When the girl is kidnapped by corrupt Federal Agents posing as his former partners, the lives of everyone Finn knows are pulled into a relentless vortex by the dirty cops convinced Finn has her, the Feds waiting on Finn to pound his way to them, and a dozen low-lives from all sides sensing the chance of a huge, multi-million dollar score.” Victims: (Dir: David Bryant) As a camera rolls the van doors burst open. today’s independent filmmakers – each with a story to tell. And who knows, Jersey City may soon join the ranks of Sundance and Tribecca as the “go to” place for film festival-goers and the who’s who in the film industry. DeNiro did it for Trebecca; maybe Sorvino will do the same for Jersey City.

Everything’s Comin’ up Tulips

Jersey City Volunteers to plant ‘seeds’ that grow Community Pride By Riverview Observer staff

Jersey City’s brick and mortar landscape could use some TLC from Mother Nature, clay pots of yellow daffodils on street corners, picturesque clusters of red tulips blooming in vacant lots; entranceways to city buildings as flowery as a June wedding. On Sat, Oct 22, the Jersey City Parks Coalition hosts the “Big Dig” where trowel-wielding volunteers will plant 17,000 daffodils and tulips in 80 locations throughout the city. It’s all part of “Make a Difference Day!” a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, the Division of Parks Forestry; Cultural Affairs and the Jersey City Parks Coalition. The event recalls the “fix a window” turnabout in New York City, years back, where broken windows Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy announces in Chelsea brought change to the neighborhood when local advocates began to repair their broken neighborhoods “Big Dig”Day at a press conference in front of City Hall and plant seeds for community pride. The mayor’s office is still looking for volunteers to get their hands dirty in an effort to pretty-up Jersey City’s hard-as-conrete image. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy held a press conference, recently, announcing the city’s efforts for the “Big Dig” which will be held in dozens of city parks, schools, libraries, cemeteries, select open spaces and gateways to the city. Donations are being raised from individuals and corporations who are committed to the beautification of their hometown and who see this as an investment that will keep on giving year after year. “For the past few years, my office has been involved in recognizing Make a Difference Day! with events in Jersey City,” said Mayor Healy. “However, this year is different as this is the first time we have had one, overarching event for the entire city. We thank the Jersey City Parks Coalition for this concept of coordinated bulb planting throughout the city and for all of their hard work to get this project off the ground.” Begun in 1990 as a national day dedicated to helping others, Make a Difference Day! is an annual event sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine on the fourth Saturday of every October. Volunteers can join a group project or come up with their own project, like spending the day at a soup kitchen or helping an elderly neighbor around the house. Those who can’t participate on Saturday for religious reasons can do their community service on Sunday. This is the first citywide event for the Jersey City Parks Coalition although the Coalition has established Community Gardens in 10 of their 14 member parks groups. Since 2004, spring plantings and fall bulbs have been making a difference in parks such as Pershing Field, Van Vorst Park, Riverview-Fisk Park, Sgt. Anthony Park, Ercel Webb Park, as well as Washington Park and Lincoln Park. “We really saw this as a way of making a difference in our community by planting bulbs that bloom in the spring, yielding colorful flowers in our parks and at our gateways,” said Charlene Burke, project manager for the Big Dig. “Participating in an event like this is not only a great way to improve your community, but also helps you meet your neighbors that share a common goal.” In addition to sponsorship from the City of Jersey City, the Big Dig is sponsored by Century 21 Plaza Realty, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority, Liberty State Park, PSE&G, United Water, and The Westin Jersey City, as well as other local businesses, organizations, and Jersey City residents. “Planting bulbs in every ward and at prominent and visible entries will hopefully encourage neighbors to take the next step in the spring of 2012 and develop small community gardens which the City is encouraging through our Adopt-A-Lot program and our 365 Days of Green program,” Mayor Healy said. “We encourage residents to come out and support this event and in the days following to continue to help make Jersey City a greener city.” For more information, to make a donation, or to volunteer for the Big Dig, call Laura Skolar 201-259-1800 or Charlene Burke at 201344-2060 or visit the Jersey City Parks Coalition website at www.jcparks.org.

restaurant VIEWS THE BRIGHTSIDE TAVERN Ibby’s Falafel comes to Hoboken–Oh Lucky Town! Where Everybody knows your Name By TrySally theDeering Brightside Tavern in Jersey City for Food, Drink, Fun

For 17 years Adnan “Ibby” Kwara toiled in his 450-square foot restaurant on Grove Street in Jersey City, perfecting the perfect falafel – a round, crunchyon-the-outside, moist-on-the-inside chickpea ball that has become a popular dish around town. Packed inside a pita with lettuce, tomato, yogurt sauce and seasonings, the falafel sandwich is the perfect pick-me-up that doesn’t weigh you down like a burger, doesn’t cost much and is actually good for you. In September, Ibby branched out and open his second restaurant in Hudson, Ibby’s Falafel on Washington Street in Hoboken, an open, modern “Falafeteria” that serves homemade Schawarma, Middle Eastern dishes and the tastiest Turkish coffee that you wouldn’t By Sally Deering dare put a spoonful of sugar in. “Ibby’s is being tested by all the competition,” Ibby says. “That’s what’s great about this country. They know how to filter out the good from the bad. We are the leader in the industry.” You’ll get no argument here. I dined at Ibby’s in Jersey City many times, picking up falafel sandwiches on the run or sitting outside at the bistro tables, dining on hummus, stuffed grape leaves and spinach pies. In Hoboken, Ibby’s Falafel is just as great. I tried the hummus and it was spicy and delicious. The spinach pies were light with a tangy seasoning. Everything is homemade on the premises. The meats for the Schawarma are layered chicken and lamb that are marinated, seasoned and sliced right from the spit (think Gyros). Ibby’s gets his meats fresh from a Bayonne butcher and his produce is also local. Ibby also makes homemade desserts.I tried a Kanafe, shredded pistachio, filo dough and honey – and it was yummy, especially with a cup of Turkish coffee. Ibby serves vegetarian sandwiches and platters like Baba Ghanoush, baked eggplant with fresh parsley, lemon, Tahini, and imported olive oil; Grape Leaves, vine leaves stuffed with seasoned rice and mint; Foul Madammes (served hot, Middle-Eastern style) with Fava beans, fresh parsley, tomatoes, onions, lemon and imported olive oil. Meat-filled sandwiches and platters include Ibby’s Famous Shawarma, layers of fresh seasoned lamb with spices; Chicken Shawarma, layers of fresh marinated chicken breast with spices; Shish Kabob, cubed lamb, seasoned and grilled; Kafte Kabob, ground lamb seasoned and grilled with fresh parsley and onions; Chicken Kabob, marinated chicken breast, seasoned and grilled; Ibby’s Combo Sandwich, falafel, hummus, Baba Ghanoush, with choice of lamb or chicken Shawarma; and Ibby’s Combo Platter with falafel, hummus, Baba Ghanoush, salad, and choice of lamb or chicken Shawarma. Ibby’s Falafel has side dishes, desserts, coffees and other beverages. And when it comes to falafels, Ibby says it best: “It’s not just another falafel restaurant – it’s Ibby’s.” IBBY’S FALAFEL Hours: 10am - Midnight 614 Washington Street Hoboken, NJ 201-610-1300 303 Grove Street Jersey City, NJ (201) 432-2400
