Essex County in the War of 1812 observed at Fort Malden By Ron Giofu
Around 70 re-enactors got the 1812 experience at Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada last weekend as they braved the rainy weather in their period campsites and prepared for battle. Friday’s late-night downpour toppled tents, tore flies and kept organizer Vicky Beaulieu awake all night, she said. “It’s all worth it, though,” Beaulieu said. “This is a really excellent hands-on experience or the kids.” The Maidstone Historical Society has held a war of 1812 re-enactment each year for the past 13 years. This year, the soldiers set up camp on Fort Malden’s grounds as part of the “Essex County in the War of 1812” event. They allowed local students to pick up wooden muskets, with the guidance of Fort Malden Interpretation Coordinator Alex Dale, to defend the Fort during a schools-only education day on Friday. “What an amazing idea!” Beaulieu exclaimed. “It gave the students a way to interact with their history. A favourite moment of mine was seeing a little boy scream, ‘Go away! We don’t want a war!’ as his enemies crested a bastion with a massive schooner in the background.” LaSalle’s Craig Morrison skirted the shores in his schooner as the Provincial Marine and Maidstone’s re-enactors fired on the vessel, while the students

battled in another section of the park. On Saturday, the general public was welcomed into the Fort to walk through six different encampments. While exploring, they could listen to period music, see the weapons used at the time and listen to interpreters recount Essex County’s military history. “It was especially important for us to get the Métis involved in this event,” Beaulieu said. “They had a massive presence here at the time since they were trying to protect their fur interests. They knew the waterways, they were able to get messages across the lines and they made up a large section of the militia.” A second battle was set to take place for public viewing Sunday, but the weekend’s ongoing rainy weather convinced the re-enactors to pack up early, Dale said. “I’m very excited to do this again next year,” Beaulieu said. “I think we’ll do it on this location again.”

Kevin Money, ERCA’s director of conservation services, points to a map of Holiday Beach Conservation Area during a brainstorming session with local cyclists recently. By Ron Giofu A group of local cyclists took a look at where their new single-track cycling trail could go at Holiday Beach Conservation Area. Representatives from the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) met with members of the local cycling community last Thursday evening at Holiday Beach where they went through areas where the trail could be built before heading back to the portable classroom inside the conservation area where they brainstormed ideas along with members of the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO) and the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF). Kevin Money, director of conservation services with ERCA, explained they are working with a number of “outdoor enthusiasts” to develop the single-track cycling trail. He said it is one of four projects that the ACF is working to fundraise for and that it is an opportunity to develop the site further. Money indicated that ERCA is using people and groups they are familiar with, with some of the people being engineers. “The whole goal is to brainstorm and come up with some ideas,” said Money. “It’s an opportunity to develop something for the community.” Development of the trail involves stakeholder groups like the HBMO as it is important that no birds, birders or any other types of habitat that are around the Holiday Beach property are disturbed. Money pointed out that Holiday Beach is actually a 500-acre site and that further amenities can be developed on the grounds. “We want to make sure what we do works with what they’re doing,” Money said, referring to the HBMO. Ideas during the brainstorming session included expanding the trail to as much as 10-kilometres to attract more cyclists and to continue to build on eco-tourism in the area. ERCA plans on creating a new wetland on the site and using fill from that to help create the trail. A number of trees that were knocked down during the recent storm could also be converted into material for the trail, indicated Danielle Stuebing, ERCA’s director of communications and outreach services. Additional meetings are planned with the cycling community and then a design will be created for the single-track trail through the site. Money said it is anticipated that construction could begin in next year. The Amherstburg Community Foundation is attempting to raise $75,000 for the project.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Local resident happy to be a member of the ATA Thursday, September 26, 2019 ushered in a milestone for the people of Amherstburg. The brand new Amherstburg Taxpayers Association ratified its constitution and is ready to proceed as a forum for all of the citizens of our community. Why do we need this kind of group? Because being a citizen means more than voting every four years and leaving the day-to-day business of the town to the mayor and council until the next election. In the same way that most people of faith acknowledge that more is required of them than once a week attendance at a worship service, responsible citizens realize that being a good citizen means keeping abreast of what’s happening and trying to be informed about how our community is running between elections so that we can make the best choices in the next election cycle. Opportunities to
do this have been few until the formation of the Amherstburg Taxpayers Association. I am very pleased to belong to this new group and I look forward to having discussions about all of the topics that interested residents want to bring up. I hope to learn about municipal finances and services. I want to hear the opinions of others, particularly those who have experiences that are different from mine. It is my hope that the Amherstburg Taxpayers Association will become a support for those we have elected. Watch for the location of the October meeting and come out to listen. If you decide to join, the annual membership cost of $10 is money well spent. —Denise Bondy Amherstburg

Festival of Hawks salvages second weekend thanks to ERCA staff and contractors
“The high lake levels and resulting beach erosion reduced our day use visitation by over 30 per cent over the summer months. But, as difficult as this situation is, we are very grateful there were no injuries or major infrastructure damages incurred as a result of the storm.” Andy Parsons, a member of the HBMO, said Saturday they were glad to be back but noted a southerly wind held down hawk counts as northerly winds usually are ideal. “We do better when there is a northern component to the wind,” RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU Parsons stated. In addition to the many downed trees that needed to be removed, there were many compromised large

Parsons added the HBMO is seeking donations and if people want to contribute, they can visit www.hbmo.ca. “We would be really happy if people would be interested in donating,” said Parsons.

Town to seek ways to keep Navy Yard Park fishing opportunities alive Town council receives report back on fishing area during silver bass season
By Ron Giofu Town council has received a report on closing off a portion of Navy Yard Park during silver bass fishing season and the results saw no significant increase for local business and a few problems.
However, the problems were not to the point where council wants to scrap the program entirely. Feedback has been made public by administration regarding the temporary fishing area that was established in Navy Yard Park from June 1-13. The

report from director of parks, facilities, recreation and culture Phil Roberts pointed out that administration was not in favour of amending the bylaw to expand the fishing area, but recognized council’s attempt to attract more tourists and to bolster the waterfront economy. Administration placed 300 feet of temporary fencing, doubled the rate of garbage pick-up with an additional receptacle, placed instructional and interpretive signage relating to fishing on the fence, placed a portable toilet at a fishing area entrance point, increased enforcement patrols with the help of the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment, informed and monitored fishing and park-related comments on social media, undertook a survey of fishing patrons for demographics and economic use and undertook another survey of core businesses for economic success. “The inclusion of fencing mitigated much of the risk of non-fishing and fishing park patrons’ interaction and potential exposure to sharp objects. Approximately six ‘stray’ hooks were found in bagged grass clippings collected by parks staff. It should be noted that visitors used the park for personal hygiene, urination and defecation,” said Roberts in his report. “These acts may pose a slight risk for the transmission of human pathogens to the public at large and must not be discounted. There is some risk of loss of public trust should the expanded fishing opportunity continue if regular park patrons are inconvenienced without significant return being realized.” Total cost of the pilot project was $2,774, with $1,017 being for fencing, though Roberts noted the town now owns fencing that could be used if such a project were to happen again. Other costs included the temporary toilet, signage, power washing of the railing and walkway, garbage and litter control

and a plumbing repair to unplug washroom facilities from fish waste. Roberts also reported the majority of fishing patrons were tourists, but believed the economic impact from the sport fishing tourists was “not significant” during that time frame. Councillor Don McArthur, who had made the motion to have a segregated area during the silver bass fishing season, admitted there were “mixed reviews” and that the report describes “curious behaviour” of those who came down to fish. “My understanding is this happens every year,” said McArthur. “How does this year compare to past years?” Roberts indicated the town doesn’t have the same situations outside of the silver bass season while director of planning, development and legislative services Mark Galvin indicated the problem was exacerbated this year due to the expanded area. McArthur added he was hopeful of a better economic impact and suggested shorter term events like fishing derbies and other events to allow families to fish and also get people to come downtown. He stated the town lacks public fishing spaces and called for the town to point out to the public where they can legally fish. Recalling the Bob Meloche Memorial Fishing Derby, McArthur also recalled the smiles on people’s faces as grandparents and parents got to fish with their children. “People want to fish and we have to give them the space to do it,” said McArthur. Councillor Michael Prue believed council had to act promptly so that people from Toronto don’t come down only to have the town pull the plug on fishing in the park. “If we’re going to do it, we should do it now,” said Prue. Town council resolved to have a report come back before them by March.

Save African Child Uganda goes back to the 60’s to help raise money for Ugandan children
Geri Sutts, Ingrid Silvaggio-Heugh, Elaine Johnson, Kathy Vriesen and Betty Westfall are among the steering committee that comprise Save African Child Uganda (SACU) in Canada. Absent are Rick Vriesen and Cheryl Rutgers. The group held a 1960’s themed murder mystery in River Canard recently. By Ron Giofu Save African Child Uganda (SACU) hosted a murder mystery fundraiser and had a groovy time in the process. SACU welcomed approximately 90 people to the Knights of Columbus Hall in River Canard for a 1960's-themed murder mystery entitled “Peace, Love and Murder” with the help of Michelle Mainwaring and a group of performers. The dinner and night of murder mystery fun and comedy raised $3,598 for SACU. Kathy Vriesen, who is part of the six-person SACU committee along with husband Rick, pointed out Geri Sutts got the organization going in 2010 with the help of Ivan Nsera, the latter being based in Uganda. Since then, the group has gathered money to build classrooms, bore holes and to feed children with about 177 students now enrolled in SACU schools. Many are now moving into high school and Ingrid Silvaggio Heugh said a friend of Nsera's in Uganda, a man named Iga Andrew, came to the rescue. SACU was having difficulty raising enough funds to pay to board students at the high school
they were travelling to, so Andrew invested in building a new high school next to the existing SACU elementary school. Instead of having to pay to board the students, they can now stay close to home and continue their education. “There's no expense for us at all,” said Silvaggio Heugh. “We were just floored by the big news.” Proceeds from the “Peace, Love and Murder” fundraiser will help improve the meals for the children in Uganda. SACU feeds the children
breakfast and lunch but hope to enhance that and bolster their diet even more with nutritional snacks. Sutts noted that SACU has come progressed a great deal since it was founded in 2010 with 45 children. “They've come a long way,” said Sutts. SACU currently has 15 teachers, playground equipment, a covered chapel, ten classrooms, electricity and a well for clean water. Andrew will help pay for teachers
for the high school, which is currently under construction. SACU is also aiming to get the children without a sponsor to be sponsored. For more information, visit www.sacuganda. org, visit them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/groups/ sacuganda or e-mail sacuganda2018@gmail. com. Other people on the SACU committee include Elaine Johnson, Betty Westfall and Cheryl Rutgers.

Impaired (by Drug) Arrest made in Amherstburg involving infant passenger The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment states an adult male is facing an impaired (by drug) driving charge after being stopped by officers after driving with an infant passenger in his vehicle. Windsor Police Service - Amherstburg Detachment patrol officers responded to a complaint of a suspected impaired driver last Wednesday evening just after 8 p.m. Police say a witness called 911 to report that a suspected impaired driver had been acting aggressively while making a purchase at a business located on Sandwich Street North. According to police, the male was then observed to enter and drive away in a motor vehicle with an infant passenger onboard. The witness then observed driving that was allegedly erratic and unsafe by the suspected driver and called 911 to report the incident. Minutes later officers located the suspect vehicle and stopped it in the area of Richmond St. and Boardwalk Ave. Officers confirmed the vehicle had one adult male driver and an infant passenger. Upon investigating the incident, officers detected signs of physical impairment with the driver but ruled out the involvement of alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle (conveyance) as he allegedly had previous consumption of drugs. He was transported to Windsor Police Service Headquarters and assessed by a drug recognition expert, where it is believed the suspect's ability to operate a motor vehicle had been impaired due to the previous consumption of drugs - including cannabis. A search of the involved vehicle revealed a number of items including a prohibited weapon and a small quantity of suspected cannabis, police allege. The infant was not injured and returned to a caregiver. The adult male is facing charges of impaired (by drug) operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a prohibited weapon, and driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available. The latter was a provincial offence notice that carries a $215 fine if convicted. The identity of the charged adult male is not being released to protect the identity of the infant passenger.

NDP candidate brings message of affordable housing to Amherstburg
Essex are spending over 30 per cent of their income on rent and utilities. “People can’t wait for help any more. New Democrats get it and we’ll choose to put people first right now with this rental benefit,” added Ramsey. Ramsey compared building new affordable housing units to the way 300,000 war time homes were constructed after World War II. quite yet. The Admirals hosted the Mooretown Flags Sunday night at the Libro Centre and fell 5-4 with Mooretown going

a perfect 4-for-4 on the powerplay. Amherstburg, on the other hand, went 0-for-5 including two late powerplays that could have possibly produced the tying goal. “That's it in a nutshell,” said Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon. Bortignon noted the play of Liam Kiewtiz, who scored his first two goals in an Admirals' uniform, Sunday night as well as Duncan Dagley, who also had his first Jr. C goal. Bryce McGregor also scored for Amherstburg on a nifty feed from Josh Talerico in the second period. Luca DiGiovanni and Mitchell Demelo were two first-year players that also stood out, the coach believed. “I told our guys we did a lot of good things tonight,” Bortignon stated, noting they outscored Mooretown 4-1 in five-on-five play. Amherstburg was without Cody Schneider, Christian McBride, Mitch MacPherson and Patrick Godin Sunday night, Bortignon pointed out, with Mooretown being a “veteran team on the other side.” While the Admirals failed to kill off a penalty Sunday night, their fortunes
were just the opposite last Friday night in a 7-2 win in Dresden. Amherstburg got out to a 6-0 lead and killed off all seven Dresden powerplays in the game en route to their first victory of the season. Schneider, DiGiovanni and Jaxon Boucher had their first Jr. C goals in that night. “When you look at the number of guys scoring their first goals, it shows you how young we are,” said Bortignon. The Admirals did a good job of executing offensively last Friday night and did a better job disrupting Dresden's forecheck in that game than they did against Mooretown Sunday night. Also scoring Friday night in Dresden were Josh Talerico, McGregor, Max Clifford and Broden Meloche. The next three games are on the road for the Admirals as they play in Petrolia Thursday night and in Blenheim next Sunday night. After heading to Mooretown for an Oct. 12 game, the Admirals return to the Libro Centre Oct. 13 versus the Essex 73's.

“Shakers” classic car club pays tribute to honourary member

By Ron Giofu An honourary member of a classic car club known as the “Shakers” passed away last Tuesday but not before the club could pay tribute to him. Members of the “Shakers” classic car club were at the home of Ron and Lynda Jones last Monday paying tribute to Ron, who was ill with leukemia. Ron Jones unfortunately passed away a day later.
GOD LOVES YOU
AND HAS PROVIDED FOR YOUR SALVATION THRU HIS SON JESUS CHRIST If you are not sure of your salvation I pray that you would stop right now and ask Jesus to come into your heart. Don't wait another minute. Here is an important prayer for you. Dear God: I thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to die for my sins and that I might be saved. I accept him now as my Lord and Saviour and I turn from my past life to a renewed life in you through him. You said in your Word that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God raised him from the dead I would be saved (Romans 10:9). I believe your Word; I believe I am now saved, Thank You Lord.
Now go on and live for God

to his home with their classic cars as a tribute to him. The tribute was organized by friends Larry McCormick and Russ Douglas. “Ron and I go back a long way,” explained McCormick. “We had the Shakers reunions twice a year. It was an old car club back from the ‘60’s.” McCormick said that Jones wasn’t an official member of the “Shakers,” but the club made him an honourary member. Jones was known for his 1955 and 1957 Chevys, and owned a 1957 truck and car when he died. “Everything was Chevys for him,” said McCormick.

Upon learning of Jones’ illness, the club gathered as many people as they could and went to his home where they were met by members of his family. The group not only celebrated his life with their cars, but also had a special toast to him. At Jones’ celebration of life last Sunday afternoon at The Fort Fun Centre, friends and family with classic cars were encouraged to bring them out as another way to pay tribute to him. Jones owned Ambassador Movers for over 50 years, was also an honourary member of the River Canard K of C and served as a volunteer firefighter with the Anderdon Fire Department for 12 years.

Lady Gens start WECSSAA senior girls basketball season with 1-1 record
from a long distance, he said, and the Lady Gens didn't do a good enough job guarding against that. The Lady Gens seemed tight against Kennedy, and Silvaggio hopes for a rematch in the WECSSAA “AA” finals. Lexi Dodds led the Lady Gens in scoring with 15 points with Abby Orchard drawing praise from her coach for her “unbelievable hustle.” Orchard is one of the smaller players on the team, he added, but she still works hard to get rebounds. In the win against Villanova, Silvaggio said they came out of the gate a lot quicker. “We came out ready to play,” he said. However, free throw shooting was poor in that game, as General Amherst only went 12-for-28 from the line. There was a point in the third quarter where the
Wildcats stormed back on took the lead but the Lady Gens were able to claw back and retake the lead. “The kids didn't fall apart. They played well,” he said. Dodds led the team with 14 points against Villanova while Brynlee Ammonite had 11 points and Dani Brindley scored ten points. The Lady Gens have a pair of home games this week against Holy Names (Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.) and St. Anne (Thursday at 4 p.m.) with Silvaggio stating the front end of the schedule is tough. “We're looking for improvement as the year goes on,” he said. General Amherst was also in the Western University tournament the previous weekend where they went 1-2. Silvaggio said they were in a tough bracket and while they didn't play their best in the first two games, they played a strong game and beat a tough team out of Kingston in their third game.

The General Amherst Lady Gens senior girls basketball season opened the 2019 WECSSAA regular season with a win and a loss. The Lady Gens' first game was a 50-45 home court win over the visiting Villanova Wildcats last Tuesday evening. They followed that up with a 67-32 loss last Thursday afternoon at Kennedy. Lady Gens head coach Dom Silvaggio said Kennedy is an OFSAA contender this year, but had hoped his team would have had a better showing against them nonetheless. “It was kind of disappointing, especially with the way we played the other night,” said Silvaggio. “The kids didn't play with the same intensity that they played with (against Villanova).” Kennedy has players that can hit three-point shots

team,” agreed Shanti Harrison. Sienna McLeod said they were far more nervous in their first game against Villanova. “We were all talking before the game about how nervous we were,” she said. “We did our best.” McLeod added they need to improve their shooting but “we can also keep working on our defense.” Dufour said they are getting better and gaining more confidence. “We hope to go back to the finals like last year,” added Dufour. Coach Greg Scott also noted they had the jitters versus the Wildcats. “They played super nervous against Villanova. For most of the team, it was their first game of high school
basketball.” Scott said they are “a fantastic group of girls to work with” and said they are working to give them the skills and confidence to get better. Parents and family members are very supportive as well, he added. “We take it game-by-game,” he said. “We're trying not to focus on the score and are working on the process of getting better.” All players are getting a chance to play right now, he said, in order to see what everyone can do. The Lady Gens hosted Holy Names Tuesday at 4 p.m. after this issue of the RTT went to press. They return to the home court Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game against St. Anne.

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens junior girls are still looking for their first win but they are also looking for continuous progress. The Lady Gens opened the year at home with a 60-21 loss to the Villanova Wildcats last Tuesday afternoon before hitting the road last Thursday evening where they dropped a 40-14 decision to
the Kennedy Clippers. Jennifer Dufour believed that her and her teammates did better against Kennedy than they did versus Villanova. “We definitely did better than the game before because we worked more as a team,” said Dufour. “We really helped each other out on offence and defense.” “We definitely played better as a

Uncommon Festival takes over Amherstburg Continued from Page 1 John Skerrett, a teacher from Simcoe, travelled to Amherstburg with his family and one of his students. He said he “just happened to find out about it online” and decided to make the trek to town. “We go to comic-cons and different steampunk events,” he said. “I just find the people interesting, very friendly.” Skerrett said they have fun at festivals like Amherstburg Uncommon and “we just find the people very genuine and very nice.” Russell Goddard came from Windsor and said he likes the “re-imagination of the steam age.” He noted he enjoys being creative and that included making his own costume. He noted he is a medieval re-enactor but “it's nice to relax and enjoy a festival rather than work at one.” Goddard got a chance to hold a Harris Hawk, brought to town by the group Kingsport. Kingsport performed falconry shows with falconer Trish
Morrison stating she enjoyed the event. “I like it because I get to dress up,” she said. Cassondra Jimmerfield of McGregor brought her children to the festival again this year and indicated it won't be the last time. “We love it,” said Jimmerfield. “We came last year and we definitely will be coming every year. My kids love dressing up.” Lori Grondin, Ben Grondin, Dmitri Sheffiel, Erienne Grondin and Chey Grondin all came together and the group, which came from Tecumseh and Windsor, also enjoyed themselves. “It's a fun, unique event that doesn't happen anywhere else,” said Chey. Lori added “it's fun for every age. It's for everyone.” For people who enjoy dressing up in Harry Potter and steampunk-inspired attire, this was their event. “Every year they have it, we'll be here,” said Lori.
