Admirals raise $6,100 for “Brave Brock” By Ron Giofu The town’s Jr. C hockey club has its share of fans and showed Dec. 29 they are also fans of a local boy battling cancer. The Integrity Amherstburg Admirals hosted “Brave Brock Night” prior to their game with the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks at the Libro Centre. The hockey club’s efforts saw approximately $6,100 be raised with proceeds to benefit ten-year-old Brock Hasson, an Amherstburg Public School student who is once again battling Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. It is the third time he has battled the rare form of cancer in his young life. The Admirals worked with partners including the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment, Integrity Tool and Mold, General Amherst High School, Amherstburg Buick GMC, the Windsor Spitfires and the Thunderhawks to help raise the funds. Brock’s older brother Liam dropped the puck for the ceremonial faceoff prior to the game. Admirals co-owner Wes Ewer said there were “a million reasons” the team put on the event, adding co-owners Matt Fox and Gaspare Spada immediately got on board with the idea when he brought it to them. He noted he saw how the community was pulling together for Brock and his family and wanted to assist as well. Ewer noted he organizes a charity hockey game with friends every holiday season and that proceeds this year went to the Hasson family. From that, the idea was hatched to also include the Admirals as part of the fundraising efforts. That charity game raised $900 of the $6,100 total. “We decided to do this for Brock,” said Ewer, adding the town donated an hour of ice time for the public skate before the game and Integrity Tool and Mold stepped up with a $1,500 donation. Officers with the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment donated $440, Proto Plastics kicked in $1,000 while other businesses and groups donated

Rally towels were sold and a pre-game ceremony was
held with Liam arriving at centre ice in a Camaro provided by Amherstburg Buick GMC. The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment also had their vehicles on the ice for the opening ceremony as well, a ceremony observed by Brock himself as he was streamed live inside the arena from his hospital bed in London.

Hockey for Hospice raises record-breaking $372,322 in 2019 By Ron Giofu
Another year, another fundraising record for the Hockey for Hospice Tournament. The local hockey tournament celebrated its 24th year over the Christmas holidays, with action spilling over into arenas in Amherstburg, LaSalle, Lakeshore, Tecumseh and Central Park Athletics in Windsor. When the money was counted, the teams raised a new record of $372,322, over $25,000 more than the 2018 total. The 2019 total brings the overall amount that the players and coaches raised to just shy of $3.7 million over the 24-year period. The hockey tournament featured 134 house league teams from Amherstburg and the rest of Essex County, Windsor and from as far as Chatham-Kent with 265 hockey games being played over the three days. Tim Beaulieu, who co-chairs the annual event with Paul Pietraszko, said there were 134 teams participating in the 2019 Hockey for Hospice Tournament, up two teams from the 2018 events. That translated into approximately 1,900 players taking part. Beaulieu stated the house league teams ranged from tyke teams to bantam teams for both boys and girls. He called the 2019 fundraising total “incredible.” “The kids raise a ton,” said Beaulieu. “They raise the lion’s share.” About $50,000 also comes from sponsorships, he added. The tournament has grown from being a skate-athon at the former AMA Arena in Amherstburg to where it is today. It remains a tribute to a former staff member of Beaulieu, who developed a nagging cough and found out afterward she had spots on her lungs. She was only 21-years-old at the time. The woman died a few months later. Her initials “Y.L.” are now part of the Hockey for Hospice logo.

The Amherstburg Midway Appliance Team pee wee team won their age division at the 24th annual Hockey for Hospice Tournament and raised $3,400 in the process. Between Beaulieu and his wife Janet, Pietraszko and his family, Beaulieu said it has become a mulitgenerational event. “It’s moved on to our kids,” he said. “I don’t know if it will ever end. When it’s time for Janet, Paul and I to retire, we’ll pass the hat to the next generation.” Katharen Bortolin, manager of community engagement and advancement communications with the Hospice of Windsor & Essex County, said the organization is grateful to work with the tournament committee again this year as it is the largest third party fundraiser for the Hospice for the year. “Hospice is only 40 per cent government funded, which generally shocks people,” said Bortolin. “This event literally helps us take care of our patients throughout the year and help our community.” Bortolin said the Hospice of Windsor & Essex

Pastor John Bustard gestures during his farewell celebration at Amherstburg Community Church Sunday morning. Bustard and his wife Myrna have retired, with the last six-and-a-half years being spent in Amherstburg. By Ron Giofu The congregation at Amherstburg Community Church (ACC) has bid farewell to its lead pastor and celebrated the accomplishments of both him and his wife. Pastor John Bustard has retired from ACC and the six-and-a-half year tenure that he spent alongside wife Myrna at the Alma St. church was celebrated at last Sunday's service. Pastor Al Saunders will take over in the interim. Bustard said it was a day that was anticipated for three to four months after he announced his retirement and came with “mixed emotions.” He said the church community at ACC is like a “family” and has deep compassion for people and families. “There's a lot of things going on here,” said Bustard. “This is a very loving congregation.” Raised on a farm in northern Ontario, Bustard said it was at age 16 he made the decision that “Christ is the one I'm following.” He would head to Dallas and studied theology and travelled with the church he joined there before returning to his family car dealership business. However, his passion for ministry would eventually lead him to Kitchener, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Collingwood, and he would meet and marry Myrna along the way. “After 15 years, our assignment was complete. It was finished,” said Bustard, who was lead pastor there. Wanting time to themselves, the Bustards were hesitant at first of accepting a new assignment but would eventually find themselves giving more reasons to come to Amherstburg than they were giving not to. They would finally decide to join the ACC in 2013. “I never knew Amherstburg existed,” he said. “I had never heard of it.” Now, over six years later, the Bustards own their own home in Amherstburg and have income properties as well. “Retirement is not the right word for where we're at,” he said, preferring words like “re-calibration” or “redirection” instead. There is some excitement about the future, but Bustard said they will miss the people at ACC as well. “It takes courage to move into the unknown,” he said. “We'll be here for the time being. We're looking at volunteering in different areas of the community,

General Amherst High School has “iconic importance to Amherstburg” Amherstburg is about to become an example where the political process sets a community backward. A new high school has been assessed to be needed and repositioned far from its present location. Obviously a decision concluded by outside forces not in tune with the heartbeat of the town. General Amherst High School is an iconic history monument to the town. It is positioned as a focal point to those entering the town core. Students fill the streets and sidewalks giving youth and vitality to the community. It’s surrounded by parks, playing fields and eateries to enhance that exuberance. Its historic character is banked by famous Fort Malden. We are told it is outdated and not cost effective to maintain. We are told it needs expensive expenditures to meet modern codes. More importantly, at what cost are we willing to rip the heart out of a community? We have a structure that is more than an education institute. It is the bloodline of the town that it has served for a
www.rivertowntimes.com
century. Now, unaware politicians, are about to distort the face of the town. A solid structure built like a cathedral is about to be abandoned and restructured with drywall, wood and bricks in the back streets of the town . Might it not be more of an educational and community asset to spend a fraction of the cost of a new school on the present location and modernize the “jewel of the town?” Put in elevators, modernize heating systems, restructure stairs to meet codes, install modern roofs. May I point out there are many old institutions that still serve with distinction. University of Notre Dame comes to mind. Who would attempt to replace the golden dome? The Vatican has been around for ages. General Amherst is a solid structure reflecting the same iconic importance to Amherstburg. Allowing outside bureaucrats to come in and destroy it is a crime. — Victor DiNardo Amherstburg

Happy New Year to all the staff
Power outage at the Salmoni Building? Last weekend I invited friends from Chatham to Amherstburg to join me for dinner and to take a lovely stroll through our amazing display of “River Lights” throughout the Toddy Jones Park, Navy Yard and downtown. We had a wonderful dinner downtown and continued our walk. My friends were so impressed with the lights and decor of the whole downtown core – having all the store fronts decorated – Chatham doesn’t have anything like this. When we got to the corner of Dalhousie and Richmond – my friends asked me if there was a power outage at the Salmoni building. There wasn’t
a light, no Christmas decorations to be seen anywhere. The building looked deserted. I couldn’t explain it. But then I found out that the residents of the Salmoni Building opted out of having the building decorated. I certainly don’t understand that. The town received a grant to decorate the downtown core, it was free and looks amazing – and here the biggest, tallest most impressive building sat dark and gloomy - Baaah hum bug! — Eleanor Renaud Amherstburg

A message of thanks from the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission As the New Year begins, we look back on 2019 with satisfaction, knowing the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission was indeed “blessed to be a blessing.” Our hearts are warmed as we think of the lives we have touched through such tangible ways as serving hot meals and distributing food baskets. This past holiday season was particularly fun and fulfilling for us. Our Tambola fundraiser was a great success—the turkeys with trimmings went far in feeding those who attended our annual Christmas dinner, now in its 19th year. We would like to take this opportunity to offer our deep gratitude to all who helped make 2019 a truly successful year for our community programs and services. We thank our board of directors for the gift of their valuable time and invaluable support. We are grateful for our dedicated Volunteers, who ensure the smooth running of our day-to-day operations. Without them, quite simply, our mission would be impossible! We are proud to acknowledge the incredibly

generous community support from which we benefit. The local businesses, schools, churches, clubs, unions, and individuals that donated time, energy, funds, goods — and smiles! — are too numerous to mention singularly. But know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Your generosity allowed the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission to make a real difference in your community. Finally, we would like to express appreciation to all who visit the mission to share in or add to its warm, safe and friendly environment. Only when we give freely do we truly receive blessings. We trust that such kindness will, in time, be reciprocated to you tenfold. Thank you for helping to keep the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission going and we wish you and your families a Happy and Most Prosperous New Year! On behalf of our board of directors and volunteers, Sincerely, — Tim McAllister, President Amherstburg Food and Fellowship

“Brave Brock Night”helps raise money for cancer Continued from Page 1 Those wishing to donate to Brock and his family can do so through a GoFundMe page found at www. gofundme.com and searching “Brave Brock III.” Ken Shine, owner/GM and coach of the Thunderhawks, said his team was eager to participate with the Admirals on the event. They taped their sticks blue – Brock’s favourite colour – and were happy to be part of the evening. “We jumped on board,” said Shine. “The kids were all in favour.” One of Wallaceburg’s players lost a brother due to cancer and Shine said the event was “near and dear to our hearts.” “It’s one of those events everyone needs to rally around,” said Shine. Shine added events like “Brave Brock Night” shows that whatever happens on the ice stays there and “off the ice is where the caring comes in.”
Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon was pleased to see the support from the community. “It was awesome to see all of the families and kids come out,” said Bortignon. “The amount of money raised was phenomenal. I think the community of Amherstburg always rallies to support and lend a hand.” Bortignon said “it puts the game of hockey in perspective” and noted that while Brock hasn’t had the same opportunities in life as other kids his age due to his illness, the hope is that he is well enough to come to an Admirals’ playoff game. Family friend Carrie Roke said the support from the community has been amazing. “(Brock’s mother Natalie) is overwhelmed and thankful for the support,” said Roke. “She thinks it’s fabulous.” Support has been steady, she added, noting the recent help from the Amherstburg Fire Department

A public skate was held prior to the Admirals’ Dec. 29 game with the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks. The Admirals raised money through this and other donations as part of “Brave Brock Night” at the Libro Centre. Local private school allowed open burns after council waives designation By Ron Giofu Camp fires and open burns will be permitted at St. Peter's ACHS College School, but just not during the day. St. Peter's ACHS College School headmaster Peter Thyrring had appeared before council a couple of months ago making the request to have camp fires at his private boys elementary school. As it is a school, it had been designated a “sensitive receptor” by the Amherstburg Fire Department under the town's open burn bylaw. However, at the Dec. 9 town council meeting, council members decided to give the go-ahead to the school, located at 6101 County Road 20 in Malden Centre, and allow them to have open burns in the evenings. While the school, nor the neighbours within a 100-metre radius of the school, can't have fires between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., the “sensitive receptor” status was dropped so they could still have open burns outside of those hours. Councillor Peter Courtney put forth the motion to have the “sensitive receptor” designation dropped, noting St. Peter's ACHS College School is a
different sort of operation as it doesn't just operate during the regular school day. He noted there is a residency program offered there with the school also offering camps and other programming during the summer months. Fire chief Bruce Montone had questioned during the previous meeting about possibly opening up a door where other schools and organizations could make similar requests but Courtney believed St. Peter's ACHS College School was a unique operation that could be allowed an exemption from the “sensitive receptor” designation within the bylaw. Thyrring said he was appreciative of Courtney's efforts. “That is the best news ever,” he said. “It will help us so much more in terms of our camps.” Thyrring also noted that his school is unique as it offers residency to students and camps in the summer, stating “it's cool to have a fire at night” during the camps. “This is going to be an absolutely awesome thing,” said Thyrring. “The fact council understood our needs and supported them was also very good.”

Mayor looks back on 2019, looks ahead to 2020 By Ron Giofu
The Town of Amherstburg had its ups and downs in 2019 but Mayor Aldo DiCarlo is pleased with this past year and looks to keep things going in 2020. The year 2019 was the first one under the contract with the Windsor Police Service and DiCarlo is satisfied with the policing offered by the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment. The mayor said that the majority of comments he has heard from residents have been positive. “Based on feedback I received, it has gone smoothly,” said DiCarlo. “The most noticeable thing was there was not a whole lot to notice.” According to DiCarlo, there was a lot of discussion during the process that most officers would remain the same Divorced or separated? and the cruisers would Find help, hope and healing maintain a similar appearance and he Wednesdays believes that held up in January 8 - April 8 2019. He said there was 7:00 - 8:30 pm an increase in service Lighthouse Church levels in Amherstburg and credits the officer in 266 King St., Amherstburg charge for his work since For more info call the changeover. 519-962-9525 “I would say that has got a lot to do with Staff 13-week seminar/ Sgt. (David) DeLuca,” support group. said the mayor. “He You can join at any time! knows policing, he www.divorcecare.org knows the town and he
knows the officers.” DiCarlo said the budget process showed the town is saving $564,000 annually and says it’s been a case of “so far, so good” as it pertains to the police switch. “For me, it’s all about results,” he said. “Other than a handful of people who are opposed to it – and I’m not exactly sure why because I think it’s working out great for everyone – I have absolutely no regrets.” DiCarlo cast the deciding vote in Feb. 2018 to switch to the Windsor Police Service after months of contentious debate in the community on the subject. The town has faced disputes over pay that has been owed to Amherstburg officers in the months since. The mayor added “maybe other municipalities will join as well” and he compared Amherstburg to other area municipalities and “we’re doing better than most.” As for the rest of the town in 2019, DiCarlo said “in general, the good is still pretty good.” “Our tourism and events are still drawing a lot of people and we are doing well with that,” he said. The town’s reputation is as good, if not better, because of that, he believed. “As people have seen, we are drawing new development,” he added, citing the recent opening of Wendy’s as an example. The town is building its reserves, DiCarlo stated, but cautioned it is still not where it should be. “Our finances continue to be good and bad,” he said. The reserves have grown from $250,000 in late-2014 to about $10 million now, he said, but Amherstburg still lags well behind similar sized municipalities. “That’s something we’re going to have to continue to work on,” he said.
Development and growth continue to happen, DiCarlo continued. “Our residential developments are doing quite well,” he reported, citing about 700 new homes coming to the Kingsbridge subdivision as one example. Other “smaller developments” are on the way as well, he indicated. “We do have a few more developments in the works,” DiCarlo said, adding that private industry often wants their plans kept quiet until things are finalized and ready to proceed. “The good news is developers are still knocking on our door,” said DiCarlo. “For me, as mayor, that’s huge. When I started, not a lot of people were talking well about building in Amherstburg. Now developers want property and there’s not a lot available.” If things go according to plan, DiCarlo noted the Amico hotel planned for the corner of Dalhousie St. and Gore St. could break ground in the spring. The second hotel, planned for the intersection of Simcoe St. and Meloche Road near the Libro Centre, is progressing as well. “We’re hoping to see something on that soon (coming) to council,” said DiCarlo. A lot of people are anticipating a hotel, he added as “it’s something we’ve needed for quite some time.” The mayor believed sports tourism is also doing well, stating that Rose City Gymnastics is bringing a provincial gymnastics championships back to the Libro Centre in April for the third straight year. “They just want us to build a hotel,” he said. There will be word on whether the town’s $50 million grant application for the “Great Spaces, Great Places” was successful as well. The town could get all of the funding, a partial grant or nothing at all. “We’re hoping for the best on that,” said DiCarlo. “If it comes through, that will be a lot to work on.” Noting that every municipality has its challenges, DiCarlo is hopeful for big things in 2020. He added his health was an obstacle for him in 2019 but he’s back at it and everything “seems to be fine.” “I’m looking forward to a great 2020,” said DiCarlo.

Local woman makes second humanitarian trip to Africa By Ron Giofu
An Amherstburg woman went to the African country of Tanzania in 2018 as part of a Rotary delegation and decided to return on her own this year to see how the children she met were doing. Laura George recently returned from Tanzania after a two-week visit, spanning four time zones in two days to get there. She visited with children she had connected with during her first visit and wanted to see what progress was being made in the African country. “I didn't go as part of a group,” she said. “I went by myself.” When George went in 2018, she was part of a group of Rotarians and they worked with Timothy Massawe from the Hia Rotary Club of Moshi. She kept in touch with Massawe and his group SACCO, which sponsors children to help pay for their education. She stayed with him on her second trip. “They find children who need sponsors,” said George. “They are sponsored from all over the world. One hundred per cent of the money goes to the children.” SACCO was founded in memory of Massawe's sister Mary, who would take in school children who had to walk a great distance to get home or had no home to go back to. George sponsors a young girl named Manka while her church, Harrow United Church, sponsors an older youth named Angela. Many of the students come to school with no shoes and others are battling illness and malnutrition. “They walk miles to go to school,” said George. George first met Manka last year and recalled the girl crying and hoping to be picked up and held by someone. While visitors are not supposed to pick up other people's children, George looked around and picked up the crying child, who was malnourished and not in good health. “I can't describe the environment she lived in,” said George. “It was pretty bad.” After returning home to Amherstburg, George said she couldn't get Manka out of her mind. She asked Massawe about her and found out Manka was living with her grandmother and being raised with her three siblings. George found out that she also shares a birthday with Manka. Angela, 13, broke out into tears when she found out why George was there. She said Angela needs glasses, which cost $100 in Tanzania, but her father only makes $6 per month.
George said education is not a right in Tanzania and a class she visited had 136 students in it. She also visited an education centre that Rotary sponsored, which was dedicated in 2018. George came home early with a bout of malaria but said she would still likely go back to Tanzania at some point. “It feels like home when I go there,” she said. “It definitely changes your perspective when you come home.” George also wants her own children to know “it's a big wide world” and there are many things that Canadians take for granted. While she knows she can't change everything in Tanzania by herself, she is hopeful of making a difference in the lives of at least a few young people. The children in Tanzania also know they are loved in Canada. “They know people halfway across the world are praying for them and it's not lost on them,” said George. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a child in Tanzania, they can contact George at laura.m.george1@ gmail.com.

RTT publisher retires from the newspaper industry
A familiar face at the River Town Times has chosen to leave the industry. Peggy Thompson has retired from the newspaper business after 33 years, concluding her career in late-December. She indicates that while she is no longer in the newspaper business, she will stay active in other ways stating she has “no intention of slowing down in 2020. I can’t wait to see what new opportunities present themselves.” Thompson said she knew in elementary school that she wanted to work in the newspaper industry. “Immediately upon graduating from St. Clair College, I began my career at The Chatham Daily News doing a very important job - typing in bowling scores for the sports editor,” she said. After doing some reporting, she married her husband Greg and relocated to Amherstburg. Thompson began working for The Windsor Star where she started reporting for Neighbourhood News, typing recipes for Karen Hall and “found my passion” when she began working on the advertising side of the business, where she worked in both as a classified
call centre representative as well as in advertising sales. After 23 years at The Windsor Star, she moved to the River Town Times. “Peggy’s career at the RTT began in 2009, when the RTT was really struggling to stay open with the advertising losses from the recession. We couldn’t afford to hire her at the time, but she was persuasive and wouldn’t take no for an answer,” recalled former owner Karen Morrell. “If I remember correctly she worked free for a few weeks just to prove herself. And she did. She was creative and quickly built good relationships with the customers and people in the community. In less than a year she really turned the newspaper around, going above and beyond her job description of sales manager by coming up with solutions in all areas of the newspaper be it delivery, editorial issues, staffing and, most importantly, community involvement.” According to Morrell: “The newspaper was thriving once again. She was tireless and also very giving, always helping out her fellow employees or other people in the community. If someone came into the
Local public schools to be impacted again with one-day walkout By Ron Giofu A labour dispute between the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) and the Ontario government will once again impact WindsorEssex County, should a settlement not be reached before today (Wednesday). She became the ‘go to’ person in the community. I wish her a well-deserved happy retirement.” Throughout her career, Thompson said she has met “the most interesting people” and enjoyed working in her home community the last decade. She will continue to work locally as the new community awareness/fundraising co-ordinator at ACS. “Free weekly newspapers are still thriving as it is the only reliable and
FEESO, teachers and education workers represented by the union will participate in another one-day full withdrawal of services in “selected locations across Ontario.” One of those “selected areas” will be this one as the Greater Essex County District School Board is one of the boards identified by the union. On the same day, OSSTF/FEESO members in other school boards will hold information pickets in front of schools, at MPPs’ offices, and in other locations throughout the entire province, the union stated in a press release.. A limited withdrawal of services, which began Nov. 26, will continue province-wide, the OSSTF/FEESO said. Public schools in Essex County and Windsor were also impacted Dec. 4. “After more than eight months of negotiations, the Minister of Education is still committed to the Doug Ford agenda of larger class sizes, mandatory
accurate source for town council coverage, sports and community events,” said Thompson. “I am looking forward to 2020 and as I have always said to everyone who calls or walks in the door at the RTT office, ‘keep reading the RTT.’” RTT owner Jim Heyens wished Thompson all the best. "(Co-owner) Sheila (McBrayne) and I wish Peggy all the best. Her contributions to the River Town Times have been greatly appreciated." e-learning, and the ongoing erosion of crucial supports and services our most vulnerable students rely on for an equitable chance to succeed,” said OSSTF/FEESO president Harvey Bischof in the press release. “Our job action next Wednesday will affect some school boards for one day, but the Ford government’s policies, if we are not able to reverse them, will continue to create chaos in the education system for years to come. Ontario students deserve better, and that is exactly what we’re fighting for. As a new year begins, we hope the Ford government and the Minister of Education will finally be prepared to do the right thing and negotiate a deal that is good for students, good for teachers and education workers, and good for the future economy of Ontario.” In response, Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce issued the following statement: “Parents have been clear: strikes by unions hurt kids and investments should go to support student success, not towards enhanced compensation. We agree with Ontario parents. This is why we will continue to vigorously champion the interests of students and seek stability for parents in 2020, who are frustrated and tired of the union-led escalation that began in 2019. This continued strike action is unfair to students and their families." NDP leader Andrea Horwath stated: “It’s shameful that Doug Ford is digging in his heels on his plan to fire thousands of teachers, cram more Currently kids into classrooms, and accepting force mandatory courses online. The students who new patients will lose another day of and same-day school on Wednesday emergencies! continue to pay the price as pawns in the fight Ford picked with teachers. It’s time for Ford to fully reverse his devastating Dr. Roy Dr. Sandra Dr. Dennis education cuts, so the two Petras Frederick Petras sides can bargain a deal and get everyone back to Call for class.”

New doctor running his new practice at Amherstburg Health Care Centre By Ron Giofu A new full-time physician has been welcomed at the Amherstburg Health Care Centre. Dr. Richard Bernyk is now running his new practice in Amherstburg, joining the team at the Amherstburg Health Care Centre a few weeks ago. He is an Amherstburg native coming back to town to practice medicine. “I grew up in Amherstburg,” said Bernyk. “This town has raised me, essentially.” Bernyk attended General Amherst High School where he starred in track and field, winning WECSSAA and SWOSSAA and finishing fifth at OFSAA. He attended the University of Windsor for computer science but local physicians he came in contact with told him he could have a career in medicine so he went that route. After training at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, he went west for further training and experience and worked at the Eisenhower Medical Centre in Palm Springs, California. “My brother ended up working with Lou (Amherstburg Health Care Centre owner Luigi DiPierdomenico) in helping to transition to electronic medical records,” Bernyk explained,

noting he met DiPierdomenico through that. Once Bernyk knew there was an opening for a physician in Amherstburg, it was an easy decision for him to return to his hometown. “Being from this community, I was looking to give back to the place that has given me so much,” said Bernyk. “It was kind of a no-brainer to come back. I’m hoping to be here for a long time. The idea is to lay roots here.” Bernyk is accepting new patients and notes he is trained in the full scale of medicine with the exception of deliveries. “I’m definitely more proceduredriven,” he added, noting he hopes to offer such procedures as mole removals and biopsies in the future. Bernyk was officially welcomed to his new practice by Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “It’s great to have another doctor in RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU the community,” said DiCarlo. “It’s the Dr. Richard Bernyk is welcomed to his new Amherstburg practice by Mayor kind of thing that brings people here Aldo DiCarlo. Mission welcomes community for Christmas dinner By Ron Giofu
Christmas Day at the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission had a new twist in 2019. The mission welcomed The Gathering Church, who held a service prior to the noon meal. The partnership came as a result of a phone call from a representative of the church to the mission. “They called me and wanted to know how they could help the mission,” explained president Tim McAllister. “I have no time to administer the Word because I’ve been cooking. They said they could come and bring their group and their volunteers.” Between those coming for the church service and those attending to share in the meal, the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission was packed for the turkey dinner. McAllister said it was a big crowd and both the church and the mission got to “bless the people” that showed up. “The people are enjoying it,” he said. “Everyone is having a good time.
Everyone is going all out because it is a special day.” McAllister added he was excited to be able to share the day with the community. He pointed out he awoke at 3 a.m. Christmas morning to come to the mission and help prepare the meal, which included six turkeys. A number of volunteers helped serve the turkey dinner as well, including former Essex MP Tracey Ramsey, who came with sons Max and Maliq to assist that day. “I’ve developed friendships with so many people here,” said Ramsey. Ramsey said she was thankful to be able to return and noted that, politics or no politics, she and her family always likes to give back. She added there is a need in the community and “I’m really happy to be here to help out at the Christmas Dinner was served at the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission mission.” again this year. amenities. Councillor Peter Courtney has called for administration to meet with officials from the public school board, noting there was a meeting in November the public board had to explore community partnerships and share facilities with their communities. Courtney wants the town to explore joint use agreements with existing facilities and to further look at partnerships as it relates to the new public high school. He added there hasn’t been any concrete plans shown to town council as of late December and wanted to see what opportunities exist for the town to explore a shared facility with the Greater Essex County District School Board, particularly in the area of exterior amenities. “If it’s not too late, I think it would be worthwhile to see what might be available,” said Courtney. Courtney cited an example of the aquatic centre in Essex, adding he is not trying to take anything away from the Libro Centre master plan that is forthcoming. “We would not be doing our due diligence as a council if we don’t look at all possible scenarios,” said Courtney, adding that includes such things as sporting infrastructure and culinary infrastructure

within the new high school. Courtney added he is aware administration has already had discussion with Greater Essex County District School Board officials but wanted to see if there are options that could be added to a new public high school in Amherstburg. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche didn’t disagree with Courtney, though cautioned against any hope of a pool within the new high school. “We need to explore more partnerships,” said Meloche. Meloche added that in his own discussions with the public school board, they have been cool to any notion about putting a pool within the new high school with the deputy mayor stating it’s “not going to happen.” “They have no appetite for pools,” said Meloche. Courtney indicated it doesn’t necessarily have to be a pool as “it could be anything” including a new track. CAO John Miceli indicated at the mid-December council meeting that nothing had been shown to the town with regard to concrete plans, adding he has had discussions with the Greater Essex County District School Board as it relates to the use of the new school building itself. “What this question expands upon is the outdoor use,” Miceli said of Courtney’s motion. “It’s a good opportunity for us to explore that.” An open house regarding the drawings for the new public high school is this Thursday in the General Amherst High School gymnasium from 6-7 p.m.

Admirals stay busy over the last couple of weeks By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Admirals were busy over the Christmas season including back-to-back home games last weekend. Their most recent game was against the two-time defending PJHL Stobbs Division champion Lakeshore Canadiens. Lakeshore, who are currently in first place, won 3-2 but it was a solid effort by the Admirals, who nearly overcame a three-goal deficit. The Canadiens scored three goals in the first period but the Admirals made it a close game with third period goals from Kolton Couvillon and captain Broden Meloche. “I think the key to this weekend was we wanted to play 120 good minutes. We played 100 minutes,” said Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon. Bortignon said they didn't have a good first period against Lakeshore Sunday night but played well in the second and third periods. He said in five of six periods on the weekend, they allowed fewer than ten shots. In the one period they allowed over ten shots, they also allowed three goals. The Admirals were better offensively, Bortignon believed, adding he also thought they played well defensively. They outshot Lakeshore 23-22. Last Saturday night, the Admirals scored a convincing 6-0 victory over the visiting Blenheim Blades. Luca DiGiovanni, Michael Hatch, Liam Kiewtiz, Michael Ruttinger, Andrew Clark and Kyle Meloche scored for Amherstburg with Aidan Pitre stopping all 16 shots he faced for the shutout. Mitchell Demelo had three assists. The Admirals had 45 shots on goal. “That's a good one,” said Bortignon after Saturday night's game. “It's a good way to start
off the new year.” Saturday night's game marked the return of Cody Schneider from injury, and Bortignon said Schneider brought “energy to the team” both in the dressing room and on the ice. “You see guys feed off of that,” he said. The Admirals limited Blenheim to eight shots over the final two periods though Pitre still had to make timely saves at points. Bortignon said getting over 40 shots and limiting the opponents to under 20 is “always a recipe for success.” He added it was nice to see a resurgence from the offence with six goals. Amherstburg's lineup was also bolstered with the addition of defenseman Sylvano Valente, whom the team picked up over the past week from Essex in a monetary transaction. Bortignon said Valente has championship experience in his days with the 73's and also has experience with Leamington's Jr. B team. Amherstburg downed Wallaceburg 2-1 on “Brave Brock Night” with Demelo and Broden Meloche getting the goals. Bortignon said the Admirals were missing six regular players from their lineup that night. “I thought we did a good job and battled hard,” he said after downing the Thunderhawks.

The local Jr. C team used an overtime goal from Trevor Klee to beat Dresden 3-2, lost in overtime by the same score in Wheatley the next night and dropped a 5-1 decision on home ice to Mooretown Dec. 22. “I don't think the score was indicative of how we played,” Bortignon said of the Mooretown game.
The Admirals were in Essex Tuesday night after this issue of the RTT went to press. They are at Lanspeary Park in Windsor for their annual outdoor game this Saturday at 4 p.m. with the Wallaceburg Thunderhawks being the home team. By Jonathan Martin Young Amherstburg ice skaters spun, slid and danced for an audience late last month. Skate Amherstburg hosted a performance day at the Libro Centre recently, where its skaters showed off the skills and techniques they learned on the ice. The skaters developed their own move sets, put them to music and performed choreographed shows for an audience in the stands. “It just gives the skaters a chance to perform,” explained Danielle Peltier, one of Skate Amherstburg’s coaches. “They’ve been practicing for this
performance since October but many of the skaters have been doing it for years.” Skate Amherstburg presented a similar show in 2018, but Peltier said this year’s event was bigger. “A lot more kids showed up this year,” she stated. “There are more people in the audience and the kids seem more excited, too.” Eighteen solo performers took to the ice in addition to the Starlights synchronized skating team. The performers ranged widely in both age and skill-level, but all seemed to have a good time as they participated in the show. “We’ll definitely by doing it again next year,” Peltier said.

December News from Malden Central Public School Special to the RTT
December has been the culmination of a great start to the 2019-2020 school year at Malden. After a successful soccer season that saw the Malden Girls win the District Championships for the first time in 19 years and our Cross-Country team compete, our volleyball season has ended with success. After winning the Pronger (County) Championships our Senior Boys lost to a strong Dougall team from the City to finish the season as District Runner-ups. Our Girls continued their streak of District Championships with a win over Hugh
Beaton to take the Districts in Volleyball. Congratulations athletes and coaches on a great season. Our Kind Kids Club had a busy month as well. We wrapped up a very successful Clothing Drive for the Amherstburg Mission and underwent a toy drive for local charities as well. For the second year in a row, our students had a successful visit to Season’s Retirement Community in Amherstburg. Members of our Kind Kids club spent time decorating resident doors and visiting with the residents there. Thank you to the staff and residents there for supporting this community outreach initiative.

Blood donor clinic held in memory of Miracle League baseball player By Ron Giofu A Miracle League of Amherstburg player that passed away in the fall was remembered last week thanks to a blood drive in his memory. Canadian Blood Services presented its regularly scheduled blood drive in the Libro Centre’s downstairs community room just before the Christmas holidays but this clinic had an added twist – it was presented in memory of Richard Allard.

“We’re doing a blood drive because Richard needed a lot of blood when he was in the hospital,” said Nancy Fox, Rick’s sister. Fox said that 19 people came out to donate specifically in Rick’s honour. That is on top of the crowd that donated as part of the regularly scheduled blood drive. Fox indicated she even knew of a donation from as far as North Bay who also donated blood in her brother’s memory. “It’s a nice thing to do to give back,” said Fox, adding that eight of the people who donated in Rick’s memory did so for the first time. When a family member is sick, it is appreciated when people give back to help, Fox added. The support since Rick’s passing has been “unbelievable.” “It’s been an overwhelming response,” said Fox. “He was very well liked. Everyone said he was a gentleman.” Canadian Blood Services has been “great” to work with as well, Fox added. “I’m very grateful for the support of the people for giving of their time and blood in Rick’s memory,” she said.
