Town pursuing $50M grant for “ Great Spaces, Great Places” By Ron Giofu The town is looking to get a bunch of projects off of its plate and do so under one big grant proposal. A $50 million grant is being sought under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) to fund a host of projects, including botanical gardens and outdoor amenities at Belle Vue, completion of the Duffy's project, linking neighbourhoods in the Simcoe St. area, and fully developing the Libro Centre property with a new 25m pool, baseball diamonds, trails along Big Creek, a nature lookout, festival plaza, pickleball courts, skateboard park and tennis courts. CAO John Miceli credited his staff for coming together to complete the proposal, which is entitled “Great Spaces, Great Places.” He believes it demonstrates fiscal responsibility as the town would pay 27 cents for every dollar invested. A successful grant application would result in the federal government kicking in $20 million, another $16.5 million coming from the province while $13.5 million would be paid by the town. Miceli stated money would start being put aside in the 2020 budget, and that would show the upper levels of government the town is serious about the projects. “We have competing battles going on throughout our community as it relates to infrastructure but this is the opportunity to leverage senior levels of government for 27 cents on the dollar,” he said.

CAO John Miceli goes over the “Great Spaces, Great Places” grant application during Monday night’s council meeting. The town is seeking $50 million under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. If the grant is successful, the town would address 48 of the 77 recommendations laid out in the Parks Master Plan, five of the 29 strategic plan recommendations and five primary goals of the Official Plan, he stated. The project would be financed over seven years, if the grant request is successful, which is the same time frame for completion of the projects. The Belle Vue house itself is not covered under this grant, as Miceli noted the town has partnered with the Belle Vue Conservancy on a separate $4.29 million grant request. Town council could, over time, scale back the overall project but “it's an application to get us to the table,” he said. The grant application is due Nov. 12. “We believe ours is a very unique project,” he said.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said “it is almost too good to believe.” He indicated costs would be higher if the town were to look at these projects on its own individually. Both DiCarlo and Miceli indicated these are projects residents have been asking for and DiCarlo said it is a vision that could benefit the town long-term. “When the CAO brought this to my attention, as a politician I was speechless,” said DiCarlo. Asked where people are going to stay if this grant becomes reality, the mayor revealed the downtown hotel could break ground in the spring while the hotel proposed near the Libro Centre is coming along. Both developers are trying not to duplicate amenities, said the mayor.

Western Secondary School’s “Pumpkinfest” a smash

By Ron Giofu The hallways, cafeteria, library and gymnasium at Western Secondary School were abuzz with crafters, vendors and more last weekend. The school held its annual “Pumpkinfest” last Saturday and Sunday with large crowds and a record number of vendors turning out. Sam Thomas, one of the Western teachers who helps co-ordinate the event, said they had 128 vendors this year, the highest amount ever. Thomas said the money raised goes right back into the Greater Essex County District School Board school, with it being used to cover expenses like field trips, guest speakers and other things the students may need throughout the year. She estimated they raised about $10,000 from the vendors alone, with more money coming in through the

sales of baked goods and crafts made by the students. Many of the studentmade crafts sold out Saturday, she pointed out. “Pumpkinfest” started as an auction and the teacher who started it, Pete Simone, was at the school last Saturday. “He thinks (it started) 40 years ago. It's probably closer to 35 but he thinks it's 40,” said Thomas. Vendors came down from as far as Chatham, London and Toronto. Thomas believes “Pumpkinfest” has blossomed into the success it has is because “people want to support the school.” Windsor author Edmond Gagnon was at “Pumpkinfest” for the second year. He said he did well last year and wanted to return. “I'm trying to expand my readership into the county,” he said. Gagnon said he

attends shows in Tilbury, Kingsville, Chatham and Windsor and said the show at Western Secondary compares well. He has eight titles, mostly crime fiction, travel and one paranormal thriller. Bryanna Fahringer and Shey Kidder, two Western Secondary students running their craft table, reported brisk business. “We sold a lot of things,” said Fahringer, with Kidder adding “we sold out of our studentmade crafts.” Kidder stated “it's always busy” at “Pumpkinfest” and both students said they created a number of different baked goods and crafts and were pleased with how popular they were. Jane Little, manning the booth selling her daughter Darby's “The Burg” clothing items, said it was her first year at “Pumpkinfest” but said it won't be

Huge grant being proposed were “amazing features” outlined but also cautioned about costs and that there are “pros and cons to everything.” “I spoke to the developer (of the “I support the plan moving Simcoe St. hotel) just the other day and forward. Let's see what we can do,” we continue to move forward with the added Councillor Marc Renaud, with plan,” said DiCarlo. Councillor Don McArthur calling it “a Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche was fantastic plan” and one that “will get supportive of the grant request and the the people excited.” 27 cents on the dollar concept. “If you have to scale it back you scale “One of the things taxpayers need to it back, but the ask has to be for the full understand is there are hidden costs to monty,” said McArthur. all of these projects,” added Meloche. Upon questioning from Councillor Councillor Peter Courtney said there Patricia Simone, Miceli noted the town will be applying on both streams. While R E they are going for the full N FAST shot, Miceli pointed out W O individual projects will W be applied for under a E N different stream. By Ron Giofu The Rotary Club of Amherstburg is hosting an exchange student over the next year. Enzo Biguena, a student from Reunion Island, is the local service club’s exchange student. Reunion Island is an overseas department and region of France and an island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Biguena is currently residing with Scott and Joan Donaldson and is attending General Amherst High School. He has been in Amherstburg for about a month and is enjoying his Canadian experience so far. “I want to travel around the world. The Rotary Youth Exchange program is a big opportunity for me. That’s why I did it,” Biguena explained. The changing of seasons is a different experience for him, with one season in particular being anticipated. “I don’t have winter,” he said. “I’ve never seen snow before.” Saying “it’s really different,” Biguena stated he has enjoyed his time in Canada so far with that including a trip to Point Pelee National Park, trips around Amherstburg and being a running back on the General Amherst football team. “I love football,” said Biguena. “I have played rugby. It’s a little bit different.” Canada is living up to its advance billing, he noted. “Before I left my island, everyone told me Canada is a great country and everyone is very nice,” he said. “That’s very true. Everyone is very nice to me.” Biguena said he hopes to travel more once his year in Canada is up. “I’m just happy to be here and I want to say thank you to Rotary,” he said. “It is a very big honour to be here. It’s amazing. A big thank you to Rotary.”

Organizer of “Kickin’ Cancer to the Curb” fundraiser brands it a success

Sophia Pereira, 7, donates some money to “Kicking Cancer to the Curb One Boot at a Time” at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. The donation will go towards installing a new 3D mammography machine at Windsor Regional Hospital. By Jonathan Martin A local woman is “Kickin’ Cancer to the Curb One Boot at a Time” during Amherstburg’s first ever breast cancer awareness month. Alison Baldwin, who is spearheading an initiative to support the purchase of a new 3D digital mammography machine at Windsor Regional Hospital, held a fundraiser at the Libro Centre earlier this month. The machine combines multiple x-rays, taken from different angles, into a three-dimensional image of a patient’s breast. Digital mammography is less invasive than traditional mammography, increases health practitioners’ ability to detect breast cancer and reduces the number of falsely-positive test results, according to Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation (WRHF) manager of philanthropy Cristina Naccarato. To install the new technology, the

WRHF needs to raise $500,000. Part of that money is coming from Baldwin’s “Kickin’ Cancer to the Curb One Boot at a Time” initiative. Last weekend, she and her team of volunteers collected donations, provided information pamphlets and sold donated jewelry. “We’re trying to do our part to get early diagnostics into our community,” Baldwin said. “I don’t have breast cancer, but one in eight women do. It hits everyone. I don’t know why it’s so prominent in our area, but I can tell you that based on the women coming through (our booth at the Libro Centre), it’s a big issue.” This region has higher-thanaverage cancer rates for three of the four most common cancers, the 2018 Cancer System Quality Index shows. “Misdiagnosis is an especially big problem,” Baldwin added. “Women are being scared for no reason or aren’t seeking treatment when they should be.”

Suzanne Simone, who volunteered at Baldwin’s booth, said a doctor told her she was healthy in April only to find a tumor herself a few weeks later. Today, months after her May breast cancer diagnosis, she said she is trying to push through her treatment. “I can’t believe the strength of these women,” Baldwin said. She kissed Simone on the head. “What I’m doing is nothing compared to what they do.” It is the first in a series of fundraisers Baldwin will be involved with, including a fundraiser that will be held in conjunction with the Windsor Spitfires.

Local family celebrates 20th anniversary of pumpkin carving party By Ron Giofu

A local family's pumpkin carving efforts have expanded over the years to where it is now a large affair. The Mulder family, along with family and friends, came to the Unifor 1959 Bud Jimmerfield Hall on Pickering Dr. last Friday night where they spent several hours carving pumpkins and making jack-o-lanterns with unique designs on them. Dawn Mulder said it started as a

small family gathering that has turned into a large family gathering. “We've been doing this for 20 years and we've never repeated a pattern,” she said. While family and friends go in and out during the course of the evening, Mulder said they can have upwards of 70-75 people during the course of the night. About 30 or so were there at evening's end last week. “It's basically family and friends

Park House Museum gets ready for Halloween with “All Hallow’s Eve”

COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, October 30, 2019 - 9

Park House Museum curator Stephanie PougetPapak prepares tobacco leaves for drying and brining at the Park House Museum in Amherstburg. Both the museum and Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada grow tobacco in their gardens, which she prepares for winter after the harvest.

Olwyn Coughlin, a professional storyteller, shares her frightful tales with patrons of the Park House Museum in Amherstburg. The museum held its annual Halloween festival earlier this month. By Jonathan Martin The Park House Museum is getting spooky in preparation for Halloween. History buffs got the chance to try some period apple cider, listen to haunting folk tales, taste some cookies, watch some woodworking, see some tin smithing and observe the solemnity of an 18th century wake at the museum’s annual “All Hallow’s Eve” festival. “In the past, we’ve focused on the autumnal practices of the 19th century,” Park House Museum curator Stephanie Pouget-Papak said as she prepared this year’s tobacco harvest for drying and brining. “This year, we wanted to focus on the 1700s and the artisanal crafts they would have used to prepare for the winter season, since (the 18th century is) around the time when the Park House was first built.” In the 18th century, Amherstbug didn’t yet exist. Irish and Scottish settlers had brought their early Halloween traditions to the U.S., but they wouldn’t make the trek to the Canadian side of the river until after the American revolution in the 1780s and Fort Malden’s development in the 1790s. Olwyn Coughlin, dressed in a pointed hat and a bat-adorned robe a l'Anglaise, described the way the settlers’ traditions developed with the dynamic cadence of a veteran storyteller. “Today is all about what all those people did all that time ago to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve’,” she said. “For it was a festival that would have been

well-celebrated in Amherstburg. We know that many of the pensioners who were at the Fort were enlisted men of Scots-Irish descent. They brought their stories, their superstitions and their traditions with them to this strange new world, and here they grew and flourished and evolved with each retelling.” Coughlin, a professional storyteller who often volunteers at the museum, shared some of her spookier fare with wide-eyed listeners. Tales about fleshless bog hags and deals with the devil rang out from the parlor, where, on the couch, a pair of high-heeled shoes poked out from beneath a black shroud. Someone had died, it seemed, and Coughlin was telling her stories at the person’s wake. “I love this time of year,” she said, glancing at the body.

Sold out crowd at dinner to support Hope of St. Joseph Shelter By Ron Giofu

A sold out crowd of about 200 people at the Columbus Community Hall raised awareness of the need for both sponsors and money for the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter. A fundraising dinner was held to support the shelter in the DR Congo, which is run by Father Donato Lwiyando. Father Donato was the associate pastor at St. John the Baptist Church in Amherstburg before returning to the Congo to run the shelter that he founded. “I am very happy that you are helping,” he said in a recorded message that was played at the dinner. “You are raising human beings up.” Father Donato thanked those who attended and the sponsors for spending their time and money to help out and to “spread love.” “Thank you for all you are doing,” he told the crowd via recording. Mary Beneteau, a member of the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter committee in Amherstburg and the committee's secretary, communicates with Father Donato regularly. She noted changes he has made allows for 46 girls and young women at the shelter, many of whom have been raped before coming there. “He has a tremendous task. It's not an easy job,” said Beneteau. “Many come from brothels or off the street.” Eight girls were reunited with their families this year, she added. Father Donato is trying to have the shelter be

A sold out crowd of about 200 people attended the event. self-sustaining but significant fundraising still occurs in Canada to help the shelter. Beneteau and her husband Marc held “God's Yard Sale” in August at their Middle Side Road home and raised $14,000 there plus another $8,000 before the main yard sale through online sales and other events. That gave them the $22,000 they needed to provide an education for the girls, though Beneteau noted the exchange rate isn't doing them any favours. “We have a sponsorship program and accept donations,” she said. “We believe the Hope of St. Joseph Shelter is God's shelter and he gave Father Donato the job of running it.” Volunteer and sponsor Shelly Bondy said they

would like to double the 92 sponsors they have. She announced they have raised enough pledges to buy a piece of property to build a new school on and are now fundraising to construct the new school. “It's Father Donato's dream to build a school on the land to go across to the other land (the shelter is on),” said Bondy. To donate, people can make an e-transfer from their financial institution to stjoseph@hopeislife.ca or mail a cheque to Hope of St. Joseph Shelter, 273 Fryer St., Amherstburg, ON N9V 3G7. Bulldogs looking to get back on winning track after third straight loss In the first two games of the season, both General Amherst victories, the Bulldogs were able to apply pressure. In the last three games, the pressure has been applied by the opponents. “It makes things very difficult,” said Rudak. General Amherst has only scored one point the last three weeks but Rudak doesn't believe good things are that far away. The Bulldogs have been “so close on a lot of things” but Rudak said they have had difficulty creating their own luck and getting results the last three weeks. “Everything is so close,” he said. Defensive co-ordinator Joel Charron noted Brennan is a big, physical team but was also pleased with the team's effort despite the tough result.

The General Amherst Bulldogs senior football team has dropped below the .500 mark as a result of their most recent game. The Bulldogs' final home game of the 2019 WECSSAA Tier 1 West regular season ended up being a 21-0 loss to the Brennan Cardinals at the Libro Centre last Thursday night. The loss now puts General Amherst's record at 2-3 with one game remaining in the regular season. The Bulldogs had a chance to score in the first quarter but missed a field goal. The Cardinals scored a pair of second half drives, connecting on 34-yard and 72-yard touchdown passes to go up 14-0 at the half. Sr. Lady Gens cap off regular season with win over St. Joseph By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens closed off the regular season with a win and are now headed to the post-season. The Lady Gens knocked off the winless St. Joseph Lasers 36-7 last Thursday evening to finish the WECSSAA Tier 1 regular season 3-6. The Lady Gens had relatively balanced scoring as Brynlee Ammonite led the way with ten points while Emma Pillon scored nine. Madison Pillon scored six points while Dani Brindley and Allison Dufour each scored four. Jill Brush had three points. “The other team struggled all year,” said General Amherst head coach Dom Silvaggio. “We got off to a slow start. We missed a ton of open shots.” The Lady Gens led 6-0 after one quarter and expanded that to a 16-3 lead at the half, with St. Joseph's only points coming on a three-point shot as time expired. The Lady Gens were up 25-5 after three quarters. Silvaggio said the defense created some turnovers but noted he hoped they would be able to score in the 50's against St. Joseph. Offence has been difficult to come by at points this season. “That's been our bugaboo all year,” said Silvaggio. “When you miss layups, it's tough to live on the outside and try to get scoring.” Dufour said she was pleased with how they played. “I think we played as well as we could. We have to play our own game and not play theirs,” she said. “We General Amherst’s Emma Pillon has a shot attempt could have done better defensively.” during her team’s win over St. Joseph. The senior Dufour said they have to take their time offensively Lady Gens entered the WECSSAA tournament in order to make more of their shots. She added that with a victory. winning their final home game gives them confidence

General Amherst’s Brynlee Ammonite drives the lane during her team’s 36-7 win over St. Joseph last Thursday. Ammonite had ten points in the win. for this week when they enter the WECSSAA tournament. Playing Tier 1 pushed them this year, she added, as the team played a higher level of basketball. The WECSSAA tournament kicked off Monday afternoon at home against the Sandwich Sabres. The Lady Gens won that game by a final score of 60-25 to advance in the tournament. Regardless of the Lady Gens fortunes this week, they will still be in the WECSSAA “AA” playoffs next week.

On behalf of the Poppy Chair Allan Kinsey, I extend to you an invitation to support the annual Poppy Campaign. The Annual distribution of Poppies & Wreaths is the sole appeal by Royal Canadian Legions for the Benevolent Funds Branch. Poppy Funds are held in trust, to be used for emergency assistance to Veterans, their dependents and the children of deceased ex-service personnel. All money, collected by our branch, is spent in the Amherstburg area and used to assist our Veterans at our district hospital, the Parkwood Campus of Victoria Hospital, in London, Ontario. The Poppy Fund is the Legion’s way of remembering the debt owed, by all of us, to those who sacrificed so much on our behalf, that we might continue to enjoy the freedoms that we all too often take for granted. It is the Legion’s sincere belief, that all Canadians appreciate this annual opportunity to contribute in a special way to the payment of this debt. In addition to the Act of Remembrance, contributions to the Poppy Fund are tangible expressions of thanks, to the men and women who gave their lives, and also to those who became disabled while serving their country. Please notify our Legion Branch 157, by return mail or at rclbranch157@cogeco.net NO LATER THAN NOV. 8th ( ) Donation to Poppy Fund $ _____________ ( ) Remembrance Wreath $75.00 ______________ (quantity) A limited number of wreaths are available on a first come first served basis. Admirals pick up three of four points on the road By Ron Giofu

The Amherstburg Admirals played the first two games of a six-game road trip last week and got three of four points. The Admirals picked up a win and an overtime loss, the latter seeing the Admirals gain a single point. The most recent game for Amherstburg was Sunday night in Blenheim and saw the Admirals win 5-3. The two teams were tied after two periods with Cody Schneider scoring both Amherstburg goals in the middle frame – the second on a powerplay with about nine seconds left in the period. But it was Andrew Clark and Max Jones who scored 21 seconds apart with just over five minutes left in the third period to put Amherstburg in front for good. Josh Talerico scored an empty net goal with 1:29 left in the third period. Seth Henderson brought Blenheim to within two just seconds after Talerico's goal but the Blades could get no further. Derek Hueni and Alex Cunningham also scored for Blenheim.

Amherstburg outshot Blenheim 37-25 on the night. The Admirals' week started last Wednesday night with a trip to Wheatley. Amherstburg had leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 in the game but it was Jordan Paquette who scored 2:30 into overtime to give the Sharks the 5-4 win. Kyle Meloche scored in the first period for the Admirals while Jaxon Boucher and Bryce McGregor had second period goals, McGregor's goal being on the powerplay. Team captain Broden Meloche had a third period goal for Amherstburg. Amherstburg goalie stopped 26 of 31 shots he faced in Wheatley while the Admirals fired 26 shots at Wheatley goalie Kyle Metson. Lucas Poisson had two goals for the Sharks while Jace Leach and Brett Enns had the others. The Admirals six-game road trip continues this week, with three straight games on consecutive nights. Amherstburg plays in Dresden Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before travelling to Mooretown for a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday. The Admirals then return to

Mane St. Market organizer pleased with first attempt

By Ron Giofu

A small business owner on Murray St. is pleased with her first attempt at creating a market-type event. Maria Goggin, owner of Maria’s Mane St. Cutoff, held her first “Mane St. Market” recently and is happy with how it went. Seven small

businesses took part – Work N’ Torn, Frank N’ Polk, November’s Eve Jewellery, Amanda’s Beeswax Food Wrap, the Towne Shoppe, Happier Camper and On the Glow – and Goggin says she hopes to have similar events in the future. “I thought it would be nice to promote some local busi-

nesses and have a fall-time market in my salon,” said Goggin. “If it goes well, I’d like to do one once every season to promote small businesses and get people to come out. I think it’s good for Amherstburg and good for our small town.” Goggin said it was also a chance to come out, have a

bite to eat and “hang out” in the downtown core. The businesses she highlighted sell and produce their own products, she said. Goggin added that most of the businesses, including herself, are run by young people and she wanted to highlight that as well

By Ashley Gholampoor Local resident Teena Duchesne said she has been a psychic and medium her whole life. Duchesne and the president of the Friends of Fort Malden, Mark Feltoe, helped put together a paranormal investigation at one of Amherstburg’s oldest historic site. The first night of “Spirits of Fort Malden” was held last Thursday. “The Fort has been on my bucket list for years,” said Duchesne. “It is a dream come true, Amherstburg is very active, almost like a paranormal playland. We hope to catch something tonight of course, looking back at the footage your mind definitely plays tricks on you.” Duchesne said she is doing the investigation to not only cross one place off of her bucket list, but to also raise money for the Friends of Fort Malden. She has been volunteering to help other historical sites as well, such as the Heritage Village. “It can be spooky but definitely fun to promote places like this,” said Duchesne. “History during the day and dark tourism at night. Dividing into two teams stationed in different places of the Fort, the guests will have the chance to participate with us using

paranormal equipment like our night vision cameras. It’s more for the experience.” To add to the experience, the fort was actually an insane asylum at one point in history. It was first established in 1859 and 260 patients were housed there. Mark Feltoe said it has been reported to hear whispers and voices throughout the fort. He said shadow people have also been reported. “I can feel the different energies, especially in the dark,” said Duchesne. The investigation was done at night and began at 7 p.m. Throughout the night, Duchesne and staff set up cameras facing certain directions where people have reported any activity. She said the most helpful piece of equipment she has is her tape recorder. It catches sounds or voices when she has regular conversations with people and does not realize until listening afterwards. The investigation finished around 9 p.m. and between 15 to 20 people came to experience or to support the Friends of Fort Malden. If anyone would look to donate to Fort Malden the website is friendsfortmalden. org/donate. The “Spirits of Fort Malden” return this Friday with tours at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person.

St. Peter’s ACHS College School brings in AMSA Fusion coach to help revamp school soccer program Special to the RTT

It has been since 2003 that St. Peter's ACHS College School won a regional soccer championship in Toronto. Students at St. Peter's ACHS had told their headmaster Peter Thyrring last June that they desperately wanted to win again in soccer. Fortunately Thyrring had to look no further than within the Amherstburg Minor Soccer Association (AMSA) to find the well-seasoned and

veteran 2010 Fusion travel coach Gino Savo. "I have coached against coach Savo," said Thyrring. "He is old school and an excellent soccer coach.” Savo brings to the table over 30 years of soccer experience and hopes to make the school's soccer team competitive again. St. Peter’s ACHS College School is located at 6101 County Road 20. For more information, visit www.achscanada.com.

Jr. Lady Gens regular season concludes, team awaits word on playoffs By Ron Giofu The WECSSAA Tier 1 basketball season is over for the General Amherst Lady Gens junior girls team and they now await what is next. The junior girls concluded the season last Thursday night with a 46-18 loss to the St. Joseph Lasers in a game played at General

Paige Desramaux passes the basketball during the second half of General Amherst’s loss to St. Joseph. The junior Lady Gens finished the WECSSAA Tier 1 regular season 0-8.

Amherst. The young Lady Gens team concluded the regular season 0-8 but now drop down into the WECSSAA “AA” playoff picture where they wait to see who and when they play again. The Lasers built an 11-4 lead after one quarter and it expanded to 22-6 at the half. St. Joseph's lead was 37-10 after three quarters. Despite the loss, the junior Lady Gens see progress in their game. Mya Mulder said they worked hard trying to get the ball and do what they could with it offensively. “The game was really fun,” she said. “It was definitely a tough game but we still tried our best.”

Playing at the WECSSAA Tier 1 level helped develop their game, she believed, and that “when we play schools our size, I think we'll be strong.” “I feel like everyone has improved,” added Mulder. “We are getting better and better.” The junior Lady Gens will spend this week practising before getting word on where they go and who they play in the WECSSAA “AA” playoffs. Mulder also quoted NBA star LeBron James after last Thursday night's game. “Don't be afraid of failure. This is the way to success.”

Bulldogs play well in loss to Essex By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Bulldogs senior boys volleyball team ended on a good note, though the final score might not indicate that. The Bulldogs finished the WECSSAA Tier 1 regular season with a 2-8 record after losing 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23 to first-place Essex last Tuesday evening. Despite the loss, General Amherst head coach Craig Lohnes was pleased with how his team played. “We did pretty well and we played good defense,” said Lohnes. Lohnes believed the Bulldogs hung tough against a strong Essex team and stayed with them throughout. The Bulldogs lost Mason Foreman to injury on the first point of the game and still managed to have a good match versus the Red Raiders. “The guys stepped up and had a pretty good performance against the first-place team,” said Lohnes. “It was a positive to have a competitive game.” Lohnes added the Bulldogs felt good about themselves after the match, believing they had played pretty well. “That’s something you want going into the playoffs,” he said. The Bulldogs’ goal at the start of the 2019 season was to continuously improve and Lohnes believed they are working towards that. Don’t Let “We’re progressing,” he said. “We’ve gotten better. We’re having ups and downs It Happen with our passing. Without passing, we don’t have much of a game, nor does any team. We depend on that.” to You The Bulldogs get a bit of a break as the playoffs start in early November. They will get a chance to take a break, get in some practice time and see who they meet Benjamin Bezzoubkin (12) of General Amherst up with. The War Amps The junior Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 5-5 record. They too ran spikes the ball over the net during General Amherst’s new “kids-toloss to Essex last Tuesday. The Bulldogs await who into a strong Essex team last Tuesday and were defeated in three straight sets. The kids” safety their playoff opponents will be. Red Raiders downed the junior Bulldogs 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18.

Citizens for Carnegie pressing ahead with library refresh plans

COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, October 30, 2019 - 23

Kicks & Giggles ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, this week may start off somewhat unbalanced. Work may be demanding more of you, and you’re finding it tough to even out the field. By midweek you’ll regain control. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Make the necessary changes in your life to get back on target, Taurus. These goals may run the gamut from fitness to career. Put the future in focus.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE Shannon Bailey, Cindy Lemieux and Helen Wilcox of the Citizens for Carnegie held a meeting at the Amherstburg Library to discuss future fundraising plans. While other members of the group couldn’t make it, the trio gathered ideas to help reach their $40,000 fundraising target. By Ron Giofu The group “Citizens for Carnegie” are pressing ahead with their plans for the refresh of the Amherstburg Library, and are confident they can hit their $40,000 fundraising target by year’s end. Committee members Shannon Bailey, Helen Wilcox and Cindy Lemieux discussed their plans at the Amherstburg Library and said they don’t plan on major renovations such as opening up walls, but want to add to what is already there. Such ideas include books, murals, better and increased technology such as computer terminals, better furniture, a revamped children’s area and a youth area. “We definitely need a tech upgrade,” said Bailey. “We definitely lack access to computer terminals. There’s lots of room for growth in tech.” The children’s area revamp that is proposed would also include additional privacy for mothers who brought their children and the teen area will be geared towards bringing in youth and making them want to check out the library and what the library has to offer. “We’re all moms with kids who are always at the library,” said Lemieux. The project is one of four being fundraised for by the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) and had reached 72 per cent of its $40,000 target. The Citizens for Carnegie formed in the summer and were chosen by the ACF shortly thereafter. Bailey said their group is independent and still fundraising on their own as well, including an upcoming draw at Maria’s Restaurant where people can purchase a square for $10 and, if they win, they will receive a $500 prize while the Citizens for Carnegie will receive $500. The draw at Maria’s Restaurant will be held Oct. 31. Bailey added the refresh can help showcase a historic building and if the library were to ever move to another location, the materials they

are fundraising for can come with them. The group believes the library is a community space and the feedback they have heard indicates people want the current library better utilized rather than move to a new location. The Citizens for Carnegie want to further develop the library as a gathering point accessible to all. “It really comes down to inclusiveness,” said Wilcox. “Everyone has a chance to gather at the same place with the same resources on hand.” The group believes the 106-year-old Carnegie library is “steeped in history but should not be stuck in the past” and are hoping to have work started in the new year. Wilcox noted it is the only Carnegie library left in operation in Essex County. Bailey said she has visited Essex County library branches around the county and gathered some ideas on what is needed in Amherstburg. Stops on the tour included Essex, Leamington, McGregor and LaSalle. She noted youth go to the library in Leamington and “to me, that’s cool.” “You make people want to do it themselves.” Bailey added they hope to work with more restaurants and businesses to raise funds, noting she is “big on collaboration.” “We’ll definitely have more little pop-up (fundraisers) to meet our target,” said Bailey. “This is a community building project. This doesn’t benefit any one person.” Other projects being supported by the ACF include the Beaudoin Park upgrades, a single-track cycling trail at Holiday Beach Conservation Area and a mentorship program and speaker series offered by the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 You may be inspired to do something creative but don’t know where to focus your attention just yet, Gemini. Look to Sagittarius as a good source of inspiration. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, this week you may be unable to keep everything as organized as you would like. Take a cue from someone you know is always organized. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Take control of a situation that comes to light this week, Leo. No one seems willing or able to grab the reins, but you can be an excellent leader in this situation. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Expand your social circles and you may meet some influential people, Virgo. This can help spread the word about your stellar reputation and open doors to opportunities. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, after you get through an exciting event, life may slow down for a little while. But you can find plenty of ways to infuse some excitement into your days. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 You cannot seem to focus your attention on one thing for more than a few minutes, Scorpio. Random thoughts, however distracting, can inspire new ideas.
