Archdiocese of Newark to Open Second Mercy House Location in Jersey City
The Archdiocese of Newark’s Respect Life Office will open a second location of The Mercy House — its resource and referral center that pro vides a wide variety of assistance to all in need — at 20 Greenville Avenue in Jersey City on Monday, December 5, at 11 a.m. All are invited to the grand opening celebration, which will feature a tour of the facility and a bless ing from Auxiliary Bishop Gregory J. Studerus, who oversees Hudson County for the Archdiocese. Jersey City Councilwoman Denise Ridley will also visit. And Mercy House staff and volunteers will begin serving everyone who visits the site until it closes at 4 p.m.
“We’re excited about being in Jersey City, and everyone from the com munity has been very welcoming so far,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of the Respect Life Office and The Mercy House. “There’s a lot of need in the world today, so we’re looking forward to being there for the people who could use some help.”
Much like the original Newark Mercy House, the Jersey City location will provide nonperish able food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture, and help finding work and housing to all who request assistance. The resource and referral center will be open every Monday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
with special events like a Christmas toy giveaway expected throughout the year. Additionally, the Mercy House staff will continue operating the existing Class C boarding house upstairs, with pay ing tenants receiving three meals per day.
Jersey City’s Mercy House is the next step in the Archdiocese’s goal of opening a resource and referral center in each of the four coun ties it serves — Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union. It came about after Father
Joseph Furnaguera of St. Paul the Apostle Church offered the par ish-owned Greenville Avenue property to the Respect Life Office, which quickly converted several of the building’s first floor rooms into storage spaces for the essentials it distributes. Now that the center is finished, the new Mercy House will aim to bring Jesus’ teachings to life in Hudson County.
“The Mercy House embodies the Catholic Church’s mission —
we’re helping the poor and the vulnerable and the homeless,” Riley said. “Whether it’s providing them with a warm coat or supplying a package of diapers for their baby, we’re out in the trenches giving people what they need. At the same time, we’re bringing them to Christ and letting them know the Church is always there for them.”
To inquire about donating to or volun teering at The Mercy House in Jersey City, contact Cheryl A. Riley at cheryl.riley@rcan. org. For more infor mation on The Mercy House in general, visit www.rcan.org/ offices-and-ministries/ respect-life.

TWELVE ANGRY JURORS
Playing at the Bayonne High School, Alexander X. O’Connor Auditorium
TWELVE ANGRY JURORS adapted by Sherman L. Sergel and based on the Emmy awardwinning television movie by Reginald Rose is presented by TheBayonne High “A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Jurors at its core a deeply patriotic belief in the U.S. legal system. The story’s focal point, known only as Juror Eight, is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote. Eight sets his sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal biases. Rose deliberately and carefully peels away the layers of artifice from the men and allows a fuller picture of America, at its best and worst, to form.”
-Dramatic Publishing
With a few set backs in acquiring the rights to a fall production, the Bayonne High School Drama Society happily decided on “Twelve Angry Jurors”. The cast has overcome obstacles and delays with grace. I am proud and excited to share the work of these student actors in bringing this classic American play to life. With most of the audience on stage, this will be an intimate experience for both audience and cast.

Free Four-Hour Parking for NonCommercial Vehicles in Bayonne Parking Utility Lots, December 1 Through January 2
Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the Bayonne Parking Utility lots will offer free fourhour parking for noncommercial vehicles from Thursday, December 1, 2022, through Monday, January 2, 2023.
Regular parking charges in the lots will resume for non-commercial vehicles on Tuesday, January 3, 2022. Mayor Davis said, “The purpose of the fourhour free parking program in the lots is to encourage people to shop and dine in Bayonne during the holiday season.”
Mayor Davis thanked the Bayonne Parking Utility for supporting the fourhour free parking policy again this year. He said, “The Parking Utility deserves our gratitude for offering free four-hour parking to non-commercial
vehicles in the lots during the 2022 holiday season.”
The four-hour program does not apply to commercial vehicles or to on-street parking meters. All commercial and noncommercial drivers must continue feeding the meters on the streets. The paid permit program for commercial vehicles that park overnight in the lots will remain in effect.
On certain dates in the holiday season that will be announced, parking charges will not be enforced for the entire day. Otherwise, the free parking will be limited to four hours. In some previous years, there was free parking around the clock for a month. However, the program was abused by certain commuters who left their vehicles in free spaces all day, in order to avoid paying for spaces at Light Rail stations. That is why the holiday season parking program was modified to allow four hours of free parking at a time for a given non-commercial vehicle.

MAKING MUSIC
Trans-Siberian Orchestra Dec. 27, Prudential Center
By Alan SculleyLast year’s edition of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s annual holiday tour was an outing unlike any other for everyone involved in bringing the visually spectacular concerts to audiences across the United States.
On the one hand, coming off of 2020, a year in which the TSO Christmas tour could not happen because of the COVID pandemic, there was a special excitement and appreciation for being back performing the concerts.
“Missing 2020 certainly made us realize how fortunate we are to do what we do,” said
eastern U.S. touring unit.
But it was also the most challenging outing in TSO’s history, thanks to the lingering issues with COVID.
“It was riddled with anxiety, to say the least, because every morning you’d wake up and it’s like ‘OK, is somebody sick? Did somebody test positive? What are we going to do? Is the crew there? Are the folks in the audience OK?’,” said Al Pitrelli, who is musical director for the western U.S. unit of TSO. “So it was definitely the most stressful tour we’ve ever been on.”
This year’s show
Photo by Bob CareyChristmas Eve,” which is the 2001 concert DVD that combined the most popular songs from “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” and “The Christmas Attic.” With the DVD initially being aired on PBS stations, it has become one of TSO’s most popular releases.
“The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” will take up most of the first half of the show, followed by a second part that draws on selections
One thing Pitrelli and Plate couldn’t speak to is how this year’s visual effects and stage set will be bigger and different from last year.
This interview was conducted in October, a short time before Pitrelli and Plate joined the band for production rehearsals. It’s only then that they see the full stage production for the first time.
“You look up, and I always feel like a 15 year old walking into that arena for the first time,” Pitrelli said. “It really turns you back into a teen-ager. But this time I’m not getting
chased out by security or the police, so it’s lot more fun standing there looking up and going ‘This is awesome.’”

MARKET
It is a fact, the current real estate market is not as hot as it once was what with inflation and interest rates, resulting with potential homebuyers putting off their search for the American dream and leaving home sellers figuring out ways to make their home sell.
One of the most important things to do is find an excellent agent: Have they received a good customer rating?
Have they sold other homes in your area, Do they know your
area?
An experienced real estate licensed agent has comprehensive knowledge of the local market and will make the selling process as lucrative, painless and without last minute surprises, and if they do pop up,which they often do,the agent will have hands on experience to help you through the process.
Keep your home clean throughout the selling process. Don’t list and try and sell a messy home.
It will only result in short-term
incoveniences. Remember the first fourteen days is the most important time-frame for a listing. Take your time, don’t rush to put your home on the market if it isn’t ready.
Lastly, don’t overprice. Many homeowners hope to capture the attention of a single
buyer willing to pay an inflated listing price but they end up scaring away potential buyers. And if you do attract a buyer at the inflated price, you’ll limit your negotiating power because the buyer has no competition. A better strategy is to list your home at a price equal to
or slightly below market value; homeowners who do so often start a bidding war. The lesson: You may likely end up with a higher sales price if you begin with a lower list price,

Early detection of any cancer saves lives, but perhaps especially so with lung cancer. Adults aged 50 to 80 years who have smoked a pack a day for the last 20 years and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years should be screened for lung cancer with low-dose computed tomography (CT) every year. This is true even if you don’t have symptoms. One of our experienced lung nurse navigators will be with you and for you whatever the outcome.
