ART POV
John McInerney of HC Art Supply Checks Out Hudson’s Art Scene Observes Changes Past & Present
By Sally Deering
John McInerney’s
view of Hudson’s art scene begins at his corner storefront, Hudson County Art Supply on First Street in Jersey City, where he perches himself at a desk in the window with a view of the city outside. McInerney doesn’t just sell art supplies to local artists, he supports the local art scene as a good friend to many of the artists and by attending gallery openings all over Hudson. In the years since he opened his shop in 2003, McInerney has witnessed the art scene’s changes, the flux of artists’ creativity, and the flow of artists moving in and moving on. McInerney believes that no matter how high rents sky rocket, or how expensive it becomes to live in the shadow of Manhattan, Hudson’s art scene will continue to change – and thrive. RVO: What made you want open an art supply store in Jersey City? MI: I was looking to invest in a business, but I didn’t have an idea what business I wanted to do. I had already been here a few years. I had bought a house, rented it, bought another two-family house that I was fixing up to flip. I was renting out the apartments and I met a lot of people that were new to the area and a lot of them were
whole town. In Jersey City, there’s a different personality. In Jersey City, artists are in the Heights, Greenville, it’s a big city: different wards with different personalities. Hoboken has less elbow room. It’s harder to swing a hammer or lift a brush.
artists. You could see people clutching their art supplies going though the turnstiles on the PATH train from New York. RVO: Why then an art supply store and not a hardware store or coffee shop? MI: I figured I’d open an art supply because I knew it was a descent business, a good fun business that could support itself, and a good way to get to know people. I was meeting a lot of artists.
RVO: What did you do before you opened Hudson County Art Supply? MI: I had been working for other people. I tried marketing. I was looking to get into a business myself and Jersey City was one of the few places in the Metropolitan Area where I could live and have easy access to New York City. Everybody sees opportunity in Jersey City. A lot of people move here because they see opportunity. RVO: You saw the opportunity to build a life in Jersey City? MI: I came here because it was a cheap place to live, and has a variety of people. Jersey City has a nice personality to it. All different types of people live together pretty well here most of the time. Jersey City is amicable to different types,

RVO: You attend a lot of art shows; do you see any trends in what local artists are doing? MI: The work I see now, everyone wants different things. The artists are creating for themselves. I used to have a space at Mana Contemporary. I go over there now, and I’m seeing what I wanted to see. They have a huge water tower. I used to wonder why is there no art there, and now there’s a paste-up. That’s the thing with Jersey City. There’s new energy all the time. The artists might have different things to say, different reflections on, say (President) Trump, and that’s art. Art is art and you support it. RVO: What do you think of Jersey City’s Murals Project, which has had some controversy? MI: I like the people that are doing the Jersey City Murals Project. I like that Mayor Fulop wants to have a Jersey City art scene. The murals are all subjective. One person complaining Cont’d on page 3
ART POV doesn’t stop it from continuing Everybody interprets the work in a different way. RVO: Did you study art? MI: I enjoy art as therapy. I do art because I enjoy it, like when you’re a kid exploring. RVO: The art in Hudson, especialy Jersey City and Hoboken seems to be less pretentious, more straightforward, no pastoral scenes. What’s your take? MI: The artists in Jersey City show their art for the sake of art. In Jersey City, the community supports it, compared to most cities.

Two Solo Shows at JC Theatre Center from the Woman’s Perspective A Child of Deaf Parents and One Woman’s Dating Journey
By Sally Deering

loria Rosen grew up reading lips and making words with her hands. The child of deaf parents, Rosen has a lot to say about the experience in her onewoman show Listen...Can You Hear Me Now? to be performed Saturday & Sunday, May 20 and May 21 at the Jersey City Theatre Center’s Merseles Studios. Sunday’s performance will be ASL interpreted and followed by an artist talkback. On Thursday & Friday, June 1 & 2, Lisa Strum takes to the stage in her one-woman show, She Gon’ Learn, also at the JCTC’s Merseles Studios, where Strum steps from behind the scenes as the company’s theater coordinator to actress in a play she wrote about dating and coming to terms with her feelings about being men, relationships and living single. She Gon’ Learn premiered two years ago at the Emerging Artist Theatre Festival at TADA! followed by sold out shows at the United Solo Festival at Theatre Row, where the play received one of the festival’s Best Solo Show Awards. Both She Gon’ Learn and Listen...Can You Hear Me Now? are part of the Disruption series currently running at the Jersey City

and specifically, the experiences of hearing children born to deaf parents – front and center,” Lisa Strum, JCTC’s Associate Theatre Coordinator says. “In today’s social climate where marginalized groups continue to navigate invisibility, it’s exciting to have a piece of theater that disrupts the status quo of what most would consider a normal American experience.” DATING, LOVE, EMPOWERMENT Strum, also an actress and writer, performs her onewoman show SHE GON’

Strum first got the idea to do a one-woman show about dating and relationships while writing poetry riding the train. “I started writing a lot of poetry on the train,” Strum says, “poetic tirades about dating experiences and personal things that were going on. At some point, I looked at what I wrote about love, relationships, self-esteem, and learning how to love yourself. I was doing personal inventory. How did I learn how to love? Where did that come from?” Cont’d on page 9

FLYING SOLO Cont’d from page 7 Strum’s solo show is a series of vignettes, she says, scenes about speed dating, meeting a potential lover on the street, getting consoled by her grandmother. “Lisa’s play is both
incredibly honest and incredibly funny,” Olga Levina, Artistic Director of JCTC says. “She shows us a segment of society often overlooked – African American women who are well-educated and striving
to succeed in life, but finding the search for love to be surprisingly complicated and difficult. Her story is one many women can relate to, especially how she ultimately finds empowerment as a woman.”
“I think what makes this show unique is that it’s a mirror,” Strum says. “I think its empowering seeing someone reveal their truth in a very uncompromising way. I’m not cutting
any corners, I’m not candycoating, I’m saying it like it is.” If you go Sat, May 20, 8 pm; Sun, May 21, 4 pm Listen… Can You Hear Me Now Tix: $20; students/seniors $15 Thurs, Jun 1 at 7:30 pm; Fri, Jun 2 & Sat, June 3: 8 pm She Gon’ Learn Tix: $25; students/seniors $18 Merseles Studios Jersey City Theater Center 339 Newark Ave, JC (201) 795-5386 To purchase tix: www. jctcenter.org.
