HITCHCOCK IN HOBOKEN

The 39 Steps Heaps On The Laughs At Mile Square Theatre “A Thriller Wrapped in a Comedy”, Runs thru Dec. 23

By Sally Deering Comedy gems are as precious as sparkling gems and if you’d like to watch a comedy gem glow in the dark then head over to Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken where THE 39 STEPS by Patrick Barlow, a theatrical interpretation of the Hitchcock film, is taking audiences on a wild ride of laughs, night after night. THE 39 STEPS puts its actors through their paces in this “comedy wrapped in a thriller” that tells the story of a desperate man on the run. Four actors – three men and a woman – play more than 150 characters including spies, cops, a fugitive and a blonde femme fatale. The comedy features all the scenes from Hitchcock’s movie thriller only performed live on MST’s intimate stage. The show runs through Sat, Dec. 23rd and features Joe Delafield, Zachary Fine, Evan Zes and Alycia Kunkle On Broadway, THE 39 STEPS ran from 2008-2010 and director Mark Shanahan understudied and played the lead. After being with the show for several years, Shanahan knows every nook and cranny of this comedic delight and enjoys working the show. “It’s a comedy based on the 1935 Hitchcock

there will be a new story, a new performance here at JCTC-KIDS,” Shoevaert says. “We want to get the Board of Ed on board with us.” Shoevaert wants to invite local artists to collaborate, too. “We will use live music and artists, designers, painters, actors, singers, and dancers from the neighborhood – to give them work,” Shoevaert says.” It’s important to nurture artists in the area.” After each MISHKA performance, Shoevaert will host a Q&A with audience members young & old. More importantly, she wants kids in the audience to go backstage and see how shadow puppetry is done. “It’s mesmerizing,” Shoevaert says, “that’s the best way to describe it. Children are used to fast-paced images. This is slower. You can really concentrate on the one action. It’s the same as reading a book. We are doing storytelling with music. The children have to imagine what’s there and not there. It makes their imagination work.”
