Town goes to the dogs at Woofa-Roo Pet Festival By Ron Giofu
People and their pets from around Windsor-Essex County and beyond converged on Amherstburg over the weekend for the Woofa-Roo Pet Festival. The annual pet festival was held once again at the Libro Centre and while organizers and those in attendance had to combat high heat, particularly on Saturday, a number of events and activities were still able to be presented including dock diving, dog agility shows, guest speakers, demonstrations, vendors, pony rides and more. “We’ve never been before so we thought we’d check it out,” said Heather Lane from Kingsville. “So far, so good.” Heather and daughter Macy Lane brought their 16-month-old dog Dakota to the event, with Dakota being just one of many dogs brought out by their owners. “We’ve only had her for five months,” said Lane. “We’re trying to get her used to being around other animals and people.” The Lanes said they could see themselves coming back. “We’ve tried some new products, got some new treats,” said Lane.
Tammy Bourgoin, owner of Pawsitively Comfortable out of Windsor, brought her wares to Woofa-Roo, which included custom designed dog and cat beds.

The Woofa-Roo Pet Festival was held last weekend at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. The Border City Barkers held dog agility shows (above) while dock diving was a hit again this year with Corey Schill of Oshawa and his dog Riot showing their stuff.
“We love it,” Bourgoin said of the festival. “We’ve been with Woofa-Roo for about three years now. We love the festival. We love the people. It’s so fun. We intend to come back next year too.” Bourgoin said the animals and people are the drawing card and that while it’s a lot of work transporting her products to their tent, it was worth it. She said it leads to a lot of business, particularly after the festival concludes. “It’s good for business,” she said. Jacob Reddam and his dog Leo came in from Lakeshore for the event and even participated in one of the demonstrations inside the Libro Centre’s indoor soccer facility. “My girlfriend saw an ad for (the festival),” he said. “We’re big dog people. We thought we’d get (their seven-year-old German Shepherd/Lab mix) out here and also see a bit more of Amherstburg.” Reddam said “it’s a lot of fun” but admitted “I spent a little more money than I expected.” Reddam said the only flaw he noticed was that they had difficulty finding the outdoor stage at first, but was impressed with the festival overall.
“It’s a good use of the space,” he said, adding he liked the flexibility of having it indoors and outdoors. “I thought the event was put together well.” Charlotte Osborne and Bill Findlay were with the Chatham-Kent Parrot Club and Findlay said they had about 15 parrots to display. “The reason we’re here is to try and educate people on parrots,” said Findlay. Findlay added they thought the festival was great and came in from Thamesville for it. He noted they put Woofa-Roo Pet Festival bumper stickers on their cars to help advertise the festival in that area. Deloni Leslie and her dog Safari-Ari took part in the dock diving competition. Leslie said she got into dock diving a few years ago at Woofa-Roo and is now the president of Ontario Dock Dogs. “I started here five years ago and got involved with the club,” she said. Leslie said she travels with her dog around the province and will soon head to Dubuque, Iowa for the Dock Dogs World Championship in October. Festival director/founder Lorene Clayton was pleased on how things turned out overall, though there were

DiCarlo makes his return at Essex County council meeting By Ron Giofu Mayor Aldo DiCarlo made his return to public life last Wednesday night as he attended his first meeting since the spring. DiCarlo attended his first meeting of Essex County council since April and while he noted he still isn’t quite out of the woods yet from the health issues he has been experiencing, he has been working through those issues. He added that while he hasn’t been medically cleared as of yet, he still wanted to get back to work. “I am back hopefully for good. I am still working my way through health issues,” the Amherstburg mayor stated. “I have not been officially cleared but I guess my stubbornness put me back to work sooner than I probably should have.” DiCarlo said he has missed doing his work as mayor. “It’s great to be back to work,” the mayor said. DiCarlo said the support he has received from Amherstburg and
the surrounding communities has been appreciated. “The response has been absolutely incredible and a little humbling at the same time,” he said. The mayor is hopeful of being at the August 12 town council meeting. He wanted to come back at the July 15 town council meeting but he wasn’t quite ready health-wise. “I was having a rough day,” he admitted. “It’s still one day at a time.” DiCarlo said he was happy to be able to attend the county council meeting. “It’s great to be back to work,” said DiCarlo. “I miss it.” Town council had granted DiCarlo a three-month extension to his leave of absence request at the June 24 meeting. At that time, Councillor Michael Prue was appointed as the town’s alternate to Essex County council to sit in for DiCarlo and while Prue was at last Wednesday night’s meeting, he did not participate due to DiCarlo’s return. A similar report was before county council last Wednesday, but was shelved due to DiCarlo’s return.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo (right) chats with Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche prior to the start of last Wednesday night’s Essex County council meeting. “We are very happy to see Mayor DiCarlo back,” said Mary Birch, the county’s director of council and community services/clerk.
Warden Gary McNamara agreed. “It’s so good to see you and welcome back,” McNamara told DiCarlo as part of the warden’s opening remarks.
Local fire officer achieves new level of accreditation By Ron Giofu
Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Ron Meloche (left) is presented his certificate from Chief Bruce Montone.
An officer with the Amherstburg Fire Department has achieved a new level of training and was recognized by the department and town council. Assistant Deputy Chief Ron Meloche achieved “Fire Officer Level IV” training requirements through the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is at the level known as the NFPA 1021 Standard. Meloche said it was the latest in his education as a firefighter and now a fire officer, and the courses he took earlier this year were online and in-school training. “It was a challenge for me,” he said. “It dealt with more of the administrative side.” The courses were attended by other officers including chiefs, deputy chiefs and other officers Meloche said he learned from people with a lot of different backgrounds. The Level IV designation is the last level in the program and Meloche was recognized before town council at the July 15 town council meeting.
“I’m thankful I’ve had the opportunity to continue my education,” the 27-year veteran said. Meloche added he has been taking courses and upgrading his training since the late 1990’s and it is envisioned it will be ongoing. Chief Bruce Montone said the certification program is focused on specific qualifications and involved management of fire protection services, multi-agency service delivery, human resources and risk management. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche congratulated the assistant deputy chief on his accomplishment. The deputy mayor did so while also acknowledging that Ron is his younger brother. Leo noted that he has long known that his brother was very passionate about his firefighting duties and was pleased to congratulate him on his latest accomplishment. In addition to the deputy mayor, several other members of the Meloche family were on hand at the July 15 meeting to support and congratulate the assistant deputy fire chief.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Local parents speak favourably of school’s efforts to help son To all parents looking to enhance their son’s education: In 2017 after much consideration and hesitation, we enrolled our son Konner Lauzon at St. Peter’s ACHS College School in Amherstburg for Grade 8. It turned out to be the best decision we ever made for him. When Konner was very young, he was given an I.E.P. (an individual education plan) by the school board due his learning disabilities. They ranged from auditory processing and short term memory issues as well as general comprehension. Konner struggled daily in the regular school system because it failed to recognize and deal with his learning disabilities. We had many meetings with school board and
LST teachers where they said things would be put in place but, they never seemed to happen. Konner just kept falling further and further behind and became more and more discouraged. He would want to miss school and not do homework because he was just pushed through with no direction and was very frustrated. Konner suffered with low grades and more importantly he suffered with low self-esteem. In the one year that our son attended St. Peters ACHS School, we saw a dramatic change in his school work, performance, and ethics. The school headed by Mr. Peter Thyrring was able to work with Konner to redirect his focus towards school and accomplishing better grades. The school taught responsibility, accountability,
discipline, knowledge, and respect. When Konner started to attend St Peter’s ACHS College School, he developed a whole new interest in school and work. He gained confidence in himself and realized that he could succeed with the proper guidance and self discipline. Now with Konner in high school it is even more evident the dramatic change St. Peter’s ACHS College School and Mr. Thyrring’s teaching techniques have made. In June this year, for his first year in high school, Konner made the “honour roll.” In hindsight, we should have enrolled Konner at St. Peter’s ACHS College School earlier. However, we trusted the system and it let us down. If St. Peter’s ACHS College School offered high school, our son would
still be there today. Konner is not the only success story at that school. Just ask around and you will find out. Since being in Amherstburg, students at that school have won numerous awards in academics and sports. They even were able to have six academic high school credits issued to some of their Grade 8 students prior to graduation. It is truly a great school. Don’t let its low numbers fool you. Attending St. Peter’s ACHS College School is worth the investment. The return is unbelievably great. We will always be grateful to St. Peter’s ACHS College School and Mr. Thyrring with their teaching approach and abilities. Thanks for inspiring our son and the many others. —Keith and Nicole Lauzon Amhersburg

Local resident Ken Schneider was out on the Detroit River recently in the area known as “The Flats” near Cooper’s Marina when he hauled in a muskie that was a record catch for him. The fish was roughly five-feet in length and Schneider estimated it weighed anywhere from 35-40 pounds. He caught it in late June and he said it took about 15 to 20 minutes to get it into the boat. It was eventually released back into the river. “I’ve never seen anything that big,” the local fisherman reported.

Organizers hope for over 700 vehicles at “Car Crazy” show By Ron Giofu
Classic car lovers will be in their glory this Sunday. Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy show returns to the downtown streets of the town with organizers hoping for good weather so that the streets will once again be packed with vehicles. The same streets will be blocked off with that including portions of Dalhousie St., Richmond St., North St., and Rankin Ave. so vintage vehicle lovers will still have plenty of ground to cover to see their favourite vehicles. Toddy Jones Park will also be packed with cars during the event. Last year’s car show drew approximately 700 vehicles and event co-chairs Scott Elliott and Steve Maluske are hoping for at least that many this Sunday. “As long as the weather holds, we’re looking for that many, maybe more,” said Elliott. “We’re hoping to have 700-plus cars,” added Maluske. Bigg Wiggle will once again be the featured entertainment this year and the platinum sponsors are local realtors John D’Alimonte and Kim Wheeler. Lights Sound Action Entertainment Services will be providing DJ services at the intersection of Richmond St. and Dalhousie St. Elliott said there are few changes to previous years, but one of the big things that has changed is the addition of a second entrance for classic vehicles to enter through. There will still be a
gate at North St. as in the past but that will close mid-morning and vehicles that are to be parked along Richmond St. and other southern portions of the show area will enter through a gate in the area of Richmond St. and Bathurst St. “This year, for safety reasons, we are going to close the North St. entrance at approximately 10-10:30 a.m. and then open Richmond St.,” said Elliott. “We’ll have a second entrance to alleviate car traffic during peak times during the show.” It’s the first year for Elliott and Maluske as event chairs as they have taken over from former chair Eleanor Renaud, who stepped back and is now an advisor for this year’s show. Elliott said the show is what it is because of the hard work of Renaud and the committee over the years. “It’s a well-organized and well-run show thanks to Eleanor,” said Elliott. “It’s on a lot of people’s calendars. It’s a popular show. The setting is great being downtown.” Vehicles come in from around southwestern Ontario, Michigan with one vehicle even expected to come in from Florida this year. “It’s getting pretty big now,” Maluske said of the car show. Maluske said they are trying to focus on supporting Amherstburg businesses, noting T-shirts that will be for sale are being created in town, and that they hope visitors will support downtown restaurants, coffee shops and merchants. A 50/50
draw will done by Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157. There will also be a collection of new cars from Amherstburg Buick GMC and Joe Meloche Ford. The awards also make their return this year, including the Paulie Award for best in show. That award is named for Paul Renaud, Eleanor’s husband, who helped found the show. Paul Renaud is also a former town councillor.
Registration runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and the show is open to the public from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration forms can be picked up at Amherstburg Buick GMC, The Best Little Body Shop in Town, Rags to Riches Upholstery and Malden Automotive. The entry fee to put a vehicle into the show is $10. For more information, visit www. amherstburgsgonecarcrazyshow.com or “Like” them on Facebook.

Town to establish dangerous dog appeal committee By Ron Giofu
Town council has voted to establish a committee of residents to deal with appeals of dangerous dog designations. A three-person committee will be formed to deal with dangerous dog appeals. The mandate of the committee will be to hear and determine all appeals in accordance with the procedures established under the Statutory Powers Procedure Act. Currently, town council hears
the appeals. “Changing the composition by removing council members or reducing the number of council members is consistent with other models in other municipalities. This will remove council members from having to make a decision for a particular result in a specific case. Doing so can create the appearance of bias,” manager of licensing and enforcement Nicole Rubli stated in a report to council. “Moreover, any action by a council member may
be perceived by one resident as favouritism or personal animosity toward the other.” Rubli wrote that the changes in the committee composition are intended to improve administrative fairness for individuals appealing a Dangerous Dog Order and to increase transparency of the Dangerous Dog Appeal Committee Councillor Don McArthur liked the new way of hearing appeals. He said there are passionate and knowledgeable dog owners who can bring a great
deal of knowledge to the process. “They would be judged by a jury of their peers,” said McArthur. “I trust the residents will make the right call.” Councillor Michael Prue was the lone holdout in the 5-1 vote, stating agencies like the police, humane society have trained officers that know what they are doing. “I’m not sure setting up a bureaucracy and starting up a committee to second guess officials’ opinions is right,” added Prue.
Administration updates council on fireworks cancellation By Ron Giofu
The cancellation of the Canada Day fireworks was elaborated upon at Monday night’s council meetings. High water levels were the major culprit as to why the July 1 festivities weren’t capped by the normal fireworks display and Councillor Patricia Simone wondered why that was and why there wasn’t better contingency planning. However, according to director of parks, recreation and culture Phil Roberts, the town did try different measures to keep the fireworks part of the plans but
those were ultimately unsuccessful. Roberts said the fireworks was one of the first files he had to deal with since joining the town and that he learned last year was “a near miss” due to water levels as well. He learned that the property owner on Boblo Island allowed the launch area to be built up to allow for the fireworks to happen in 2018. This year, the fireworks contractor had difficulty accessing the site due to water levels surging and that a sustained east wind helped keep levels high around the time of Canada Day. The property owner had also suggested using a dock and the town also
studied using, and perhaps even purchasing a barge, but the barge purchasing option went awry when the cost was a “ridiculous” $5,000 for a barge that Roberts questioned was seaworthy. There were other issues regarding using a barge, including who would look after it during the event, with Roberts noting “the parks department is not in the barge business.” A barge is still being considered for 2020, he noted, though cautioned it would come at additional costs to the town. A barge would be further considered if water levels are still an issue next year, said Roberts.
Seasons Amherstburg gives helping hand to Amherstburg Food Bank The Seniorosity Squad of Seasons Amherstburg retirement home collected and donated 130 cans to the Amherstburg Food Bank. They go out in the community once or twice a month, with donations twice a year to the food bank. The corporate office made an annual donation of $2,000. In all, Seasons Retirement Communities will donate $40,000 to local food banks in Ontario and Alberta. The company has chosen to do so in the summer, after learning that many food banks are in greater need during this time of the year. This sum represents a $2,000 donation to a local food bank in each community where Seasons operates retirement residences, including the Amherstburg Food Bank. PPC selects its candidate for the 2019 federal election Bill Capes to represent People’s Party of Canada in Oct. 21 election By Ron Giofu
SUBMITTED PHOTO
The People’s Party of Canada has named Bill Capes as its Essex candidate.
The People’s Party of Canada has its candidate in the riding of Essex for this year’s federal election. Bill Capes has been named by the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) Essex riding association as their candidate. According to a press release sent out by the PPC riding association, Capes was born and raised in Windsor before he moved to Essex County. He lived in Harrow for ten years before moving to Belle River, where he has lived the last seven years. He believes he has insight on life on both sides of the county and issues facing many of the residents. “The platform and (party leader Maxime Bernier’s) leadership qualities sell themselves: the average person in our community is waiting for and receptive to positive change in our political sphere. I believe in this platform and I believe Max will get the job done.” Capes is a machinist by trade and currently works as a machine leader at Southwest Manufacturing. He has never previously been involved in politics;
however, when Bernier started the People’s Party, “the platform of working for everyday Canadians instead of special interest groups resonated with Bill,” the riding association’s press release states. Capes believes that “our party is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do politics differently and engage with those who have been disenchanted by years of backroom deals and disingenuous politicians who say one thing and do another.” “The PPC is a grassroots, community driven party and the only party truly advocating for limited government, personal freedom, and individual responsibility,” said Capes. Capes added: “Necessities are too expensive. We will fix that.” The 2019 federal election is Oct. 21. Tracey Ramsey is the incumbent with the New Democrat seeking her second election victory after winning in the 2015 election. Chris Lewis will try and turn the riding blue once again as he is running as the Conservative Party candidate. Lewis was the PC candidate in the last provincial election.

Local women hope new book will assist others “Wounded Birds and Shattered Dreams” recently released
Local authors Jessica Suset and Beth Morso have written a new book about their experiences, which have included being abused and having dysfunctional family lives. By Ron Giofu A pair of local sisters have had to endure dysfunctional childhoods, marriages to abusive husbands, alcoholism, incest, animal cruelty, death
and divorce. Now, they have unpacked the memories they had locked away and authored the new book “Wounded Birds and Shattered Dreams – The HeartWrenching True Story of Two Sisters.” Written by Jessica Suset and Beth Morso, the book was recently released by the Xlibris publishing company. “Beth and I are ten years apart in age and we chose the wrong men not once but twice,” said Suset. “Our dream is to help others as well as educate the public so they can recognize the signs and hopefully help someone themselves. The book is also educational for those who do not understand why men and women do not just leave their abusers.” The sisters started talking about the past at a family barbecue last year, Suset said, and that developed into the idea of writing a book. Through the process, there were therapeutic times for them while they also dug up other memories they had locked away over the years. “I left home as soon as I got out of high school,” explained Suset, “as we had an alcoholic father and a mother with a mental illness.”

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the non-profit has offered the program, having helped over a dozen students living in Amherstburg get to classes. ACS executive director, Kathy DiBartolomeo, says students in the area have come to rely on the service. “The St. Clair Student Shuttle has become a vital program for so many people. It helps young people achieve their aspirations and their potential and we’re proud to be a part of that,” said DiBartolomeo. “Not all of us can afford our own vehicle and with rising
rental prices, moving closer to campus can be challenging. This service is just one more option Amherstburg residents have when looking at how they’ll be getting to class.” The shuttle operates Monday to Friday during the fall and winter semesters, with closures on holidays. Students are picked up and dropped off at various convenient and central locations throughout Amherstburg which are to be determined. Registration is now open and the deadline to register is Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. Students can register for the shuttle service by calling 519-736-5471 or learn more about it by visiting www.amherstburg-cs.com/st-clair-student-shuttle. Local girls part of USSSA World Series championship team Lily Mulder and Chloe Cole show their hardware after their team came home with the USSSA Space Coast World Series championship (left photo). The Amherstburg girls play for the LaSalle Athletics and they went 8-0. The girls and their coach Mike MacNeill pose for a team photo following their championship win. They now head to the provincial championships in Windsor this weekend. RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU (LEFT) SUBMITTED PHOTO (RIGHT)
By Ron Giofu The first Canadian team to win the USSSA World Series in U12 fast pitch comes from this area with two of the girls being from Amherstburg. Lily Mulder and Chloe Cole are part of the LaSalle Athletics team that travelled to Viera, Florida in early July and came home with the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Space Coast World Series championship in the U12 division, the
first Canadian team ever to do so. The team qualified by winning tournaments in the U.S. and made the most of it. The Athletics played eight games while in Florida and won all of them. Cole said they were thrilled to win but “at the same time, I can’t believe it actually happened. We just got on a roll. “Teams were trash talking us and we just showed up and destroyed them, added Mulder, who was named tournament most valuable player (MVP).
Mulder said the key to victory was working as a team and cheering very loudly to get the other team out of sync and into their heads. Despite being down at points in games, the local team worked together and managed to pull all of them out. Cole pointed out the U.S. teams played more games than they did going in and were thought to be favourites because of it.

Local girls do well at North American Irish Dance competition By Ron Giofu A pair of Irish dancers from Amherstburg went to Vancouver earlier this month and came away with impressive results. The local girls competed in the North American Irish Dance Championships, though dancers did come from other countries outside of North America as well. Mya Mulder competed in the U14 division and came in 60th while Zoe Basinski competed in the U13 division and finished 38th. However, their goal was to finish in the top 50 per cent of their age categories and that was accomplished. “I’m happy about it,” said Mulder, who made her first appearance at the North American championships. Basinski had competed at that level before, including last year when she didn’t do as well as she had hoped. “I’m very happy,” she told the RTT. “I had a drop last year and I came back.” Mulder said she thought she was dancing well while she was performing and when she learned how she was
graded, “I was just so happy with how I did. I was a moment where I was so excited.” It was nice to have the competition with both Canadian and American dancers fall on both Canada Day and July 4, Basinski continued, as this year’s North American Irish Dance Championships ran from July 1-6. Basinski added that her teachers told her that she had danced well and that her performance boosted her self-confidence when she was called back up. Both Amherstburg girls say they have met a lot of friends through Irish dance, including many from all around the world. They both practice five times per week at the Goggin-Carroll Irish Dance Club in Windsor. Their next competition is the Oireachtas Eastern Canada and both aim to compete again at next year’s North American Irish Dance Championships, which will be held in Nashville, Tennessee. Mulder and Basinski encourage other boys and girls to enter Irish dance, saying it’s fun and they have met a lot of new people through their involvement.
Mya Mulder and Zoe Basinski did well in the recent North American Irish Dance championships.
Sisters combine on book, hope it helps others in similar situations A brother also left home early and Beth was left with their parents and moved nine times as a child. “She moved out early so did my brother. I was left alone,” said Morso. “My grandmother bought me a horse. That saved me. I dove into horseback riding.” Over time, they would learn the reasons behind their mother’s condition as she had suffered trauma as well. The family suffered significant losses as well, including three family members in 1995. Suset said she moved to be closer to her brother that year and about 18 months later, he suffered seizures behind the wheel and was diagnosed with 13 brain tumours.
Both had a pair of abusive husbands with both now happily married to their third husbands. When writing the book, the sisters found out more about each other and wrote the book in chronological order of what happened to them, their families and even the horses. “When you are with a batterer, they control you so much,” said Suset. “You are so messed up with them in your head. We were both in the same predicament.” The sisters have heard from people going through the same ordeals and said it happens far often than people realize. “There’s a few chapters in the book that people found so hard to get through,” said Suset. “It’s graphic in parts but it has
to be.” Morso, a palliative care nurse, added she wants people to have “wow” moments while reading the book. She added that she had little ways to learn true family and societal relationships growing up and when a person doesn’t have that “they often flounder and fail.” However, she noted that she loves her mother “to the moon and back” but her mother didn’t have enough self-confidence to show her to be the best person she could be. “It was very therapeutic,” Morso said of writing the book. “It brought us closer. I understand what she went through and she understands what I went through. It’s a shame it took us so long to write the
book.” Suset, who plans on writing additional books in the future, noted that it is not only women who are abused and that men can find the book helpful as well. “I was glad to be finished writing it. I was having bad dreams every night. I did not have a good night’s sleep until I hit the ‘send’ button and sent it off to the publisher,” said Suset, a retired social worker. “There’s people that need to read this,” added Morso. “It has a purpose.” The 181-page book is available at Just Cork It in Amherstburg. It can also be purchased through Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites.

Sr. Cardinals stay busy over the past week Amherstburg lost 13-1. “We didn’t make many errors. They were just hitting the ball and finding the holes,” explained Amherstburg’s Nick Price. The Cardinals and Blues were supposed to play a doubleheader Sunday but the second game was postponed until next month. They travelled to Woodslee to play the Orioles junior team Tuesday in a game played after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. The Tecumseh Thunder are at the Libro Centre Wednesday night for a 7:30 game. Amherstburg then hits the road Sunday for a 1 p.m. game against the Essex Yellowjackets and then play Woodslee’s senior team next Wednesday (July 31) at 7 p.m. in Woodslee.
Amherstburg first baseman Mac Ouellette gets a hit during last Wednesday night’s game with the Essex Yellowjackets. Amherstburg won the game 5-2. By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior men’s baseball stayed busy over the past week with a pair of games. The first game of the week for Amherstburg was a 5-2 win over the Essex Yellowjackets at the Libro Centre last Wednesday night. It was the seventh win in the last eight games for the Cardinals, who scored one run in the first inning and two runs in each of the second and sixth innings en route to the victory. “Not a super eventful game at the end of the day,” said Cardinals’ outfielder Cody Brown. “It was a good team win.”
Brown stated they received good pitching in the win over the Yellowjackets and that it was a game where “you do what you have to do to get the win.” “We’re getting some good hitting and some good pitching,” said Brown. “The goal is to eliminate the mistakes.” Brown said they have been getting 10-11 players show up on an average game day so to have as many as 16 as they did last Wednesday night “was a bit of a luxury.” “It goes to show you what happens when we have our whole team out,” he said. The Cardinals were in Harrow Sunday for a game against the Harrow Blues.

The LaSalle Athletics team defeated teams from Georgia, Florida, Illinois and Indiana en route to the championship. Cole plays primarily second base although she does play in the outfield when needed. Mulder plays both third base and shortstop. With provincials
coming up soon in Windsor, the girls will still keep busy as they practice three times per week in LaSalle, either at Turtle Club or the Vollmer Centre. “I’m never free,” Cole joked. “I’m always busy.” “I like sports a lot,” added Mulder. “It’s great to be active all the time.”

By Ron Giofu The high water levels that the area has continued to experience are still causing headaches for those who live near the water. Councillor Peter Courtney raised concerns about erosion along shorelines, including the Edgewater area and along Dalhousie St., and asked administration at the most recent meeting of town council what, if anything could be done. Fire chief and emergency management co-ordinator Bruce Montone suggested that educational materials could be created and handed out to boaters at local marinas to educate them on what the wake can do to a shoreline. He also suggested contacting Transport Canada, though cautioned that the matter likely wouldn’t be dealt with until after this year’s federal election. Councillor Michael Prue agreed that education is necessary, adding that it is not the large vessels that are causing a lot of damage. “The real pounding of the waves are created by people on SeaDoos,” said Prue, adding cigar boats can also create large waves when they come around. Prue stated he would like administration to prepare a report on pleasure boats on the Detroit River and consider speed limits. Councillor Marc Renaud suggested word could get out through the media and that issues impacting other municipalities are also impacting Amherstburg. “Amherstburg is being affected the same as other communities are,” said Renaud. At last Wednesday night’s county council meeting, LaSalle Mayor Marc Bondy asked that things go one step further and wanted the county to invite Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark to come to
Essex County and see what is going on as it pertains to flooding and high water levels. “I wouldn’t think it’s a bad idea to visit our municipalities and see what is going on,” said Bondy. Warden Gary McNamara thought it was a great idea, and noted he has already met with Clark. “He’s aware of what is happening,” said McNamara. Bondy added after the meeting while he doubts Clark can fix the problem, at least he would be aware of what is happening and possibly find ways to assist landowners that have been impacted. “There’s not much of anything we can do,” Bondy admitted. “We can’t raise their homes or lower the water.” The province has named a special advisor on flooding with that announcement coming Thursday. John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of LongTerm Care, announced that Doug McNeil has been named Ontario’s Special Advisor on flooding. McNeil will advise the province on ways to reduce the impacts of flooding and ensure communities can recover quickly. “We heard from people across the province and saw first-hand the damage caused by flooding in so many communities,” said Yakabuski in a press release. “We want to help Ontarians protect what matters most, and the Special Advisor will help better prepare our province for flooding in the future.” The special advisor will assess current roles and responsibilities of governments, agencies and organizations involved in flood management, including any opportunities for improvement; review feedback received; identify focused recommendations; and ensure all recommendations are consistent with the province’s ability to implement them.

In Loving Memory of
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone; For part of us went with you the day he called you home. You left us peaceful memories Your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, You are always by our side. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again.

Council looking for more detailed in-camera descriptions By Ron Giofu Could there be more details released about what upcoming in-camera meetings are about? Councillor Patricia Simone questioned whether descriptions of what town council will be talking about behind closed doors could be beefed up. Clerk Paula Parker noted the ombudsman suggested generic descriptions but the integrity commissioner advised against that in order to protect confidentiality of matters being discussed. Simone said she would be more comfortable if descriptions of meetings and the topics therein could be increased, something Councillor Donald McArthur agreed with. McArthur said he trusted Parker and that no information that shouldn’t be released would be, but residents would be “put at ease” if more information was released.
“Where at all possible, I think we should do it,” said McArthur. Pouget appointed Town council has named former councillor Diane Pouget to the parks and recreation advisory committee. The vacancy came about due to the resignation of committee member Kennedy Laing, who accepted a job outside the area and is no longer able to attend committee meetings. Pouget joins the committee immediately with the term running through Dec. 2022. The vote to appoint Pouget was not unanimous. In a recorded vote, councillors Simone, McArthur, Michael Prue and Peter Courtney were in favour while Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and Councillor Marc Renaud were opposed. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo was absent. Woofa-Roo feels the heat, organizers happy nonetheless
Ava, Amy, Isabelle and Mike Soucie and their dogs visit with Lesley Smith of St. John Ambuland and her therapy dog (left) while Charlotte Osborne of the Chatham-Kent Parrot Club and her bird Coco were also on hand. Continued from Page 1
Jacob Reddam and his dog Leo came in from Lakeshore for the event and even participated in one of the demonstrations inside the Libro Centre’s
indoor soccer facility. “My girlfriend saw an ad for (the festival),” he said. “We’re big dog people. We thought we’d get (their seven-year-old German Shepherd/ Lab mix) out here and also see a bit more of Amherstburg.” Reddam said “it’s a lot of fun” but admitted “I spent a little more money than I expected.” Reddam said the only flaw he noticed was that they had difficulty finding the outdoor stage at first, but was impressed with the festival overall. “It’s a good use of the space,” he said, adding he liked the flexibility of having it indoors and outdoors. “I
thought the event was put together well.” Charlotte Osborne and Bill Findlay were with the Chatham-Kent Parrot Club and Findlay said they had about 15 parrots to display. Leslie said she got into dock
diving a few years ago at Woofa-Roo and is now the president of Ontario Dock Dogs. “I started here five years ago and got involved with the club,” she said. Leslie said she travels with her dog around the province and will soon head to Dubuque, Iowa for the Dock Dogs World Championship in October. Festival director/founder Lorene Clayton was pleased on how things turned out overall, though there were some weather-related issues. “In spite of the crazy weather this year, we’ve had nice crowds both days,” she said. “Chill zones” both inside and outside helped cool pets and people off, she noted. “I think our volunteers have done a phenomenal job keeping our guests cool,” she said. “I think the fact we have an indoor/outdoor festival has been our saving grace. We’ve been able to draw and keep a crowd because of it.” Saturday night’s thunderstorms also had an impact, with Clayton estimating about 20 per cent of the tents were damaged causing volunteers to have to hustle to set them back up. Some tents couldn’t be repaired and a few vendors left. Attendance was down slightly in peak times due to the heat, Clayton added, but overall she was pleased on how things went. “It’s still really good,” she said. “We’re still really happy.” For more photos, please visit our Facebook page.
