HUDSON COUNTY ACTRESS TAMMY BLANCHARD’S LATEST ROLE

What’s tougher than taking on the role of a football champion and convicted killer?

How about the part of the football player’s mother?

That’s the challenge that Tammy Blanchard set for herself. The award-winning Bayonne actor plays Terri Hernandez, the mom of Aaron Hernandez, the gifted NFL tight end who made headlines for all the right reasons — until he made them for the wrong ones. “American Sports Story,” a ten-episode miniseries that will air on FX this fall (starting with a two-episode special on Sept. 17), follows Hernandez from his upbringing in a troubled home through his struggles with sexuality and identity to his dazzling success on the gridiron and the violent off-field encounters that were his undoing. It’s an unvarnished look at one of the most infamous athletes of the century, and Blanchard’s conflicted, complicated character is right in the middle of the turmoil.

“True stories are such cautionary tales,” says Blanchard, whose deep performance history includes many emotionally rich portrayals of powerful female characters. “I play a mother who is trying to do her best for her kids, and she’s watching her

dreams and her life fall apart.”

Tammy Blanchard as a young Judy Garland in her 2001 Emmy winning performance Life With Me and Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows her, I stopped going to the gym. I naturally began to gain weight. I started to feel that depression inside.”

Like millions of others, Blanchard watched the documentaries and listened to the podcasts about the life of Aaron Hernandez with a mixture of fascination and horror. When she was cast in “American Sports Story,” she approached her role as she often does: she located a core of compassion within her, and she applied it to her performance.

“I play someone whose life has been a hard one,” says Blanchard, who reminds us that her character never sought the publicity visited on her or her family. “My character has had a history of abusive relationships. Where she grew up and who she ended up marrying — so often she was in muddy waters. I have mercy for her.”

“As I was playing

passes in the Super Bowl. But a little more than a year later, the team cut ties with him after his arrest for the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd.

As a mother herself, Blanchard had no difficulty locating a parent’s sympathy for a troubled child. Aaron Hernandez killed himself in his maximum-security prison cell in 2017, but Blanchard believes that no mother would remember her son as a villain.

“At the end of the day,” she says, “he’ll always be her baby.”

To opposing football players — and even those who lined up on his side — he was nothing so gentle. Instead, he was a force difficult to contain: an explosive receiver with soft hands and a ferocious willingness to deliver a block. Hernandez was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2010; by 2012, he was catching

What went wrong? Why did someone with so much to live for throw it all away? After a postmortem examination of his brain, doctors discovered he was suffering encephalopathy driven by trauma. The speed and impact of modern football may have exacerbated the psychological problems that dogged him from early childhood. The Hernandez home was a turbulent one. Aaron Hernandez felt deep shame about his physical attraction to other men. He both feared and revered his conservative father, who died when Aaron was sixteen.

There was also the ceaseless pressure to succeed, and the expectations of excellence in an endeavor as competitive as football. It reminds Tammy Blanchard of another prodigy who, superficially, couldn’t have been more different from a two hundred pound muscleman: Judy Garland.

“People around you might see you as the golden goose,” says Blanchard, who received an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe nomination for her starring role in “Life With Judy Garland:

Me and My Shadows.” “Everyone sees your talent and tells you how and who to be. It can be hard to figure out who you are. If for the sake of fame and fortune, you can’t be open and honest with yourself, that’s dangerous.

“I think everyone needs to get the message that fame and fortune should not be the end all. Fame is damaging to anybody’s ego and spirit.”

With starring roles on Broadway and in filmed entertainment, Tammy Blanchard has certainly had her share of it. But she’s quick to say that she’s never sold her soul for it, and she’s proud to remain in Bayonne with her family. Besides, the actor notes, the industry has lately rediscovered Hudson County. New studios have opened in her hometown. And to make “American Sports Story,” she didn’t have to travel far. Most of the scenes were shot in Kearny.

“I’m proud to be in a Ryan Murphy production,” says Blanchard of the man behind the Aaron Hernandez miniseries — as well as many other shows, including the innovative “American Horror Story.” “I consider him a master of TV. Decades ago, I was in a pilot of his that never got picked up. I always wanted to work with him again.

“I’m grateful that I finally got that chance.”

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the HCCC Foundation Art The Foundation Art Collection features a rich mosaic of works by Hispanic artists reflecting the College’s robust commitment to supporting Hispanic-American culture.

Renowned American labor leader and Civil Rights activist Cesar Chavez inspired Americans and the world community to work peacefully for social justice. He famously said, “No violencia es nuestra fuerza.” (Translation: Non-violence is our strength). An authentic vintage framed socialjustice campaign button – with Chavez’s image and that quotation – is installed alongside many other items of Americana in a history classroom at Hudson County Community College (HCCC). This educational treasure is a part of the history and cultural heritage collection at the HCCC Foundation Art Collection.

Chavez also stated, “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this nation.” Hudson County Community College (HCCC) and the HCCC Foundation Art Collection seek to embody this ethos each day, and the HCCC Foundation Art Collection proudly reflects this diversity and celebrates the College community’s strong Hispanic presence, featuring 75 permanently installed paintings, sculptures, and limited-edition prints by Hispanic artists. September 15 marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15, making it a great time to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of these Hispanic artists in the HCCC Foundation Art Collection. Over 50% of Hudson County Community College

Francisco Zuniga’s 1977 work, Evelia en un boutique, is displayed on the 5th Floor of the Gabert Library at 71 Sip Avenue and was recently featured in a Museum of Modern Art exhibition catalog.

(HCCC) students identify as Hispanic or Latino. HCCC is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a proud member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), a national organization dedicated to championing the success of Hispanic students in higher education. In 2023, the College was recognized for its excellence in

support of this mission with the organization’s “Outstanding HACUMember Institution Award.”

HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber stated, “Art has the unique power to transcend boundaries and connect us to diverse cultural experiences. Our collection of Hispanic art not only celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of Hispanic artists, but also serves to inspire our students and community.”

The Hispanic heritage experience in the United States ranges from the pampas of Argentina and Uruguay all the way north to Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and everywhere in between, and the Foundation Art Collection reflects that diversity.

The Foundation’s collection of artwork by Hispanic artists also ranges in time from a pre-Columbian (before

1492) sculpture from the Colima Alcarraza culture dating back to 400 B.C., to modernday works from both world-renowned artists like Teresita Fernandez and Picasso, and awardwinning HCCC student artists.

While these works are exhibited throughout HCCC’s Journal Square and North Hudson campuses so that all members of the HCCC community can enjoy them, the third-floor corridor of the Gabert Library at 71 Sip Avenue is dedicated to Hispanic art and features many pieces by prominent Hispanic artists, including Alejandro Anreus and Felix Gonzales-Torres.
