Hudson County Community College and Rutgers University Partner to Address Food Insecurity and How ‘Food Fuels Minds’
“Food is something that helps us connect with each other. That’s the beauty of it,” reads a sign in the window of the Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Gabert Library.
HCCC students come from diverse backgrounds, but many share experiences reflecting national concerns of food insecurity on college campuses. While an estimated 40% of United States college students are food insecure, 57% of HCCC students report being food insecure. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that about one of every three college students may skip meals while they attend classes, hold down jobs and internships, take care of family members,
and maintain social and professional connections.
The “Food Fuels Minds” project is a collaboration of the HCCC “Hudson Helps Resource Center,” faculty and students from the College’s Art Department, and Rutgers University. The innovative project is focused on addressing food insecurity and stimulating interest in New Jersey’s Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). The project is funded by a grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and designed to engage the College community in sharing their food insecurity experiences.
In late April 2023, HCCC students anonymously shared their

personal narratives about food, hunger, family, struggle, support, and success. Forty HCCC art students interpreted these stories into paintings, illustrations, and typographic designs that were displayed in the College’s windows and galleries. The art students also produced an original print and digital magazine incorporating their artwork, the narratives, and practical information about how
to enroll for SNAP. The magazine is being circulated at College events, on both HCCC campuses, and within the community.
As part of the project, the research team from HCCC and Rutgers devised and offered a toolkit for other institutions to utilize in successfully combating food insecurity. The toolkit includes a film documenting the HCCC project.
HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber said that the College instituted the “Hudson Helps Resource Center” in Spring 2019 to address students’ basic needs beyond the classroom.
“Our ‘Hudson Helps’ program promotes student retention and success by removing impediments that prevent students from focusing on their studies,” he stated. “Hudson Helps” includes a Care Team that responds to students
in times of difficulty and crisis; food pantries at the Journal Square and North Hudson campuses that provide meals to students and staff, no questions asked; nutritional counseling and SNAP application support; a Career Clothing Closet that assists students with professional and personal attire; emergency financial assistance; “Single Stop” benefits screener; Chromebook loans; Social Services Support (case management and general assistance); and mental health services.
“We are very proud to partner with Rutgers University in addressing this issue of national importance. We look forward to assisting other colleges and universities in making significant differences in the lives of students and their families,” Dr. Reber said.

The concerts are scheduled for Wednesdays from July 12 through August 23, with August 30 as a rain date. “We are ready for a great summer. We have a great lineup of music, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying the summer nights,” stated Pete Amadeo, Supervisor of Recreation.
The following concerts have been scheduled:
Wednesday, July 19: Del Satins
The Del-Satins are an American vocal group, most active in the early 1960s, who recorded on their own, but are best remembered for their harmonies on hit records for Dion and others. They have been described as having “few peers as practitioners of harmony and Doo-Wop.” The group was formed in 1958 in Manhattan, New York, through a merger of two existing street corner groups, the Yorkville Melodies and the Jokers. The original members were teenagers. They chose the name Del-Satins as a tribute to The Dells and The Five Satins.
The public is invited to the courtyard of the Barrow Mansion and enjoy a free concert by some of JC’s finest, jazziest, sultriest, funkiest, rocking-est musicians around! We’re kicking off the season with Mary Aiken and the @brightsidetavern band. Bring your kids and a friend or two and enjoy some great music on the porch!

MAKING MUSIC
GARY PUCKETT AND THE UNION GAP COUNT BASIE CENTER RED BANK
By Dave Gil de RubioGary Puckett and the Union Gap may have enjoyed their heyday from 1967 to 1969, but it hasn’t kept these pop legends from continuing to tour and entertain their legion of fans.
Founded in 1967 by Puckett, the Union Gap enjoyed a string of five Top 10 hits for the next two years. Like other oldies acts, Puckett promises to keep the
nostalgia flame burning bright with the group’s shows.
“The people want to hear the music of their youth and the music that they expect from me. I play all the hits and we play a lot of the songs that were on the first three albums for the Union Gap,” he explained. “So it’s built around music that they may recognize, but not necessarily were
our hits—though I do all the hits—‘Woman, Woman,’ ‘Young Girl,’ ‘Lady Willpower,’ ‘Over You,’ ‘This Girl Is a Woman Now.’ But we also do some songs like The Bee Gees ‘To Love Somebody.’ Bob Dylan’s ‘Mighty Quinn,’ because it’s so much fun and I think it was on our second album. We do Petula Clark’s ‘Kiss Me Goodbye’—stuff like that, songs that everybody knows and loves.” Around the same time Puckett got a record deal, he came up with the idea of dressing himself and his band in Civil War-inspired outfits.
“I knew that it was a very competitive business. I knew that everybody wanted to be on that Top 40 and everybody wanted to get on the “Billboard” Hot 100
chart,” he recalled. “So I thought we might want to go for a visual image along with a record that we might be able to make. [The idea was that] maybe somebody would look at it, be curious and wonder what the record sounded like and that’s exactly what happened actually. I always thought the Civil War-era period of history for the U.S. was so interesting [and the uniforms] were spectacular to look at.”
The hits started coming, but Puckett and the Union Gap’s momentum was short circuited over creative differences with the band’s producer, Jerry Fuller. Puckett also pointed out that tastes and times were changing and his music didn’t fit the changing times.
“I made some poor
decisions at a very bad time when things were changing,” he said. “The ‘60s were becoming the ‘70s. People were changing their attitudes, their minds, their music, their drugs—they were just changing and moving on.”
