Farmers Market able to open for 2020 season By Ron Giofu As the Ontario economy starts to slowly re-open amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Amherstburg Farmers Market was one of those that opened up to the public. The market opened for the 2020 season last Saturday at its new location at G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. G.L. Heritage co-owner Jen DesjardinsGrondin said the craft brewery and the market have been planning the opening day for weeks but things were on hold as they awaited the necessary approvals to legally hold the event. Desjardins-Grondin said they received the final go-ahead from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) last Wednesday and the Amherstburg Farmers Market and G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. were able to execute their plans. “They turned around our application very quickly,” said Desjardins-Grondin, of the WECHU. While original plans called for vendors to be close together around a fence line, things had to be changed due to the coronavirus pandemic and booths had to be spread apart and a site plan and traffic flow plan had to be turned into the WECHU for their approval. “We have everything in place as far as physical distancing and things like that,” said Amherstburg Farmers Market co-ordinator Rita Casagrande.

Vendors either had their produce pre-bagged or were bagging it on site for the customers and people were not being allowed to touch the food until after they purchased it. Both Desjardins-Grondin and Casagrande reported a steady flow of people streaming through the parking lot at G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. “As of now, everyone is doing a good job respecting social distancing,” said Desjardins-Grondin, roughly 90 minutes after the market opened for the season. Ten vendors were throughout the parking lot for the opening day of the market, but only essential goods such as produce, pre-packaged food being offered. Pet food was also allowed on site. Original plans called for crafters, pony rides and entertainment to be part of the market but those were shelved until some point in the future due to the pandemic. “We had big plans for opening day,” said Casagrande. “This is good too.” Casagrande added people were happy to get out of their homes and go somewhere, with Desjardins-Grondin stating many people were wearing masks including the vendors and the shoppers. “It’s a manageable amount (of vendors) for opening day,” said Desjardins-Grondin, “while we implemented all of the safety protocols.”

Dorothy Kryworuchko Languedoc and her husband David Languedoc were just one of the ten vendors at the opening of the Amherstburg Farmers Market last Saturday at G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. The market got clearance to open from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and vendors were spaced apart in an effort to have them physically distanced from one another. Many people joined the Languedocs in wearing masks. Continued on Page 2

Social distancing at the Market Continued from Page 1 Desjardins-Grondin said they focused on a “grab and go” type of experience due to the ongoing pandemic. “This is meant to be a shop, don’t stop shopping experience,” she said, adding G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. changed its hours to 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays in reaction to the market being there. Rachel Myers, who was running the Pierogi booth, had a clear piece of plastic across the front of her area but was happy to be at the Amherstburg Farmers Market despite the new restrictions due to COVID-19. “It’s good,” she said. “It’s different.” Myers noted there was no sampling

this year but said she was still happy to be working outside. “We’ve been doing it for six years,” she said. “It’s a little harder to sell without being able to sample but you have to be a little creative.” Warren Boldt, who was at the Mr. D’s Produce booth, said he didn’t know what to expect when he came to the market. “It’s going well,” he said. “People are happy to be out of the house.” The Amherstburg Farmers Market will be open every Saturday through October from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. is located at 8728 Howard Ave. To become a vendor or for more

I love it. It’s therapeutic for me. I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl.” The first book Bondy-Pare was published in was “Chicken Soup for the Soul – Find Your Inner Strength.” That came out in 2014 and detailed a trip she took with her ailing father to the Grand Canyon. They defied doctor’s orders and went on the trip and her father was so excited by the trip he lived another nine months. “That’s the story I’m most proud of,” she said. The second story was published in the “Canadian Christmas” book that “Chicken Soup for the Soul” was published in 2017. It detailed when her son brought

The current story in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Laughter is the Best Medicine” features a tale of a home renovation project gone wrong. It is a humorous anecdote that actually happened to Bondy-Pare and her husband. Bondy-Pare, who is working on a book of her own for her children and grandchildren, said she is thrilled to be part of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series again. “It’s a book about total emotional health,” she said. “I love it.” “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Laughter Is the Best Medicine” features 101 feel-good stories, all true stories told by the people who lived through these embarrassing, hilarious, and truly human experiences. Editor-in-chief and publisher Amy Newmark says in a press release, “I must have sounded like a crazy person cackling away in my office while I was selecting and then editing these stories. Even on the third pass through them I was laughing.” Newmark continues, “If laughter is the best medicine, then this book is your prescription. Turn off the news and spend a few days not following current events. Instead, return to the basics—humanity’s ability to laugh at itself.”

A newly launched podcast aims to give advice and inspiration to youth and emerging leaders and its also helping area charities at the same time. Amherstburg resident Linden Crain has launched “Coffee with Crainer,” a podcast that has seen 19 guests in its first two weeks with many more guests lined up for the rest of the month and beyond. Crain, a University of Windsor student, holds online interviews with various political, academic, sports and business leaders from around Windsor-Essex County and streams them live on YouTube and Facebook. “It's been going really well,” Crain reports. “The whole point of the show is to have community leaders give advice to emerging leaders. It's really cool to connect with community leaders and have them share advice and best practices for those growing as leaders.” Crain said many young people may not have a chance to connect with leaders in the area so the podcast is a way to allow them to gain information and tips from those leaders from within the area. After he live streams his interviews, they are not only archived on Facebook and YouTube, but uploaded to Apple Podcast and Spotify as well. The interviews last approximately 20-30 minutes each. Crain states he has had viewers from as far away from Dubai. The idea originated when Crain was watching live streams as part of the ongoing quarantine brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. He decided to fill what he saw as a void and created “Coffee with Crainer” to bring community leaders to the youth. “I think of it as a mentorship for someone,” Crain said of each show, adding he is learning more and more about marketing and public speaking along the way. The charitable aspect has come into play through the sale of “Coffee with Crainer” mugs. For each donation of $25, Crain will deliver a mug to a person's porch. Proceeds from the sale go to non-profit organizations with a $300 donation recently made to the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission. Another $600 has

By Ron Giofu An Amherstburg resident is doing her part to assist others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Elaine Marton has spent the last several weeks doing her part to raise money, food and hygiene items for the Amherstburg Food Bank, which is now housed out of the Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) office. “It was overwhelming when it started,” said Marton. Marton said she was inspired by her niece Krystle Bernauer, who started the MASK4All Facebook page that is encouraging and urging people to wear masks in public to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It stated with a “hug jar” where Marton welcomed donations then it spread to e-transfers and donations left in her home mailbox. People were also coming into her workplace and making donations to her there as well. “I’m overwhelmed with this town,” said Marton.

Goodfellows stepping up to assist local non-profit groups By Ron Giofu The AAM Goodfellows are stepping up and helping the community, although they don’t usually do it this time of year. The Goodfellows have been using some of their emergency funds to donate gift cards from local grocery stores to non-profit agencies in Amherstburg. Goodfellows president Rick Murray pointed out they have given $2,900 to Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) and the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission. The AAM Goodfellows have also provided financial assistance to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), Murray added. “We have a contingency fund that we use in the event of an emergency,” said Murray. “We decided this would be a good time to use the money to help people out.”

The Goodfellows have been providing assistance to the local community organizations for about six weeks or so, said Murray. “We’ll continue to do it. It’s our plan to help out as long as the need is there or until our funds run out. We’re trying to help people out. The members felt it was a good time to give something extra to the community. The community has always supported us and we’re just giving back to the community.” Branka Stewin, program co-ordinator with ACS, pointed out how grateful that agency was to receive the additional assistance. She thanked the AAM Goodfellows for the work they do year-round in the Amherstburg community. “It really comes at a good time,” Amherstburg Food and Fellowship president Tim McAllister added of the donations. “It really helps us out.” McAllister added it was hard to express how

Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest will not be held this year thanks to pandemic By Ron Giofu

Another event will not be held this summer thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and this cancellation will disappoint your taste buds. The Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest has been cancelled, with club president Ann Marie Favot confirming the news last week to the RTT. The eleventh annual Ribfest was to be held July 3-5 at the Libro Centre. “We held off as long as we could to see if there would be any changes,” said Favot. “It was a tough decision. It was a very difficult decision.” Favot noted they could not wait any longer to make a decision, as ribbers, vendors and suppliers needed time to finalize their own plans. “Unfortunately, there’s not enough time,” said Favot. “It’s not going to work.” Currently As attendance for the Ribfest is usually well into accepting the thousands, Favot indicated there were issues new patients around keeping people a safe distance apart during and same-day the pandemic. She said they couldn’t be certain that social distancing requirements could be maintained emergencies! during the Ribfest. Ribfest committee members considered alternative ways of delivering the Ribfest this year, including offering a curbside pickup of ribs, but they still had concerns and questions over safety and maintaining Dr. Roy Dr. Sandra Dr. Dennis social distancing. Petras Frederick Petras “What does that look like?” asked Favot, of a Call for possible curbside service. “Even if they stayed in their cars, how do we manage that?” appointment: Believing it was too difficult to manage and keep

The Amherstburg Rotary Ribfest was busy in 2019 (pictured) but things will not repeat themselves in 2020. The organizing committee had made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Ribfest, which was to have been held July 3-5 at the Libro Centre. people safe at the same time, organizers made the decision to cancel this year’s event. “We definitely don’t want to put anyone at risk,” said Favot. “It was really sad for the community to have to come to this conclusion (to cancel) but it’s for the well-being of everyone.” The Rotary Club of Amherstburg has tentative plans on holding an event in the fall and are hopeful they will be able to do so. However, much depends on COVID-19 and what is allowed to happen at that point in the year. “Hopefully the virus will be gone or at least contained,” said Favot. “We’re not sure when the government will remove restrictions. It’s all based on what happens with the pandemic and how long it lasts.” Favot said Rotarians recognize local businesses are suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic and want to help out, if they can.

Local woman authors first three children’s e-books By Ron Giofu A woman from Amherstburg has penned several new e-books aimed at children. Karen Deighan has authored “The Little Snorkie That Could” and “Sheriff Moe” with both books being available through Amazon. A third book, entitled “Pinky the Earthworm,” was posted to Amazon April 1. Deighan, who is on a leave of absence from her job as an educational assistant at the Greater Essex County District School Board, said she is was inspired to keep helping children after a recent fall at her home. “The Little Snorkie That Could” is based on her dog, which comes from Korea. The dog has been bounced around from family member to family member because of its paranoid nature and now Deighan and her family are housing the dog. When she fell and broke her foot one night while carrying the dog outside, it led to her writing the short story on it. “It’s a children’s picture book,” she explained, noting both books are in the eight to 13-page range. The second book “Sheriff Moe” is based on a little girl she sees waving hello to vehicles

regularly. “I wrote a story about a girl that waves to everyone and loves her community,” said Deighan. Deighan added she did the artwork for both books with “The Little Snorkie That Could” containing pictures of her dog while she painted for “Sheriff Moe.” “I’m trying to send a message in there about good behaviour,” she said. Should there be any proceeds from her books, Deighan added she will donate them to Wings Rehabilitation Centre in Amherstburg. “They are phenomenal for what they do,” Deighan said of Wings, noting she was impressed when she brought an injured bird to them. “I was amazed at all the animals they take care of,” she said. Deighan added that she hopes to keep writing. “I’d like to do it as a hobby,” she said. “If I can somehow donate it to a good cause like Wings, I would feel good about doing that. Hopefully I get better as I go.” Deighan also hopes to inspire others to give to their community in some way.

Keep Fox, Leonard Reading! IN MEMORIAM

Apr. 5, 1933 - May 24, 2019 Remembering a dear husband, father, and Papa on the first anniversary of the day God chose him to walk by His side. You have left behind a deep emptiness in all of our hearts. To hear your voice and feel the warmth of your presence for even one more day would bring us so much joy. Know that you are our hero, and your life was an example and blessing that made this earth a better place. We hope to be together someday, but until then your gentle love lives inside us.

With all our love, your sweetheart May, and family.

Warden encourages caution in warmer weather due to COVID-19 By Ron Giofu

With the warmer weather starting to stick around, the warden of Essex County is urging people to stay apart to stop the spread of COVID-19. In his opening remarks at the most recent online meeting of Essex County council, Warden Gary McNamara offered condolences on behalf of the county to the families of those who have died due to the coronavirus. However, he also thanked people who have been in quarantine, only leaving the house to get essential needs and staying away from each other in an effort to adhere to social distancing guidelines. “You have made a difference and you have saved lives,” said McNamara. However, with the warm weather arriving, McNamara encouraged people to maintain social distancing.

“I know it isn’t easy with the warmer weather but we need to stay at least two metres apart from one another,” the warden stated. People are being urged to stay apart from each other when on trails or when walking. “These are stressful, unprecedented times,” said McNamara. “The key is to practice physical distancing outside. It’s easy to do and we have to remember to do it.” Kingsville Mayor and Deputy Warden Nelson Santos said people are still eager to access library services as well. Santos, the chair of the Essex County Library Board, said the public is showing great interest in checking out books electronically and enjoying audiobooks. Families are taking the opportunity to use the Essex County library and are getting their library cards through the county library board’s website, Santos added.

Keeping spirits up for healthcare workers

Wednesday, May 20, 2020 – River Town Times – 11

Homes and apartments in the Amherstburg area have been thanking all frontline workers, especially those in the healthcare profession, by putting up signs all over their lawns, garage doors and windows. Residents from around all corners of the community have been giving back and showing their gratitude for those in the essential services. RTT PHOTOS BY RON GIOFU

Flooding impacts River Canard

RTT PHOTOS BY RON GIOFU

Heavy rain and high winds in the area have caused roads and low lying properties in the region to flood. One such area impacted is South Riverview Dr. as the Canard River spilled over and water is over the roadway west of Beneteau Dr. The photos were taken Monday morning.
