New citizens welcomed on Canada Day
The Zidan family were among those having their photos taken with area dignitaries following the citizenship ceremony at Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada Monday afternoon. The Zidans originally came from Libya but are now new Canadian citizens. By Ron Giofu Canadians celebrated the nation’s 152nd birthday Monday but it was even more special for almost 40 people at Fort Malden National Historic Site. A citizenship court was held in which 39 people from 19 different countries were sworn in as new Canadian citizens in a roughly 45-minute ceremony. “our history is your history, our laws are now your laws and our identity is now your identity.” “It’s great,” said Terri Waters. “I’ve lived here for 34 years. I figured it’s about time.” Waters, an Amherstburg resident who originally came from the United States, said her husband is Canadian and she decided to become one as well. “I feel very proud,” she added. “I’m excited to be doing this.”
Dipesh Jadav landed in Calgary from India in 2014 but now lives in Amherstburg. He said it was a long journey for him but was thrilled to be a Canadian citizen. Jadav added he sees Canada as a country that welcomes immigrants, allows families to advance and is a beautiful country as well. “I’m so excited. My whole family is here to be part of this citizenship ceremony,” said Jadav. “I am a citizen and I am so happy.” Continued on Page 10
