Lewis reclaims Essex riding for Conservatives
Essex MP-elect Chris Lewis gives a celebratory speech after learning he’s won his riding in the 2019 federal election. The Conservatives snatched Essex back from the NDP but lost the federal election to the Liberals. By Jonathan Martin Essex is Conservative once again. Chris Lewis snatched the reigns from New Democrat Tracey Ramsey, whose one term in office had upset the Conservative Party’s 11-year hold on the riding. As the ballot counts rolled through a gathering of Lewis’ supporters, the few dozen people present
alternated between applause and tense silence. For much of the night, Ramsey was hot on Lewis’ heels. In the end, though, Lewis walked away with a 4,394-ballot lead – and almost 41.5 per cent of the riding’s total votes. “I didn’t know what tonight was going to bring,” Lewis told his supporters after his win. “I really didn’t. I had prepared two speeches and I’m really glad I didn’t need the second one.
“Essex is once again blue.” Essex may be blue, but Canada, as a whole, remains red. The Liberals managed to scrounge up a minority government with 157 seats as of midnight, down from the 184 they won in 2015 and well below the 170 they’d need to govern with a majority. To pass legislation or to survive confidence votes, they’ll need to garner support from Canada’s other political parties. The third-place Bloc Québécois or the fourth-place New Democrats are safe bets. Either would provide the Liberals with enough votes to get things done. Lewis’ comrades in blue came in second place, as far as seats are concerned. They did earn the most ballots, however, with 34.6 per cent of the popular vote. That’s a full 1.7 per cent more than the Liberals. “People responded to our positive Conservative message,” Lewis said. “I’m exceptionally proud of our platform.” Tamra Walls-Muise, a grade four teacher at Essex Public School, said the message Lewis brought to her students and the way he presented it turned her into a supporter. “Chris (Lewis) came and spoke to my students and I was very impressed with him,” she said. “He answered all of their questions and all of my questions very clearly and gave very valid reasoning that made me think, ‘This is my guy.’” Walls-Muise’s “guy” could be seeking her support again sooner rather than later. In a minority government, the prime minister and his or her cabinet find themselves outnumbered. It’s easy for the other political parties to declare that they have no confidence in the sitting government, which usually triggers a new election. It’s happened six times before; most recently in 2011, when the federal Conservatives were found to be in contempt of Parliament. For now, though, Lewis said he’s excited to serve Essex. “Tonight, we celebrate,” he said. “Tomorrow, we roll up our sleeves.”

NDP’s Ramsey falls short in re-election bid against Conservative Lewis
RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU
NDP candidate Tracey Ramsey, joined by her husband Germaine, blows kisses to the crowd at Royal Canadian Legion Br. 594. Ramsey thanked supporters after losing to Conservative Chris Lewis in Monday night’s federal election. By Ron Giofu Admitting it wasn't the result they wanted, NDP candidate Tracey Ramsey was gracious Monday night after her re-election bid was unsuccessful. Ramsey, who was elected in 2015, lost to Conservative Chris Lewis Monday night with neither candidate's
party being successful nationally as the Liberals will form a minority government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. With 254 of 254 polls reporting Lewis had 28,126 votes to Ramsey's 23,350. Liberal candidate Audrey Festeryga had 12,840 votes. Jen Alderson, the Green Party candidate, got 2,139 votes while People's Party of Canada candidate Bill Capes finished fifth with 1,231 votes. Ramsey said she thought of her team when

she found out she lost, as she waited for results at her campaign office in Essex before coming to her election night party at Royal Canadian Legion Br. 594 in Tecumseh. She thanked her staff and supporters, telling them “we fought very, very hard.” “The past four years have been a gift,” she said, adding she got to know the riding well. “I don't know that this is the end.” Ramsey, who unseated Conservative Jeff Watson in 2015, congratulated Lewis and stated “I wish him all the best in dealing with all of the incredible people” in the riding. Noting she is on a leave of absence from her job at Ford Motor Company, she said she may return there or find something else. Noting the loss is “fairly fresh,” Ramsey said she still plans on being involved in the community and didn't rule out a future run in politics. “I promise you, I'll be back,” she told supporters. With the Conservatives holding the riding for over a decade before she was elected, Ramsey said they had a good base of supporters and with polls uncertain as to who would form government prior to the election, she figures that played a part in the election result as well. “We did everything we could to keep the riding,” she stated. “The people of Essex have decided and I respect that deeply.” Ramsey said the NDP still has strong Members of Parliament who will hold the government's “feet to the fire” and she said she will take a step back and see what unfolds. As for what she is most proud of, she said it was the casework she did as well as the work her staff did. She said they got cards and flowers from people they helped over the past four years. It is tough knowing she won't be able to help them further, she stated, but noted the NDP is tough in Essex and will be back, adding praise for her provincial colleague Essex MPP Taras Natyshak. “I firmly believe every day is an opportunity for something,” Ramsey said of her future.

Volunteers with the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society decorate planters during last year’s “Deck the Planters” program. The society is seeking volunteers again this year and is enlisting students from General Amherst High School to help out as well. By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society (AFMHS) is teaming with General Amherst High School on one of the society’s signature projects. AFMHS treasurer Linda Jackson and “Deck the Planters” co-ordinator Carolyn Amlin noted there will be involvement from General Amherst students on “Deck the Planters.” They are still a few weeks away from actual decorating but the horticultural society representatives are enthusiastic to get the youth involved. “They’ll be doing the planters in front of the high school,” said Amlin. “There’s nine of them.” Added Jackson: “we’ll be providing the supplies.” Amlin stated the school has chosen the colours they want for the planters, the school colours of black and gold, and they are going on a field trip to gather the hydrangeas, sedum, Russian sage, thistle and other materials they will need. “They’ll do all the pre-decorating ahead of time,” said Amlin. Plans call for the nine planters in front of General Amherst High School to be decorated Nov. 1 while volunteers from the AFMHS will be out shortly thereafter, likely Nov. 2. “We used to do 100 planters,” said Jackson. “We used to do McGregor and everywhere else.” However, due to a struggle to get enough volunteers and to be able to afford all the materials for the planters, the AFMHS has had to cut back in recent years. They are looking for donations of “greens” and materials can be dropped off at the garage at The House Youth Centre. “We wouldn’t mind having a few bodies come out,” said Amlin, on the day they decorate the planters. “We’re saying come one, come all.” Amlin said the horticultural society hopes the partnership with General Amherst will have “a snowball effect” that will lead to students encouraging their parents and grandparents to get involved. General Amherst teacher Andrea Craig-Wammes said her students are happy to get involved. “I will be ‘decking the planters’ with my Grade 10/11 split class period 1. There are 27 students total 13 Grade 11's and 14 Grade 10's,” said Craig-Wammes. “Students are really excited for this project and plan to use the school colours (black and gold) throughout the planters to show our bulldog pride. I was contacted by Carolyn Amlin and she asked if we wanted to be a part of this process and gave us the theme ‘decking the planters.’ My students were eager to be a part of the process and to do something meaningful for their community.” Jackson said if people from the community wanted to join AFMHS volunteers Nov. 2, it doesn’t have to take a lot of time. “If you have two hours, three hours or even one hour when your child is at piano lessons or whatever,

People should think of things they can do to help the Earth
I joined the hundreds of people at the climate strike in Windsor Sept. 27 because I am learning that the climate is changing all over the Earth due to global warming. I saw and heard from earnest, knowledgeable and concerned people. Someone who spoke to the assembly asked people as the resident caretakers of the planet to make a change in the way they do one thing to reduce consumption of energy and limit the use of harmful chemicals. My Amherstburg home is part of the Great Lakes drainage system. Small rivers, creeks, drainage ditches, marshes and wetland thread through our towns and farming communities on their way to the Detroit River and Lake Erie. This area of lakes is likely to become wetter and hotter in the future. Our river and lake levels recently have been
affected by the changes. Shorelines have eroded. There are homes flooded locally. These conditions speak to our challenges and I want to be part of meeting our climate crisis challenges with action and by being part of the changes that help to avert the crisis we are all facing. So I’m passing along the idea that if we all thought of one way to start doing or stop doing something to help the Earth, we would be helping to make a good home for our children and we’ll be helping the future generations of our families to live in balance with the dynamic powers of our global home, the blue marble of Earth. —Bille Gardner Amherstburg

Let Fire Chief present Fire Protection Ideas Amherstburg is re-doing the master fire plan for the town. Only two or three people showed up to the public meetings. Unfortunate. The Amherstburg Taxpayers Association invited Fire Chief Montone to make a presentation to our members. We had lots of interested members. We thought about 50 people would show up, based on our previous meetings. The Amherstburg Taxpayers Association booked the Sportsman Club for Oct. 24. We sent a notice to all of our members. A good audience was guaranteed. Surprisingly, on Oct. 15, Chief Montone was ordered not to attend. We know this was not Chief Montone’s fault. Someone higher up in rank at town hall ordered Chief Montone not to attend. How sad. Why would Town Hall purposely want to stop the Fire Chief from sharing his ideas with the public? Why would anyone want to shut down Chief Montone? I don’t think anyone at town hall knows fire protection better than Chief Montone. I say let Chief Montone present his ideas to the public. That can only be a good thing. —Tim Gray Amherstburg
Closure of local business found upsetting to resident
This is written as a complaint as to why Amherstburg shoppers have to go into Windsor for services. The framing and trophy store, Custom Creations, was a valuable and necessary part of our community. The proprietor was forced out of business and the store has been vacant ever since. What sense that makes is beyond me. Now, if I want framing done to be done I must travel to Windsor and give them my business. Walt was a master at his craft. Shame on the owner for making the people who shopped in his store extremely upset about the whole thing. —Mary Sue Johnson Amherstburg

St. Clair College students get local rhododendron and azaleas ready for winter
MacDonald, who also thanked the town for letting them work in the park. Money for all programs happening in Amherstburg through the college flows from the Sutherland estate. The funds also help pay for breeding and propagating programs through November.
Instructors Melissa Simpson, Wendy Trahan and Sandy MacDonald came with 26 first-year horticulture students from St. Clair College to help get rhododendron and azalea plants ready for winter. By Ron Giofu A group of students and staff from St. Clair College got rhododendron and azalea plants in Navy Yard Park ready for winter. The group came to Amherstburg and joined volunteers with the Amherstburg Rhododendron Club in deadheading and other tasks that were necessary to prepare the plants for winter. Sandy MacDonald, one of three instructors that came to the park from St. Clair College, explained that “we bring first-year students every year” to help maintain the rhododendrons and azaleas. Second-year students, he added, help fertilize the plants and help in other ways. A second-year student is usually hired through a grant from the estate of Bob and Norma Sutherland to help maintain the park in the summer as well. The late Bob Sutherland was affectionately known as “Rhodo Bob” for his efforts to grow rhododendrons and azaleas in Amherstburg. “It's a great collaboration between the Amherstburg Rhododendron Club and St. Clair College,” said

Future of remaining portion of Centennial Park still up in the air By Ron Giofu
The future of the northern 12 acres of Centennial Park are still a cause of concern for some in the community but the town is guarded as to what it says about what may be happening. The issue came up at last Tuesday’s town council meeting when Bob Rozankovic, president of the Amherstburg Taxpayers Association, emphasized the hope that it remains as parkland. Rozankovic said he is “fully cognizant” that council is limited as to what it can say due to the issue being discussed in-camera, but noted the history of the park dating back to 1933. “It is no secret that the vast majority of residents wanted this acreage moved back into the parks inventory,” said Rozankovic. Reasons why the 12 acres of Centennial Park should remain as parkland, as listed by Rozankovic, include it being the third busiest park in Amherstburg, that the park is central to “a large segment of our population,” it is adjacent to the new public high school site, that the land hasn’t been declared surplus, taxpayers haven’t been consulted as to other uses and that “this community has both financially and emotionally invested in the park
through contributions of money, time and effort” on the part of General Amherst High School and local service clubs. “The park is a tribute to the outstanding contributions of one of Amherstburg’s beloved citizens – H. Murray Smith,” said Rozankovic. Rozankovic added a motion consisting of four items was passed by town council April 23, 2018 with three items pertaining to the former St. Bernard School site and the fourth being that “administration be authorized to move forward with the proposed plans as identified in confidential report number 20180423-c.” He questioned whether that would involve Centennial Park. “During last year’s election cycle, Deputy Mayor Meloche publicly stated that geared-to-income housing would be put at Centennial Park. I’m sure if he broke confidentiality, there would have been an integrity commissioner’s investigation,” said Rozankovic. Rozankovic also challenged other members of council, stating Councillor Don McArthur said Sept. 10 he would “welcome the opportunity” to discuss Centennial Park openly. He said Councillor Patricia Simone was “very passionate” during last year’s discussions on the policing debate and
Residents are expressing concern over the future of the north end of Centennial Park. Further details may be known once the Greater Essex County District School Board finalizes its plans for the new public high school on the southern 15 acres. told Councillor Peter Courtney that “your roots run very deeply in this community.” “Councillor Renaud, as a labour person you have fought for the needs of your brothers and sisters in your local. How about our residents now?” asked Rozankovic. Rozankovic said Councillor Michael Prue is “in a sense” the “elder stateman at the table” and that his guidance is being sought. “During the last election cycle, each of you stated a preference for keeping the remaining 12-and-a-half acres of parkland,” said Rozankovic. “So, councillors, this is your moment. Your defining moment.” Town council received Rozankovic’s delegation without comment, and Mayor Aldo DiCarlo indicated he couldn’t add much when interviewed the next day. “It’s still not an issue we can address yet publicly,” he said. It appears the Greater Essex County
District School Board’s plans for their 15 acres of Centennial Park may factor into what the town does with its share as DiCarlo indicated they are awaiting word on what their plans are. “Everything is tied to everything,” he said. With the new public high school going in the southern 15 acres and the community hub going at the former St. Bernard School site, DiCarlo indicated there will be a lot going on in one general area of Amherstburg. “What is happening at the park in between is still up in the air,” he said. “There are still a lot of moving pieces right now.” The mayor added that “at this stage, we’re still planning” but if any decisions were to be made and any zoning changed, it would have to be done in an open session. “For anyone who thinks we are trying to do something behind closed doors, all of this would have to be discussed publicly,” said DiCarlo.

The Town is unlikely to be successful in recovery of these funds, the account has been written off in accordance with the Town’s Collections Policy.” Courtney believed litigation would be “a waste of money” and believed council should have been better informed of the decision. He would later bring up a motion under new business that if any future matters come up, that they come before council first. Courtney added his view on the matter is that the town policies were not adhered to and “there's dropped balls across the board.” “It never really started with administration. It started at the police services level,” stated Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche. “It was dumped in administration's lap.” Former APSB chair Bob Rozankovic took exception to Meloche's comments, believing the comments were “a falsehood.” Rozankovic said CAO John Miceli and Rousseau came to an APSB meeting where the board was going to recommend legal action to collect the debt but were told by Miceli the town could take it over as it had the resources on hand to collect it and it would be a “black eye” on the town to take legal action. “The Police Services Board did their job. We did not dump on administration,” said Rozankovic, adding administration “asked for this.” He said the board was asked if payments could be received in instalments and only received a $1,000 payment. Then administration stepped
in with “a viable plan", and “that's the facts.” Miceli asked Rozankovic “were they aware they invoices they produced were unrecorded invoices not in the town's books?” The CAO added: “The reason the town stepped in is because you had unrecorded revenue. There were two sets of books. That's what there was. That's the reality.” Courtney tried to diffuse the situation, stating “the past is the past” and that he was concerned more with policy enforcement and not pointing fingers. Diane Pouget, a member of the previous council, told the current council that council had know knowledge of the situation and accused Miceli of going “behind our backs” in meeting with the board. She urged council to review all documents pertaining to the situation, adding she found out about the matter while attending a candidate meeting at the Beacon Ale House last fall. “It came to light because of my questioning and that that was in 2018. Council did not know about it in 2017,” said Pouget. “That is incorrect. The information does exist,” responded Mayor Aldo DiCarlo. “That's all I can say on the matter.” Pouget said if it exists, it should be shown to council. “I can't do that and you should know why,” said DiCarlo. Pouget said none of the other council members knew about it until she raised the issue. DiCarlo later stated council was told about it Sept. 11, 2017.

Progress is being made at the new “community hub” going in at the former St. Bernard School. Work is coming along on the newest location of the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (ECNPLC) and not far behind that is the new location for Amherstburg Community Services (ACS). The ECNPLC is off of a north/south hallway in the school facing the Victoria St. S. side. ACS is being built along an east/ west hallway and is on the Richmond St. side of the building. Pauline Gemmell, executive director of the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic, said there will be five examination rooms and a treatment room as part of their clinic. “We’re excited,” said Gemmell. “The town’s

We’re very grateful to the town for all of the work they are doing and the support they are giving us.” Three nurse practitioners will be hired or have been hired for the new ECNPLC in Amherstburg with a fulltime registered practical nurse also to be on hand. Other services will include a dietician, physiotherapist, social worker and health promoter. It will be the third location for the ECNPLC, with other locations being in Essex and Windsor. “We get to network with other agencies,” said Gemmell. “ACS will be right next door. We can collaborate on different programs.” Phil Roberts, the town’s director of parks, facilities, recreation and culture, said the clinic will take up about 4,400 square feet, with that number expanding to 5,200 square feet if and when they use additional features like a newly created kitchen across the hall as well as a lunchroom and board room. Gemmell said the kitchen will be used for healthy cooking programs, including showing people how to
prepare healthy meals. Roberts said a challenge during construction has been running plumbing and sanitary services to parts of the building that didn’t previously have it, though was pleased that contractors only had to make two cuts into the floor to install the kitchen the ECNPLC will be utilizing. The entire building is approximately 32,000 square feet and Roberts said the remaining part of the former school building is about 16,000 square feet. “Fortunately, the remaining 16,000 square feet can be segregated from what we’re building right now,” said Roberts, meaning when council decides what to do with the remaining part of the school, construction can occur without disturbing ACS and the ECNPLC. “We’re fast tracking as best as we can to get the nurse practitioner clinic open,” said Roberts. The hope is that the clinic will move in within the next few weeks. A seniors “drop in” area is anticipated by the new-look main entrance.

New “community hub” taking shape
Waad Mikha does some painting in a north/south hallway near the Essex County Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic. The former St. Bernard School will also house Amherstburg Community Services and some yet-to-be determined agencies. Continued from Page 8 ACS is also expected to move into the building later this year. They too are getting their own kitchen with the ACS kitchen being a commercial facility that will be able to house programs like Meals on Wheels. ACS executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo said they will have roughly 1,000 more square feet than their current office at 179 Victoria St. S. “We’re very excited,” said DiBartolomeo, “to not only expand the number of programs we have but
to expand the amount of agencies we partner with and expand those community partnerships.” DiBartolomeo said she can look out of her window at her current office and see the progress of her future office and she likes what she sees. There will be programs for residents of all ages, she said, and programming for people both in the day and in the evening. Roberts said the portion of the former Catholic elementary school dates back to 1958 and construction methods used back then have resulted in extra costs when renovating the building. “It’s got quite a history to it,” he said. That said, Roberts praised the town’s decision to purchase the building and renovate it into a community hub. “In many cases, people shy away from repurposing older buildings,” said Roberts. “I think repurposing this building was an excellent choice.” “It’s a great use of a repurposed building in town,” agreed DiBartolomeo. “Having all the services under one roof will be exciting.” As of now, the gymnasium will stay as it is and decisions are still to be made by town council as to what will go in the rest of the building. The town has a lot of requests and choices will have to be made as to who will get to move into the other 16,000 square feet of yet-to-be-upgraded space. The town purchased the building for $550,000 from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board in 2018. Funding of $650,000 was received from the province to cover building upgrades.

New owner plans to make downtown building into local bookshop By Ron Giofu
When the River Town Times moves across Richmond St. in January, the current site won’t sit vacant for very long. The building at 67 Richmond St., at the corner of Ramsay St., will be transformed from the River Town Times office to the River Bookshop early next year. Richard Peddie, the retired Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) president/CEO and president of the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF), has purchased the building from Peter Leardi and assumed ownership Oct. 17. Peddie says he plans on restoring the exterior to look like it did in 1885. “Outside, we’ll replicate 1885,” said Peddie. “It will be cozy inside but it won’t replicate 1885.” Peddie envisions wooden shelves and varieties of books including fiction, history, art, nature, science and a children’s area with books, tables and chairs. He has hired the Toronto-based architectural firm Lebel & Bouliane to design the building with a local contractor to perform the work. “I’ve been a bibliophile for a long time,” said Peddie, stating he was

known for that during his days with MLSE. “My dad was a big reader. My mentors were books.” One of Peddie’s goals was to write a book and now he has two to his credit – Dream Job and 21 Leadership Lessons. After their release, Peddie began contemplating his own store and contacted independent bookshop owners in Toronto, Burlington and Sarnia for advice on how to proceed. “They are all competing against Indigo and online and they were willing to share their ideas,” he said. Peddie said he was 24 hours away from leasing another property but then heard of the opportunity to buy the building at Richmond and Ramsay. “I got wind that 67 Richmond was up for sale. I found out on a Thursday and bought it on a Saturday,” Peddie said. “I love that it’s on a corner and on a main street.” Peddie added he is a believer in sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s “Third Place Theory” which states “everyone needs a place to live, work and go to.” While there are coffee shops, craft breweries, the library and other locations to fulfill the third need, Peddie wants to add one more cultural destination to the town.

Skate-a-thon raises money for new vehicle for Amherstburg Community Services
By Jonathan Martin Skate Amherstburg helped Amherstburg Community Services (ACS) skate part of the way to a new vehicle last Saturday. Around 30 people laced up and took to the ice at the Amherstburg Libro Centre, where Skate Amherstburg hosted an hour-long “Glide So Seniors Can Ride” skate-a-thon, the proceeds from which will go toward purchasing a new “care-a-van” for ACS’ fleet. ACS uses its vehicles for a variety of purposes across Windsor-Essex County, from delivering food to those who can’t cook through its meals-on-wheels program to shuttling those who can’t drive to their medical appointments. They even shuttle students to St. Clair College. ACS works its fleet hard, said ASC executive director Kathy DiBartolomeo. It runs its vehicles into the ground every four years or so. “We use our vehicles quite a bit,” she said. “We need the transportation to get around 100 or 150 people to their day-away programs.” Branka Stewin heads the effort. She’s ACS’ meals on wheels and transportation coordinator. “People don’t use us until they need us,” Stewin
said. “When people are in crisis and they need to get their loved ones to the doctor or the hospital and can no longer get them into the car, that’s when they call us.” She said Lynn Fox, Skate Amherstburg’s president, approached ACS “very kindly and generously,” intent on collaborating to raise funds. “We think it’s important to give back to the community outside of our usual non-profit services; to work within the community as a community organization,” Fox said. Skate Amherstburg organized some very wobbly games of on-ice basketball, soccer and hacky sack for the event’s younger skaters. Toward the end of the skate-a-thon, Skate Amherstburg volunteers brought a massive playground parachute onto the ice so the children could try to play their billowy games on skates. While the youngsters were occupied, their guardians could sign up for pledges and indulge their sweet teeth at a bake sale run by ACS volunteers. Local nurse heading to Dominican Republic for missionary work By Jonathan Martin
Alexa Kempfer tries to draw traffic to her friend, Tirzah Krey’s, fundraising barbecue on Alma Street in Amherstburg recently. Kempfer said she has “mixed feelings” about saying goodbye to Krey, who hopes to leave by February.
A local nurse is taking her power of healing – both physical and spiritual – overseas. Tirzah Krey, 25, is preparing to work as a regional human care coordinator for the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) in the Dominican Republic. Once she lands in the Caribbean country, she’ll take responsibility for the physical, mental and spiritual health of over 100 people, made up of Lutheran missionaries and their families. “Missionaries tend to not care for themselves,” she said. “My role will be to take care of them so they can take care of others.” She’ll also do health visits and provide health education to locals within her area of coverage, which will extend across Latin America. This isn’t the first time she’ll be doing missionary work overseas, though. She’s done short-term trips to spread the Gospel and visit her brothers and sisters. She’s the fourth sibling in her family to take their faith-based vocation to a different country. “As a mother, I’ve started the grieving process,” Joan Krey, Tirzah’s mother, said. “One more of my children is leaving here, but that’s life and that’s where their careers and their love takes them. She’s doing something very good and I’m happy for that.” Tirzah hopes to hop on a plane by February, but it all depends on when she reaches her goal of raising $100,000 in Canadian funds. She’s responsible for raising the amount each year. She took her fundraising to her home congregation at Amherstburg’s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church recently. “It’s not in the budget to pay the way for our missionaries, so they’re responsible for their own
funding now,” Joan said. Her late husband was a Lutheran pastor who was sent to Canada as a missionary from the United States. It’s a far cry from how things worked at Tirzah’s previous job. She spent two years working at Harper University Hospital in Detroit. Before that, she received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Windsor. “I love nursing and I love Jesus,” Tirzah said. “This way, I get to do both.”

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION #157 REMEMBRANCE DAY WREATH CEREMONY
The Remembrance Day wreath ceremony identifies and honours those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during conflict or who succumbed to their wounds as a result of the conflict. Designated Government (Federal, Provincial, and Municipal), Legion, Canadian Armed Forces, Municipal Services and Community Service Clubs wreaths will be placed during the ceremony. Personal wreaths (those of which are recognized on the Cenotaph plaque) will be called and placed during the ceremony. Private family wreaths placed in memory of loved ones may be placed after the dismissal of the parade. Commercial and Business wreaths will be placed in position prior to 10:00 am Monday, November 11, 2019. Note: The Branch conducts a parade and wreath ceremony and grave decoration on Decoration Day (1st Sunday of June 2020) to acknowledge any members of the Legion who have passed.
2019 ANNUAL POPPY CAMPAIGN Business Executives and Supporters of the Legion
On behalf of the Poppy Chair Allan Kinsey, I extend to you an invitation to support the annual Poppy Campaign. The Annual distribution of Poppies & Wreaths is the sole appeal by Royal Canadian Legions for the Benevolent Funds Branch. Poppy Funds are held in trust, to be used for emergency assistance to Veterans, their dependents and the children of deceased ex-service personnel. All money, collected by our branch, is spent in the Amherstburg area and used to assist our Veterans at our district hospital, the Parkwood Campus of Victoria Hospital, in London, Ontario. The Poppy Fund is the Legion’s way of remembering the debt owed, by all of us, to those who sacrificed so much on our behalf, that we might continue to enjoy the freedoms that we all too often take for granted. It is the Legion’s sincere belief, that all Canadians appreciate this annual opportunity to contribute in a special way to the payment of this debt. In addition to the Act of Remembrance, contributions to the Poppy Fund are tangible expressions of thanks, to the men and women who gave their lives, and also to those who became disabled while serving their country. Please notify our Legion Branch 157, by return mail or at rclbranch157@cogeco.net NO LATER THAN NOV. 8th ( ) Donation to Poppy Fund $ _____________ ( ) Remembrance Wreath $75.00 ______________ (quantity) A limited number of wreaths are available on a first come first served basis. Wreaths may be purchased at the Legion or by sending a cheque to the Branch at the address above. Please make cheques payable to “RCL Branch 157” Commercial and Business Wreaths will be placed at the Cenotaph prior to the ceremony at 10:50 am November 11th, 2019. A list of contributors will be read and publicized to express our sincerest thanks. For your convenience, anyone wishing to place their wreath in a private moment may do so between 1:00am and 7:00am on Monday November 11th, 2019 during the 202 Army Cadet Corps Vigil.
POPPY FUND In addition to the Act of Remembrance, contributions to the Poppy Fund are tangible expressions of thanks, to the men and women who gave their lives, and also to those who became disabled while serving their country. Your being a member of the Branch demonstrates your support for the Royal Canadian Legion and what the institution represents. Should you wish to make a contribution to the branch specifically, an alternate option exists. Donations to the Operating Fund can be used to assist in supporting the Branch, as well. Please indicate the direction of your generous gift on your cheque by identifying POPPY or OPERATING. Please make cheques payable to “RCL Branch 157”. Note that the Fort Malden Branch 157 does not hold a “Charitable” number and donations are not tax deductible. On behalf of Branch 157, thank you in advance for your generosity. Doug Innes, Poppy Chair RCL Fort Malden Branch 157 Volunteers needed for Poppy Distribution. Please call if interested.

Admirals get back on winning track by downing Dresden 5-1 By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Admirals got back on the winning track with a convincing win Sunday night. The Admirals, who hadn't played since a loss to Essex the previous Sunday, defeated the Dresden Kings 5-1 at the Libro Centre. Andrew Clark and Kyle Meloche got things going in the first period for Amherstburg with a pair of shorthanded goals and Max Clifford would score in the same period to give the Admirals a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Admirals and Kings would swap goals in the second period with Reid Stieler scoring just 53 seconds into the middle frame with Eric Carter replying a few minutes later for Dresden. Clifford scored his second of the night on a pretty solo effort in the third period. It was the first win on home ice this
year and Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon called it “as much as a must win you are going to see.” That said, he thought they could have played better. “You look up and down the lineup, we didn't get a good effort from everyone tonight,” he said after Sunday night's win. “Maybe it's a sign that we have a pretty good team when you can do that and still come out with a win.” The Admirals had a good first period, Bortignon said, and he thought Clifford had a good game. “I thought he was pretty dynamic tonight,” he said. “Getting Christian McBride back was a big boost.” Goalie Nick Bolton had a good game and Bortignon said he is showing signs of getting more comfortable in net for the Admirals. Their young players are becoming more comfortable as well, with Bortignon stating that is showing in practice and carrying over into

Amherstburg’s Max Clifford breaks in on Dresden goalie Rhett Devries during third period action Sunday at the Libro Centre. Clifford would score his second goal of the game on the play with the Admirals winning 5-1. games. The Admirals do not have another home game until the Essex 73's return to the Libro Centre Nov. 10 and will play six straight on the road. Bortignon said they have to take advantage of their off-days as there are stretches when they play games on consecutive nights. “You obviously want to win every game you play but we know it's not going to be easy. Ultimately, we're taking it one game at a time.” The Jr. C hockey club is also getting
healthy and more players are returning to the lineup. Bolton and Mitchell Demelo also played Saturday in the PJHL Stobbs Division prospects game and Bolton picked up the win in net. Demelo also played a strong game, said Bortignon. “We're very happy to see they represented us well,” said Bortignon. The Admirals are in Wheatley Wednesday (Oct. 23) for a 7:30 p.m. game before going to Blenheim Sunday for a 7 p.m. game.

Bulldogs pleased with effort despite loss to strong Holy Names team By Ron Giofu
The scoreboard may not have reflected it, but the General Amherst Bulldogs senior football team was happy with their effort last week. The Bulldogs hosted the Holy Names Knights last Thursday at the Libro Centre and the strong Knights team came away with a 36-0 victory. The Knights were up 14-0 after the first quarter thanks to
40 and 47-yard touchdown runs with an 80-yard touchdown run being called back on a penalty. In the second quarter, Holy Names scored two more touchdowns thanks to a two-yard run and a ten-yard touchdown run to build a 28-0 halftime advantage. A one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put the Knights up 35-0 and they added a single point in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Howson (11) heads upfield on a carry during the Bulldogs’ home game against Holy Names last Thursday. Holy Names improved to 4-1 with a 36-0 win while General Amherst dropped to 2-2. Holy Names improved to 4-1 on the 2019 WECSSAA Tier 1 West senior football season while General Amherst dropped to 2-2. “It was a tough game,” noted General Amherst's Ethan Reaume. However, Reaume believed it was their best effort to date, as they played solid fundamental football against a team they knew that was going to be tough to defeat. “We played better than we thought,” he added. General Amherst head coach John Rudak was also happy with the way the Bulldogs play, the score notwithstanding. “We put up a great effort. Our defense played great on first down,” he said. Rudak said the coaching staff was able to get a look at a lot of players.
“We did get a lot of guys in the game,” said Rudak. “We found some diamonds in the rough right now.” The Bulldogs' goal was to put points on the board but while they didn't do that, there were opportunities particularly in the first quarter. “We held our own against those guys,” said Rudak. “They are a very good football team.” The next game for General Amherst is this Thursday (Oct. 24) at 7 p.m. at the Libro Centre against the Brennan Cardinals. The Cardinals come to Amherstburg fresh off of a 30-0 win over Villanova last Friday. General Amherst concludes the WECSSAA Tier 1 West regular season Nov. 1 with a 7 p.m. game against the Sandwich Sabres in LaSalle.

General Amherst’s Abby Orchard collides with a Lajeunesse player during the third quarter of last Tuesday evening’s WECSSAA Tier 1 senior girls basketball game. Lajeunesse used a strong second half to defeat the Lady Gens.

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens senior girls basketball team were in action twice last week and while they came close to winning, they fell short in both. The first game of the week was last Tuesday evening on their home court and they were not able to keep things going after a good first half and lost 36-25. The Lady Gens led 15-8 at halftime but Lajeunesse started strong in the third quarter and took a 27-22 lead after 24 minutes. General Amherst head coach Dom Silvaggio said they got into foul trouble against Lajeunesse but noted they simply didn't play as well in the second half as they did in the first half. “Our defensive intensity was not the same in the second half,” said Silvaggio. “They are too good of a team to hold to eight points.” Free throw shooting was also a problem for the Lady Gens as they were only two-for-14 from the charity stripe against Lajeunesse. “Our rebounding wasn't good in the first half and in the second half it was

even worse,” he said. “When you give up a lot of rebounds, you end up fouling.” Lexi Dodds led General Amherst in scoring with nine points while Emma Pillon had seven points. Allison Dufour scored three points while Brynlee Ammonite, Dani Brindley and Abbie Drouillard had two each. The Lady Gens hit the road two nights later and played at Massey. General Amherst kept the final score close but the Mustangs came away with a 35-32 victory. That loss put the Lady Gens at 2-6 on the WECSSAA Tier 1 regular season. Dodds scored 13 points last Thursday at Massey while Ammonite had four points. General Amherst will look to pick up their third win of the season Thursday evening in the final game of the regular season as the winless St. Joseph Lasers come to Amherstburg for a 4 p.m. game. The junior Lady Gens are yet to record a victory, but are progressing. They lost 33-29 at Sandwich Oct. 10, and then were defeated last Thursday at Massey 58-24. They also host St. Joseph this Thursday (Oct. 24) with their game being at 5:30 p.m.

Bulldogs end the week well on the volleyball court By Ron Giofu Both the General Amherst Bulldogs senior and junior boys volleyball teams concluded the week on a strong note. Fresh off of a 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 loss at Lajeunesse last Tuesday night, the senior Bulldogs returned to their home court where they knocked off the visiting Kennedy Clippers 25-21, 25-23 and 27-29 last Thursday. The juniors swept their way to victory against Lajeunesse Tuesday and took two of three sets against Kennedy two nights later. “We did well tonight,” said Craig Lohnes, who coaches both teams, after Thursday's matches. “The seniors and juniors both won.” The senior Bulldogs “played better tonight. I think that was the key. They kept their intensity up most of
the way.” Lohnes said the teams are better than in the beginning of the year, as the goal was to keep improving as the 2019 WECSSAA Tier 1 volleyball season went along. “They are both playing well,” he said. “We're coming right along. It's good to see.” Thursday's win for the senior Bulldogs was “a good feeling especially after Tuesday's loss,” added Lohnes. The junior Bulldogs (5-4) and the senior Bulldogs (2-7) concluded the WECSSAA regular season Tuesday at General Amherst against the Essex Red Raiders. The seniors have a play-in game at some point the week of Nov. 4 so they get a break before the post-season begins. “It's all about one game when it gets to that point,” said Lohnes.

Ken Grant and Heather Shank stand with some of the Halloween props and decorations in Grant’s front yard. The two families are trying to raise donations for the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission. By Ron Giofu Neighbours on McLellan Ave. are not only decorating their yards for Halloween, they are also using the opportunity to help a local organization. The Grant family at 440 McLellan and the Shank family at 437 McLellan have spent months getting ready for Halloween and are working to set up their displays in their respective front yards. As part of their festivities, both families have put out collection boxes for the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission and are asking for those who stop by before, during, and even a few days after Halloween to drop off canned goods and non-perishable food items. They will also drop off any monetary donations directly to the mission. “This is the third year we’ve done it,” said Ken Grant. “We hope this year will be another success for the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission.” Heather Shank said donation boxes will be at both homes as long as the decorations are out. “We’ll have bins out every night,” said Shank. “People can drop their donations off.” Grant said they have been getting people driving by and stopping to check out their Halloween decorations already, even though it has been a workin-progress for much of the last week. The Grants have a butcher shop and crematorium theme, while the Shanks have decked their front yard out in a haunted carnival theme. “There’s a couple of families that come every night,” said Shank. “People want to see it lit up at night.” “We’ve been meeting a lot of neighbours who we don’t usually see,” continued Grant. “It’s a lot of social interaction too.”
Shank said there are people in their Kingsbridge South community that consider the Halloween decorations “a fixture in the neighbourhood.” Grant said they enjoy seeing people’s faces as they look at their decorations. “A lot of kids look forward to this and so do a lot of parents,” added Grant. “We do it because we enjoy it.” Grant stated he started working on his props in April but it was July when he started working harder on it in preparation for Halloween. His yard this year features multiple props and attractions, including a vomiting zombie and actual caskets while the Shanks have a haunted merry-go-round and other features as well. “Every year, we try to change our themes,” said Grant, adding that his theme next year will be a wedding chapel. While both families will purchase items for their Halloween displays, they also say they reuse discarded items. As an example, Grant used wood leftover from when he built a fence and leftover Styrofoam from when the former AMA Arena was torn down. “We’re dumpster divers,” Shank said with a laugh. “You’d be surprised at what people throw away.” The two families have a friendly competition as to whose yard is better, but also share ideas and help each other out in different ways. Because they have become such an attraction in their neighbourhood, the two families decided to branch out and use it to help a worthy cause like the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission. “We all know people in the community are in need of food items,” said Grant. “It’s always nice to help someone.”

Poppy campaign getting underway
Royal Canadian Legion Br. 157 got the 2019 poppy campaign underway last Wednesday by making several stops around Amherstburg. Br. 157 president Laurie Cavanaugh, service officer Richard Girard, Sgt. At Arms Tim Girard, honours and awards chair Don Nantais and poppy chair Doug Innes stopped at Richmond Terrace Long Term Care Home where they presented poppies to veterans Roger Milette and Roy Grant. They followed that with a stop at Seasons Amherstburg where they presented poppies to Cyril Bilodeau, Kris Martin, Leighton Buchner, Robert Burns, Doug Ramsay, Larry McIntyre, Derek Elliot and Henry Ritchie (Leslie Pellow and John Mallett were unable to attend the photo shoot). The Legion members then went to town hall where they pinned a poppy to the lapel of Mayor Aldo DiCarlo.

Park House Museum gets ready for Halloween with “All Hallow’s Eve”
By Jonathan Martin The Park House Museum is getting spooky in preparation for Halloween. History buffs got the chance to try some period apple cider, listen to haunting folk tales, taste some cookies, watch some woodworking, see some tin smithing and observe the solemnity of an 18th century wake last Sunday at the museum’s annual Halloween festival. “In the past, we’ve focused on the autumnal practices of the 19th century,” Park House Museum curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak said as she prepared this year’s tobacco harvest for drying and brining. “This year, we wanted to focus on the 1700s and the artisanal crafts they would have used to prepare for the winter season, since (the 18th century is) around the time when the
Park House was first built.” In the 18th century, Amherstbug didn’t yet exist. Irish and Scottish settlers had brought their early Halloween traditions to the U.S., but they wouldn’t make the trek to the Canadian side of the river until after the American revolution in the 1780s and Fort Malden’s development in the 1790s. Olwyn Coughlin, dressed in a pointed hat and a bat-adorned robe a l’Anglaise, described the way the settlers’ traditions developed with the dynamic cadence of a veteran storyteller. “Today is all about what all those people did all that time ago to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve’,” she said. “For it was a festival that would have been well-celebrated in Amherstburg. We know that many of the pensioners who
were at the Fort were enlisted men of Scots-Irish descent. They brought their stories, their superstitions and their traditions with them to this strange new world, and here they grew and flourished and evolved with each retelling.” Coughlin, a professional storyteller who often volunteers at the museum, shared some of her spookier fare with wide-eyed listeners. Tales about fleshless bog hags and deals with the devil rang out from the parlor, where, on the couch, a pair of high-heeled shoes poked out from beneath a black shroud. Someone had died, it seemed, and Coughlin was telling her stories at the person’s wake. “I love this time of year,” she said, glancing at the body.

General Amherst tennis player heading back to OFSAA By Ron Giofu
A tennis player at General Amherst High School has stamped his return ticket to OFSAA. Matteo Palumbo will be returning to the provincial high school tournament after advancing at both WECSSAA and SWOSSAA. While Palumbo had recent success both locally and regionally, he will have to wait until June before he tries his hand provincially. “I was playing pretty well,” he said. “I went undefeated in the WECSSAA qualifier and at the WECSSAA tournament. I won the first two matches at SWOSSAA and then ran into a really tough opponent in the SWOSSAA final and lost.” Palumbo then played for second place and earned that, which enabled him to get a berth into the OFSAA SUBMITTED PHOTO tournament in Toronto next year. He said he knows some of the competition but also anticipates running into some new players there as well. “I have a long time to get ready,” he said. This will be Palumbo's second straight year at OFSAA, as he competed at last year's OFSSA tennis tournament and for The Co-Operators, went 2-2.
