Jersey City’s First City Hall Park to Further Expand Open Public Space Outdoors & Foster Community
New Perimeter Park to Transform 1 acre of Concrete to Greenery Promoting Public Use, Coupled with Interior Preservation & Upgrades to 126-YearOld City Hall Building Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Department of Infrastructure announced today the creation of a one-acre perimeter park surrounding all four sides of City Hall to encourage more special events and public use of the outdoor space in one of New Jersey’s most densely populated areas. Additionally, inside City Hall, the design process is moving forward to build out the unoccupied fourth-floor space to add employee
offices and conference rooms occupied by the newly created Department of Infrastructure.
A Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire a consultant for the design and construction of Jersey City’s first-ever City Hall Park went before the Municipal Council at this week’s scheduled meeting on December 14, 2022.
“Any time of day, you will find people walking their dogs or socializing in front of City Hall, and this will be the latest addition to the dozens of new parks we’ve built and park improvements completed in recent years as part of our efforts to expand critical community amenities and further invest in residents’
health and wellness,” said Mayor Fulop. “At the same time, we are taking proactive steps to restore the inside of the 126-yearold building to increase efficiency for resident services and ensure City Hall can continue serving as a contributing asset for the City of Jersey City.”
The exterior transformation includes significant improvements to the plaza in front of City Hall along
Grove Street, including greening the concrete hardscape in both the front and back of the building and replacing the concrete with tree plantings, flower gardens, and other landscaping for beautification and stormwater absorption. Benches, picnic tables, and lighting will also be added throughout the grounds.
To increase the amount of open space created, the employee parking lot behind City Hall will be removed and converted into park space to nearly double the size of the new green space for the public to enjoy. The City Hall Park design will utilize recommendations from the recently completed Open Space Master Plan and the soon-to-be-completed Year of Open Space, both of which underwent robust outreach processes.
As a part of the Year of Open Space, we have
“been identifying innovative ways to create more parks and public spaces in our City. By replacing the concrete and asphalt around City Hall with a green park, we are advancing a more environmentally sustainable and equitable use of this public space for all to enjoy,” added Barkha Patel, Director of the Department of Infrastructure.
The exterior and interior City Hall improvements are part of the administration’s broader efforts to renovate and upgrade the 126-year-old historic building for an improved working environment and more efficient services for residents. Recent improvements include: Repointing work strategically improving the historic exterior walls of the building to mitigate damage from stormwater. This past December 12th, 2022 Frank Sinatra would of been 107 years old.
Athough Frank is gone his spirit remains alive and well in Hoboken. The recent 34th Hoboken House Tour kicked off with the unveiling of Hoboken Historical Museum’s bronze bust of Sinatra by master sculptor Chris Dahlberg.
The bust can be viewed until Friday, December 23 in the museums Upper Gallery where you can also view
large scale prints depicting various stages of the complex and fascinating production process. The bust was made possible by an anonymous gift from a Museum supporter, to whom they are extremely grate-ful. Holiday Gift Guide for Music Lovers
By Alan SculleryRecord labels have been busy this year digging through the vaults to assemble dozens of box sets and deluxe reissues. They make great Christmas gifts for family, friends – or yourself. Here are my top picks for 2022.
The Beatles: “Revolver” – This stellar 1966 album provided a bridge between the band’s earlier impeccably crafted, but more basic pop and the creative leap that was to come on 1967’s “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” This new six-disc set shows how songs like “Got To Get You Into My Life,” “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “Yellow Submarine” were built over multiple takes, revealing musical elements within these songs that were buried in the final
mixes. Along with the original album, this box has a mono version of “Revolver” and stereo mixes of a few songs.
the sessions. The alternate versions are often markedly – even radically – different and just as valid, as the album versions. The filler-free set also includes an informative radio show and full concert from St. Louis.
Blondie: “Against The Odds: 1974-1982” – This 128-song box includes all six albums from this vital original period of Blondie plus lots of alternate takes that offer interesting contrasts from the album versions.
for his work in the Clash. But this four-CD set demonstrates Strummer’s later stint fronting the Mescaleros produced some strong, thought-provoking and very diverse music, too. All three of Strummer’s albums with the Mescalaros are included, but the real find is the fourth disc of demos and unreleased outtakes.
Norah Jones
Wilco: “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” (Super-Deluxe Edition) – This superb eight-CD includes four discs – each essentially an alternate version of the album – that explore the many iterations the “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” songs went through during
Photo byJoanne Savio. Norah Jones: “Come Away With Me” 20th Anniversary Edition –Jones’ blockbuster debut album gets expanded in this three-CD set. Disc one is the original album, followed by a disc of demos and early takes and a third disc that is the first version of the album she recorded with producer Craig Street, but shelved. Many of the unreleased songs were easily good enough for release.
Blondie: “Against The Odds: 1974-1982” – This 128-song box includes all six albums from this vital original period of Blondie plus lots of alternate takes that offer interesting contrasts from the album versions.
Various Artists: “Pop Aid” – This three-CD, 63-song power pop set was released to raise funds for the Ukraine. Rockers by Deadlights, Arvidson & Butterflies, Thrift Store Halos and Lolas, along with Beatles-esque pop from Rogers & Butler, Richie Mayer and The Overtures, are among the many gems on “Pop Aid.”
“The
Years” –The late rocker will justifiably always be known
