Pro Arts Jersey City announces a new exhibit: National Pastime ART150 Gallery Curated by Susan Evans Grove Dates: Aug 5 - Aug 28, 2022 Pro Arts Jersey City has created an exhibition that celebrates the National Pastime of baseball and how it reflects on American Society. Participating Artists: Ann LePore, K Wiseman, Elise Dodeles, Jennifer Morris, Luis Alves, Frank Ippolito, John Botti, Tarik Mendes, Greg Jezewski, Sydnei Smith Jordan, Donald Rieck,

Susan Evans Grove, Guillermo Bublik, Neal Korn, Akil Roper, Jim Fischer, Kevin McCaffrey, Lucy White Curator’s Statement Baseball is often referred to as America’s Favorite Pastime. Since the first game was played in Hoboken on June 19, 1846, baseball has mirrored the American way of life. When war was upon us and men were sent to foreign soil to fight, women stepped in and played the game just as they stepped into factories to fill the void there. Racism was deeply embedded in the game with a separate Negro League until Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. As

America became faster and bigger, so did baseball. Performance enhancing drugs crept into the dark sides of the game just like they did in everyday life. Artists were invited to submit work that uses baseball in a personal, political, historical, or societal message in order to express what baseball means to them personally and how they think baseball has tracked the progression of American Society over time. About the Curator: Susan Evans Grove Susan Evans Grove is a

DINE, DANCE & DELIGHT IN THE FUN AT LA FESTA ITALIANA 2022 Holy Rosary Church in Jersey City plans to cool down the August heat with a five-day splash of summer fun known as La Festa Italiana 2022. Starting Wednesday, Aug. 10, and running through Sunday, Aug. 14, from 5 pm-to-1l pm each night, the neighborhood surrounding Holy Rosary Church on 6th & Brunswick Streets will be a fun-filled block party of vendors selling a diversity of delicious dishes and dynamic dance bands playing Top-40 hits that promise families and friends fabulous memories to last a lifetime. At La Festa 2022, festival goers can look forward to a great time with the friends and family they missed during the pandemic, CoChairman and La Festa’s Emcee Nick Grillo says, adding, “La Festa has become Jersey City’s favorite summertime event, and when you ask patrons why they love it so much, it’s always the same answer: ‘We never had this growing up.’ It’s wonderful to share our century-old tradition with all the new residents of Jersey City.” Rocking Tunes & Dancing in the Streets Now in its 119th year, La Festa brings community tradition to Jersey City’s Historic Downtown neighborhood with bands performing live every night for festival goers who love to dance or just tap their toes in time to the tunes. This year’s entertainment roster is a Who’s Who of musical talent, and a new band performs each night from 7-11pm. Opening Night, Wed, Aug 10, it’s the Springsteen tribute band, B-STREET BAND. Thurs, Aug 11, THE COUNTERFEITERS. Fri, Aug 12, TOGA PARTY BAND. Sat, Aug 13, THE

CAMEOS; and, on Closing Night, Sun, Aug 14, TOTAL SOUL. Leader of the B-STREET BAND Will Forte says his Springsteen Tribute Band is thrilled to come back to La Festa in Jersey City after so many years of getting to know members of the parish. “I always look forward to Holy Rosary’s La Festa,” Forte says. “We’re a sixpiece, Springsteen tribute band and people like to watch us play. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We just want people to have a good time.” A Foodie’s Paradise La Festa will be “A Foodie’s Paradise” with new food trucks like YOUR SISTERS BALLS, serving homemade meatballs and sauce. Owners of YOUR SISTERS BALLS, mother-daughter team Debra Visciano and Nicole Montecalvo are new to La Festa Italiana. They’ll be serving three types of meatballs with crispy Italian bread to sop up the red gravy. “I heard about La Festa, looked it up online and it looks fabulous,” Visciano says. “The first festival we ever did was San Gennaro in New York City, where we made 5,000 meatballs in three weeks. The recipes were passed down from my grandmother from Naples, and my daughter has a little Sicilian in her, so she puts her twist on the recipe.” It wouldn’t be La Festa without an authentic Italian sausage with peppers and onions on a hard roll and DELLANO’S is back once again to bring festival goers that traditional sandwich. JERSEY& CO. GELATO and MAGLIONE’S ITALIAN ICES will offer cool summer treats. QSINA will serve traditional Philippines BBQ. Pizza

the Wine & Peaches booth again this year. “We had a lot of fun at La Festa last year,” Hennessey says. “We met some new people. It was a blast.” O’Leary’s Public House will also be serving Limoncello shots from a recipe Hennessey has been working on since February: “We keep testing and refining, testing and refining. We’ve got a good batch.” La Festa Sponsors A 501© (3) entity, La Festa continues year-after-year made on the spot is a thanks to financial support specialty of PIE OH MY from our Gold, Silver and PIZZA and it’s wood-fired, Diamond Sponsors. Faithful are invited to return on Mon, Aug 15, at 11 am for the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and again on Tues, Aug 16, as we honor the Feast of San Rocco Healing Mass. Holy Rosary Church’s religious traditions help strengthen the community, the Very Rev. Pastor Jerzy “Jurek” R. Zaslona says, and community fellowship is another highlight of La Festa. “After the pandemic, we were so happy to see La Festa come back to life,” Fr. Jurek says. “People came out in large numbers to enjoy the great food and music and we are hoping to see more friends and families this year. When people come to La Festa, they come for the music and the food, but they also come for the fellowship, to see friends, and create happy memories for their children. We are here to serve the people of Jersey City.” Founded in 1885, Holy Rosary Church is the first Italian Church in New Jersey; and La Festa Italiana is Holy Rosary’s special way of saying thank you to its parishioners and neighbors. The Church will be open for visitors to see up-close the magnificent beauty that is Holy Rosary Church. Visitors are invited to offer a 7-day Memorial Candle before San Rocco or the Blessed Mother in honor of, or in memory of their loved ones. Donation is $10 per candle, and candles will be available in the church vestibule every evening from 5-to-9 pm. Rosary beads, handmade by parishioner Stanley, will be for sale inside the church. MAKING MUSIC

Carlo Santana Earth Wind & Fire, Aug. 14, PNC Bank Arts Center By Dave Gil de Rubio When Carlos Santana released 1999’s

“Supernatural,” it represented the Mexican native’s commercial

pinnacle, selling 15 million copies and racking up eight Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. The spark for this wildfire of crossover success was the smash single “Smooth,” a songwriting collaboration with Matchbox Twenty’s singer Rob Thomas. Twenty-two years later, the duo has gone for a second act. The first single off of Santana’s recently released album “Blessings and Miracles,” is another Santana/Thomas collaboration, called “Move.”. In a press conference with Santana and Thomas (who joined via video), Thomas said after “Smooth,” he and Santana, who is touring this summer with another rather legendary act in Earth, Wind & Fire, kept in touch, played live together on occasion and worked on some songs. But business concerns sidetracked any efforts to release other collaborations. “The thing was that

there was a difference between people who worked at record labels seeing revenues off of what we were doing and wanting us to do something and having something come naturally to us that we felt was something we wanted to do,” Thomas said. “This song happened while we were all in lockdown and we were all finding creative ways to be creative.” Like “Supernatural” before it, “Blessings and Miracles” has an eclectic array of talent contributing to the proceedings. This batch of 15 songs finds Chris Stapleton, Corey Glover, Steve Winwood and Kirk Hammett and the late Chick Corea contributing. The biggest difference was that COVID-19 circumstances demanded remote creativity, a factor that didn’t faze Santana at all. “The procedure for me is very simple—I close my eyes, hear [who I’m playing with] and [they’re]

right next to me,” Santana said. “That’s how I function. Where I am, being 74, my imagination is infinitely more intense, so I can just close my eyes and I’m right next to [whoever I’m recording with]. I know not to step on their voice, honor their space and know when to come in. How much passion, emotion and energy to put in there to make it real. It’s such a phenomenon to work with artists and we have yet to shake hands or be in the same room, but that didn’t stop us.” If You Go Carlo Santana / Earth Wind & Fire August 14,2022 PNC Bank Arts Center 116 Garden State Arts Center HolmdelNJ 732-203-2500 www.pncartcenter.org https://www.ticketsqueeze. com/tickets/4413245/santana-and-earth-wind-andfire-2022-08-14-19-00-00pnc-bank-arts-center

The Art House Gallery presents “Not the End of the World...Yet”

New work by Donna Kessinger Updated - New Venue & Reception Date In celebration of Jersey City PRIDE month and in partnership with Mana Contemporary and the Office of Cultural Affairs in Jersey City, the Art House Gallery is proud to present “Not The End of The World…Yet”, a solo exhibition of new work by Donna Kessinger from August 4 to August 28, 2022 at Mana Contemporary, 888 Newark Avenue, Studio 351, 3rd Floor. Reception to be held on Thursday, August 4th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Curated by Andrea McKenna, viewings will be by appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12pm to 5pm. Please only contact Andrea McKenna at gallery@ arthouseproductions.org to set up an appointment. “My paintings are a part of letting the world pass through me and onto the canvas. The process changes slightly with new technologies but has stayed the same for nearly 30 years, involving layering of unfocused abstract imagery, textures or following the light in my studio, removal, sealing it with wax or in recent work leaving the images exposed. During 2021, I had the luxury of time to spend on the new series of mid-sized works deeply layered with water based oils, traditional oils, wax mediums,

house paint, and spray paint. The paintings are on linen along with 3 additional grid based painted series on smaller canvases. They say everything and nothing at all,” says artist, Donna Kessinger. “Donna’s work embodies a timeless serenity that will capture your attention from a distance. Almost posing as futuristic landscapes, the work seems familiar yet not recognizable as traditional. It will pull you in and allow your senses to create a new reality,” says Gallery Director, Andrea McKenna. The Art House Gallery shows are always free and open to the public. Private viewings will be by appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12pm to 5pm. Please only contact Andrea McKenna at gallery@ arthouseproductions.org to secure a time to view the work. The show will also be available online in August at arthouseproductions.org. For online art sales, Art House offers free delivery to any address in Jersey City and Hoboken. Donna Rae Kessinger, a working Artist and Curator based in the New York Metro Area, encourages
