Fire Prevention Week observed in Amherstburg By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Fire Department is stepping up again this year to try and keep the community safe. Fire Prevention Week is happening this week and the town's fire department got things rolling Monday night with open houses at all three stations. Fire clerk Dan Monk said between the open houses and trips to local schools this week, they hope to pass along fire safety tips to about 10 per cent of the town's population, or about 2,200 people. “This year's theme is 'Not All Heroes Wear Capes. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” said Monk. Monk said they are urging people to map out how they would get out of their homes and practice it, with people recommended to have at least two possible escape routes in case of a fire or another emergency. “We're hoping to see a few hundred people across the three fire halls,” Monk said Monday evening at Station 1. The Amherstburg Fire Department's outreach into the schools will see firefighters visit seven elementary schools this week with the primary focus being children in grades JK-3.
“We're really trying to get out to the public as much as we can and ask, as a fire department, that they be prepared in case of a fire,” said Monk. The open houses and the entire Fire Prevention Week initiative was to bring awareness of fire safety but Monk stated the public could see what the fire department does and the equipment they have and provide feedback. “These are the services you have as a taxpayer and this is how you can help,” he said. Attendance was strong at Station 1 in the town's downtown core, said Monk, adding there were similar reports at Station 2 on Middle Side Road and Station 3 in Malden Centre. “You can't ask for better weather than this,” said Monk. “It's absolutely beautiful.” While open houses have been scattered throughout the week in previous years with open houses being on different nights at the three stations, it was all put on one night this year as each of the three stations opened its doors Monday evening. Monk said that made the event easier to advertise as it is a single message of when they can attend an open house. The Amherstburg Fire Department

Monk added. “We're going to be more active online to execute these types of events,” he said.

A local school remembered the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools by holding “Orange Shirt Day” last week. St. Joseph School in River Canard observed the event last Monday with students in all grades gathering outside in front of the school and planting signs with messages to remember the children who were taken from their families. “We are telling everyone who they were and how much the First Nations people mean to us,” said student Nora Farachi. “They would get strapped and disciplined by nuns and other teachers.” Other students such as Josh Lepain, Kaiden Durham, Luca Angelini and

However, a Sunday night tentative deal kept everything open. The tentative deal also stopped work-torule action and must be ratified by the union's 109 bargaining units. Specific details haven't been

We will continue to negotiate in good faith to ensure students in this province remain in class.” “All the parties worked hard together at the table to reach a fair and responsible agreement that will keep students in the classroom,” said Ontario Public School Boards Association President Cathy Abraham. “Education workers play an important role in our schools, and this agreement is a recognition that we value the contribution they make to the educational experience of our students every day.” The details of the agreement remain confidential until ratified by all parties. CUPE has agreed to stop all job action while awaiting ratification of the deal, the OPSBA stated, adding they will continue to negotiate with other unions representing teachers and education workers, with the best interests of students in mind.

Rev. John Bustard of Amherstburg Community Church (left) and financial planner Phil Medler are teaming to provide financial planning seminars in the community. Medler will be presenting the “Smart Money, Smart Kids” lessons he learned in Nashville from financial coach and author Dave Ramsey. By Ron Giofu A local church and a local financial planner are teaming up to assist families who may be suffering a financial crunch. Amherstburg Community Church and retired financial planner Phil Medler will be co-hosting “Smart Money, Smart Kids” with the six-week, Wednesday night classes to actually be held at Amherstburg Community Services, located at 179 Victoria St. S. “We're really trying to recognize the needs in our community and the tools we have to meet them,” explained Rev. John Bustard. Rev. Bustard said the ACC is aware of families' needs and try to have different programs to meet them. Medler spent 23 years as a financial planner before retiring eight years ago. He went to Nashville to learn the “Smart Money, Smart Kids” program and is bringing that to Amherstburg. He was trained by financial coach and author Dave Ramsey. “The job of a financial planner is helping people with tomorrow,” said Medler. “A lot of people are living paycheque to paycheque. The question is how do I help people today?” Rev. Bustard said financial strain and stress are the reasons many marriages break up and that is one of the reasons ACC is involved as they want to ease the stress on families. It is a crisis that is hitting as many as seven to eight homes out of ten in Amherstburg, Rev. Bustard stated. “This is bringing stability to homes and relationships,” he said of the program. “People say they have to keep up with the Joneses,” said Medler. “The reality is the Joneses are broke.” Medler said he hears from people about why financial planning is not taught more thoroughly in the school system and he said “Smart Money, Smart Kids” can help equip parents to teach their own children. He added he recently taught this course at a conference in northern Ontario. “It's going to be once a week for six weeks,” he said. The courses start Oct. 9 and cost $140 per household. For more information, contact Medler at 519-736-8111 or Amherstburg Community Church at 519-736-5644. “We care about our community. We really do,” added Rev. Bustard. “This is about making a difference in Amherstburg.”

PPC leader visits the area, accompanied by protests
RTT PHOTOS BY RON GIOFU
People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier smiles as he speaks to a rally of almost 200 people last Monday night at the Ciociaro Club. The local PPC candidate is Bill Capes. By Ron Giofu Stating that people are “fed up with traditional politics,” the leader of the People's Party of Canada (PPC) was in the area last week to promote his party's cause and its candidates. Maxime Bernier and his supporters were greeted by protesters outside the Ciociaro Club last Monday night. Nearly 200 supporters came inside the club and greeted their leader with cheers and enthusiasm with Bernier elaborating on what he says the party stands for. Bernier said they want a “fairer” tax system, including
“Blessing of the Animals” service
a flat tax of ten per cent on businesses. “If a corporation is profitable, it doesn't need corporate welfare,” he said. Believing that it is “easy to balance the budget,” Bernier pointed to the 1990's when he said then-Prime Ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin converted a $30 billion deficit to a $3 billion surplus in two years. Bernier believed he could do it too, starting with cutting funding to the CBC, something that was greeted with cheers by his supporters. The PPC leader said he wants the CBC to be independent from the government. “If they are so good, like PBS in the United States, people will donate money,” he said. Cutting back on “corporate welfare” as well as foreign aid was championed by Bernier, He criticized $2.3 billion being sent to African countries to fight climate change yet Indigenous people on reserves have difficulty accessing clean water. He said the federal government “needs to bring that money back to Canada to help Canadians first.” Relating to climate change, Bernier said “yes the climate is changing like always and it will always change” and said the carbon tax will be a huge cost for Canadians. “What I'm saying to (teenage climate activist) Greta (Thunberg) and all the radical left is, there is no climate emergency,” said Bernier to large cheers. Bernier said policies must be built on reason and not fear and believed building pipelines with 2019 technology is safer for the environment and the people. Bernier believed his party is growing well across Canada and is gaining support. “The more we speak about something, the more support we have,” he said, adding “we are putting the people first and our country first.” Criticized for his immigration stance, Bernier said the PPC is not anti-immigration but that they want fewer immigrants and want those who share Canadian values. “Just read our policies,” he said. “We are promoting

Canadian values.” The PPC leader also took aim at the media, stating crowd sizes at his rallies don't get the same level of coverage as opposition party rallies. In fact, he claimed his party doesn't get the same level of coverage overall. “Yes, I'm mad about the mainstream media,” said Bernier. “They don't cover us.” Bernier added they use social media because of their belief of a lack of coverage. Bill Capes is the PPC's candidate in the Essex riding and joined other local candidates at the rally. Over 20 people gathered outside the Ciociaro Club protesting Bernier's visit. Spokesperson Bree Arbor slammed Bernier as well as the venue for hosting the rally. “We don’t appreciate the Ciociaro Club hosting Maxime Bernier. We don’t appreciate these people in our community basically openly endorsing what we find to be incredibly hateful, racist, misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic views,” Arbor stated. “We want to show that this is unacceptable. It’s the whole right-wing populous movement that is represented by this party, by people who want to shift even further to the right of our already far right-wing parties.” Arbor said they were asked to leave but they spoke to the OPP and were allowed to stay. Arbor added they had people of all ages protesting and they had a “right to be here.” OPEN THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

Fr. Bill Strang blesses a dog at Christ Anglican Church in Amherstburg. Fr. Strang hosted a “Blessing of the Animals” day. By Jonathan Martin Amherstburg’s most devout animals went to mass Sunday at Christ Anglican Church. After reading an abridged version of the Christian creation story, Fr. Bill Strang walked between the pews and blessed his furry parishioners. Fr. Strang has been holding an annual “Blessing of the Animals” service for around 15 years. He said that, by now, some of the animals recognize him. They’re a big part of many of his parishioners’ lives, so he thinks it’s appropriate to involve them in the life of the church. “For many people, pets are like children; a real part of the family,” Fr. Strang said over the sound of barking dogs and mewing cats. “We are called to care for all Creation. St. Francis of Assisi loved animals and today we’re celebrating his day.” Around 20 quadrupedal Christians turned out for the service, none of which knew the words to the hymns. Many tried to sing along anyways, though.

By Ron Giofu The Town of Amherstburg has proclaimed October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a local resident is teaming with an area hospital to take the cause further. Amherstburg resident Alison Baldwin appeared before town council at the Sept. 23 meeting to promote her initiative “Kickin’ Cancer to the Curb” and was joined by Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation director of philanthropy Gisele Seguin and manager of philanthropy Cristina Naccarato. Baldwin said she has friends who have been impacted by breast cancer and said that was a driving force behind her efforts. Baldwin and her group of volunteers will be at the Libro Centre raising money for a 3-D mammography machine that will be installed at Windsor Regional Hospital. Baldwin noted “this touches everyone,” adding that she had her
mother-in-law and an aunt also battle the disease. Seguin pointed out the new 3D mammography machine will produce better imaging and be able to detect breast cancer faster. It will also allow for treatment times to be reduced, she said. Naccarato also noted there are several breast cancer fundraisers around the area, including efforts at Shoppers Drug Mart locations. The Amherstburg Shoppers Drug Mart is involved with the fundraising efforts. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche, filling in for the vacationing Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, presented the delegation a certificate acknowledging October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Amherstburg. He also got the donations rolling by personally pledging $50 to the cause. People can donate or pick up pledge sheets Oct. 19-20 by visiting their table at the Libro Centre. Candidates in Essex riding square off in debate sponsored by Windsor-Essex chamber By Ron Giofu
Candidates in the federal Essex riding squared off last week in a debate and voters got to see where they stood on the issues. NDP incumbent Tracey Ramsey, Conservative candidate Chris Lewis, Audrey Festeryga of the Liberal Party and Green Party candidate Jen Alderson squared off in a debate at the Hellenic Cultural Centre in Windsor that was also televised by YourTV. Bill Capes, the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada, was not a participant. On the issue of reducing tax burdens, Alderson said corporate taxes are an issue and that the wealthiest taxpayers aren’t paying enough. She believes there are tax loopholes that need to be addressed as well. Lewis touted such Conservative initiatives as a universal tax cut that he said will save people $850 per year, scrap the “Trudeau carbon tax” and reduce GST on home heating bills. He said he understands the struggles Canadians are facing each day. Festeryga said Canadians chose growth in 2015 and got it. She said Liberals raised taxes on the top one per cent and reduced small business taxes, adding “it’s the lowest business tax in the G7.” Ramsey believes the tax system does a disservice to Canadians and businesses and said Canadians need to take better care of each other with a tax system that is more fair to the average person. She added that
the ability to put money offshore also needs to be addressed. Regarding climate change, Lewis said his party wants to take a “science-based approach” and that it is a much larger issue than for just Canada. “We have a plan and we are proud of it,” said Lewis. Festeryga countered that “(leader) Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives don’t have a plan of action” and argued the Liberals have done more in the battle against climate change than anyone else. She said her party are “stepping up” while others want to take a step back. Liberals and Conservative targets are “too weak” regarding climate change, Ramsey stated, and said the NDP will create sustainable jobs in the process. She said there is a need to deal with the climate emergency and that New Democrats have “an ambitious” climate plan. Alderson stated Liberals have ignored their promises on climate change and accused Conservatives of “ignoring the science behind climate change.” She also said the NDP have taken some of their talking points from the Green Party. On the issue of farming, Festeryga noted “agriculture is very, very important” to the area and touted her own family’s history in the farming industry. She noted the legalization of cannabis and said her office heard from a young man who had the best job he ever received thanks to the cannabis industry.
Ramsey said the agricultural industry needs more support from the federal government and said supply management has been “sold out” in trade agreements. She also stated farmers need high-speed broadband internet to conduct their businesses. Alderson touted sustainable farming and the reduction in water use. She added cannabis can be grown more outside and done in a more sustainable way. “Being a bonafide farmer, I understand the struggles,” said Lewis. He said his party would help farmers by removing the carbon tax, adding better farming policies would assist growers sell their products around the world. Gun control was also raised with Ramsey noting “we want to protect farmers and we want to protect hunters,” though noted larger municipalities want certain types of guns banned. Alderson called for more regulations on handguns and assault weapons but also noted hunting should not be impacted. Lewis said he is a hunter and a conservationist and he vowed to “stand and will always stand with firearm owners.” Festeryga accused Conservatives of wanting to weaken gun laws while the Liberals want to make them stronger. What to do to care for seniors was also addressed by the four candidates. Alderson called for seniors to be able to stay within their own homes and to end the stigma around mental health while Lewis stated Scheer has a plan to cut taxes, remove
GST from home heating bills and to cut the carbon tax. Festeryga said her party increased GIS payments, increased Old Age Security (OAS) and enhanced survivor benefits. Ramsey said some seniors are experiencing homelessness and said her party wants to offer a rental subsidy to lift seniors out of poverty. She added pensions are not a gift, but something they have paid into. She also promoted her party’s pharmacare platform. In closing statements, Festeryga said people are “wavering in their support of the NDP and they want effective representation in Ottawa” and said the “Progressive Conservatives of the past are not the Conservatives of today.” She said people are appreciating the Liberals’ approach and said “Liberal spending is an investment in the future.” Ramsey, first elected in 2015, said “I know the job” and is confident in her ability to represent the riding. She said she has a proven track record with working people and businesses. “Who is going to fight for you? I am,” she said. Alderson told the audience “we can make history. We can make positive change.” Lewis asked for the public’s support as he said he wants to “leave the world a better place than I found it.” “I am excited to work hard and bring resources back to (the riding of) Essex,” he said.

Dirndl-wearing runners sprint to the finish line in the Fort .5 Fun Run, an Oktoberfest-themed fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society’s local programming at the Fort Fun Centre in Amherstburg last Sunday. and sipping on wine, while a kilted violinist belted out classical pieces over the bustle. Bauer and Monin, along with the gallery’s exhibit committee, planned out every detail. Red clown noses greeted the gallery’s patrons with a sign asking them to take selfies for posting to social media. Bauer and Monin said the exhibit’s marketing has been ongoing for more than six months. The two women have worked together before. In fact, this is the third time they’ve shared gallery walls, Bauer said.

“Having a show each year is a business decision,” said Bauer. “We’ve already booked Mackenzie Hall (in Windsor) for next year. Having these bookings forces you to work and be productive.” Lately, she’s been producing pieces that feature glass. Marbles have become something of a signature of hers. “I find them interesting and challenging,” she said. “I have to keep finding new ways to push myself if I’m going to keep improving.” Bauer said she paints 40 hours each week. For her, art has been a full-time career since she retired from nursing in 2013. Monin got her start in visual arts when she discovered Microsoft Paint decades ago. “My husband and I worked in real estate,” she said. “We’d have these photos of the houses we were trying to sell. I’d import them into the program, edit them and my husband would give them to the new homeowners as a housewarming present.” Today, Monin prefers Adobe Photoshop. Her subjects undergo a digital transformation, eventually becoming something that resembles a watercolour painting. The artists’ work will hang in the Gibson Art Gallery, located at 140 Richmond Street, until Oct. 20.

Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment selected to try out new vehicle
By Ron Giofu The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment has been selected to test out a new police vehicle. The local detachment is the only ones within the Windsor Police Service to have a 2019 Dodge Durango at its disposal and took delivery of the vehicle last Friday. Staff Sgt. Dave DeLuca said Amherstburg gets first crack at the vehicle due to the number of kilometres local officers put on the vehicle in town. “We’re going to evaluate it,” said DeLuca. Depending on how the vehicle performs, more could be purchased for the Windsor Police Service. If it doesn’t pass the test, a different kind of vehicle will be sought. DeLuca had a good first impression of the vehicle, stating there is a lot more room and versatility. Not only can police use the vehicles more
effectively if they have to leave the roadway, DeLuca indicated there is more storage space for equipment and the officers themselves. “This is much more capable of carrying a lot of equipment than a typical cruiser,” DeLuca said of the Durango. Const. Fred Adair, the community services officer with the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment, noted the vehicle has the same safety features as a cruiser and echoed the need for additional room for equipment. “We’re looking for more space,” he said. DeLuca pointed out the Dodge Durango is equipped with the same “police package” as a cruiser. “I’ve driven it and it drives awesome,” the staff sergeant said. “Amherstburg is lucky to be the test pilot for it.” The Dodge Durango is

Bulldogs topple St. Anne Saints 18-6 in penalty-filled WECSSAA football game General Amherst’s offense started slowly in the cool, windy conditions. Their defense and special teams pinned the Saints deep in St. Anne territory for much of the first half but failed to score a touchdown in the opening half. The Bulldogs settled for a safety in the first quarter when St. Anne was backed up on their own one-yard line on third down and their quarterback kneeled in the end zone to concede the two points in an attempt to improve their field position. Another General Amherst drive stalled on the one-yard line in the first quarter and the Bulldogs opted for an 11-yard field goal in the second quarter to put themselves up 5-0. The Saints connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter to give themselves a 6-5 lead at the half. The Bulldogs finally found the end
By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Bulldogs senior football team is 2-0 in WECSSAA Tier 1 West division after picking up a win last Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs knocked off the visiting St. Anne Saints 18-6 in a lengthy, penalty-filled game at Centennial Park. The game was delayed in the third quarter after the officials had to sort out penalties after a skirmish that included the ejection of a St. Anne player and saw General Amherst coaches go on the field to pull their players away from the fray. Through it all, General Amherst head coach John Rudak said his players showed restraint and discipline and actually got better from it. “We were able to be successful,” said Rudak. “It may have picked up the intensity level for us.”

penalty while a 95-yard punt return by St. Anne was also called back due to a flag. Howson would eventually find the end zone, however, as he ran one in from six yards out in the fourth quarter. “It went well,” Howson said of the game. “The defense played great and the offense played great. It was a good game all around. We had good calls from the coaches.”

Successful week on the road for Admirals as team wins twice
“definitely not a good day for passing” but “you still have to put the ball in the air in order to loosen the defense.” “If the wind was not a factor, we definitely would have passed better,” said Rudak. “The weather conditions were not conducive to our game.” The Bulldogs wore the Saints down, Rudak believed, thanks in part to the Saints suffering several By Ron Giofu injuries. The teams were evenly matched, Rudak added. The Amherstburg Admirals went on the road twice The next game for over the past week, but came out on top both times. Josh Talerico picked PM up two assists for Amherstburg while goalie Nick Bolton stopped 28 of 30 Blenheim shots. The Admirals fired 42 shots on Blenheim goalie Chris Dewulf in Sunday night's Jr. C hockey game. The Admirals' first game of the week was a nail biter, but they came out on top 187 MEADOWVIEW AVE. 4-3 in overtime in Petrolia in Beautiful Historical Amherstburg last Thursday night. Jr. Lady Gens still a work in progress after a pair of home court losses

By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens continue to seek improvement in junior girls basketball action, but they haven’t secured their first victory yet. The Lady Gens suffered a pair of defeats last week with the most recent coming last Thursday evening. General Amherst hosted the St. Anne Saints, one of two teams undefeated in WECSSAA Tier 1 play, and while they were down 31-0 at halftime, they didn’t give up with the final score being 49-8. “We fought hard,” said Kayla Renaud after the game. “We scored as much as we could.” Mya Mulder added that both teams fought hard and she believed the junior Lady Gens are learning more and more as the season progresses. She added the coaches – Greg Scott and Ben Pelger – are doing a good job showing the players what they need to do. “We’re definitely learning from our mistakes,” said Renaud. “We tried our best and fought hard.” The junior Lady Gens were in action last Tuesday afternoon versus the other undefeated WECSSAA Tier 1 team, the Holy Names Knights. Holy Names won 47-9. Paige Desramaux believed the Lady Gens could have played better defensively as Holy Names were setting up and running their offense against them. “I think we’re improving game-after-game,” said Desramaux. “We need to work on our defense.” Desramaux said they also need to work on their “shell drill,” something they work on in practice and want to bring into games. The Lady Gens play twice on the road this week. The first game was in Kingsville last night after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. The second is Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. at Sandwich.

THANK YOU
Thank you!
The family of the late Norman Potter would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone for their love and support during Norman’s illness and passing. Friends and family travelled to Norman’s service from near and far to show their respect, tell us great stories about him, and to provide us with some much-needed hugs. Thank you to Norman’s friends, Gord and John, who spoke from their hearts during his Celebration of Life and to Kevin Marchant who read tributes from Kevin’s family, Norman’s loving spouse Patricia and daughter, Sharon. We are also grateful to the Families First Funeral Home and celebrant Kelly Meloche for everything they did to make the Celebration of Norman’s Life touching and memorable. The room was beautifully prepared with mementoes and photographs that highlighted Kelly’s captivating telling of Norman’s great life story. Thank you to Abbey Slack-Neves for sharing her beautiful singing talent to honour Norman. Families First arranged for Capri to cater the delicious food catered after the service. Finally, the cards, donations to our chosen charities, the floral arrangements, food and fruit baskets, telephone calls, desserts, help with accommodations for our out of town guests and sympathy gifts will never be forgotten by any of us. ~ Much love and appreciation The Potter and Young Families

Skate Amherstburg to host “Glide So Seniors Can Ride skate-a-thon
With autumn returning, children are back on the ice, and some will be skating for a cause in the coming weeks. Skate Amherstburg will host a skate-a-thon Oct. 19 to fundraise on behalf of Amherstburg Community Services (ACS), a local charity organization that serves Amherstburg, LaSalle, Harrow & McGregor. The “Glide So Seniors Can Ride skate-a-thon will look to raise $10,000 toward the purchase of a multi-use vehicle for ACS according to Lynn Fox, President of Skate Amherstburg. “We know ACS needs the help and we thought this was a great way, not just to give back, but to help our skaters learn about their social responsibilities, Fox said.  “We’re excited to see how the community gets behind us on this to help us reach our goal. After successfully raising enough money to purchase an accessible van last year, ACS is looking to round out its fleet for the long term and replace the last of their aging mini-vans, both now over ten-years-old. “The vehicle we’re looking to purchase will help reduce our costs while ensuring that adults with mobility barriers and seniors in our region have a safe, reliable ride to the places they need to go, Kathy DiBartolomeo, executive director at ACS, explained.  “We’re thrilled to see Skate Amherstburg step up to help us in such a big way and to see their young skaters take the lead on something that will help so many people. DiBartolomeo says the vehicle will also be used to transport their Meals on Wheels, made fresh every morning in Amherstburg, to drop-off points in Harrow and LaSalle where they are given to volunteers who deliver to residents in those towns. The Skate-a-Thon will take place Oct. 19 from noon – 1 p.m. on the Movati Rink at the Libro Credit Union Centre in Amherstburg. Skate Amherstburg members will be collecting pledges from now until that date.  Anyone interested in pledging toward the event, or business looking to sponsor the event can contact Lynn Fox at 519-566-1574. Anyone looking to donate directly to ACS can visit www.amhestburg-cs.com.

Sr. Lady Gens drop a pair of games against tough opponents By Ron Giofu
The General Amherst Lady Gens played some tough opponents last week in WECSSAA Tier 1 senior girls basketball action but couldn’t quite get over the hump in either game. However, that isn’t to say there weren’t bright spots

in both games. The most recent game was a 42-32 loss to the St. Anne Saints. The Lady Gens fought hard against a talented St. Anne team, even outscoring them 18-17 in the second half, but were unable to overcome a slow start. “That was a great game to watch,” said General Amherst head coach Dom Silvaggio. “When you hold a team like that to 42 points, you can’t ask for anything more.” There was a four-minute stretch in the third quarter that the Lady Gens became lackadaisical but otherwise, Silvaggio was pleased with how the Lady Gens played. “I was happy with their intensity,” he said. “It was a fast paced game. They stayed right with them.” The Lady Gens’ scoring woes continued in this game as there were moments where they missed easy layups and didn’t make shots they make in practice. Silvaggio wondered if they feel too anxious when they are in game situations and try to rush their shots. Defensively though, the Lady Gens played well. “We’ve got to find ways to get more offense,” said Silvaggio. Lexi Dodds led General Amherst in scoring against St. Anne with 16 points while Emma Pillon and Abbie Drouillard each had four points. Dani Brindley scored three points while Madi Pillon had two. “I thought we played really, really good defensively,” said Emma. “Our intensity was really good.” Emma thought they played well offensively but “we can’t be shy with the basketball” and doing a better job of making shots will bring them closer in games. “I thought we played really well but we fell short at the end,” she said. “I think we need to work on being more intense on offense like we are on defense. We can’t be afraid of losing the ball. We have to drive to the basket when we have a chance.” The offense stalled at points last Tuesday evening, also

General Amherst’s Emma Pillon (white jersey, centre) battles for the ball in the second half of her team’s game against Holy Names. The visitors outscored the Lady Gens by four points. at General Amherst, against the visiting Holy Names Knights. The Lady Gens lost by four points – 30-26 – which was the same differential as the halftime score (18-14). However, a scoreless third quarter certainly didn’t help the Lady Gens’ cause. “We couldn’t hit our shots and the other thing is, we weren’t running our offense,” said Silvaggio. The free throw shooting was “not spectacular” either but Silvaggio added “I loved our defensive intensity but it was somewhat frustrating watching them fail to run an offense.” When General Amherst got open looks, they didn’t hit the shots and that proved costly as well. “When we give up 30 points, that should be good enough to win a game. Unfortunately, we didn’t score,” he said. Holy Names played tough and aggressive, Silvaggio added. The Lady Gens are on the road twice this week. They had a key game against a fellow “AA”-sized school Tuesday in Kingsville after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. They head to LaSalle Thursday afternoon for a 4 p.m. game against the Sandwich Sabres.
