GO INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOOD NEWS TO EVERYONE. MARK 16:15
At the end of Matthew’s gospel, we find one of the most well-known sermons of all time. It is the pinnacle of Jesus’ teaching, and it serves as the foundational purpose of the Church. The message, while short, gives a clear call with firm direction—GO! have a goal of sending 500 missionaries overseas for at least a year to bring the gospel to anyone who has not yet heard. It doesn’t matter how big a church is, that’s a God-number! And we are committed to seeing it through because we are not only a giving church, but also a sending church.
Notice this is not a suggestion or an option–this is an imperative. The go is the call; the go is the Great Commission. To accomplish such a significant task, every bit of our resources and talents are brought to the table. No longer is our best reserved for the home team. Our best is sent first in order to accomplish the go. People give, people are sent, and people go. The cycle repeats itself time after time as the church surges forward to reach every tribe, language, people, and nation.
As of today, more than 93 individuals, representing seniors, couples, and families, have already been sent. All because the emphasis is on the go! I love the way the Message paraphrases Matthew 9: “Later when Jesus was eating supper at Matthew’s house with his close followers, a lot of disreputable characters came and joined them. When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus’ followers. ‘What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riffraff?’ Jesus, overhearing, shot back, ‘Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? Go figure out what this Scripture means: “I’m after mercy, not religion.” I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.’”
At River Valley, it probably comes as no surprise that we are all about the go. Through our Global Teams, people experience God moving around the world in ways that often change their hearts forever. In fact, my desire is for everyone at River Valley to go on a Global Team within three years or as soon as you are able. The best part about being part of the go is there are no prerequisites. You simply have to step into the yes and go, and that’s biblical! Did you know the first missionary who was sent out was the demonpossessed man, called Legion? Moments after his salvation, Jesus told him to go to the Ten Cities and give a testimony of his salvation–merely moments before, he was naked and violent–not a whole lot of qualification or preparation there. All that matters is he was commissioned by Jesus to share his story.
My prayer is that God would help us to focus on the go, that He would reorient each of us to invite outsiders and reach the least of these near, far, and to the ends of the earth. The church was never meant to be inward-focused. We were created and commissioned to go, so let’s grab that vision together and change the world!
When there is this kind of emphasis on the go, people are consistently sent out! At River Valley, we

Reaching the entire world with the good news of Jesus Christ is a big task but it’s what Jesus asked all His followers to do. This mission is our Global Project. At River Valley Church, Global Project is what we call our global missions efforts. Through Global Project we all have the opportunity to participate in this great mission that Jesus Christ asked us to be a part of.

There are more than 2.9 billion people in the world who have little or no access to the gospel. Of the more than 2. 9 billion unreached people in the world today, about 97% live in the 10/40 Window. The 10/40 Window is a term used to describe a region of the world within 10 and 40 degrees latitude from Western Africa to Eastern Asia. But by choosing to make our heart global, and because of the generostiy of our church, together we are changing those statistics.

Preparation for the trip was difficult for Michael and Liz. Both of them were very dedicated to their careers, which required long hours every day of the week. Liz is a brain cancer researcher at the University of Minnesota and Michael owns several businesses. How were they supposed to unplug? Michael and Liz knew that to be active and present members of the team, they needed to be able to fully focus on God, the team, and each other.
“Nope, no interest. You go. You can tell me about it when you get back.” That was Michael Antolik’s response whenever his wife, Liz, spoke about Global Teams. Liz wanted to join a team, but only if they could go together. And they were both very busy people with full schedules. Michael and Liz were sitting in their usual spot near the aisle one Sunday in 2016, when Pastor Anthony announced that he and his wife, Mandy, would be leading a team to Egypt.
In Egypt, they joined in fellowship and prayer with their host team. The missionaries they went to support prayed over them, and they experienced the same powerful presence of God that filled them with boldness and courage to respond to God’s call. Liz, who always felt a bit shy about sharing her faith, became eager to tell others about Jesus and began to think about how she might use her gifts on the mission field.
“You’re going,” a voice said into Michael’s ear. “You’re going.” Just like that. Two words. Michael knew God was speaking to him and, in that moment, he knew he was going to Egypt. He smiled at Liz, but didn’t know what to do next. In the car on the way home, Liz shared that she had decided to join the Egypt team. It wasn’t until that afternoon during a bike ride together that Michael felt able to reply. “Lizzie, I think we should go to Egypt together,” Michael said over his shoulder. “What? Are you sure?” she asked, shocked. Michael nodded. “God spoke to me, so we’re going. It doesn’t matter what I think. I will be obedient to God.” As they pedaled along, he told Liz about God’s two audible words to him and how they had changed his attitude. Michael suggested they go home and sign up immediately before the trip filled up!
“We had traveled thousands of miles,” Michael and Liz agreed, “leaving work behind to take the opportunity to be still and listen to what God was trying to reveal to us–a path for our future.” Michael had been meditating on Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” And while in Egypt, he wrote this in his journal: “I make appointments for everything else, why not God?”
“IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT I THINK. I WILL BE OBEDIENT TO GOD.” MICHAEL ANTOLIK

2019-2020 GLOBAL TEAMS OVERVIEW
SOMEWHERE FOR EVERYONE Every month, teams of volunteers from River Valley Church travel around the world to help meet physical and spiritual needs and share the love of Jesus Christ.
INDIA
It is our goal that every person in our church goes on a Global Team within three years of coming to River Valley Church. Global Teams can cost as little as $400 for a weekend team or as much as $4000 for a longer 10-12 day team. No matter how long or how much, going is always worth the investment.

Christian teaching, medical care, and play. And, of course, they danced.
Angie and Brian Bomgren discovered this firsthand in 2009. At the time, Angie felt a little too new and disconnected at River Valley to take the step of traveling with a group of strangers to a far-away place. But Brian felt confident and told God that he was “willing to follow Him anywhere, just not to Africa.”
Brian, a typical reserved Minnesotan, led the African children in dance! He may have been out of his comfort zone, but photos show him with a broad, joyful smile, dancing and hoisting multiple boys onto his shoulders.
But, together, they stepped nervously forward in obedience. They raised the money and signed up to join the 2009 Swaziland Team. A few months later, they were in a vehicle rumbling along African roads in one of the world’s poorest countries. What at first looked like a sacrifice, became a rewarding opportunity.
“It was our first big step of obedience as a couple,” Angie said. “It wasn’t easy, but it led to a deeper understanding of God’s heart. We acquired a new perspective as well as some solid friendships!” For Angie and Brian, the rewards of their sacrifice to go on a Global Team run deep: a deeper compassion for people in need, an increased willingness to give, step out, go, and lead.
“Being away from phones, work and familiar things gave us a chance to grow,” Angie said. “The leadership made sure we were well taken care of. They made it fun and relaxing. We became close on a deep level.”
That first step of obedience in 2009 led Angie and Brian to go on more Global Teams and serve at the Global Project display during the weekends.
The team spent time in the mornings and evenings, sharing as a group, praying, decompressing, and reflecting. Relationships within the group grew stronger each day, and a spiritual bond unified them. There, in the remote backcountry of Africa, they experienced a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
“
Each day, they went out to assist missionaries at various care points. Orphans came from miles away, some carrying siblings on their backs, to receive a daily meal provided by Feed My Starving Children. They also facilitated school sessions,

that will last the entire trip, and break them in before you leave to avoid blisters.
BIBLE AND JOURNAL Keep your journal handy to record your experiences and what God is teaching you.
MEDICAL KIT You never know what bumps, bruises or bites you’ll encounter, so include a small medical kit in your backpack. Make sure you have enough of your daily prescriptions to last the duration of your trip and carry them in their pharmacysupplied bottle.
CASH AND DEBIT/CREDIT CARD Find out how to best obtain the local currency when you are traveling, whether through debit, credit, or cash. If you plan on using plastic, don’t forget to call your bank to see if your cards will work internationally. Let them know the dates and location of your trip to avoid suspicious activity alerts on your account.
ADAPTER PLUG CONVERTER
AND
VOLTAGE
Electrical outlets are shaped differently all around the world. You will likely need an adapter plug to use them. Additionally, your electronics might be made for a specific voltage different from the power supply. To avoid frying anything, check to see if you need to pack a voltage converter.
PASSPORT Keep your passport on you when traveling. There is no need to bring your social security card or birth certificate, so it’s best to keep those documents safe at home.
NECESSARY AND APPROPRIATE CLOTHING
SMALL FLASHLIGHT AND BATTERIES
Take time to think critically about what clothes you really need for your trip. Pack the essentials. Remember, less is more. You will need clothes to work in, for out-and-about excursions, and for church. Familiarize yourself with modesty standards and typical dress for someone your age and gender.
A flashlight is not necessary until it is. Be prepared and pack a small one in your backpack.
CAMERA Capturing photos is a great way to remember your trip. Before you start snapping away, though, ask your team leader(s) or a long-term missionary what pictures are appropriate to take and where. Remember, photos should always be taken with permission and in the context of relationship.
LINENS AND TOILETRIES You might be able to purchase some personal items in-country. Ask your host if you need to pack your own sheets and towels for your trip. But you definitely need to bring your own toothbrush.
CARRY-ON TIP Pack all prescription medicine, essential toiletries and a change of clothes as well as reading material, snacks and music.
COMFORTABLE WALKING SHOES Once in-country, most of your travel will be on foot. Invest in a comfortable pair of walking shoes

GLOBAL PROJECT VOLUNTEERS
River Valley Church is home to some of the most incredible people. They respond to God’s call, step forward, and offer their gifts of time and talents; we hesitate to call them “volunteers” because they are obeying God’s prompting.

David Hyde is a good example. His experience on a Global Team impacted him and his family. He wanted to help others have the same great Global Team experience, but his restaurant career didn’t allow time to volunteer during evenings and weekends. When he heard he could come in early in the mornings to help out with Global Project, he stepped forward. That was over four years ago.
When there is a crisis in the world today, volunteers will come from continents away to fill any need. Then, when the urgent need has been filled, the volunteers go home and return to normalcy. At River Valley, our amazing volunteers stay and continue to work, serving God by supporting the mission of our church. Some of these incredibly dedicated people are serving with Global Project. Behind the scenes, they are doing vital work, and their enthusiasm and commitment are inspiring others to do the same. Author Bob Goff calls these people “the secretly incredible.” They’re the real salt of the earth Jesus talked about. We would not be able to fulfill our expanding global vision without them.
“I’ve done a wide variety of projects over the years,” David said. “I helped keep track of missionary newsletters. I helped sort and choose photos from teams that were returning. I’ve done data entry, spreadsheet work, and helped with printing and scanning documents. I’m currently working on team financials and setting up materials for new teams going out.”
Rachel Schumacher, a River Valley staff member, coordinates Global Project volunteers. Rachel says, “Usually the biggest step for them is to say that first ‘yes’ to the call God has spoken to them. It can be a bit scary. But once they do, they thrive!” And, she adds, “Some have served in Global Project over four years! This is the way they can see the need firsthand–the vision and the impact they are having in helping change the world. They are the rock stars of Global Project. We would not be able to do it without them; it takes the Body of Christ to keep advancing. Without them, we would not be able to keep sending teams around the world. We will not be able to send out 500 missionaries from River Valley, and we will not be able to increase participation in our Explore* groups.”
David says, “I get to use talents that I have that I can’t use in my profession. I feel respected for the work I do and appreciated around the office. The department is so well run that it is a pleasure to work there. I am able to serve God, help make a difference in other people’s lives and grow personally.” Danelle Carlson also was prompted by God to help out at River Valley after she and her husband went on a Global Team. Danelle says, “I love talking about Global Teams, dreaming about Global Teams, and am always wanting to help get teams ready by doing some of the behind-the-scenes work. It fills my heart with joy.” Some of the tasks Danelle assist with are preparing name tags for team meetings,

preparing passport labels, packing bags with t-shirts, preparing journals, and providing water bottles. “To be honest,” she says, “at my regular job it can feel dark. However, going to help with Global Project always puts a skip in my step, and I walk away with joy. I feel like I’m working with family. I love being part of something that’s way bigger than me.”

Dianne Belski was invited by her friend, Pastor Lindsay Willis, to come in and help with a project. Soon she was coming in every Wednesday. From the inside, she got to witness the growth of Global Project over several years. “I work with Global Project staff and help mainly with passports. Dealing with someone’s identity is a serious job. There’s no room for error, and this suits me as I enjoy the routine and attention to detail. I am blessed to volunteer. I pray for the people whose passports I touch. I see and hear amazing stories as the teams come home. Because of our work, people are meeting Jesus for the first time. Wow! That is a blessing!” These are just a few stories of the many people who work on the inside to help Global Project reach out to the world. As simple as these tasks seem, these volunteers give their time, allowing others to reach out with the good news of Jesus. Interested in volunteering? Connect with the Global Project team by emailing globalproject@rivervalley.org or calling 952.255.8800 and plug into an area that suits you. Simple tasks you do “in secret” will result in incredible results. Bring your gifts and talents. You are an incredible member of the body of Christ.

Even if you have only been at River Valley Church for a short time, there is little doubt you haven’t heard that Our Heart is Global. Through the dozens of Global Teams sent out and hundreds of missionaries receiving support, there are so many ways for people to actively participate in Christ’s global mission. differently. It’s helped them see the world through God’s lens and broadened their perspectives in a whole new way.

Explore is one of our three Core Groups (Alpha, Freedom, Explore) focused on discovering a global heart through understanding the biblical vision for missions and how we all have a critical role in expanding the Kingdom of God. You will also have the opportunity to hear real-life stories and ask questions of River Valley-supported missionaries serving around the world. Explore brings our global heart to life!

RIVER VALLEY FUTURE 500 We believe that it should be the mission of all Christians to participate in taking the good news of Jesus Christ to the entire world (Matthew 28:18-20). For many, they will become reliable supporters and senders, but it is our sincere prayer that God will raise up and send out hundreds from River Valley Church who are willing to say, “here am I Lord, send me,” to those who have yet to hear. Our vision is to raise up and send out 500 missionaries. We call them our “Future 500.”

“It was never a question for me. Jesus lived missionally so I must live missionally.”
in that moment that the Lord wanted her to walk with Him among unreached people in Cairo. Immediately came the doubts and questions about how it would be possible to be a missionary, especially with the obstacle of student loans. Quincy made a promise to the Lord that she would work for as long as it took to pay off her loans in order to go to Cairo, unless He provided another way.
It all started with a short-term trip where Quincy learned about the areas of the world where the majority of unreached people live, people who have never once heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and with no access to the truth. She prayed, “Lord, if you call me to the nations, please call me to those places.”
One morning at church, a family that knew about the call on Quincy’s life approached her and shared that they felt God has asked them to make it possible for her to get to Cairo as soon as possible. As a result, this family committed to take on the burden of her loans, making it possible for Quincy to move forward in her calling. The Lord had provided a miraculous way forward.
Quincy took steps to serve wherever she could. Her obedience opened the door for her to serve Somali classmates that she came into contact with at the University of Minnesota. She found that her heart came alive among these people who did not know the love of Jesus. At River Valley, Quincy served in GoKids; she picked up the Sunday morning doughnut holes and served with the youth ministry. Through all of this, she realized that the Lord was growing her in new and different ways by serving others.
It struck Quincy that God was teaching her the power of partnering with others on this journey. “Because we are the body of Christ, when one of us steps out and goes, we all go,” Quincy said. “We are all impacted if we play the role that God is asking us to.”
When she heard about the opportunity to join a Global Team to Cairo, she knew it was her next step. It was in Cairo, at the grave of the missionary William Borden, she felt the Lord call her. It was not a call to a task or an assignment, as might be expected; it was a call to simply walk with her Heavenly Father one step at a time. And she knew
The Lord wants everyone involved in His mission of reaching lost people, and if each person walks in obedience, a great tapestry is woven together, and God’s great commission becomes realized.
“NOW YOU ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST, AND EACH ONE OF YOU IS A PART OF IT…” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:27

MISSIONARY ACTION PLAN (MAP) We have created a MAP (Missionary Action Plan) as a starting point to explore missions at a deeper level. It is not intended to be an all-inclusive missionary training guide, but it will help build a strong missions foundation. The MAP has been created based on the recommendations of a variety of veteran missionaries, professors and missions pastors. It is suitable for someone set on serving the Lord as a missionary as well as someone who wants to be more educated about missions. As someone progresses through the MAP, an interest in sending may be deepened, a calling may be confirmed, but, most definitely a heightened awareness will be established. Knowing that God’s timing is perfect and that each journey will look different, there is not a set pace to complete the MAP. It is designed to take 12-24 months to complete. The goal: to give all the glory to Jesus Christ as we spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. To request more information about the MAP, email globalproject@ rivervalley.org or check out details online by visiting rivervalley. org/ministries/globalproject/map/.

In order to realize the vision of sending out 500 missionaries from River Valley, there needs to be an army of people who are committed to actively supporting that vision–people who are committed to seeing the 500 sent out in the strength of knowing that there is someone who will be lifting them up in prayer and reminding them of the call on their life.
At River Valley we have dozens of people who have started out on the path to being one of our Future 500. People who are willing to leave what they know and go to the unknown of a new place overseas in order to bring the gospel to unreached people. Starting out on a new path into uncharted territory can be a daunting task. It will be exciting, challenging, and faith-building. Encountering the unknown and unexpected is a sure thing. Here at River Valley, we applaud those who are saying “yes” to this call, and we celebrate their obedience, but we have no intention of sending them out on this path alone. We know that the Lord goes before them to prepare the road ahead, and we have a plan to place people in their lives who will walk this road with them. We call these people our Global Advocates.
We may not all be sent to “go” long term, but we are all called to play a part in the Great Commission of bringing the gospel to every nation. And if people are willing to give everything up to go, then many of us can say “yes” to becoming a Global Advocate and partnering with one of the Future 500. The only requirement to become a Global Advocate is the willingness to commit your time and energy to be a coach, pray, and support those in the process of becoming a missionary. It might look like getting together for coffee periodically, being available for a phone call, or sending an encouraging text. These seemingly simple gestures can mean a world of difference to the person who is stepping into uncharted territory. Your willingness to be a Global Advocate could be the answer to prayer for one of our Future 500.
Throughout River Valley, there are individuals and families who carry the passion for fulfilling the mission of reaching the globe for Jesus, and they use this passion to support those who are able to go. The road to becoming a missionary involves many steps, including deciding where to serve, preparing your heart and mind for a new culture, raising funds, training, planning, and much more. The role of a Global Advocate is to come alongside the future missionary during this process and take an active role in encouraging, listening, supporting, and praying every step of the way.

MALVA PUDDING
CULTURE: SWAZILAND
INGREDIENTS FOR THE PUDDING
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a stand mixer (or hand-held beater) combine sugar and eggs and beat until thick and lemon colored.
3/4 CUP SUGAR
Mix in the apricot jam and beat.
2 LARGE EGGS 1 TBSP APRICOT JAM (OR PRESERVES, CHOPPED VERY FINE) *5 OZ ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR 1 TSP BAKING SODA 1/2 TSP SALT 1/3 CUP MILK 1 TSP VINEGAR 1 GENEROUS TBSP BUTTER
In another bowl, sift together the flour, b.soda and salt. In a smaller bowl, combine the milk, vinegar and butter. Alternate adding milk mixture and flour mixture into eggs and sugar. Beat well until combined thoroughly. Pour into a 9x9 in. oven-proof dish and cover with foil (very important) Bake for 45-50 minutes. In the meantime, make the sauce.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE SAUCE *3 1/2 OZ BUTTER 3/4 CUP CREAM OR MILK (BOTH WORK!) 3 OZ SUGAR 1/3 CUP HOT WATER 1 TSP VANILLA EXTRACT
Over medium heat melt butter. Mix in cream, sugar, water and take off heat. Stir in vanilla. Spoon over warm, baked pudding. *Notes: It’s best to weigh the flour and sugar on a kitchen scale. 3 1/2 ounces butter is approximately 7 tablespoons. Hot Malva pudding is usually accompanied with custard.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE CUSTARD 1 C WHOLE MILK OR HEAVY CREAM 1/2 C SUGAR 4 EGG YOLKS, BEATEN 1 TSP VANILLA EXTRACT
In a saucepan over medium high heat, whisk milk/cream and sugar continuously until it starts to bubble but does not reach the boil point. Temper the the egg yolks by slowly streaming a couple of ladles of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, being careful not to scramble the eggs (I take my milk off the heat during this process). Pour egg mixture back into the saucepan, and again over medium heat, whisk until custard starts to reach a thick consistency, where it will be able to coat the back of a spoon (160°-170° F on heatsafe thermometer, about 8 minutes). Stir in vanilla. Strain custard through a fine-mesh sieve, if needed. 57

Remove pumpkin with a little of the broth and puree in the blender. Return fresh pumpkin to pot and add potatoes, cabbage, turnip, carrots, parsley and hot pepper (be careful not to break the skin of the pepper, as it is very hot). Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer until the vegetables are almost done. If using frozen or canned pumpkin, add at this time. Add the spaghetti and lime juice. Bring to a boil again and cook until spaghetti is done, about 10 min. Remove pepper and stir to blend ingredients. Adjust seasoning to taste.
1 TBSP LIME JUICE
HISTORICAL INFORMATION During the fight for Haitian Independence in the early 1800’s, the French forces would not allow the slaves to eat pumpkin soup because it was considered too sophisticated a delicacy for the slaves’ pedestrian palates. So, when Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti a free republic in January of 1804 (making them the world’s first black-led free republic), pumpkin soup became a symbol of Haitian freedom from oppression. Now, every year Haitians make this delicious Pumpkin soup recipe in January in celebration of Haitian Independence Day!
