ersey City’s culture scene just got some competition. It seems Bayonne, its Hudson sister to the south has been going through a renaissance of sorts. Art galleries, theater companies and now a new performing arts pavilion are giving the city a cultural facelift.

KOOKY ELVES MAKE MAGICAL SHOES FOR A HAPPILY EVER AFTER Hudson Theater Ensemble presents “THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER” Songs, Laughs, and Positive Messages By Sally Deering

Once upon a time in

Hoboken a little theater company decided to put on plays for adults and kids, and now, celebrating its 14th season, Hudson Theatre Ensemble presents the newest musical in its “Silly on Sixth” children’s series, THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER. The show, adapted from the old fairy tale, is by Karen Boettcher-Tate and takes a comedic twist on a shoemaker and his wife who have a very demanding landlady. When their luck seems to run out, a complete stranger invites three kooky elves into their lives who start making magical shoes that save the poor shoemaker and his wife from eviction and the unemployment line. “It is all so much fun and so exciting,” Director of Development Florence

Pape says. She also plays two roles in the show, Sneerella Twerm and Mrs. Snootbottom. “The underlying theme is the value of hard work and kindness,” Pape says. Sharing the stage with Pape are popular local actors Richard Dwyer, Wendy Weber Eaton, Nannette Matos, Deborah Michels, Leah Sayad, and David Silberger. The production is directed by Howard Richman, who plays the town mayor and designed the lighting. This is Richman’s sixth show

Richard Dwyer and Deborah Michels rehearse their roles as elves in THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER

with Hudson Theatre Ensemble. He played the title role in RUMPLESTILSKIN, then directed AESOP’S FABLES, and performed in JACK AND THE BEANSTALK and THE UGLY DUCKLING. “We try to pick shows that are entertaining and have positive messages,” Richman says. “The Elves and the Shoemaker is basically about good people doing good things for other

people and getting rewarded for their goodness.” THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER is underwritten by several Hoboken sponsors: Drs. Brescia, Migliaccio, Chinn, Moon, Picard, Lowe, & Tully, Obstetrics & Gynecology; and the Hudson Psychiatric Associates. Since it began, Hudson Theatre Ensemble has earned several awards from the New Jersey Association

Florence Pape as Sneerella, Deborah Matos as Matilda, and Dave Silberger as the Shoemaker in Hudson Theatre Ensemble’s THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER

of Community Theaters (NJACT). In 2006, it won the Perry Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play for its production of SCAPINO; in 2008, it was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor for its production of THE FOREIGNER, and in 2014, nominated again for Outstanding Lead Actor, this time in AS BEES IN HONEY DROWN.

BAYONNE, THE NEW BOHO?

Bayonne’s Culture Scene Takes Off Art, Theater and New Outdoor Stage on the Rise

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis

Cont’d from Cover “(The pavilion) is posed to be a great draw for Bayonne, and something that can be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike,” a statement from the office of Bayonne Mayor James M. Davis states. “We are excited by the way things are progressing. A final signoff is set the beginning of next week, and we will know a lot more in the way of timelines, start dates, and an event schedule within the next couple of weeks.” LAWN CHAIRS & MOZART Bayonne’s new performing arts pavilion will be approximately 30,000 square feet and hold up to 5,000 people, says project manager Robert Donnel of Donnel Benjamin Productions, a subsidiary of Medical Tourism TV, LLC, and former owner of the Meadowlands Convention Center in Secaucus. It will be set on a concrete foundation and feature a membrane that goes over giant arches, Donnel says. Much like the PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, folks will be able to bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch the

shows, and located a block from the waterfront, the location offers magnificent views of the Manhattan Skyline. Designed to be a temporary site for about three years, Donnel says, if successful, it may become a permanent structure. Like Kevin Costner building a baseball field to attract ball players in the film FIELD OF DREAMS, Donnel says if you build a performing arts pavilion, they will come – especially New Jerseyians who may be reluctant to travel to Manhattan to pay high ticket prices and parking fees. “New York is pretty much prohibitive,” Donnel says. “Here, you don’t have to go through the tunnel and pay for parking. I want to make clear, the pavilion is not just for Bayonne. It’s much bigger than Bayonne. If you have the Boston Pops perform, you’re going to get people from everywhere.” The pavilion will sit on approximately three acres of land near where the Marine Ocean Terminal was located, and a block from the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail’s 34th Street station. It will be capable of hosting events simultaneously; an expo or festival can take place in the expo area while audience members can relax on lawn chairs and enjoy a concert under the stars. The scale of it will be on the large side,” Donnel

Page 4- May 15th -May 31st, 2015 River View Observer

says. “Yes, it will be located in Bayonne, but it will have a greater impact on the area because of some of the acts we will bring in, big stars like Willie Nelson.” Donnel says the project is in the “growing pains” stage and because there are no footsteps to follow in, he and his team are breaking new ground. The land where it will be located was part of the Marine Ocean Terminal where there was once a military base.

Hudson Theater Ensemble presents “THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER” Cont’d from page 3 The children shows, which began when Hudson Theatre Ensemble first opened its doors have become a huge hit in Hoboken, especially during the town’s recent Baby Boom. One parent wrote to Pape and London about how moved she was by her child’s first theater experience at one of their children’s shows: “This was my 4 yearold’s first exposure to theater and he loved it so much,” the parent wrote. “I was nearly brought to tears. Thank you for putting on such a wonderful interactive show with such a talented kid-friendly cast! “

Another parent wrote: “Knowing you are in Hoboken is such a big boon. It was a thrill to me that my 5 year-old loved her first real introduction to theatre!” Doing children’s theater in the mile-square city is “a natural” artistic director Diana London says. “For many of the children who see our shows, the Hudson Theatre Ensemble marks their very first experience with theater,” London says. “We want that experience to be positive, so we put on shows that offer more than entertainment, they offer a message about goodness, kindness or truth that families can take home.”

There’s nothing like this in Hudson County.” A THEATER GROWS IN BAYONNE After holding public meetings at a Chiropractic office, the Bayonne Theater Company makes an official debut at its ROCKIN’ THE ARTS FUNDRAISER on Thurs, May 21 at the Bayonne Community Museum on 9th & Broadway. Adam J. Semanchick, President of the newly-formed company says it was started to bring theater artists in the community together for a common cause – to put on shows and give the people of Bayonne another venue to connect. For several years, Rich Dwyer of Bayonne has enjoyed the life of an actor in community theaters throughout New Jersey. He’s played Lurch in THE ADDAMS FAMILY musical for the Stony Hill Players in Summit; and Riff Raff in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW musical. Dwyer decided to get in on the planning stages with Semanchick and other Bayonne theater enthusiasts because, he says, there’s a new Bayonne arts boom and he wants to be part of it. “In the last three years,

raise $15,000 to cover the costs of tech equipment and produce the show. “We have a vast amount of resources,” Semanchick says. “Bayonne has a viable future in the arts.” IF YOU GO: Bayonne Theater Company Gala Thurs, May 21, 7-10 pm Rockin’ the Arts Fundraiser Bayonne Community Museum 229 Broadway (9th & B’way) Bayonne For more info, tix: (201) 780-8378 Check them out on Facebook, too.

Sweet and savory scones, the Italian pastry Occhio bue, and Orange Pound Cake are also on the menu. About every three months, Cocozza teaches coffee classes at her shop and she has very strong opinions about what makes a great cup of coffee. First of all, smell the coffee you purchase. If it’s stale, it will have a rancid smell. Therefore, she says it’s better to purchase coffee from a smaller roasting company because the coffee will be fresher than big brand names, and of a better quality, too. Expect to pay $12-$15 for a pound of good coffee, and grind your own beans for freshness. “Grind as you go,” Cocozza says. “The oils in the coffee start to dry out quickly.” You can purchase really good coffee, but you also have to know how to brew it. “Get the person who is Cont’d on page 18

It has to be 197 degrees to brew espresso; 200 degrees to brew coffee, or you won’t get the right extraction.” A destination for people to connect, that’s how Cocozza sees 9 Bar Cafe. She puts in a lot of time at her bistro – more than 80 hours a week – and it’s a labor of love for Cocozza and husband Giancarlo Mongera who supports her efforts 100 percent, she says.

Cocozza’s also a huge fan of the products she serves her customers. “I love coffee,” Cocozza says. “I could drink it all day.” If you go: 9 BAR CAFÉ 18 Erie Street, JC (201) 432-2000 www.cafeninebar.com
