A sold-out crowd of 180 people packed the Libro Centre’s community room last week to hear from a worldrenowned urbanist and his ideas to make Amherstburg an even better place. Gil Penelosa, founder and chair of 8 80 Cities and chair of World Urban Parks, was in Amherstburg last Tuesday night where he spoke to the large crowd about his ideas on how to make the town better for all age groups. Penelosa was invited to town by the Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) with it being the The band “Black Orchid” ACF’s first of three planned events in its performed at “Ribs “Thought Leaders” series. & Ragtime” President “We must(above). create cities differently from Monty Logan (second what we are doing,” saidfrom Penelosa. “We left)toaccepts OTF cheque have recreatethe cities around people.” from team member Dan Allen, Penelosa called for Amherstburg to Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy “be bold” and promoted bicycling and Hatfieldnoting and Essex Taras walking, thoseMPP are the most popular (right). for people. ranking of Canadian municipalities, Penelosa noted that “you were behind some of your neighbours” and quipped that he wishes Amherstburg was ranked 324th. “That would have been like an electrical shock,” he said. “You would have been like ‘we have to do something.’” Penelosa believed there is too much parking within Amherstburg and that speed limits are “way too high.” He recommended that speeds in residential neighbourhoods be lowered to 30 km/hr and if that were to happen, he predicted that a greater mix of cyclists and walkers would use the roadways. “People don’t want to walk where people can go 50 or 60 km/hr,” he said. Walking and cycling improve not only physical health, but mental health and social interaction as well, he said. Roadways are public spaces and can be used by everyone, he believed. He also called for more occasions of open streets for pedestrians and cyclists as if the streets are opened to people, “that’s when the magic happens.”
