Hudson County Hosts Powerhouse Latina Music and Dance Acts in Concert Wednesday, July 18th at 7 pm. Tickets Available Now! Jersey City, NJ— Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and the Board of Chosen Freeholders are proud to announce an evening of dynamic live music headlined by two sizzling acts, to be presented Wednesday, July 18th from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Rotunda of the historic Brennan Court House (583 Newark Avenue, Jersey City). The evening will open with a performance by the Brazilian singer/ songwriter Monika Oliveira. Born in Belem do Para and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Oliveira has been performing in the New York area for more than twenty years. She combines her love
of Brazil’s musical heritage with a mastery of Jazz to create what critics describe as a “sultry variation on both … that is at once moving and rhythmic, pure and passionate.” Joined by the Brazilians Trio, she will take the stage at 7 pm. At 8 p.m., Flamenco Flavor will wow audience members with their fresh take on traditional Spanish rhythms with a fiery urban twist, presenting sensual Latin choreography danced brilliantly and paired with the ardent voice and soulful guitar play of David M. Castellano. “We are thrilled to open the Courthouse Rotunda arts venue
to new voices,” said County Executive DeGise. “Jazz, salsa, flamenco—are just part of the rich cultural palette right here in Hudson County and the metro area we hope to draw from as we produce more new live music for the community’s enjoyment.” Placed on the Register of Historic Places in 1970 and saved from demolition, the 108 year-old William J. Brennan Courthouse is just that—a working civil courthouse and seat of County Government during the day. But by night, its stunning fourstory marble rotunda has become home to a range of musical acts
and visual arts exhibits presented by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs that are promoted by “Visit Hudson,” the Office’s tourism development arm. This concert is the first of what is expected to become a new series entitled “Live At Brennan’s.” The series will kick off on a regular basis in September with the July 18th event acting as a preview of what is to come in the year ahead: exciting, live performance designed to showcase the rich professional music scene Hudson County is today very much a part of here in the New York/North Jersey metropolitan
area. Just last month the Brennan Court House Rotunda was the venue for performances that were part of the weeklong Riverview Jazz Festival. Doors for this event will open at 6:30. Tickets are $20. The price includes parking in the Courthouse lot and light refreshments between acts.

ART REVEALS
by Sally Deering
REVEALING: Group Show to Open at 313 Gallery, JC Paintings, Sculpture, Photography Explore Gender
313 Gallery on Third Street in Jersey City may be intimately small, but its next group show, Revealing, will feature ten artists addressing the bigger issues of gender. The show opens Tues, July 10, and runs through Sun, July 29. Maria Ross of Jersey City says she curated the exhibition to represent the “many genders” of our culture. “As curator, I morphed this exhibit a few times,” Ross says. “Initially I wanted to exhibit art about female empowerment and inspiration, but I thought, why limit it to a single gender? Today we recognize many genders. We are encouraged to view humanity and embrace all the natures of ourselves and others in a positive way.” Revealing will have photographs, drawings, sculpture, paintings, and dance. The show features dancers Leslie Ann Kilpatrick and Mitchell Murdock and artists Luke Ivy Price, Lisa FicarelliHalpern, Clarence Rich, Chunbum Park, Kristianne Molina, Jacqueline Hernandez, Trix Rosen, Irvin Rodriguez, Shilpa Shree Gowda and Sofia Zubi, a 2017 graduate of Pratt Institute in New York
My paintings are a timeline of my growth as a person.” Revealing will also feature the photographs of Trix Rosen of Jersey City. Rosen’s slideshow “Maitresse” was recently featured in the MOMA exhibit, CLUB 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village 1978-1983. Many of the photographs she took are of women posing boldly, sometimes defiantly for the camera. The pictures seem to reveal a femininity that’s strong and confident.
Sculpture by Jacqueline Hernandez Artist Sofia Zubi began expressing herself through art when she was a young girl. Originally from Southern California, Zubi was 13 when she and her family moved to Bahrain, an island outside Saudi Arabia. It was there, that she would often see women dressed in Burkas that covered their entire bodies except their gaze. “There was something about their black silhouettes and their eyes -- which were a story on their own,” Zubi says. “I started painting them, and when I was in colPhotograph by Trix Rosen lege, I did a series of of expressing ourselves “My photography is paintings about them.” Zubi says that being a any way we want,” Zubi inseparable from my female artist places her says. “My message isn’t life,” Rosen says. “I have always reflected in a unique and interest- only on gender. social change that swirls around me.” As curator, Ross sees the show as “a celebration of beauty in all its provocative senses.” “I want to encourage people to broaden their horizons, reflect on their values and what they consider beautiful,” Ross says. “In today’s world, where it seems that some minds are having narrower views about our differences, I hope this exhibit will serve to challenge, inspire, and expand how we see ourselves and others.”
