TRUTH IN ART
JCTC presents new TRUTH Show, Opens Feb. 2 Art Speaks Truth to Power
Gentrification Towers by Fermín Mendoza
By Sally Deering “Truth to Power” speaks for the millions of people struggling with the political turmoil that exists in today’s culture. In order to make sense of it all, many artists turn to their art to express their views, and work out their angst. On Fri, Feb. 2nd at 7 pm, Jersey City Theater Center’s art curator Lucy Rovetto presents a new exhibition at the 2nd floor gallery at Merseles Studios: TRUTH, spotlighting 15 local artists and their works that offer their perspectives on truth. The exhibition features paintings, photography and mixed-media, like Poramit Thantaplait’s installation The Sea that features sea creatures and reefs made with recycled plastic yogurt cups. The show runs through April 6. “What we like to do is choose a theme and then ask questions about it,” Rovetto says on a recent Saturday as artists drop by the gallery to deliver their artwork. “We’re not bringing answers we’re bring up a topic.”
TRUTH artists include Luis Alves, Jr., Frank Ippolito, Alex Katsenelinboigen, Zoe Sua Kay, Jackie Lima, Beatrice M. Mady, Fermín Mendoza, Stacey Fasel, Tyber Sky, Lentuk Murphy, Alex Pergament, Missy Robertson, Poramit Thantapalit, Beverly Tu, and Nicky Watts. Along with the gallery exhibit, TRUTH will feature interactive installations and performance art. There’s an opening night artist reception and a Talk-Back at 8:30 pm between the artists and audience. “To learn what everyone thinks about the subject of truth, that’s interesting,” Rovetto says. “What is fake? What is true? Can you know truth? Once you think you know truth is that the beginning of the truth? Is it black and white? Is it gray? We’re examining it through different forms of art.” Artist Beatrice M. Mady’s piece Big Buddha will be featured in the TRUTH exhibit. The piece, created with Illustrator, is a photograph Mady snapped

Let’s see how the visual and the performing arts talk about truth, and how dance interprets truth. It’s about people developing new ideas around a topic.” If you go Fri, Feb. 2 to Fri, Apr. 6. SHAKESPEARE RATTLES & ROLLS INTO JC
HAMLET BY BEDLAM at White Eagle Hall in JC, 3 Perfs Only! Concert Hall Transforms into Theatre of the Bard
White Eagle Hall on Newark Ave in Jersey City. The story of Hamlet is a tragedy about the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by visions of his dead father. Torment fuels Hamlet’s obsession to avenge his father’s death; and no good comes from any of it. “We all think we know Hamlet, but By Sally Deering watching Hamlet by “This above Bedlam you really feel you are watching all: to thine this classic for the first own self be time,” Olga Levina, true,” Polonius says JCTC’s artistic director says. “When I think of to his son, Laertes, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, professional theater in the 21st century, I think the tragedy about of Bedlam. Presenting the young Prince of Denmark haunted by the their Hamlet at White ghost of his dead father. Eagle Hall brings the Jersey City theater scene One of Shakespeare’s to a whole new level.” greatest plays, Hamlet Founded in 2012 by continues to ignite something in directors and theater troupes all over the world who want to try their hand at interpreting the Bard. Bedlam, the Manhattan-based theater company that deconstructs then reconstructs the classics is no exception. Guided by the vision of Artistic Director Eric Tucker, Bedlam’s Hamlet features four actors playing all the roles. The show runs three performances – Thurs, Feb. 8th through Sat, Feb. 10th at Jersey City Theater Center’s
Artistic Director Eric Tucker and Managing Director, Kimberly Pau Boston, Bedlam presents pared-down versions of classic plays, Tucker says. Bedlam’s productions have been noted in The New York Times critic Ben Brantley’s “Critics’ Picks,” and included on the paper’s “Top Ten Best Show List”. The company has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal and Time magazine. The Wall Street Journal named Tucker “Director of the Year” in 2014. “Most of the stuff we do is in Manhattan,” Tucker says as he gets ready for a rehearsal. “In the last three years, we sent our productions to Boston, DC, Houston. We have a show going back to DC in the spring
and of course, this tour of Hamlet and St. Joan. Those were our first two shows when we started five years ago.” Hamlet by Bedlam stars Aubie Merrylees, Aundria Brown, Kahlil Garcia, and Sam Massaro. The creative team includes John McDermott (Scenic Designer); Juliana Beecher (Production Manager); Caroline Englander (Stage Manager); and Trampas Thompson (Fight Director). Four people playing all the roles in Hamlet seems a little crazy and almost impossible; and yet, Tucker says, the talents of this small cast will give the audience an exciting theater experience. “With four people performing the roles,
you just hear it differently,” Tucker says. “You tend to listen more closely. You’re getting a clear telling of the story which is also exciting, the energy of four people to get it out there, in Jersey City, at this moment. It gives a new perspective to a play you’ve seen.”

ART IN THE DARK New Show at 313 Gallery in JC Addresses Current Political Climate
Artists Sam Pullin & Dominic Sansone—New Works for a Dark Age through Sat, Feb. 24. (Opening reception is Sat, Feb. 17, 5-9:30 pm.)
By Sally Deering
Political art seems
to be flourishing as President Trump’s administration takes measures to defund the National Endowment for the Arts, and pulls other political moves seemingly out to destroy the vibrant art scene in this country. To address these negative times, artists Sam Pullin of Jersey City and Dominic Sansone of Chicago present American Dark Age a week-long exhibition at 313 Gallery in Jersey City featuring paintings, sculpture and installations that address “the degradation of society and its institutions”.
Curator Allison Remy Hall and Dominic Sansone’s “Untitled”
Through art, American Dark Age calls attention to economic and structural violence, government corruption, and civic disengagement. Allison Remy Hall of Jersey City curates the exhibition which opens Sat, Feb. 17 and runs

something about violence and toxic masculinity. Then it branched out to violence and capitalism, and the inherent economic and social violence in the system. We live in a dark age as far as America goes.” Sam Pullin is a Jersey City-based multimedia artist. His work centers around concepts of urban life, social decay, and the position of human beings in the broader universe. Pullin has painted a number of murals in Jersey City and exhibited regularly in the tri-state area. He is currently part of the ESKFF Residency at Mana Contemporary. On Tues, Feb. 20,

from 7-8 pm, artist and educator Amy Wilson will add her voice to the conversation with a talk on art and politics at 313 Gallery. Wilson teaches at the School of Visual Arts in the Visual and Critical Studies program. “I’m going to be giving a talk about political art of the 20th and 21st centuries,” Wilson says. “It will be more like an historical talk, versions Cont’d on page 15

It’s one thing to have a political show, its really helpful to talk about artists making political work.” Wilson has exhibited nationally, and recently received critical acclaim for her New Jersey political fiber works. Wilson created a patch from the words U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) spoke to the press after his corruption case ended in a mistrial. “To those who were digging my political grave so they could jump into my seat, I know who you are and I won’t forget you.” Even though her patches were a
