Great Things to Do and See on the Hudson Waterfront

Yoga, Dance, Music, Film and so much more By Sally Deering

Summer’s just around the corner and after the winter we had, every day should feel like the 4th of July. One of the many benefits of living here on the Hudson is not only our close proximity to all things Manhattan, but the many activities that are offered either on the water or close to it. From kayaking to dance performances to film screenings on a starry night, there are plenty of fun things to do this summer; here’s a sampling….. he got the call, and an hour later opera singer Giselle Bellas of Jersey City was in Avatar Studios in Manhattan working out a song with Louis C.K. for the 5th episode of his Peabody and Emmy Award winning TV Show LOUIE (Thursdays, 10:30 pm, FX). Louis C.K. sang the lyrics he wrote into an iPhone and left Giselle to collaborate with his band SweetPro, which does all the original music for the series. The result: Giselle sang a haunting tune called “Diarrhea” that plays over the episode’s losing credits.

Since that fateful call made by Giselle’s producer Adam Tilzer, who is also the sound engineer on LOUIE, Giselle has turned in performances on six LOUIE episodes collaborating with Louis C.K. and SweetPro and singing tunes that show off her vocal versatility, 4-octave range and sense of humor. “I did all the female vocals for the show,” Giselle says on a coffee break at a Jersey City bagel shop. “For one scene, I had to scream ‘Why? Why?’ over and over in the style of a French woman.” Classically trained, Giselle began her music studies when she was a kid growing up in Orlando, Florida, with her single mom who raised her on a waitress’s earnings, taking extra jobs to keep food on the table and music in

Given a full opera scholarship, Giselle attended the Music Conservatory at the New World School of the Arts in Miami. She performed solo at Carnegie Hall and then transferred from the New World School to The New School in Manhattan where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature. Her opera credits include roles in HANSEL AND GRETEL, DON GIOVANNI, L’ELISIR D’AMORE, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, L’AMICO FRITZ, and LA BOHÈME. That was back when Giselle had set her sights on an opera career, performing all the great lyric soprano parts in opera houses all over the world. She even held a job at the

Met gift shop in Manhattan hunting down obscure opera recordings for customers while soaking up the opera scene. “I was surrounded by

Communityminded, she volunteers with the Jersey City Youth Foundation and has sung “The Star-Spangled Banner” at several events sponsored by the Jersey City Mayor’s Office. Recently, she made a non-exclusive agreement with Joma Music Group which will be promoting her songs to TV and film projects. “They put songs on TV

shows like ‘Scandal’,” Giselle says. Will she be adding Season 6 of LOUIE to her fall schedule? It’s too soon to tell, she says. Still, fingers are crossed and hopes are high. She describes Louis C.K. as a sensitive genius and it seems her work on LOUIE has not only given her the opportunity to create with one of the greatest comics of our time, it inspired her to write and sing her own tunes far from the world of opera. (My songs) are Pop, but

THINGS ARE SMOKIN’ AT LOUIE’S BBQ PIT Owner Luis Morilla Smokes & Seasons BBQ with Latin Flavors and Texas Style By Sally Deering

S

ituated in the middle of Palisade Avenue on 51st Street in West New York, Louie’s BBQ Pit serves ribs, chicken, brisket and pulled pork smoked and barbecued in owner Luis Morilla’s secret seasonings. Morilla opened his eatery just five weeks ago and his take-out has already taken off. Louie’s BBQ Pit has a simple menu that packs a wallop of smokin’ flavor in its dishes. It features Pork and Beef Ribs, Chicken, Brisket and Pulled Pork – smoked, seasoned and barbecued Texas style. There’s a Whole Chicken with Rice and Beans, a Full Rack of Pork Ribs with Rice and Beans; Beef Ribs with Rice and Beans; and Pulled Pork, Chicken & Brisket Sandwiches. Customers can order Family Meals like a Whole Chicken, 6 Pork Ribs and Rice and Beans combo; and a Full Rack of Pork Ribs with Rice and Beans. Louie’s BBQ Pit serves yummy sides, too, like Tamales and Chicken Croquettes; and you can order Brisket by the pound. The urban eatery features a counter and stools for those who want to eatin. Upstairs, Morilla marinades, rubs, seasons,

and smokes the meats he serves in oak wood. It’s also where he keeps a book of secret recipes, mainly the seasonings he uses for his rubs and marinades. Morilla brines chicken, and marinades brisket and pulled pork from 18-22 hours before barbecuing. “I like to please people,” Morilla says, taking a much-needed break outside his eatery. “I enjoy cooking and I cook good smoked barbecue.” Born in Cuba, Luis Morilla came to the U.S. when he was 17. His family settled in West New York where Morilla graduated from Memorial High School. He went on to Kean College for two years and from there went into business selling clothes in New York and then Union City. Years later, he turned to cooking. After only five weeks, Louie’s BBQ Pit already has signature dishes like the Pulled Pork that are turning one-time customers into regulars. One customer stopped in recently for Morilla’s barbecue who was doing business in New York and hails from Louisville, Kentucky. Mainly a takeout spot, Louie’s BBQ Pit delivers to West New York and town beyond like North Bergen, Guttenberg, Weehawken, and Union City. Morilla hopes to get the word out to

and my son Louie liked barbecue,” Morilla says. “It was something we enjoyed together like baseball,

The late Louis Morilla

If you look closely at Louie’s BBQ Pit logo, you’ll see a blue baseball cap with the No. 22 on top of the “o” in Louie. It stands for Morilla’s son Louis Morilla and the cap he wore as a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2010, Louis Morilla lost his life from a gunshot wound during an altercation in Passaic. Five years later, Luis opened Louie’s BBQ Pit, naming the eatery after his son. On the baseball field, Louis Morilla’s position was Catcher, but he was also a great hitter, his dad says. Luis Morilla remembers when a Major League Baseball scout was coming to see his son play and the young Louie said to his dad: “All I want is for them to pitch to me; I’ll take it from there,” Luis recalls. BIG DINOS TO INSPIRE SMALL READERS

FIELD STATION: DINOSAURS to Visit 19 NJ Libraries Dinos Come to Hoboken Public Library Thurs, June 25 The school year is coming to a close once again and libraries are encouraging children to take advantage of the time off to explore some of the many great books available as part of New Jersey’s Summer Reading program. This year’s theme is “Every Story Has a Hero,” and Field Station: Dinosaurs wants to encourage youngsters to take their reading skills to new heights when their annual tour takes them to 19 different library branches. This is the fourth consecutive year Field Station: Dinosaurs has been involved with New Jersey’s summer reading program. Field Station: Dinosaurs in Secaucus is a world-class family attraction that combines cutting-edge science with the creative minds of great artists and teachers to

experience that’s thrilling, educational and fun with over thirty life-sized, realistic dinosaurs that come to life thanks to the brilliant engineering of the world’s leading roboticists and the imagination of our artists. Scientists from the New Jersey State Museum have worked to ensure that the exhibition encompasses the latest theories and discoveries in the fields of paleontology, geology, and environmental studies but at the center of it all is the fun, the joy and the wonder of dinosaurs. On the library tour, the Field Station’s talented

Dinosaur Troubadour will have kids singing and dancing along to original songs about dinosaurs – naturally! Each visit will culminate in a special surprise guest – a 15-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex that kids will have a chance to meet. “My love of dinosaurs came from some great books about them that I read during summers as a youngster right here in New Jersey,” Guy Gesell, Executive Producer of Field Station: Dinosaurs, says. “Our Dinosaur Troubadour and our incredible T-Rex are on a mission to share that same excitement about reading that I felt as a child and that’s why we love being part of the summer reading program.” However, this year’s library tour was not without its challenges as sponsorship dollars were not available. “Libraries statewide have come to rely on us to help launch their summer reading program,” Gesell says. “We didn’t want all

those families and children to miss a great experience, so we covered most of the expenses and the libraries helped as well.” Field Station: Dinosaurs’ “Every Story Has a Hero” Tour will take place at the following: Jun 18, 3:15 pm, Manasquan Public Library, 55 Broad St. Jun 19, 3:30 pm, West Orange Public Library, 46 Mount Pleasant Ave Jun 22, 11 am, Plainfield Public Library, 800 Park Ave. Jun 22, 2 pm, Kinnelon Public Library, 132 Kinnelon Rd. International Founder and CEO Steve Morris presented all awards at the Annual Awards Dinner event held recently in Somerset, NJ. Out of the 34 offices operated in New Jersey, EXIT On The Hudson Realty ranked #1 in volume of transactions successfully closed, #1 in volume of Gross Commissions earned by the staff, and #2 in Total Dollar volume of Real Estate sales transactions. That combination of achievements earned the office the ranking of “Office of the Year” as well. It is the second time in 4 years that the office was the recipient of that particular honor Annette Rubin, franchise owner and Broker of Record for EXIT On The Hudson Realty said,” I am exceptionally proud of mystaff and their collective hard work. This is no small achievement. Our office is a modest size office, and yet we outperformed offices with staffing counts of 80 to 90 agents in 2 and 3 office locations and several of those are in areas with much more expensive homes to sell!” Mrs. Rubin attributed the success to several factors. “Foremost is the company culture we operate with. We don’t compete with each other – our goal is to work together for the best interest of our clients, not compete with each other for business. You seldom achieve success in this industry without team effort.” She also stressed that ongoing

training classes and continuing education of the agents is a priority in her office. “Developing skills at negotiation and market knowledge are critical in this industry”, she added. Top honors for individual agents’ production volume for 2014 went to Rumbi Padzarondora and Patricia Scord, and top dollar volume went to Dee Huang. Mrs. Rubin said. “These young women are hard working, dedicated, and they love what they do. It shows in their successes!”
