2018 Sinatra Idol Contest, June 14 14 Crooners Compete for Title at Sinatra Park, Hoboken
By Sally Deering For those of you who know Frank Sinatra Drive as the long and winding road on Hoboken’s waterfront, well, kids, its time you knew some Hoboken history. Let’s just say Ol’ Blue Eyes grew up in Hoboken back when almost every corner had a gin joint and if you could carry a tune, some music-lover on a barstool bought you a drink. Those were the days when Hoboken native son Frankie Sinatra walked the Mile Square City dreaming of someday making it big. And make it he did! Superstar, legend, and boy, what a voice. It’s been said that back in the 1990s, while Sinatra was in Manhattan, he
Contestant Frank Gamrus, Madison, Indiana

would tell the limo driver to take him to Hoboken where his black limo could be seen cruising up and down the old neighborhoods. If you want to see just how much impact Sinatra has had on fans of his music, then you might want to head over to Frank Sinatra Park on Thursday, June 14, at 6:30 pm for the Sinatra Idol contest where 14
Contestant Stanley Volk, London, England
contestants from as far as London, and Mexico will hit the stage and channel the swinging vocal style of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they compete for prizes and bragging rights to the title, Sinatra Idol. Sinatra Idol hosts are Gary Simpson and Geri Fallo, the director of Hoboken’s Cultural Affairs department who will introduce the

contestants. Judges are Bob Foster, director of the Hoboken Historical Museum; Dave Post, bandleader for the Swingadelic Big Band; Jack Silbert, music writer and editor (The New York Times, New Jersey Monthly, Weird NJ); Joyce Flinn, owner of Elysian Cafe & Schnackenberg’s Luncheonette in Hoboken; and Jay
Lustig, founder/editor NJARTS.net. Jerry Pearce, the 2017 Sinatra Idol winner will perform. Sponsored by Hoboken’s Cultural Affairs office, Sinatra Idol will require contestants to sing a Sinatra tune, and although the contestants don’t have to sound like Sinatra, they must convey Sinatra’s swingin’, finger-snapping cool. A garment industry retiree, Stanley Volk will be visiting Hoboken for the first time for the Sinatra Idol contest. Hailing from London, England, Volk used to sing in Barber Shop Quartets. He has competed on TVs The X Factor and made it to the third round several times. He’s been a huge fan of Sinatra’s ever since the 60s, he says. “Though I grew up with the pop scene, The Beatles, etc., I never really took to that sort of music,” Volk says from London. “Modern Jazz was my thing, particularly Big Bands. We had a lot in London at that time. I saw Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sara
Vaughan, Buddy Rich, et. al. at the Ronny Scott club where it all happened.” For Sinatra Idol, Volk plans to sing a Sinatra tune from the 1958 album “Only the Lonely” although his favorite Sinatra tune is Angel Eyes, he says. “There is so much feeling and emotion in his interpretation of that song,” Volk says. Sinatra Idol contestant James Beckham of Elizabeth also grew up listening to Big Band music and got turned on to Sinatra when he won a contest in college with Sinatra’s rendition of the Cole Porter classic and Sinatra signature song, I’ve Got You Under My Skin.

By Sally Deering A life in art, that’s exactly what William La Rosa set out to do in his 30-year tenure as Director of the Hudson County Office of Cultural Affairs. Before retiring in September 2017, La Rosa facilitated programs that helped local visual and performing artists. He founded the Local Arts Program (LAP) grants that, over the years, provided thousands of dollars to local artists and arts organizations. omen jazz musicians like guitarist Leni Stern will be highlights of the week-long 6th Annual Riverview Jazz Festival which starts Friday, June 1, with a huge bash at Owen Grundy Pier right outside the Exchange Place PATH Station in downtown Jersey City. Fri, June 1, kicks off a week of world-class jazz performed by world-class musicians, many who live in and around Jersey City. On the festival’s Opening Night, live jazz will steam up the Owen Grundy Pier while food trucks line the streets outside the Exchange Place PATH Station. Fun activities for kids are planned, along with a record riot, interactive art, and many local vendors selling refreshments. Festival-goers can expect more than 40 events during the Riverview Jazz Festival with a June 9th closing night of live music and food vendors at the River View-Fisk Park in The Heights section of Jersey City. Music booker for Fox & Crow restaurant & bar Margo Parks booked the acts for the Riverview Jazz Fest, too. Musician Bryan Beninghove, who plays with several bands in

Beninghove’s been doing it since the festival began 6 years ago. “I’ve been here since the very beginning,” Beninghove says. “This year we have 40-42 events at a lot of different venues. Ten years earlier, we never would have gotten off the ground. There have always been a lot of musicians here, but there haven’t always been the venues. I think there’s more venues now, more of a willingness to engage residents in the area. With all the development, there’s a lot more sponsorship money floating around. Which makes a huge difference.” Highlights for the Opening Night of Riverview Jazz Festival at Owen Grundy Pier feature performances by the Riverview Jazz Brass led by Andrae Murchison, ZT Amplifiers Artist

We’re taking over Owen Grundy Pier,” Beninghove says. “I have a brass band, a busker’s section, a guitar showcase, three amazing jazz guitarists, and a Mambo band. It’s going to be a blast.” Throughout the Festival, restaurants and bars will be hosting live jazz. Places like Fox & Crow, GPs Restaurant, FM, Brightside Tavern, Madame Claude Bis, Harborside, The Archer, and Moore’s Lounge aka Bill & Ruth’s on Monticello Ave. One highlight on Thursday June 7 is when Leni Stern and Lezlie Harrison perform in Women in Jazz at The Rotunda in the Brennan Courthouse on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. “We’re bringing music back to the Rotunda,” Beninghove says. “Lezlie Harrison and Leni Stern are two

WOMEN IN JAZZ AT BRENNAN COURT HOUSE The William J Brennan Courthouse, 583 Newark Avenue Jersey City, will feature a Women in Jazz special event presented by the Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise and the Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/ Tourism Development in conjunction with the Riverview Jazz Festival. The Courthouse Rotunda is a truly stunning and unique venue to enjoy a night of jazz on Thursday June 7th beginning at 7PM. Guitarist and singer Leni Stern will bring her eclectic jazz and world style to the Rotunda. Named as one of Guitar Player’s 50 most sensational female guitarists of all time, Leni will perform with her
NYC based trio featuring Mamadou Ba and Alioune Faye. She will take the stage at 8PM. Vocalist Lezlie Harrison, a mainstay of the NY jazz scene and DJ for the premier jazz radio station WBGO, will begin the show at 7PM. Lezlie’s bold yet subtle vocals give any song she performs a singular sound that is all her own. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and saved from destruction by concerned citizens, the William J. Brennan Courthouse housed the county courts and offices until 1966, when it was abandoned and left to crumble. After a complete restoration the building was reopened in 1985 and now houses
