Renovations celebrated at “Ribs & Ragtime” Strong storm causes damage in Amherstburg Trees, vehicles, hydro lines and more damaged By Ron Giofu
It didn’t last long, but the storm Friday evening caused significant damage while it lasted. The storm came in and damaged trees, buildings, homes, vehicles and anything else in its path as it cut across the town, with many properties in the former Malden Township suffering damage in one form or another. The Amherstburg Fire Department and the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment were kept busy with calls, though the fire department stated they “responded to multiple calls for service. River Lights Winter Festival receives $250,000 Canadian Experience Fund grant
Our Place Ladies Fashions
The River Lights Winter Festival received a $250,000 Canadian Experience Fund grant through FedDev Ontario. The money will be used for underground infrastructure, additional marketing and new displays. By Ron Giofu The River Lights Winter Festival was given a significant financial boost thanks to FedDev Ontario. The annual winter event, which kicks off Nov. 16, received a $250,000 Canadian Experience Fund grant through FedDev Ontario, with that money to have multiple uses. The major use the money will go towards will be underground infrastructure. Manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota said when her department got wind of the funding application, they contacted their Ministry of Tourism representative and spoke about how the money should be spent and where to put it in terms of economic development. “Amherstburg has great attractions and events in the summer but how could we extend our visitor stays and spending to go beyond the peak season,” she said. “One of the things the grant is going to do is extend activities. We are looking at a new community event downtown, perhaps in February, to bring more residents and visitors to the downtown.” Rota said they plan to work with the business community to “create new experiences” and “we’re exploring some ideas right now.” However, roughly 70 per cent of the $250,000 is for infrastructure and upgrades and a lot of that will be underground to improve electrical capacity in Toddy Jones Park and King’s Navy Yard Park and to improve park accessibility, with Rota stating a lot of the latter has to do with eliminating cords and removing potential trip hazards. “It’s not only for River Lights,” Rota said of the infrastructure improvements. “It will benefit the entire parks system for all festivals and events.” Some of the money will be used for additional displays as well, she added, but cautioned that not everything will be seen when River Lights opens Nov. 16. Work will be done in stages throughout the festival with more being added into the new year in the festival’s extended season. “It’s definitely a work in progress,” she said. “We have until March 2020 to get the work done. People will see things happening in stages throughout the winter.” River Lights will also explore new markets and pursue new demographics, with Rota stating they will do additional marketing for the LGBTQ+ and U.S. markets. “We’ve never quite had the funds to explore new markets,” said Rota. “This money will help us with that.” Rota added that usually grants are required to have matching funding, but said this grant does not. She credited the volunteer committee that started River Lights and continue to help out for their efforts in having the festival grow as it has. “Amherstburg is a uniquely walkable community. We are anchored with two signature parks and a host of amazing businesses in between. We want people to come out, visit our businesses, participate in outdoor, winter activities and enjoy everything Amherstburg has to offer not only in the summer

Amherstburg Farmers Market
I am very worried about our Amherstburg farmers market. If we don’t support the merchants they will lose interest in downtown Amherstburg and they will go and negotiate something somewhere else. We can’t let this happen! I grew up in a town of 750 people in a county of 48,000. The village market buzzes every Saturday morning. Conversely, Amherstburg is a community of over 20,000 people in a county of 180,000. But our market is very quiet. So what can we do to support it and make it better? -First, go buy something at the market! -A farmers market is a tourist attraction. Could we post some banners and signs on major roads leading into town? -Vendors find it very expensive given the low customer volume. -Bring in a food truck or two. This will attract people to the market. They come for a sandwich and they buy a quilt and some
fresh produce. This will not take business away from the restaurants in town. Anyone who wants a “sit-down” lunch and a glass of wine will go to a restaurant and get one. Anyone who wants to grab a sandwich from a food truck wouldn’t be going to a restaurant anyway. Besides, other than Caffeine & Co, no one is open before noon. -Next year, could we consider supplying attractive awnings/tents, under which the vendors can display their products? It would draw attention to the market. I’ve seen some great ones in other markets. It may be easier to go to the supermarket but it’s more fun to go to the market. Let’s not stand by and watch our market disappear. Please support your market – go buy something! -David Languedoc & Dorothy Kryworuchko Previously of The Dalhousie Bistro Amherstburg
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Town council encouraged to shelve lobbyist registry report The lobbyist registry report placed in front of town council Sept. 9 appears to me to be an unnecessary proposal which has raised unwanted negativities in our community. Admittedly rushed to press to fit into the regular agenda, this report contains less than a sufficient rationale to have convinced council and garner public support. In fact, it appears to have done exactly the opposite. This report has emerged without any council request for such a document, and no prior reports outlining glaring local abuses. As compared to most administrative reports requesting council’s attention, it has not received any senior staff review. My first area of concern is just how such a bylaw proposal can enhance the quality of local democracy. It is easy to use the term “transparency,” but much more difficult to define and craft into bylaw content. There is no case history of shortfalls cited, and no list of measureable outcomes from any other Ontario jurisdiction.
Another problematic area relates to the bureaucratic and administrative side of the registry concept. While the hourly fee of an Integrity Commissioner is given ($300) and proposed to be slotted into the 2020 budget, the day-to-day management of accessible forms, and the recorded contacts with either lobbyists or councillors, is not described. The report remains silent on the exact nature of bureaucratic expansion of town hall administration, and its costs. I choose to believe that our elected council members have the moral fibre to work for the public interest and good, and encourage citizens to participate in public dialogue, and even offer criticisms when required. This is important in creating a vibrant and healthy community. I am not convinced this report has true value and merit for our community. I encourage council to do its due diligence and ultimately shelve this report. —Paul Hertel Amherstburg

Town to pursue CWATS funding for paved shoulders on section of Alma St. By Ron Giofu The Town of Amherstburg will be making application for county funding under the County-Wide Active Transportation System (CWATS) program for paved shoulders on a portion of Alma St. The 1.2-kilometre stretch the town wishes to install paved shoulders on goes from Fryer St. to Meloche Road. If approved under the 60-40 funding split with CWATS, the town would fund $426,000 of the $710,000 project while the County of Essex would kick in $284,000. In his report to town council, manager of engineering Todd Hewitt noted the 2019 budget includes $45,000 for engineering design of the paved shoulders along that stretch of Alma St. He also pointed out the town received $97,259.51 under the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling (OMCC) program. Eligible works must be completed by the end of 2020 to utilize the OMCC funding, he noted. “These paved shoulders would provide an accessible and safe means of active transportation for residents and facility users. This segment is a key component in linking a number of the town’s multi-use trails and other active
transportation facilities,” Hewitt wrote in his report. “These paved shoulders would provide a link to the following facilities: bike lanes and multi-use trail along Meloche Road from Lowes Sideroad to Fryer Street. These facilities connect to the Libro Centre; trail along the east side of Thomas Road that connects to the Cypher Systems Greenway as well as the paved shoulders and multi-use trail on Texas Road; multi-use trails along Fryer Street and Alma.” Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche had his sights set on another roadway in Amherstburg, pointing out he wants to see sidewalks along a busy stretch of roadway in his home area of McGregor. “Since 2016, I’ve been advocating to get sidewalks on Middle Side Road between the Cypher Systems Greenway and Walker Road,” he said. Meloche noted there are roughly 157 homes in the area and he believes residents there have “waited too long” to get a sidewalk. “It’s a big safety concern,” said Meloche. Councillor Don McArthur, another McGregor resident, said he too would like to see a sidewalk on Middle Side Road but added the paved shoulders on Alma St. are a necessity as well.
McArthur noted there are nice running and cycling trails on Thomas Road and Meloche Road but there is little right now to connect them. “Alma is a death trap right now,” he said. With the County of Essex paying up to 40 per cent of the costs for paved shoulders on Alma St., “it’s a no brainer to do this,” McArthur said.
“Supporting Alma St. doesn’t mean you can’t support Middle Side Road. We need both,” added McArthur. “This in no way negates the need to link McGregor to the greenway.” Hewitt pointed out if the town were to pay for paved shoulders or sidewalks on Middle Side Road (County Road 10), the town would have to pay the entire costs as it stands right now.
Conservative candidate injured, will stay in the race By Ron Giofu The Conservative Party candidate for the riding of Essex suffered serious injuries as a result of an accident last Tuesday afternoon but it is staying in the race. According to a release from the Essex Electoral District Association, Chris Lewis was injured last Tuesday (Sept. 10) around 4:30 p.m. and was rushed to Erie Shores Health Care in Leamington with what was described as “critical injuries.” “He was treated for two broken ribs and a serious puncture wound requiring 22 stitches,” the release read. According to his campaign, Lewis was later discharged from the Leamington hospital and “spoke with Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer (Sept. 10) to reiterate his commitment to running in this election. He will continue on as the Conservative candidate, and is focused on standing up for the people of Essex to ensure they get ahead, not just get by.” Lewis is recovering at his home until his is able to return to the public's doorsteps. “He thanks all of the volunteers who continue to spread Andrew Scheer's positive Canadian vision for the Canadian economy.” As of last Friday, Lewis' Twitter account noted that his wife Allison provided an update that “Chris is doing well, still in pain but continues to work behind the scenes on the phone connecting with supporters.” Lewis attended his official campaign launch in Essex Monday and said he hopes to be back on the campaign trail this week.

Baseball diamonds coming to Jack Purdie Park? By Ron Giofu
Could there be baseball diamonds coming to Jack Purdie Park? The park, located on Richmond St., could see as many as two to three diamonds installed in it if the parks and recreation advisory committee’s motion goes forward. The committee is asking that town administration look into the feasibility of adding two to three diamonds at the park for the 2020 season. Committee chair Pat Catton brought the issue forward due to delays in getting diamonds installed at the Libro Centre. Rather than keep waiting for something to occur at the Libro Centre, which will be the subject of a future master plan, Catton suggested something happen at Jack Purdie Park to “speed up the process.” However, early indications from town administration are indicating that better usage of the existing baseball diamonds in Amherstburg may be their preferred recommendation. Director of parks, recreation, facilities and culture Phil Roberts noted there is no deficiency of diamond space in Amherstburg, noting there are some parks that are underutilized. Catton questioned that if there is a deficiency of space, would the four diamonds still be needed at the Libro Centre going forward. “I’m not trying to be a defeatist,” said Catton. “If it’s a pipe dream, let’s get rid of it. Let’s get moving on something.”
Councillor Don McArthur believed having several quality diamonds was promised to user groups and that the town would achieve economies of scale by having multiple diamonds in one location. “I think the ultimate goal is to have four premier diamonds to host games and tournaments,” he said. “We should keep our eyes on the prize with a premier baseball facility somewhere.” Manager of recreation services Rick Daly noted that discussions with the Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association (AMBA) were held prior to knowing the 2019 season could be held at Centennial Park. Daly said the initial analysis showed the programming could be held at Malden Centre Park and in River Canard. The AMBA has announced that games and practices that were held at Centennial Park in 2019 will be moved to Malden Centre Park for the 2020 season. Brinton Sharman, a committee member that is also on the AMBA board of directors, said the association’s numbers were impacted over confusion over where games would be played in 2019. “It was down, but I think once we stabilize where we are going to play, we will get back to our previous numbers,” stated Sharman. Committee member Diane Pouget said promises were made to the AMBA and to parents and if there wasn’t one dedicated park for baseball, it could be detrimental

Could Jack Purdie Park be home to baseball diamonds, even on a temporary basis? The parks and recreation advisory committee is wanting the town to take a look at the feasibility of two or three diamonds at the Richmond St. park. to the program. “Some of the parents had a difficult time organizing their children if one child was at Malden Centre Park and another one was at Centennial Park,” she said. If new diamonds are to go ahead, should that be the ultimate decision of town council, Roberts indicated it could be more cost effective at a place like Jack Purdie Park as there is already grass and there would be no need to wait a year or two for turf to grow like at another baseball diamond. The costs would be devoted to such things as clay and fencing. Catton wondered about a storage area, but Roberts noted that if it were a temporary solution at that park, that a storage shelter could be acquired. Catton called the process “jello-ish” and wanted something more concrete to tell residents, noting that he has been lacking information to tell people about the future plans. “I just think we need to firm it up and give information to the community,” he said. “Nothing absolute, but something
a little firmer.” McArthur wondered if putting diamonds at Jack Purdie Park would adversely impact any plans to install diamonds at the Libro Centre. Roberts said it wouldn’t, but noted administration likely wouldn’t recommend the diamonds there to council due to existing diamonds already being underutilized. If diamonds were to get the go-ahead, Roberts believed it wouldn’t necessarily be a waste of money as neighbourhood children could utilize them for “unstructured play.” The Libro Centre master plan could be ready to comment on by the end of the year, he added. Pouget cautioned that MPAC assessments may “come down hard” on local property owners and the committee should be mindful of that before recommending any new diamond construction. “It’s going to be very difficult for council to keep taxes down because of MPAC,” Pouget warned.

Parks and rec advisory committee offering up ideas on future projects By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg parks and recreation advisory
committee met last week and bandied about ideas for projects in the future. The committee looked at various ideas and will be putting forth a “wish list” to town council with a number of ideas they have for the town. One of those ideas is a dog park, which was floated by Councillor Don McArthur. “There’s lots of unofficial dog parks in town,” he said, noting the yard at the former St. Bernard School has become one of them. There is a demand for a dog park in Amherstburg, he said, noting there is one already in Essex. McArthur’s request would consider the feasibility of a dog park in Amherstburg, the cost, location and whether there would be volunteer groups willing to police it.
Committee member Diane Pouget said a previous parks committee that she served on was “very, very clear” about stencils for bike lanes and said through the years, nothing has happened. She said various reasons have been given for the lack of markings and added that the matter is no longer listed on council agendas. “I don’t know what happened to it,” she said. Pouget believed it is “a very, very important” issue in Amherstburg. “It’s a safety factor,” she said. Director of parks, recreation, facilities and culture Phil Roberts said road stencilling is more of a matter for the public works department and not the parks department, but McArthur added he wants to get confirmation on

where bike lanes should be marked. Pouget also voiced concern over tree planting and whether the town was still involved in the Essex Region Conservation Authority’s (ERCA) 50 million tree planting initiative. Manager of parks Annette Zahaluk said they have access to funding right now from ERCA and noted that the town’s parks master plan calls for more shade in every park. Roberts agreed that ERCA funding could be available but noted that ERCA faces a possible reduction in programming due to provincial regulations. Roberts indicated he would be delighted to search out locations that could be more naturalized within the town. The topic of the skateboard park was brought up by committee member Brinton Sharman, with McArthur noting he is approached by youth also wondering where the equipment will be located to. Zahaluk said she has reached out to get costs on refreshing and moving the equipment “but I have not been given direction on where it’s going to be put.” The committee has recommended that administration look at feasible options for the skateboard park’s relocation.

Well-known local comedian restarting a comedy club in Essex County
Music off the Back Porch
By Ron Giofu The comedic talents of Leo Dufour are well known in the area and he and his wife Diane are now getting back into the comedy club business. The Dufours will be operating Leo’s Komedy Korner out of The Grand tavern in Essex starting Sept. 20-21. Diane said Craig Mark called them “out of the blue” about operating a comedy club out of The Grand and Leo added they liked the room, as it seats 150-180 people. The room is also separate from where the band will play, and Leo noted that tickets to the comedy shows Friday and Saturday nights allow people to stay after and go into the other room to see the band. “We’re going to bring in different acts every weekend,” said Leo, noting the shows start at 8 p.m. “We’re booking different comedians every weekend, mostly from the U.S. and Canada. I’ll be hosting the shows.” Opening weekend includes comedians Stoney, D.C. Malone and C.C. “It’s nice to be back in the area with weekend shows,” added Diane.
“It’s been six years since we had a full-time club,” Leo pointed out. “It’ll be nice to work every weekend. It’s a nice room.” Leo headlined comedy clubs for 20 years and getting back into it by running shows out of The Grand “keeps me in my craft on a semi-retired basis.” The Grand handles all reservations and the meals and the Dufours look after the entertainment. “She’s the booker, I’m the performer. She’s the money, I’m the funny,” said Leo. Leo also plans to continue teaching comedy classes and plans to do so out of The Grand. Admission for the comedy shows is $15 each with it being $50 for two if dinner is included. Dinner includes a buffet that will vary each week and also includes a bottle of house wine. For more information, visit www. komedykorner.com or call 519-961-9099. Leo’s Komedy Korner also plans on presenting a show in Amherstburg with a 3 p.m. show planned for Sept. 22 at Lot 10 Brewery on Dalhousie St. “It’ll be nice doing shows again. I have to watch a video to learn how to do a show again,” Leo quipped.

The monthly “Music off the Back Porch” series returned to the Park House Museum Sept. 6 with its largest crowd yet. Over 60 people came to the rear of the Dalhousie St. community museum to hear Bluegrass Buffet and Lauren Baillargeon and Friends. Proceeds from the “Music off the Back Porch” events benefit the Park House.

Amherstburg Uncommon Festival fast approaching, events run Sept. 27-29 By Ron Giofu
The second annual Amherstburg Uncommon Festival is coming Sept. 27-29 and staff from the town’s tourism department is looking forward to it. “We are thrilled with this year’s Uncommon Festival,” said tourism co-ordinator Jennifer Ibrahim. “We did some surveys during (last year’s) festival as well as after the festival and got a good gauge on what people liked and what they wanted to see more of. This year’s festival is really going to reflect that.” Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Emm Gryner is scheduled to
help kick off the event. Emm Gryner is scheduled to perform Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in King’s Navy Yard Park in Amherstburg. The three-time Juno Award nominee, vocal coach and occasional CBC radio host has toured the world with David Bowie and appears on the recordings “Bowie at The Beeb” and “Glastonbury 2000.” In 2013, Emm collaborated with astronaut Chris Hadfield on his version of “Space Oddity.” The HadfieldGryner version has received over 200 million views worldwide and is celebrated as the first music video recorded in outer space. Rising local band Huttch will be opening
the concert for Emm Gryner. “We are thrilled to offer this free concert on opening day in downtown Amherstburg. It’s a great way to kick off the best new festival (2018 FEO) in Ontario,” said Ibrahim. Ibrahim added the festival is “absolutely free” but visitors and residents “have the option of enhancing their Amherstburg Uncommon experience through a few ticketed items.” There will be fascinator and top hat workshops and Carnival Diablo shows, the latter being offered for children aged nine-and-over. Tickets are $5. Ibrahim said the
operator is from a family that has been in the circus and sideshow business for generations. The Fantastic Feast culinary experience will also launch at the Amherstburg Uncommon Festival. Tickets for the steampunk/potter dinner-theatre taking place Sept. 27-28 at 7 p.m. each night are now on sale. The interactive dinner theater will feature pop up characters and a very unique themed, multicourse menu prepared by Chef Matthew Johnston from the Artisan Grill. The town says to “expect cosplay and elaborate costumes in an authentic 18th century setting.”
“We heard loud and clear from festival goers last year that they wanted evening activities at the festival and still be able to dress up, so the dinner theater is perfect! The menu lists some funky steampunk jargon and the food will be amazing not to mention the costumes that will grace the venue,” says manager of tourism and culture Anne Rota. Tickets for the “Fantastic Feast” are $75 per person. To view menu and purchase tickets, visit www.visitamherstburg. ca/uncommon. Tickets are also available at the Gordon House at 268 Dalhousie St. in Amherstburg. A free movie will also

Sr. Cardinals bow out in Essex County Senior League semi-finals By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team played well on the weekend but couldn't quite capture the Essex County Senior League title. The Cardinals lost in Sunday morning's semi-final game as they dropped an 8-6 decision to the Tecumseh Thunder. The Thunder went on to win the championship, defeating Harrow in the next two games. Amherstburg had the lead in the sixth inning but couldn't hold it, and the Thunder were able to surge ahead and eliminate the Cardinals from the doubleelimination playoff tournament. The Cardinals went 3-2 on the weekend with their second loss ending their season. “We had more hits than (Tecumseh),” said catcher Matt Lepine. “A couple of errors cost us the game. We played a good game.” Matt said they played their best baseball of the season in the league playoff tournament. Mac Ouellette said it was a hard fought weekend of baseball for them. “We gave it all we had,” said Ouellette. The senior Cardinals advanced to Sunday's semi-final by winning two of three games Saturday. After losing 5-2 to Harrow Saturday morning, they
eliminated the Woodslee Orioles senior team with a 4-1 win before knocking off Essex 8-3 Saturday evening. Brad Lepine homered twice Saturday and Mitch Lepine hit one home run Saturday. Brad's second homer came in the 8-3 win Saturday night over the Essex Yellowjackets. He drove a pitch over the left field fence to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the first inning. That inning also saw Brady Levack hit a triple then score on a dropped fly ball and Matt Lepine stroke a two-run single. Essex made it 4-3 in the bottom of the first but only had one hit off Cole Lepine the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Amherstburg scored four more in the third inning, three of which came on a bases clearing double by Brad Lepine. Nick Price had an RBI single that inning. “I had a great day,” said Brad. “We lost the first game but the last two, we pitched awesome. The team was gelling.” Amherstburg's other game in the tournament was an 8-2 win last Thursday, also over Essex, in what was the final game of the season for the Cardinals at the Libro Centre. The Cardinals scored three in the first inning, three more in the second and two in the eighth to go up 8-0. Essex scored their only two runs off of Amherstburg starting pitcher Mitch Lepine in the seventh inning.

Amherstburg’s Nick Price slides into third base during an 8-3 win over Essex during the Essex County Senior League baseball tournament. Amherstburg would advance to the semi-finals, but lost to Tecumseh. “We put up a few runs early. It's always great to get a jump on the other team,” said Mitch. “It makes my job easier.” Mitch added after that game it was good to get a win in the first game as it got them off on a good note for the rest of the playoff tournament. The Cardinals had travelled to Port
Lambton Labour Day weekend for the OBA tournament, but didn't play well there and lost both games. Anyone interested in sponsoring or playing for next year's Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team can contact Nick Price at 519-999-9390.

Roth Mosey & Partners LLP held its 24th annual golf tournament at Pointe West Golf Club Sept. 13. Among those volunteering at the putting green were (from left): Mekayla Assef, Linda Cook, Susan Parker, Sophy Theam, Jeremy Prince and James Prince. By Ron Giofu Roth Mosey & Partners LLP held its 24th annual golf tournament at Pointe West Golf Club Sept. 13 with Family Respite Services being the beneficiary. The tournament was held at Pointe West Golf Club in Amherstburg and featured 121 golfers hitting the links that day. Alexandria Fischer, community relations co-ordinator at Family Respite Services, said Roth Mosey & Partners LLP hold a charity golf tournament annually and have raised over $230,000 thus far for charities within Windsor-Essex County. “This year, Family Respite Services is benefitting from the proceeds,” she said. “Every year, they pick a different organization. We’re feeling really lucky to be the recipients this year.” Fischer said they are launching a capital program and trying to construct a new respite home. “We need $1.5 million to build the home,” she said. “Families in the respite program rely on donors like Roth Mosey. We are very grateful. We can’t do it alone. We need community collaboration.” Family Respite Services
(FRS) is a community organization working with 1,100 families caring for children and youth from 0-18 years of age with disabilities in Windsor-Essex County.
FRS supports families with children and youth with developmental and/ or physical disabilities and those children and youth with mental health challenges.
Roth Mosey & Partners has grown to become one of the largest independent accounting and business advisory firms in the Windsor-Essex County area.

Born October 28, 1968, Sandra passed away peacefully at the Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, Palliative Care early Saturday morning September 7th, 2019 with her husband by her side. Sandra succumbed to a battle with an incurable cancer which eventually caused a stroke. During her final days she was able to say her final good byes to all of her family and many friends. She maintained her unique sense of humor and quick wit throughout while continuing to express her unyielding concern for everyone else. A warrior until her final breath! Sandra is survived by her husband and best friend Herb, loving mother to Seth (Laura), Spencer, Mackenzie, Jacob, and a proud Mimi to Elliot and Max. She is the youngest daughter of Marie and the late Ron Bondy and a dear sister to Christine (Paul) Lavigne, Sue (Rob) Lavoie and Kathy (Philip) French. She will be fondly remembered as a dear sister-in-law of Deb (John Beaulieu) Alexander, and Colleen (Yvan) Mantha and daughter-in-law of Judith (Lloyd) Bondy and the late Herbert H. Ruthven. Sandra will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends across the country, as well as many co-workers and clients at Essex County Community Living where she enjoyed working for the last 17 years. A very special thank you to the Palliative Care Unit on 3 South at Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare and Transition to Betterness. The support, guidance, and compassion this entire team provides is beyond any expectation imaginable. They are the guiding light for many on their final journey, and we cannot express the impact they have had on our entire circle of family and friends over the last 4 weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Transition to Betterness atwww.t2b.ca in memory of Sandra to continue the invaluable support they provide throughout the area. At Sandra’s request, cremation has been entrusted to SIMPLE CHOICE CREMATION CENTRE (519-254-2585) and all are invited to join in a Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 6th from 1-3 PM at Coopers Hawk Vineyards (1425 Iler Rd, Harrow, ON N0R 1G0). Condolences and cherished memories may be shared privately with her family at ruthvenclan@gmail.com or publicly on her tribute wall at www.simplechoicecremation.ca

Around the house – Fall clean-up tips
MEMORIAM
BIRTHDAY
Happy
As the cooler weather hits and the garden growing season ends, getting your home organized inside and out is a must. Here are some easy fall clean-up tips: For the yard, trim back overgrown and dead limbs in your hedges to protect them for the winter. Don’t forget to trim your trees, especially those close to the house, garage or shed. Clear old plants and weeds from your garden bed or pots to make it easier for spring planting and keep insects at bay. If not using winterized pots, bring them indoors. Clear leaves from the lawn, aerate and consider a fall fertilizing. Decks and garden furniture will need a good cleaning and, if appropriate, staining. Don’t forget to properly store cushions and outdoor tablecloths so that they can be used again next season. Garden tools also need a good cleaning or wipe down before storing for the winter. Moving inside, plan and prepare before you start. Make sure you have reusable boxes and bags on hand and create some storage space indoors or out. If outside, make sure the space is sheltered. Organize room by room. When swapping out seasonal clothes in your closet, take some time to make sure you still need or use each item. If not, recycle or donate it. Keep in mind that you can donate unwanted clothing, textiles and small household items, such as small garden tools, instead of throwing them out. Charitable organizations like Diabetes Canada are always looking for donations. You can donate your wares at one of their donation bins or schedule a home pickup at declutter.diabetes.ca.
Birthday
This is our First Year without you, they say there is a reason, they say that time will heal but neither time nor reason will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache that lies behind our smiles, no one knows how many times we have broken down and cried we want to tell you something so there won’t be any doubt you’re so wonderful to think of but so hard to be without.

Admirals schedule released for the 2019-20 PJHL Stobbs Division season By Ron Giofu
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Delegation is the best way to complete a complicated project, Aries. Work with others to achieve a balance so you’re not doing it all. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Those who are always looking to the future may not fully embrace the present, Taurus. Focus fully on those things in your life that are meaningful right now.
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you’ll find the right pace to begin a relationship or maintain the one you have. Things are looking good for romance this week, and you may want to step up the seduction. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, when you turn on the charm, you are a force. You exude a natural magnetism that people are simply drawn to. Remember to use your powers wisely. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, look for a balance of activities that satisfy you both physically and spiritually over the course of the week. Getting in touch with nature is one way to achieve this. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 There is only so long you can put on a brave face, Virgo. Instead of hiding your emotions, let others see what you are truly feeling. Do not keep all of those emotions bottled up. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Add a personal touch to all you do and your efforts will be received more warmly, Libra. Add a personalized note to a gift when visiting a friend or family member. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, touch base with your support system. You can use some extra muscle behind your ideas, especially as you move into uncharted terrain within the next few days. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 This is the week to reassess your finances, Sagittarius. Figure out how to curb some extraneous expenses, like recurring charges or overage fees. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Your professional performance may be under scrutiny for several days, Capricorn. Put your best foot forward. A promotion may be in the works if you play it right. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Don’t get too caught up on your idea of perfect, Aquarius. If you spend too much time on the small details, you’ll overlook the magic of the bigger picture.

ERCA outlines 2020 budget challenges during board meeting when they are most needed. “In addition to our longstanding role in protecting the citizens of Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island from natural hazards such as flooding and erosion, our programs and services continue to demonstrate an ongoing and consistent response to real and serious problems and challenges in the region – land degradation, natural area coverage, water quality, and flooding and erosion, said Irek Kusmierczyk, ERCA’s Chair. “Today, new issues such as phosphorous and harmful algal blooms, climate adaptation, and the need to support sustainable, resilient communities must be considered in meeting the needs of RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU our municipalities. It seems to me that at a time when Ontario is warming ERCA general manager Richard Wyma addresses the board of directors last faster than the global average, and Thursday night at the Essex Civic Centre. Wyma addressed the board when homes built in flood prone areas on the budget challenges ERCA faces this year particularly in light of prior to the Authority’s establishment provincial funding changes on the horizon. are experiencing catastrophic flooding, Special to the RTT The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has begun to identify challenges and risks for the 2020 year, as the impacts of provincial changes remain to be seen. “Though we await clarification from the province, the letter received from Minister Yurek in August seems to imply that there might be further transfer payment reductions for Drinking Water Source Protection and Section 39 Flood and Erosion programs, explained Richard Wyma, ERCA’s General Manager. “Other program areas, such as Restoration and Stewardship, the Community Museums Operating Grant for the John R. Park Homestead, and the funding for the Detroit River Canadian Cleanup effort as well are either at risk, or to date, we have no information on the status of funding yet for 2019. Due to these funding cuts and unknown status of expected transfer payments, the Authority continues to project an operating deficit for 2019. Previous transfer payments for
these programs totaled nearly $500,000 annually. For 2020, due to the uncertainties related to provincial transfer payments, ERCA is predicting a budget shortfall of $375,000 - $575,000 which includes over $200,000 in potential cuts to provincial transfers for flood management and source water protection on top of the $100,000 cut to ERCA’s flood management program in 2019; and over $100,000 in other potential lost program revenues. As well, as part of changes to the Conservation Authorities Act as a result of the More Homes, More Choice Act, ERCA will have to review how it delivers its programs and services, which will include the development of agreements with municipalities for programs and services that are partially or fully funded through municipal levies. The Act provides for a transition period before these agreements are required to be in place, however, ERCA will need to begin reviewing those programs with municipalities in 2020, which may impact on what programs and services are delivered in Essex Region at a time
the integrated watershed management approach taken by ERCA and all Conservation Authorities is more important than ever before. The loss of these programs that are demanded by our residents and municipalities would put our watershed region in grave danger. ERCAalong with the other Conservation Authorities, and Conservation Ontario continue to advocate for continued funding for delivery of these provincial programs. Administration and the Board will consider current reserves, reallocation from land acquisition, levies and fees for service, as well as program delivery and present options to reduce deficit projections due to uncertainties regarding additional funding cuts, lack of clarification regarding mandatory services and implications and timelines to undertake service delivery agreements with municipal partners.

TAI CHI TO BETTER HEALTH In ancient times it was believed that the true health comes when body, mind and spirit work together in harmony. The art of Tai Chi grew out of this tradition and is a way to develop a body that is strong, yet supple, balanced and energetic, a mind that is calm and clear, yet creative and dynamic, and a spirit that is light and peaceful, yet resilient. Tai Chi involves gentle deep stretching with a full range of motion and continuous turning of the spine. For example, the art of Taoist Tai Chi takes the body through continuous sequence of movements that are designed to promote greater relaxation, deeper circulation and gentle stretching of all body tissues. Practitioners of this art exercise the whole physiology including muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems, as well as tendons, joints, connective tissue and organs. Rather than depending on tension and the development of hard muscle tissue, Tai Chi develops a body that is relaxed and strong at the deepest levels. Amherstburg Community Church welcomes community to annual “Block Party”

Cora, Brielle, Caden and Emmie MacGregor-Mitchell took part in some mini-golf at Amherstburg Community Church’s “Block Party.”
An annual tradition for families continued at Amherstburg Community Church (ACC). ACC welcomed over 200 people for the “Block Party” event, which featured bouncy castles, craft vendors, pedal go-karts, mini-golf, food, face painting and fireworks. Kerrington Sweeney, children’s pastor at Amherstburg Community Church, pointed out there were multiple reasons the church held the “Block Party” again this year. “We want to reach out into the town and bless and give back to the community,” said Sweeney. Sweeney added that it is also a good way to let people know about the church’s fall youth programming, which includes “Family Night” every Wednesday. That includes “Kids Club” for infants up to students in Grade 5 with “Junior High” running for children in Grades 6-8. “Myself and (youth pastor) Josh Maedel run them with a team of volunteers,” said Sweeney, who called the volunteers the “dream team” for their ongoing efforts. This was the fourth year Sweeney has overseen the “Block Party” and said she has tried to make it bigger and better. “When I first got here (at ACC), they had something here but not to the extent it is now,” said Sweeney. The programming gained more than 45 new children in 2018 and “we’re hoping for more this year,” she added. Sweeney stated the “Block Party” is a lot of work to plan and execute. “We started planning for this in February,” she said. “There’s a lot of people dedicated to the cause and willing to give back.” There were about 65 volunteers that made the “Block Party” happen, Sweeney pointed out. “Our church just wants to be able to give back,” she said. “That’s what this church is all about – investing in families.” Amherstburg Community Church is located at 125 Alma St. Their phone number is 519-736-5644 and their website is www.acchurch.ca.
A group of local pickleball players enjoy a game at the courts at Malden Centre Park last Thursday. They are looking for more courts, possibly at the same park, but will have to wait as last Friday’s storm damaged fencing at those courts. By Ron Giofu With pickleball gaining popularity within both Amherstburg and around Essex County, local players are searching for more courts in town. A group of pickleball players, led by Richard White, made a presentation to the parks and recreation advisory committee last Wednesday night. The game is a cross between tennis and badminton but has to be played on a hard surface court. Games usually last 15-20 minutes and normally see four people play at one time. White said there are about 60 pickleball players in Amherstburg and they use outdoor courts in Malden, Anderdon and McGregor and indoor courts at the Libro Centre when the ice is out and at General Amherst High School when the gymnasiums are available. He noted that eight outdoor courts planned in Kingsville are and ten in Tecumseh with his submission to the committee also stating that six indoor courts are also planned in Tecumseh. “We have no plans right now,” he said of Amherstburg. White believed it would be more expensive to create courts at the Libro Centre, adding refurbishing additional courts in Malden Centre Park would be less expensive. Access to the latter took a hit on the weekend, when fencing was knocked over at the tennis courts due to the strong storm that blew through the area. Director of parks, recreation, facilities and culture Phil Roberts told the pickleball group their timing “was very good because of things we are working on right now” and pointed out pickleball was mentioned as part of the town’s parks master plan. He also noted the Libro Centre master plan is yet to come and that the site is only 50 per cent developed. Of the former St. Bernard School that is being turned into a community hub, “the gym is going to be left in its entirety so we can provide some recreational programming.” Town recreation staff also floated the idea of looking into flooring for the indoor soccer facility at the Libro Centre. Use of the courts at River Canard Park was also mentioned, with Councillor Don McArthur stating it could be another option the players could use. “We are allies,” said committee chair Pat Catton. “It is a necessary asset in this town.”

Miracle League’s fall season starts, more volunteers needed PHOTO BY JONATHAN MARTIN
Aidan McCandless swings at a ball on the Miracle League of Amherstburg’s opening day in Amherstburg on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019. By Jonathan Martin The Miracle League of Amherstburg needs more volunteers, its board members say. The league, which presents people with physical or intellectual disabilities with a “safe, barrier-free space” to play baseball keeps growing, said Michele Vigneux, a 10-year veteran of the league’s board of directors. Last Saturday, the Miracle League of Amherstburg held its opening day at the Libro Centre. Around 150 players, broken into nine teams, are registered to play ball this season. Many of the players need one-on-one support, Vigneux said. “We had a couple teams (of volunteers) come out this morning,” she said
Saturday. “I had to take to Facebook to call my friends for help this afternoon, though. A bunch of amazing people responded and came out to help.” The Miracle League has 34 open spots for “player buddies,” volunteers who accompany the league’s players onto the diamond. Vigneux is also looking for a pitcher, an umpire, a mascot, somebody to run the music, two announcers and two people to run the barbecue. “For me, volunteering is almost selfish,” Vigneux said. “I receive so much more than I give.” Volunteers must be at least 12 years old unless they’re accompanied by a parent. To sign up, volunteers can head to the league’s website at amherstburgmiracle.com.
