Murphy Administration Awards

Bayonne $133,677 State Recycling Grant

The Murphy Administration is awarding nearly $16.2 million in grants to communities across the state to help them enhance waste reduction and recycling programs, the same amount as the previous year’s total, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette announced. The DEP is awarding Bayonne a recycling grant of $133,677, up from $115,257 in 2022. Mayor Jimmy Davis said, “I would like to thank the residents and businesses in Bayonne for taking part in our recycling programs. Their support for recycling helped generate this grant.” Mayor Davis continued, “I would also

like to thank Public Works Director Tom Cotter and Recycling Coordinator

Mike Tassone for providing successful leadership of our recycling programs. Their steady efforts have led to this 2023 state grant that will help maintain Bayonne’s recycling and waste collection efforts.”

The Bayonne Department of Public Works will use the state grant to support its waste management and recycling programs. The specific uses of the grant will be announced at a later date. The annual awards are based on 2020 recycling performance, the most recent year for which data is available. Municipalities must use their funds for various recycling

initiatives. These may include sponsoring household hazardous waste collection events, providing recycling receptacles in public places, or maintaining leaf composting operations.

Commissioner LaTourette said, “New Jersey has long set a national example for recycling, starting with being the first state to enact a recycling law in 1987.” He continued, “This annual grant program provides incentive for communities to strengthen their municipal recycling initiatives, encourage children and adults to keep our environment clean, and provide assistance in helping to reduce the local tax burden while also improving quality of life.” The grants are awarded through the state’s Recycling Enhancement Act and are funded through a

$3 per-ton surcharge on trash disposed statewide at solid waste facilities. As required under the Recycling Enhancement Act, the DEP returns 60% of that money to municipalities based on how much recycling each community reports accomplishing during the calendar year. The remaining funds are divided, with 30% going to counties, 5% to colleges and universities, and 5% for administrative costs.

According to the DEP, “For calendar year 2020, New Jersey generated 20,997,099 tons of solid waste, which represents disposal (9,474,871 tons) and recycling (11,522,228 tons) reported by municipalities and, in limited instances, counties.” The DEP continued, “The overall tonnage of materials reported as recycled and as disposed both decreased slightly in 2020 from 2019, leading to a slight decrease in the overall recycling rate, to 55% in 2020 from 56% in 2019. Solid waste includes municipal waste plus construction debris and other types of non-municipal waste.”

IT HAPPENED IN HUDSON COUNTY

Rarest of the rare automobilesA 1952 Thana, spotted in Bayonne...Have you seen this car?

Having it’s place in the oil industry it is only natural for unusual cars to show up in Bayonne. I saw one in the summer months of 1966 on Broadway, in the lot of a Mobil gas station, marked For Sale! A spanking modern looking two place roadster, I eventually found out it was a 1952 Thana, the name an acronym of the designer, and only 8 of them were made that year.

The car was black, had an oval grille, long, low cg and looked like a fifties custom job. Sporting an abundance of Chrome, a scoop

shield on the center of the hood, lake pipes, wheel pants on the rear wheels and a chrome luggage rack over the trunk. Chrome script on the hood indicated the name (Thana). They were supposedly made from mixed Ford and Chevy parts with only 8 of them produced in 1952.

Such a roadburner, dad thought it was a customized Cord at first sight. I have dug all over into car books and magazines, particularly historical in nature, and nothing has come up. Oh, and yes it had that other speedster field mark, White Wall tires!

A friend of the family who knew classic cars well, was familiar with the make, confirmed the 1952 date and said it was an experimental model. I have written pieces for Car Classics but have never seen any magazine articles on the Thana. That’s the story! If anyone has any info or backstory on this Black Beauty of Bayonne please contact ogpictureperfect@ gmail.com Might get Jay Leno or Chasing Classic Cars to town.

MAKING MUSIC

AIR SUPPLY AT ST.GEORGE THEATRE STATEN ISLAND, NY MARCH 10,2023

Early in their partnership inAir Supply, guitarist Graham Russell and singer Russell Hitchcock got a harsh lesson in how fleeting success can be in the world of music.

The two met in Sydney,Australia when they landed gigs in the chorus for a touring production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1975. They hit it off so famously that within days, they were working on songs Russell had been writing.

Their first year-plus was nothing short of magical.

While they toured in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Russell and Hitchcock

in 1976 released a single, “Love and Other Bruises,” which became a chart-topping hit in Australia. A self-titled debut album followed, and it topped the country’s album charts just as the duo finished their stint in the musical.

The duo then landed a tour with Rod Stewart that took Air Supply across Australia and on to America and Canada.

Then came the reality check.

“We toured with Rod and we thought we’d come back to a hero’s welcome, ticker tape and the whole thing,” Russell said in a midJanuary phone interview. “But they had forgotten about us.”

The pair couldn’t get gigs and before long they were basically dirt poor. But Russell and Hitchcock dug back in. Russell wrote a new batch of songs that included such familiar tunes as “All Out of Love,” “The Woman You Love” and “Lost In Love.”

The latter song was released as a single in Australia in 1979, and the magic returned. “It was a big hit again (in Australia),” Russell

said. “But we still didn’t make any money.”

But what the pair didn’t know was Clive Davis, the legendary record executive and then-president of Arista Records, had bought the rights to “Lost In Love” and the song was starting to climb the U.S. charts.

Eventually Russell reached out to Davis.

“He (Davis) said ‘OK, you’ve got to get back to Australia and make that album right away. ‘Lost In Love’ is going to be the biggest song of the year,’” Russell said. “I couldn’t really believe that, but he said it. He said ‘Get back there. Your career is about to take off.’”

And did it ever. The anthemic pop ballad sound of “Lost In Love” registered worldwide and Air Supply became one of the biggest acts of the ‘80s, spinning out singles like “All Out of Love,” “Every Woman in the World,” “The One

That You Love,” “Here I Am,” “Even the Nights Are Better, “Two Less Lonely People in the World” and “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.”

The hits dried up toward the end of the ‘80s, butAir Supply has remained a popular touring act, bringing out a live show that’s more robust and energetic than the studio versions of their songs might suggest.

“It’s a rock and roll band and it’s loud and powerful,” Russell said. “For the people that think it’s going to be Peter, Paul and Mary, they’re very much surprised.”
