Jersey City’s Eddie Harris shoots STEPS, an Indie film about One Man’s Quest for Love and Redemption

By Sally Deering

ddie Harris grew up in Jersey City and as a writer and filmmaker he sometimes looks to his neighborhood for inspiration. Harris found it one day when he noticed a young man in a wheelchair, who had become partially paralyzed from an altercation after years of hustling on the streets. When Harris wondered how a person could rise above that kind of life-changing experience, he took to his computer and began writing STEPS, his new movie now being filmed on locations throughout Jersey City.

“The movie is about redemption, recovery, forgiveness and love,” Harris says, as he heads to a baseball field in the Lafayette section of Jersey City where the crew is filming. “It’s about a guy who sets out to be the next Johnny Cochran but his life takes a terrible turn. He spirals downward into alcohol and loses everything until a street pastor reaches out to him. It’s a Jersey City story anybody can relate to, an uplifting story.” Filming an indie in the dead of winter is no easy task. Braving frigid temperatures, everyone has a job to do, and the work off-camera is as important as the work on camera. On a recent Monday morning, the crew including the directors, cameramen, soundman, boom operator, line producer, stage manager, board-clapper, still photographer, script supervisor, production designer, make-up staff and security personnel all came together to collaborate, their creative juices fueled by the love of making movies, and lots of doughnuts and coffee. cont’d pg. 5 STEPS writer Ed Harris, right, watches his movie filmed

Jersey City’s Eddie Harris shoots STEPS, an Indie film about One Man’s Quest for Love and Redemption Cont’d from Cover COLLABORATING WITH CAST AND CREW STEPS’ cast and crew are mostly from Jersey City and neighboring towns on this and the other side of the Hudson. The film’s directors are Jay Rodriguez and Rock Davis of Itchy House Productions based in New Jersey, and producer Michael Baumgartner who is funding the project, is Harris’s long-time Jersey City friend. Additional producers are Michael Parris, Greg Ferguson and basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, who will be instrumental when it comes to distributing the film to theaters nationwide.

Harris and directors Rodriguez and Davis and associate producer Penwah chose actor Walter Fauntleroy to play Taj, the film’s protagonist; Tia D. Hodge plays Wendy, the leading female role, and Rob Morgan plays Brian, whose life takes a downward turn after an incident in his old neighborhood. “Rob has the range and attitude to bring Brian’s character to life,” Harris says. “We want the audience to feel for him, to root for him.” Waiting for his close-up, actor Bill Sorvino – who is also head of the Golden Door International Film

BICYCLIST

Contd from page 4 Greenfield traveled through Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally California. “I made a trip to the Grand Canyon and saw a lot of wild animals like deer, possum, armadillo, and coyotes,” Greenfield says. During the trip, Greenfield had four flats, made 43 stops, and rode in rain, harsh winds, and hot weather. He kept his expenses low with food and lodging, but that didn’t prevent him from stopping at Olive Garden to fuel up on carbs. On Oct. 30, his 24th birthday, Greenfield treated himself to two pizzas in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Greenfield averaged 50 to 130 miles a day and

Greenfield in St.Louis would take two 20-minute breaks on a typical day. Along the way, passers-by cheered for him, Greenfield says, even giving donations and buying him meals. And on Day 50, Greenfield accomplished his goal. “I am proud of my accomplishment,” Greenfield says. “This trip showed me how resourceful I am to planning and being mentally pushed beyond limits.” To see pictures of Henry Greenfield’s trip and for more info, go to www.henryonabike.tumblr. com.

well; it’s going to build a lot of people’s careers.” There’s no doubt Harris’s filmmaking career is on the rise, motivated by his desire to affect people through storytelling.

THE RIGHT STEPS All film sets, whether they’re Indies or big movie studio blockbusters have what is known as the craft services table run by a caterer who brings in food for the cast and crew. For STEPS, Arelius Ingram of Unique Catering of Jersey City runs the craft services table. “Today, we’re serving angus steak with mushroom sauce, fried whiting, stuffed shells with marinara sauce, rice, baby cabbages and garden salad,” Ingram says. Script Supervisor Laura Bailey and Production Designer Yoko Morishita both say they enjoy working on the film. Al Thomas of Jersey City, who is in charge of security, says he’s having a blast. “It’s been great,” Thomas says. “A lot of fun.” HIS DAD’S INFLUENCE A former actor, Harris’s father, Eddie Harris, Sr,

at Trenton State College, Harris went to work for a video production company. A random meeting with Ray Murphy, President of Eddie Murphy Productions, helped Harris change focus from directing to screenwriting after he read the script to NUTTY PROFESSOR 2. Harris’s previous film, HOUSE OF BODIES, stars Queen Latifah who was also executive producer, Terrence Howard and Peter Fonda, who starred in the cult classic EASY RIDER. Harris’s film ZOO was his first attempt as a screenwriter. He now runs his own production company EBH Productions from his Indiegogo offices on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. “Because of my relationships and contacts, I’m doing three films this year and all with major stars,” Harris says.

“I make movies because I want to create good stories,” he says. For more info, visit Eddie Harris’s page on Facebook: https://m.facebook. com/eddie.harris.902.

One of those relationships helped Harris make STEPS. Producer Michael Baumgartner, who has known Harris for many years, decided to back Harris’s film because, frankly, he recognized Harris’s talents. “I believe in Eddie and everybody around him believes in him,” Baumgartner says. “I’ve been so impressed with his work over the years, I couldn’t understand why a guy like this isn’t in Hollywood. Hoboken Comedy Festival teaches Children to be Funny! HCF Improv Comedy Classes For Kids in 2015 Fresh off the successful events of 2014 which featuring over 100 comedians over 8 days and having raised over $3000 for charity the Hoboken Comedy Festival launches the next step in its comedy progression: Improv Comedy Classes for Kids. Aimed at children ages 4-12 the new comedy curriculum will focus on “bolstering imagination and creativity” rather than a distinct desire for comedic invention says Dan Frigolette, creator of the Hoboken Comedy Festival. “Kids are naturally comedic and silly, if we can capture that and hone in on it we can really learn a lot and have fun” says Frigolette of the inspiration for the classes. The classes, starting in Hoboken this January will be broken up into four different classes, divided by age and skill level. The fundamental lessons will be based in theater games and group building activities. If successful the Hoboken Comedy Festival will host classes in four semesters separated by season. The six week courses will aim to create group cohesion, imaginative thinking, critical listening, leadership, public speaking, and help to build confidence in its classmates. Each course will end with a final performance displaying the skills each child has picked up through improvised scenes, much like those seen in “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” as well as character work that each child created during the course of the class session. The hope is to create a core of

students who continually learn and perform, and become a large part of the Hoboken Comedy Festival itself. Classes begin with the first ever winter session starting January 20th 2015 in the performance

space at Maxwell’s Tavern please visit: www.HobokenFestival. com, 201.898.0772 Courses cost $250 and $350 for 6 weeks of two hour classes and a final performance.

HEARTY ITALIAN ON GROVE Alex’s Italian Restaurant & Brick Oven Pizza serves Tasty Dinners in a Casual Setting

n September, a new Italian eatery opened up on Grove Street, right off Newark Ave, which seems to be evolving into Jersey City’s very own “Grub Hub”. Former owners of an Italian restaurant in Bridgewater, Alex and Shirin Askander set up a casual and cozy little hub of their own, a place where you can enjoy a nice Italian dinner cooked to order with fresh ingredients. In the restaurant business since 1974, Alex believes the food should be fresh and the customer service friendly and attentive. “We offer a special hospitality,” Alex says.

“During dinner service, my wife is the hostess, and I go table- to-table to greet our customers. We offer friendly service and excellent, very tasty Italian and American food. Our dinner portions are so big, you can take home what you can’t finish and have it for lunch the next day.” The menu is as big as the portions; here’s just a sampling of appetizers, soups, salads and entrees: Appetizers include Fresh Mozzarella served with tomato, roasted peppers and olives; Fried Calamari; Buffalo Fried Calamari; Zuppa de Mussels and Clams Fradiavlo; Shrimp Cocktail; Clams Casino; Scallops and Shrimp ala Milano, sautéed with fresh tomato and spinach in light cognac

Alex’s Restaurant Cont’d from page 15 Alex’s: “Went here for the first time and thought that the food was super good. Had calamari as an appetizer and it was amazing. Also had Chicken Marsala for the main course which was also really good. Finished it off with Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Lava Cake for dessert. Overall I thought the food was extremely good... (Alex), along with the food, is the main reason I will be going back. What a genuine guy who really cares about the quality of his food and making sure his customers are satisfied. He ended up giving us a $15 dollar gift certificate to come back. As a whole I was really impressed with this place and will be going back.” Karen E. of Jersey City posted this on Yelp: “First review was in October, saying will definitely be back. And we have been! And never have been disappointed in the quality of the food. Even had a picky friend come with us and she ate it all (Pollo Italiana). Looking forward to further exploring the menu... the dishes we had before were still great and I tried the Eggplant Rollatine ... They hit it on the nose! Susie C. of New York posted this on Yelp.com: “I don’t typically write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so after seeing the lack of ratings here. The food tasted great and the

portions were very large - I was only able to eat about a third of my Chicken Italiano dinner. The Chicken Parmesan in particular was very good. The people that work there are also extremely friendly.” You can order take-out through Seamless, grubHub, and Restaurant.com, and Alex caters parties on site like engagement, bachelorette, birthday, anniversary and practically any type of party there is. The restaurant seats 65; and if your party is larger than that, Alex will go off-site and cater your party wherever you like, and he’ll make sure you’re getting the attention you deserve. “Hospitality is very important to me,” Alex says. “Customers need attention. They want to feel like they’re welcome. I always go from table-to-table to make sure they are having a good time.” If you go: Alex’s Italian Restaurant & Brick Oven Pizza 346 Grove St. Jersey City 201-451-4550 Alexsitalianrestaurantpizza.com
