HUDSON HAPPENINGS

Bayonne to Hold Earth Day Clean-Up on Saturday, April 22

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that he and the Bayonne City Council are inviting community members and groups to take part in a citywide Earth Day clean-up in Bayonne on Saturday, April 22. Mayor Davis said, “Earth Day 2023 will provide residents a great opportunity to volunteer to clean up and beautify our city. It’s a day when we can work together building community spirit and a cleaner Bayonne.”

Mayor Davis continued, “There has been an impressive turnout of volunteers throughout the community for our recent Earth Day clean-ups. I look forward to a continuation of that great effort in 2023.”

City officials are inviting individuals, community organizations, and other groups of volunteers to sign up to clean a specific area of the community on Saturday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Interested organizations and individuals are invited to register as a team. People can either form a team to participate, or the organizers can place individuals on a team near where they live. In recent years, various teams, local businesses, and community groups have taken part. Mayor Davis said, “We would like to encourage all of them to sign up again for the 2023 clean-up. We would also welcome new groups and individuals to join in the Earth Day clean-up activities.” Interested groups

and individuals are encouraged to register as soon as possible, in order to get a designated cleanup area. The Department of Public Works is coordinating the clean-up. To register, please contact Kaitlyn McNulty at cleanbayonne@baynj.org or call 201-858-6070.

Teams will be asked to take photos of the garbage bags collected, so that they can be displayed on Facebook. The group with the most garbage bags will win a pizza party with Mayor Davis.

The Glutton, Bayonne’s new litter-consuming machine, will be going around the community during the clean-up and will also be in action at the post clean-up event on the lower level of DiDomenico-16th Street Park.

After taking part in the citywide clean-up, all participating teams and individuals are invited to the Earth Day celebration at the lower level of DiDomenico 16th Street Park, below the foot of West 16th Street, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The park is located between Avenue A and Newark Bay. The celebration will include live musical entertainment by Bayonne’s own Just Jammin.’

Mayor Davis concluded, “We should all help our community and our planet on Earth Day and throughout the year. Let’s have a successful, citywide cleanup on Saturday, April 22.”

‘Big Day’ of birding planned May 7 at Liberty State Park

Bird watching is a fun outdoor activity for people of all ages, and it’s easier than novices may think!

The public is invited to learn the basics of birding on Sunday, May 7, at a “Big Day” cosponsored by New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the Feminist Bird Club of Jersey City. The free event includes bird walks at 6 and 9 a.m.

“We will attempt to identify as many species of birds as we can while having an absolute blast along the way,” said Bill Lynch, director of engagement and communications for New Jersey Conservation Foundation. “No experience is necessary, and we will bring a scope and extra binoculars for participants to borrow.”

Early risers will begin the day at 6 a.m. by following the Waterfront Walk around Caven Point to look for migrating warblers and shorebirds. The route is roughly two miles, with a flat and paved surface.

Those who wish to sleep later will meet at 9 a.m. and bird their way to the northern sections of the park, stopping for lunch and conversation. The guided walk will wrap up in the early to mid-afternoon, but participants are free to stay later. The trail includes roughly a mile of crushed gravel on a flat but uneven surface.

Advance registration is required. To register online, go to www.njconservation.org/event/liberty-

Hudson Theatre

WorksPresents A workshop production of “Son of Zeus” by and starring Jimmy Georgiades

‘Son Of Zeus’ is one man’s journey into the struggles and legacy of his family. A journey fraught with excessive male dominance and abuse.

As the son of a violent Greek immigrant who abused his mother, and the stepson of a mobster incarcerated for armed robbery and manslaughter, can Jimmy exorcise the demons and forge his own path?

Son of Zeus explores the life story of Jimmy and how, against all odds, the scrapes and blows of his rough and tumble early life shaped the character of the man he is becoming. From his childhood in New York City, as the son of an exotic Greek belly dancer and her abusive husband who abandoned them, to his complicated relationship with her new partner who has ties to the Mob and New Jersey, shows his love by teaching him to fight, to the discovery of his siblings in Greece and the unfolding of the artist he never dreamed he could become.

CARR HALL REOPENS WITH A NEW ART SHOW

For the unveiling of the newly renovated Carr Hall, the Arts at St. Paul and Incarnation (ASPI) is pleased to present The Sacred & The Sublime: Works by Katie Niewodowski and Rita Jimenez. These two Hudson County based visual artists masterfully explore the mysteries of life by investigating its various elements, albeit in very different ways.

Niewodowski’s work is a meditation on the phenomenon of life and the creative structures that perpet uate it. She explores the interconnectedness that exists in our universe such as patterns in nature, the body, and mathematics such as the Golden Ratio, fractals, and sacred geometry. Her paintings, draw ings, and sculptures examine the visual representations of this macro and microcosmic field and seek to understand the systems that connect it.

Jimenez, on the other hand, works mostly to explore the mystical and ethereal aspects of life. Found objects such as mirrors, colored glass, and light refl ecting materials like iridescent fi lm, mylar, and fabric are combined with video projections to explore the idea of the Ultimate Feeling. She creates sublime moments that draw inspiration from ethereal and ineff able experiences like dreams, deja vu, and childhood memories, document-ing intimate experiences with natural phenom-ena like prismatic light refractions, glittering water, and diff racted sunlight.

Closed since the onset of COVID, Carr Hall, thanks in part to a grant from Jersey City’s Arts & Culture Trust Fund, now boasts refi nished fl oors, newly painted walls with an art hanging system, a new track lighting system and a handicapped accessible bathroom.

Curated byAmy Neufeld,ASPI is excited to pair these two thrilling artists together in a refreshed space in what is sure to be a thoughtprovoking show.

HUDSON HAPPENINGS

Art House Productions is proud to present “Trans-lucid” - an exhibition of illuminated works by Frank

Ippolito is an artist based in Jersey City. His fascination with the scattering of light passing through a translucent surface is the focus of his latest exhibit.

With “Trans-lucid,” the passage of light through various substrates creates a tension between what is known and what remains a mystery. He uses mixedmedia constructs that combine photography, painting, found objects, and internal illumination. In a few of the pieces, he introduces the element of time and invites the viewer to

become the engine of motion.

The imagery he explores arises from wildly different impulses. In “Trans-lucid” he explores themes of separation and connection - the otherness as well as the humanity of communities that thrive along the margins. Light becomes the absence of shadow. Sound becomes the absence of silence. These are the questions being asked. “Frank’s

alluring work brims with figures recognizable to the Jersey City community, allowing the work to be personal and inviting. The personalities of the figures in the work seem to come from the darkness or fade back into it, leaving the viewer questioning their connection to the world in which they have been placed,” says Art House Gallery Director, Andrea McKenna.
