Election 2019 Question & Answer
Audrey Festergya (Liberal) What is your stance on how affordable life is for residents in the riding and what would you and your party do in the future so that residents get the services they need at a price they can afford? The Liberal plan to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class is working. It helped create one million – mostly full-time – new jobs and brought the unemployment rate to a 40-year low. Still, many Canadians struggle with the high cost of living. We’ve already cut taxes for nine of 10 families – they’re now $2,000 better off than before – and lifted 23,000 kids in Essex out of poverty through the Canada Child Benefit. If elected, we’ll boost this benefit by $1,000 for families with children under the age of one, and make the first $15,000 you earn tax-free. We will increase old age security by 10%, double child disability benefits, and work with telecom companies to lower wireless services prices. We launched the new First-Time Home Buyer Incentive to help families lower their mortgage payments without increasing their down payment, and if elected we will fully implement this program, providing up to 10% off the purchase price of your first home. What specific measures could the people of Essex look forward to from your party with regards to combatting climate change and the issues associated with it?
www.rivertowntimes.com
I support the local Environment Committee’s leadership in declaring a local climate emergency. We only get one planet, and one Canada. Let’s protect it, for our kids and grandkids to enjoy. We will ensure that people and businesses in our riding have support for the effects of climate change that are out of their control. We launched and will expand the Disaster Mitigation Fund, to help communities better withstand current and future risks of natural hazards. If elected there will be new national flood insurance and income replacement programs. There are rebates and interest-free loans to help with the cost of retrofitting homes, and we’ll invest in skills training to make sure there are enough qualified workers to help get the work done. We’re committed to reducing single use plastics, and we’re putting a price on pollution while offering rebates to everyday Canadians. We’ll set legallybinding milestones to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, plant two billion trees over 10 years, and cut corporate taxes in half for companies that develop zeroemissions tech/products. Agriculture is a major industry in this area. What would you and your party do to benefit our local farmers? We need to do everything we can

to support our agri-food and wine industries. It’s good for jobs and it’s good for our export-based local economy. We secured a new NAFTA trade deal which protects agricultural jobs and safeguards $2 billion in cross-border trade. This trade deal creates certainty for local businesses and workers. We’re providing supports to supply managed farmers, to offset changes related to the European and Asian trade deals and we will continue to defend supply management. We are restoring risk management programs cut by the previous Conservative government. We also merged several agencies into Farm Credit Canada to create a single point of service and increased its capital lending capability up to $5 billion/year. The Liberal government is also investing in opportunities for innovation for our local agri-foods sector. Greenhouse operations are large-scale carbon sinks – their plants eat carbon for breakfast - which does a lot to help with climate change and they should be better recognized for it in our cap and trade system.
Plan survivor benefit by 25%, and we’ve increased the federal tax exemption to $15,000 helping reduce taxes for seniors. We will also implement Universal Pharmacare so all Canadians have drug coverage they need at an affordable price. To help combat elder abuse, an elected Liberal government will move forward with a national legal definition, invest in better data collection and law enforcement and establish new penalties in the Criminal Code. People are feeling the effects of the Ontario Ford Government’s cuts in schools and hospitals. Do you want to see the same thing happen with an Andrew Scheer government?
How would you describe the state of the economy and what would you and your party do to either build on it or make changes to it (or both)? We’ve made incredible progress – our economy is the strongest it’s been in 40 years. The Liberals have lowered taxes for most Canadians – you do have more money in your pocket than four years ago. We’ve doubled the 2019 gas tax fund and transferred unspent monies to municipalities to support local infrastructure priorities and local jobs. We’ve invested $70 million in local auto projects, like securing 500 jobs at the Ford Engine Plant. We’ve secured trade deals that protect auto jobs and give Canada access to 1.5 With an aging population, what will billion global consumers. Locally we’ve you and your party do for the people of invested in women entrepreneurs, $5 Essex to ensure they can age gracefully million in funding to support innovation and have a high quality of life? and projects in agri-food, mobility In our 2019 budget we invested technology and global trade - which in affordable housing, home care, creates the high paying jobs we need accessibility and we’re putting up to to diversify our economy, training to $729 more in the pockets of Canadians up-skill mid-career workers in the auto each year once they turn 75. Election 2019 Question & Answer
Bill Capes (PPC)
What is your stance on how affordable life is for residents in the riding and what would you and your party do in the future so that residents get the services they need at a price they can afford? Affordability is a growing concern in the Essex riding. We will lower the price of staple foods by ending the current supply management system, balance the budget in the first two years then lower business and farm taxes from 15% to 10%, lower personal tax to 15% on income of $15,001 to $100,000 and 25% on income higher than $100,000. Capital gains tax will be phased out from the current 50% until eliminated over one mandate. We will fully fund healthcare and allow provinces to be fully responsible for how care is delivered as mandated in the Canadian Constitution. This will allow for innovative management solutions of the services they are mandated to deliver and be accountable to the voters that elect their provincial representatives. What specific measures could the people of Essex look forward to from your party with regards to combatting climate change and the issues associated with it? We agree the climate is changing, always has and always will. We do not agree with the rhetoric that there is a “climate emergency” that is often used as a bludgeon to force social change. We do fully support environmental sustainability and climate impact mitigation efforts. Further I will support research and implementation of innovative programs for water management, erosion, carbon sequestration known as Ecological Goods and Services and improvements in this area will make our region more resilient to extreme weather events and mitigate runoff contributions to algae bloom problems that are attributed to land management issues. Recycling and disposal of end of life cycle renewable energy hardware such as solar panels and the toxic waste danger they entail must be brought into our discussion for future energy discussions. Agriculture is a major industry in this area. What would you and your party do to benefit our local farmers? Agriculture is a driving economic force in our riding but it is only one sector that will benefit from modernizing the rural infrastructure that has been overlooked for far too long. Rural road safety, natural gas and broadband internet are basic needs for our farms. Options to get more diversified crop rotations to markets that are currently not financially viable should also be discussed as climate impacts across the county dictate the need for more flexibility for farm management. Better planning for a rural rebirth would also help keep our families on the farm, bring more and less expensive housing solutions to towns like Harrow that has a strong business presence but employees can’t live where they work, schools close and small business opportunities slowly fade as the population moves to areas with modern infrastructure. Investment into our rural areas will diversify our entire economy and make life better for all concerned. With an aging population, what will you and your party do for the people of Essex to ensure they can age gracefully and have a high quality of life? The People’s Party believes you should keep more of what you have and pay less for what you need. Elimination of the carbon tax will lower the cost of utilities, fuel for your vehicles and most anything we spend our money on. The elimination of capital gains
tax will help many seniors keep more of their savings. Lower income tax rates and higher earnings threshold will help all seniors and for our lowest income seniors, the first $15,000 in earnings will not be taxed at all. Elimination of supply management will make food more affordable. The CRTC will be eliminated and competition will lower costs for internet and phone services. Increasing pensions while increasing the cost of everything we buy is no help at all, we will make sure that everything is affordable.

Election 2019 Question & Answer
Bill Capes (PPC)
Continued on Page 3 How would you describe the state of the economy and what would you and your party do to either build on it or make changes to it (or both)? The economy is problematic. Lack of stability and clarity of the message for the future from our government is causing stagnation of foreign investment, risk is just too high and there are many options available with our trade competitors. We will withdraw from the Paris Accord and eliminate the trade disadvantage the carbon costing imposes today and build
the pipelines our economy desperately needs. We will phase out the supply management system and eliminate interprovincial trade barriers that cost us $85 billion per year in lost economic potential. We will repair the damaged trade relations that have devastated our export markets and open free trade relations with anyone that respects fair trade that works for Canada. Investments in R&D, innovative processes, technology, machinery and equipment are critical to improvements in productivity and the higher living standards that follow. In the context that there are manpower shortages in many sectors, investment can increase production through efficiency without the need for more workers and make our sectors more competitive.

Election 2019 Question & Answer
Chris Lewis (Conservative)
What is your stance on how affordable life is for residents in the riding and what would you and your party do in the future so that residents get the services they need at a price they can afford? My team and I have knocked on over 34,000 doors since March of this year. Affordability is the number one issue that I am hearing, from every segment of our population, seniors, families, small businesses, students. People are making ends meet but want to do more than just get by. Life under the Liberals has become more expensive and the cost of the NDP plan will make costs rise, even more. A Conservative government will help Canadians get ahead by: removing the GST from home heating; providing a universal tax cut for the lowest tax bracket that will save the average couple $850 in taxes each year; we will lower everyday costs for groceries and gas by scrapping the carbon tax; while the other parties will raise your taxes, we will control them; the borrowing and increasing interest payments need to stop. We will respect the taxpayers money. What specific measures could the people of Essex look forward to from your party with regards to combatting climate change and the issues associated with it? Andrew Scheer has presented a real plan to protect our environment. The full details of this plan can be found at https://arealplan.ca/ Here are a few of the highlights: Review and modernize air quality standards and regulations, with a focus on urban airsheds; Work with provinces and municipalities to bring an end to raw sewage dumps into marine or freshwater ecosystems; Maintain support for watershed protection in significant watersheds, including the Great Lakes; Restore funding for the community-led National Wetland Conservation Fund (NWCF); Create a new fund for community-based projects targeted to wildlife enhancement; Maintain the community-led Habitat Stewardship Program for Species at Risk. These new policies will further lower Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen environmental protections – without taking money
out of Canadians’ pockets. This plan is Canada’s best chance to meet the Paris targets, without a carbon tax. Agriculture is a major industry in this area. What would you and your party do to benefit our local farmers? Justin Trudeau’s failure to ensure stable export markets for Canada’s agriculture sector, the Liberal Carbon Tax, and over-regulation have significantly hurt Canada’s farmers. It is clear that Canadian farmers are paying the price for the Liberal government’s mistakes at home, and abroad. Conservatives will continue to stand up for Canada’s agriculture sector and put forward policies that help farmers. Conservatives have a proud history of standing up for our farmers and ensuring that their priorities are our priorities. A new Conservative government will work collaboratively with the Ontario government to ensure that federal-provincial risk management programs work well for farmers. With an aging population, what will you and your party do for the people of Essex to ensure they can age gracefully and have a high quality of life? A Conservative Government will boost the Seniors' age credit by $1,000; lower income taxes on pensions; remove the GST from Home Energy bills; scrap the carbon tax that have made the cost of everyday life less affordable How would you describe the state of the economy and what would you and your party do to either build on it or make changes to it (or both)? Our economy is in a precarious state. The debt continues to rise and the interest on that is exorbitant. We cannot spend our way into prosperity, but the Liberal government has acted as if we can. Future generations are being left with a burden that will be difficult to get out from under, unless we stop it now. An Andrew Scheer government will lower taxes, cut red tape for Canadian businesses and help Canadians get ahead. We will ensure that any new spending, not already budgeted, must be paid for from savings within the government; not make changes to the Canada Child Benefit, seniors' benefits or transfers to provinces; put a swift end to Trudeau's corporate handouts; repair relationships with key trading partners and cut red tape and reduce costs of starting a business.

transnational e-commerce companies doing business in Canada, eliminate fossil fuel subsidies, increase tax for commercial bank profits (over $43 billion in profits in 2018). These measures, along with others, would make it possible to offer Canadians a Guaranteed Livable Income, a nationally-funded pharmaceutical program and eliminate tuition debt. What specific measures could the people of Essex look forward to from your party with regards to combatting climate change and the issues associated with it? On a national level, the Green Party would strengthen the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and set legal emissions limits for industries which would decrease over time. We would also maintain a carbon fee on all sources of carbon dioxide pollution. Revenues from the carbon fee would go back to Canadians as a dividend. We would move to a fully-renewable and non-polluting energy system. Under a Green government, no new pipelines would be approved which is something no other party has agreed to. Our commitment to the environment would ensure the protection of our fresh water resources and oceans. Agriculture is a major industry in this area. What would you and your party do to benefit our local farmers? Offer research and support to farmers to help them move from industrial agriculture to regenerative agriculture, which will not only save farmers money, it 10:52 will AM greatly reduce the negative effects industrial

farming has on our land and climate. We will offer a large investment in agricultural apprenticeships to help new farmers get started. We will also protect the rights of farmers to save their own seeds and replace one third of Canada’s food imports with domestic production. With an aging population, what will you and your party do for the people of Essex to ensure they can age gracefully and have a high quality of life? Establish a National Housing Strategy to address the need for safe and affordable housing. Over time, the Green Party would increase the Canada Pension Plan’s target income replacement rate from 25 to 50 percent of income received during working years. We would protect private pensions from company bankruptcy by amending the Bankrupcy and Insolvency Act and Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Provide the supports necessary to allow seniors to stay in their own homes as long as possible. We would also create more long-term care beds in local facilities. How would you describe the state of the economy and what would you and your party do to either build on it or make changes to it (or both)? Unemployment is currently statistically low; however, there are far too many Canadians working temporary or part-time jobs. Many of the Canadians, who are working full-time jobs, work in insecure industries. The Green Party would create new sustainable jobs and offer the education and training for workers to transition to them. The Green Party would improve international relations in order to create fair and sustainable trade agreements.

Election 2019 Question & Answer
Tracey Ramsey What is your stance on how affordable life is for residents in the riding and what would you and your party do in the future so that residents get the services they need at a price they can afford? Across the country, people are having a harder and harder time keeping up. They keep hearing about the economy doing well for the rich, but they’re not seeing the benefits for their families. Decades of Liberal and Conservative governments have stripped away public services and made it impossible to live a good life. The NDP will expand medicare to provide prescription drugs and dental care. Lower family bills. Make housing, child care, internet and cell phone services affordable. Act now to cut climate pollution, defend our land and water, and create 300,000 good jobs in a clean economy. What specific measures could the people of Essex look forward to from your party with regards to combatting climate change and the issues associated with it? Canada is not even on track to meet the modest targets - let alone the stronger ones required to prevent dangerous climate change. A New Democrat government will declare a climate emergency and put in place ambitious, science-based greenhouse gas reductions targets that
(NDP)
will help stabilize the global temperature rise to 1.5C. We’ll put these targets in legislation and ensure accountability by creating an independent Climate Accountability Office to do regular audits of progress on climate goals. Our climate plan is a jobs plan, supporting innovation in the green economy and retrofitting homes and buildings. We would immediately end fossil fuel subsidies to the biggest polluters. Agriculture is a major industry in this area. What would you and your party do to benefit our local farmers? Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, an incredible source of pride for our communities, and a high-tech industry that depends on a talented and skilled workforce. It supports thousands of families. It keeps our rural communities strong. And it produces the fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, eggs, and meat that Canadian families count on. New Democrats have a plan for a Canadian Food Strategy that will take a whole-of-government approach to address regional needs and priorities by investing in our agricultural communities, supporting young and

new farmers, and taking steps to ensure that rural livelihoods are good and sustainable. We will fully protect supply management, modernize communications structure in rural communities, eliminate the farm transfer tax for families, invest in public agricultural research and data collection, and introduce a payment protection program for produce growers. With an aging population, what will you and your party do for the people of Essex to ensure they can age gracefully and have a high quality of life? Everyone deserves to be able to age well, and live in dignity as a valued member of their community. But years of Conservative cuts and Liberal inaction are making it harder for seniors to get by. We need to make better choices to be ready to meet their needs. The NDP will lead a National Seniors Strategy, with the provinces and territories, to make seniors' health care a priority, reduce isolation, and tackle seniors’ poverty. This will include a funded national dementia strategy and an elder abuse prevention plan developed with seniors. Our national pharmacare and dental care plans will provide prescription medicine to all seniors as well as dental coverage, saving seniors hundreds of
dollars every year. We’ll enhance Old Age Security, boost the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and strengthen the Canada Pension Plan along with pension protections for private pensions, which will improve retirement security for all Canadians. How would you describe the state of the economy and what would you and your party do to either build on it or make changes to it (or both)? The working life in today’s economy keeps getting harder for Canadians. People, especially young people, are struggling to find secure, full-time jobs with benefits. Instead, they’re juggling part-time jobs and struggling to make ends meet. The growth of low-paid, insecure work is the result of decades of decisions by Liberal and Conservative governments – from scrapping the federal minimum wage in the 1990s to telling Canadians to “get used to” short-term, precarious work. New Democrats know that good jobs that treat people fairly make a real difference to Canadians. We’re committed to making sure that hardworking people get the fair wages and working conditions they deserve, while respecting collective agreements. This includes a better deal for all with a manufacturing and automotive strategy, more accessible job training, life long learning, strong supports for small businesses to drive our economy forward, and the creation of 300,000 good jobs through our climate plan.

Local restaurant makes moves to “go green” By Jonathan Martin
Gilligan’s Amherstburg location is working to go green. Restaurant owner Dave Hayes started making the move from plastic bags, plastic cups and polystyrene foam takeout boxes to paper and cardboard last week. Around 83 per cent of Ontario businesses’ waste ends up in landfills, a 2019 report from Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks reads. The provincial government plans to phase in an extended producer responsibility (EPR) model beginning in 2020, which will make waste-producing businesses responsible for managing and paying for the full lifecycle of their products. By 2021, all single-use plastics will be banned. “Eventually, everybody’s going to have to make the switch,” Hayes said. “Many of my staff and a few of my customers are very environmentally-conscious so they inspired me to get moving on it early.”

Chloe DiPasquale (right) hands a paper bag filled with Gilligans’ new, recyclable takeout containers to Brad Sanger in Amherstburg last Saturday. Gilligans’ Amherstburg location made the transition ahead of a government-mandated switch, which will start phasing in next year. There’s a higher up-front cost to using recyclable materials but there are ways to reduce the products’ overhead, said Hayes. “We’re using metal cups for dips and dressings, which will probably last a year or so. When we were using the disposable ones, we’d go through boxes and boxes of them,” he explained. By transitioning to reusable materials, Canadians can reduce an $11.1 billion value loss from unrecovered plastics to $1.4 billion by 2030, a 2019 study by Deloitte and Cheminfo Services Inc. reports. “We have a responsibility to work with our partners
to reduce plastic pollution, protect the environment, and create jobs and grow our economy,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a June 10 statement. “We owe it to our kids to keep the environment clean and safe for generations to come.” For his part, Hayes said his business’ transition is going well. “The customers are responding positively, my staff is happy and the takeout boxes are of a higher quality,” he said. “With the new material, there’s no condensation. No more soggy fries!”

Two new businesses open at same location on Murray St. By Jonathan Martin
Two new businesses have thundered onto Murray Street. Don’t Blink Studio and Jaglan’s Thunderdome, which provide portraiture services and sell hobby items respectively, now share a storefront at 64 Murray Street in Amherstburg. Barbara Riddell takes the photos while her son, Sean Riddell, sells comic books and sports memorabilia with his son, Jagger. “My mom and I started talking about this about a year ago,” Sean said. “We’ve really only been working hard on opening the past few months, though.” The family got to taste the fruits of their monthslong labour last weekend when they held their grand opening. Patrons milled about the businesses’ space, browsing the single-issue comics and graphic novels, many of which are signed by their writers and artists. Others meandered toward the autographed jerseys or inspected the studio’s backdrop. “For a few years now, me and the kids have been into the whole comic book world,” said Sean. “It started when my son started watching Big Bang Theory. They like comics in that show, so Jagger asked me if he could buy some. It was just a way for me to spend time with my son at first, but now I’m really into it.” Barbara said she started taking photography classes around 10 years ago, though she had always loved snapping shots of her kids. In her new studio space, she said she’s excited to capture some corporate headshots, engagement photos, family portraits and take on maternity shoots. “We’ll do cosplay shoots too!” Jagger piped in. Jagger has taken a leading role in the business, Sean said. In fact, Jaglan’s Thunderdome is named after the high school student, along with his 13-year-old sister, Rylan.

(From Left) Rylan Riddell, Sean Riddell, Jagger Riddell and Barbara Riddell pose for a photo in their new shared-space Murray St. businesses in Amherstburg. Jaglan’s Thunderdome sells comics and sports collectibles while Don’t Blink Studio produces photographic portraits. “Running the place is a good way for him to get some work experience for a few hours each week when he’s not in school,” Sean said. Jaglan designed many of the logos, banners and
posters hanging around the store, too. “I really like graphic design,” he said. Being surrounded each day with books full of graphic art, it seems that he’s in the right business.
Justin Trudeau has let Canadians down. He didn’t turn out to be who he promised and spent the last 4 years breaking promises to Canadians. Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives are no better. They would bring Doug Ford’s backwards politics to Ottawa. In Essex, you can choose to re-elect a fighter who is always on your side.
Tracey has worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of Essex and she’s running again to continue fighting for you.

Admirals win on the road, lose at home on the weekend By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Admirals won a big road game Saturday but couldn't keep the momentum Sunday. The Admirals were in Mooretown Saturday night to battle a Flags team that won its first eight games of the season and came away with a 4-2 win. Cody Schneider had two goals for Amherstburg, the second being into an empty net, while Kyle Meloche and Mitchell Demelo scored a shorthanded and powerplay goal respectively. One night later, the Admirals returned home and while they battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game on powerplay goals from Max Clifford and Bryce McGregor, things got away from them in the third period en route to a 6-2 loss. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak. Essex was two-for-eight on the
powerplay while Amherstburg was two-for-four. “(Saturday night) I thought we did a really good job in a tough barn,” said Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon after Sunday's game. “I didn't think we had our legs tonight. I don't think we had that extra gear to find the puck.” Bortignon wasn't happy with the officiating Sunday, but believed the Admirals were the better team in the first period and parts of the second period. Of the seven goals allowed while goalie Nick Bolton was in net (the sixth against Essex was an empty net goal), the Admirals didn't do a good enough job tying up opposition players, their coach believed. “I don't think our defense did a good enough job tying up sticks in front of the net,” he said. “(Bolton) did a good job of making the first save, our defence didn't do a good enough job cleaning up the

game. “That was a disappointing game,” stated General Amherst head coach Dom Silvaggio. “To give up 21 points in the fourth quarter was unacceptable.” Silvaggio pointed out they allowed 25 points in the first three quarters and 21 in the final quarter alone. “I was disappointed in their ball movement,” he added. “They were passing it to players on the other team.” The Lady Gens also stepped out of bounds six times during the game, he said, and didn’t spread out enough. “It’s almost like they froze,” he said. The Lady Gens did do some good things, Silvaggio stated, including hitting open shots and playing good defense for the first three quarters. They quit playing aggressive defense after that, he stated. Bulldogs suffer first loss of the season, losing 8-1 at Cardinal Carter
“When we got here, our offensive line couldn't handle their pressure from their defense,” said Rudak. “Some of our receivers were not running the correct routes.” That made calling some plays difficult, he said. “(Cardinal Carter) got a spark with that touchdown,” he added. “Everything
they got today they deserved.” The Bulldogs play their next two games at home at the Libro Centre. They host the Holy Names Knights this Thursday at 5 p.m. and then the Brennan Cardinals Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. General Amherst closes the season Nov. 1 with a 7 p.m. game at Sandwich.

Emmitt Rosati (7) heads upfield as a Cardinal Carter defender tries to bring him down during last Thursday afternoon’s WECSSAA football game. The Cougars defeated the General Amherst Bulldogs 8-1. By Ron Giofu It was a tough day for the General Amherst Bulldogs last Thursday. The Bulldogs were at Cardinal Carter and didn't muster much in the way of offence en route to losing their first game of the season. The host Cougars trailed 1-0 at the half but a 27-yard touchdown pass with convert and a single point of their own in the third quarter was enough to give them an 8-1 win. The Bulldogs' record is now 2-1 on the 2019 WECSSAA Tier 1 West football season. Cardinal Carter improved to 1-3. Emmitt Rosati, who had two
interceptions on defense in addition to quarterbacking the Bulldogs, said they came out against a team they thought they should have beaten but couldn't get their offence going. He said they need to pick up first downs and have a sustainable offence going forward. Rosati thinks the loss may serve as inspiration for his team going forward. “I think the loss will help us out,” he said. “We actually have to work hard and show up ready to play.” Head coach John Rudak said the Bulldogs ran everything with precision before the game but couldn't get things going during the game.

Amherstburg Community Foundation recognizes local businesses that donated
By Ron Giofu A pair of local businesses were recognized by the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) for contributing to the foundation’s causes. Rivertown Family Dental and Mariner’s Rescue bed and breakfast were awarded certificates by ACF board members. ACF director Linden Crain made the presentation at Rivertown Dental to Dr. Sean Sinasac, the latter stating it was Crain who reached out and made the initial contact. “I think this group leading the foundation is solid,” said Sinasac. “I like their initiatives. A group like this in our community deserves our support.” The donation from Rivertown Dental will be over three years but the exact amount was not disclosed. Sinasac said that businesses regularly get approached for donations and, after due diligence, they decided the ACF was “a good group of people that are going to do something good.” He added they are interested in seeing the community grow. Crain said he has been a patient at Rivertown Dental for approximately ten years and has developed a relationship with Sinasac. He believed some of the initiatives, including the single-track cycling trail at Holiday Beach Conservation Area and the Amherstburg library refresh, were up Sinasac’s alley and approached him. “I pretty much reached out to him and gave him a cold call. I explained the foundation’s four initiatives (which also includes a mentorship and speaker series at the Amherstburg Freedom Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) director Linden Crain (left) presents a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Sean Sinasac. Museum and upgrades to Beaudoin Park in River Canard) and he took it from there.” Crain added the ACF wants more youth to get involved and while they may not have the funds at this stage of their lives, youth can still provide a powerful force and encourage people to get involved. “I think it’s important youth in schools are aware of the foundation,” he said. Mariner’s Rescue owners Lauri, John and son Kaine Brouyette said they purchased the home at 223 Dalhousie St., the former Jewellery by Design location, with the intent of converting it into a luxury vacation home. “Who doesn’t love Dalhousie St.?” asked Lauri. Now that the air B&B is running, they decided to give back. They went to the Gil Penelosa presentation and were inspired to make a donation. That too was undisclosed. “We were sold about all the things that we could do to bring the community together,” she said. Kaine still lives in Amherstburg while John and Lauri plan to move back after John retires. They contacted ACF director Lori Wightman about making a donation and Wightman said she was happy to help. “The ACF is obviously looking to get buy-in from the community and residents,” said Wightman. “We want to work together to make the community an even better place.” For more information on the Amherstburg Community Foundation or to donate, visit www.amherstburgfoundation. org.

decided to give it a shot,” said Reiner. Reiner said it was a partnership with the Amherstburg Library and they hope to do more. “We’re trying to partner with the library on more projects,” she said. “I felt that the Amherstburg library space was very conducive to the talk, allowing close interaction with attendees and easy
viewing of the related on-screen images. The audience seemed very engaged with the story of the Reno Gang in Windsor, and I had many insightful questions asked after the talk. This is the second telling of the story that I have given, with the first happening in Sandwich Town in May,” said Beharriell.

The Marsh Historical Collection teamed with the Amherstburg Library to host a guest speaker last week. And, if things go according to plan, there could be more. St. Clair College professor Chad Beharriell spoke to a group of about 20 people at the Amherstburg Library last Thursday evening on the topic of “Into Canadian Arms – The Reno Gang in Windsor (1868).” Meg Reiner, archives co-ordinator at the Marsh Historical Collection, said she saw Beharriell speak in Windsor and decided to ask him to bring the talk to Amherstburg. “It’s nice to be able to host a regional history talk,” she said. Reiner said they also wanted to gauge the interest of the community prepare e for and possibly host more talks. If the Marsh Historical Collection can find speakers on local topics willing to come out, more evenings like last Thursday will be presented. “Chad asked if there urance or would be interest in Amherstburg and we

Davidson said she wants to give back to the community and she is now a second generation Rotarian, as her father also was in the club. “I really like the part of being a part of a bigger family and giving back to the community,” said Davidson. Having fun while being a Rotarian is also something she looks forward to. “It is fun,” said Davidson. Davidson said she volunteered at the Rotary Club-sponsored Montreal Canadiens Alumni hockey game last December and she had a good time doing that. “That was my first taste

Just like tonight, we added Karen.” There are new clubs being created in the district, including a new
Rotary Club in Kingsville, and Chambers said that brings District 6400’s total to 52. “Our district is pretty open and doing a variety of things,” said Chambers. “Keep active. The more active you are, the better you are.” Chambers also awarded two “Do The Right Thing” certificates, with that being this year’s motto for District 6400. He recognized Hazen Price and Susanne Bergeron for their ongoing efforts. “We do not say thank you enough to our own Rotarians,” said Chambers. “I challenge you to do that.”

Our Place Ladies Fashions th celebrating its 30 anniversary
COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, October 16, 2019 - 23
Dalhousie St. business owned by Shirley Wigle and Lori Farmer By Jonathan Martin From Oct. 17-20, Our Place Ladies’ Fashions will celebrate having kept Amherstburg well-dressed for 30 years. The Dalhousie Street business started selling women’s clothing, sizes 6-20 plus regular and petite, in 1989 but expanded to include antiques, gifts, and home and garden décor in 2017. To celebrate, the mother-daughter business team, Shirley Wigle and Lori Farmer, plan to hold a storewide sale. Every purchase will come with a gift, they said. Customers will also have a chance to win an outfit from Montreal fashion designer Frank Lyman, along with other prizes. Though 85 per cent of the business’ fashions are made in Canada, Wigle and Farmer said they also carry European
fabrics and designs. The fabrics aren’t the only things that come from far away. Over Our Place’s three decades of business, Farmer said she and her mother have had the opportunity to meet fashion-conscious travellers from all walks of life. “The best part of this business is the people I’ve gotten to meet and the friends I’ve made,” she said. Those people’s relationships have allowed her to keep working with her mother all these years, she added. Amherstburg Library hosts guest speaker Continued from Page 21 “In my view, there is a ‘local thirst’ for community-based history and there are some amazing stories to share in this region, of which the Reno Gang's arrest and extradition from Windsor is just one. In terms of the Reno Gang in our area, attendees are often quite struck by both the individuals involved (first successful U.S. train robbing gang, founder of the Pinkerton detective agency) and the scope of the extradition
trial (i.e. involving the national governments of Canada, the U.S., and Great Britain).” Beharriell added he thanks the Marsh Collection and the Essex County Library system for their support in facilitating talk.
