omen’s faces are a myriad of feelings and emotions artist Theda Sandiford conveys in the mixed media paintings on view in Fragmented Identity, her solo show at ‘A’ Condo on Washington Street in downtown Jersey City. The show opened Friday, June 8, and runs through July. Sandiford’s show features 13 mixed media pieces that represent the many masks she wears throughout the course of a day, she says, either in her Jersey City studio or at her desk at Island Records in Manhattan where she works as a publicist. “For me, the mask is who I need to be in the moment,” Sandiford says, as she gets ready to travel to Los Angeles for the record company. “I wear different ones for certain occasions and circumstances. Each of the masks are time frames of my life.” Sandiford’s mixed media piece Headache looks like a woman’s head exploding into tiny little bits & bobs, and its inspired by the headaches Sandiford experiences in real life, she says. It’s obstacles like headaches, and dyslexia that Sandiford has lived with, but keeps private and doesn’t let it get in the way of her work as an artist and publicist. “Headache is my visual representation of

Jersey Bike Program Launched in Bayonne
On Monday, June 11, the Jersey Bike program, a bike sharing service, was launched in front of City Hall in Bayonne. Mayor Davis, City Council Members, and other City officials joined representatives of P3 Global Management, the operator of the bike program, for the launch. Jersey Bike will enable bicyclists to pick up and drop off bikes in several different towns and cities across New Jersey. It represents an expansion of Hudson Bike Share, which was already operating in Bayonne, Hoboken, Guttenberg, North Bergen, Weehawken, and West New York. The Jersey Bike program will connect Bayonne to other cities. Jersey Bike has a single membership for the entire state, enabling members to use the system in any participating community. By the end of the year, Jersey Bike will have approximately 900 bikes in Hudson County. To read the full story visit www.verviewobserver.net

udson Shakespeare Company invites audiences to local parks, this summer, to see their productions of The Tempest and All’s Well That Ends Well. This year, the troupe celebrates its 27th season presenting Shakespeare’s repertoire at outdoor venues in the tri-state area. On Thurs, June 21 at 7 pm, the players will stage The Tempest in Jersey City’s Hamilton Park, on the corner of 8th St & Jersey Ave with Jon Ciccarelli directing. In July, the troupe performs Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well, a comedy of “wits, manipulation, clowns and kings” also directed by Ciccarelli. In the upcoming performance of The Tempest on June 21, audiences familiar with The Bard will see a different perspective – some leading roles have been flipped from male to female, including the leading character Prospero who HSC changed to Prospera. “As a company, we’ve produced The Tempest, twice, both with powerhouse actors as Prospero,” Ciccarelli says. “We were thinking what different spin could we do with a new production and we

A PLAY A MINUTE
30 Playwrights Tell One Minute Tales Mile Square Theater to Host 8th Annual Play Fest
By Sally Deering A minute doesn’t seem like a lot of time for a playwright to make a point, but that’s exactly what’s in store at the New Jersey One-Minute Play Festival (1MPF) hosted by Mile Square Theater in Hoboken. On Sat, June 30 and Sun, July 1st, 30 playwrights’ one-minute plays will be presented by a troupe of professional actors and directors. The 60-second plays will explore current topics, ideas, and trends affecting New Jersey residents. The marathon evening of one-minute plays will have three performances: Sat, June 30 at 8 pm, Sun, July 1, at 3 pm and 7 pm. The plays were curated by Producing
Artistic Director of 1MPF Dominic D’Andrea along with Caitlin Wees. The 1MPF theater project’s mission is to engage the community in a public discourse, get them thinking and discussing the issues that are affecting their community. There are 1MPFs in 20 states, so far, and this marks the 3rd year the IMPF will be hosted by Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken. In fact, Mile Square Theatre’s Artistic Director Chris O’Connor has a play in this year’s festival. “It’s exciting,” O’Connor says. “We hosted the New Jersey One-Minute Play Festival last year, and it was a great success. It was
thrilling to have so many New Jersey theatre artists in our theatre, creating such thought-provoking material.” Along with O’Connor, playwrights featured in the festival are Brad Baron, Della Brown, Marian Calabro, Alexander Doyle, Mike Duffy, Laura Ekstrand, Lisa Huberman, Steven Haworth, Chisa Hutchinson, Stephen Hiltner, Margo Hammond, Angela Kariotis, Michele Aldin Kushner, Ari Laura Kreith, Mayumi Lane, Lyn Marie Macy, TS Murphy, Lisa Mary MacNair, Erin Mallon, Benjamin Marshall, Barry M. Schwartz, David Lee White, Stanley Werse, Amy Witting, Karin Diann Williams, & Brendon Votipka. Community engagement is at the heart of the One Minute Play Festival. In these stressful times, Community engagement is at the heart of the One Minute Play Festival. In these stressful times, topical theater like the 1MPF is important to our culture because it offers clarity and hope “as the bigger and more important questions are addressed on the national stage.” D’Andrea says: “All of this is reflected in the work. These artists are grappling with some necessary bigger-picture ideas.”
Several directors are also part of the festival: Andrew Binger, Meredith Burns, Jillian Carucci, Jessica Fitcher, Steve Gaissert, John P. Keller, Chris Kuiken, & Enormovs Muñoz – all theater professionals working in the arts. “We are proud to host the 1MPF again this year,” O’Connor says, “and to open our doors to the New Jersey theatre community.” If you go Sat, June 30 at 8 pm, Sun, July 1 at 3 pm & 7 pm The 8th Annual New Jersey One-Minute Play Festival Mile Square Theatre 1400 Clinton St, HOB Tix: $20/www.milesquaretheatre.org www.oneminute playfestival.com
