Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy attracts 700+ vehicles By Ron Giofu

Steven and John Walsh of Harrow (left) and their 1966 Chevy 2 Nova SS won the Paulie Award for best in show at the Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy Show Sunday afternoon. Presenting the award are co-chairs Steve Maluske and Scott Elliott as well as former chair Eleanor Renaud. The award is named for Renaud’s late husband Paul.

Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy drew an estimated 710 cars to the downtown area with a father-son team earning the show’s top prize in their car’s debut. John and Steven Walsh of Harrow brought their 1966 Chevy 2 Nova SS to the show for the first time and ended up winning the Paulie Award, the best in show trophy named in memory of event co-founder and former town councillor Paul Renaud. “It’s fantastic,” Steven said of the award. “It’s the first car show (with this vehicle). We’ve been building it for ten years.” The father-son pair inherited it from John’s brother Bruce, who passed away. It has been in the Walsh family since the 1970’s and has had many uses, including as a drag car. They rebuilt it in Bruce’s memory. “We built it to drive it,” said John, noting Bruce “would be pretty proud right now.” Steven added they plan on entering the car in many more events and shows. “We’re the happiest dudes in Essex County right now,” he said Sunday afternoon.

McGregor Music Festival celebrates record total from this year’s event

A total of $75,000 will be donated to the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation

RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU

The McGregor Music Festival committee was joined by family members of committee members that passed away over the past year as they donated $75,000 to the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. The festival was held in June but the fundraising total was celebrated at the home of festival chair Sue LeClair last Tuesday night. By Ron Giofu Not only did the McGregor Music Festival achieve its intended fundraising target, it smashed it.

The volunteers on the organizing committee set out with a goal of $50,000 for the 2019 event. When all was said and done following the June 9 music festival, it was revealed that

this year’s day-long event at Co-An Park in McGregor raised a staggering $75,000. The previous record was $44,000, raised in 2018. That total was celebrated at a barbecue at the home of McGregor Music Festival committee chair Sue LeClair last Tuesday evening, with the barbecue being attended by committee members, family members of the three committee members that died over the last year as well as representatives of the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation (WCCF). All proceeds were donated to the WCCF, as they have been in previous years.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said LeClair, when she learned of the total. “I was in absolute shock. I called my mother.” LeClair credited her team of volunteers for raising $75,000, saying they asked everyone they knew for donations. They also welcomed approximately 700 people the day of the festival. The pig auction alone raised $1,900 with a wide assortment of raffle prizes “They brought their wallets and that’s how we did it,” said LeClair. A Facebook challenge leading up to the festival raising another $2,200, she added. Houida Kassem, executive director with the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation, credited LeClair and her committee for the work they did. She joked that she has learned never to question LeClair or her team after they raised $75,000 for the WCCF. “We can’t thank everyone enough,” said Kassem. Kassem said the proceeds will stay within Windsor-Essex County. Specific projects the proceeds will go towards this year will include the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation’s Patient Assistance Fund and a RHINO Laryngoscope. LeClair added that once they explained that to potential donors and the public, that is when people truly committed to the cause. “We don’t have to beg for volunteers either,” said LeClair. “McGregor is a very strong community. It’s a small community, but we’re dedicated.” This year’s festival was the 30th annual event and LeClair said they really didn’t change much from previous years.

Rubli stated two retail cannabis license applications have been received as of Monday night with one from Saskatchewan and the other from Sault Ste. Marie. The province’s next retail cannabis license lottery is planned for Aug. 20.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

What is the town doing with property taxes received?

I moved to Shaw Drive in late 2016. There were 20 units in our subdivision. The subdivision is now finished and there are 95 units. The first year that I received a complete tax bill for the year was 2014 and the valuation was $175,075 and my taxes were $2,366.34 total of all four payments In 2019, my complete valuation was $199,500.00 and my tax bill was $3,276.43 total for all four payments. Do the math - average 20 units times $2,366.34 equals $47,326.82 in 2016. In 2019, 95 units multiplied by $3,276.43 equals $311,260.85 and an increase

of $263,934.03 in this subdivision alone. Consider all the building going on in this town. Kingsbridge South, Kingsbridge North, subdivision the development South of the police station across from the Libro Center; the subdivision across from Pointe West Golf Club, on Golfview; Old Colony etc. additional housing and commercial properties in the town. It is my understanding that the developer puts in the services. The increase of assessments from MPAC. The town revenue from building permits etc.

I don’t think it is a stretch to say it is in the multi-millions for dollar increase to the town revenue. Our property taxes should go down not up. What is the town doing with all of the additional revenue? Not only Amhersburg, but any community in Essex County including Windsor and all the development and growth there. What are they doing with the increase of revenue? —Wayne Wilson Amherstburg

As a slo-pitch tournament played on behind them at Co-An Park, board members helped honour people who made the park what it is to begin with. A tree and baseball diamond were dedicated to two long-time volunteers Saturday evening with the families of the late volunteers on hand to accept the honours. Two of the board members – Amherstburg Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and Essex Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche – oversaw the ceremonies and paid tribute to the honourees. Leo Meloche pointed out that Wayne Bondy, also known to many as “Bones,” was born in Anderdon Township to parents Louis and Veneta Bondy, he had one older brother, Vincent whom he loved and respected. “In the spring when Vince visited from Toronto, he helped Bones beautify the grounds by planting flowers throughout the park,” Leo stated. “Bones” started his working career at the age of 16 at Brunner Mond in Amherstburg which later became known as General Chemical, as well farmed several acres along side his dad. He married his Betty Knapp in 1961 and quoting his son Brad, “raised six very attractive, highly intelligent, extremely successful children.” An avid hunter and fisherman, Bondy retired from General Chemical after 33 years and began a job he loved and cherished – manicuring the grounds and

nothing more he loved than to watch his own kids play on his pristine diamonds,” Leo stated. “There was a time when Brad mentioned to his dad that the grass was looking a bit long, well that night Bones made Brad go out and start cutting the grass he was complaining about, needless to say Brad thought the grass was always perfect after that.” Leo also noted that “baseball players throughout the county had nothing but good things to say and loved playing on the McGregor diamonds at Co-An Park and they knew that Wayne ‘Bones’ Bondy was the guy that made the experience at Co-An Park a memorable one. We know that ‘Bones’ is looking down on all of us as we celebrate the dedication of Diamond #2 in his memory and know that he is giving a big thumbs up!” Brad noted while his father has been gone for nine years, “we know he’s looking down on us.” He also thanked Co-An Park for recognizing his dad. “The whole Bondy family is very, very grateful,” he said. Richard Meloche acknowledged the family of the late Evelyn Baker by honouring her by dedicating a tree in recognition for her generosity of herself and dedication to the community and Co-An Park throughout the years.

By Ron Giofu The St. John the Baptist Church social justice committee is doing its part to combat human trafficking. Over 40 people attended a recent seminar on the topic at the Columbus Community Hall with Robyn Hodge of Legal Assistance Windsor (LAW)’s “WeFight” campaign on hand to educate those in attendance. Hodge said that young men and women are being trafficked locally, whether that be for sex, labour or other reasons. “As a community, we need to open our eyes so we can help,” said Hodge. Hodge indicated she could meet with as many as six to eight new people each month that are being trafficked. People who are victims of human trafficking are often beaten and their physical demeanor could be guarded. People can’t be forced into accepting help, Hodge added, as there are often circumstances that LAW doesn’t know about that may make the victim feel

Hodge said she will speak to community groups and organizations to further their knowledge of the topic, noting she does about three to six talks per month. “Anyone who calls, I will come,” she said. “That’s what gets the ball rolling.” The group also heard from a person who was the victim of human trafficking. Victoria Morrison told her story of being sent to Winnipeg and the beatings and abuse she endured. Her three months as a victim ended in August 2018 when she was able to escape. Morrison added that it is important to put a face to the issue, so that is why she tells her story. “I think if someone asked if I was OK (while it was happening), it could have stopped it before it got to the level it got to,” she said. Morrison added that many victims are too scared to try and reach out. “It’s important for other people to try and reach out,” she said.

Escape Room & Games Festival returns to Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada this Saturday

By Ron Giofu Those who enjoy escape rooms, games and puzzles will be in their glory this Saturday thanks to the Escape Room and Games Festival. The second annual festival returns to Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. with a total of ten escape rooms for people to choose from. Corrine Ross, visitor experience team leader, said Hidden Trail Escape Rooms and Exodus Escape Rooms out of Windsor are bringing in their mobile escape rooms as is Breakout Escape Rooms out of Kingsville. Hidden Trail will run two mobile escape rooms near the barracks named “The Cell” and “Tiny Tony’s Toy Room” while Exodus Windsor will have two mobile escape rooms on the riverfront named “Picnic” and “Truth or Dare.” Breakout’s will be on the riverfront grounds. In addition to that, Ross noted Fort Malden is creating five of its own escape rooms on site. There will be “Recipe for Escape” in the cookhouse, “The Cure” in the museum with that a nod to the site’s history as an asylum, “Mayhem in the Marquis” in a tent outside, “The Spy Within” in an outdoor escape room and “Confined to the Barracks.” Teams that book an escape room pass can choose up

to five escape rooms to try, Ross noted, up from the original four that people could try because of the increased number of rooms. There are typically two to six members of a team and each member can purchase a pass for $34.30. The escape room passes sold out the week heading up to the festival last year and Fort Malden staff is hoping for the same result in year two. The festival pass will also grant people access to the rest of the festival, though those wanting to attend the festival without trying the escape rooms can still do so by purchasing a festival pass for $9.80. “This year, we’ve added games to the event,” said Ross. Games and activities scheduled are Giant Yahtzee, bowling, checkers, croquet, ring toss, badminton, various board games as well as a water fight area. “Games on the Move Windsor” will also be on hand with their mobile video game theatre that features 28 consoles. Redline Inflatables Party Rentals will also feature sumo wrestling, gladiator joust and UFO laser tag. A “Learn To Escape Experience”, provided by Exodus Escape Rooms, will be called “Skulduggery in the Skullery” and will be available on a first come, first served basis to anyone who wants to try an escape room. It will be available to anyone with a festival pass.

Boblo fire protection services enhanced By Ron Giofu

In order that fire protection services on Boblo Island are adequately addressed, the town is spending $52,000 to try and rectify matters. With high water levels compounding matters and existing concerns that include the river icing up in winter, the money will be spent to retrofit a 1995 truck, have a metal shelter built to protect it and to purchase necessary equipment for when it is housed on the island. Amherstburg fire chief Bruce Montone said it would be housed on municipal land and anticipates that the truck could be on Boblo within 30 days. Getting a fire truck on the ferry now is challenging due to water levels and noted there have been existing concerns already with regard to providing an adequate level of service on the island. The previous council moved to have the old truck stationed on the island, with that being a shortterm solution. Councillor Peter Courtney voted in favour of the recommended option, but had financial concerns as well. He said access is the responsibility of the developer, and asked about whether costs could be mitigated so that costs don’t go to the entire town. It is the responsibility of the town to provide emergency services, CAO John Miceli said, and said access is not denied. “Our equipment can’t get on the ferry,” he said. Miceli added if council wants to look at area-specific levies, administration could do so, but noted “we have a significantly vested interest on the island.” Addressing the emergency concerns would sent a clear message about the town’s commitment, he added. It would cost $15,000 for a temporary metal structure, Montone’s report noted, but Councillor Patricia Simone questioned whether that could be used again once a

long-term solution is enacted. “Could it be moved and used again?” she asked, of the structure. Montone said it could be moved, adding he envisions it could also function as a covered picnic area when the truck is not there. Former councillor Diane Pouget recalled that the previous council voted to have the developer pick up the tab for the shelter, but Miceli stated the shelter was not included in discussions with Boblo and it was the land that was in question. Montone noted the fire master plan would cover long-term solutions, though indicated a multi-purpose station could be built on the island that would be manned by residents of the island. Of the short-term Currently solution passed by council, accepting he said “this is going to resolve 98-99 per cent of new patients our challenges.” and same-day “People over there emergencies! pay a lot of taxes,” said Councillor Michael Prue, himself a Boblo resident. “It’s totally fair the people that pay taxes get the same Dr. Roy Dr. Sandra Dr. Dennis services as everyone else.” Petras Frederick Petras Prue added that Boblo residents are “serious about Call for doing their bit” as it relates appointment: to helping with emergency (519) 713-8985 protection.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 You are juggling many things, Aries. If you are having a difficult time figuring out which balls to drop and which ones to keep in the air, look to Virgo for help. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, many people are counting on you this week and you don’t want to let them down. Recognize that it takes time to see results. Be patient and stay the course.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 There are a few things that you have to get off of your chest, Gemini. Others may not be ready and willing to listen to what you have to say right now, so give it time if need be. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, even though you have a lot to say, you have to make your words count. Select the things you have to say for each specific person and moment in time. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Several different activities and people are vying for your attention, Leo. All of this information can be overwhelming, so you will need to find a quiet area where you can unwind. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You are always one to lend a helping hand, Virgo. So when you need to call in some favors this week, do not let it make you feel like you are taking advantage of anyone. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 New ideas pop into your head and they excite you about future projects, Libra. The only trouble is settling on what you want to do, especially if it involves spending money. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 It is okay to ask for help even when people think you are the strongest one around, Scorpio. Seeking and accepting help is a strength, and others will recognize that. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Look for some more enjoyable recreational activities you can tackle in the weeks to come, Sagittarius. It’s good to change up the scheduling now and again for a different pace. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 An interesting prospect comes your way, Capricorn. You aren’t quite sure what to make of it, so give it a few more days to work out the kinks before responding. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, if you try to fix everyone’s problems, you will only get frustrated. Sometimes those closest to you know what works for them and what doesn’t. Trust their instincts.

A group of 13 hard-working volunteers gathered at Navy Yard Park to again help the Amherstburg Rhododendron Committee. Volunteers learned the proper way to plant these beautiful bushes. It was “out with the old and in with the new,” said Linda Jackson. Under Liz Morneau’s guidance, people learned the proper way to plant rhodos. In all, the Fort Malden Horticultural Society has spent approximately 80 hours in the Navy Yard Park rhodo gardens. Many thanks were given to the volunteers who helped beautify the town. It was especially gratifying to organizers to see young and “old” working side-by-side.

Amherstburg Fire Department welcomes employee with intellectual disability

Max Vigneux has been hired as a fire assistant with the Amherstburg Fire Department. Just some of his duties include cleaning fire trucks. By Ron Giofu Amherstburg fire chief Bruce Montone is a believer in hiring people with intellectual disabilities and is leading by example. The fire department has hired Max Vigneux as a fire assistant through Community Living Essex County’s Career Compass employment service. Montone said they are pleased with the overall progress that Vigneux has made with the fire department since joining a couple of months ago. “His social skills are very good,” said Montone. “We’re super patient in getting

him to where we want him to be.” Montone noted that Canada Day was the first public event that Vigneux attended but that his main duties thus far have been around Fire Station #1. He has been washing fire trucks, mopping floors, helping with inventory and other duties as assigned. “We’re trying to give him a mix of hands-on fire truck duties and some administrative stuff,” he stated. Every person with a disability has needs that are different from others, Montone pointed out, and that patience is required. Rather than focus on how a person is performing a task, the focus

should be on the end result, he said. “We need to be accommodating and open minded that not every job has to be done the same way,” said Montone. Vigneux is slowly being worked into the position, with his hours increasing as the weeks go by. The hope is that he will be able to perform duties at all three fire stations in Amherstburg. Town council approved the position in the 2019 budget with Montone’s desire being to have the position go forward beyond this year. “I will be asking council to make the position permanent,” he said. “I’m going to hopefully demonstrate the benefits to

the organization.” Vigneux is helping to relieve pressure that volunteer firefighters face, as Montone said he will perform duties that firefighters have difficulty managing time-wise. He said by having Vigneux perform tasks instead of calling in someone else, it can improve the fire department’s bottom line. “It has been a pleasure to have him here,” said Montone, who is also a part of Community Living Windsor’s board of directors. “It’s been awesome.” Vigneux said he is part-time right now but is enjoying the time he has been spending working for the Amherstburg Fire Department. “I pretty much like everything,” he said, as he took a break from cleaning a fire truck. “It’s a fun experience. It was through Community Living that I got the chance to work here.” Vigneux added that he has had the opportunity to learn skills he hasn’t had a chance to pick up yet. “There’s a lot more to learn,” he said. Duties depend on the day, Vigneux stated, as “it depends on what is going on.” He added he was “terrified” of fire trucks and their sirens at an early age but has outgrown that and is gaining confidence working with Montone and the Amherstburg Fire Department. “I like everything,” said Vigneux. “I can’t really complain about anything. It’s a great job. I’m just happy to be here.”

! u o y Thank

To be able to say you are born and raised in Amherstburg is a gift. To be able to say you truly love your town & community is a larger gift. It is because of our community, our customers, past, present & future that we are still here. From our humble beginnings under Murray Kennedy, through the years led by my Father Les Thrasher and now here we find ourselves preparing for the 3rd generation and possibly 4th someday. We have seen our shares of ups and downs through the years, have seen many team members pass and retire. This month of August 2019 is all about saying Thank You. 10 years ago this August we signed off from General Motors knowing we would have our hands full with an uphill battle. What we did take comfort in knowing was, that it wasn’t General Motors that made us who we are. It was our staff and our Community. With that in mind we forged ahead. The wealth of knowledge attained through the years is a testament to the many special team Members we’ve been fortunate to work alongside and learn from. This has all been accomplished due to our community and the hard work of our staff to service them. Ourselves or any business for that matter, could not have survived this without a large loyal customer base and caring community. Through the years, we have seen and been a part of this community rising up and lending a hand for a local cause. It is about community and we would not be here without ours. So throughout the month of August, we are giving anyone from our community free car washes every Wednesday 9 AM – 4 PM, also we will be giving some lucky winner their oil change for free, EVERYDAY of August. We will cap this off with a Thank You barbecue on Wednesday Aug 28th 11 AM- 1PM. We will also be giving away 4-5 pretty amazing door prizes on the 28th. These prizes have been bought and packaged from local businesses. So everyone stop in any day in August to fill out a ballot (cashier’s office) for your chance to win one of these prizes and also come out for a hot dog, a hamburger, some chips & drink and a piece of Anniversary cake. This is our 10th Anniversary of Independence and it is because of all of you. One thing we will also be doing in August at our car washes, our community barbecue is asking for donations for a local Family who recently suffered the tragic loss of a Family member. Their Father, her Husband, someone’s Brother, someone’s child, somebody’s loved one. The community lost a local Farmer, and we are hoping to, with our community’s support and love, be able to contribute to this Family in need. Come on Amherstburg, You Helped us & now a neighbor needs our help!

Thank you!

Always Remembered, Never To Forget! 519 736-6481

The one thing that happens to a business going on over sixty years in the making, is it goes through Team Members over those years, those that have mentored us, those that are gone (never forgotten) those that have retired or moved on. Below you will see some of the names of those that have made us who we are today. Some you will remember, some you will say “Wow they worked there” but most of all, they are all part of the Legacy started by Murray Kennedy and my Father Les Thrasher, that we are trying to carry on. I know by mentioning names, there will be some left out, sorry for that, you are all important. Thank You All!

Shannon Pelletier stands with her 1968 Ford pickup (above) while Zachary and Tyler Gillan admire one of the Corvettes (left). Over 700 vehicles took part in the Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy Show with the show seen from various angles (right photos). More photos can be found on the River Town Times’ Facebook page.

Amherstburg goes “car crazy” with over 700 vehicles at annual car show It was the second year that Shannon Pelletier entered her 1968 Ford 100 pick-up in the show, but Pelletier is hardly a stranger to car shows. Noting that she travelled with her father and his vehicles to car shows growing up, Pelletier said it is her turn to enter a vehicle into shows. “I’m in it bonding with my dad,” she explained, joking “he’s living through my truck.” Pelletier said she goes to shows in Bothwell and LaSalle as well as the Amherstburg show, and said she enjoys the local support of them. Of the Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy show, Pelletier added the size is another aspect she is impressed by. “It’s so big,” she said. “It’s one of the biggest we go to.”

Roman Gregory was one of the thousands that came downtown to look at the classic vehicles. “I think it’s pretty good,” he said. “It’s our first one in Amherstburg.” Joined by Nicole Gregory, Roman said they plan on returning to the Amherstburg’s Gone Car Crazy show in future years. “It’s relaxed and it’s free,” he said. “The atmosphere is nice.” Zachary and Tyler Gillan from McGregor enjoyed checking out the Corvettes as did parents Liz and Lee. The McGregor residents said it is an annual event they come to. “We never miss it,” said Liz. “We’re car fanatics.” “We love cars,” added Lee, “all of the old stuff.” Steve Maluske, who co-chaired this year’s show with Scott Elliott, said they were pleased with how

things went overall. Approximately 600 vehicle pre-registered with at least 100 showing up the day of the show, he added. “It went off really well,” said Maluske. “We got in the groove and away we went. We had a good experience for the first show between me and Scott.” Maluske and Elliott took over the chair’s position from Eleanor Renaud, though they thanked Renaud for her guidance. Renaud, Paul’s wife, retired as chair but stayed on as a consultant this year. “Thanks to Eleanor for assisting us all the way,” said Maluske. “The weather really helped. Everyone could hear the music. Everything went well.” There was a meeting earlier this week where the committee discussed this year’s show and started planning for next year. Maluske said they will try and make the show even better.

The Amherstburg Soccer Club concluded its house league season last Saturday with its day of champions. Teams from U4 to U15 participated. By Ron Giofu The house league season is over for teams in the Amherstburg Soccer Club (ASC). The ACS held its “Day of Champions” for its house league division last Saturday morning at Larry Bauer Park. A total of 39 teams participated during the day with teams ranging from the U4 to U15 age divisions. Jim Jariett, vice president of the Amherstburg Soccer Club, said turnout was strong on Saturday and confirmed they had an increase in players over 2018. The ASC had approximately 420 players in the house league division this year, up about 30 players or so over last year. There were also 11 teams in the Amherstburg Fusion travel program with those teams ranging from 10-16 players per team. “Enrolment has been up,” said Jariett. “Our numbers have been up, which is good. I think the word got out that we’re here to stay.” The heavy rainfalls the area had experienced during the spring had an impact on the Amherstburg Soccer

Club, but Jariett noted they were able to rebound. “We had a rough start with the weather,” he said. “We do have to thank the town for prepping the fields and getting them open as fast as they could get them open.” Many games had to be postponed earlier in the season, Jariett added, and that while most were made up later in the season, there wasn’t enough time to get all the game in. “Some games we weren’t able to get to, but we did the best with what we had,” he said. U4 and U6 divisions played Saturday mornings on the artificial turf with U8-U15 teams playing Mondays and Wednesdays. The girls only league played Tuesdays and Thursdays. Board treasurer Nicole Collison noted the Amherstburg Soccer Club is always looking for new board members, coaches and volunteers and people can get involved through their website, found at www.socceramsa. com. There are coaches and referee clinics offered to assist those in getting

involved. The Amherstburg Soccer Club is also partnering with The Fort Fun Centre on an adult 35+ co-ed league this fall. The league would play from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday nights during September and October. Visit the ASC’s website for details.

Also, Fusion travel team tryouts will be held in September with registration opening for the girls only league as the latter hopes to expand in 2020. For more information about the girls only league, contact director of house league Robin Bublick at robin. bublick@hotmail.com.

Sr. Cardinals have less than ideal week on the diamond

Amherstburg on the road this Wednesday in Woodslee By Ron Giofu

The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team were in action last week with a forfeit loss, a loss, and the third game rained out. The Cardinals were supposed to be in Essex Sunday for an afternoon game with the Essex Yellowjackets. The end result ended up as a forfeit loss for the Cardinals. After that game, the Cardinals record was 10-6 in Essex County Senior League play, still good for second place. The first game of the senior Cardinals was supposed to be last Tuesday night in Woodslee against the Orioles’ junior team. However, heavy rain hit that part of Essex County forcing the game to be postponed. The Cardinals resumed play Wednesday night at the Libro Centre and while things looked good early, the Tecumseh Thunder were able to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and came away with a 4-1 victory. Amherstburg got its run in the bottom of the second inning when a force out by shortstop Brady Levack

(Above) Amherstburg’s Brad Lepine (right, 29) slides into third base during last Wednesday night’s loss against the Tecumseh Thunder at the Libro Centre. Cardinals’ shortstop Brady Levack fields a ground ball during the same Essex County Senior League baseball game (right). scored second baseman Cole Lepine from third base. The Cardinals dodged a bullet in the fourth inning when Tecumseh loaded the bases with no outs thanks to two errors and a batter that was hit by a pitch but a foul out and a double play got Amherstburg out of the inning. The Cardinals again avoided damage when the Thunder loaded the bases again in the fifth inning but failed to score.

Tecumseh finally broke through in the sixth inning. They were finally able to string together hits against Amherstburg starting pitcher Mitch Lepine and came away with three runs in that inning. The Thunder added one more in the top of the seventh inning. “We just didn’t get clutch hitting with runners in scoring position,” said Amherstburg’s Mac Ouellette. “That pretty much sums it up.”

Ouellette said Lepine pitched well for the Cardinals but again noted they couldn’t get their bats going when they needed to. “(Tecumseh) had the clutch hits and that was the game,” said Ouellette. “You have to forget about these losses and get back to playing our game.” The Cardinals have one game scheduled this week, and it is on the road Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against the Woodslee Orioles senior team.

AMBA hosts girls slo-pitch playoff tournament Teams came in from as far as Cottam to participate in the weekend tournament, Lippert added. “It’s our year-end wrap-up tournament for all of the girls travel teams,” she said. Of the 31 total teams in the tournament, there were six from Amherstburg with two local girls slo-pitch teams in each of the three age divisions. Results of the weekend tournament were not available as of press time. Lippert added that the girls slo-pitch wrap-up playoff tournament has been held in Amherstburg every two years. It is one of five baseball tournaments that AMBA is hosting this year as one was held earlier in the spring and more coming in late-August and early-September.

Girls slo-pitch teams from around Essex County participated in a wrap-up playoff tournament last weekend at Centennial Park and Malden Centre Park. By Ron Giofu Girls slo-pitch teams from around Essex County converged on Amherstburg last weekend to see which one of them was the best. The girls slo-pitch wrap-up tournament saw games played at both Centennial Park and Malden Centre

Park. “There are 31 teams in the junior, senior and intermediate divisions,” said Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association (AMBA) president Mary Lippert. “For the most part, the junior and senior players played at Centennial Park. The intermediates played at Malden.”

Baker received a Medal of Good Citizenship for all her acts of volunteering. She also served a 12-year term as president of the Essex Steam and Gas Engine Museum, a group that is involved in the preservation of local heritage through the clubs restoration of antique steam and gas engines, tractors and machinery located at Co-An Park. “Evelyn was very active with the McGregor Music Festival raising money to help fight cancer,” Richard noted. “It was wonderful to see her daughter Donna walk in her footsteps, seeing her at the Essex Food Land selling Music

Jamboree tickets where her mom and Madeline Pehleman sat in prior years. It was very touching and an inspiration.” Richard said Baker was “a major part of the community” and pointed out she put a lot of hours into volunteering. “She’s going to be sadly missed,” said Richard. “We appreciate the years she spent with us. Evelyn truly dedicated her life to her fellow man and we thank her family for allowing us to celebrate her achievements today.” Donna Hanson noted it was a proud day for the family. She admitted to getting choked up during the ceremony. “It’s also three months to the day that she died,” explained Hanson.

Essex Region Conservation Foundation looks to plant trees with golf tourney proceeds By Ron Giofu Approximately 127 golfers hit the course at Pointe West Golf Club all to help the Essex Region Conservation Foundation (ERCF). The foundation, the fundraising arm of the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), held its golf tournament recently at Pointe West Golf Club in Amherstburg. Despite a rain delay at one point, golfers still got in their 18 holes, which was followed by the dinner afterward. “This is our 31st annual fundraising tournament for the conservation foundation,” explained ERCA’s director of communications and outreach services Danielle Stuebing. “We’re hoping to raise about $35,000. That will be used for tree planting and restoration in our region. We know that tree planting is one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against climate change.” In addition to the 127 golfers, Stuebing pointed out about another dozen people came to the dinner afterward. “I think people are just really supportive of what we’re doing to help the environment,” she said. Stuebing added that golfers, donors and other supporters have been a big help to the foundation’s projects over the years. She estimated in the last decade alone, the golf tournament has raised about $250,000. “We have representation from all municipalities. There are a lot of council members, including members of our board, mayors, members of the public and business

owners. We’re very grateful for their support of this tournament,” said Stuebing. The next major fundraiser for the ERCF is the bike tour, which is scheduled for Sept. 28. Stuebing noted there are five routes with most Essex County municipalities included. The aim of the bike tour is to not only to showcase the county and the trail system, but to raise another $35,000 with those proceeds earmarked for a community entrance on the Cypher Systems Greenway. That trail runs from Essex to Amherstburg with the location of the new community entrance to be along County Road 15 in Essex. By Haley Rose The idea of cottage country leaves most people picturing still waters, lush forests, serenity, peace and quiet. But in the mind of local teen book author Sharon Ledwith it’s the home of Fairy Falls – a place where nothing ever seems to go according to plan. Ledwith just released the second book in her series “Mysteries of Fairy Falls” with the new novel called “Blackflies and Blueberries.” Fairy Falls was created around Ledwith’s experiences in Muskoka. For 20 years while living and vacationing there she explained she took in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and emotions. Then added the twist of what it would be like if you dropped a teenager with psychic abilities down in the middle of the town to adjust to day to day life. “I didn’t want to lose that ‘small, tourist town’ feeling when I created Fairy Falls. There’s something about going to a tourist town and connecting with the people living there that somehow leaves you feeling better than when you arrived,” Ledwith said. The Mystery of Fairy Falls series will have five books once completed. The newest release follows the journey of Hart Stewart – a city born and bred kid who recently lost his mother. With no one else to turn to the boy learns of a distant relative living in Fairy Falls. He leaves behind the only life he’s ever known in the chance he may again have a home, and a family. As it goes, things take a turn when he arrives in Fairy Falls. He becomes witness to a murder and soon finds himself having to use his psychic power to boost others hopes for justice and uncover the shocking truth about what happened during this murder. Inspiration for characters comes from personal experiences – people she has met, as well as ideas she dreams up. The first two books in the series are also based on jobs Ledwith has worked and encounters she has had. “I’ve always been interested in paranormal and occult, so I decided

to write what interests me and create characters that have a ‘super’ psychic power.” Ledwith’s writing ‘voice’ didn’t happen overnight. In 1995 she joined a writing course where she met a group of women who became her writing group. With the group she completed her first book – a paranormal romance. One of the women in her group made a comment that she hit the 12-year-old characters voice right on. This sparked her into thinking what it would be like to write from a teenager’s perspective. Ledwith decided to pursue the challenge and thought about writing books that would appeal to her son – who at the time was her target audience demographic. Today she finds the young adult genre is still where she thrives. She hopes to continue to build a list of books with modern experiences teens today face, for generations to come. McGregor Music Festival raised $75,000 this year, plans for $80,000 at next year’s show

Continued from Page 2 No major changes are forecast as planning gets underway for the 31st annual McGregor Music Festival either. “We’re not going to change anything,” said LeClair. “Our bands are loyal to us. They are fantastic. We have top bands and we have a raffle table no one else has.” LeClair pointed out their first

donation to the WCCF after their committee formed was $500. “If you are going to raise money, think outside the box,” she advised. Next year’s festival is scheduled for June 14, 2020 at Co-An Park. LeClair indicated they will not rest on their laurels and will look to break their fundraising record once again. “We’re going to strive for $80,000,” she said.

ERCA plans high water level information sessions around Essex County

COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, July 31, 2019 - 27

A visit from a future NHL’er

Four sessions planned around the area Special to the RTT With continued record-high lake and river levels significantly impacting the Windsor-Essex region, the City of Windsor, County of Essex and all regional municipalities, together with the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), will host information sessions for residents. “Since May 30, our region has been under a long-term flood watch, and nearly two dozen active flooding events have taken place,” says Richard Wyma, ERCA’s general manager. “Some shoreline and low-lying areas have been largely under water for months.” The forecast continues to predict water levels at these unprecedented highs, and the serious potential for localized intense rainfall raises additional concerns. “The current situation across the region is unlike any we have experienced in the past,” Wyma adds.1 “Water August , 2019 simply has no place to go.”

These information sessions are intended to identify current and predicted water level impacts, and to help residents to be prepared in the case of a flooding emergency. Presenters will include municipal staff and Emergency Management Coordinators from across the Windsor-Essex region. If you live along the shoreline or in a low-lying, flood-prone area, you may wish to attend one of these sessions : •Monday, August 12, 7:15 – 8:30 p.m. - Atlas Tube Centre (Lakeshore) •Tuesday, August 13, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. - WFCU Centre – Collavino Hall (Windsor) •Wednesday, August 14 – 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Vollmer Centre (LaSalle) •Thursday, August 15 – 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Lakeside Park (Kingsville)
