Amherstburg resident celebrates 100th birthday By Ron Giofu It was a birthday 100 years in the making for Allanion Blake. Blake was honoured with a small parade in his honour outside of his Amherstburg home Sunday afternoon and, a few hours later, was the guest of honour on a two-hour Zoom call where friends, family and dignitaries paid tribute to the main they lovingly refer to as “Brother Blake.” The celebrations were co-ordinated by Windsor and Living Faith Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Joined by wife Beryl, Blake was born in 1920 and was baptized March 31, 1945 at the Shortwood Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The small company of believers were soon relocated to a private home and not very long afterwards they again had to move. In the 1950's, Blake started a second company, which is now the Jack’s Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Born in Jamaica, Blake met and married his late wife Alvaria. The couple had their first child, Dorren Blake. They shared three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. After Alvaria's passing, he migrated to Montreal in 1972 where he attended the Westmount Seventh-Day Adventist Church. “Brother Blake” practiced as an Elder, Sabbath School Teacher and Personal Ministries leader. No soon after visiting the Perth Seventh-day Adventist Church in 1974, he married Beryl Blake on May 26 of that year. He began his diligent work as a porter in the Montreal Children's Hospital, which lasted 19 years. The phrase “Let us think big” rang in their lives constantly. While the two purchased their home in Brockville, Ontario, Beryl established a home care business while Brother Blake continued his position in Montreal. He would visit constantly every weekend. According to the tribute read during the Zoom call, “with their philanthropic heart and great contributions,” they were recognized for their work with those who have intellectual disabilities. “Still thinking big they decided to purchase a group

In 1993, Blake retired from the Montreal Children’s Hospital and was asked no soon after, by Pastor Williams of The Brockville Seventh-Day Adventist
Church to be the head Elder at The Cornwall Church. At the time the church didn’t have a running pastor in place and he accepted the calling and immersed himself in Prison Ministries. Pastor Putt became the next pastor in line running after the previous pastor.

Town gets update on operations during COVID-19 pandemic
Beryl and Allanion Blake watch a Zoom call Sunday evening in their Amherstburg home. They were the subjects of the call as it was a celebration of Allanion’s 100th birthday. His actual birthday was May 26.
By Ron Giofu Town council received an update on the town's operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was learned town hall could re-open in the next few weeks. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche asked a series of questions on town operations, including about costs and restoring operational levels. CAO John Miceli indicated the town has been working in concert with public health recommendations and said they are looking at “systematic ways” to improve conditions for access. Town hall could open as soon as June 12, should council and guidelines set by upper levels of government allow for that to happen. Miceli told town council during Monday night's electronic meeting there would be a cost to re-open places like town hall and keep it safe for the public and staff, including the installation of physical barriers to keep people apart safely. Costs could range in the $40,000-$50,000 range. Should town council give the go-ahead to start re-opening public places like town hall, Miceli indicated both public and staff would have to wear masks as well. He said the town is looking to save money by not hiring previously approved staff positions and not hiring any summer students. There have been “significant savings” in operational costs at the Libro Centre, the CAO added, but additional costs could be incurred through additional sanitation methods. Miceli said it is his responsibility to provide a safe working environment for staff, and believes he can provide it, but needs the approval of town council. He added that conditions under the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a “constantly changing environment.” Councillor Don McArthur added that local restaurants need assistance as well, as “Take Out Tuesdays” help but are not enough to sustain businesses. He called for

Their story continues and what has been accomplished was celebrated Sunday, though his actual 100th birthday was Tuesday. “I feel honoured,” Blake said, after the parade in his honour. Blake added he was “grateful and thankful” to those who organized the celebrations. “I am feeling very good,” he said. “I am administration to work with businesses to possibly open streets and allow for expanded patios, adding he would be more comfortable outside than in a smaller, indoor space should he elect to eat out during the pandemic. Miceli stated the town has met with local businesses and is working with the Amherstburg Chamber of Commerce (ACOC) on the issue. He said it is up to the businesses as well as provincial guidelines to say what type of road closures are needed and what is allowed. The ACOC is also conducting a survey asking what the impacts of COVID-19 have been on the business community. Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said the ACOC reached out to both himself and Miceli and “what they are looking
100-years-old and I did not expect and I did not deserve to live 100 years. Thank God, He saw fit to have me live 100 years.” “Brother Blake” urged children to listen and respect their parents. “Children, please obey your parents,” he said. Beryl said the celebrations were great and they were very appreciative of what everyone did for them. As for their longevity, she said they are both vegetarians and “we praise the Lord for everything. It's in God's hands.”

for, we're already working on.” He added “I know the Chamber is very anxious to get something in place and I'm sure we are as well.” McArthur asked for a report on the matter but Meloche said “time is of the essence” for the business community and “to sit here and wait for two weeks doesn't sit well with me.” DiCarlo said he would be willing to call a special meeting in the interim but much depends on direction given by the Ontario government. At this point, it's all just “speculation” on what could be allowed and when, the mayor said. He said the town is awaiting word on what the province will allow and what the businesses themselves want. “If a meeting is necessary, we'll call one,” said DiCarlo. Miceli added his belief that there may be some hesitation at the provincial level due to an upward spike in COVID-19 cases.

More area events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic By Ron Giofu Additional events in the Windsor-Essex County area have been cancelled with some hitting close to home. Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare has announced the postponement of four of its “signature events” they were to have held in 2020, including one that passed through Amherstburg. The event that came through town was supposed to be next month's Bob Probert Ride, with the next one now scheduled for June 27, 2021. “From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare has made every effort to ensure the safety and health of our patients, our staff, and our community,” the hospital stated in a press release. Vice president of external affairs Bill Marra added: "We very seriously considered a delay for the event (we had alternate dates in September 2020 both the Probert Ride and Heart Breaker Challenge) and still proceed with this year. We went as far as canvassing dates with our partners and supporters. However, given the provincial directives not allowing congregate gatherings, and certainly no real anticipated end in sight for that restriction, and the risk associated with large crowds (we average over 1000 riders and as many as 1400 one year for the Probert event) it was the responsible choice to make and postpone the Ride to 2021." Other events included the Heart Breaker Challenge, with that being rescheduled May 29, 2021; the Big Night Gala rescheduled for November 12, 2021; and the Regional Children's Centre Inaugural Beach Soccer Event has been postponed to July 2021. Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare states that those looking to support the HDGH Foundation through these unprecedented times are welcome to make a donation online anytime by visiting www.hdgh.org/donate. “In addition, a new fund has been established to directly help HDGH mobilize to respond to the fast-evolving needs resulting from the COVID-19 virus. Donate directly to these efforts by visiting hdgh.org/donate and selecting COVID-19 as the area to support,” the hospital states. The 2020 Harrow Fair has also been cancelled as a result of the pandemic. Organizers posted word of the 166-year-old festival's cancellation on their social media sites Saturday. The festival was to be held over Labour Day weekend, but people will have to wait until next September instead. “Because of the government’s declaration of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding social gatherings in the future, it is with great sadness the board of directors of the Harrow & Colchester South Agricultural Society wishes to advise that our 2020 Harrow Fair is officially cancelled,” organizers posted online.
The Bob Probert Ride, as pictured in 2018, will not return in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s event is scheduled for June 27, 2021. According to a press release from Harrow Fair president Ed Gibbs, he noted they “will be forever grateful for the sacrifices made by the many front line workers during these times and are unwilling to put those sacrifices at risk by believing current restrictions will be lessened sufficiently within the next 100 days to hold the 166th presentation of the Harrow Fair in September 2020 as originally planned. It seems unreasonable to ask judges to taste and/or touch hundreds of entries so soon after this experience. It would be irresponsible to ask our volunteers to attend the gates, collect garbage and coordinate activities in such an uncertain time. Plexiglass barriers, masks and arrows directing the flow of the crowd are just not conducive to a fair atmosphere. There is too much to see and do at the Harrow Fair to put these types of restrictions in place.” Gibbs added: “The economic impact of this decision will be felt by many charitable groups, vendors, entertainers, and local businesses that rely on the Harrow Fair, some as their main/major source of revenue. We must consider the safety of all involved and pray that they survive this experience both from a health and fiscal perspective. In this regard we ask our supporters to practice social distancing and keep them in mind when making purchase decisions.” The Harrow Fair is planning to return Labour Day weekend 2021, which will be Sept. 2-5 next year.

Essex County council gets update on finances amid COVID-19 pandemic By Ron Giofu Essex County council received a financial update from its senior administration and while the COVID-19 pandemic has had its impact, the county is still believed to be going to be OK. County CAO Rob Maisonville told council members at the May 22 online meeting that there are still many unknowns but their current projections are that Essex County will have a deficit in the range of $500,000 to $1 million by the end of the year “prefaced on the degree to which additional provincial recoveries are received. In addition to these direct operating exposures, third party requests could easily match this financial deficit, but again, these estimates are highly contingent on provincial recoveries for these programs (social assistance and public health). Efforts to mitigate this potential deficit have and are being reviewed and undertaken. Simple items, such as the elimination of attendance to conferences and seminars, travel related training, studies and expenditures requiring staff/community involvement have all been deferred. New hires, students and contract positions have been either canceled or delayed.” Maisonville told county council members “we’re trying to nail Jello trying to figure out what the costs are going to be at year’s end.” The county’s “saving grace,” Maisonville added, is its financial position. “We have a strong reserve balance that can support us. We have zero debt,” Maisonville said. “If we experience a deficit in the $2-$4-million range, we have a rate stabilization reserve that can support that." Essex County council has the option of instituting a special reserve levy to recoup costs in 2021, but the county CAO doesn’t believe it will come to that. “More detail will follow with the six month variance analysis and subsequent reporting throughout 2020, as greater clarity on the duration, operational and financial impacts of COVID-19 become known,” Maisonville
stated in his report. Maisonville offered high praise for the work being done at the county, including Essex-Windsor EMS and the Sun Parlor Home in Leamington. “Management and staff are committed to the best possible care of our residents at Sun Parlor Home, while ensuring the safety and security of our staff, who are providing compassionate care to the residents in a high stress environment,” Maisonville said of the latter. As for Essex-Windsor EMS, the county CAO stated that since March 12, they have “intensified its operations and is focused on continuing to provide the highest quality of care for the residents in our community. Both COVID-19 and flood-related response are top of mind as staff meet the challenges head on,” Maisonville stated in his report, adding that Essex-Windsor EMS has not experienced any shortages in ambulance staffing. Despite the numerous challenges they face, Maisonville added EMS staff are continuing to do great work.

“They are doing an excellent job and are being very careful,” he said. The recent flooding was also touched on as parts of the region was impacted by heavy rains and high winds which caused lakes and rivers to spill their banks. Maisonville urged residents to have a 72-hour flood kit and a place to go if they have to evacuate as congregate settings are currently not permitted under the COVID-19 pandemic. He said they are engaged with all levels of government in preparing for possible flooding. The Essex County Civic Centre has been closed since mid-March and the county, as well as all seven of its member municipalities, have issued a State of Emergency. Maisonville noted that while it was necessary to close the civic centre, it doesn’t mean services to the public have been cut off. “I’m very proud of the people who work for us and you should be as well,” Maisonville told Essex County council during last Wednesday night's virtual meeting.

The Rotary Club of Amherstburg teamed with the Malden Firefighters Association recently on a barbecue raffle to help the latter’s efforts to restore the original Malden fire hall and a 1946 Ford fire truck. The raffle raised $1,700. Malden Firefighters Association president Nick D’Amore (left), a firefighter at Amherstburg fire station #3, stands with Rotary Club president Ann Marie Favot. firefighter Nick D’Amore, who is the president of the Malden Firefighters Association. The vintage fire truck will be based in the original fire hall, located on the grounds of the former “Little White Church” on County Road 20 at Howard Ave. The hope to have the truck inside in the next few weeks, but the truck still needs repair. “We raised enough to let us get the hall where we needed it to be to get the truck in there,” said D’Amore. “Now that it’s done, we’re shifting our focus to restoring the truck.” D’Amore added they need more money to complete the restoration of the truck. The amount the association needs is approximately $40,000. The original fire hall was restored first, he added, in order to give the fire truck a home. The end goal is to use the vintage fire truck and original fire hall to educate the public and bring it to special events. “This is a vital piece of the town’s heritage,” he said. “We want to preserve a piece of the town’s history.” The fire truck was originally owned by the Township of Malden, then became property of the Town of Amherstburg at amalgamation. When it was put out of service, D’Amore the town donated it to Western Secondary School but it was eventually given back to the town. The town then donated it to the Malden Firefighters Association. “It has changed ownership numerous times,” said D’Amore. D’Amore said the Malden Firefighters Association is non-profit and is thankful for the membership for their dedication to the cause. They have held fundraisers in the past but can’t right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re kind of in a holding pattern right now,” said D’Amore. The association is still accepting donations and D’Amore said “we’ll get what we can.” Ann Marie Favot, president of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg, said the club wants to make sure that the history is preserved. She noted the association was permitted to sell tickets for the barbecue at the club’s Easter Seals fundraising pasta dinner in March and described the raffle as a “joint effort” between the two organizations. “The Rotary Club is proud to continue to support the community and assist the Malden Firefighters Association with their goal,” said Favot. “The Rotary Club will continue to help in every way we can.” The barbecue was won by Dave Varney, a vice president with the Malden Firefighters Association. He will donate it back so it can be used again as part of another fundraiser for the group. For more information on the Malden Firefighters Association or to make a donation, go to their Facebook or Instagram pages or e-mail maldenfirefightersassociation@gmail.com.

Vintage plane flyover spreads cheer and support for frontline workers By Ron Giofu Lovers of historical aircraft and curious onlookers looked to the sky last Thursday night as local organizations got together for a special flyover. The Canadian Historical Aircraft Association teamed with the Windsor Flying Club to honour the area’s frontline and essential workers. It also turned into a tribute to Capt. Jenn Casey of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, who was killed in a tragic accident recently in Kamloops, British Columbia. Planes left Windsor Airport just after 6 p.m. last Thursday evening and the route included Essex, Leamington, Kingsville, Harrow, Amherstburg and LaSalle before passing back over Windsor then going across Tecumseh and Lakeshore. Crowds of curious onlookers lines the Navy Yard Park and other shoreline areas in Amherstburg to watch the two waves of historical planes pass over. “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Capt. Casey who lost her life in a tragic incident yesterday in Kamloops, BC as part of Operation Inspiration. We grieve alongside Jenn’s family, friends and colleagues and are deeply saddened. Blue Skies, Jenn,” the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association stated on their Twitter account (@CH2AHangar). Dubbed the “Inspiration Flight and Tribute,” the flight was originally supposed to be held last Wednesday night but was postponed one night due to high winds on Wednesday evening. “We want to thank all the pilots who volunteered their time and aircraft to spread cheer over Windsor Essex. Our first ever in trail flyover for frontline and essential workers as well as for @ CFSnowbirds (Canadian Forces Snowbirds) to commemorate the life of Capt. Casey,” the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association tweeted last Thursday night’s event.

MASKS4ALL Windsor-Essex donates to Legion, fundraising for other groups By Ron Giofu The locally-founded Facebook group MASKS4ALL Windsor-Essex has attracted many volunteers to help protect the community and now they are giving back to help the town further. Representatives from the group were in front of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 Friday morning where Krystle Bernauer, the administrative co-ordinator of the group, presented a cheque for $530 to Legion president Laurie Cavanaugh. Bernauer explained that the partnership with the Legion began when the Legion asked if Crown Royal bags could be converted into masks. Thanks to seamstress Debby Pajot, the masks were created and MASKS4ALL developed the partnership. While many of the masks that were distributed free of charge, there are some special masks that are created and available only through donation. Some
volunteers sew, while others deliver, pickup materials, handle orders and do whatever needs to be done. They are now creating Canada Day masks for The House Youth Centre and those are available for a minimum $10 donation. “This is non-profit,” she said of the group. MASKS4ALL Windsor-Essex has distributed over 500 masks and have gone beyond the town limits of Amherstburg, with donations going to Windsor, Chatham-Kent and even to the United States. They urge people to stay safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re just helping whoever needs help,” said Bernauer. “It’s non-profit. Everyone wants to give back.” Bernauer added she oversees all the volunteers and orchestrates everything the group does. She processes all donations made and buys the supplies to keep them on track. She estimates roughly $13,175 has been donated thus

far to the group. The public is asked to give the volunteers time to create their masks. The group also accepts requests at masks4allus@gmail.com. “Be patient with us. We’ll get you a mask when we can,” she said. “Stay safe.” Cavanaugh said Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 will use the donation
towards their building fund. She said they are looking to redesign and restore their outdoor patio and the money will assist with that. “We appreciate any help right now until we can re-open,” said Cavanaugh. Royal Canadian Legion is doing some reorganization inside and Cavanaugh said it will be a big surprise when they are finally able to reopen to the public.
Stella Maris School brightens up Richmond Terrace with student art By Ron Giofu The hallways of Richmond Terrace Long-Term Care Home will be brightened up thanks to the efforts of Stella Maris School students. As part of Catholic Education Week, the school encouraged students to submit artwork that will, in turn, be given to Richmond Terrace to encourage frontline health care workers and the residents. “I heard some of the hospitals and nursing homes are looking for artwork,” explained educational assistant Robin Martin. “I brought it up for Catholic Education Week. I thought it would be a good way

for the students to make a positive difference in the community.” As the school is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Stella Maris School teamed with Sobeys with a bin being available at the grocery store for students to drop off their artwork. Stella Maris School principal Brian Marenchin said the theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week was “Ignite Hope,” one that proved to be fitting for this year. However, he noted the theme was decided over a year ago. He said the artwork initiative was a great way for the younger generation to give back to those who came before them, particularly during a tough and stressful time. “The students did a great job,” he said. The school pushed the initiative through its social media accounts and it paid off, Marenchin added.

Students dropped their art at Sobeys due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the work will eventually be turned over to Richmond Terrace Long-Term Care Home. Martin stated it also fits in well with Stella Maris’ motto which is “Do What You Can, When You Can, Because You Can.” Marenchin added they give special thanks to Sobeys and to all the young artists. Martin said she has been in contact with Richmond Terrace executive director Laura Scott and will be making the donation of the artwork to her and her staff.

Local couple donates $5,000 to Amherstburg Community Services Giving back is what it is all about, says Marg and Roger Prince. Marg was born and raised in Malden Township and when her and her husband Roger, were looking to downsize and retire, Amherstburg immediately came to mind. "We absolutely love it here,” said both Marg and Roger. Having always been involved in Rotary and other charities, they were looking for a way to give back to their community and through the Amherstburg Rotary Club – in which Marg is a member - they heard about Amherstburg Community Services (ACS), their programs and services. "We were quite surprised by how much this organization does" and that they serve four local communities. When they read in the River Town Times that developer Michael Dunn donated $10,000 and
challenged the community to donate and he would match up to another $10,000, they "said it was just the perfect time to give back.” Their $5,000 donation will be shared equally between Meals on Wheels and the Amherstburg Food Bank. Marg has been a Rotarian for 25 years, board member and president of Community Living Essex County, Crime Stoppers board member and a member of Access in Kingsville. Marg believes in the Rotary motto - “Service above Self,” stating they care about one another and that “we all can give of ourselves and our time is priceless to share." Roger currently volunteers at the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association. ACS executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo said she is "overwhelmed by the support of the community.” This donation will allow both programs to continue, as well as, expand, as the need in the community is constantly evolving.

Roundtable held with non-profits to discuss what to do during pandemic By Ron Giofu Councillor Patricia Simone held another in her series of roundtable discussions with non-profit agencies, the latest being a virtual get-together. The meeting, held via Zoom earlier this month featured special guests Mayor Aldo DiCarlo and CAO John Miceli and what the plans are for re-opening the economy in Amherstburg. Information received included the plan being a phased one and dependant on advice and guidance from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU). Simone estimated there were roughly 15 people on the call in total including representatives from Amherstburg Community Services, Community Living Essex County, local churches, The House Youth Centre, the Rotary Club of Amherstburg and others. “I thought it went well,” said Simone. Simone said they received a breakdown on what the town is doing and how the organizations can assist. “They’ve been doing an awesome job so far,” Simone said of the local non-profit organizations. An issue facing the community is the State of Emergency, which was also declared for flooding of the town’s coastline and beaches. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a chance that people might have to evacuate their homes and the town will have to assist in them in cases of flooding. Simone said work continues on creating a database of all non-profit agencies in town and there is a need for a vulnerable person registry in Amherstburg so they can be contacted in case of an emergency or for a welfare check. During the call, the town reportedly offered its assistance to aid non-profits, service clubs and churches in securing and purchasing proper PPE, assistance with accessing the federal grants available to non-profits who have suffered income loss due to cancellation of fundraisers and cancellation, and with providing qualified staff/consultants to assist each business, service club and church in town to assess their facilities and provide guidance for protocols required to re-open safely when the time comes for each phase. The town also offered to help with YouTube videos so that the non-profit organizations can film videos to educate others in the community on what they do and what they offer. “I think there was a lot of discussion and a lot of collaboration on how to help service clubs,” said Simone. Simone said she started receiving e-mails from

That is how the Zoom call was originated. “It’s just great to see everyone working together during these difficult times,” said Simone.
