New citizens welcomed on Canada Day
The Zidan family were among those having their photos taken with area dignitaries following the citizenship ceremony at Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada Monday afternoon. The Zidans originally came from Libya but are now new Canadian citizens. By Ron Giofu Canadians celebrated the nation’s 152nd birthday Monday but it was even more special for almost 40 people at Fort Malden National Historic Site. A citizenship court was held in which 39 people from 19 different countries were sworn in as new Canadian citizens in a roughly 45-minute ceremony. The new citizens were told by presiding officer Chris Elliott that

“our history is your history, our laws are now your laws and our identity is now your identity.” “It’s great,” said Terri Waters. “I’ve lived here for 34 years. I figured it’s about time.” Waters, an Amherstburg resident who originally came from the United States, said her husband is Canadian and she decided to become one as well. “I feel very proud,” she added. “I’m excited to be doing this.”
Dipesh Jadav landed in Calgary from India in 2014 but now lives in Amherstburg. He said it was a long journey for him but was thrilled to be a Canadian citizen. Jadav added he sees Canada as a country that welcomes immigrants, allows families to advance and is a beautiful country as well. “I’m so excited. My whole family is here to be part of this citizenship ceremony,” said Jadav. “I am a citizen and I am so happy.” Continued on Page 10

General Amherst High School graduates prepare for the future
Brendan Bissonnette delivers the valedictory address at last Thursday night’s General Amherst High School graduation ceremony at the Libro Centre (left). The graduates turn and applaued their families at the conclusion of the 97th annual ceremony (above). By Ron Giofu Approximately 140 graduates bid farewell to their high school years Thursday night and are preparing for the future. General Amherst High School held its 97th annual commencement ceremony at the Libro Centre with valedictorian Brendan Bissonnette thanking teachers and staff for helping the graduates get to that point. “This part of our journey is over,” said Bissonnette. “We are high school graduates.” Bissonnette believed “we are a group that represents Amherst well” and urged the students to hold onto photos, memories and yearbooks with a
new school building on its way in a few years. “We couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our families,” he said, adding “we will remember our high school class forever.” Principal Melissa DeBruyne said it takes teamwork to survive in any phase in life and that a team will always be there to support the graduates. “Life is about learning,” DeBruyne told the Class of 2019. “It is about making mistakes and learning from those mistakes each and every time.” Superintendent of education Paul Antaya urged students to “change the status quo” as they move forward in life. Antaya also thanked the teachers at General Amherst as well as the parents for their efforts over

the last four years. Ron LeClair, Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee with the Greater Essex County District School Board, also offered his thanks to the teachers and parents. “The Class of 2019 represents the future of our town, province and country,” he said. “I feel quite confident you are up to the challenge.” LeClair encouraged graduates to have critical thinking, to advocate for just goals, and to continue volunteering and giving of themselves. “Be proud of your accomplishments. Be proud of who you are,” he said. “You are only limited by your imagination. Dream big.” There was roughly $400,000 in bursaries and entrance awards earned among the graduates.

By Ron Giofu After contemplating it for the last couple of years, Frank Palumbo decided to call it a career. Palumbo retired after 31 years as a teacher and, in the process, ended an era at Malden Central Public School. Palumbo spent the first three months of his teaching career at Anderdon Public School before transferring to Malden Central where he spent the remainder of his career. “It’s kind of surreal,” he said. Changes over the last 31 years included advancements in technology, with Palumbo recalled using “ditto machines” when he began with older students now having cell phones. “I was the luckiest person. I got to teach the nicest kids with the best parents in the best school around,” he said. “I got to teach with great teachers.” Palumbo taught Grade 5, then spent about 25 years teaching Grades 7 and 8 before teaching Grade 4 the last seven years. A lot of overnight trips, graduations and sporting events went along with it. “The kids were very enthusiastic and resilient,” he said. The basketball program at Malden Central played a “small part” in the development of the girls basketball program at General Amherst High School, with the latter earning ten straight trips to OFSAA at one point. He also looked over the many banners and pennants that adorn the walls of the Malden Central gymnasium and stated that “there is a story behind each one of those.” Noting he will miss the students, Palumbo said it was rewarding to watch a kid have success either in the classroom, court or field. Now, he will focus on his own children and spend more time with them and help them achieve their dreams. “My kids are still at a nice age where I can go and see their events, help them and share their successes,” he said. His family is also tied to Malden Central Public School. “I met my wife here,” he said, “and my kids got to grow up in the Malden family.” Palumbo also plans to play tennis, go biking and stay active on the sidelines. “I’ll still do some coaching,” he said. ACF report done for former membership to be released by town By Ron Giofu A report prepared for the former members of the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) is being released by town council. The report dealt with fundraising and cost $12,000, though Mayor Aldo DiCarlo noted several months ago that money was paid out through the foundation and not through the taxpayers. Councillor Michael Prue stated at town council’s most recent meeting that taxpayers have the right to know what is in the report. “This was a document that was prepared for the Amherstburg Community Foundation at a cost of $12,000,” said Prue. “It should be released to the public.” Prue noted the document outlined how additional funds could be raised

Ribbon cutting ceremony officially opens Lot 10 Brewing Co. By Ron Giofu It took ten months, but Amherstburg’s latest craft brewery is finally open. Lot 10 Brewing Co. officially opened Saturday at noon immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony where Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and most of town council attended. Lot 10 is owned by Jeff Fowkes, Brian Fowkes and Gerry Vanderheide and their families. “It’s a big day for us,” said Vanderheide. “We’ve been at this for ten-and-ahalf months. “We’re excited to be in Amherstburg’s downtown and to be a part of the community. We see a lot of good things happening downtown and we’re happy to be a part of it.” Vanderheide said “all of us are Amherstburg born and raised” and they also have brew master Dylan White not only working to create the beers, but he also created the locally-themed murals.
Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche (second from left) cuts the ribbon to officially open Lot 10 Brewing Co. He stands with owners Brian Fowkes, Jeff Fowkes and Gerry Vanderheide during Saturday’s grand opening. Lot 10 Brewing Co. has room for 65 people inside and will offer finger foods and appetizers in addition to the beer with wine also to be offered soon. There is the possibility of food trucks down the road as well as a collaboration with Downtown Espresso to use their patio.
“We’re opening with six beers on tap,” said Vanderheide, “a variety that I think will have something for everyone.” Vanderheide explained the name has a historical connection, as the property the microbrewery sits on was known as Lot 10 after the War of 1812. They are located
at 263 Dalhousie St. and their hours are 3-9 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, 12-9 p.m. Saturday and 12-6 p.m. Sunday. Their website is www.lot10brewery.ca. “They are going to be a great addition to the downtown core,” said Meloche. “More activity and the increased activity will benefit everybody.” Lot 10 Brewing Co. is a “unique business venture” to the downtown core and Meloche believes that “will certainly attract a new clientele.” “That bodes well to the economic diversity of the area,” the deputy mayor stated. Meloche recalled developing a business plan for another craft beer establishment about five years ago with one of the key findings since then for those owners are building relationships with customers and persistence. He said it was time for Lot 10 to “take centre stage” and believed their new venture will be an added boost to the local tourism industry as well.
Food truck part of the learning at Amherstburg Public School Students at Amherstburg Public School got a chance to learn about food and its preparation on a pair of occasions recently. Thanks to grant funding obtained through area grocery stores, the school was able to have a pair of culinary-related events with the first being a chef coming to give sushi roll samples to a few classes. The Bean’s Ladle food truck was also at the school with the truck being owned and operated by the Purdie family. Teacher Laura Braithwaite said students did a unit on food trucks and, thanks to one of the grants, it allowed an actual food truck to be brought in so that students could learn about what it takes to run one. “They came out and toured the food truck,” said Braithwaite. The food truck was not just there for tours, but it also provided lunch for about 400 students. Jen Purdie, whose children Ava and
Carter, go to the school, said they are the newest local food truck. The family had a restaurant by the same name in Windsor for the last five years, she said, and “we decided to have a food truck instead. “We launched in mid-May.” The food truck was busy with meals, making burgers, fries, chicken fingers and more with Carter busy on the truck and Ava helping to bring the food inside. Jen said they plan on being busy locally. “We’ll be doing local events trying to keep the business local,” she said.
Carter Purdie serves food out of his family’s food truck during a recent visit to Amherstburg Public School.

Housing open house held in Amherstburg for those caring for people with disabilities By Ron Giofu
A mother of an adult daughter sees the need for affordable housing for people in situations like her so she did something about it. Lois Bebbington organized an open house for those in similar situations and it led to over 50 people turning out to a meeting at the Libro Centre. People came from around Windsor-Essex County to share ideas, thoughts and possible solutions.
“I’m doing this on my own,” explained Bebbington. “This is my own initiative. I started this because I was worried about what would happen to my family if we got into a crisis.” Al Hendry from Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) noted that not a lot of provincial dollars are going into building new group homes and that people who go on the waiting list can often face long waits as they wait for a compatible match for housing. Many matches come when someone either moves out or dies, he stated. adult son Josh came from Tecumseh for the meeting. “Our children deserve to live on their own and live just like we do,” said Smyth-Turpin. Smyth-Turpin added that she was thankful to Bebbington for organizing the meeting, as it allowed people to network and keep in touch. She noted parents have to advocate for their children but to converse with others in the same situations is helpful. “Just the networking alone is fantastic,” she said. “Sometimes we feel alone when we have a child with special needs.” Smyth-Turpin added that Josh is tired of living under their roof and wants to be on his own and have a wife of his own one day. She said he has felt that way for the last five years. Bebbington said Councillor Don McArthur helped get the meeting off the ground and spread the word. She added that many seniors face the same situations as those with disabilities. McArthur added he was impressed by the number of people that attended the meeting and admitted he was there to learn. “There is an affordable housing crisis in Canada and there is one in Amherstburg,” he said, noting that over 800 people are looking for affordable housing in Amherstburg.

$ The Windsor Police Service - Amherstburg Detachment brought its “Coffee with a Cop” program to Caffeine & Co. in Amherstburg last Thursday evening. By Ron Giofu
The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment held the first “Coffee with a Cop” in town last week with the public invited to meet officers from both Amherstburg and Windsor. The meet-and-greet occurred at Caffeine & Co. last Thursday evening with not only Staff Sgt. Dave DeLuca and officers from the Amherstburg Detachment on hand, but officers from Windsor as well including retiring chief Al Frederick and new acting chief Pam Mizuno. DeLuca explained that “Coffee with a Cop” started several years
ago in Windsor and is an outreach program that allows members of the public to interact with officers on a more personal level. DeLuca was happy to have the program come to Amherstburg though noted many in the community are already familiar with the local officers. While some people are hesitant to talk to officers and only deal with them on an as needed basis, DeLuca said the event allows them to meet the public on an informal basis. “This fits with everything Amherstburg is already doing,” he said last Thursday night. Const. Fred Adair, the community services officer with the
Amherstburg Detachment, said it was one of the first times “Coffee with a Cop” came to Amherstburg since Windsor police took over. He agreed that the event allows people to see police officers are regular people and the public should be free to approach them. “We’re a part of the community just like they are,” said Adair. DeLuca added that he hopes to have another “Coffee with a Cop” in the fall and another around Christmas time. “I’m willing to listen to any ideas,” he said. “This is a great project. I’m a big supporter of it and I’m glad it’s here.”

Town to develop eco-tourism and wildlife awareness strategy By Ron Giofu Town council has directed administration to develop an eco-tourism and wildlife awareness strategy after an impassioned plea from a local resident. The town will also put up signs in and around the Big Creek Watershed in an attempt to bring awareness to motorists about wildlife in the area. An administrative report to council pointed out that over a one-month period during April and May, over 300 mammals, birds and herptiles were struck in the watershed area. Greg Nemeth, an Amherstburg resident and avid wildlife photographer, underscored the importance of habitat to species in the area and questioned what would
happen to wildlife if their habitat continues to disappear. “They are going to disappear and that is what is happening now,” said Nemeth. “If wildlife is going to continue to exist, we need more habitat.” Nemeth noted the number of turtles that have been struck on area roadways and that turtles have been laying eggs on the side of the road because they have no place else to go. “We have to save our wetlands. We have to make a priority of it. We have to do it quickly,” he said. Councillor Michael Prue believed there was a lot of sense to Nemeth’s presentation and also moved to have the signs erected in the area. Administration recommended in favour of developing the strategy but
CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF AMHERSTBURG NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING PROPOSED HOUSEKEEPING ZONING BY-LAW AMENDMENT TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Amherstburg will hold a public meeting on Monday, July 29, 2019, commencing at 5:00 p.m. in the Town of Amherstburg Council Chambers, 271 Sandwich Street South, Amherstburg, Ontario, to consider a proposed amendment to the Town of Amherstburg Zoning By-law 1999-52 under Section 34 of the Planning Act, RSO 1990 cP.13. THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO THE ZONING BY-LAW No. 1999-52 would introduce regulations pertaining to the use of shipping containers as accessory storage units. The following changes are proposed: x A definition of a “shipping container” is proposed to be added to clearly define this type of structure; x The addition of zoning provisions which will prohibit the permanent placement of shipping containers as storage units in all areas of the Town other than Industrial Zones and Agricultural Zones. For those areas not zoned Industrial or Agricultural, the temporary use of shipping containers for moving purposes or on construction sites will be permitted subject to regulations such as limiting the duration of the temporary placement of a shipping container, specifying setback distance from lot lines to maintain proper spatial separation and safe sight lines, and restricting the number of containers per property and the maximum size of a container; and, x For Agricultural and Industrial Zones, the use of permanent shipping containers for storage would be allowed subject to the following provisions: (i) shall require building permits; (ii) shall only be permitted as accessory structures; (iii) shall not be used for human habitation, office use, display, advertising, screening or fencing; (iv) shall only be located in the side yard or rear yard provided it: a) is screened from view if the side yard or rear yard abuts a street or properties zoned other than industrial or agricultural; b) complies with the lot coverage and accessory buildings and setback requirements of the zone; c) is not located in any required parking areas or landscaped areas/buffer; (iv) shall be included in the calculation of lot coverage; (v) shall not be stacked one on top of the other; and, (vi) the maximum number of shipping containers on any property shall be limited to two (2) unless the shipping containers are used in transportation of goods and materials in which case no maximum shall apply. The proposed amendment is general in nature and applies to various properties throughout the Town of Amherstburg, therefore no key map has been provided in this notice. The proposed by-law is located on the Town’s website on the Planning Department, Planning Notices page at https://www.amherstburg.ca/en/town-hall/Planning-Notices.aspx. The proposed Amendment to the Zoning By-law is in conformity with the policies of the Official Plan. ANY PERSON may attend the public meeting and/or make written or verbal representation in support of or in opposition to the proposed Zoning By-law Amendment. IF A PERSON OR PUBLIC BODY does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Town of Amherstburg before the by-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the Town of Amherstburg to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal. IF A PERSON OR PUBLIC BODY does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Town of Amherstburg before the by-law is passed, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal unless, in the opinion of the Tribunal, there is reasonable grounds to do so. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION relating to the proposed Zoning By-law Amendment (File # ZBA/11/19), including a copy of the draft Zoning By-law, is available for inspection at the Town of Amherstburg Planning Office at the Libro Centre, 3295 Meloche Road, during normal office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or at the Town website www.amherstburg.ca. opposed the signs stating in the report that “drivers may feel compelled to take evasive action to avoid wildlife, which could result in near misses or accidents causing damage, injury or fatality. Providing informational signage indicating that an area is one where wildlife could be encountered may possibly mitigate some of these risks.”

In a separately submitted photo by local resident Dan Laing, Laing states the Northern Map turtle has joined seven native turtles in Ontario as a species at risk. He said “most turtles living in wetlands near highways are being flattened far faster than they can reproduce. Our map turtles are also facing boating accidents, changing weather patterns, wetland degradation and hyper predation of their eggs by our urban predators.” Rising lake levels have submerged many of their basking rocks, he said, and asks that people safely move turtles off the road if they should happen to find one this summer.
Tenth annual Rotary Ribfest coming this weekend By Ron Giofu
An annual tradition is returning this weekend, with several changes from past years. The tenth annual Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest runs Friday through Sunday with the biggest change being the festival’s location. The Ribfest debuts at the Libro Centre this year after spending the first nine years of its existence at Centennial Park. A full slate of events is planned for the weekend, according to Steve Butcher. Butcher, who co-chairs the festival committee with incoming Rotary Club president Ann Marie Favot, noted there will a lot of local and area entertainment throughout the weekend. “We’ve got 15 time slots and 13 bands coming this weekend,” said Butcher. Buck Twenty headlines Friday night from 10:30 p..m-12 midnight with Huttch getting the same timeslot Saturday night. Local artist Adam Butcher will play all three nights, Butcher noted. Among the other events will be a Saturday afternoon cornhole tournament, an autograph session from 11 a.m.-12 noon Saturday with Vancouver Canucks goaltending prospect and local native Michael DiPietro, judging for the ribfest cookoff, a rib eating contest and more. A full schedule can be found at www.amherstburgribfest.com. “Sunday is Family Day,” said Butcher, noting there will also be a motorcycle show that day. The public will be able to vote on a people’s choice award among the bikes. Barring any last minute changes, ribbers will include Ribs Royale, Dinosaur BBQ Pit, Fat Boys BBQ and the Texas Rangers. Butcher added there will more food and dry goods vendors, with a vegan vendor also planned to be in attendance. The event has a number of sponsors including title sponsor Team Brad Bondy as well as Amherstburg Buick GMC, Libro Credit Union, Joe Meloche Ford and Wigle Home Hardware.

Western Secondary School celebrates the Class of 2019
Valedictorian Cassidy Geauvreau accepts a plaque from teacher Andrea Nikita (left) while the 2019 graduates proceed into the auditorium at Western Secondary School last Wednesday night.
The Class of 2019 has bid farewell to Western Secondary School. A total of 48 students made up this year’s graduating class with the commencement ceremony being at the school last Wednesday night. Valedictorian Cassidy Geauvreau brought greetings on behalf of her fellow students and said Western was a place where they could feel safe. Geauvreau noted that she entered Western Secondary with social anxiety and recalled being told by teacher Andrea Nikita in Grade 10 that she would be on a stage speaking by Grade 12. She added that students may have had their challenges during the years, but they were able to overcome them thanks to the patience of the staff at the school. “It feels like yesterday that we were getting off the bus for the first day,” she said, adding the four years went by
“Whatever paths lie in front of you, Western has given you the tools to be successful,” said LeClair. Mike Wilcox, superintendent of special education with the public board, called it “a very exciting time” and that “my advice to each of you is to set your course, follow your dreams and you will get to where you want to go.” Wilcox also thanked parents for “putting your trust in public education” adding that the graduation was “also a celebration of trust.” Principal Angela Safranyos said the graduates overcame obstacles and challenges to be successful “and we are proud of you for that.” “You can’t make everyone happy but you can make yourself happy,” she said. “Be OK with who you are.” Safranyos believed the students shouldn’t worry about comparing themselves to others as the only competition is to be a better person than they already are. “Believe in yourself is my message tonight,” the principal stated. Safranyos also referred to the closeness between students and staff at Western Secondary. “I truly believe we are a family,” she said.

quickly. Geauvreau joked that “I don’t think we could have survived four years without the day-to-day humour” and outlined the many activities they have enjoyed over the years. “Here at Western, we are one big family,” said Geauvreau. “Western brings out surprising results.” As the graduates head into their futures, the valedictorian stated “now is the time to explore and find out what you love.” Nikita, who acted as the master of ceremonies, said graduates are beginning a new phase of their lives but they will still be acquiring new knowledge. “Today doesn’t mean you will stop learning,” she said. “It means you will start learning in new and different ways.” Ron LeClair, the Amherstburg/LaSalle trustee with the Greater Essex County District School Board, recalled playing a concert in the school’s courtyard when he was younger, noting that is one of the reasons he is fond of the school. He added he is also fond of the inclusive nature of Western Secondary.

Essex MP Tracey Ramsey said “today is a special day for all Canadians and we are proud to welcome (the new immigrants) to our Canadian family.” Ramsey thanked the new citizens for choosing Canada, with Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche also welcoming the new citizens to Canada. “This place is now your home,” said Meloche. “Be proud and let that pride be your guiding light. Remember to always
contribute a little more than you take so that others may have the same opportunities given to you today.” Meloche also provided greetings at the opening ceremony to Canada Day, joined by councillors Don McArthur, Pat Simone, Michael Prue and Marc Renaud. “1867 was a great year for Canada. It was the birth of our country, the country we today call home,” he said. “Over that time Canada has benefited from the cultural diversity of the various ethnic
groups. Multiculturalism has become the fabric of our country.” Ramsey outlined the history of the maple leaf flag, noting the stripes recognize those who served in World War I and II with the ten points on the flag recognizing the ten provinces. “It is important to recognize those who served our country and those who are currently serving our country and helping us be strong and free,” said Ramsey.
“We should be very proud of our country that we have built,” added Essex MPP Taras Natyshak. “We are a country that works together and takes care of each other.” Events took place at Fort Malden with “Amherstburg in Motion” featuring “Amherstburg’s Mightiest Machines” at Toddy Jones Park. Due to high water levels, the Canada Day fireworks were cancelled and replaced with an outdoor movie.

AMA Sportsmen’s Association presents record-setting walleye tournament
All 1,000 tickets sold within first five days By Ron Giofu The AMA Sportsmen’s Association was jam packed Sunday afternoon as the 36th annual walleye tournament came to a close. The wrap up party saw the prizes awarded including draw prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000.Tickets went on sale May 1 and didn’t last long with tournament vice president Ken Tytgat noting they were sold out in less than five days. “That was a record breaking sell-out for this tournament,” added tournament president Luc Tremblay. Tremblay said they sell 1,000 tickets and although “it’s hard to say how many people actually fish,” it is estimated that at least 50 per cent do. Many buy for the wide array of raffle prizes, which the club thanks the community for. In all, there were roughly 225 door prizes. It is one of the largest walleye tournaments left in the region, said Ken, with Gwen Tytgat pointing out how popular fishing is in the area. “There’s a lot of people who fish along the Detroit River,” she said. “You see that every day.” Gwen added that “the door prizes all come from sponsors. Each person on the committee worked hard to get sponsors.” She further stated volunteers and others within the community always help chip in and make the walleye tournament what it is. “The whole area of Essex County helped us all the way around,” said Tremblay. Kent Wigle won the $5,000 grand prize

Patriotic athletes take part in annual Canada D’Eh Run/Walk Runners come from as far as Singapore to take part in the annual event

Runners in the kids dash complete the race at the Canada D’Eh 5K run (above) while athletes burst from the starting line in the adult race (right). William England holds his 2019 Canada D’eh Don Cherry participation medal after completing his race (bottom right). By Haley Rose A sea of red, white and moose ears filled the downtown core of Amherstburg Monday morning. The town’s Canada Day festivities kicked off with the annual Canada D’eh run. Thousands of runners of all ages filled the street to compete in either a 500 meter dash, 1 km or 5 km run. Many of the runners were in moose antlers due to a world record attempt being attempted. This was the seventh year the race has been held, and runners come from across the globe to compete.
“We have runners from Florida, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Montreal, St. John’s, Singapore. And they come every year to do this race because this is where it began,” said race director Chris Uszynski. Uszynski is the owner of Running Flat. Running Flat was founded on five simple ideas: safety, integrity, creating localized economic development and providing a great event experience, while raising money for great causes. Running Flat created, and has since been the lead sponsor of, the Canada D’eh race. The organization holds races across Canada and the United States.
“Running flat does so much work in the U.S., and our American friends laugh at us because they’ve heard of this Canada Day race we put on. It’s so great to be able to come and put this race on in our hometown,” Uszynski said. Upon completion of their race, runners and walkers were presented their medals, which were adorned with the face of Don Cherry this year. Uszynski expressed his thanks for everyone who came out and participated in the run, stating what a gorgeous community the town is and encouraged everyone to enjoy it and “get your Canada on!”

Team Uptown thanks sponsors as racing season underway By Ron Giofu
A local racing team is hitting the track all the while thankful for the support they have received. The report continued: “However, the risk with implementing wildlife awareness signage is that driver complacency is to be expected and little or no measurable results may be realized for the investment.” Prue believed the $2,440 investment in signage was worth it and called for a report with statistics in it after the signs went up. “You are absolutely right,” Prue told Nemeth. “We have to start making a policy at home.” Prue said they can’t wait for the federal government, nor can they wait for the provincial government with the former MPP remarking that sometimes it is difficult to get things accomplished at Queen’s Park.

Area family celebrates new wheelchair lift A family with Amherstburg roots is celebrating a new lift on their home but knows there are challenges ahead. Judah Pastorius graduated from the John McGivney Centre in Windsor. His parents Cori and Jason Pastorius were successful in getting funding through March of Dimes and Easter Seals for a new wheelchair lift. “We’re really happy it worked out the way it did, said Cori. “The front porch looks really nice. I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was difficult to get his wheelchair up the stairs. Jason noted the lift was put on the home in April. Judah was born prematurely at one pound, 12 ounces. His health battles have included heart surgery and asthma, though the latter is under control. As Judah has grown, his lungs have gotten stronger and it has resulted in fewer occasions where he is sick. When he does fall ill, he can recover quicker, his mother stated.
Cori and Jason Pastorius, along with Judah and Elisha, and Cori’s mother Joan. Future challenges will include having to purchase an accessible van and remodelling of their bathroom. They are also hoping to gain government funding to help with paying for the nutritional supplements Judah requires, which costs about $400 per month. “It’s been a journey, said Cori. “It really is one day at a time. We often forget to live that way but I feel you miss out if you don’t.

Ribfest coming to Libro Centre this weekend
Continued from Page 8

The Libro Centre offers 4.5 acres of space versus three acres at Centennial Park, Butcher noted. “The Town of Amherstburg helped us with the site preparations and fencing, he said. Another feature will be a shuttle service from 4 p.m.-12 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, thanks to Sharp Bus Lines. Pick-up and drop off locations will be at Centennial Park and the Walmart plaza near the Movati fitness club. There is also an all-ages section planned so youth can enjoy the bands and still be separated from the area licensed for alcohol. A 50/50 draw will also be held with it being one big draw this year on Sunday afternoon.
Getting the ten-year milestone “is a big thing, said Butcher, and that all of the proceeds will benefit Rotary Club of Amherstburg projects as it has in previous years. “We’re always looking for volunteers, he added. “We need about 200 to get us through the weekend. Those interested in volunteering can contact Favot at 519-980-7697 or annmarie.favot@libro.ca. They can also contact Butcher at 519-300-0961 or sbutcher@gushueone.com. “It’s bigger and better for sure, Butcher said of this year’s Ribfest. “If the weather holds out, it’s going to be a good weekend. Ribfest hours are 11 a.m.-12 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.

Villanova holds 29th annual graduation ceremony By Haley Rose St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Secondary School has bid farewell to the Class of 2019. Villanova held its 29th annual high school graduation last Thursday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor. Over 200 students were acknowledged for their achievements and walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Over 28 awards and bursaries were distributed. Major award winners included: Megan Laporte winning a $500 Christian Leadership award, Lauren Carlini winning a $500 Dedication Award, Mya Dbouk winning the Principals Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement at the College Level and Matthew Dunne for receiving the highest honour of the Governor General’s Award as well as the Principals Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement at the University Level. While being a graduate is a big accomplishment so many of the students thought the ultimate prize was holding the title of being a wildcat. Graduate Frank Gaurasci gave an opening salutatory address where he mentioned that the graduation was made possible because over the years the students had grown together to form a team. “Being a Villanova Wildcat has given us every tool we will need for the rest of our lives. It is now up to us to use what we learned at the school to support our own path. And to always remember
the principles of faith, knowledge and service we have learned from 2800 North Townline road,” Gaurasci said. The honour of being a Wildcat was also addressed by valedictorian Curtis Bondy. “What’s it like being a Villanova Wildcat? Well the answer is really quite simple. It’s about pushing yourself to your limits. Getting involved with new things. Holding onto your faith and jumping, even when you don’t have a parachute,” stated Bondy. Bondy went on to mention how this world is starving for creativity – new artists, athletes, academics. He said he knows his group of peers is ready to take on the next step of their journey and provide this. Principal Amy Facchineri ended the ceremony by addressing her students reminding each of them to “be kind to one another. Create your legacy and define our future.”
