Town moves planning process forward for new Dalhousie St. hotel By Ron Giofu

Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce presents Business Excellence Awards By Ron Giofu

The town’s business community was recognized last week by the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce (ACOC). The 14th annual Business Excellence Awards were presented last Thursday night at Pointe West Golf Club with 11 honourees recognized. The Non-Profit/Charitable Award was presented to the AMA Sportsmen Club. President Rod Ferriss offered thanks and noted the club is volunteer-run.

“I have a great crew that helps out on a daily basis,” said Ferriss. Ferriss added they have put on a variety of different events and have made numerous donations back into the community. The Welcoming Accessibility Award was presented to Little Caesars’ Amherstburg location. “It’s very rewarding to be working with people with disabilities, see them smile and helping them know they belong somewhere,” said franchisee Layane Koutli. “They are making a difference.” Continued on Page 13

The planning process has been moved forward for the downtown hotel proposed by Amico. The hotel, to be located at the intersection of Dalhousie and Gore streets, had proposed Official Plan and zoning bylaw amendments advanced Monday evening. The current proposal calls for a four-storey, 91room hotel but Amico’s vice president of development Cindy Prince said that is the maximum of what could be constructed at the site. Prince indicated that some operators they are speaking with envision a smaller boutique hotel at the site. The current plan calls for 78 spaces and Prince said traffic and parking studies they have undertaken indicate that will be enough. “I think it’s a good site for the proposed use,” she said. “I think it’s a good opportunity for Amico and a good opportunity for the town.” Continued on Page 4

Town council to temporarily expand fishing area in Navy Yard Park By Ron Giofu

When the silver bass are running in the Detroit River, there will likely be a lot more fisherman in Navy Yard Park trying to catch them. Town council will be extending the fishing area in the southern end of the park from June 1-13 and fencing off the area. The idea will be tried thanks to a delegation from local resident Kevin Sprague and a motion put forth by Councillor Donald McArthur. Sprague noted that both resident and out-of-town visitors alike come to town to fish, with the latter including people from as far as the Toronto-area. Many, he said, are surprised Amherstburg has only 53-feet of legal fishing area in Navy Yard Park. Sprague said the town risks losing significant revenue from visitors as he

believed many would visit restaurants or buy gas while in the area. “Amherstburg can pursue economic opportunities that have been ignored for too long,” he said. Sprague suggested taking down two “No Fishing” signs near the existing fishing area temporarily. “By the end of June, everything can be returned to normal,” he said. An official declaration of how far the fishing area will temporarily be extended to was not made, but McArthur suggested going as far as the sidewalk even with the Murray St. entrance to the park. He recalled seeing lineups of fisherman in Windsor and speaking with business owners who saw a upswing in sales during that time. It could also be a good news story for the town, he added. “I think it would have a positive

Manager of licensing and enforcement Nicole Rubli suggested fencing to keep residents safe, something agreed to by CAO John Miceli, with the latter adding that the cost of fencing would be cheaper than a lawsuit should something happen. “There are costs we will incur that are not in our current budget,” said Miceli. Councillor Patricia Simone asked about whether the town could use the same fencing that will be used for Ribfest later this year at the Libro Centre. Miceli indicated that is on order and not guaranteed by June 1, so fencing may have to be rented. Councillor Marc Renaud noted that someone is going to have to police the fishing area during that season. “There’s got to be consistent enforcement to make it doable,” said Renaud.

impact,” said McArthur. “I think it’s a really good way to put Amherstburg on the map. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, Let’s monitor it until the end of silver bass season. Let’s give it a shot.” Councillor Michael Prue pointed out there were numerous concerns to overflowing garbage cans to people pitching tents in the park and even cleaning fish in the public washrooms. He wanted to know how ready staff can be to enforce rules and keep the park clean. Director of parks, recreation and culture Phil Roberts said that staff resources are tight but indicated some resources could be put in place. He cautioned that such visitors aren’t tourists in the “traditional sense” as some sleep in their cars, adding the park could take abuse that “would not sit well with residents.”

Councillor questions police staffing levels after Facebook post By Ron Giofu

A Facebook post that has made the rounds led to a town councillor questioning the level of policing the town is receiving at nights. A post on the “My Viewpoint” Facebook page by Alan Halberstadt entitled “One Lonely Cop” stated the belief “that all is not well with the marriage between Amherstburg police services and Windsor police services” and questioned the level of service the town is receiving. The post quotes minutes that read: “At the March 26 meeting of the executive of the police union,

President Jason Dejong reported that Director Shawn McCurdy, Administrator Ed Parent and he met with Superintendent Frank Providenti, Inspector Jay Belaire and Staff Sgt. Dave Deluca on Amherstburg deployment issues. Concerns have been raised that one member may, at times, be left to patrol the entire town. Management said there are ways to prevent this, but if it is unavoidable the service will authorize a call-in. There was also a discussion on the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. start times vs 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Management advised they are currently unable to do this with the transition.

As well it was determined it will only work if everyone in the detachment works the same hours. Discussion about considering vote before the end of the year.” Councillor Patricia Simone brought up the issue at Monday night’s town council meeting and was told by both senior administration and the head of the Windsor Police Service’s Amherstburg Detachment that it wasn’t an issue. “That issue identified by yourself is not an issue,” said CAO John Miceli. “I’ve been assured it’s not an issue.” Continued on Page 4

There is demolition activity within the former St. Bernard School in preparation for the new Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic. “We’ve got demolition going on right now. We’ve got Jones (Group) at the site,” said chief administrative officer (CAO) John Miceli. Interior walls are being demolished and asbestos and other materials are being removed from the former St. Bernard School building. The clinic will be part of a “community hub” being created at the site, located at 320 Richmond St. The demolition is anticipated to last two to three weeks with construction to begin shortly thereafter. There will be multiple rooms within the clinic for examinations, treatments, reception and other services. Miceli said the clinic will occupy the greater portion of a wing at the former Catholic elementary school, or 4,601 square feet. “Our goal is to get them in there for late-summer,” said Miceli. The cost of renovations is roughly $665,000 and that will be funded through the province. Pauline Gemmell, executive director with the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, said there are people that are anticipating the clinic’s opening. “I’ve been receiving many calls from residents wanting to know when the clinic will open. We’re hoping for an August opening date,” she said. “I’m currently looking at bringing in the first of the three Ministry of Health-funded nurse practitioners to begin the set-up of the clinical areas. This position will be hired ahead of the other two NPs in order to assist us with the set-up of the clinical areas as well as to help us set up our electronic systems including our electronic medical records program. Each of our clinics are networked together and we’ll be bringing Amherstburg into that network.” Gemmell added that they will start posting updates on the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic website, found at www.ecnplc.com. “Our staff and board of directors are excited to be

Policing levels remain the same: DeLuca Continued from Page 2 Staff Sgt. Dave DeLuca said the issue stems from Windsor Police Association minutes that were leaked to the media. He referred to it as “fake news” and that policing levels are the same as when the Amherstburg Police Association was patrolling the town. A statement issued by DeLuca states: “As you are aware the Windsor Police Service does not comment on Operational Resources. I can confirm to you however, that the Windsor Police Service is meeting or exceeding the contractual obligations to provide policing services in the Town of Amherstburg. The staffing numbers and deployment at the Amherstburg Detachment of the Windsor Police Service mirror those of the former Amherstburg Police Service. In addition to our standard deployment, the Amherstburg Detachment has the added enhancement of immediate access to all of the specialty units of the Windsor Police Service.” Councillor Donald McArthur said he went for a run on the weekend and saw numerous police cruisers out and about. “I really think you guys are everywhere all of the time,” McArthur told DeLuca. McCurdy referred the matter to DeLuca, adding the association will not be commenting on the issue.

Planning process for hotel proceeds

Continued from Page 1 There is no estimated cost at this stage, Prince said, as not only the size of the hotel has to be determined, but the amenities within as well. There is also the issue of determining what room rates will be. “We’ve held this land for over 15 years,” she said, noting that when the town started planning for the eventual development of the festival plaza at the Duffy’s site, Amico decided to move forward. “We’re at a bit of a standstill because we don’t have the Official Plan or zoning bylaw amendments,” she told council. After the meeting, Prince indicated that she believed it was “a very successful meeting” and they hope to have all necessary approvals by summer. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche, who chaired Monday night’s meeting in the absence of Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, said such a hotel would mean a lot to the town. “It affects tourism, sports tourism, economic development and jobs,” said Meloche. “It’s something the town has needed for years.” Meloche pointed out Prince’s statement about the town’s purchase of the Duffy’s site and that he is confident that Amico can get the hotel built. “They want to work with council,” he said. Meloche added: “This project will bring a lot of opportunity to Amherstburg, jobs as well.” Manager of planning services Frank Garardo noted that the traffic and parking studies were submitted and that administration will bring a report to council in the future. Gore St. resident Michael Harris, who lives next to where the proposed hotel, had his own concerns about traffic and parking.

Harris noted that he rebuilt a home on the site believing that a three-storey hotel would be built. He also said there have been a pair of serious accidents in the area and questioned having access off of Gore St. plus the proximity of the building to the intersection. Harris noted he also owns a home on Ramsay St. and that offers to sell the home to Amico didn’t work out, though Prince said she is open to further negotiations. “The biggest issue is parking. You want to limit parking,” said Harris. “What happens when Duffy’s is developed? Everyone will be looking for a parking spot.” Dalhousie St. resident Gary Wellman didn’t view an extra storey or Gore St. access to be major issues. He said developers are willing to sink money into the town and believed town council should consider their wishes. “The benefits to the community far exceed the objections,” he believed. Wellman acknowledged while there are still meetings regarding planning as well as with heritage committee to come, he said he would still like the process “fast tracked” if possible. Councillor Michael Prue also had concerns over parking, but noted they have to legally hear from all sides and consider all issues. Director of planning, development and legislative services Mark Galvin told council of his background working for a hotel and that “90 per cent of the time there is adequate parking.” He said administration will look at the studies and give their advice to council. Councillor Marc Renaud said residents want a hotel and noted the proponents have done the studies. “When they come back to council, we’ll have a better idea of what their parking needs are,” he said.

Resident thankful for support after wife’s passing Hi folks, this is an unfortunate letter because my wife Judy died April 26. But this is a thank to all of you. It’s been devastating to me but, Amherstburg never fails to rise to an occasion. Many of you might know the ridiculous details you have to go through to “do the right thing.” First, there the companies you deal with, insurance, auto, pensions etc. I found companies that almost made it impossible to reach a human being and I am hard of hearing not very computer literate and was put on hold or transferred at Royal Bank Insurance for car and condo for over 40 minutes. When I finally got someone he could not speak English. The wonderful folks at Bank of Montreal spent over 2 hours getting through to companies I could not reach. Families

First was great, River Town Times got my wife’s obituary in just before deadline, the Doctors and staff of AFHT and the pharmacy went above the call of duty. My brothers at the Masonic Temple and my friends at Knights of Columbus were wonderful. My terrific daughter Sandy, her family and my son-in-laws family, the Pillons were just so great. There were over 100 at Judy’s memorial service, it was so overwhelming I am still in awe. I hope none of you, in a time of mourning have to go through the red tape that’s still consuming me. Guest speaker calls for “an even better Amherstburg” By Ron Giofu

plans to “return almost every dollar we raise right back into the community.” Peddie extended the invitation for other community leaders to join the board, stating there are two to three positions still open. Peddie told of the “personal journey of learning and growth” he has been on since retirement. Deciding to learn about what it took to be a good community leader, he believed the best approach to be one that – to quote from a book from Dr. Roger Martin – laid bricks “to help increase the robustness of their community foundation.” Peddie said that book, his own travels, research, reading and networking convinced him he should be a metaphoric brick layer. “During these past couple years, I have learned a lot of community best practices and met a lot of knowledgeable, positive and impressive people,” he said. “But unfortunately, I have also seen the opposite of that – the naysayers, the status quo, the NIMBY’s – people who resist change using the rallying call ‘not in my backyard.’ People who want things but aren’t willing to pay the price.” Continued on Page 10

Retired MLSE CEO and president Richard Peddie was the guest speaker at the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce’s Business Exellence Awards last Thursday night at Pointe West Golf Club.

The Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce held its 14th annual business excellence awards last Thursday night with the evening’s guest speaker calling for “an even better Amherstburg.” Richard Peddie, whose accomplished career included being the retired CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), addressed the crowd of nearly 200 at Pointe West Golf Club and said that Amherstburg has “been on a bit of a roll” with news businesses and hotels proposed, rising property values “and an increased feeling of optimism.” “That buzz is not only being felt here in our town, it’s also being recognized by the media and people from outside the town,” said Peddie. Peddie pointed out the recent Festivals & Events Ontario (FEO) awards the town picked up, including best new festival, River Lights as a top 100 festival and the “reFriday, May 31, 2019 ally big one,” municipality of the year. 5 - 7 p.m. Legion Branch 157 “I really believe the best is yet to come,” said Peddie. Local family hides “#ABURGRocks” in memory of son

AFMHS welcoming new members

The Jimmerfield family, along with friends and family, helped hide painted rocks in Navy Yard Park Saturday night. Alicia Jimmerfield started the initiative as a way to remember her child that passed away. By Ron Giofu

A local family took part in the #ABURGRocks initiative but did so with a special memory. Alicia and Chad Jimmerfield, along with several members of their family and friends, were in Navy Yard Park Saturday night hiding 120 painted rocks around the park as part of the initiative started by the town’s tourism department a couple of years ago. However, they did so in memory of their son. “It would have been our son’s 11th birthday,” explained Alicia. “I typically do something to celebrate his birthday.” Continued on Page 8

Continued from Page 6 As part of Bob (‘Rhodo Bob’s’) Sutherland’s dream and with the approval of Town Council, Amherstburg came to be know as the “Rhododendron Capital of Ontario.” At that time the Committee introduced over 13,000 ‘rhodos’ and azaleas to the area. To promote the area, the “Garden Tour Weekend” was born. While the King’s Navy Yard Park was being developed, the Fort Malden Horticultural Society began undertaking the development of a new park in the north end of Town which is known today as Seagram’s Park. Under the then Horticultural President, Charlie Bowyer and Bob Sutherland the new park bursting with ‘rhodo’ and azalea plantings and became a drawing card for visitors and citizens alike. According to Sharon Colman, from 1986 to 1999, the Fort Malden Horticultural Society spent $26,197.00 in the beautification of Amherstburg, the majority of which, was spent on the Seagram’s Park. In January of 2010, the Fort Malden Horticultural Society made application to the Ontario Agricultural and Horticultural Organization, to change its name to present day Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society (AFMHS). According to the Society’s President, Dr. Allan Halowski “We are proud to carry on the tradition of the past 113 years. Our activities include:

Local family places rocks in memory of infant son

Continued from Page 7 The Jimmerfields lost their son Xander when he was only 11-days-old and Alicia explained that something is done every year since to celebrate his birthday. It was the second year they took part in the #ABURGRocks initiative, with 80 rocks being brought to the park last year. About 25 people took part Saturday night. “I do crafts to cope with the grief,” she said. “This ties into it.” The couple has had four sons since Xander’s passing, she noted. Alicia, who operates a small online business at www.squishyhippie.com that sells have a rosin press service and cannabis accessories, said they are going to try and make it an annual tradition to hide painted rocks in Navy Yard Park. She even is hoping to expand it. “Hopefully next year we can get a permit from the town and make it a public event,” she said. Alicia also noted that her mother passed away last year so they took donations during last Saturday’s get-together. She noted they raised $30 for Erie Shores Hospice in Leamington and made the donation on Mother’s Day.

Local sisters donate parents’ antique piano, sofa to Belle Vue By Ron Giofu A pair of local sisters have donated an antique piano and sofa to the Belle Vue Conservancy. Carmel and Patricia Ravanello have made the donations in memory of their parents Ottorino and Mary LaRosa Ravanello. The piano is a Mathushek Piano built in 1862, Carmel explained. “This piano has been in our family since I was a little girl and unfortunately, now with the passing of my mother neither me nor my siblings have a suitable home to present it in,” she said. “The piano was actually 100years-old when our father purchased it for our mother as a gift and it has been

in our family for 60 years.” The sofa is also a very rare antique Empire sofa built in approximately 1830, added Carmel. “We have offered them to the Belle Vue house, as a donation, to help in their cause in furnishing the home with period pieces,” she said. Carmel said, “people need to enjoy these antiques” and when they learned they could donate them to the Belle Vue Conservancy, they took advantage of the opportunity as they believe it is the perfect place to display them. She acknowledged it will take a few years before the Belle Vue house is restored, so the piano and sofa will be stored elsewhere until then. Continued on Page 10

Peddie now heading up the Amherstburg Community Foundation

Continued from Page 5 Every community has “NIMBY’s,” Peddie stated, and noted Amherstburg isn’t different in that regard. “Personally, I haven’t every seen a community where the loud status quo group of citizens isn’t a factor,” said Peddie. “However, the real difference between underperforming communities versus the good, progressive, growing, leading communities is leadership - leadership from the community’s elected officials and leadership from the non-elected community leaders who don’t allow the bad actors to be a negative factor.” While stating such people should be heard, he suggested that a lot of credence by given to “a loud but small group who yell and criticize just about anything new on social media.” Peddie called for the public to aspire to have a community that is positive and one that uses empirical data, science and international best practices for making decisions. “Aspire to be a community that is progressive and

Richard Peddie addresses almost 200 people at the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards last Thursday evening. dreams about being even better,” he said, “because standing still is never an option.” Realization of community ambitions means the town has to be invested in, he added. “It is a simple fact that great communities cost

money. They are never free,” said Peddie. “In today’s ‘anti-tax’ world, too many politicians are elected on a promise to only increase taxes at or below inflation or claim that they don’t need tax increases because they will find cuts and the famous ‘efficiencies.’ While all organizations can find some efficiencies, they will seldom cover the ability to have low taxes. Low taxes are a formula that is always doomed to fail.” Peddie believed that a community that keeps taxes really low will never have the necessary funds to invest properly in roads, parks and services that make a community liveable for all residents. “Low taxes will also not allow us to invest in exciting new initiatives that will make the community even more liveable in the future,” he said. Peddie concluded by congratulating all the business excellence award winners and finalists, believing they are making a positive difference. “I encourage all of you, when you leave tonight, be bricklayers for an even better Amherstburg,” he stated.

parents so they are “very pleased” to be able to make the donation. Their mother died in 2015 at age 91. Shirley Curson-Prue, president of the Belle Vue Conservancy, indicated they may also have a dining room set donated to them as well with the possibility of using that in a smaller boardroom at Belle Vue. The donations came as a result of a phone call, Curson-Prue pointed out. After speaking with an artist who is affiliated with the conservancy, she said she was told “don’t you dare let this go. We have to find a place for it.” The sisters are also looking into possibly purchasing a window in memory of their parents, Curson-Prue indicated. General Amherst student wins gold at Skills Ontario competition By Ron Giofu

For the second straight year, a student from General Amherst High School took the top spot in the precision metal division of the Skills Ontario competition. Cade Wright, a Grade 12 student is this year’s winner and he managed to repeat the feat of last year’s winner Devin Paquette, also was also from General Amherst. The competition was held in Toronto May 6-8. Asked if he was surprised to take home the gold, Wright responded “yes and no.” “I was expecting to place but not first,” he said. “I feel pretty good about it” Wright, an OYAP student at General Amherst, explained that he grew up working with his hands, so he feels comfortable with the machinery. “It comes easy to me,” he said. “It’s something that I’ve been doing for a while.” The Skills Ontario competition saw him have to work for half of a day on a lathe and the other half on

He says he enjoys what he does and is interested in a career as a millwright. “It’s never the same thing,” he said. “It’s always something different.” Teacher Rodney Levesque pointed out that Wright works part-time in a plant in Oldcastle named KIS. He hopes the recent success of both Wright and Paquette will get even more students interested in the metal trades offered at General Amherst. “I’ve always had a placement for every OYAP student I’ve had,” said Levesque.

Cade Wright, a Grade 12 student at General Amherst High School, won the gold medal in the precision metal category of the Skills Ontario competition. He will now compete nationally at a competition in Halifax later this month.

New yoga studio celebrates grand opening By Ron Giofu

McHappy Day

SUBMITTED PHOTO

This year's McHappy Day was held at McDonald's restaurants around the country, including the Amherstburg location. While the number of how much was raised locally is not yet available, the early total for Windsor-Essex County is $170,000 and is anticipated to increase. A number of local volunteers, from police, fire, council and more participated in the May 8 event. Amherstburg Public School raised over $700 in a "loonie drive" and that will be incorporated into the local store's total.

A new yoga studio celebrated its grand opening last Wednesday morning. H’OM Yoga and Barre has opened in the top floor at 79 Richmond St., above Storey and Denomme Family Dentistry, with the new business being owned by Lisa and Dan Mitchell. Lisa explained that they moved to Amherstburg from Windsor last December to move closer to family and opened the studio shortly thereafter. “We just feel the town needs more wellness,” she said. While there is yoga offered, they also instruct in barre, which Lisa describes as a fusion of yoga, pilates and ballet. “We couldn’t ask for a better location,” Dan added. Dan said living in Amherstburg has “a different vibe” than living in Windsor. He noted that he grew up in Amherstburg and “I just can’t get away from it.” H’OM Yoga and Barre has eight staff members, including Lisa, and according to its website, the business originated in downtown Windsor in the Capitol Theatre. It is a family-run business, as one of the couple’s nieces teaches there.

“The support of family is tremendous,” he said. “That’s the key for any business, I believe.” For information, people can visit the business on the “Schedule Bliss” app or view their website online at https://homyogabarre.com.

Amherstburg native part of Schmalz Cup championship team Adam Bramburger is the general manager of the Napanee Raiders By Ron Giofu An Amherstburg native is part of the top Junior C hockey team in the province. Adam Bramburger is the general manager of the Schmalz Cup champion Napanee Raiders, with the Schmalz Cup being awarded to the top team in the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL). Napanee defeated the Grimsby Peach Kings in five games in the finals. The PJHL is the same league the Amherstburg Admirals play in with the Admirals being in the Stobbs Division while the Raiders came out of the Tod Division. “Junior C hockey has been a big part of my life for a long time. I can remember skating before the old Vikings team as an atom in the afternoons and begging my parents to stay a little longer,” said Bramburger. “I always thought having teams was a great thing for the the community in so many was and was fortunate to see Amherstburg get its team back a few years ago. It was a bonus for me that guys I grew up playing with in Dan Pettypiece’s hockey schools are running a team in our league now.” The Raiders have always been a big thing in Napanee, Bramburger added, and became a major part of his life in 2003 when he was the beat reporter with the Napanee Beaver. “I spent six years covering them and four years as league convener, but felt I wanted a chance to compete. I was given the opportunity to

SPECIAL TO THE RTT

The Napanee Raiders recently won the Schmalz Cup, emblematic of the top Jr. C hockey team in Ontario. GM Adam Bramburger, an Amherstburg native, is crouching at left. manage a decade ago and we’ve been building to this ever since,” he said. “I just love providing a place for young men to learn about teamwork, sacrifice, and giving to their community. Six years ago, we hired a former Windsor Spitfire, Mike Hartwick, as head coach — some might recall he was teammates with Denny Purdie for a brief while — and he and his staff have really put in the work on-ice, while we’ve pulled together a great support group off the ice raising money and building the team’s profile.” Bramburger added that they took some lumps over the years but have now built a reputation as being a good

place to play adding that some top-end talent has come through in recent years. “Last year, Ryan Casselman, a first team all-star in Junior A had an NCAA team renege on a scholarship and he wanted to come home and play for the love of the game. Adding him to a core that made our division final was a great piece,” he said. “A year ago, we thought we had the team to win the Schmalz Cup, but we were upset in the first round by an Amherstview team with a hot goalie and a willingness to work. I don’t think the boys forgot that feeling and it motivated them. We also caught a break in the summer with Port Hope’s

ownership deciding not to go for it again. One of their players was coming home here to go to school and, when that news broke, he encouraged his linemates to look at coming along too. It made a deep team a lot deeper.” The Raiders’ leadership and our coaching staff did a great job of keeping the players grounded and reiterating that they hadn’t won anything yet, Bramburger added. “We had a great dressing room full of guys who wanted to do anything for one another to win and they sacrificed. We had university guys playing on the road knowing they had morning exams, other guys were black-and-blue from injuries — they just knew their end goal and sacrificed for their brothers,” he stated. “To be a part of the group that assembled this team and to experience this moment with them is out of this world.” After winning the Schmalz Cup, Bramburger said he was on the ice with the team and he “just shook my head in awe and couldn’t believe such a longtime dream came true. We’ve had the time of our lives celebrating this week — and that’s saying something because you come to love all the little moments, the bus rides, and interactions with the boys. It’s something we’ll never forget and it’s something I’d love to replicate.” Continued on Page 19

Lady Gens eliminated in WECSSAA “AA” soccer playoffs At least 13-14 players expected to return to next year’s senior girls team By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens’ soccer season is over. The Lady Gens were on the road Monday for a WECSSAA “AA” playoff game against Walkerville. However, General Amherst’ season came to an end thanks to a 6-2 loss. The Lady Gens were in regular season action twice last week, once on the road and another time at home. Unfortunately for General Amherst, they lost both games to finish the regular season with a 1-7 record. The Lady Gens kicked off the week last Tuesday afternoon in Kingsville, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lady Cavaliers. Brittnee Meloche and Julia Pidutti scored for General Amherst. The regular season finale was Wednesday at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. The Lady Gens hung tough, particularly since they were playing with only 10 players, but fell to the visiting Essex Red Raiders 1-0. “Our girls played really well,” Lady Gens head coach Eric Campbell. “Positionally and as a team, it was a full team effort.” Campbell noted that with the lack of players against Essex, they didn’t have anyone on the bench so the players on the field had to stay out there the entire game.

The General Amherst Lady Gens lost 1-0 to Essex last Wednesday. Julia Pidutti leaps for the ball (above) while Olivia Aucoin battles in traffic for the ball against several Essex players (below).

Campbell noted that the game versus the Red Raiders was a rescheduled game from one that was to have been played in Essex, so many of the players couldn’t attend due to other commitments. “It was tough to change plans at the last minute,” he said. This was a “developmental” year for the General Amherst girls program, Campbell stated, and expects at least 13-14 players to return for the 2020 WECSSAA senior girls soccer season. “We’re developing for next year,” said Campbell. “The future is bright. I’ve got a solid group of returning players.” Campbell added this year’s team was fun to coach. “I got a group of really nice kids,” he said. “I’m kind of sad it’s over.”

Bramburger optimistic for Amherstburg’s Jr. C team

“I can’t expect any more effort out of them,” Campbell stated after the Essex game.

Continued from Page 18 Bramburger also believed Amherstburg’s Jr. C team is heading in the right direction. “I really believe the Admirals are on the right path to contention too. There’s some great local talent involved and I love seeing the support they have from the community. One day it’d really be something to see the Raiders playing in the Libro Centre. Once this celebration fades, I’m sure we’ll all be working hard for that same goal,” he said.

Bulldogs boys baseball records first victory of the season General Amherst defeats Riverside for first win of season By Ron Giofu

The General Amherst Bulldogs boys baseball team is now 1-3 on the season with the most recent game giving them their first win. The Bulldogs knocked off the Riverside Rebels last Friday afternoon at the Libro Centre after losing 7-2 to Belle River at home Wednesday and 10-7 to Assumption last Monday on the road. Coach Kris Meloche was happy with the win and noted they are trying to build up the Bulldogs baseball team. “We’re trying to develop the baseball program,” said Meloche. Meloche said they are taking a “grassroots” approach and want to work with players even before they get to high school, such as players in Grades 7 and 8. “It’s a process,” he said, following the game with Belle River, a team he said is one of the better teams in the WECSSAA league. “We’ve been fighting in every game,” said Meloche. Meloche said they are still teaching baseball fundamentals to the current group of Bulldogs, as some haven’t played at a high level yet. He believes the pace of the play is picking up but noted the Bulldogs are young as they have four Grade 12 players, two Grade 11 players with the rest being in Grade 9 or 10.

The goal is to one day host the OFSAA regionals in Amherstburg. “There’s some excitement around our program,” he said.

Verdi Club gives update, says they are open to new members By Ron Giofu Despite the building being sold in late 2016, the Verdi Club is still active and its senior membership is encouraging more people to get involved. Joe Capaldi, who is the current president, and director Tino Riccio state that people can find out about what is going on with the club, the state of its finances including what is happening with the funds still left from the sale of the building, and any other activities and issues surrounding the club by simply paying $50 and becoming a member. “We abide by the constitution and the constitution is

very clear, said Capaldi. “The constitution is very clear. Those elected or appointed to the Verdi Club's board of directors are governed by Robert's Rules of Order and the finances have been subject to three reports to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Capaldi added. “It's on the up and up, he said. Capaldi noted that “we're all involved in the community. We're proud of what our ancestors did. “We want to honour our past and our ancestors and not let it die, said Riccio. “We sold the building but the club is still there. If there are concerns from

members or former members, they can keep their memberships up-to-date and come to meetings to voice their concerns or opinions, Capaldi noted. He said that they have nothing to hide with Riccio noting that when a meeting is called, they try and reach all of the active membership. “We have been earnestly taking care of the money, stated Capaldi. The Verdi Club is in negotiations to occupy space in a new facility in Amherstburg, he noted. They tried two venues that the membership was in favour of, he added, but “it didn't work as “the membership wanted our own

place. They are now looking at a third location with the lease agreements being drawn up. “We go with what the membership wants, he said, with the location not being revealed until the agreements are signed. The club is open to those of Italian descent or those who marry into Italian families. Riccio said new members are welcome as are new ideas and concerns. “Bring your ideas. We look forward to that, said Riccio. “Anyone's idea is good. For information, contact Capaldi at 519-980-0929 or 519-736-2555. Riccio can be reached at 519-981-3700.

Town providing sandbags for residents living on the water

The Town of Amherstburg has announced that it will be assisting with sandbag distribution for residents of properties on the water’s edge. Residents from County Road 41 to Malden Road, and additionally properties along the water in the South Riverview area can obtain sandbags if they need them. The town states that potentially-affected residents within those areas can obtain up to 100 sand bags per property to begin their own preparation for a possible flooding event. Bags can be obtained at the Amherstburg Public Works yard, located at 512 Sandwich St. S., from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the public works south yard at 6744 Concession 6 South Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sand is available at any time at the latter location. Residents are asked to bring their own shovel. Bags weigh approximately 40 lbs when full so residents are also advised to ensure their vehicles can carry this weight safely. The town also states that when picking up bags, residents will be required to present proof of residence. Only those properties at risk of flooding along water’s edge will be assisted at this time, the town states. An emergency has not been declared at this time. For further information, the public is asked to refer to www.amherstburg.ca or www.amherstburgfire.com.

Bulldogs conclude regular season with 1-0 loss to Essex the eight-game regular season with a 3-4-1 record, didn’t lose a game by more than one goal during the regular season. The Bulldogs were in Kingsville the day before,

earning a 2-2 tie against the Cavaliers last Tuesday afternoon. Jake Fields and Aaron Brush scored for General Amherst in that contest. Blunt said they got into the playoffs as a ninth seed last year and managed to advance to the WECSSAA “AA finals so he is hoping they can recapture some of that magic again this year.

The General Amherst Bulldogs boys soccer team isn’t entering the WECSSAA “AA” playoffs with a win, but are still hoping to gather some momentum when the post-season starts. The Bulldogs hosted the Essex Red Raiders last Wednesday evening at the Libro Centre in a game that was relocated from Essex due to field conditions. The Red Raiders, now the visiting team, still came away with a 1-0 victory thanks to a second half goal from Owen Ambrose. “That was a tough one today,” said General Amherst head coach Gavin Blunt after the game. “We couldn’t put the ball in the net. We had our chances.” “Essex capitalized, we didn’t,” added assistant coach Spencer Petrozzi. “We didn’t capitalize on our chances.” Blunt added “we need to tighten up a bit. I thought we played well defensively.” Offense has been somewhat of an issue this season, the coaches added, with Blunt hoping they turn that around. 433 Sandwich Blunt noted that the Bulldogs, who finished
