town continues to say these places can be built on, they’ll be built on.” He noted an environmental committee is close to being established, as did Courtney. Courtney added the Official Plan is also close to needing an update. DiPasquale also referenced the Legion noise issue, with council members agreeing they all support the Legion but a compromise has to be reached on the noise.

Anderdon Public School raises over $1,600 to help wildlife organization in Australia By Ron Giofu

The struggles that the people and the wildlife in Australia have been undergoing thanks to the ongoing wildfires is not lost on a local school. Anderdon Public School held “Animal Spirit Day” Jan. 16 and students and teachers wore animal print clothing, clothing with animals pictured on them or brought stuffed animals from home as well as some money to donate to the cause. The event raised over $1,600 for WIRES, an organization helping wildlife in Australia.

It was an initiative started by teacher Jodi Nolin, her Grade 6 class and the eco-team she supervises. She said they partnered with the school’s spirit club, led by teacher Antonella Isabella. “We’re trying to raise money for the koalas and all of the other animals that are dying or are injured in the fires in Australia,” said Grade 6 student Robbie McLaughlin. Fellow student Liam Impens said they saw news reports about the fires and were “devastated” by them. “We wanted to make a difference and try to help,” added Celeste Andreychuk.

Concerns raised at Open Mic

Continued from Page 8

“We all want the music to continue,” said McArthur. “Music contributes to its vitality. We need to find a compromise people can deal with.”

Students at Anderdon Public School held “Animal Spirit Day” with the event being put on by the eco-team and spirit club. The school-wide event raised over $1,600. “It’s better to know you are doing something than just getting upset,” said classmate Lydia Mereszak. Nolin said other schools were encouraged to participate, with some high schools also getting involved such as Leamington and Kingsville. “That made us really happy,” she said. “There is always a way to step up and help.” The eco-team has done a wide range

McArthur pointed out there have been legal cases won by residents in such issues with Prue stating he has suggested noise barriers and speaker realignment to the south to the Legion. Alma St. resident Pat Coyle said he has noticed more and more tractor trailers coming down his road. “They are coming from Amherstburg, from Front Road down Alma,” he stated. “I don’t think Alma was designed for that.” Meloche believed enforcing road classifications could help while Prue noted load limits could also be enforced.

of other activities, with Colton Scholey, Kelsea Cookson and Kiaauna Gignac pointing out their trashless lunches, efforts to recycle milk bags and bottle caps, and turning the lights out at nutrition breaks to save energy. Max Ricciuti said they also look after “Mustang Woods,” a naturalized area on the northwest corner of the school grounds.

“They don’t pay much attention until they start getting tickets,” said Prue. McArthur added he would be in favour of load limit, noting an enforcement blitz helped curtail an issue on Concession 5 North near County Road 8 where the road was damaged due to excessive truck traffic. Gary Bauer asked about the water treatment plant needing expansion, with Meloche estimating that will be in the $30 million range. He said money is currently being set aside and grant money is hoped for, but noted there will likely be debt that will have to be incurred.

Kids Curing Cancer teams with hockey organizations for annual “Hockey Day”

BY JONATHAN MARTIN

Two local hockey players race for the puck at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020. The Amherstburg Minor Hockey Association partnered with Kids Curing Cancer to raise money for the Fight Like Mason Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House Charity. House teams wore yellow ribbons to raise awareness about cancer. By Jonathan Martin Locals youths aimed their slap-shots at cancer last Sunday – and likely scored another goal. Kids Curing Cancer (KCC), a local charity, the Amherstburg Admirals and the Amherstburg Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) teamed up for a “hockey day,” where local hockey teams donated money to KCC. The team that raises the most money will win each player a ticket to a Windsor Spitfires hockey game, set to be held at the end of February. Regular tickets for the game can be purchased through an Internet link provided

by KCC. Five dollars from each ticket purchased through that link will go back to the charity. Each player was also entered to win a $100 gift card to Pro Hockey Life, a retail store that specializes in hockey equipment. At the time of writing, the winners had not yet been announced. It is clear, however, that the day was a success. “I don’t have an exact figure right now, but players and their families have been donating like crazy,” said Jodi Baillargeon.

Baillargeon and her three children, Lauren, Ty and Kierstyn, founded KCC

when Jodi’s father succumbed to cancer. Since then, the family has raised more than $50,000 for local cancer nonprofits. This year, the money they raise will go towards the Fight Like Mason Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. Both have received KCC dollars in the past. In fact, Lauren, Ty and Kierstyn have their names emblazoned on the Ronald McDonald House donor wall. They’ve held a “hockey day” before, too. Several, actually. “We’re on year four now and (this event is) running pretty smooth for something that was supposed to be a one-time donation,” Jodi said. Lauren, 15, agreed. “Everyone has been super helpful and accommodating,” she said. “We had to get up early and we’ll be staying here late, so we really appreciate all the volunteers’ help. The hockey players and their coaches have been awesome, too.” Each of the house league players wore a yellow armband, affixed by Lauren and her friends, during the day’s games to raise awareness for the disease. The ice was full of blurred yellow as players raced by, and, soon, cancer support will be seeing a lot more green.

The Admirals are now Admirals Sunday night. 9-9 at home while they are 11-1-1-2 away from the Libro Centre. Avai very Preston Corp would follow up with a pair of goals for lable the 73's later in the period, the first coming with only 3:41 left in regulation time and the other into an empty net with 1:04 to play. “That was a desperate hockey team,” Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon said of Essex. “I don't think they want any part of Wheatley in the playoffs.” Chinese Food • Buffet Bortignon said the 73's have gone 0-5 against Dine-In • Take Out • Catering Wheatley this season and played hard to try and move 473 Sandwich St. W., Amherstburg up the standings to avoid a first-round match-up with 519-736-3088 or 519-736-0889 the Sharks. There are three games for the Admirals this week, two on the road. They are in Wheatley tonight (Wednesday) before heading to Mooretown Saturday night. Amherstburg’s Michael Hatch (3. left) tries to drive to the net despite being defended by Essex’s Jacob Cruickshank (40). Essex scored three times in the third period to beat Amherstburg 3-1 Sunday night at the Libro Centre.

Sebastien Tronchin scores a third period goal in General Amherst’s 9-0 win over Essex last Tuesday afternoon at the Libro Centre. Tronchin scored twice in the game, as did Tylor Fraser. By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Bulldogs are now 4-3 on the WECSSAA Tier 1 hockey season following a win last week. The Bulldogs' final game before the exam break was a convincing 9-0 win over a struggling Essex Red Raiders last Tuesday afternoon at the Libro Centre. Essex dropped to 0-6 with the loss. General Amherst put the game away early, scoring five times in the first period. They added one more in the second period and three more in the third before the curfew buzzer went off. Tylor Fraser and Sebastien Tronchin led the way for General Amherst with two goals each. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Owen Schipper, Jacob Howson, Carter Prieur, Josh Peddie and Tucker Laforet. Goaltender Keaton Conaty picked up the shut out. “It was a big win,” said Fraser. “We scored a lot today.” Fraser added they were able to keep pressure in the offensive zone. He said it wasn't a surprise to get the win over

Essex, adding they believe they can keep the momentum going after the exam break. Bulldogs head coach Pat Garrett said while it's fun for the boys to score a lot of goals, they have to keep the momentum going after the exam break as they have two tough home games. “We're enjoying the moment right now,” he said. “We'll be busy after the exam break.” While the Bulldogs can't play or practise during exams, many of the players still play on house league or travel hockey teams and that will allow them to stay sharp. Garrett noted the WECSSAA regular season schedule shrunk from 12 games last year to nine games this year and the playoff format has also changed. “I'm looking forward to the tournamentstyle playoffs,” he said. General Amherst concludes the 2019-20 WECSSAA Tier 1 regular season schedule in early February. They host L'Essor Feb. 6 and the Belle River Nobles come to the Libro Centre Feb. 11. Both games start at 3 p.m.

5 Year Anniversary My Dear Gary, On this fifth year, I reflect back and see how far I have come. I read a quote today that said “real success means experiencing internal growth”. I suppose that means that I have been successful as these years have taught me many life lessons that have changed me in so many unexpected, positive ways. I miss you but I know you walk beside me, your children and grandchildren every day.

has moved, although, not far!

Passed away peacefully on January 15, 2020 into the comforting arms of his daughter, Leslie (Gary) Nantais (2007), whom he missed dearly. Loving husband of Dorothy (Vollans) for 67 ½ years. Loving dad to daughter Susan (Richard) Hebert. Cherished grandfather to Matthew (Valerie), Jeffrey (Jenna) Nantais. Proud great-grandfather to Benjamin David, Amelia, Noelle, Elizabeth Nantais. Sister Shirley Feher will miss all the reminiscing growing up on a farm, on the banks of the Detroit River in Amherstburg. Sisters in law, Mary Vollans, Anice Langille, and Nelda Vollans. Also remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents John and Hazel, siblings Harvey, Harold, Elmer, Melvin, Ilene (Squire), Allen, Geraldine (Elliott) and Jack. At the age of 13, dad landed a summer job on Bob-Lo Island for $1.90 per day plus tips, at the roller skating rink. At the age of 15 he was hired by Hugh Wigle to be a glazier at his Amherstburg Hardware Store, where he remained for 24 years. Mom and dad’s first date was October 3, 1950 after meeting at the Amherstburg Echo. Mom was replacing his sister Geraldine in the office. They married June 19, 1952. In 1963 they purchased their own clay hill, 50 acres in Colchester South, Double “D” Acres, where they remained for 41 years. So many prize winning Harrow Fair Ribbons! The farm is in good hands. In 1968, he joined Local 552 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, for life. Growing up, across from Bob-Lo Island and listening to music from the dance hall and from the Ste. Clair and Columbia Bob-Lo boats he took up piano playing. One of his bands, ‘The Blue Notes’ with best friend Len Lovell and brother in law Fred Squire got various gigs for $5.00 a night. In retirement, dad and mom volunteered his musical talents to various places, Kingsville Court, Erie Glen Manor, Leamington Nursing Home and Leamington Hospital. Dad composed 10 songs including ‘Matthew Joe’ and ‘Matthew’s Little Brother Jeff’. ‘This Time’ 1981 and ‘Stay with Me’ 1982 have registered copy rights. Dad sent in musical material for Anne Murray’s consideration in 1982. Special thank you to, family for sitting with Dad, Doctors Cheung, Springer and Sorensen for 25 extra years, his caring Iler Lodge family and all those who helped dad celebrate his 90th. birthday, December 10, with cards and best wishes. Although the challenges of growing old made it impossible to remain together, dad never stopped loving mom. Out of respect for mom there is no visitation. A private burial will be held at the Iler Cemetery, Colchester. A “Double D” Acres rock with a plaque in memory of dad’s dad, John sits vigil. In lieu of flowers donations made by cheque to the Harrow Food Bank or Essex County 4H Club would be appreciated. You may send your online condolences at www.geraldasmith.ca

Bulldogs record first two wins of the season last week By Ron Giofu

The week didn't start well for the General Amherst Bulldogs senior boys basketball team but it ended on a high note. The Bulldogs played last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, losing their first game but winning the next two. The Bulldogs hosted the Massey Mustangs last Tuesday night and fell behind 24-0 after a quarter and 34-9 at the half en route to losing 53-34. Emotions ran high in the game with head coach Frank Palumbo being ejected in the second half, which forced

him to miss Wednesday night's home game against Tecumseh Vista Academy. Against Tecumseh, the Bulldogs finally won their first regular season game of the 2019-20 WECSSAA Tier 2 senior boys basketball season. After losses in their first four regular season games (not counting tournaments), the Bulldogs pulled out a 35-30 win over the Vortex. “It was a good win for us. I'm very proud of the guys,” said assistant coach Mike Essenpreis. “It was a tough game against Tecumseh Vista Academy the (Tuesday) night, a tough loss.” Essenpreis believed they played with next night. “We played well defensively,” too much emotion against Massey and were able to come back and play better he said. “Offensively, we're still a work-in-progress.” The Bulldogs also wanted to get the win in honour of their coach. “I told the guys, let's win this game for Frank,” said Essenpreis. “I thought they came out as a team and supported each other, supported Frank and really played well together.”

Riley Sesto (42) lays in a basket during the General Amherst Bulldogs’ win over Tecumseh Vista Academy last Wednesday. The Bulldogs won 35-30.

Palumbo returned the next night as the Bulldogs travelled to Belle River to battle the Nobles. Palumbo noted the Bulldogs won their second straight game, a 33-30 victory. General Amherst was in Kingsville Monday night for a game (more details on that game to come next week) and now enter the exam break. They head to L'Essor Feb. 4 and host Leamington Feb. 6 to conclude the regular season. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Lady Gens lose first match of season against Lajeunesse By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens haven’t been playing as well as they should be, according to their coaches, and paid for it last week. The Lady Gens dropped their first match of the season last Thursday night against Lajeunesse, losing two sets to one by scores of 25-20, 21-25 and 22-25. Their record dropped to 6-1 after that match. “I hope it’s a wakeup call,” said assistant coach Mary Ewer. Head coach Jeff Miller said they have been playing poorly for a while and things finally caught up to them. “We finally got what we deserved,” said Miller. “We’ve really been undisciplined, sloppy and we’re not playing the game the right way.” Miller gave credit to Lajeunesse, saying they were the better team last Thursday night. “Lajeunesse was better prepared and better coached,” he said. “They played the sport better fundamentally than we

did. Lajeunesse deserved to beat us.” Miller hoped “we would get our wakeup call before this,” stating they didn’t play well the previous week at Tecumseh Vista Academy. He said they are not playing well together right now and not showing the appropriate discipline. “We’re not very good right now,” he said after Thursday’s match. “Our record looks better than where we are. Overall, we are nowhere near where our record shows.” The Lady Gens were in Windsor two days earlier and swept the Kennedy Clippers 25-22, 25-13 and 25-16. Despite the win, Miller said the Lady Gens did not play well in that game either. “It has not been a good week.” General Amherst now breaks for exams, not returning to the court for game action until Feb. 4 when they host Essex in a pivotal 5:20 p.m. match. Things don’t get easier after that, as they travel to Sandwich to play a talented Sabres team Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.

Lady Gens upend Kingsville to remain undefeated in girls high school hockey By Ron Giofu

The General Amherst Lady Gens made the most of their lone game between the Christmas and exam breaks. Carlie Hayes’ third period goal last Wednesday afternoon gave the Lady Gens a 1-0 victory over the Kingsville Cavaliers at the Libro Centre. Jaiden Stiles picked up the shutout for General Amherst. Cassidy Atkinson said they played well against a tough, hard working team and added the Lady Gens worked hard as a team to get the victory. She said they passed well and worked hard themselves in order to pick up their third win of the 2019-20 WECSSAA Tier 2 hockey season. “Overall, we played a really good game,” added Atkinson. Kira McCurdy, a Grade 9 player, believed both she and the team played well against Kingsville. “I feel it was the best game I’ve played so far,” said McCurdy. “We played a pretty good game against them.” General Amherst head coach Dan Pettypiece said

Cassidy Zelle (left) of General Amherst fights off a poke check as she carries the puck into the Kingsville zone last Wednesday. The Lady Gens beat Kingsville 1-0 and remain undefeated heading into the exam break. it was a scrappy game but noted “we’ve been off for a while and we didn’t expect things to go smoothly.” He added the return of Sam Connell to the Lady Gens’ lineup was big for them. “I think defensively, we did a good job,” said Pettypiece. “(Kingsville) didn’t get a lot of close in chances. Jaiden made the saves she needed to make.” Pettypiece said normally he doesn’t like 1-0 games but was fine with this one as General Amherst was on the “right side” of it. He added it meant the girls couldn’t relax and had to work hard the entire game. “It was better to have a 1-0 game as they couldn’t hold back and they had to grind it out,” he said. “It

was a grind.” The Lady Gens are still undefeated as they are 3-0-2 on the year, good for eight points. They sit six points behind first place Essex, though the Red Raiders’ regular season is finished and General Amherst still has three games left to play. The next game for the Lady Gens is Feb. 3 at home versus Tecumseh Vista Academy at 3:30 p.m. Their final two regular season games are on the road as they travel to Leamington Feb. 5 for a 3 p.m. game against Cardinal Carter. They finish the regular season in south Windsor Feb. 13 with a 3:15 p.m. game against Holy Names.

Windsor Police Service bids farewell to police dog

Sgt. Rob Wilson and his police dog Vegas pose for photographs during the press conference to announce Vegas’ retirement. Vegas had been with Windsor police since Sept. 2011. Wilson now moves into the patrol support unit.

With Vegas’ retirement, the canine unit returns to a five-dog complement. “He’s non-stop,” said Wilson, noting he has had to put five yards of sand into his backyard due to Vegas’ constant energy. “He wants to work all the time.” Wilson is a 21-year veteran of the Windsor Police Service and spent over 14 years in the canine unit. Vegas and Wilson attended over 3,300 calls for service. Vegas and Wilson also were awarded trophies in competitions held by the

United States Police Canine Association, with many on display during the press conference. Wilson said Vegas “kept me on my toes as at all times.” Vegas will still live with Wilson but will be trained to be a pet rather than a police dog. Wilson said it is a slow process to get Vegas to relax and be a calmer animal. “It’s a work in progress,” he said. “I’m up to the challenge.”

Enjoy every moment The Windsor Police Service bid farewell to one of its four-legged officers recently. Police Dog Vegas retired over the holidays with public information officer Sgt. Steve Betteridge stating it is always “a very special occasion” when an officer or civilian member retires, adding “it is no different” when an animal bids farewell as well. Vegas, a ten-year-old Belgian Malinois, was the centre of attention at the media conference to announce the

retirement with Const. Lance Montigny, who heads Windsor Police’s canine unit, noting that Vegas was imported from Germany after Montigny and Sgt. Rob Wilson, who would be paired with Vegas, saw a video of him. “Officer Wilson said at that time ‘we need to have this dog’,” said Montigny. From Sept. 2011 until his Dec. 2019 retirement, Vegas assisted with over 60 arrests. He weighs in the neighbourhood of 65-70 pounds and will remain at Wilson’s home with the sergeant now transferring into the patrol support unit.
