McGregor Mug Run and International Beer Festival brings hundreds to Co-An Park By Ron Giofu
RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU
About 275 runners and walkers hit the streets and trails of McGregor last Saturday for the eighth annual McGregor Mug Run. That was followed by the International Beer Festival back at Co-An Park.

Almost 300 runners and walkers hit the streets of McGregor on the weekend then cooled off with a cold one back at Co-An Park with hundreds of more people afterward. The eighth annual McGregor Mug Run and International Beer Festival was Saturday with the late afternoon run seeing people brave the heat to run either a 5K or a 10K on a trail that involved both roadways and the Chrysler Canada Greenway. The accompanying beer festival saw about 11 local craft breweries participate – including G.L. Heritage Brewing Co. and Lot 10 Brewing Co. of Amherstburg. “I believe we're at about 275 for the run,” estimated event chair Ryan Raymond. “We've been pretty much the same the last three years, give or take a few people.” Runners came as far as Kingston, Toronto, London and Chatham-Kent to participate, Raymond added. “They definitely travel,” he said. The opening of several craft breweries in the Windsor-Essex County area has helped the festival, he said. A number of local bands and musical performers played under Co-An Park's pavilion as well. Raymond said he and his team of over 30 volunteers were happy to help out. Proceeds from the McGregor Mug Run and International Beer Festival will be donated to Epilepsy Southwestern Ontario.

New development Town to assist until Belle Vue Conservancy becomes incorporated charges bylaw By Ron Giofu
With the transition from the former Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) to the current ACF, it has impacted the Belle Vue Conservancy's ability to ensure donors get tax receipts. To that end, the town of Amherstburg will be stepping in to help process charitable donations until the Belle Vue Conservancy gets its charitable number and can issue receipts themselves. Belle Vue Conservancy president Shirley Curson-Prue gave an update to town council last Monday night and outlined the progress – and challenges – the group faces. She noted when she last appeared in May, the conservancy requested that administration be directed to seek out major sponsors to build a conference and event centre on the Belle Vue site, located at 525 Dalhousie St. “At that time we stated our continuing commitment to raise funds to fix the heritage features of the house, specifically the roof, eaves and windows,” Curson-Prue stated in a report to town council. “Funds raised in 2017 and 2018 were used to pay for the replacement of the roof and eaves and attracted a Parks Canada matching grant
of $100,000. We then turned our attention to the windows and started a new window program offering naming rights for windows at a variety of funding levels from $2,000 to $20,000.” Curson-Prue stated in June 2019, the group was informed that the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) had a new Board of Directors and that the ACF would no longer issue tax receipts for funds donated to them for the Belle Vue. “We took immediate steps to obtain incorporation status for the Belle Vue Conservancy so that we could issue tax receipts to donors. We received Ontario Business Corporation approval in July and have submitted our application to the CRA for tax status; this process takes a number of months,” she said. “During this period, we have continued to conduct fundraising events including the annual Nine and Dine Golf event and a Jazz Dinner and Show. We also participated with the Town in the submission of an application in July for Federal Development Program funding of $3.5 million to essentially fix the main floor of the House and the upstairs centre block. The submission described a number of partnerships which would result
LAKESIDE PARK PLACE CONDOMINIUMS
from this funding which would support the use of the House as an event centre. However, it should be noted that even if the FedDev Application is approved in whole or in part, none of these funds was earmarked for the windows.” Curson-Prue noted that while they continue to receive donations, the total received is understandably less than the conservancy budgeted since not all donors are prepared or able to wait until such time as the group obtains CRA approval and are able to issue a tax receipt to them. “For this reason, we are not able to confirm that we will be able to adhere to the original five-year schedule to raise the $414,000 needed to replace the windows,” she said. Councillor Patricia Simone pointed out there are those that want to donate and suggested the town help facilitate the donations until the Belle Vue Conservancy can do it themselves. CAO John Miceli said the town could do that, but noted the town would have to have a segregated fund to keep those funds separate and that a report would be need to be brought to council when the time comes to release the funds. Curson-Prue said the conservancy has raised over $400,000 towards the restoration of the 200-year-old Belle Vue property.

passed, implementation debated By Ron Giofu
Town council has passed a new development charges bylaw and most have agreed to allow more time before it's implemented, but not all council members agree with it. Council members voted 3-2 to not only pass a new development charges bylaw, but to delay the actual implementation of the fees until Jan. 1, 2020. Council had heard from a developer with concerns. Voting in favour of the time extension were Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche and councillors Marc Renaud and Patricia Simone with Renaud having made the motion. Councillors Michael Prue and Don McArthur were opposed. Ron deJonge of Everjonge Homes addressed council with concerns over the increase, believing the fees going up about $4,100 per residential lot could dissuade people from coming to Amherstburg. Development charges will be going up to around $16,200. “My concern is that it makes us less competitive,” said deJonge. The original motion called for implementation Tuesday, the day after the meeting, and deJonge also worried about timing. He wanted another four to six weeks to deal with customers to explain the increases. Nancy Neale, consultant with Watson and Associates, noted the town's current development charges bylaw expires Oct. 4 and that there would be no bylaw to use to gather charges unless a new one was passed. However, she noted it was up to council how it could be implemented. She pointed out some municipalities FAST hold rates for a period of time as long as certain conditions are met.

By Ron Giofu A wounded Chris Lewis met with supporters last week to officially kick off his campaign. Still suffering from injuries sustained in a recent fall at his family farm, injuries which included two broken ribs and a puncture wound that required 22 stitches, the Conservative candidate in the riding of Essex still spoke and met with supporters at his campaign office in Essex. While stating “I've got a ways to go,” Lewis said “this last week has put a fire in my belly” and he is eager to return to the campaign trail. Even though he has missed time, his team hasn't as Lewis noted his volunteers have gone canvassing while he has been on the mend. “We're really not missing a step here,” he said. Lewis said he is hearing that people are paying too much in taxes. He touts Conservative leader Andrew Scheer's plan of scrapping the carbon tax, taking GST off home heating and tax-free parental benefits. “People are getting by and they are not getting ahead,” he said. “They feel taxed to death. We need relief. We need someone who can bring back a voice for Essex.” The riding was Conservative for 11 years under Jeff Watson and Lewis said people are ready to get back to that. He added that since his injuries, he has been humbled by the level of support he has received. Lewis also pledged he will run a positive campaign and wants to make a difference. “I am in this for one thing – to leave the world a better place than I found it,” he said. This is the second election in as many years for the

Health care experience makes People need to take better care resident appreciative of the world around us of what is available in Canada
I am a mother, office manager, nature lover, animal lover and someone who truly appreciates what our beautiful country has to offer and wishes to preserve it for future generations. I have taught my daughters to respect and appreciate nature. I remember growing up, my dad would watch David Suzuki and I still recall the warnings he gave us back then about what we were doing to our environment. No one listened. Now all of that is coming true. Are we still going to ignore his warnings? How about his recommendations on how we can start to repair the damage we have done?
We are given this Earth as a gift (whether you are religious or not, we do not own this Earth) that we should appreciate for all its beauty and respect for all that it does for us. Each part of nature has a natural purpose in the ecosystem that is required for us to survive or for the production of our fossil fuels, help our crops grow, clean the air we breathe, etc. We need to realize we do not continue to live if we do not take care of what is most important. —Tiffany Laporte Amherstburg
In May, I was getting into a friend’s car when a strong gust of wind slammed the door against me and I went down with one leg in the car. My leg was impaled on the bottom edge of the door. The staff at Kingsville Golf and Country Club restaurant helped comfort me until the ambulance could arrive. They were trained in first aid. Paramedics Ray and Matt took me to Leamington hospital. They were professional and compassionate. The Amherstburg Family Health Team assumed follow-up care with nurses Teresa and Brook spending more than two hours removing over 50 staples and dozens of stitches.
A referral was made to Saint Elizabeth Elite Health Care for home care. The visiting nurses and wound care specialists came faithfully to our home providing excellent medical care. I also want to thank the staff of the Amherstburg Medical Supply for getting a hospital bed to my home the very next day. A special thanks to my friends Carol, Kathy and Freddy. We are very fortunate to have services available in Amherstburg. We often don’t appreciate the health care available to us in Canada. —Denise Otoupal Amherstburg

Trudeau visits area as part of Another successful tumultuous week for the Liberal leader year for the
McGregor Mug Run

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau waves to the crowd at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts last Monday night. The prime minister was on the defensive a few days later when 2001 photos of him wearing brownface surfaced. By Ron Giofu Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Windsor last week speaking to a group of supporters and that was likely the high point of his week given the events that followed. The Liberal leader was mired in controversy over published photos of himself wearing brownface at a 2001 party. That came just days after his stop at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts, where he touted such things as one million new jobs and new health accords with the provinces. Trudeau also highlighted the trade agreements his government worked out with the United States and Mexico, believing that “is a win for Canada.” He claimed Conservative leader Andrew Scheer wanted to “cave” to U.S. President Donald Trump on the deal.
“Andrew Scheer was dead wrong,” said Trudeau. According to the Liberal leader, who was introduced by Chrystia Freeland and Windsor West Liberal candidate Sandra Pupatello, “Windsorites understand more than just about anybody else how truly integrated our economies are with local plants like Fiat Chrysler and many folks crossing the border every single day for work, he said. “They are eating breakfast in Canada, lunch in the U.S. and getting back home to Canada for dinner.” Trudeau said his government went to Washington and fought for Canadian workers across the country. Pupatello, joined by Liberal candidates from across the region including Audrey Festeryga in

Essex, believed “it's time for a strong voice in Windsor and southwestern Ontario” and believed a vote for the NDP “brings us one step closer to Scheer.” The photos of Trudeau caused the incumbent prime minister to apologize in a press conference last week. According to reports, Trudeau stated: “I dressed up in an Aladdin costume and put makeup on. I shouldn’t have done that. I should have known better, but I didn’t, and I’m really sorry. It was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now I recognize, it was something racist to do.” The PM also told national reporters aboard his campaign plane: “It was a dumb thing to do, I’m disappointed in myself, I’m pissed off at myself for having done it. I wish I hadn’t done it, but I did it, and I apologize for it.”

It's just so fun,” said Raymond. “We love bringing it all together into one awesome festival. It's a good, solid, fun party. It's like the best backyard party you will ever go to.” Raymond thanked the “phenomenal” sponsors and said that allowed them to book the bands and present the festival. He also thanked the team of volunteers that helped present last Saturday's event. He also said the town of Essex was great to work with, as that is where Co-An Park is located (though Amherstburg contributes to the park's operation). The date for the ninth annual McGregor Mug Run and International Beer Festival has already been set and that will occur Sept. 26, 2020.

NDP leader stops in Essex, pitches pharmacare and dental care during visit
RTT PHOTOS BY RON GIOFU
Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh (second from left) addresses the crowd and media outside of Tracey Ramsey’s campaign office in Essex last Friday. From left: Cheryl Hardcastle (Windsor-Tecumseh), Singh, Ramsey (Essex) and Brian Masse (Windsor West). By Ron Giofu The leader of the federal New Democratic Party was in the riding last week, promoting his party’s plan for universal pharmacare and dental care. Jagmeet Singh stopped at Tracey Ramsey’s campaign office in Essex last Friday morning, where he spoke to NDP supporters and assembled media on his
party’s health care plans as well as other topics, including the controversial photos of Prime Minister and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau wearing brownface when Trudeau was younger. Singh was joined by Ramsey, the incumbent candidate in Essex, and the incumbents in Windsor West and Windsor-Tecumseh – Brian Masse and
Cheryl Hardcastle as well. “They are fighting hard,” Singh said of his local colleagues. Singh said both Conservative and now Liberal governments have made decisions “for people at the top” and he said “it’s hurting everyone else.” “Everywhere I go, I hear how worried people are about affording their medications. People are making impossible choices between paying for prescription drugs or covering their rent. They need help right now,” said Singh. “The Liberals have given Canadians false hope on pharmacare for more than twenty years. They promise Canadians help during elections, and then side with big pharma and don’t deliver.” According to Singh, the Liberals first promised pharmacare in their 1997 Red Book, 22 years ago. He accused Trudeau's Liberals of failing to deliver any help, while taking more than 850 meetings with drug and pharma lobbyists since 2015. He added the Conservatives have shown again and again that they will cut services and hurt families even more – just like he stated Doug Ford has done in Ontario. “Canadians need a government that takes their struggles seriously, and has the courage to act. It’s not good enough to promise help during an election and then fail to provide it, the way Justin Trudeau has.
We’ll make sure that Canadians get the care they need,” added Singh. “If you need health care in this country, you should use your health card, not your credit card.” The NDP plan for pharmacare and dental care would take effect in 2020. Singh said an NDP government would sit down with the provinces and also invest $9 billion federally. He estimated buying medication in bulk could save upwards of $4.2 billion. Theresa Hayes, an area citizen who lost her full-time job 13 years ago, said she has only been able to find part-time work since with no benefits. “I work a minimum wage job and my medications cost $300 per month,” she said. Singh criticized not just the photos of Trudeau, but also Trudeau’s “pattern of behaviour” that also shows in his policies. He indicated. He noted that he has received a call from Trudeau’s office after the photos became public and Singh said he is “open” to a private conversation with Trudeau. After stopping at Ramsey’s campaign office, Singh travelled to Windsor where he had a meeting with Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkins and that was followed by a town hall meeting at the Fogolar Furlan Club with Hardcastle, Masse and Ramsey.

Board members honoured as part of Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission’s AGM By Ron Giofu
The Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission held its annual general meeting (AGM) last week and bid farewell to a long-time board member and thanked a few more. The mission’s AGM was last Wednesday night and included a tribute to outgoing vice president Shirley Hitchcock. Hitchcock left the board of directors after 11 years of service. Mission president Tim McAllister had words of praise for his now-former vice president and presented her with a gift on behalf of the board. “Shirley is a true friend of the mission,” said McAllister. McAllister explained that Hitchcock and her husband Jon moved to Amherstburg from Toronto and she came in one day to drop off clothes. After chatting with her, McAllister invited Hitchcock to sit on the board. “I came over and we talked and the rest is history,” he said. Hitchcock was named an honourary board member, joining Bart DiPasquale as the only other person with that designation, and she was invited to come to the mission any time she wanted. “I know her heart is here,” said McAllister, as he credited her for helping the mission grow. Hitchcock said they retired to “this beautiful little town of Amherstburg in June of 2008.” “Once we were settled in, we found we had many items that we no longer needed. After several phone calls, someone suggested the mission might accept them. I called and they told me to bring them over,” Hitchcock

recalled. “When I arrived with a second trip, I noticed that almost all of the items from my first trip were gone. On my third trip, several people were waiting for me to open the trunk so they could see what was available. It was on the third trip that Hitchcock said she was approached by McAllister, who thanked her and gave her a tour of the mission. “He said they could really use more support and asked if I might be interested. I could see the need and decided I would help for a few months,” she said. “It doesn’t seem possible that I have been part of the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission team for over 11 years.” Hitchcock said her main contribution during the time she served was to help organize and host fundraising events. She gave special thanks to the many volunteers that worked together to make the events happen and to “the wonderful people and businesses” in the community that supported the mission. “With the support of two grants and many special fundraisers, I’m proud to leave the mission with custom office furniture, updated kitchen equipment and supplies, many new cupboards, new chairs and more,” she said. “I’m most proud to leave them with an almost new van.” Hitchcock also pointed out other positive ways the mission impacted her. “Along the way, I met many people and developed many lasting friendships,” she stated. “Volunteering at the mission has indeed been wonderful and, at times, challenging. However, I feel blessed to have been part of such a wonderful group of people that are truly dedicated to helping others.”

Making the presentation are board member Tammy Pasceri and president Tim McAllister last Wednesday night. McAllister, with the support of his wife Violet and many volunteers, oversee the daily food and fellowship that is offered, Hitchcock continued. Board members each play a vital role in creating and supporting the many things that need to be done daily, she added. “Without Jon’s support, in so many ways, it would not have been possible for me to dedicate the number of hours I spent supporting the mission and I’m forever grateful,” said Hitchcock. “The mission and the people will always be part of my life and, while I will miss everyone very much, I will be sure to come by to visit on a regular basis.”

Board members honoured at Mission’s AGM

volunteers are encouraged to “always keep your eyes on people coming in that need our help. The rest is small potatoes.” He expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to current board members, those leaving the board and to newcomers to the board. The mission had a “good year,” he said, and that it was because of the support of the volunteers and the community. “You have all made a difference, whether it was through the giving of donations or by some other tangible means,” he said.

Over the past year, the mission had a new roof put on the building, got a new van, replaced their grease trap and hot water tank and repaired the furnace. “Certainly, none of that would have been accomplished without the generous contributions you all have made, in some way, shape or form, and for that we are eternally grateful,” said McAllister. The mission is in its 24th year, he added, but the work is “far from being over,” and they continue to pursue new partnerships and maintain current ones. “Over the years, we have utilized the generous contributions and donations to serve our community through our breakfast program, our hot meals program, our baby food program, our emergency food bank and our computer accessibility program,” said McAllister. “However, I must say,

New development charges bylaw
Continued from Page 2 Neale added that Amherstburg has competitive rates as compared to other Essex County municipalities, including lower than many. deJonge was concerned that people who are looking to located in Essex County could choose Essex or Kingsville over Amherstburg if there was an increase and said people would be put under pressure to decide with too short of a time frame. Prue had suggested implementing the new fees Oct. 4. Town council left the matter on the table during the meeting as Neale prepared a new bylaw and schedule, and picked up the debate once she completed. Prue said the town averages about 12 new builds a month and by delaying the implementation until Jan. 1, the municipality could be out as much as $100,000. Delaying the implementation only until Oct. 4 would result in a slight loss, he believed. “I am not in favour of losing the most money,” said Prue, telling reporters after the meeting “you are looking at $100,000 by extending it” and believed it could be more if developers rush to get their applications in before the fees go up. “I think it was a very sad mistake,” he said after the meeting. Prue added “with all due respect, developers are not poor people” and rejected the argument people may go elsewhere to live. “If people want to live in Amherstburg, they'll live in Amherstburg,” he said, adding he and his wife chose to locate in town rather than other Essex County municipalities. McArthur agreed, stating the town has already had public meetings on the topic so it was known the increases were coming. Meloche believed allowing a grace period “seems to make sense” and that “it's all a matter of perspective.” “To say that it's a loss, it's a loss if no one builds here in the next three months,” said Meloche.

Grassy hill sparks discussion at parks and recreation advisory committee meeting By Ron Giofu The majority of the hill at the Libro Centre has seen grass become longer than in past years and one councillor is wondering why. Councillor Don McArthur brought the issue forward at the Sept. 9 town council meeting, wondering if it had become too wet to cut or whether the plan was to let the grass grow out and let the hill become more naturalized. Director of parks, recreation, facilities and culture Phil Roberts pointed out the trail on the hill was cut but acknowledged that it was a difficult task to do so. The issue was raised again at the recent parks and recreation advisory committee meeting at town hall as McArthur is also a member of that committee. Manager of parks Annette Zahaluk said the issue is similar to what happened earlier this year to the Golfview Park in that it grew long due to a very wet spring. “The Libro Centre got away from us in the spring,” she admitted. Whether or not to use the hill for tobogganing in the winter was also discussed by the parks and recreation advisory committee, with Roberts indicating they can look at that further from a risk management point of view. As for the grass on the hill, it appears it will remain long for the rest of the season. Roberts indicated it could be looked at from a naturalization point of view as it could provide a link to the neighbouring Big Creek watershed.

The length of grass and weeds on the hill at the Libro Centre has garnered the attention of at least one town councillor. Councillor Don McArthur brought the issue forward at both the last regular meeting of town council and the most recent parks and recreation advisory committee meeting.

“Flags of Remembrance” pays tribute to those who served Canada By Ron Giofu
Master of ceremonies Michael Beale called for those in attendance to say the name of a veteran they knew aloud. “It's nice to think they will have a presence with us today,” said Beale. Veterans Voices of Canada representative Terri DavisFitzpatrick thanked everyone from Windsor as well as Essex and Kent counties for attending. She said the “Flags of Remembrance” ceremonies held nation-wide are fundraisers for Veterans Voices of Canada and that 42 local veterans were interviewed for the projects. Their stories are now kept alive and shared with youth to teach them about their history. The 128 flags that are flown are
symbolic of the 128,000 Canadians were were killed or are missing in action in every war from the Boer War to the present. “Next time you see a Canadian veteran, thank them for their service,” she said. “They were willing to put their lives on the line for us.” Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkins said the Flags of Remembrance movement is bringing people together coast-to-coast. “We are free today because of the sacrifices made by people in perilous times,” said Dilkins. People from around WindsorEssex County and Chatham-Kent gathered on Windsor's waterfront Saturday to pay tribute to veterans and soldiers that have served Canada. The Veterans Voices of Canada presented its annual “Flags of Remembrance” ceremony in Assumption Park along the Detroit River with Amherstburg veterans among those honoured. One of the veterans was the late John White, who had his plaque sponsored by St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School. “It's just an honour to our family that my dad has been remembered by the kids of Villanova high school,” said Kathy Parks, who was joined by members of her family at the ceremony. Parks thanked Villanova vice principal Laura Beltran, who arranged for the school to sponsor the plaque. “She had my dad speak before,” said Parks. “She's responsible for students honouring our veterans and learning their history.” Parks said her family was pleased to be part of the event. Local couple encouraging others to see their own country after epic adventure By Ron Giofu
An Amherstburg couple have returned from an epic vacation and are encouraging others to see more of Canada. Lynne and David Fox travelled north to Churchill, Manitoba where they had the opportunity to view polar bears and various other wildlife, go into Hudson Bay, and hike in an environment with various different flora and fauna. Their trip was Aug. 19-27 with the trip fulfilling one of their goals to see more regions of Canada. Lynne said they are looking to not only looking to educate fellow Amherstburg residents about Canada’s north and the animals that live there, but they are also hoping to try and inspire people to explore what Canada has to offer. “I’m looking to perhaps present this at the school where I substitute (École St.-Jean Baptiste) in Amherstburg,” said Lynne. “It was very educational. It was eye-opening and life-changing.” Lynne said she would also be willing to share their story with local service clubs and organizations as well. “Whoever wants to see our photos and learn about our north and our bears, I would be delighted to share the experience,” she said. The trip came after the local couple had gone on a safari in South Africa. Lynne said that was a “beautiful experience” and they came across information in Canadian Geographic magazine on the northern excursion offered by the company Churchill Wild after returning home. “We had travelled quite a bit and we wanted to keep experiencing Canada,” she said. “When I saw the arctic safari, I called them. It’s the only one in the
world where you can walk along with the polar bears.” Lynne noted that “we can do this in our own back yard.” “I long have had a passion for the polar bear,” she continued. “They are absolutely majestic animals. To see them in their own habitat is almost too good to believe.” They booked 18 months in advance as the lodges only have eight rooms each and fill up quickly. They were the only Canadian couple on the tour with others from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and Wales. They went out with three guides on daily hikes, regardless of whether it was sunny or raining heavily, with some of the hikes being upwards of 20 kilometers. “We were out in it and delighting in the beauty of our north,” said Lynne. “To be walking in the footsteps of the polar bear and to be within 30 metres of them, it just takes your breath away. In addition to interactions with bears and other animals, they also saw a spectacular Northern Lights show. “We don’t realize the gem that is up there,” said David. “It was definitely the trip of a lifetime.”

Admirals drop season opener 8-4 to Lakeshore Canadiens
RTT PHOTO BY RON GIOFU
Amherstburg goalie Evan Smith makes a save during the third period of the Admirals’ 8-4 loss last Friday night in Lakeshore. Smith relieved starting goalie Jared Ratko in the third period. By Ron Giofu This year's group of Amherstburg Admirals are younger than in years
past and they were taught some lessons last Friday night by a veteran Lakeshore squad. The two-time defending PJHL Stobbs
Division champion Canadiens knocked off the Admirals 8-4 at the Atlas Tube Centre. The Admirals kept it close for two periods, trailing 2-1 after 20 minutes and 5-4 after 40 minutes, but the host Canadiens pulled away in the third period by outscoring Amherstburg 3-0 over the final 20 minutes. Christian McBride, Patrick Godin, Max Clifford and captain Broden Meloche scored in a losing effort for the Admirals. Starting goalie Jared Ratko was pulled after the seventh Lakeshore goal with Evan Smith allowing the eighth goal in just under nine minutes of action. It was the first game of the season for the Admirals but the second for Lakeshore, who had won 2-1 in Essex last Tuesday night. “Neither goalie was good tonight,” believed Amherstburg head coach Paul Bortignon. “There were 12 goals on something like 40 shots.” Bortignon said the Admirals had “spurts of offence” in Friday night's Jr. C hockey game, noting that was keyed primarily by the line of Clifford, Broden Meloche and Kyle Meloche. He said McBride was likely the team's best
player through the first ten minutes of the game but he got hurt after that. The Admirals learned what they have to do to get better and Bortignon said that includes the coaches. “As a staff, we have a lot of work to do, that's for sure,” he said. Godin scored his first Jr. C goal, so Bortignon said that was good to see. “As a group, we got overwhelmed a bit by a veteran team,” he said. “They are two-time defending champs and poised for a third with the way they played tonight.” The Admirals aren't hitting the panic button after one game, Bortignon added, but they do have to get better and expects to have better, more competitive practices this week in preparation for this weekend's games. He thinks the loss in Lakeshore should be motivation for his team. The next game for Amherstburg is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Dresden. The home opener for the Admirals is this Sunday at 7 p.m. with the Mooretown Flags being the opponent at the Libro Centre. The Admirals play five of their first six regular season games on the road.

Christ Anglican Church hosts 200th anniversary gala By Ron Giofu
People dressed in their Sunday best to head to Christ Anglican Church even though it was a Saturday evening. As part of its 200th anniversary celebrations, Christ Anglican Church hosted a gala outside the church that saw over 55 people attend. The formal festivities were held under a tent and featured a musical performance from the Chatham-Kent based group “Canto in Armonia” following the dinner prepared by chef Dennis Rogers. Father Bill Strang said they had people attend not only from Amherstburg, but from elsewhere as well. “We've got people from Amherstburg and from some of the deanery communities within different parts of Essex County,” he said. Proceeds from the 200th anniversary gala will be reinvested back into the church. “The big news is the weather held up,” said Father Strang. While there were bouts of rain at points during the day, by the time the evening came around, the rain was out of the area.
“It's the first time we've done anything like this,” he added. “Aside from a picnic, I can't remember us doing anything outside like this.” Given it was the church's anniversary, Father Strang said it was important to have the gala on site and not in a hall, but noted they needed the tent as the church doesn't accommodate this size of a gala. “I'm pleased that everything seems to be going well,” he said Saturday evening. This is the latest in a string of 200th anniversary events that Christ Anglican Church has held and more are on the horizon. Good Shepherd Lutheran Day Care celebrates a decade A local day care centre celebrated its tenth year with a barbecue and open house last week. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Day Care marked its decade of being in business last Thursday at their day care, located within the church at the corner of Concession 3 North and Alma St. Supervisor Amanda Deslippe said they had the barbecue, bouncy castle, face painting, games and more to allow families to come and enjoy the facility. They also painted “Kindness Rocks”
with inspirational messages that will be placed in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church rock garden. Deslippe said the enrolment numbers fluctuate but she believes they are at the largest number of students they’ve had in a while. That said, she said they offer a good learning environment. “We have smaller class sizes,” said Deslippe. “Families really enjoy that.” Good Shepherd Lutheran Day Care currently has seven people on staff with the open house featuring a mix of current parents and children along
with some new faces. There are between 3040 children enrolled at the day care, she added. “The members of the church came out too, which is good,” said Deslippe.

Mary Coombs, wife of Amherstburg native Jason Coombs, makes a brigadeiro in the kitchen of her Toronto shop. Jason and Mary, Jason being a former Amherstburg resident, will be on Dragons Den Oct. 4 on CBC. By Ron Giofu A man originally from Amherstburg will be appearing on the CBC series “Dragon's Den” early next month. Jason Coombs and his wife Mary operate the shop “Mary's Brigadeiro” in their home city of Toronto and they soon could be getting a boost from the “dragons” depending on what happens on the show, which is scheduled to air Oct. 3. “It was a pretty crazy experience,” said Coombs of getting on the show. “We hadn't planned on doing a pitch.” Coombs said they were contacted “out of the blue” on a Thursday as spots were open to appear on the show. “Their main people followed Mary's story and thought it would be a good idea,” said Coombs. Their appearance was approved the following day and they were on the show the next Sunday filming, which was Mother's Day weekend. “It was one day after the other,” said Coombs. Mary was featured on a popular CBC Radio show and that led to a busy weekend, the same weekend they were putting together their “Dragon's Den”
pitch. “It was a crazy weekend,” said Coombs. Viewers will have to tune into the show to see what happens next. Coombs met his wife while he lived in Brazil, and he moved there in 2008. Mary and her mother would make brigadeiros, a Brazilian treat that is comparable to a chocolate truffle only with one smooth texture. “Mary learned from watching their mother who did it as a means to survive,” said Jason. Mary learned the craft, and after she provided some of her brigadeiros to a friend's wedding, she discovered it was a passion for her. It led to an online business and trips to markets and now they have their own shop. “It's going to be pretty crazy (to watch) the show,” he said. They want to bring the Brazilian treat to as many cultures as possible, he added, and “Canada is a melting pot that allows us to do that.” He said they are in the process of creating new flavours and they also sell to cafes and fine food stores. “It's our life right now,” said Coombs.

The Amherstburg Admirals held their annual golf tournament Sunday at Sutton Creek Golf Club in McGregor. The winning team with a score of 60 were Jeff Quenneville, Rob St. Germain, Mark Muzzin and Matt St. Germain. By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Admirals traded their hockey sticks for golf clubs Sunday as a way to raise money to fund their operations. The local PJHL Stobbs Division Jr. C hockey club hosted its “Fall Classic” golf tournament at Sutton Creek Golf Club near McGregor with proceeds going to fund team operations. Co-owner Wes Ewer was pleased with how things turned out. “We had 18 full groups, 72 total,” said Ewer, who owns the team with Matt Fox and Gaspare Spada. “It was a really good turnout.” Most of the players, including some of the new additions, either golfed or volunteered in some fashion. “With a lot of new guys, to get them to step up right away, that's awesome,” said Ewer. “We're glad they are buying into the Admirals family.” A lot of families took part in the tournament, Ewer added. He said the number of golfers is similar to previous years, perhaps up slightly, and they received a lot of donations and support from local businesses. “It makes for a really fun day,” he said. They also were supported by Mother Nature. “The weather couldn't have been better,” said Ewer. “We definitely lucked out with the weather.” The Admirals hope to raise $4,000-$4,500, he added, and that will fund team operations. That includes team outings, ice time, buses and other expenses necessary to run a Jr. C hockey franchise. “It's definitely one of our largest fundraisers,” said Ewer. Ewer also thanked Sutton Creek Golf Club, all of the volunteers, and particularly his mother Mary as she is the driving force behind organizing the golf tournament. The winning team with a score of 60 were Jeff Quenneville, Rob St. Germain, Mark Muzzin and Matt St. Germain. The women's closest to the pin contest was won by Brenda Couch while Mary Ewer won the women's longest drive. Admirals captain Broden Meloche won the men's longest drive while Udo Kiewitz won the men's closest to the pin. Josh Talerico, an assistant captain, won the putting contest.
