Amherstburg Fire Department honors long time members Awards banquet held last Saturday night By Ron Giofu
The Amherstburg Fire Department maintained an annual tradition over the weekend by honouring some of its long-time members. The local fire service held its annual awards banquet Saturday night at the Libro Centre where firefighters were recognized for their years of service. Among the firefighters being recognized this year for achieving milestones were Jason Durocher and Bill Scott for 25 years of service, David Varney and Richard Reid for 20 years of service, Jon Daley and Scott Riddell for ten years of service while Nicholas D’Amore, Patrick Kochaniec, Adam Mann, B.J. Wiley and David Bart were honoured for five years of service to the Amherstburg Fire Department. Eric Wismer was recognized for having the best attendance while Mike Hagerty was also honoured with an award for his commitment. Chief Bruce Montone said it was a year of many challenges, but praised his department and its members for their service and dedication to the community. “There isn’t a day that goes by that
you don’t make me proud,” he told the firefighters and their families. “To you as your chief, thank you.” Montone also read greetings from Deputy Chief Paul Acton, who was unable to attend. Acton wrote that the Amherstburg Fire Department now has ten certified incident commanders and that firefighters put in many hours training on equipment, vehicle and processes throughout the year. Acton also praised staff, town council, senior management with the town and the families of the firefighters for their efforts throughout the year. “All of that support has made this possible,” wrote Acton. Fire clerk Dan Monk pointed out the work of the firefighters comes as most have full-time jobs and families. “For the amount of time, commitment and dedication to the people of Amherstburg, you can’t be thanked enough,” said Monk. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche paid tribute to the firefighters, stating he was proud to have played a role “in the positive changes within our firefighting service over the past four years.” Continued on Page 26

Another long-term care facility may be on its way to Amherstburg. Town council has authorized chief administrative officer (CAO) John Miceli to proceed with the sale of the eastern three acres of the former St. Bernard School property to an unnamed buyer, who would then construct a long-term care facility on the site pending licensing approvals from the province. Miceli said the town has accepted the offer though noted the offer is conditional on the proponents getting their necessary licensing and approvals. The proposed long-term care facility would have anywhere from 128-160 beds, Miceli stated. “That will be dictated by the license they are given,” the CAO said. A new long-term care facility in Amherstburg would ease waiting lists at existing facilities, with Miceli estimating that list being at 85 people and 18month wait times. “We definitely have a large waiting list in the Town of Amherstburg right now,” said Miceli. “With Amherstburg having the fastest growing seniors population in the region, what we’ve done tonight is continue to solidify council’s direction on providing senior’s amenities in this community.” The former St. Bernard School building is now town property and a nurse practitioner-led clinic is already known to be one of the tenants of that building. The long-term care facility next to the new “community hub” definitely ties in together, Miceli added. While not revealing the name of the proponent, Miceli indicated the company currently operates approximately 600 beds within the province. He said things could move quickly if licensing is granted to the applicant. “From their perspective, they are going to expedite construction if they get the beds,” Miceli stated. If everything goes according to plan, it is estimated the company would invest $30-$40 million in Amherstburg, create 80 full-time jobs, 205 spinoff jobs and approximately $300,000 in annual tax revenue for the municipality.

Priorities need to be reassessed after artificial flowers removed
Resident wants update on glass plant It has been over three months since we first heard that the Town of Amherstburg was considering a proposal to allow a Chinese firm to build a glass factory on the old Allied Chemical site. Since then, we the people have heard nothing. The general consensus is that we need industry in this town, but, we need to attract a cleaner, non polluting industry, one with less health risk, and one that is more suited to our community, our history, our geographic place, and to our environment. The youth of this town - both high schools, the members of the AMA and similar outdoors sporting clubs, those who appreciate and support the bird and insect migrations, those who want to preserve our environment, and those who want to have a healthy fisheries, all want to know whether the town is still considering this proposal, and if so, why? Well Mr. Mayor? Mr. CAO? How about an update? What's the scoop? —Roger Renaud Amherstburg

Last Easter, I experienced a situation similar to that of the Price family regarding artificial flowers at the cemetery. Finding it impossible to maintain real flowers, I placed artificial flowers at the graves of my daughter and parents. I was quite upset to discover they have been removed within a week. The cemetery staff informed me that this was for the convenience of the grounds crew. If artificial flowers are found lying on the ground during
To follow up with Irene Price’s letter, we share similar frustration with Heavenly Rest cemetery in Amherstburg. When we chose the final resting place for Corey nine years ago, we chose to bury her in a place where we could visit and grieve while still sharing the life and spirit of a wonderful girl. We purchased a bench and a tree at the cemetery so that we could decorate with flowers and lights and remind ourselves of the person she was when she was still with us. A hockey skate. Angel figurines. Hockey pucks from her team. Seeing these memories left at her grave site was a constant reminder to the family that she was loved beyond imagination. My mother put her heart into decorating the tree bed with flowers, keeping everything contained so not to get in the way of the landscapers. And for nine years, these things remained undisturbed. The cemetery was a place we could visit and not just see death but be reminded of life. Until now, apparently. After years of Corey’s things being undisturbed, Heavenly Rest ceme-

tery removed all of these items from the grave. Our family was left completely heartbroken. The painstaking work my mother put into making her daughter’s grave into a joyous place of resting was completely destroyed. We had to make numerous phone calls to find out what became of the priceless memorabilia that was taken from us to find out they were “discarded.” Now, we look around the cemetery and notice how much life has been sucked out of the grounds. There are no flowers after the cemetery decided to remove all satin flower arrangements. A cemetery is a place we bury the dead, but we do not forget the life they lived before they were buried there. We want to visit our sister, my nephew wants to visit his mother, my parents want to visit their daughter and be reminded of her life. We are extremely frustrated with the higherups at Heavenly Rest who have no regard for our grief. —Haylee Meloche, on behalf of the Meloche Family Amherstburg

For the third straight year, the Belle Vue Conservancy teamed with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) but this year had a special twist. Following the roughly hour-long concert at Christ Church Anglican, Belle Vue Conservancy members surprised Father Bill Strang with a birthday cake in recognition of the Ramsay St. church’s 200th anniversary. Belle Vue, like Christ Church, was built using bricks ordered by Robert Reynolds and both built in the same time period. Belle Vue Conservancy members Debra and Robert Honor outlined some of the history of the Dalhousie St. home, with Debra pointing out that Reynolds ordered the bricks for not only Belle Vue and Christ Church, but the barracks at Fort Malden as well. While there was a rumour that the church was built with “leftover” bricks, Debra indicated that would not have been the case. “He would not have miscalculated that order,” she said. Robert noted that Belle Vue is only one of two struc-
tures in Canada with Palladian architecture with historical designations. The other is Province House in Halifax. Stephanie Thomson, the conservancy member who helped lead organizing efforts, was happy with how things turned out. “I thought it was terrific,” she said. “I thought (the WSO’s) repertoire was beautifully presented. We really wanted to recognize the 200th anniversary of Belle Vue and Christ Church because there is a physical connection. I think the crowd enjoyed themselves.” Thomson pointed out she was inspired by a recent article in the River Town Times written by Debra Honor about the bricks. “That was the catalyst for this event,” said Thomson. Also noting she was inspired by Robert Honor’s information on the architectural history, Thomson said the event was “meant to be.” She also said she was “delighted” that so many people attended and added that the WSO is great to work with. The Belle Vue Conservancy had many sponsors and partners in presenting the event and Thomson said they were grateful to all. “Everyone I asked to help just did it,” she said. “It

Plastic straws and stir sticks banned from Libro Centre By Ron Giofu Town council has banned most plastic straws and stir sticks from the Libro Centre and is looking towards whether they can implement a town-wide ban on all single-use plastics. The move came after a presentation from Addisyn Walker and Darragh Aston, both Grade 7 students at Anderdon Public School, calling for a ban on
single-use plastics like bags and straws. The students pointed out large companies like Starbucks and American Airlines “have already decided to go straw free and continue to make profits.” Aston pointed out the environmental benefits as she said not using plastic straws and bags would help stop “unnecessary harm to sea animals and help save the environment.” Continued on Page 11

Community comes together for Unity in Christ (UIC) fundraiser By Ron Giofu
A local group helping to raise money to aid people in South Sudan did so again Saturday night with a fundraiser at the Columbus Community Hall. Unity in Christ (UIC) presented its ninth annual fundraiser with the Amherstburg-based charitable group started to help Father Nichola Mauro-Iko in his attempts to assist his homeland. Fr. Mauro-Iko was the associate pastor of St. John the Baptist Church at the time and is now the pastor at St. Alphonsus Church in Windsor. “It is getting exciting. We are able to get our message across to so many people,” said Fr. Mauro-Iko. “Since we started, we have had success stories of helping people in South Sudan. We are glad to see people are beginning to understand what we do.” While things have improved thanks to Unity in Christ, Fr. Mauro-Iko said there are still issues such as hunger, clean water and neo-natal care for mothers and newborn infants. Proceeds from Saturday night’s fundraiser will be devoted to the Budi Health Centre to improve care for mothers and babies in South Sudan. Unity in Christ supports the needs of women in South Sudan, he noted, as women are often treated as second-class citizens and often have to face rape and violence. He said the centre that UIC helped build not only helps citizens from a health perspective, it also allows them to have meetings and help themselves. Fr. Mauro-Iko pointed out that he was able to travel in South Sudan with local journalist Jonathan Martin, noting that he left the decision to Martin and that he always depend “on the providence of God” to keep him safe. “He showed his courage and came with me,” said Fr. Mauro-Iko. “He had direct contact with the people on the ground.” Fr. Mauro-Iko added that Martin was able to have fun on top of doing his work as he observed customs of the African country. “He was very much welcomed by the people. He fit right in,” stated Fr. Mauro-Iko. “He ate what the people ate. He drank what the people drank.” Martin said his 2018 journey to South Sudan was primarily focused on reporting in the nation but that

The humanitarian aspect came later.” Martin said he saw first-hand the difference Unity in Christ is having as he actually helped bring donated goods to the people of South Sudan. “I helped carry supplies from UIC,” said Martin. “It does make a genuine impact.” Fr. Mauro-Iko thanked the UIC supporters in Amherstburg for continuously backing the group. UIC president Dave Fox also stated his gratitude to those who support Unity in Christ. Fox pointed out they are also helping to fund the drilling of two wells in the African country this year. “Every year we do our best to raise as much money as we can to send to South Sudan,” said Fox. “I can’t tell you the impact you are making in people’s lives.” For more information on Unity in Christ or to donate, visit www.uic-charity.org, call 519-256-1849 or e-mail info@uic-charity.org.

Kate Hargreaves has once again combined her passions of writing and roller derby and her third book is the result. Hargreaves, an Amherstburg native, has penned “Jammer Star” and it is her third book – second involving roller derby. The twist on this one, however, is the fact that it is geared towards youth and is written at a Grade 4 reading level. “I hadn’t written a kids’ book before,” Hargreaves explained. “I had never written for the genre or for kids at all. I had to learn how.” “Jammer Star” isn’t just about roller derby, she added, as it ties in body image issues. The plot sees the main character want to be the best player on her roller derby team but consistently fall short to another player. However, the star player has been noticeably losing weight, causing the main character to make some tough choices. “It was fulfilling to get positive messages out into the world for young people,” said Hargreaves. Hargreaves worked on “Jammer Star” for roughly a year-and-a-half, writing chapter summaries along the way as she was guided through the process by her publishers at Orca Books. It came out in late January and was launched at Biblioasis in Windsor. “It came to be after I had written an article for the Literary Press Group,” she explained. It developed from there and she ended up writing her third book. Her previous two titles are “Talking Derby” and “Leak,” the latter a collection of poems. Hargreaves noted that her two jobs as a book designer and an academic writing advisor at the University of Windsor keep her very busy so she doesn’t get as many opportunities to write as she would like. However, she is working on her fourth book, which will be a collection of short stories.

Amherstburg Community Services recognizes its 120 volunteers Continued from Page 2 “It’s wonderful to see all of the volunteers come out and enjoy this evening,” said Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche. “You guys worked so hard this year and it’s an organization that is so appreciated in the community.” Meloche said it isn’t just a responsibility of citizens to help others, but governments have to provide support as well. He said the previous and current town councils are providing assistance, noting the previous council’s purchase of the former St. Bernard School as a seniors hub. He said the next step is developing the site with health and wellness providers. The meal at “Rockin’ in the Fifties” was prepared by ACS’ Meals on Wheels kitchen.

An Amherstburg native’s skill in the sport of acro has landed him a spot with the famed Cirque du Soleil. James Heugh recently signed with Cirque du Soleil and will take his acro skills there for the next 15 months. Acro, as described by Wikipedia, is “a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics, and its use of acrobatics in a dance context.” Heugh had just returned to his home

in Los Angeles after a five-month tour of Asia, North America and South America where he performed sold out shows. He set up the tour himself and appeared in 54 cities. “I sold out in every city,” he said. Heugh believes the tour helped lead to new opportunities and one of those arose when he got home. He received a message from someone in Cirque du Soleil through his Instagram account asking about his interest in their current show. With the show combining skating – James being a former hockey player – and acro, he sent in a video and was soon signed to a contract. Continued on Page 26

Town also studying feasibility of banning bags and straws throughout community The Town of Amherstburg will be performing a Mass Notification Test through Amherstburg Alerts on: May 10th, 2019 4:00 PM For more information about Amherstburg Alert visit our website www.amherstburgfire.com Addisyn Walker and Darragh Aston make their presentation to Amherstburg town council at the April 23 meeting.
Continued from Page 6 Walker explained that using reusable straws and bags is more cost-effective and believed that if a reusable grocery bag was used instead of buying bags, it would lead to savings for shoppers. Following their presentation, both students were pleased with how they were received and the results that were obtained. “I think it went better than we expected. It’s good to see other people care, more than just students like us, and that people are learning about it,” said Walker. “I’m happy with the results,” added Aston. “They responded better than we expected.” Both said they will continue to press for the elimination of single-use plastics and town council has asked for a report on the feasibility of doing that town-wide. The town will also pen a letter to the Ontario government supporting a ban on single-use plastics. Councillor Donald McArthur said that he was impressed with the delegation and believed council had to set an example. “As a leader, you have to set an example and lead that way,” he said. McArthur noted that he voted against a motion banning plastic water bottles because he was using them at the time when he was out running and thought it was hypocritical for him to vote for a ban. He has since reconsidered his position. “I think that was wrong of me,” he said. Places like Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland are banning plas-
tic bags and McArthur called it “the wave of the future.” “The small decisions we make today can really have a big impact,” he said. McArthur noted he was open to plastic straws that are needed for those with accessibility needs. Councillor Michael Prue told the students that too many from his generation haven’t paid enough attention to the environment and threw his support behind the students. “You have an absolute handle on this. Dream big,” he said. “I commend you with all of my heart.” Councillor Peter Courtney also commended the students and said the issue is “something we have to investigate.” “We need to take care of our planet and plastics are horrible,” he said. Courtney wondered about a bylaw banning single-use plastics and director of planning, development and legislative services Mark Galvin cautioned that “it all comes down to the ability to enforce that bylaw.” With senior levels of government already looking at a ban, Galvin believed it may be prudent to look in that direction. Eliminating “lightweight bags” from stores can be a “no brainer,” added Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche, noting he brings his own reusable containers with him when he shops. “It’s easy to eliminate bags if we have a mindset to bring our own reusable containers,” said Meloche. Councillor Marc Renaud believed the change can start with youth and supported putting in paper straws at the Libro Centre.

Artist Rico Dancel unveiled his latest watercolour painting “Ghosts of Boblo Reflections of Memories” during an exhibit Sunday at the Gibson Gallery. Dancel’s “Untamed Composition 2” runs through May 12.
Work of artist Rico Dancel now on exhibit at Gibson Gallery By Ron Giofu The Gibson Gallery’s latest exhibit is featuring the work of an Essex County artist who also teaches painting at the gallery. “Untamed Composition 2” is being featured through May 12 and it is a collection of works from Rico Dancel, who paints in watercolours. His latest painting “Ghosts of Boblo – Reflections of Memories” was
unveiled at a public reception last Sunday afternoon. Dancel says he paints a lot of birds and florals, with the work not only trying to establish what he sees but he also wants to take a viewer’s eye and imagination deeper into what is depicted. “It’s all about the colours,” he said, “and the connection between me and the audience.” Continued on Page 17

Continued from Page 9 “As the Cypher Systems Group Greenway trail is narrower than the original greenway, we wanted to thoroughly investigate the potential impacts of opening this trail to horses, while ensuring rider safety,” Money notes. At the time, it was determined that after formalizing the Greenway Etiquette Guidelines and implementing them along the Chrysler Canada Greenway, the board of directors could revisit this request. ERCA is also working on improved signage to communicate with trail users, which is expected to be installed within the coming months. As well, it was indicated by administration that safe access points and a parking area that could accommodate horse trailers would be required along the Cypher Systems Group Greenway prior to opening it for use by equestrians. The Cypher Systems Group Greenway runs between Amherstburg and Essex. As part of its ‘Place for Life’ fundraising campaign, the Essex Region Conservation Foundation has been working to raise funds to build community entrances. A fundraising campaign specifically for an entrance that would accommodate horse trailers, which would be located at County Rd. 15 in Essex, has also been launched. “A community entrance that would accommodate horse trailers will cost approximately $50,000 to build,” adds Richard Wyma, Executive Director of the Essex Region Conservation Foundation. “In the past, we’ve been able to partner with organizations who recognize the value that our incredible system of trails bring to our community. The Foundation is continuing to seek these partnerships.” Anyone wishing to donate directly can visit essexregionconservation.ca/foundation for more information.
Continued from Page 12 Dancel states that he wants to share what he sees and share that between himself and the audience viewing the painting. He pointed out the reflections and details of his work, noting that he often has to paint something upon getting an inspiration. In his biography, Dancel points out he is a self-taught artist who came to Canada from the Philippines in 1978. He is a general machinist by trade and art is something he enjoys away from work. “Having exquisite shades, colours and off composition, yet balance as a whole, Rico captures the true spirit of blooming flowers with richness and elegance,” his biography states. “With a great western influence as his subject matter, he gives a delicate Oriental touch which allows him to express its poetic values. By sputtering bursts, Rico breathes life and energy into his paintings.” Dancel said painting is his form of enjoyment and something he has been doing for approximately 20 years. “I think it’s a passion. People enjoy playing hockey, I
enjoy doing this,” he said. “It’s fun. It’s relaxing.” The Kingsville resident comes to Amherstburg frequently, where he teaches watercolour workshops at the Gibson Gallery. The next workshop is this Sunday and people can call 519-736-2826 for availability. For more information on the Gibson Gallery, visit www.gibsonartgallery.com or visit them ThursdaySunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. They are also on Facebook and Twitter. The General Amherst Lady Gens girls soccer team were in action last week in WECSSAA play. The Lady Gens began the week with a 3-0 loss to Cardinal Carter at the Libro Centre. It was the fifth straight loss for the Lady Gens. Despite the loss, head coach Eric Campbell was happy with what he saw and believed there was progress. “They had lots of great chances,” said Campbell. Campbell believed it was a better game than their previous one against Belle River. “We controlled the ball. We controlled the field much better late in the first half and the beginning of the second half,” he said. The Lady Gens have a lot of room for growth and Campbell said he enjoys working with them. “They are a good group of kids who like playing together,” he said. General Amherst has to work on communication and team building, he added after last week’s game with Cardinal Carter. “It’s all about hitting our stride as we get closer to the playoffs,” said Campbell. “We are a forward moving team. We are seeing improvement. It does feel good to see that happening.” The Lady Gens are in action this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Essex. They enter the game with a WECSSAA record of 1-5 on the 2019 season. The next game for the Lady Gens is the final game of the regular season, May 7 at Kingsville with a scheduled start time of 3:45 p.m.

Admirals host hopefuls at spring mini-camp said forward Caleb Paquette is likely moving on with Ty Moss, Jacob Fields and Josh DiCarlo possibly moving up to Jr. B. “It’ll be a turnover, but I think some of the kids we’re adding, especially from the ’02 group, will look like second or third year players right from the beginning,” said Bortignon. Bortignon stated they are looking to get faster in order to continue playing the up-tempo style they like. He added they are also looking to add grit as they want a more consistent forecheck.

Crain. “The compete level is what we’re looking for.” “There’s a little bit on the line this year,” added Bortignon. “We’ve seen other teams do it and thought it was a cool spin we could put on it this year as well.” Bortignon pointed out that while the winning team will get invited to training camp, that doesn’t mean other players that catch their eyes won’t be invited. “The talent is really good,” said Bortignon, noting there are a number of quality players with 2002 birth years. Bortignon said there are holes to fill adding the Admirals could have the highest number of rookies in their lineup next year in the six years he and the current ownership group have been involved with the team. The Amherstburg Admirals won’t have a meaningful game again until September but don’t tell that to the group of players on the ice last week. The Admirals hosted a mini-camp last Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the Libro Centre with about 60 young players on hand hoping to land a spot on the Jr. C hockey team’s roster this fall. “We feel we have some top guys from around the county,” said Admirals general manager Greg Crain. “We think we have a good group of guys.” Crain said they have been talking to players about potentially joining the club and is optimistic for the 2019-20 PJHL Stobbs Division season. He acknowledged the four overage players from last season – Cory Burns, Ben Larder, Austin Jennings and Travis Campbell – have moved on and the team has to fill those spots. Players came mainly from the Windsor-Essex County area with Crain noting one also came from the United States. “Our scouts have been out pounding the pavement as far back as November,” he said. “We’ve seen a lot of hockey.” Crain and head coach Paul Bortignon both pointed out the new format where players were divided into four teams in a mini-tournament format with the winning team getting automatic invitations to the main training camp in August. “The reason we did that is so it’s competitive,” said

The General Amherst Bulldogs battled Cardinal Carter last Wednesday afternoon at the Libro Centre. Cardinal Carter remained undefeated with a 1-0 win. The loss evened the Bulldogs’ record at 3-3 on the 2019 WECSSAA senior boys soccer season.
General Amherst starts slo-pitch season well
Continued from Page 19 The Lady Gens have a lot of Grade 9 players this season, Pillon added, but said they started the season well. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we did very well, she stated. “I’m excited to see how the next couple of games go. “It was a really good start to the season, added Lexi Dodds, one of the team’s returning players.
Dodds believed the Lady Gens still have things to work on, but hopes they do better than last year when she believes they were upset in the playoffs. General Amherst has to keep the ball out of the air, something that cost them last season, she said. Mike Prescott, who coaches the team with Nicole Maxey and Stephanie Melcher, said they have some good speed and power on the
young General Amherst team this season. “It’s a good mix of kids, said Prescott. “I think we’re going to be outstanding. We definitely can contend for a title. It’s been a couple of years since we brought one home so it would be nice to get that again. The next game for General Amherst is Friday at 1:10 p.m. against UMEI.

GOD LOVES YOU
AND HAS PROVIDED FOR YOUR SALVATION THRU HIS SON JESUS CHRIST If you are not sure of your salvation I pray that you would stop right now and ask Jesus to come into your heart. Don't wait another minute. Here is an important prayer for you. Dear God: I thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to die for my sins and that I might be saved. I accept him now as my Lord and Saviour and I turn from my past life to a renewed life in you through him. You said in your Word that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God raised him from the dead I would be saved (Romans 10:9). I believe your Word; I believe I am now saved, Thank You Lord.

Local swimmers to split time between two pools in 2019 By Ron Giofu
Baseball Parade The annual Amherstburg Minor Baseball Parade was held last Saturday morning. Players from various age divisions and their parents took part in the parade, which wound its way from Centennial Park, down Victoria St. S., Simcoe St., Sandwich St. S. and Richmond St. The parade serves as the kickoff to the local baseball season.
A solution has been found to the issue of where children can swim in 2019. While Centennial Park can still be used for baseball this year, it’s a different story for the Lions Pool as administration projected during budget deliberations that re-opening the pool would cost $80,000 in maintenance, repairs and staffing. Town council opted to keep the Lions Pool closed and tasked administration with finding another solution, with that solution being to have programming at the outdoor pool at Gil Maure Park in LaSalle and at the indoor pool at the Movati fitness facility in Amherstburg. “Working with LaSalle has been extremely valuable as they have provided the town with concrete opportunities to offer residents an almost seamless program. They offer similar programming at their outdoor pool to that Amherstburg had offered at the Lions Pool,” CAO John Miceli stated in a report to town council. Of Movati, Miceli wrote: “In order to provide a more local program, administration met with management from the Movati Athletic Club to discuss use of their indoor pool for similar programming. Officials from Movati were very willing and receptive to partner with the town to provide aquatics programming. Movati has an extensive adult aquatics fitness program, including Adult Lengths, for their membership. However, they do allow non-members to use their facilities (equipment and pool) for a drop-in fee of $10.” Miceli stated that Movati would offer summer lessons due to the Lions Pool being closed. Firefighters, families honoured for sacrifices made for community Continued from Page 1 “Improved training, new equipment and new leadership helped create a safer work environment and a more predictable level of service,” said Meloche. “But equally important to the service are the qualities you as firefighters bring to your job.” Meloche also recognized the spouses and significant others of the firefighters.
“The sacrifices they make and the support they give are vital to the success of our firefighters and for that, we applaud you,” said the deputy mayor. D’Amore also pointed out current efforts of the Station 3 firefighters that have banded together as the Malden Firefighters Association. They are rehabilitating a 1946 Ford fire truck and are also aiming to rebuild a former Malden fire hall that sits
adjacent to the former “Little White Church” at the foot of Howard Ave. D’Amore said the hall is “in a desperate need of a rebuild” and that a June 1 steak fundraiser at the AMA Sportsmen Club is planned to help raise funds. Tickets are $25 for that and people can contact Station 3 if interested.
Heugh signed to a contract by Cirque du Soleil
Continued from Page 10 Between the time he was first contacted to when he signed and was measured for his Cirque du Soleil attire in Montreal, Heugh estimated it was a two-week timeframe. “I’m pretty used to picking up my life and moving it,” he said. “It was
crazy, but I’m used to it.” Cirque du Soleil tours a different North American city every week, Heugh explained, and also has plans to tour Mexico and Europe. “This is probably my biggest accomplishment in acro so far,” he said. Heugh, who once appeared on the
show “America’s Got Talent,” said he has been in acro for about five years. He had embarked on a mixed martial arts (MMA) career but an injury cut that short. While working at a gym, an acro team began practicing there and he got involved, thus leading to a new ca-
reer he has worked hard at. Heugh added his family has supported his dreams, including his latest accomplishment. “They’re pretty happy with it,” he said. “It’s good to have that support.”
Town finds new options for local swimmers Public Swims from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Town would supplement the schedule with rental of a bus from Sharp Bus Line on Thursdays for the same times,” Miceli’s report stated. Town council had approved $20,000 for administration to find a solution and while expenses were $22,160, revenues are being anticipated at $10,950 bringing the overall estimate to provide the program at $11,210. “I think it’s a great compromise,” said
AMHERSTBURG
Councillor Peter Courtney. “I’ll give props where props are due.” Courtney wondered about the Amherstburg Sharks swim meet and what will happen with that with the CAO stating they still have money in the budget to find a way to have the swim meet in LaSalle and get people to go there. Yvette Erickson, who along with Tiffany Cote, pressed the town for a swimming pool for their children, was satisfied with what she saw.
“I think it’s a fair compromise,” she said. “Obviously, it’s not ideal because it means travelling for us but it’s a fair compromise.” Erickson said they still want to see a pool budgeted for in Amherstburg but said the current solution is fair “for now.” Swimmers were already exploring other options, with Erickson noting that registration in other towns gets underway soon.
