Ed Jovanovski Golf Classic raises roughly $70,000

By Ron Giofu After its first two years, the Ed Jovanovski Charity Golf Classic raised about $50,000 each year in the fight against breast cancer.

In its third year, the tournament’s namesake and the organizing

committee topped themselves by raising $70,000.

Approximately $60,000 will be donated to breast cancer while the Windsor Minor Hockey Association will receive the rest.

The third annual Ed Jovanovski Golf Classic was last Friday at Pointe

West Golf Club in Amherstburg. Scott Elliott, a member of the organizing committee and co-owner of one of the major sponsors Amherstburg Buick GMC with fellow committee member Mike Bezzoubkin, said they want to improve upon the $100,000 figure they raised in the tournament’s first two

years.

Elliott added that a donation will also be made to the Windsor Minor Hockey Association, where Jovanovski played as a youth before advancing to the Windsor Spitfires and eventually the National Hockey League.

Town pre-commits 2020 funds to live streaming meetings

By Ron Giofu Town council is going ahead with the live streaming of council meetings, going as far as pre-committing money in the 2020 budget to do so.

The town has pre-committed $23,725 plus HST to acquire the necessary equipment to broadcast their meetings via the internet. Administration had recommended waiting until November when 2020 budget deliberations are scheduled to get underway but Councillor Patricia Simone wanted to go ahead with it earlier as “it adds an extra layer of accountability”

to the town and council members.

The system council will use will come from the firm eScribe, the same outfit that electronically manages council agendas and other online records.

“Currently, the town records audio of all council meetings through a digital recorder. These recordings assist with ensuring the accuracy, accountability and documentation of motions in council minutes. The set-up time required for these recordings is minimal for staff prior to each meeting. These recordings are also posted on the town’s website as another way of increasing the town’s commitment

to accountability and transparency,” wrote clerk Paula Parker in her report to council.

Councillor Peter Courtney hoped for reduced costs if other municipalities were to choose the same firm and start live streaming meetings. The e-Scribe option includes all equipment and resources required to record, stream, and produce the meeting. Video can be viewed live and archived from eScribe’s servers through an embedded link from the Town’s website with all other processing and storage requirements are handled through eScribes’s servers, Parker’s report states.

The camera feed would be manually changed by a staff member attending the meeting.

A cheaper option, roughly $16,760, was rejected as was a more expensive $40,650 option. Councillor Donald McArthur noted the less expensive option didn’t meet accessibility needs due to a lack of closed captioning while the town didn’t need “the bells and whistles” the more expensive option had including panning and close-ups.

“I agree with Pat 100 per cent for the need for live streaming,” said McArthur.

Road several years ago, the next stretch of road is now going to be upgraded.

That stretch is between Concession 2 North/Thomas Road and Concession 3 North.

That stretch of roadway had been identified as the number one need according to the town’s roads needs

study.

Town council awarded the tender to Coco Paving Inc. at a total cost of $740,378, which is $59,622 under the engineer’s estimate of $800,000.

The project will see pulverization of the existing asphalt surface, shoulder improvements and new asphalt surface.

The town’s consulting engineer for this project is Hrycay Consulting Engineers Inc., stated a report from manager of engineering Todd Hewitt.

Hewitt also told the River Town Times that a 0.5 meter paved shoulder will be placed on the reconstructed roadway.

“Sinkie’s Striders” hitting the streets to battle Parkinson’s

By Ron Giofu A local man will be heading up a group known as “Sinkie’s Striders” next month all to raise money and awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Robert Sinclair, a 71-year-old Amherstburg resident, his 20-year-old grandson Ryley Demers, Demers’ fiancée Lexi Robert and Sinclair’s daughter Robin will be leading “Sinkie’s Striders” on a roughly 5K walk through the streets of town Aug. 24. Demers is assisting with planning with Robert and Robin assisting with fundraising but other friends are also helping with fundraising. That is prior to the Sept. 8 Parkinson’s Canada “Super Walk” in Windsor, which Sinclair said he is unable to attend this year. Sinclair not only hopes to raise money and awareness this year, but also hopes a “Super Walk” can be staged in Amherstburg in the future as well.

Sinclair said he was aware of people with Parkinson’s Disease, including Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali, and thought about entering the “Super Walk” last year but was too late.

“It’s been on my mind for about a year,” he explained.

“I contacted Parkinson’s and said I can’t get to the Windsor walk (this year) so can I do my own walk in my

own town?”

While Sinclair has a personal goal of raising $1,000, he pointed out he also wants to raise awareness of the disease. He also wants to promote Amherstburg to Parkinson’s Canada as a possible venue to host a “Super Walk” in the southern portion of Essex County.

“I would like to see them do one here,” said Sinclair.

Sinclair said he is fundraising in advance of the Aug. 24 walk and will not be accepting during the walk. He said people can e-mail him at tml13c67@hotmail.com for information or to donate to his team or to donate simply by going to www.parkinson.ca.

“I’d like to see donations come to our team but if they want to donate to Parkinson’s Canada, that’s fine with me,” he said.

The small team will be walking on sidewalks and will not be on the street, he added.

Sinclair pointed out he has a half-century of volunteer experience and is also doing the walk as a way to continue to give back. That trend of volunteerism has run through his family, noting his granddaughter Addyson Walker is one of two Anderdon Public School students (along with Darragh Aston) hoping to curtail local municipalities and school boards’ use of single-use plastics.

Parkinson’s Disease is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly impacts the motor system. As the disease worsens, non-motor symptoms become more common, including shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking. The cause of the disease is unknown, but is believed to involve both genetic and environmental factors. As of now, there is no cure for Parkinson’s Disease.

Roughly 6.2 million people around the world are living with Parkinson’s Disease and 25 people per day in Canada are diagnosed with it.

By Ron Giofu The 29th annual Community Living Essex County golf tournament hit the links last Thursday, with it being even more popular than a year ago.

The tournament was held at Sutton Creek Golf Club in McGregor, and while the exact total of what was raised has yet to be tabulated, it is hoped that it will at least match the $23,000 that was raised in 2018.

“It’s going very well,” said Tony DeSantis, manager of community relations and resource development with Community Living Essex County (CLEC). “We have 132 golfers, up from the 108 we had last year.”

DeSantis said he was unsure of why the total increased, but noted they do a lot of networking and are active in the community. They have numerous sponsorships, with sponsors and donors coming in from across Essex County.

He noted the tournament is successful because sponsors and golfers believe in what CLEC does with many having some sort of connection with the agency.

“It’s one of the longest-running golf fundraisers in Essex County,” said DeSantis. “The (sponsorship) signage is a reflection of businesses from across Essex County. I think we’ve got a really nice formula.”

Community Living Essex County also awards the “Municipal Cup” to the Essex County municipality whose team had the lowest score. Recent years have seen it be a battle between LaSalle and Leamington for the top spot with LaSalle winning it this year. Amherstburg, Essex

and Kingsville were also represented in the 2019 tournament.

“The municipalities always lend their support to this event,” said DeSantis.

“We always appreciate it. We do business in their communities.”

DeSantis noted that CLEC uses municipal facilities, have people they support hired by municipalities, serve on accessibility committees and partners in other ways as well.

The County Optical was opened last Saturday morning in a ribbon cutting ceremony which included seeing Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and Councillor Patricia Simone in attendance. Owners Steven and Rachel Hayes, along with their children Remington and Delaney, were also on hand to celebrate.

“It’s been well received,” said Steven, a registered optician. “People like it. It’s an affordable option to what Amherstburg is already offering.”

The County Optical opened June 1 and Steven said

they are trying to keep their glasses, frames and other services affordable. Among the other services offered included performing adjustments to glasses and fitting contact lenses.

The new business is located within the Queen Charlotte residential and commercial development, found at 274 Dalhousie St. The County Optical occupies unit 106.

“It’s central, it’s beautiful and it’s a great location,” said Steven. “We live here. We’re a part of the community. It’s a big bonus for us.”

Brentwood Recovery Home opens four transitional rooms

By Ron Giofu Brentwood Recovery Home is taking another step to assist those from Windsor-Essex County who recovering from alcohol and drug abuse.

Brentwood unveiled four new on-site transitional housing units last Wednesday morning. All four rooms are double-occupancy for those who are going through the program at Brentwood but not ready yet to either return home to their families or to find their own home.

Cheryl Chaney, chair of the board at Brentwood, said they were excited to launch the new rooms and plan to create many more.

“We know there isn’t enough housing out there,” she said.

Chaney said she knew what it was like to go through the program at Brentwood and the transitional rooms will help men and women have a reliable place to stay as they look for permanent housing, find jobs, go to school or repair damaged relationships at home.

“It’s the step forward they need without having to step away,” she said.

The rooms are also a way to provide additional fellowship to those who are graduating from Brentwood’s program.

Mark Lennox, director of development at Brentwood Recovery Home, said the transitional units said they don’t want to see graduates of the program become homeless and they want to ease the transition back into home and work lives by giving

them a safe place to stay while they rebuild their lives with new jobs and homes.

“It gives our graduates a chance to continue with the program,” he said. “They don’t have to pick the first dingy basement that comes along to live in.”

According to a press release sent out by Lennox: “Our on-site transitional housing is in response to what we are hearing from our new graduates who are experiencing increasingly dire results in their search for appropriate housing.”

“There is a shortage of affordable housing in Windsor-Essex, currently there are 4,500 people waiting for social housing in Windsor alone. Couple this with affordable rental apartments having a vacancy rate of less than two per cent and sky-rocketing rents, we have a crisis in the making.”

Lennox noted that graduation from Brentwood’s program “is a critical time on the road to sobriety.

It is not the time to be homeless. Often, without continuing housing supports, our graduates (especially our young graduates) end up homeless and that can lead back into the life of addiction.

The Brentwood Board saw the need to do whatever we can to increase the odds for our new graduates to become free of addiction and reintegrating into our community while on the path of long-term abstinence.”

The long-term goal is to expand from four transitional rooms to 20 transitional rooms, he added.

Each room costs roughly $10,000 to renovate with one such donation coming from Ed and Odra Riedl.

The couple has their own ties to Brentwood and made a $10,000 donation to help renovate a room and they hope others feel inspired to do likewise.

David Richardson, a Brentwood alumni, believes the transitional rooms will make a big difference to a lot of people. He indicated many will achieve stability and will now be able to move forward from there.

There are more than 100 people in Brentwood’s program, with the aim to have graduates be able to move on within three months. Graduates will pay about $400 per month to stay in one of the rooms.

Amherstburg students among those who return from Camp Brombal

By Ron Giofu Approximately 41 students were sent to Camp Brombal last week thanks to the Windsor Police Service, with seven of them being from Amherstburg.

Local students included Parker Kaldeway and Alexander Bush from Malden Central Public School, Kaden Meloche and Joshua Bezdan from St. Joseph School, Joey Naccarato and Tori Holmes of Amherstburg Public School and Andrew Horan from Stella Maris

School.

Const. Fred Adair, community services officer with the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment, said it was the first year Amherstburg students were involved due to the town entering into contract policing with Windsor that began Jan. 1.

“Because we became part of the Windsor Police Service, Amherstburg students are a part of this,” said Adair. “We’re active and a part of it.

We’ve selected the kids through the

VIP (values, influences and peers) program.”

Sgt. Steve Betteridge, public information officer with Windsor police, said the students were allowed to see officers as regular people, in regular clothes and work with them in a one-on-one environment. Activities included archery, movies, games, swimming, bird watching, horseback riding and more.

Upon their return, students received a new bicycle, bike lock, helmet and a backpack full of school supplies.

“It is a wonderful experience,” said Betteridge. “The feedback from our police officers is tremendous. They get to have one-on-one relationships with the kids.”

It was the first time away from home for many of the students, Betteridge added, and that they were chosen due to essays written as part of their Grade 6 VIP lessons.

“It gives everyone a fabulous camping experience,” he said.

Betteridge noted there “is a tremendous amount of corporate support” for Camp Brombal and that is what makes it possible.

“It is a tremendous community effort led by the Windsor Police Service and its community services branch,” he said.

Students take what they learn in VIP and carry it with them through their remaining elementary school years and into high school, Betteridge stated.

“They are familiar with the police officers and what they do,” he said.

Const. Bianca Sims, who was one of the officers that accompanied the students to Camp Brombal, said the students were active.

“The past four days have been very busy,” said Sims. “It’s been quite an adventure the last four days.”

Goals included having the students work as a team and make friends, said Sims.

Camp Brombal is presented on the site of Camp Cedarwin in Kingsville.

Iconic town landmark has been sold

By Haley Rose For the last 14 years the rustic knotty pine walls and decoy ducks have been the focal points when you walk through the doors of Ducks on the Roof.

The charming, cozy feeling didn’t happen overnight though.

When Pat and Grant Pottle purchased the property back in 2005 it was very rundown, Pat explained.

She explained after purchasing the couple along with their friends and family worked countless hours for four months to restore it. The outside of the building as well as the inside - the dining room, kitchen, walk in fridge and cooking equipment were added and updated.

She said they wanted to restore it back to its original state and make it a place where anyone who walked through the door felt at home.

Pat and Grant Pottle have been the seventh and longest owners of the building. The couple recently decided this would be their last year in business and they are retiring.

“To this day we have no negative thoughts towards owning the restaurant all these years. My husband and I are very proud to say we have succeeded in our years of owning Ducks on the Roof,” smiled Pat. Pat herself has over 42 years of experience in the

restaurant business. Her husband, Grant, has been a culinary chef for the past ten years. With their shared experience and expertise they made it a point to pride their business in using local quality meats and produce that accompany their high standards of excellence for their guests.

Over the years Ducks on the Roof has been known for the themed events such as murder mystery dinners, Royal Princess’ Gala luncheons, wine dinners, holiday brunches and weddings.

Pat explained that while there was many ups and downs over the years they were able to make it through one of the biggest recessions during her lifetime and for that she is extremely proud.

“The restaurant was my dream and my husband allowed me to experience that. With all the lessons learnt it has taught my family to never give up on your dreams.”

The couple plans to enjoy retirement by spending time with their family - especially their grandchildren and are hoping to travel.

Pat and Grant would like to thank the community for all the support over the years. Having customers tell them what a wonderful job they have done and how proud they are of the couple has been their driving force for many years, explained Pat. “We feel the place needs new, energetic owners to carry it to the next stage. With the economy on the rise we think this is a great new opportunity for the next lucky owners,” said Pat. Woofa-Roo Pet Festival returns to Libro Centre this weekend

By Ron Giofu Pets and their people will be coming to the Libro Centre again this weekend thanks to the return of the Woofa-Roo Pet Festival.

The 2019 festival will be held July 20-21 from 9:30 a.m.5:30 p.m. each day. Festival director/founder Lorene Clayton said they have a full slate of events scheduled over the two days.

“We have an exciting line up of ‘crazy fun’ events this year with our typical dock diving, dog agility, lure coursing, dog races, Windsor police K-9 demonstrations and charity contests,” said Clayton. “Our testing event from last year will be held again on Saturday only – (those are the) Sterling Canine Citizen Awards. This award validates a dog and owner’s training and discipline with 12 successfully completed steps. We are still accepting pre-registrations or people can try their luck at the festival if there is still room. The registration and 12 steps are listed on our website.”

Clayton added the parrots and ponies are back this year along with face painting and pet friendly food courts both indoors and out.

“We have more than 70 exhibitors and booths were sold out earlier than normal this year,” she added.

Clayton stated new this year is their “Heel To Music

Dog Dancing Routines and Dog Parkour” to the Game of Thrones theme. The Sport Dog Training Center will be coming to Amherstburg from the Simcoe area and will bring their crew of incredibly trained dogs to perform four shows over the weekend.

“It’s another high energy ‘crazy fun’ event that we are very excited to present,” she said.

Along with the dog dancing, Clayton stated they have live musical entertainment on our outdoor stage in the food court featuring music from Martene Clayton, Adam Butcher and students from the Academy of Music and Kerri Brown Vocal Studio.

“Proceeds from our events benefit our six charities and rescues. We estimate that we’ve helped them raise over $40,000 over the last several years,” said Clayton.

“But more importantly, their exposure at our festival has enabled them to recruit new volunteers, secure more supplies and initiate dozens and dozens of adoptions.

There are no sales or adoptions at Woofa-Roo as we discourage impulse decisions to a very serious commitment of owning a pet.”

Clayton noted the silent auction is always very popular and they encourage people to check it out as bidding always starts at 1/3 the cost of the item’s value.

“There are some great deals to be had!” she said.

There is no immediate need for volunteers, Clayton

added, but that doesn’t mean people still can’t elect to help out if they like.

“Our volunteer recruitment has been incredible.

Lauren Olson, our volunteer coordinator, is very pleased with the number of people willing to work this year,” stated Clayton. “While we have hit our target number of volunteers, we will be accepting volunteers through our online registration.”

Clayton described the Woofa-Roo Pet Festival as “a social event for animal lovers. You don’t need to own a dog or bring your dog to enjoy our event. You just need to relax and enjoy the common bond that bring animal lovers together. It’s all about the animals.”

There will be options to beat the heat including misting tents, hydration stations and sprinkler hoses for the outdoor portion of the festival, with Clayton pointing out there is also things to do inside the Libro Centre as well.

“We do welcome well behaved dogs to our festival but encourage people to read our pet policy. If your dog is not comfortable in crowds, please leave them home and enjoy the festival without concern for your beloved pet,” she said.

Admission is $5 per person, with children aged five and under being free.

The statement, sent out last Wednesday, added: “There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our staff, volunteers and farming partners and we fully support the Ministry of Labour in its investigation into this incident. Out of respect for the process and for the family, we will not be providing any further information at this time.”

The statement was sent by WETRA executive director Becky Mills.

Ministry of Labour spokesperson Janet Deline originally stated last Thursday that “(a)s for next steps, Ministry of Labour’s investigation process may include examination of the incident location and any equipment involved. Inspectors may interview witnesses such as co-workers, supervisors and anyone else the inspector believes might have relevant information. Inspectors may also request the assistance from other professional staff of the

ministry such as engineers or other specialists. I do want to note that the length of investigations will depend on the complexities of the case.”

However, later in the day Thursday, Deline stated the investigation would not proceed.

Ministry of Labour no longer investigating tragic accident

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has announced it is no longer investigating a death at a local riding facility.

A 27-year-old Amherstburg man succumbed to his injuries following an accident at the Windsor-Essex Therapeutic Riding Association (WETRA) Tuesday night.

The man was found under the rear tire of a hay baler.

According to a press release sent out by WETRA, it states the organization was “heartbroken by the tragic event that occurred (Tuesday) night during the hay harvest, which resulted in the fatality of one of our farming partners. We are saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies go out to the family, the WETRA team and the farming community.”

“Deadhead Party” helps keep the rhododendrons maintained

By Jonathan Martin The rhododendrons at King’s Navy Yard Park are looking a lot less brown this week after around 15 volunteers spent a recent steamy Saturday morning unheading them.

Liz Morneau, who has been tending to Amherstburg’s rhododendrons with the Amherstburg Rhododendron Committee (ARC) for more than 30 years, headed the “deadheading party” and the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society provided the manpower. Amherstburg town councillor Don McArthur strummed away the heat on his acoustic guitar and Waterfront Ice Cream Parlour cooled the gardeners with a batch of donated ice cream.

Navy Yard Park has “easily more than 50” varieties of rhododendrons in its gardens, Morneau told the River Town Times. As the years wear on and the ARC’s membership shrinks, it becomes more of a challenge to tend to the plants, she said.

“My husband is 80-years-old now and I’m getting older too,” she said. “We have a student from St. Clair College who helps us out, but it’s too much work for one person.”

Anyone who has a passion for rhododendrons is encouraged to join up and share his or her expertise.

Sr. Cardinals split a pair of games over the past week

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team stayed active over the past week with a pair of games.

Their first game was last Wednesday night at the Libro Centre and was a 12-8 loss to the visiting Harrow Blues.

The loss snapped Amherstburg’s fivegame winning streak with it also being the sixth straight win for Harrow.

The Cardinals jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Bassingthwaite’s RBI double brought home the first run with Mac Ouellette’s bases loaded infield single scoring the second.

Amherstburg looked to be in a position to score more but a double play with the bases still loaded ended the inning.

Harrow tied the score with two runs of their own in the second inning and went ahead with six in the fourth, but the Cardinals scored six of their own in the bottom half of the fourth.

However, Harrow would go ahead to stay in the top of the sixth inning with four runs.

“It was tough. We didn’t get our hitting going early. We stranded guys earlier in the game,” said Ouellette.

Ouellette believed the outcome could have been different if they were able to score additional runs when they had the chance earlier in the game.

It was a “tough sky” night, he added, as outfielders had difficulty picking up fly balls but Ouellette added that both teams had to play through it.

“It was a good last five games,” he said of the winning streak. “We’ll regroup.”

The Cardinals were in Essex for a game against the Yellowjackets.

Amherstburg got back on the winning track with a 7-0 victory.

Kids Curing Cancer teams with AMBA for fundraiser

By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association (AMBA) has once again chipped in to help in the fight against cancer.

The AMBA teamed with Kids Curing Cancer (KCC) to raise funds in concert with the AMBA’s “Fun Day” for young baseball players. Teams in the rookie, senior T-ball and junior T-ball divisions fundraised with players in other age groups also welcomed to participate, said Jodi Baillargeon.

The event was held last Saturday at Centennial Park.

Baillargeon’s daughter Lauren helped found KCC and younger daughter Kierstyn and son Ty also now help as well. The “Fun Day” fundraiser was used to help launch the 2020 campaign with proceeds to be split in the coming fundraising year between the Fight Like Mason Foundation and Ronald McDonald House.

Both charitable organizations have been the subject of KCC’s generosity in previous years.

Baillargeon pointed out that in addition to collecting donations, there was a bake sale and door prizes available as well.

It was the second year that AMBA was involved with girls convenor and former T-ball convenor Brook Lippert noting they were hopeful of topping the $1,000 that the event raised last year.

“I’ve been involved with Jodi and the kids for a couple of years now and I’m also on the board with Amherstburg Minor Baseball,” explained Lippert.

Lippert said she approached the board with the idea last year and, after their approval, she ran with it. The AMBA has the “Fun Day” anyway, she added, so it ties in well to have Kids Curing Cancer be involved as well.

“Since we have so many people here, it works out pretty well,” said Lippert.

“We’ve had a really good turnout.”

Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission welcomes 128 golfers McAllister said he loves to golf, but he’s happy to step back into an operational role once per year if it means helping out a local non-profit.

His father, Tim McAllister, is the president of the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission’s board of directors.

“I noticed fairly early on, once we started seeing more than 100 people come out, that I would have to give up golfing for the day,” he said. “I still get to ride around, say hello and thank

people for coming. It’s a good sacrifice to have to make.”

This year, the golf tournament brought in $7,800 for the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission, bringing the total raised over the past 12 years to $70,400.

The money raised at the event will

go directly to the Mission’s daily operations, Winston McAllister, event organizer, told the RTT. “The Mission’s motto is ‘People Helping People,’” he said. “I think today sort of exemplifies that. We couldn’t do what we do and help the people in our community without that community’s support.”

The trip to New York was a highlight for her but she noted it has also opened some doors. She is passionate about songwriting but notes she will also be performing as well, with an upcoming performance being at the July 20-21 Woofa-Roo Pet Festival at the Libro

Centre in Amherstburg. She will also perform at the Miss Universe Western conference July 20 in Windsor.

“I started performing and competing when I was ten and started writing when I was 15,” she said.

Clayton describes her music as “mainstream pop” but is also “very

raw and authentic.”

“It’s emotional. I keep it as close to my real life as possible. It’s like writing a diary and letting the world hear it,” said Clayton.

Clayton hopes that other local artists can learn from her, advising them to “block out all of the noise” and

relentlessly push forward.

“You can’t be afraid to make waves,” she said. “I hope people can learn from my experiences. My journey has been an imperfect one as well.”

The tournament featured a sold out crowd of 144 golfers, Elliott noted, and other former NHL’ers scheduled to be on hand included Michael Leighton, Darren Banks and Todd Warriner. Vancouver Canucks prospect Michael DiPietro was also scheduled to golf, he said, and he donated an autographed jersey as well.

Other door prizes included an Alaskan trips and autographed jerseys from Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman and Jovanovski.

“The generosity and support of our sponsors allows us to contribute and have a fun day,” said Elliott. “It’s

a good tournament. The cause is big. It touches a lot of people.”

Jovanovski said the organizing committee was happy to see the level of support again this year.

“The support has been tremendous,” he said. “It’s going to a good cause. People want to help. People want to contribute. I think probably everyone at the tournament has been touched by cancer themselves, through their families or through someone they know.”

Jovanovski’s mother is a breast cancer survivor and helped inspire him to launch the tournament. He said it was a tough few years for his mother but that she is

“making strides in the right direction.”

Cindy Binall, senior manager of communications with the Canadian Cancer Society, said that much of the research the proceeds will go towards is happening at the University of Windsor.

“It’s a phenomenal amount of money that impacts so many people,” said Binall. “That is going to leading edge cancer research for breast cancer research.”

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, she said, but it is not strictly a form of cancer that women get.

“We always talk about it with women but men get breast cancer as well,” said Binall.

“It’s a win-win relationship between us and our municipalities,” he said. “The connections we make with the mayors and the municipalities help us too.”

CLEC executive director Karen Bolger joined DeSantis in thanking not only the

golfers and the sponsors, but the volunteers as well. She noted the proceeds will directly benefit people supported by CLEC, specifically for summer supports for children and youth.

“Community Living Essex County supports over 700 children, youth and

adults and their families who have intellectual disabilities,” said Bolger.

The site of the tournament, Sutton Creek Golf Club, is one of the sites that employs a person with a disability. Cory LaJeunesse, head golf professional at Sutton Creek, noted that they have hired

people supported by CLEC and thanked the agency for assisting employers who choose to make those hires. He was joined

by Kyle Spearing, who works and golfs at Sutton Creek, with Spearing having many accomplishments on the Special Olympics golf circuit.

“I was just informed that this incident in fact does not fall under the Ministry of Labour’s jurisdiction. This incident occurred at a farm and the deceased was not a worker as reported to the Ministry. So, we are therefore no longer investigating,” Deline stated in an e-mail.

The man was identified by Essex County OPP as Alex Joseph Durham of Amherstburg. Nothing criminal was determined and police have concluded its investigation.

Ex-CFL star in town for Broil King

By Ron Giofu A former CFL star turned Broil King sales representative was in Amherstburg over the weekend to help promote the latter.

Dan Comiskey was at Amherst Supply last Saturday to promote Broil King products, including demonstrations on proper barbecue and keg smoker usage.

Comiskey said Broil King likes to go to dealers, which Amherst Supply is, and provide product demonstrations and show staff and customers the proper way to grill food and prepare it the best possible way using Broil King products.

“I drive around and talk about barbecues and cooking and it’s pretty good,” said Comiskey. “This is what brought me home. As a company, we want to put our barbecues in as many backyards

as possible.”

Comiskey held cooking demonstrations during his time in Amherstburg all the while promoting his company’s products.

Leah Moskaluk, manager at Amherst Supply, said Comiskey is their Broil King sales representative and he comes regularly to the locally-owned store. He suggested doing a live cooking demonstration and prepared numerous food items while in Amherstburg.

“He came in today to help check on how we’re doing,” she said.

Amherst Supply is located at 111 St. Arnaud St. in Amherstburg.

Comiskey, who now lives in Chatham, is a retired CFL offensive lineman and professional speaker, who played 13 seasons for Saskatchewan, Hamilton, Edmonton and Calgary. He was drafted in the 1997 CFL Draft by Saskatchewan.
