Fabric Artist & SVA Prof Amy Wilson to Discuss Art’s History Tues, Feb. 20: Artist Talk at Gallery 313, JC
By Sally Deering
E
very former Girl-and-Boy Scout can wax poetic about the beautifully embroidered badges and patches they earned building campfires and performing good deeds. Military personnel wear patches to show rank; and you can usually find a Grateful Dead patch on the nearest ‘Dead Head’s’ denim jacket. Patches can also be political. Like the patch artist Amy Wilson embroidered in December 2017 that featured a quote by U.S. Senator Bob Menendez after he was granted a mistrial in Newark for allegedly misappropriating campaign funds. At a press conference following the mistrial, Menendez sent a scathing message to his political foes: “To those who were digging my political grave so they could jump into my seat, I know who you are and I won’t forget you.” Inspired by the gutsiness and outrageousness of that newsbyte, Wilson sat down at her sewing machine and created the patch, gold letters on a red background. She posted it on her Twitter account, it went viral, and orders poured in. Local papers and TV news shows picked up the story and Wilson made the headlines.
Artist Amy Wilson
For those who would like to know more about Amy Wilson, she will be giving an artist talk at the new show, American Dark Age at Gallery 313 on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 pm. The talk runs till 8 pm, so don’t be late. “I’m going to talk about art from 1900 to the present,” Wilson says. “Everything from Communist propaganda art to activist art through the AIDS epidemic and beyond.” Wilson’s artist talk is part of the week-long art exhibition American Dark Age which opens Sat, Feb. 17, (opening reception 5-9:30 pm) and which calls attention to the economic and structural violence, government corruption, and civic disengagement America seems to be experiencing these days. Allison Remy Hall of Jersey City curates the exhibition. “Amy’s an active artist,” Allison Remy Hall says. “She has a lot of perspective on politics. More generally how art and politics intersect.
Curator Allison Remy Hall with Dominic Sansone’s work “Untitled”.
It’s one thing to have a political show, it’s really helpful to talk about artists making political work.” Born in NYC, Wilson, 44, says her family moved around a lot and shared time between Montclair and New York City Twenty years ago, she and her husband moved to the Lincoln Park section of Jersey City. “We love our neighborhood,” Wilson says. We were lucky to get in early and buy an apartment. We’re pretty happy here.” Wilson works fulltime as a professor in Visual and Critical Studies, teaching art history and studio art classes at School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts from SVA and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University in New Haven. She creates and exhibits her art work when she’s not in the classroom.
“At Certain Times You Could See The Edges of The Earth” lace art by Amy Wilson
“At this point, I’m doing mostly fibers,” Wilson says. “I do a lot of lace and embroidery, a combination of hand and machine. That’s my serious work. The Menendez patch was the silliest thing I did.” The art of sewing, embroidery, crochet and knitting seem to be archaic in this technological age, and yet Wilson says there’s been a new wave of interest in fabric art. “These are skills I teach at SVA and they’re very popular classes,” Wilson says. “To a certain extent, I feel its coming back. I was a painter for a while. Then I wanted to spin yarn. That got me into knitting and crochet and from that came this. I really want to get into bobbin lace. Its like tying knots, like macramé. Macramé is done with rope; chunky designs. Bobbin lace is done with thread and fine strings.” So, how did that
“The Room is Alive” made entirely with thread by Amy Wilson
Menendez patch come about? “I was volunteering on a campaign in Ward ‘D’ for City Councilman in Jersey City,” Wilson says. “I’m usually very interested in politics. It’s a hobby, but I was paying closer attention than usual and I was sort of riveted to the TV screen when it was announced it was a mistrial. When I heard Senator Menendez’s speech that he gave after, it was sort of shocking. It was one of those things that was sort of amazing, sort of awful, and sort of brilliant. I made a couple of patches on this embroidery machine. Gave a couple to my friends, and it just exploded online in the way that I never ever expected. It was like lightening striking. You had to run with it.” If you go Tues, Feb. 20, 7-8 pm Artist Talk with Amy Wilson AMERICAN DARK AGE Art Show 313 GALLERY, 313 Third St, JC. info@nosucharts.com

The gallery/art studio used to house a small gallery area and now that will be extended to create more exhibition space, twice the size of what it was previously. Sandiford has lots of ideas on how to utilize the studio & gallery space. First of all, she plans to do 4-6 shows a year and she plans to help artists with their careers.

Pullman and Sandiford have scheduled an artist talk for March 10 and there will also be a closing party the weekend before Easter Sunday. “I want to expand the gallery’s mission to be about developing emerging artists,” Sandiford says. “It’s not just about showing in the space.
