Bob Probert Ride features two stops in Amherstburg By Jonathan Martin Between 1,500 and 1,800 motorcycles thundered through Amherstburg Sunday for the ninth annual Bob Probert Ride. The event raises money for cardiac care in Windsor-Essex and this year organizers celebrated reaching $1 million in donations. The event’s namesake, Bob Probert, played hockey for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks. Probert died of a heart attack in 2010. Probert’s widow, Dani Probert, along with Zack Kassian of the Edmonton Oilers and retired NHL player Darren Banks, attended the event in Probert’s honour. The event takes a “tremendous amount of planning and a great number of logisitical issues need to be addressed,” said Hotel Dieu-Grace Healthcare spokesperson Bill Marra. There were a near-record number of riders roaring down the streets. “It seems to get a little bigger each year,” Jamey Daehn said. Daehn has volunteered at the event every year since its founding in 2010. “We were super lucky with the weather this year. It seems like every year that’s a big concern. It seems like this is the first weekend in forever that it hasn’t rained.”

Mayor granted extended leave to deal with health issues By Ron Giofu Mayor Aldo DiCarlo has been granted additional time to deal with his health issues. DiCarlo requested a leave of absence as he is under a doctor’s care due to illness and the three month period he is allowed to miss expires July 23. Town council extended his leave by three months effective June 24. Councillor Michael Prue was appointed as the alternate representative to Essex County council and will serve until DiCarlo’s doctor deems him fit to return. The mayor and deputy

mayor from all seven county municipalities comprise county council. Prue said he supported granting DiCarlo an extension but believed there should be a time limit, believing town council has an obligation to the ratepayers. He suggested two to three extra months with a follow up report from either DiCarlo or his physician if he was still unable to return at that time. Councillor Peter Courtney suggested a five-month period, noting that would be consistent with the Municipal Act and its guidelines for a maternity leave. “My heart goes out to the mayor,”

said Courtney. “He was voted in. I think this town is going in the right direction.” Courtney added that the mayor’s position “is the bread and butter of the town as spokesman.” Councillor Donald McArthur believed three months was a “good number” and praised Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche for stepping up in DiCarlo’s absence. “I think Aldo has earned a grace period,” said McArthur. “He’s still answering e-mails, he’s still on Facebook and Twitter. I think he’s had our backs for four years and I think we should have his back now.”

After the meeting, Meloche stated “everybody felt (DiCarlo) has done a good job for the town and he deserves an extension.” Meloche added he doesn’t pry into what DiCarlo’s condition, stating “if he tells me something, fine.” He said his role as deputy mayor is to fill in as acting mayor and that he still keeps in touch with DiCarlo. Meloche said DiCarlo biked to town hall where the two talked for 90 minutes, with Meloche stating the mayor is eager to return. “He’s been stir-crazy the last two months,” said Meloche.

One investigation won’t proceed, other clears administration By Ron Giofu

One request to go to the integrity commissioner for an alleged breach will not proceed, while another investigation has concluded. Town council opted not to move forward with engaging the integrity commissioner on an alleged leak, with a motion made by Councillor Patricia Simone – that was passed by council – stating that due to information received from clerk Paula Parker, that “no further action be taken.” Parker’s written report on the public agenda stated: “It was brought to the attention of the clerk that there was a post on social media indicating that information shared with council in a personal and confidential memo was divulged to an individual outside of the intended recipients. The Integrity Commissioner advised that council should determine whether it wishes to pursue an investigation into the violation of the Code of Conduct.” Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche said the matter was discussed at an in-camera meeting late Monday

afternoon and the decision was made that no further action be taken. “I do not discuss any in-camera item other than a decision was made that no further action is required,” said Meloche. Council also received a report regarding an investigation into administration centring on an alleged breach that occurred under the previous council’s term last September. That investigation was into administration and the allegation that a leak may have came from them regarding an in-camera meeting having to do with the switch of policing services from Amherstburg to Windsor. The investigator concluded no leak came from administration. Town council directed Mayor Aldo DiCarlo to pursue an investigation with DiCarlo engaging Windsor lawyer Jim Renaud on the matter. A report from Parker, on DiCarlo’s behalf, noted the investigation cost $16,469.60. According to the report on Monday night’s agenda, “Mr. Renaud indicates in his report that ‘(t)here was

no leak of confidential information by a member of administration. The leak of information emanated directly from then Councillor Jason Lavigne, who has admitted he was the source of the information given to then APSB Chair Mr. (Bob) Rozankovic.’ Mr. Renaud further states ‘There was no violation of confidentiality of any person, board, association or committee arising from the written materials supplied to Council that was discussed in the September 10, 2018 in-camera meeting.’” Meloche said “there was pressure to have an investigation” into administration with the deputy mayor adding that the report said no leak came from administration. Council received the report with no discussion, with Meloche stating that if council members had concerns, they would have questioned it. “They all felt the report was adequate and moved forward,” he said. When the issue came before the previous council last November, Lavigne denied any wrongdoing.

www.rivertowntimes.com Among those celebrating the town’s new tourism website last Thursday were director of parks and rec Phil Roberts, CAO John Miceli, Councillor Donald McArthur, tourism co-ordinators Sarah Van Grinsven and Kelly O’Rourke, Councillor Patricia Simone, tourism co-ordinator Jen Ibrahim and manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota.

Town launches new tourism website By Ron Giofu

The town’s new tourism website is now active. Visitors and residents alike can now go to www. visitamherstburg.ca for information on festivals, events, accommodations, attractions and other related material. The official launch of the new tourism website was last Thursday morning at the Park House Museum. Councillor Donald McArthur spoke on behalf of the town at the launch and spoke favourably of the new website. “It looks fantastic,” said McArthur, who was joined by Councillor Patricia Simone at the reveal. McArthur said the pictures on the new tourism website are “fantastic” and that Cinnamon Toast New Media, the firm that created the website, had a great product to work with – the town itself. “Amherstburg is the content,” he said. The website is “an amazing vehicle to showcase the community” and McArthur also thanked administration for its efforts in seeing the project through and “getting it across the goal line.” Manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota noted the website will be continuously updated and that the tourism department had a lot to choose from when working with Cinnamon Toast to put content on the site. “We have so many things to offer in Amherstburg,” said Rota. “We didn’t know where to start.” Bronwyn Mondoux and Andrea Dyer from Cinnamon Toast New Media both pointed out that visitors to the site can customize it to view whatever it is they are looking for. Mondoux added that it was “such a pleasure” to work with the town on the website and branding strategy. CAO John Miceli praised the work of the consultants and thanked town council for supporting local tourism. “This allows us to bring Amherstburg to the world,” said Miceli. “Not only will this brand and new website help our town generate brand awareness across key markets, attract an influx of tourism and repeat business, but it will also instill a sense of community pride as we showcase what residents already know about Amherstburg – that it’s an exceptional place to be!” added Mayor Aldo DiCarlo in a press release.

Park House presents “A Day in Outlander” this Sunday Event runs from 11 a.m .-4 p.m., admission by donation

By Ron Giofu It is a day the Park House Museum has been looking forward to for a while. The local museum will be hosting “A Day in Outlander” this Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. with events based on the book series by author Diana Gabaldon. Curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak said it is a new event that they are presenting. “We’re really excited for the event,” she said. “We took

Continued from Page 2

another opportunity to tie the (Park) House’s history to popular culture.” The story of the Macintoch family, who owned the Park House for about 20 years starting in 1804, loosely parallels the stories found in the Outlander novels. The event will feature two afternoon teas, Revolutionary War soldiers, a bagpiper, cooking demonstrations, a presentation on botany and healing and more. “We’ll have the printing press going, tinsmithing demonstrations and storytellers,” said Pouget-Papak.

“We’re doing a lecture on the Battle of Culloden.” Admission is by donation. Visitors are welcome to wear kilts or other costumes that go along with the Outlander book series. For more information, call the Park House Museum at 519-736-2511, visit www.parkhousemuseum.com, www. facebook.com/ParkHouseAmherstburg or www.twitter. com/parkhousemuseum. The Park House Museum is located at 214 Dalhousie St.

By Ron Giofu Community Living Essex County (CLEC) took care of some business last Thursday night, then moved on to its annual awards CLEC’s annual general meeting was held at the Ciociaro Club with Windsor lawyer and Kingsville resident Robert Tomek returning as president while Amherstburg resident Gillian Heisz joins the board as treasurer. CLEC also looked back at the 2018-19 year while also recognizing those who passed away over the last year. Manager of community relations Tony DeSantis commented that “I see this as a large, extended family” and that it was hard not to be touched by seeing the photos of those who passed away in the last 12 months. This year’s eighth annual Bruce Crozier Inspiring Possibilities Memorial Award was presented to Paulina Neufeld while Amherstburg resident Celine LaBrecque, who won the Bruce Crozier Memorial Award in 2018, captured the Jeremy Hart Memorial Bursary this year. The Kevin McMullan Memorial Award, presented to a deserving staff member, was won by Cynthia Castellucci. Outstanding Achievement Awards were presented to those supported in each of the four geographic areas that CLEC operates in. Award winners were recognized for the volunteer work they do and how they help give back to their communities. Joshua Kudroch won the award for the north area (Tecumseh/Lakeshore), while Brianne Taggart won in the south area, which includes Leamington and Kingsville. Darlene Radigan won the award for the west area, which covers Amherstburg and LaSalle. The central area’s award was captured by Ursula Fawdry. The Windsor-Essex Pride Fest won the Community Inclusion Award as they have partnered with CLEC on several initiatives. Employees honoured included Karen Dunn-Peltier, Simone Jones, Laurie Pritchard and Jacqui Warkentin for 20 years of service. Colette Warnock was recognized for her 25 years of service while 30-year awards were presented Rosa Amicarelli, Alison Beetham, April Cahill, Ken Garrod, Laura Lamarche, Sofy

O’Gorman and Rose Renaud. Lakeshore Mayor and former warden Tom Bain brought greetings on behalf of the County of Essex and said the county endorses the job CLEC does in the community. “You do a tremendous job,” said Bain. “You help people reach their full potential. Thank you and keep up the good work.” “I cannot stress how important the services and supports you provide mean to the community,” Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky told the crowd of approximately 180 people. Windsor-Tecumseh MP Cheryl Hardcastle also congratulated the agency on its “jam packed year” and thanked those who give feedback that helps promote inclusion. “That helps me in Ottawa make the changes we all aspire to,” she said. Katrina Verbeek represented Essex MP Tracey Ramsey and noted she is a former CLEC support worker. “The love, hope and optimism you keep in your heart is very admirable,” she said. Greetings were also brought from the Ministry of Community & Social Services, CLEC’s parent group Ensemble and New Day, the self-advocate group overseen by CLEC.

Third place winner John Dufour was absent. DeHetre shows his first place winnings (right). By Ron Giofu The Ribfest is a few weeks away but rib lovers got a preview recently thanks to Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157. The Legion held a rib cookoff with five judges sampling ribs from eight entries. In the end, the ribs prepared by Tim DeHetre came in first place with Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission president Tim McAllister coming in second place. A three-way tie for third place between Deborah “Pinky” Barnett, John Dufour and Marlou Cross was decided by a cut of the cards, with Dufour taking the prize. “I really appreciate it,” DeHetre said of the top

prize. “It’s very nice. I’m glad I participated.” McAllister added “it was a lot of fun to do this. I take this seriously and I like to be in competitions like this.” Dufour was absent from the event. Other participants included George London, Tina Dufour and Don Masse. The cookoff was organized by Ron Fryer. Fryer had organized similar events in Amherstburg but brought it to the Legion for the first time. Fryer added that it was a fun event and noted the event ended up selling out as 100 tickets were sold including take-out orders. Fryer also thanked the kitchen staff and those who assisted him in presenting this year’s rib cookoff at the Legion.

Canada Day celebrations returning to Amherstburg next Monday Full slate of activities planned for Toddy Jones Park and Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada

By Ron Giofu Next Monday is a big day for Canadians with big celebrations planned in Amherstburg. Canada’s 152nd birthday will be marked in town with a number of events around Toddy Jones Park

ir

and Fort Malden National Historic Site. Running Flat gets the action started with the annual Canada D’Eh Run/Walk with this year seeing a world record being attempted. Organizers are trying to ensure the record is set locally for most people doing a 5K run/walk in moose antlers is set in Amherstburg. Road closures start for that at approximately 8:30 a.m. with the course starting in front of Fort Malden and working its way to Dalhousie St. where the turnaround point is the Blue Haven Motel. The kids’ race is at 9 a.m. with the 5K run/walk shortly after the kids race is complete. More information is available at www.runningflat.com. The town’s Canada Day festivities take over both Toddy Jones Park and Fort Malden National Historic Site this year. Tourism co-ordinator Jen Ibrahim noted the town is working with Bike Windsor-Essex with the latter offering a bike valet service throughout the day for those who cycle to the events. “Bike Windsor-Essex does this routinely at festivals and events,” said Ibrahim, adding the group will also present a free bike rodeo for kids from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The public is also encouraged to dress up their bikes with a Canada Day theme. People can park at Sutton Funeral Home and ride over if they choose, Ibrahim added. “Our theme this year is Amherstburg in Motion at Toddy Jones Park,” she said. “We are working with the Libro Centre, who will be showcasing their programs with activities.” There will also be a showing of “Amherstburg’s Mightiest Machines” with town vehicles including

police cruisers, a Zamboni, the street sweeper, tractors, backhoes, school buses, lift trucks and more on hand for people of all ages to experience. Inside Fort Malden, there will be a wide range of cultural activities including bands representing various countries. “We are bringing back the citizenship court for 2019,” said Ibrahim. “People can witness the official ceremony (at 2 p.m.) if they choose. We are pairing that with live cultural performances this year.” Other entertainment will include pony rides, live entertainment, mini-golf, crafts and, of course, fireworks to conclude the evening. Food trucks will also be on hand for people to purchase from. Big Louie and the Band and Two Years Apart are schedule to perform. Opening ceremonies are at 11 a.m. at Fort Malden. People are also encouraged to bring their own water bottles as OCWA is providing a free filling station. For more information, visit www.visitamherstburg.ca or call 519-730-1309.

“Birdies & Bogies for Belle Vue” raises funds for historic home “Nine & Dine” tournament raises an estimated $1,450 towards Belle Vue Conservancy’s efforts By Ron Giofu Golfers hit the links recently in support of the 200-year-old Belle Vue house. The Belle Vue Conservancy’s third annual “Birdies & Bogies for Belle Vue” was held at Sutton Creek Golf Club with 46 golfers taking part in the event, also dubbed a “nine and dine” as nine holes were played prior to the steak dinner. Organizer Meg Reiner, a member of the conservancy, said it went “really well.” “We got very lucky with the weather. The golfers are very happy going out with a cart,” she said. Many of the golfers were returnees from past years she said, added Reiner, and that the “nine and dine” format was brought back as well. The first year was a full 18-hole tournament with the ninehole format brought in last year. “I think people like the nine-hole Friday night format. It’s more casual,” she said. “People preferred the ninehole tournament so I kept it.” In addition to door prizes, golfers received shirts with the Belle Vue Conservancy logo on the front and a photo of Belle Vue on the back. Reiner believes that will give the fundraising efforts more exposure, particularly if people are curious as to what the house is on the back of the shirt.

Winners at the Belle Vue Conservancy’s “Birdies and Bogies for Belle Vue” golf tournament were Dylan Jaber, Zachary Reiner, Hunter Dufour and Macaul Reiner. Tournament organizer Meg Reiner is at right.

Reiner added she updated golfers on Belle Vue and the status of renovations as they signed up, and she noted they have completed the new roof and are now raising money for the windows and exterior enhancements to the building. Michael Prue, a conservancy member and town councillor, thanked the participants for helping to raise money for Belle Vue. He also praised Reiner for her efforts in organizing the golf

St. Joseph School teacher retiring after 31-year career Rene Bujold spent the last 27 years of his career at the River Canard Catholic elementary school By Ron Giofu A trip to the grocery store led to a major career decision for a St. Joseph School teacher. Rene Bujold is retiring after a 31-year career and while attending a retirement workshop didn’t result in his decision, the grocery store trip in March did. “I came back one night from Zehrs, put my bags down on the counter and said ‘I’m done.’ I knew I was finished,” said Bujold. “I was one of those things where I just knew.” While admitting he’ll miss the students, Bujold feels great about his decision. He celebrated with his colleagues last Friday evening at the K of C Hall in River Canard and will be the subject of celebrations at the school this week. “I had a great run – 27 years at St. Joe’s and four years before that at other places. St. Joseph is a family,” he said. “It’s a great feeling and there’s lots of love from the community.” Bujold believes he’s pretty much done it all at the River Canard elementary

Rene Bujold (foreground, seated) has retired after 31 years of service as a Catholic elementary teacher. He spent the last 27 years as a teacher at St. Joseph School in River Canard. His colleagues had a party for him at the K of C Hall in River Canard last Friday afternoon.

school. “I’ve taught everything from Grade

1 to 8 with every combined class in between,” he said. “I think what I’ll

miss the most is all the hugs from the kids.” Bujold also coached a number of sports and took part in music and other programs outside the classroom. “Those extracurriculars is really what I’m going to miss,” he stated. The retirement bash Friday night was a surprise to him with Bujold stating he is retiring with no regrets. “I did all I could possibly do at the school,” he said. “I love being a Catholic teacher, I wouldn’t do anything else, but I’m done.” Just because Bujold is retiring doesn’t mean he won’t be busy. Bujold pointed out he has rental properties to look after, family members to visit and a trip with family to Japan for the 2020 Summer Olympics. “The community has been incredible to me,” he added. “St. Joes has been my family for 27 years.” Bujold believes he’ll see his colleagues again, and joked about where that might be. “I’m sure I’ll see them all at Zehrs.”

WETRA receives donations towards new project Recently Western Secondary School teacher, Glen Holden, heard that WETRA was working on a new project and wanted to get his students involved. Holden got a group of his students in the welding and manufacturing classes to help build two wheelchair accessible picnic tables for the greenspace outside WETRA’s property. “I think it’s beneficial to the kids to be able to see the finished product being used by children who are less fortunate than others,” Holden said. With help from the Solcz Family Foundation donating $250,000, WETRA is well on their way to making the greenspace - Barnyard Friend’s, a reality. This space will be used for riders, volunteers, staff and community members to enjoy lunch while being in nature, closer to the animals. Mills would like to extend their appreciation for the donations so far and looks forward to working closely with these two organizations even more in the future to complete this project.

By Haley Rose While most people would not willingly go close to, yet dare to climb on, a 1,000-pound animal, the Windsor Essex Theraputic Riding Association (WETRA) is continuing to prove this to be the answer for so many people. Western Secondary School is now helping WETRA in its mission. “It brings people out of their shell when they can interact and ask questions about an animal that size,” said WETRA executive director Becky Mills. Since 1971 WETRA has been providing horse therapy services for people with physical limitations to help improve their quality of life. Within the last ten years the non-forprofit group has also realized the emotional and mental stability that their programs provide. “The biggest reward of doing the job I do is knowing that we have a place in our community where everyone is welcome. There is possibility for anyone, with the help and support of our volunteers,” said Mills.

A group of students from Western Secondary School were at the WindsorEssex Therapeutic Riding Association (WETRA) recently where they donated two wheelchair accessible picnic tables.

These volunteers are not the only people dedicating their time and efforts to help continue the success of this organization.

WETRA currently has 150 clients who visit the facility weekly for one-hour riding sessions. These sessions are run with the help of 200 volunteers.

Golf Ontario’s Men’s Mid-Amateur champion crowned at Pointe West

Charles Fitzsimmons captured the 2019 Golf Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur championship (left) while Fitzsimmons and second and third place finishers Philip Arci and Simon McInnis pose with Pointe West staff and volunteers.

By Ron Giofu One of the more prestigious men’s amateur tournaments that Golf Ontario presents made a stop at Pointe West Golf Club last week. Charles Fitzsimmons of the Thornhill Club captured

the Men’s Mid-Amatur championship by shooting six-under par (210) for the week, one stroke better than Philip Arci of King’s Riding Golf Club (211) and two strokes better than Simon McInnis of Mississauga (212). The win gave Fitzsimmons his second championship in recent weeks as he also won the Canadian University championship. Fitzsimmons said Pointe West was in great shape with the greens being the best he has played on this year. He thanked the volunteers and members for their work during the tournament. “I was really just trying to hit great shots and see what happens,” said Fitzsimmons. Noting he usually just tries to concentrate on hitting the best shots he can, Fitzsimmons noted his caddy and

girlfriend were keeping him updated that he was in a tight battle for the top. A good chip shot on the 17th hole on Thursday’s final day helped him clinch the title. “It’s right up there,” he said of the most recent win. “It’s one of the biggest victories of my life.” Mike Kelly, executive director of Golf Ontario, said it was an outstanding tournament and was played at a “hidden gem.” “They should be very proud of what they have here,” Kelly said of Pointe West. “Thanks to events like this, a lot of new people are going to find out about it.” Rick Schmidtgall, director of golf at Pointe West, was pleased with how things transpired. “The tournament went really well. The first two days was fabulous weather,” he said. Rain and wind played a factor on the third day, he believed, but the tournament went well overall. Golfers ranging in age from their mid-20’s up into their low 60’s were able to participate with Schmidgall stating “they all have to have an eight-handicap or lower.” Golfers came from around Ontario with some coming from as far as Sudbury, Kingston, Ottawa and Belleville. “A lot of them are raving about Amherstburg and our area,” said Schmidtgall. “A lot of them are saying this area is a hidden gem.” Loriann Vrabel, director membership, sales and service, added that a gentleman from Orangeville said he liked the small town feel and was now considering this area as a place he may retire to. Schmidtgall said the tournament was a big event for Pointe West. “It’s been a while since we’ve hosted an event of this magnitude,” he said. “Our hope is to host more of these every few years.”

Local goalie visits alma mater to inspire students University of Toronto goalie Erica Fryer of Amherstburg speaks to Stella Maris School students Despite playing well in her first season at U of T, Fryer is taking nothing for granted and is working extensively over the summer training with goalie coach Perry Wilson. “Next season is a new season. You have to work hard to gain your spot again and prove you’re the number one goalie,” said Fryer. “It’s all fair game.” Admitting that public speaking at schools is new to her, Fryer said she wanted to encourage youth to put in the work and not let anyone try and stop them. “To get where I am took a lot of hard work and dedication,” the kinesiology major added.

DELTA DRIVING

Learn to drive the easy way! Erica Fryer shows medals she has won over the years during her hockey career.

Stella Maris School graduate and current University of Toronto women’s hockey team goalie Erica Fryer speaks to students at Stella Maris last Tuesday afternoon. Fryer inspired the students to follow their dreams and continue to work hard. By Ron Giofu Michael DiPietro isn’t the only goalie that graduated from Stella Maris School and is doing good things.

Another former Stella Maris student recently returned to the school to not only tell her story about what she is doing on the ice, but to inspire the current students to pursue their goals. Erica Fryer, 18, is attending the University of Toronto and went to Stella Maris armed with stories and messages about her hockey travels. She took the opportunity to come back to Stella Maris after recently being approached by a teacher at the school. “I’m pretty honoured to showcase my experiences and give these kids hope their dreams can come true with hard work and dedication,” said Fryer. Fryer showed videos, answered questions and tried to be a positive role model for the Stella Maris students. She noted her University of Toronto team made it to the OUA finals this past season and came in sixth at the national tournament. “I played the whole second half and a few games in the first half for a total of 18 games,” she said.

Some Guys Who Love to Sing sing at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Amherstburg last Sunday. The concert also featured The Harbour Light Singers. By Jonathan Martin

e

Dozens of music-lovers packed into St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon for its Chorale Spring Fling (well, early summer). Some Guys Who Love to Sing and the Harbour Light Singers rang out some upbeat acapella tunes. Refreshments were served in the church’s banquet hall. The event was free to the public, but donations were accepted. “We always have something music-related going on, Matthew Kulbacki, St. Andrew’s music director, told RTT. “This is a great environment to do it in, too. There’s never any pressure. It’s just about getting

people together to enjoy the music. Sue Blaney leads the Harbour Light Singers. The group is a seniors’ chorus. The oldest member is 92. “We all get on each other in practice to improve, she said. “Once we’re up there, though, there’s nothing we can do about how it turns out, so why worry? We just enjoy performing. Some Guys Who Love To Sing told a story in their performance. Using classic tunes, they sang the tale of Scott, from birth to death. It had ups and downs loves and losses. The final song was one directed toward the audience, wishing them a life full of music.

The event ran out of the Vollmer in LaSalle and here at St. Peter’s ACHS College School here in Amherstburg. This year we also had several 2004 players considered to be future prospects for the O.H.L. draft.

Every day in some small way, Memories of you come our way, Though absent you are ever near, Still missed, loved, always dear, Thinking of you today and always. “It’s Been A Long, Long Time”

Rotary welcomes Favot as new president SACU holds walk Continued from Page 6

Donaldson pointed out the Rotary Club of Amherstburg raised $29,500 in funds over the past year with $28,500 given away. She noted that last year’s Ribfest drew 15,000 people and raised $18,500. Other events that local Rotarians were involved with included golf tournaments, Hogs for Hospice, polio fundraisers including a karaoke night, and fish fries. They also raised $10,000 with the help of the Montreal Canadiens Alumni for Amherstburg Community Services (ACS). The club also maintained its annual traditions of raising funds for Easter Seals and donated $1,580 to international projects. The Rotary Club is also presenting free summer movie nights at the Libro Centre June 29, July 27 and Aug. 25. Residents can vote on movie selections by calling the town’s recreation department at 519-736-5712 or by visiting www.amherstburg.ca. “We’re looking for this to be a huge night in Amherstburg to get people to come together,” said Donaldson. Donaldson also gave credit to Hazen Price, a member of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg for over 70 years.

Over the past nine years the group has grown and now supports 170 children. “We provide free education for these kids that they would have never afforded,” said Rutgers. The group has followed some of their first students all the way to secondary school. The school is built in the middle of a sugar cane field in the village of Buwundo. SACU is supported in part by Faith Reform Church in Kingsville and its volunteers. Other directors include Ingrid Silvaggio-Heugh, Rick and Kathy Vriesen, Betty Westfall and Elaine Johnson. “I was lucky enough to go to Africa, to Uganda, to see the school,” said Rutgers. The group raises money through various fundraisers including a gala, garage sale and sponsorships ($350 to sponsor a child) and their newest fundraiser – a Walk For Wisdom. Rutgers challenged her fellow directors to raise $1,000 each in their first-ever walk held recently at Seacliff Park in Leamington. “We far surpassed my expectations,” said Rutgers. “My church, Faith Reform, took up a second collection this morning, so we have to add that money as well. We’ll do this again for sure. People wanted to be involved and appreciate what we’re doing,” said Rutgers on the sunny Sunday of the walk. The money raised from the walk will go directly towards the education fund. Sunday school students from Faith Reform also participated in the walk. Ingrid Silvaggio-Heugh of Amherstburg joined the group in 2012 after she retired from teaching.

“I will be forever grateful to Hazen,” she said. “He reminded me about Rotary fellowship and what is important.” Donaldson also thanked Rotarians Dan and Jean Hunt for their support. “I am stronger now because of your friendship and advice,” she said. Paul Harris Fellow awards went to Rotarians and individuals the Rotary Club has partnered with in recognition of contributions to the club and community. Rotarians Favot, Terry Hall, Susanne Bergeron and Rick Daly were honoured as was Price, with the latter receiving his level eight pin. Wes Ewer was also recognized for his efforts, particularly helping to organize the Montreal Canadiens Alumni game. District Governor-elect John Chambers stated there are over one million Paul Harris Fellows in the world. He told Rotarians and guests to “do the right thing.” “You are all leaders and people look up to you so do the right thing,” he said. “It’s the little things you do in the community and you do them well.” The Rotary Club of Amherstburg also installed its president-elect for the 2020-21 year as John Sutton will become president next year.

Sunday rose to a sunny 24 degrees. The bikers made four stops on their journey through the county after lifting their kickstands at Thunder Road Harley Davidson. The first was at the Fort Fun Centre, the second at Colchester Bar and Grill, the third at Wolfhead Distillery and the last at Ciociaro Club. Marra said more than $150,000 was raised Sunday. In total, $500,000 has gone toward the catheterization laboratory at the Ouellette campus, the Bob Probert’s family has invested in the cardiac rehabilitation centre on Prince Road and a cardiac wellness and rehabilitation centre is set to be added $24-million sportsplex expansion to the Tecumseh Arena, which will be named after the late NHL legend. House Youth Centre raises about $1,500 through golf tourney

SUBMITTED PHOTO

The House Youth Centre held its annual golf tournament at Sutton Creek Golf Club. The winning team was T.J. McWhinnie, Jon MacLellan Dan Stein and Ted Jacob. Closest to the pin was Garnet Fletcher. Longest Drive was Brett Salter. By Ron Giofu Weather may have taken a slight toll on attendance numbers at The House’s annual “Community Cup” golf tournament, but those who were there were happy to help. Charlene Houle of ACCESS County Community Support Services, an

organization under the same umbrella as The House, said that 48 golfers registered but that number was brought down to 38 golfers thanks to cancellations due to illness or backyard flooding. Jessica Jarvis, program co-ordinator at The House, said like most organizations, they have been impacted by the cooler and rainier weather the

region has been experiencing this year. Despite the weather, Jarvis indicated they were pleased with the support. “It’s really good and we always have regular golfers that come out every year,” said Jarvis. There were two new teams in the tournament this year and Jarvis said most of the teams in the “Community Cup” golf tournament have some sort of connection to The House Youth Centre. The tournament has been “going on for decades,” said Jarvis, and people who went through there as youth or took part as volunteers often come back to the tournament to have fun and help out. All proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit programming at The House. An estimated $1,500 was raised at the tournament “It’ll keep the doors open at The House,” said Jarvis. Both Houle and Jarvis praised Sutton Creek Golf Club for their help in planning and running the tournament. “Big kudos to Sutton Creek. They really know how to run a tournament,” said Jarvis.

Town council adopted a tagline in February but scrapped it recently with subsequent consultation with Cinnamon Toast leading to an additional $5,600 charge. At present, there is no official tourism tagline.

Amherstburg Soccer Club hosts ECSL festival

The Amherstburg Soccer Club hosted an Essex County Soccer League festival last weekend at Larry Bauer Park. Amherstburg Fusion U8 (right), U9 and U10 (left) teams were in action. By Ron Giofu Competitive soccer clubs from around the area got together over the weekend at Larry Bauer Park to match their skills against one another. The Amherstburg Soccer Club and its Fusion travel

program hosted an Essex County Soccer League (ECSL) festival with youth teams gathering from around the region. “Luckily, we’ve got good weather,” commented ASL president Terry Sawchuk. “We’ve had a total of 48 teams between both days and approximately

1,000 people in the area, which is great. Hopefully we were able to get some spin-off business in the community.” Amherstburg had U8, U9 and U10 teams in the festival. Teams came from around Windsor-Essex County and Sawchuk said the bulk of the soccer action was for developmental purposes. There are no official scores or statistics taken until players get to the U13 level. “They’re allowed to make mistakes,” said Sawchuk. The festival is one of the biggest things the Amherstburg Soccer Club hosts, he added, and that it was only the second festival in the area this season. The frequent rainfall events the area has been having have impacted festivals as either the rain has been coming down when the festivals were supposed to have happened or left the fields in an unplayable condition. The Amherstburg Soccer Club will hold its house league wrap-up July 27. Sawchuk indicated the ASL has had an increased number of teams and participants this season.

Sr. Cardinals in action twice last week By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team hit the field twice last week in Essex County Senior League action. The Cardinals hit the field at the Libro Centre last Wednesday night where they came away with a 5-1 victory over the defending league champion Harrow Blues. Amherstburg scored one in the bottom of the first inning and with the score tied at one in the bottom of the third, Josh Sikich’s RBI single put the Cardinals in front 2-1. The senior Cardinals broke it open in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs. Mitch Lepine’s sacrifice fly scored Josh Slaney with Brad Lepine following it up shortly thereafter with a two-run double. “I don’t think we beat (Harrow) for a couple of games dating back to last year,” said Amherstburg’s Nick Price. “In the first inning, we got the lead and that’s the first time this year we’ve done that, I think. It’s always good to get on top.” Price added they have been waiting for an inning like the sixth inning all season and hopes that momentum will continue. The Cardinals were missing some players Wednesday night, but having limited depth hasn’t been the norm for them in 2019. “This year, we have a deep team which we’re not used to,” said Price. “We have 16 guys on the roster and everyone is going to contribute. The bench guys got to contribute (Wednesday night). We know they can contribute. Let’s keep it going.” Amherstburg travelled to Lacasse Park in Tecumseh last Friday night for a game against the Thunder 18U team. The result was not available as of press time. The Cardinals are in action once this week, a Wednesday night home game against the Woodslee Orioles junior team. Game time at the Libro Centre is 7:30 p.m.

Amherstburg’s Nick Price slides into second during last Wednesday’s game versus Harrow.
