The Play’s the Thing at STAGEfest 2013, the Loew’s Jersey Theatre’s First Play Festival By Sally Deering
n her prime, she was a real looker. Decked out in red velvet and adorned in crystal and gold, the Loew’s Jersey Theatre was a glamorous show palace when it opened in 1929. Today, the Loew’s is a New Jersey Registered Historic Site owned by Jersey City and after many years of restoration by the volunteer group Friends of the Loew’s, the movie palace has ‘come back to life’. Like an aging Ziegfeld showgirl with gorgeous gams. the Loew’s is a grandly vintage venue for film festivals, film retrospectives – even weddings – and for the first time this month, the Loew’s will host its first every performing arts festival, STAGEfest 2013. Starting Friday, March 22 and running through Sunday, March 24, STAGEfest 2013 raises the
curtain on a weekend of theatrical, dance and musical performances highlighting Hudson’s arts and artists. The festival will feature three days of shows by local playwrights, musicians, dancers and solo-artists who will perform their works not just on the theater’s main stage, but also in its lobbies, salons, promenades and hallways. The weekend event also features a costume exhibit by Leading Lady Costumes and refreshments by local vendors in the Grand Lobby Café. “This marks the return to live theatre – in addition to classic film and concerts,” says Colin Egan, Executive Director of Loew’s Jersey Theatre. con’t pg. 2
on the cover . “We always said we wanted theatre to be part of the Loew’s, but with all the work of renovating it and running the other shows here, we kept putting it off. So STAGEfest is the first of an annual (and maybe more frequent) theatre festival the Loew’s will host.”
THE PRODUCERS Coordinating the event with Egan and the Friends of the Loew’s volunteers are Christine Goodman, Founder of Art House Productions in Jersey City, and David Zimmerman, Executive Director of the DeBaun Center for Performing Arts at Steven’s Institute of Technology in Hoboken. Play Festival. “We were looking for variety as well as artistic integrity, something that had quality to it and something that was going to work well in the spaces at the Loew’s,” Zimmerman says. “Some shows are operating in multiple spaces. Some are performing on the main stage, some in the lobby and in spaces upstairs. This has never been done at the Loew’s. Audience members can go from one show to the next to the next to the next.” For STAGEfest 2013, Zimmerman, Goodman and the rest of the STAGEfest 2013 committee chose 18 acts: eight plays, four musicals, three dance acts and three singer-soloists. “Because we are so close to New York, we forget there are a lot of artists
here,” Zimmerman says. “They’re telling a local story and it’s important for our artists to have a local venue to do that. It’s great for the Loew’s to have live theater. Hopefully this is the start of more things to come.” Audience members will get a big bang for their buck with ticket prices only $10 and $15, Zimmerman says. (Those ticket prices are for online purchases; tickets bought at the door are $5 extra.) Theater-goers can also buy a 3-day pass for $25; $30 at the door. “That’s cheap,” Zimmerman says. “You can see five different shows on Sunday for 10 bucks. How amazing is that? It’s ‘public-transportational’ and we have discount parking around the back.” con’t pg. 3

con’t from pg. 2 THE STORYTELLERS Many local playwrights are being featured in STAGEfest 2013 including Summer Dawn Hortillosa of Jersey City who wrote, directs and stars in “Before, After and Always,” a comedy that explores three stages of a relationship. The two-character play also stars Sergio Caetano, 22, a resident of Lake Hiawatha and student at Montclair University. Hortillosa, 22, was the winner of the 2007 New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival, Governor’s Award for her first play, “The Not-So-Lovely Tale of Strawberry Fructose” about the daughter of two candy makers who is cursed with an allergy to sweets. “Before, After and Always” will be performed in the Loew’s ‘Upstairs Left Lobby’ and its performance schedule is Saturday at 3 pm and 7:45 pm; and Sunday at 2:45 pm. “I’m really excited,” Hortillosa says. “This will be my first time performing and presenting at the Loew’s. Theater is my real passion and this is what I’m meant to do and what my talents are best for. There’s nothing like seeing your words come to life on stage.” A former member of the musical theater workshop at the BMI in New York City, under the direction of Maury Yestin, Annie Kessler of Jersey City co-wrote the music and lyrics with Libby Saines to the musical “Woman with Pocketbook” with music by Tony Award nominee Jeff Blumenkrantz (“Urban Cowboy”). “Woman with Pocketbook”
The Lobby of Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City is a musicalcomedy about a woman who goes to heaven but refuses to relinquish her purse. The half-hour musical has played St. Louis, Dallas and Los Angeles, and this production – the East Coast premiere – is produced by Christine Goodman of Art House Productions and directed by Art House Production’s Artistic Director Jack Halpin. It features a cast of 15 (mostly) local residents including Norrice Raymaker, Judith Moss, Brad Brenner and Roland Ramos. Thrilled to have her musical performed at the Loew’s, Kessler remembers the movie palace before its renovation and seeing the theater ‘come back to life’ is like a dream come true, she says. “I love the Loew’s,” Kessler says. “I think STAGEfest is a great idea and there’s a lot of great stuff being done.” Audience members can see “Woman with Pocketbook” on Saturday at 1:45 pm and 6:30 pm; and Sunday at 5:45 pm in the Loew’s ‘Upper Balcony’.

The Fringe showcases experimental,
emerging, and classical performing arts. I was convinced then, as I am now, that something like this can work in Hudson County. Retired Wrestler Tony Santana of Jersey City Takes Life One Day at a Time By Sally Deering He was known as “Dr. Santana” because he always wore white when he entered the ring. Long retired from wrestling, Tony Santana still dresses in his signature ‘whites’ when he’s out and about in his Jersey City neighborhood. Born in Puerto Rico, Santana came to Jersey City when he was 13 and went to work at the Eisen Bros. button company in Manhattan’s garment district. (Being tall and burly, Santana passed for 18 to get the job.) He worked there 30 years, starting first in delivery and moving his way up to manager. He work ed at Liz Claiborne in Jersey City
and owned his own button company at 111 First Street. After five years of being his own boss, Santana turned to bartending at Rolon’s Keyhole Bar on Bay Street, retiring in 2010. During that time, Santana raised 18 children. He also took an interest in wrestling. “A friend of mine told me he was going to fight in Hoboken and gave me a free ticket,” Santana says. “I saw his opponent hitting him and I tried to get to the ring but they wouldn’t let me near the ring because you have to be a wrestler. So I started wrestling. I trained at the Hoboken Ojola Wrestling Club on 3rd and Washington Streets.”

Tony Santana Santana wore white in the ring and his fans nicknamed him, “Dr. Santana.” He wrestled fighters who called themselves
“Scorpio” and “Dracula” and performed his signature move – the Double Nelson – on them. Santana’s most famous opponent was
Andres the Giant, who stood 6’8” and weighed over 350 pounds. “I only had one round with Andres the Giant,” Santana says. “He picked me up, threw me on the mat, the ref counted ‘one, two, three’ and I was out.” Santana’s last fight was in Hoboken in 1992. He was 45 and by that time, he was beginning to have a personal bout with the bottle. After surviving a stroke two years ago brought on by excessive drinking Santana swore off the stuff for good. He wants to enjoy retirement, he says, and the company of his 14 grandchildren. “I almost died because I had a drinking problem,” Santana says. “I promised my daughter I wasn’t going to drink any more. May 7th it will be two years.”

BROADWAY COUTURE Leading Lady Costumes Exhibits Gems from Broadway Classics at STAGEfest 2013 By Sally Deering While actors, singers, dancers, playwrights, directors and techies prepare for the Friends of Lowe’s first ever STAGEfest 2013 performing arts festival this weekend (Fri, Mar. 22-Sun, Mar 24) Jim Crochet, owner of Leading Lady Costumes ponders which costumes he’ll display during the festival. “Right now, it looks like we’re covering 13 different shows from 1965 up until the most recent Chicago tryout of
‘The Addams Family’,” Crochet says. “I’m doing ‘Titanic’ evening gowns, five costumes from the musical ‘SideShow’, and we’ll also be displaying Eliza Doolittle’s Ascot Gavotte dress from ‘My Fair Lady’.” STAGEfest 2013 festivalgoers will get to see how grand these costumes are and how beautifully they’re made, Crochet says. A costume designer as well as collector, Crochet rents out pieces of his collection to theaters, and to
photographers for photo shoots. His collection includes the costumes for “Les Miz”, original ‘Chorus Line’ costumes and opera costumes – even a few worn by Placido Domingo. His collection is eclectic and at times, surprising. “For years I had this frumpy looking late ‘30s- early ‘40s day dress in my stock and one day I was looking at the label,” Crochet says, “ and I saw it was an Angels and Berman label.

They’re beautiful costumes.” Ancestor costume from the Pre-Broadway Chicago production of “The Addams Family” designed by Julian Crouch. They were one of the top costume companies. It was an Angela Lansbury costume, her shopkeeper dress from the ‘We Need a Little Christmas’ number in ‘Mame.’ Moments like that completely excite me. It’s like winning the lottery.” Ancestor costumes from “The Addams Family” that were used in the Chicago production and then cut before the show moved to Broadway will also be on display. “All those period costumes were going to get trashed,”
Crochet also has costumes from the Broadway musical “The Secret Garden,” and the oldest piece he may be displaying is a Russian Imperial Court gown worn by silent film star Lillian Gish. “It’s a beautiful embroidered court gown with a five-foot train,” Crochet says. “The embroidery on it is unbelievable. SHAKESPEARE COMES TO MARIST HIGH SCHOOL To be or not to be? “Shakespeare is meant to be heard!” This was but one of the profound observations made by a cast member of the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey in a question and answer session, following a marvelous performance of Comedy of Errors. All of the students at Marist High School filled seats and bleachers in the gymnasium to “experience” Shakespeare live. This is the 8th year that Marist High School has offered this experience to its students. Past performances have included Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Romeo & Juliet and Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mr. Pratko, veteran English teacher at Marist High, School states, “Reading Shakespeare is something all schools require, but not many schools actually bring Shakespeare to life. We give our students the rare opportunity to experience Shakespeare as a living entity and not just as an academic requirement.” Freshman, Denesia Mitchell said, “I didn’t realize Shakespeare was so funny. I thought I wouldn’t understand what was going on but I loved every minute of the play” The Marist Community believes that Shakespeare continues to enrich our culture and his plays provides us with a unique opportunity to view the human condition. The Golden Grille in Downtown, Jersey City are made with fresh ingredients. Here’s a sampling of the dinner menu: Starters include Fried Calamari, Mussels in Wine Sauce,
Rock Shrimp, Chicken Croquettes and Codfish Croquettes. The croquettes were really tasty, especially the Codfish which were crunchy on the outside and moist on
the inside. They each came with spicy dipping sauces. ($4.95-$11.95) The Charcoal BBQ menu offers chicken dishes like Chicken BBQ, Chicken Francese and Chicken Parmiagiana; Beef dishes including Skirt Steak, Filet Mignon, Porterhouse and Rib-eye; Pork dishes like Grilled Pork Chops and Rack of Pork Ribs; and Seafood entrees including Grilled Calamari, Snapper, Salmon, and Shrimp. The Pork Ribs and the Chicken BBQ were a tasty experience – the meat and chicken were moist and juicy and the charcoal BBQ added that smoky flavor. There’s also a Combo dish with Chicken, Pork Ribs and Beef Ribs which is hearty enough for two to share. ($7.95-$23.95) The pasta menu includes Linguine with Clam Sauce; Seafood Scampi with Shrimp, Clams, and Scallops; Stuffed Flounder; and Shrimp Parmigiana. The Marinara sauce served with some of the pasta dishes was a step above with an aromatic flavor that was almost hypnotic – definitely give it a try during your visit. ($18.95-$19.95) There are salads and sandwiches, sides and desserts including a Passion fruit Mousse that is so divine you will want seconds. Cont’d on page 17

Susan Evans Grove: Make and Model: Views of Cars, Homes, & the American Dream -Now– June 16, 2013 Pro Arts Jersey City announces Make and Model: Views of Cars, Homes, & the American Dream by Susan Evans Grove, which will be on view at Windows On Columbus, located at Columbus Drive between Washington and Greene Streets, and at the Lobby on Greene St, located at 135 Greene Street off Columbus Drive in Jersey City. Susan Evans Grove graduated from the School of Visual Arts in NYC with a BFA in Photography, where she received the F2 Award. Other honors include: Photographer’s Forum “Best of Photography Annual”, an international exhibit of women photographers in New York and Tokyo, panel member for “Scandal” at Four Walls in Brooklyn, and the Juror’s Award from the New Jersey Photography Forum Annual Juried Exhibit. Her work has been seen on the cover of Playbill, in numerous newspapers, and in serveral books on Barbie
Grove’s photographs are in the permanent collection of the Jersey City Museum, Provident Bank, Capital One, and in several private collections. Make and Model brings together work from two different series that both examine different elements of material possessions and perceived status in American culture. “Suburban Sprawl” documents the spread of oversized housing that occupies former farmland. The digitally manipulated palette calls to mind the environmental strain that the developments put on the landscape and the compositions evoke as sense of isolation. “Used Cars” are images recorded on the surface of automobiles to call to mind the perception of status of cars in American culture. The exhibit is free and open to the public 24/7, March 9 – June 16, 2013. Reception: Wednesday, May 1st, 5-7pm. The exhibition is curated by Kerry Kolenut.
