Miracle League of Amherstburg marks 10th anniversary By Ron Giofu The Miracle League of Amherstburg officially celebrated its tenth anniversary season last Saturday with a game against area First Responders. A group of Miracle League “all stars” squared off against a team filled with police officers, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics and town council members in a friendly game to mark the anniversary season. The afternoon also saw the dedication of the new wheelchair swing next to the Miracle League diamond at the Libro Centre. “We didn’t know it was going to grow this big, this fast,” said Miracle League board president Chuck Bondy, “but we still think there is a need for it.” The Miracle League of Amherstburg has 160 players on nine teams and Bondy noted that while there is a lot of work that board members and other volunteers do during the week, seeing the smiles at the ballpark every Saturday makes it worth it.
Hunter, the Miracle League mascot, pushes Megan Kelly on the new Liberty wheelchair swing that was dedicated last Saturday as part of the Miracle League’s tenth anniversary celebration.
“The board of directors is fantastic,” said Bondy. “If it wasn’t for them, the donors and the volunteers, this wouldn’t be possible. That’s what makes it a success.” Michele Vigneux, one of the board members, noted her son Max found a place to play when Miracle League was founded and believed other parents who have children with physical and intellectual disabilities can feel the same way. She agreed with Bondy that it has grown substantially in its first decade and that they have no plans on stopping. “We’re dreaming big and we’re never going to stop dreaming big,” she said. “I think (Saturday) is as exciting as the day we started. Families are looking for things for their kids to do. Miracle League is one of those things.” Vigneux believed Amherstburg should celebrate the fact it has the first Miracle League diamond in Canada. Movati Athletic made a donation of $25,000 to the Miracle League during Saturday’s game, with co-owner Chuck Kelly stating the fitness company gives back to the communities they operate in. “It’s a great cause and we’re following in the footsteps of our founder Al Quesnel,” said Kelly.

Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 holds Grave Decoration Day
Veterans and Legion members remembered as part of annual event By Ron Giofu It was a morning to remember not only those who served, but also those who were part of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157. The local Legion held its annual Grave Decoration Day Sunday morning in both Rose Hill Cemetery and St. John the Baptist Cemetery where veterans and Legion members were remembered as Legionnaires, members of the #202 Fort Malden Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and Knights of Columbus and other dignitaries were on hand to place Canadian flags on their graves. Capt. Jeff Turner read the names of Legion members who have passed away in the last year and said it is important on days like Grave Decoration Day to remember them. Councillor Donald McArthur, who was joined by Councillor Patricia Simone at the event, said it was a day to remember all Legion members. McArthur cited the importance of Legions in communities such as Amherstburg. “They help make communities vibrant,” he said. “They help make communities vital.” McArthur also thanked the local cadets, stating that they are going

Police payout issue ongoing after town council votes down motion By Ron Giofu If there is to be any more severance or top-up pay going to members of the former Amherstburg Police Service, it won’t be coming soon. Town council met in-camera after the May 27 regular council meeting and when they emerged, Councillor Peter Courtney moved “that administration be directed to pay $31,852.80 in severance and $7,013.98 in salary top up to the individuals discussed in in-camera.” However, only Courtney and Councillor Patricia Simone voted in favour with Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and councillors Marc Renaud, Donald McArthur and Michael Prue voting against. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo was absent from the meeting. Courtney said that everyone voted as they saw fit and that he was disappointed with the outcome. He added that it is the way democracy works. “We’re a team,” said Courtney. “Everyone is entitled to their vote.” There was information given that Courtney said he believed merited revisiting and brought his motion forward in public session. He added that, due to the meeting being in-camera, he couldn’t go into further details. “I respect council’s decision at the end of the day,” he said. Courtney wishes the issue over police severance and top-up pay would have already been settled. “I think it’s very sad on how its unfolded,” he stated, “and how it has taken so long to resolve the issue of police service payouts. I just wish it was all behind us.” Meloche acknowledged he voted against the motion and stated that administration reviewed the matter and got a legal opinion. “It was the opinion of administration, which council supported, that we weren’t in favour of paying any more money,” said Meloche. “Our opinion is that they weren’t entitled to that money.” The deputy mayor stated there is always recourse if someone doesn’t like a council decision. “Everything was evaluated on its own merit,” said Meloche. “As far as we’re concerned, the police officers received the severance pay they were entitled to.” Const. Steve Owen, vice president of the former Amherstburg Police Association, did not agree with council’s decision. “We first and foremost would like to thank Councillor Courtney and Councillor Simone for understanding their responsibility as council, now that the Amherstburg Police Service Board was disbanded. Since council disbanded the police services board prior to all matters being resolved, council is now responsible for any matters that arise,” said Owen, in an e-mail. “Councillor Courtney was very well versed in the matter and it was evident by Councillor Simone’s support, that he had it right in bringing his motion to council. It’s very unfortunate that the rest of council could not understand their responsibilities acting in the absence of a police services board.” Owen pointed out Simone was also a “long time police services board member.” “The Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) who approved the disbandment of the police service was told by the town Dec. 27, 2018 that all financial matters were resolved, but that obviously was not the case,” said Owen. “The association and its members have been in constant communication with the town to determine the status of the monies that are owed. Often, weeks have gone by without responses.” According to Owen, the remaining severances are approximately 0.3 per cent of what has been paid out to date. “It has been a long drawn out process for all of the former officers to receive what they are owed, and now it will be even longer. All of the money was supposed to be paid out the first week of January 2019. Here we are five months later and there is still over $38,000 remaining to be paid. It is disappointing that

as a result of this recent council vote, the association must now take legal action against council in order to get what is owed based on our collective agreement and the arbitration ruling made Oct. 17, 2018. Now in addition to the severance costs, there will also be legal costs associated with having the issue heard in the courts.”

Zoning for new Dalhousie St. hotel goes ahead hotel, with the possibility it could end up smaller than 91 rooms. Prue suggested steps such as a two-storey parking garage, purchasing the Beer Store site or putting parking under the hotel but expanding the parking lot to a Ramsay St. lot that Amico owns seemed to satisfy the councillor and others around the table. Prue originally called the rezoning request “shortsighted.” “We are going to make a planning decision that is not logical and will haunt us,” he said. “I want this to be
By Ron Giofu Town council opted to approve zoning for the proposed new Dalhousie St. boutique hotel, but the resolution was passed only after a councillor’s concerns were alleviated. Councillor Michael Prue’s concerns stemmed from the 78 spots proposed for the Dalhousie St. site, as the new hotel could have 91 rooms should it be developed to its maximum size. The site is owned by Amico with talks underway with providers to operate the
planned properly. You only get one shot to do it right.” Cindy Prince, vice president of development with Amico, said they are not in the hotel business thus that is why they are negotiating with other operators. She said Amico’s consultants have told them “the parking ratio is sufficient,” adding the hotel could be anywhere from 52-90 suites. Pertaining to Prue’s suggestion about the Beer Store lands, Prince said that is owned by three retired lawyers out of Toronto and that Amico is trying to
make a deal for the property. Councillor Peter Courtney was concerned about being able to accommodate people in the downtown core during events but Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche believed “we have handled parking in this town” during large festivals in the past. Council passed the motion moving the rezoning forward with the acknowledgement the Ramsay St. lot could be used if necessary. Prince noted that Amico couldn’t move forward without the zoning bylaw amendment.

Former Verdi Club vice president gives his views As a former administrator of the former Verdi Club it saddens me to watch its legacy come to an end. The Verdi was once a proud monument to the Italian immigrants of the Amherstburg area. It was constructed by an abundance of hard labor and will power from original first generation immigrants. Its’ conception began in the back garage of the then, DeLuca Construction building. A couple times a week a few men would congregate after a hard days’ work at the plants and socialize in card playing and beverages. As members and interest grew it became
obvious they had outgrown the Deluca Garage. Under the leadership of Orlando DeLuca a free standing structure was erected and given the Giuseppe Verdi Club name. Attendance and involvement eventually became a family affair. With further progress a constitution with full council members was developed. With immigrant tenacity and bare knuckle work it soon became a viable establishment not only for members to play cards and socialize but a community hall for large functions becoming famous for its elaborate meals prepared by the immigrant wives. Its success was a tribute to the early local immigrants

After reading the letter entitled “Residents voice concerns with noise from the Legion,” I was curious about how loud the “noise” really was. I walked over to Wayne & Joanne Jackson’s home two blocks away in Amherstburg. As I walked towards their home, the “noise” was quieter. When I reached their home, I could barely hear any “noise” on their front yard, never mind their back yard and facing the opposite direction, which is even farther away! Joanne told me “well, it’s really loud when we walk by the Legion and the music is playing.” I question that if the music is that loud, how would they ever hear any profanities? Also, they say the band is playing to a small group on a small patio. The Legion has the largest patio in Amherstburg and the seating capacity is about 90 people. The music has not gotten any louder since Duffy’s closed. We have had mostly the same bands over the years. —Deborah Barnett Amherstburg

Fire chief confident in Amherstburg’s flood preparedness In case of flooding, Amherstburg’s fire chief believes the town is as ready as it can be. However, Bruce Montone cautions that if Lake Erie wants to move into the town, there’s little that anyone can do to stop it. Montone pointed out that the town is making every preparation it can should flooding occur, but said there is information on the fire department’s website that can help residents stay prepared. Tips to minimize water damage include ensuring lots are properly graded so that water can drain away from basement walls; repairing sidewalks, patios, breakwalls, patios, decks and driveways so that water doesn’t pool close to the home; landscape the yards and gardens so that vegetation will minimize soil erosion; consider window well covers; making sure downspouts extend three to six feet and drain in a direction away from homes; using a rain barrel to catch runoff; regularly cleaning and maintaining eavestroughs; keeping storm drains near homes clear of leaves and debris, repairing and placing roof if shingles are deteriorating or missing; and hiring a licensed plumber to ensuring the weeping tile is in good working order. There are also other tips the fire department’s website provides including installing backwater valves, investing in water leak sensors, keeping floor drains clear of obstructions, sealing cracks around windows, installing shelves to keep items off of basement floors, not pouring greases or oils down drains, minimizing home water use during heavy rainfalls, raising air conditioning units and generators above flood levels and protecting HVAC systems. All tips and advice can be obtained at www.amherstburgfire.com, www.amherstburg.ca or www.talktheburg.ca. The town has also acquired thousands of sandbags, with Montone pointing out that people who live near the water’s edge have been claiming them at public works. Amherstburg acquired 30,000 of the region’s 132,000 sandbags with Montone stating that people can fill them at public works’ south yard in Malden
Fire chief Bruce Montone shows a map of the town as he discusses how the municipality is preparing for a possible flooding situation. Centre. He pointed out each bag weighs about 40 lbs. when full so people need to be aware of their vehicle’s ability to haul them. Sandbags are available for everyone who lives on the water’s edge from County Road 41 to Malden Road with people having to show identification to prove their residency. “The sandbags is certainly something they can do in preparation,” said Montone. However, Montone said if Lake Erie wants to find its way into town, it will still do so. “I don’t want to mislead people. There aren’t enough sandbags in the world to stop Lake Erie,” he cautioned. Sandbags are being used to protect municipal infrastructure, Montone continued, and work is being done with utility companies and other municipal partners to guard their infrastructure as well. He pointed out that rain catchers have been installed in manholes and asks that residents leave them there. He noted that flooded streets aren’t necessarily a bad thing, as if they fill with water it means the system is working and the streets can be drained “in a controlled way.” Sandbags are biodegradable, Montone pointed out, and last 200 days when exposed to sunlight. “Once you use them, they can go right to the landfill,” he said. “We’re trying to

keep the environment in mind.” Diageo provided assistance as well, the fire chief noted, as they allowed their shipping and receiving area to be used when the sandbags came in. “Diageo was a good corporate partner,” said Montone. “They facilitated the pick up for all local municipalities.” Montone said that if people want to volunteer in case of a flood, they can sign up on the fire department’s website. Those names would be entered into the mass notification system and those who register would only be called in case of an emergency. “If it gets to a crisis situation, we’ll need a lot of people to help,” said Montone. “We’ll keep calling until we have enough.” Particular areas of concern are those who live along the Lake Erie shoreline and in the Big Creek area. Should areas flood, Montone said they want to ensure people are safe and that a reception centre would be established at the Libro Centre so that
evacuated residents have a place to go. Emergency officials would also perform “wellness checks” to ensure people are out and that people who need items from their homes such as medication can obtain them. Mapping is also being done to ensure no one is left behind and that emergency crews know where all homes are in the area, particularly if there are cottages on smaller roads. “We’re identifying places that could be easily missed so we don’t miss them,” said Montone. The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a flood watch for the region through July 15 and Montone said he is monitoring the situation regularly as well. He believes the town is as ready as it can be should there be flooding. “I’m confident we are in pretty good shape in terms of our preparedness,” he said.

Planning process for new subdivision moves forward
A new townhouse and semi-detached development is one step closer to reality. Town council has voted to advance a rezoning request from developer Joe Shaw to a regular meeting after comments were heard last week at a public planning meeting. Shaw wants to have zoning at 514 and 528 Simcoe St. changed from low density residential to medium density residential on the lands, located on the north side of Simcoe St. between Pacific Ave. and Martin Cr. The new street will be known as Mulberry Court, and have a total of 49 units. Shaw referred to it as “a luxury townhouse project” with units ranging from 1,300-1,500 square feet,
two-car garages, covered patios and low lot coverages meaning yards will be bigger than other townhouse developments. He said the price range will be in the area of $350,000-$450,000. “They are going to be really nice,” he said. “They are going to be high-end units.” Shaw said there is still work to do with the Town of Amherstburg and the County of Essex, but if all approvals be granted, he hopes a shovel could be in the ground in nine to ten months. “I’m hoping, if all goes well, no later than early spring (2020),” he said. At the public meeting, surrounding residents were concerned about whether the development could be increased, with some saying they moved to the area because it was less busy than where they were.

“We like our quiet street,” said Alan Piper. Residents also questioned about whether property values would decrease, concerned about whether it could be an affordable housing development. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche said he sits on the Windsor-Essex Community Housing Board and that there is a 5,000person waiting list for affordable housing. “Amherstburg has a shortage of geared-to-income housing,” said Meloche. CAO John Miceli added that 843 people in Amherstburg are on that list but didn’t view the proposed Mulberry Court project as an affordable housing project. He said he saw it as a development “recognizing what the market is looking for.” Shaw emphasized that the development is not affordable housing. “I don’t know where the geared-to-income (reports) came from,” he said. “It has nothing to do with us.” Shaw said his father has owned the property for 20 years and that the property could actually accommodate a larger development than what is being proposed but “we don’t want to do that.” Councillor Michael Prue had concerns over the location of the street, wondering if it could go somewhere else but down the middle of the development. He also questioned whether there would be enough on-street parking for guests.

McGregor Music Festival aiming to raise $50,000 at 30th annual event Festival being held this Sunday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. at Co-An Park, admission $5 In its first 29 years, the McGregor Music Festival has raised over $300,000 for the Windsor-Essex Cancer Centre Foundation.
By Ron Giofu The McGregor Music Festival is in a milestone year and is aiming for a milestone fundraising total. The 30th annual event is this Sunday at Co-An Park and organizers have their sights set high – they are hoping to raise $50,000 this year for the WindsorEssex Cancer Centre Foundation. Bands this year include C2C Entertainment, the All-Nighters Band, All-Star Country, Brand X Live, Exit 31, Jammin’ 4 Wellness, Lookin’ Back and Bad Moustache. Sue LeClair, chair of the organizing committee, noted there will be the popular pig auction at 4 p.m., the car show and a large raffle. LeClair said people can bring their classic cars and register for the car show for a $10 entry fee. One of the main raffle prize this year, she noted, is a chance for a $1,000 grocery card. “We’re having face painting and a clown for the kids,” said LeClair. In addition to wanting to raise $50,000 this year because it is an anniversary year, there is another reason the organizing committee is inspired to raise another record amount. The committee has been directly impacted by cancer in recent months. “We’ve lost three of our members in the last six months to cancer. It’s a special year for us,” stated LeClair. Specific projects the proceeds will go towards this year will include the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation’s Patient Assistance Fund and a RHINO Laryngoscope. “All of the money we raise stays in Windsor for

Lighthouse Church welcomes area “princesses” photos with princesses from Enchanted Adventure Parties, take part in activities and watch a dance performance. Not only did people from Amherstburg take part, but some came as far as Windsor. Mulder noted that people who were in the area from Toronto also decided to take part. “We thought we’d keep it small for a first year but it’s not exactly small,” Mulder joked. The feedback was also positive, she added. “Everyone loved it,” she said. “Everyone seems to love the food.” Lighthouse Church is also hosting a summer camp for seven weeks in July
LIGHTHOUSE Lighthouse Church recently held a “Princess Breakfast” in which about 70 young girls from around the area took part in. By Ron Giofu Lighthouse Church was the home to about 70 young princesses recently thanks to its first-ever Princess Breakfast. Dailah Mulder, who helped organize
the event, said they were pleased with their initial attempt, adding that they were at capacity. She said it was to show it was a time to get together and “let them know they are beautiful and that God loves them.” In addition to the breakfast, children got to have their
Town opts for no tagline, has to pay consultants additional $5,600 By Ron Giofu The town’s tag line debate is over as both “Every Day History” and “Born to Make History” are both history themselves. Town council has opted to move ahead without a tourism tag line for the time being and, unless someone comes up with something they like, nothing will be coming forward for the foreseeable future. Council members voted to re-think the “Every Day History” they passed in February and administration was tasked with consulting with Cinnamon Toast New Media and bring back the short list they originally came up with. The report to council suggested bringing back the “Born to Make History” tagline and it was a report that didn’t sit well with Councillor Donald McArthur. “I was disappointed when I read the report on the weekend,” he said Monday night. “I wanted to see the shortlist. I was really crestfallen when I didn’t. I thought we asked for a shortlist of options to come back and we didn’t get it. Am I the only one that thought we were going to get some options?” Manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota said her department stands behind “Born to Make History” 100 per cent and that a lot of trust was put into the work of Cinnamon Toast New Media. “We have a proven record,” she said. “Let us do our jobs.” Councillor Patricia Simone said
she asked for and received the other six names, but believed they were “lacking.” Simone asked if the town could move forward with its tourism branding and website and Rota said it was. Director of parks and recreation Phil Roberts said administration wasn’t trying to shirk responsibility by putting the original logo back before council but noted it was highly regarded by administration and they wanted to put it back in front of elected officials. He said he knew there was a risk by not adhering to council’s wishes. Both McArthur and Simone agreed that the “You’ll Love it Here” slogan that originated with local realtor Norm Mickle was a good tagline with McArthur stating he will hashtag it on his social media pages and his blog to see if it catches on further. McArthur added the town has a great staff but was disappointed in this case as “you didn’t honour the spirit or letter of what we asked for.” He noted “Born to Make History” is used by a Japanese pop star. Councillor Michael Prue made the motion to move forward without a tagline, stating he didn’t want to spend any more money as the town had to spend an additional $5,600 to reconsider the tagline. Councillor Peter Courtney also questioned the additional costs, with Rota stating additional work went into design and consultations. CAO John Miceli added that additional work was performed and “we have to pay for that.”

Bike Rodeo draws big numbers to teach bicycle safety By Ron Giofu The annual Bike Rodeo returned to Families First Funeral Home on Sunday with large numbers of children joining their parents and guardians for the event. The event was organized by the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment, with community services officer Const. Fred Adair noting that other Windsor Police Services’ community services officers were on hand as well as the Amherstburg Fire Department and County Towing. The Brain Injury Association of Windsor-Essex County were on hand helping to fit children with new bicycle helmets, many of the helmets being donated by that organization. Members of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg were also on hand barbecuing food with Bright Child Montessori, Little Buddies day care, No Frills, Sobeys and the Optimist Club also helping out. “We had a lot of community groups volunteer,” said Adair. “This is all funded by our community supporters. If we didn’t have them, we wouldn’t have this.” In addition to a helmet fitting station, there was a course where young

The public is welcome to help with a yard cleanup at Belle Vue this Saturday. The event runs from 8 a..m. to 12 noon. Everyone is welcome to come and help if they have a few hours to spare.
Adair added that it was the first one he organized since becoming community services officer and that it was a continuation of the tradition established by the former Amherstburg Police Service. He said he wanted to make it just as good, if not better, than previous years.

Lady Gens conclude regular season with win over Kingsville General Amherst advances to playoffs after finishing 7-1 in regular season By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens entered the WECSSAA girls slo-pitch playoffs with some momentum thanks to knocking off a previously-unbeaten Kingsville team. The Lady Gens beat the Kingsville Cavaliers 8-6 last Tuesday afternoon at Wigle Park left both teams with final regular season records of 7-1. The playoffs started earlier this week, but only the early results were available as this issue of the RTT went to press. The Lady Gens defeated L’Essor 15-8 and Villanova 13-2 in their first two games on Monday, according to the WECSSAA website. After Kingsville scored one run in the top of the first inning, the Lady

General Amherst’s Madison Pillon slides into third base as the ball eludes the Kingsville third baseman during last week’s regular season game at Wigle Park. Gens bounced back with four in the bottom of the second. Emma Pillon drove home four runs with a triple with Lexi Dodds’ RBI single bringing Pillon home. After Kingsville scored twice in
the third inning, Madi Pillon had a three-run triple of her own for General Amherst in the fourth inning. Kingsville countered with one in the fifth and Madi Pillon’s RBI single brought another Lady Gens’ run home
in the bottom of the sixth. Kingsville would score twice in the top of the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback. “We definitely played a lot better today than we did against them in (a recent) tournament,” said Ramie Tytgat, who pitched the entire game for General Amherst. Tytgat said it was a tough game, but they played hard right away instead of waiting until they got down on the scoreboard. She felt good about her own performance, pointing out it was the first time she pitched a WECSSAA league game this season. The Lady Gens’ pitches were higher than normal against Kingsville, meaning they wanted the young Kingsville team to swing at pitches arching higher than they are used to. “It definitely gives us a boost of confidence that we came in first place,” said Tytgat. Tytgat added their only loss in WECSSAA play was against Essex and they were able to redeem themselves at the Dorchester tournament. The playoff tournament was played at Co-An Park in McGregor.

Miracle League celebrates milestone
Claudette Oliver, Chuck Kelly, Angela Kelly and Megan Kelly present a $25,000 donation on behalf of Movati to Michele Vigneux as part of the Miracle League of Amherstburg’s tenth anniversary celebration last Saturday. Continued from Page 1 Prue, spoke on behalf of the town and
The money is to be used for improvements to the diamond and surrounding park with Kelly noting “it’s to make the park more welcoming and accessible.” Bondy indicated they are looking at creating new entranceways and other improvements at the park. Quesnel himself was honoured for his donations, as previous donations included funding for a new playing surface and videoboard in centre field. “We’re just happy to be a part of it,” Quesnel told the crowd. Miracle League board members also thanked all of those who played a part in donating and installing the wheelchair swing. Board member Brian McGee stated it came from Australia and Megan Kelly, daughter of Chuck and Angela Kelly, was the first person to officially ride in it. Councillor Donald McArthur, joined by colleagues Marc Renaud, Patricia Simone, Peter Courtney and Michael
congratulated the Miracle League, calling their tenth anniversary an “incredible accomplishment.”

Mission grateful to those who donated towards new van By Ron Giofu
Sponsors and donors of the new Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission van stand with Mission representatives last Wednesday afternoon
With its old van experiencing multiple mechanical issues, the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission teamed with a number of donors and groups to acquire a new one. The mission now owns a 2017 GMC Savanah van, acquired through Amherstburg Chevrolet Buick GMC. The full-size van is valued at over $31,000 and the mission raised money for it through donations and grants, including one from the Windsor-Essex Community Foundation. “Today is a great day for the
Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission and a great day for the people we serve,” said mission president Tim McAllister, during a brief ceremony last Wednesday afternoon. “Our old van was getting very costly to maintain, but thanks to the contributions and participation of so many generous and wonderful souls – including a grant from the Windsor-Essex Community Foundation in the amount of $8,000 – as well as funds from a number of generous, anonymous donors, we could now move forward with the purchase of our new van.”

MEMORIAM BECKY MICKLE-RISHA
JULY 19, 1976 TO JUNE 6, 2012 My daughter Becky has inspired me to write this poem To share my feelings about her moving into God’s Home I truly hope my message is clear right from the start Hold your children close and love them with all your heart If I tell you the truth and look back at a glance I would have done things differently if I had the chance. You can’t change things when all is said and done I never thought it would happen to me, that I’d be the one. Sometimes in life you have to face your worst fears My memories always reduce me to tears Every morning it becomes a new reality That my baby girl is not coming back to me. Thank God for the support of Family and Friends When the sorrow is overwhelming, I have come to depend. Thank God for Adriana and Colin who are reflections of her They are my strength to go on, that’s for sure How do I do it, You know, get on with my life Believe me when I tell you, I couldn’t without Janet, My wife. Becky had a Best Friend, her protector, her Brother Chris Who continues to celebrate her life, a sister he will forever miss. People want to know how I’m doing; it’s hard for them to comprehend I put a smile on my face “I’m doing ok”; my heart is broken, never to mend How do you do it when life comes to a standstill? I reached out to Family and Friends; They help you find the will. I pray that God has made some Heavenly space And taken Becky into his arms to her final resting place. BECKY, I LOVE YOU AND I MISS YOU SO MUCH, DAD

Thank you to everyone who supported us.” Lisa Kolody, executive director of the Windsor-Essex Community Foundation, said they award Community Impact Grants annually and that the committee that decides upon them took noted of the mission’s application. “I think the committee was really impressed by how many people (the mission) touches with their work,” she said. “Any little bit we can help you with for your work, we love it.”
McAllister thanked his board of directors for their commitment to the mission and pointed out the van will allow them to serve people better as the van gives the mission reliable and efficient transportation for picking up supplies and groceries. “We have been working for a long time to raise some money and it is such a blessing to have received help from so many,” said McAllister. “We are truly a community of ‘people helping people.’” Vice president Shirley Hitchcock was given special thanks “for her energy and commitment in working out all the details for the van.” McAllister also expressed the mission’s gratitude towards Scott Elliott and Mike Bezzoubkin from Amherstburg Chevrolet Buick GMC and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation as well as the “many anonymous donors that have made this memorable day possible.” Hitchcock said the local GM dealer was “fabulous” to deal with and also made a “generous donation towards the van.” Elliott stated they did so to help the mission and thus, give back to the community. “Basically, it was a major fundraising venture,” Hitchcock added of the van purchase. By Ron Giofu The accomplishments keep accumulating for a local high school student. Cade Wright, a Grade 12 student at General Amherst High School, captured the gold medal in the precision machining category at the recent Skills Canada competition in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is the second General Amherst student to represent the school at that competition in as many years, as Devin Paquette competed last year. “It feels good,” Wright said, though noted he was surprised. “I was hoping to win the whole time. Once the competition was over and before the award ceremony, I felt good but I wasn’t sure about the gold.” Wright had to undertake projects on both a mill and a lathe, each one lasting 3.5 hours, and also had to do his own calculations on how to actually do the projects. He said winning the gold medal at the national level hasn’t completely set in yet. Opening ceremonies were last Monday with the competition Tuesday and Wednesday before he and teacher Rodney Levesque returned home Thursday. Wright believes it not only looks good on a resumé for himself, but reflects positively on the school as well. “A lot of people have been happy for me,” he said. “Overall, they are pretty happy for me.” Wright added it was exciting for him to travel to Halifax, as he had not been to the east coast before. “There was a lot going on and a lot to see,” he said.

“Canada D’Eh Run is not only one of the largest events in our community every year it is a patriotic must do if you are Canadian” says Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “And yeah, to have a Canadian icon like Don Cherry on the medal this year, makes for an even greater celebration.” “This is the only open source medal in the running world giving the runners a direct say in who to honour,” says Chris Uszynski –Race Director from RunningFlat. Now Canadians anywhere in the worldnot just in Amherstburg, Ontario - can join in and get the ‘Great Canadian” finisher’s medal by registering for the virtual run option. “We added a virtual run so you can be anywhere in the world and you register by June 1st we can send you your medal, Canada D’Eh Run shirt, and bib so you can run on July 1,” says Uszynski This patriotic 5k run and Canadatastic Kid’s Dash starts at 9 a.m. just outside of Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada – the headquarters for the British
forces in southwestern Upper Canada during the War of 1812 – and continues up Laird, around Toddy Jones Park, down Dalhousie and back. The course showcases the spectacular waterfront and is flat, fast and historical. Money raised by participants is going to fund the great work of The Canadian Cancer Society. A national community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer. Money raised through the Canada D’Eh Run funds Canada’s most promising cancer research and vital support services for cancer patients and their families in Amherstburg and Essex County. After the run, runners can enjoy a festival in Toddy Jones Park: a family-friendly event that includes free activities, food court, entertainment and a tour of Historic Fort Malden. A fireworks display will be the finale to a spectacular day. Get your Canadian on, Eh!
Wright also works for AIS, a company based in Oldcastle. He will continue to work there as he furthers his education as he is headed for St.
Clair College next year. Wright stated that he also hasn’t ruled out competing in the Skills Canada competition next year in the post-secondary category.

How to throw a safe outdoor party for all your guests The arrival of summer means outdoor activities are in full force, and this includes hosting a backyard party. While you might be ready to execute all the fun elements, don’t forget to keep health and safety top of mind for adults, kids and pets. Protect guests from bugs. You may have a guest list for your event, but party-crashing mosquitoes and wasps can also make an appearance. These bugs can bring unwanted illnesses or cause allergic reactions. Ahead of time you can protect your guests with the following techniques: Mosquitoes: Empty any standing pools of water (birdbaths, wading pools) that could pose as mosquito breeding grounds, have insect repellent available and place citronella candles in key gathering areas. Wasps: Remind guests to bring any allergy medications and be sure to set up traps around
central areas where guests and food will be. Check your property for nests and call a professional to have them removed. Have a first aid kit. Having a fully stocked first aid kit available nearby is essential in case of an emergency. While everyone has the intention of being safe, accidents are unexpected, especially with children. Whether it’s a fall, burn or cut, be prepared to remedy an injury. If you know pets will be coming, invest in a pet first aid kit, too. Serve a variety of drink options. While summer means cocktails and beers, make sure to have non-alcoholic beverages available. Alcohol promotes dehydration and interferes with the body’s ability to regulate its own temperature. Consider serving non-alcoholic drinks between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., when the sun is at its peak, or start your party in the evening. Most impor-
tantly, set up accommodations or have money for taxis just in case guests drink too much. Remember you are responsible for the safety of your guests. Sun safety. Everyone wants to soak up the sun, but party-goers need to protect themselves. Have extra sunscreen available for all guests, including pets,
to reduce the risk of sunburn. The sun also brings high temperatures, which can lead to heat stroke. Set up umbrellas and clear shaded areas where guests can escape from the heat. Heat stroke is also a risk for pets, and like humans there are warning signs you can
watch out for. PetSmart notes that signs of an overheated pet include excessive panting, drooling, dry tongue, vomiting, diarrhea, uncoordinated movement and collapse. If any of these symptoms are noticed, wet down the belly and inside rear legs of your pet. This is where large blood vessels that cool them down are located.
