Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest celebrates its tenth year Ribfest held for first year at the Libro Centre, attendance down due to inclement weather

Ribs were prepared throughout the weekend (bottom right). By Jonathan Martin Amherstburg has been chomping on award-winning ribs for a decade. The Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest celebrated its tenth year last weekend, but its first at the Libro Credit Union Centre. Ann Marie Favot, Ribfest’s chair and Amherstburg Rotary Club’s new president, said the event went well,

but was not without a few growing pains. “This year is our growing year; our learning year,” she said. “I think we need to revisit the layout. We need to make it easier for people to move between the areas.” The weather certainly didn’t help. Both Friday and Saturday started out with heat warnings and ended with downpours.

The rain, paired with the Ribfest’s throngs of hungry patrons, pockmarked the Libro Centre’s lawn with mudpuddles. “There are a few hiccups,” Favot said. “I think people are generally happy, though. I see a lot of smiling faces, and that’s the main thing.” A few of the smiling faces belonged to Amherstburg town councillor Peter Courtney and his two sons,

New-look Amherstburg Community Foundation officially launched, four initiatives announced By Ron Giofu

Members of the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) answer questions during their launch last Wednesday evening (above) while president Richard Peddie speaks to the large crowd (right). Manherz and Linden Crain – is going to be optimistic and positive about the town’s future, Peddie added. “We’re going to be progressive,” he said. Gibb believes the board truly represents the town and is excited to work with the community. “This board is incredibly dynamic,” said Gibb. “I am very proud to be part of this outstanding team which is committed to making Amherstburg the best small town in Ontario but we can’t do it alone.” The ACF has pledges of $150,000 over three years from its board with the aim to raise $250,000 annually for projects within Amherstburg. There are no plans to hire a professional fundraiser, Peddie added. Peddie also highlighted the ACF’s speaker series, which kicks off Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Libro Centre. The first speaker will be urbanist Gil Penalosa, who will speak on “Creating a Vibrant and Healthy Community or Becoming Irrelevant.” That will be followed by a panel discussion Sept. 17 with Cherise Burda on “Does Amherstburg aspire to be the best or is it happy with the status quo?” The third scheduled event in the speaker series will be Dr. Gerald Kutney, who will speak on the climate crisis with a subsequent panel discussion with the topic being “What do you do when science issues a warning but no one listens.” That event will be Nov. 13. Following last Wednesday night’s meeting, Peddie said he was pleased with how things went. “It went off like a 10/10,” the retired Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president/CEO stated.

Actually raising the money will be the real test, he added, but Peddie is convinced the money is there to achieve their fundraising targets. “Good ideas attract money,” said Peddie. “These are good ideas.” Peddie said ACF board members are willing to meet with people, even if they don’t have a lot of money to donate as they could be helpful in other ways. For more information on the ACF, visit www.amherstburgfoundation.org, e-mail info@ amherstburgfoundation.org or call 519-890-1932. The “new” Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) has been launched and is seeking the support of the community. The new-look ACF, led by president Richard Peddie, held its official launch last Wednesday night to a packed house in the Libro Centre’s downstairs community room with four initiatives being announced for the first wave of fundraising. The “Citizens for Carnegie” are seeking $40,000 for a refresh of the Amherstburg Public Library while the town is hoping for $55,000 to complete upgrades to Beaudoin Park in River Canard. The Amherstburg Freedom Museum is looking for $39,000 for a youth mentorship program and speaker series while ERCA would like $75,000 in funding for a four-kilometre cycling and nature trail and wetland at Holiday Beach Conservation Area. Shannon Bailey, a member of the Citizens for Carnegie, outlined the group’s plans to refresh the 106-year-old building with new furniture, interior murals, revamped children and teen areas, literacy toys, an expanded computer hub and upwards of 700 new books. Five of the seven Essex County municipalities have had new libraries built in recent years, said Bailey, but Amherstburg hasn’t seen a lot of new investment in about a decade and the town is being “left behind.” She said she is passing along her love of reading to her children, but noted that libraries can also make good “cooling centres” when the weather is hot. Phil Roberts, director of parks, recreation and culture with the Town of Amherstburg, noted that council allotted $170,000 for Beaudoin Park improvements in the 2019 budget with the extra $55,000 to be used for interactive play areas and trails that aren’t covered by the money from the budget. He said Beaudoin Park has “been sort of forgotten” and that “it really has potential to be part of the community’s core.” Beaudoin Park was highly prioritized in the Parks Master Plan, Roberts added, with the town’s funding to be used towards play structures and “non-structured play” areas. “Parks will increase the health of the community overall,” said Roberts. Amherstburg Freedom Museum president Monty Logan said the speaker series and youth mentorship programs were initiatives that came out of the Freedom Summit that the museum held in 2017. “Once again, our world is experiencing a significant rise in intolerance,” said Logan. “Freedom is being challenged daily. We still have more work to do.” As part of the speaker series, Logan said former NBA coach of the year and current Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey will kick it off. ERCA general manager Richard Wyma said investments such as outdoor classrooms, natural play areas and the eco-friendly washroom are some of the enhancements they have made in recent years and that there are agricultural and other lands that have not been developed yet. The trail would go around the site. Consultation and design are anticipated this summer and fall with wetland construction being in the winter. The track would be constructed after that using materials from the wetland construction with final enhancements being in the spring. “The best time for wetland construction is in winter,” said Wyma. Peddie said the new ACF will “make Amherstburg a great place to visit and make it an even better place to live.” The former ACF was “a little sleepy,” he added, and “we took the dust off of it.” “There was nothing wrong with it,” he added. The new ACF – which features Chris Gibb as vice president, Lori Wightman as administrative director, David Beneteau as treasurer and directors Dan Gemus, Jen Desjardins-Grondin, Michelle Stein, Tom

www.rivertowntimes.com Linda King (seated, centre) is surrounded by her family on her last day of work at Richmond Terrace Long-Term Care Facility. She retired after over 45 years of service in the kitchen.

Long-time Richmond Terrace employee says farewell By Ron Giofu After over 45 years on the job, Linda King has bid farewell to Richmond Terrace Long-Term Care Facility. King’s last day on the job was June 30 but her retirement doesn’t officially start until the end of July due to her having to use up accumulated sick time and vacation days. She began in 1973 and has enjoyed it there ever since. “This has been the best 45-plus years,” said King. “I’ve met so many interesting people and co-workers. It’s a great place to work.” King worked in the kitchen, with her roles predominantly being as a cook and a server. Many changes have taken place at Richmond Terrace in the last four-and-a-half decades, she noted. “When I first started, it used to be an old school. Then, I saw three additions put on since. I’ve seen a lot of changes,” said King. King added she enjoyed working with the residents and her fellow co-workers but believes it was time to go. “I’ll be 65 in July,” she said. “It’s time.” Her last day saw her family and fellow co-workers surprise her when her shift was over. King usually left out of a side door, but was asked to come out the main entrance that final Sunday afternoon. When she arrived at the main entrance, she was greeted by the large crowd of well-wishers who each gave her a flower to thank her for her years of service. “It was a big surprise to me,” said King. “I had no idea that was coming.” A farewell party was held for her at Riccardo’s Italian Restaurant last Wednesday afternoon and while she will miss her co-workers, King said she will also miss the residents. “It was hard to say goodbye to them,” said King. “You get so attached to them.” As for her retirement plans, King said she plans on working in her yard, going on small trips and just enjoying life. “It’s going to be a big change for me,” she added.

“Remembering Motown” raises over $6,000 for Belle Vue Renee King-Jackson and her Fabulous Foursome amazed the packed house at The Artisan Grill at the recent “Remembering Motown” event for the Belle Vue Conservancy. Conservancy president Shirley Curson-Prue said there were rave reviews on the venue and food as well which was themed to fit the Motown era. Preliminary reports indicate over $6,000 was raised for the Belle Vue that evening. The conservancy was also able to introduce the new Belle Vue painting by Peter Rindlisbacher and took orders for copies, which will be delivered as soon as they arrive, said Curson-Prue.

Community Living Essex County launches “As Safe As Possible” “There’s nothing out there for people with intellectual disabilities,” said Chase. “The reason we are here is for prevention.” The aim of ASAP is to “empower people with an intellectual disability to identify crimes of exploitation and human trafficking to avoid victimization.” The curriculum for those with intellectual disabilities helps them understand the issue better. “We are unpacking these terms for people so it is easier for them to understand,” he said. CLEC managers received a report from law enforcement on human trafficking in 2017 and began pursuing the matter further, eventually landing a $70,000 grant from the Ministry of the Solicitor General. “We are able to understand what sex trafficking is and bring it out into the open,” said self-advocate and ASAP committee member Jessica Martin. “Getting more information never hurts.” “I think it’s really important that we recognize people can be exploited, abused and tricked, deceived or forced

By Ron Giofu A local developmental services agency is doing its part in the fight against human trafficking. Community Living Essex County (CLEC) has launched “As Safe As Possible” (ASAP) with the program being developed with the aid of Legal Assistance of Windsor (LAW), the Ontario Provincial Police and the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society. “ASAP draws upon the vast expertise of our partners,” noted CLEC executive director Karen Bolger. Brandon Chase, project manager with CLEC, said they took a survey of people supported as well as with other service providers and received 100 responses. ASAP will see implementation of innovative, flexible, plain language training modules for both people with an intellectual disability and professionals in the justice system. A groundbreaking component of this project will be the participation of people with an intellectual disability who have experience in each training module, promoting greater impact and peer to peer learning.

Brandon Chase, project manager with Community LIving Essex County, and a panel of experts, outlines the agency’s new “ASAP” program. into lots of different industries,” said Shelley Gilbert, co-ordinator of social work services with LAW. “We’re not only working with people who are put in the sex industry.” Lee Ann Dupuis, director of supports for the south area with CLEC, told the panel during the Q&A portion of the

launch that people with intellectual disabilities can be preyed upon so it is important to teach them what a good relationship actually looks like. A trailer for the ASAP program can be viewed through CLEC’s social media channels including Facebook and Twitter.

Two road projects underway, both expected to last until September Walnut Dr. and a portion of Knobb Hill Dr. to be impacted most of the summer By Ron Giofu The Town of Amherstburg has stated that a pair of infrastructure projects are ongoing, with both expected to impact a pair of roads for about two months. The town states Knobb Hill Dr. will be closed to all through traffic between Welsh Ave. and Whelan Ave. to facilitate watermain installation, culvert replacement and road reconstruction. This closure is expected to last until September. No through traffic will be allowed, the town states, but Knobb Hill Dr. residents will be allowed access to their residences via Whelan Dr. but delays should be expected. The Knobb Hill Dr. project is being funded by the developer as part of the Kingsbridge subdivision.

First hires made by Amherstburg nurse practitioner-led clinic By Ron Giofu While there is still work to do, plans are in motion before the opening of the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-led Clinic (ECNPLC) in Amherstburg. Renovations and construction are ongoing at the former St. Bernard School with the NP clinic to be located in a wing of the Richmond St. building. Pauline Gemmell, executive director with the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-led Clinic, confirmed there have been three hires made for the clinic as Heather Raymond has been hired as a nurse practitioner (NP) while Carrie White will be a nurse at the new site. Raymond is from McGregor while White is from Amherstburg. “They’re excited to be starting at the clinic,” said Gemmell. “Carrie is already with us. She is very familiar with how an NP clinic functions.” Raymond will join the Windsor clinic until the Amherstburg clinic is opened, though Gemmell stated she will also be doing some work in the Amherstburg

community including sessions with community groups. A third person, Michel Boudreau, was confirmed Tuesday morning to be hired as an NP. “Michel is bilingual and looking forward to providing primary health care to the residents of Amherstburg,” said Gemmell. Gemmell added that clinical director Kate Bolohan will meet with team members, creating a plan and getting things ready in Amherstburg. Many people have been asking about the NP clinic and who is coming, Gemmell added, but noted there is a lot of work left to do at the site. She is hoping to be in the new Amherstburg site by mid to late-August with a specific target date being Aug. 26 as that is when training is planned for. “Everything has been ordered,” she added. “We’re waiting for the go-ahead to have things delivered.” Setting up a new NP clinic always takes a while, Gemmell continued, and praised the Town of

Amherstburg for its efforts. “This is an exciting move for us,” she said. “It’s really exciting to be able to do this. We’re so happy to be able to bring this to Amherstburg. The town has been excellent to work with. (CAO) John Miceli has been so easy to work with.” Gemmell added Dawn Morencie, the executive assistant to both Miceli and Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, has also been very helpful to deal with. “I think everyone has been really great,” said Gemmell. “I think everyone is looking forward to this.” Out of 26 NP clinics in Ontario, only three were successful in getting provincial funding for their expansion with the ECNPLC being one of them. The others were in North Bay and Sudbury, said Gemmell. “We’re really proud of that,” she said. New photography exhibit open at the Park House Museum Exhibit runs through September 26 The summer exhibit at the Park House Museum is now open. “The History of Photography – Amherstburg Then & Now” runs on the second floor of the museum through Sept. 26. Curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak stated it was always her intention to do a photography exhibit and that a lot of research came when creating past exhibits. Photographs come from the Park House’s collection, with different styles of cameras also on display. The photographs cover different points in time and different subject matters, such as comparing what certain buildings looked like in the past and comparing it to what it looks like now. “I tried to pick from different eras,” Pouget-Papak explained. “I had a lot of the research done already.” Pouget-Papak added that other photographs are available upon request. The Park House Museum will also steer interested people to the Marsh Historical Collection as the latter also has a “phenomenal photo collection.” Work on the exhibit was also done by Olivia D’Alimonte, a summer student and history major at

“A Day in Outlander”

The Park House Museum recently presented “A Day in Outlander” with crowds coming through to see the activities and events based on the Outlander novel series. There were tinsmithing demonstrations, storytelling, cooking demonstrations, teas and more during the event.

Ramsey said they were talking about summer plans and they “thought it would be nice to have a summer barbecue.” Noting they always enjoy coming to the mission, Ramsey said they wanted to give back to not only those who need the mission, but the volunteers that help run it as well. “It’s very important for me to be here,” she said, noting the mission helps makes lives better. Connecting with residents and

helping with their issues was another purpose of the visit, as Ramsey said sometimes people are hesitant to contact her office with their problems. “I think it’s a great way to touch base this summer,” she said of the barbecue. Ramsey said “it’s like a family” at the mission and thanked the volunteers for allowing her and her team to come. Mission president Tim McAllister thanked Ramsey for coming and said it was the Essex MP’s office that reached out. He also thanked the community

Councillor Michael Prue brought greetings as well, stating the mission brings value to the community and that without it, “the town would be a much poorer place.” He said people get to socialize and get a good meal at the mission and thanked the volunteers for their efforts. “Thank you for all of the great work you do,” said Prue.

Local soccer player returns from France with valuable experience By Ron Giofu It was the trip of a lifetime for a 12-year-old soccer player, but she hopes it won’t be the last. Aleena Zdziarski has returned from France where she played for Superclubs International as well as training with the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) Soccer Club. The local goalkeeper plays for the U12 boys Amherstburg Fusion team and also for the girls 2007 Tecumseh Nationals team. The Superclubs International team is based out of Kansas City, explained Zdziarski’s mother Jennifer Grant, and that they needed a goalie and had contacts through the Tecumseh program. From there, the 12-day trip to France was set up. “It was a lot of fun,” said Zdziarski. “I met a lot of new players. They have a lot of talented players. It was a completely different style of play than in Canada.” Zdziarski played in four games, including two against older age groups, and even got to see women’s World Cup soccer action with her mom. She added she was thrilled to get the opportunity to go to France. “I was really excited,” she said. “I kind of cried I was so excited. I told my entire family and everyone freaked out.” Zdziarski admitted it was tricky at first because of the different style of play but she adapted. She worked on her technical skills and headers as well as improving on her goal kicks and other aspects of her game. “It’s a lot easier to know what to do now,” she said, adding she is no longer afraid to challenge shooters because of her new skills. In all, about 258 people went to France and she was the only Canadian. They saw World Cup games between the eventual champion United States team and Sweden as well as seeing the Americans again when they went up against Chile. Zdziarski is also bilingual, which came in handy

Aleena Zdziarski travelled to France recently to compete with Superclubs International. One of the teams she plays for locally is the Amherstburg Fusion U12 boys team, while she also competes with a girls team in Tecumseh.

as she helped translate for her coaches while she was in France. Zdziarski said the trip to France was a great opportunity for her and it allows her to further pursue her dream of playing soccer in university and eventually play in the Olympics and World Cup herself. “Hard work pays off. If I keep working hard, I hope to go to the Olympics and the World Cup,” she added.

Now that they are home, Zdziarski’s teams are glad to see her back. “She had to miss three Fusion games,” added Grant. “They are pretty happy to have her back too.” Zdziarski enjoys being a goalkeeper but noted her mother wasn’t always thrilled about it. “My mom thought I was nuts because soccer balls kept getting shot at my face,” she said.

Sr. Cardinals stay busy on the diamond By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team picked up another win in the 2019 Essex County Senior League season last Wednesday night. The Cardinals downed the visiting Essex Diamondbacks 6-1 at the Libro Centre. Amherstburg took control of the game early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the third inning. Essex scored once in the fourth and that was it for scoring on both sides, though the Cardinals threatened in their half of the fourth when they loaded the bases with no one out only to see the next three batters strike out. It was the first game of the season for Kyle Lepine, but it was also his first game in five years. He joined the team after being encouraged by brother Cole and cousins Brad, Mitch and Matt. “They’ve been bugging me to get out here and it’s my first game out,” he said. “It seemed to go pretty well tonight.” Kyle said he knows the senior Cardinals have a good team and he is glad to be part of it. He noted he played a lot against some of the current Cards growing up so he knows many of them. “It’s going to be a good team and we’ve got a lot of pitching,” he said. The Cardinals record after that game was 7-3. Their game Sunday in Woodslee ended up being postponed. They were in Tecumseh Tuesday night after this issue went to press. The Cardinals defeated the Woodslee Orioles Jr. team 7-4 at the Libro Centre June 26. The game was tied at one heading into the bottom of the third inning when Cole Lepine’s two-run single put the home team up 3-1. The lead grew to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Mac Ouellette. The Cardinals went up 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth with Nick Price getting an RBI single followed by Brady Levack’s two-run triple to the

right-centre field gap. Amherstburg would need all of those sixth inning runs as Woodslee would rally for three in the top of the seventh but could get no closer. “We rallied in the sixth inning with clutch hitting and that’s what helped us pull through in the seventh,” said Levack. Levack stated he was seeing the ball well last Wednesday night. “He threw me a first pitch curveball. He came back with a fastball and I lined it into the right-centre field gap,” said Levack. Levack joked: “I used a teammate’s bat so I used all of his luck up.” The senior Cardinals are playing solid baseball, he added, and “our bats are finally waking up.” Levack said they play good defense and they are starting to put some wins on the board. The Cardinals are scheduled to be at home tonight (Wednesday) versus the Harrow Blues at 7:30 p.m. They are also scheduled to be in Essex for a 1 p.m. game against the Yellowjackets this Sunday before returning to the Libro Centre next Wednesday for a rematch with the Yellowjackets.

Royal LePage Binder golf tourney raises funds for Hiatus House

Patrick Tremblay, Frank Binder, Mark Hawg and Louis Jahn get ready to tee off last Thursday as part of the Royal LePage golf tournament at Pointe West Golf Club in Amherstburg. By Ron Giofu

e

About 140 golfers hit the links at Pointe West Golf Club last Thursday all to help the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. “This is the fifteenth year, explained Royal LePage Binder owner Frank Binder. “This is for women’s shelters across the country. Over the last number of years, we’ve raised $450,000. It’s an excellent cause.

Locally, the funds will benefit Hiatus House in Windsor. Michelle Lewis, marketing director with Royal LePage Binder Real Estate, noted 100 per cent of the funding from the golf tournament will go there. Golfers came not only from around the area, but from well outside of it as well, Lewis added. “They came from as far as London as well as all around Windsor-Essex, she said. “Last year, we raised over $30,0000 and this year, we’re shooting for the same or better. A final number from this year’s tournament was not available as of press time. Lewis credits the rising total over the years to not only the golfers, but the sponsors and donors as well. “We have an early bird registration and it gets sold out within a day, she said. “We have sponsors coming to us to take part. It’s grown in popularity. It’s a hot ticket. Genevieve Isshak, clinical director of residential and outreach services with Hiatus House, said proceeds from the tournament are always welcome. “Royal LePage Binder has always been a tremendous supporter. They have helped us for several years raise money for the playground, she said. “Without them, we wouldn’t have a state-of-the-art playground. Isshak pointed out that Hiatus House offers emergency shelter for abused women and children and the playground has provided a “tremendous difference for the children at the shelter. “All of their real estate agents help us in terms of their contributions, she added.

The bride’s mother received the guests dressed in a midnight blue gown with matching accessories and a pink rose corsage. She was assisted by the bridegroom’s mother wearing a grey and pink floral gown with pink accessories and a corsage of ivory roses. Following a honeymoon to be spent in Montreal, the couple will reside in Long Sault.

10th anniversary of Ribfest presented at the Libro Centre

Continued from Page 1

The rain, paired with the Ribfest’s throngs of hungry patrons, pockmarked the Libro Centre’s lawn with mudpuddles. “There are a few hiccups, Favot said. “I think people are generally happy, though. I see a lot of smiling faces, and that’s the main thing. A few of the smiling faces belonged to Amherstburg town councillor Peter Courtney and his two sons, Zack

and Josh. The Courtneys attend the Ribfest every year, Peter said. “We love it. It’s a great festival, he told the RTT. “As a councillor, I wanted to come out to see how it’s going at the new location this year. These grounds weren’t originally designed for a festival of this size, but that will be addressed in the upcoming Libro master plan. In addition to ribs, there were a number

of food and dry goods vendors, live entertainment throughout the weekend, a motorcycle show, an autograph session with Vancouver Canucks goalie (and Amherstburg native) Michael DiPietro as well as other activities. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche pointed out the Rotary Club does great work within the community with the aid of financial support gained through donations and participation in events like Ribfest.

Essex MP Tracey Ramsey was also on hand to congratulate the Ribfest on its tenth anniversary and presented Favot with a certificate to mark the occasion. Early attendance estimates were between 7,000-10,000 for the three days, down from last year due to the inclement weather. Dinosaur BBQ won top spot for ribs and sauce from the judges with Ribs Royale the winners in both categories in the people’s choice vote.
