MAITRESSE, A Series of 1980 Photographs by Trix Rosen at MOMA Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 Now Thru April 2018
By Sally Deering Historic preservation, fine art, photojournalism – Trix Rosen’s work spans genres and decades, from photographing villages in the Philippines, and teaching photography at a refugee camp, to capturing the faded beauty of Broadway’s Biltmore Theatre before the wrecking ball arrived. In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Rosen, with her camera, captured the bold playfulness and seriousness of women of the time who revealed a true beauty that Madison Avenue overlooked. Rosen’s photographs of those women, 98 pictures in all, are a collection Rosen calls MAITRESSE and they are part of a new show at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in Manhattan. Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983, explores the cultural happenings that went on at Club 57, an alternative venue for a diversity of people with a diversity of talent and bravado. In 1980, Rosen was asked to do a feminist slide show at Club 57 and she showed MAITRESSE. (The show at MOMA runs through April 2018.) Club 57 focuses on the years 1978-83 when theater, visual and music artists of the time tried

Museum & Community Center in Journal Square Move Forward with Financing for Building Fresh off his winning a second term as Mayor of Jersey City, Mayor Steve Fulop has announced on November 13th that the New Jersey Local Finance Board has authorized the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) to issue $10 million in redevelopment bonds for the purchase of the building that will become the home to a new Jersey City Museum and community center in Journal Square. The museum and community center will be located at the PathSide Building at 25 Sip Avenue adjacent to the Journal Square PATH station -- a five-story, approximately 55,000 square foot building currently owned by the Hudson County Community College. “As a culturally diverse city with a thriving arts community, Jersey City should have a museum and one that is a premier regional destination,”
said Mayor Fulop.“Our vision for Journal Square is to make it the cultural center of the city, with the museum and community center as an anchor. “We are working to attract a partner with national status to collaborate on the operations and programming as well as creating a space for local artists to exhibit their work,” added Mayor Fulop. The financing also covers the hiring of a consultant to design a strategic plan for the museum and community center for both capital improvements and programming, for which an RFP has been issued. Earlier this fall an agreement was executed by the JCRA to purchase the property from the community college, and in September the JCRA authorized the purchase of the building for $9 million. The $10 million of redevelopment bonds that will be issued will cover the purchase of the building.
Once acquired, the JCRA will renovate the building to facilitate the conversion of the building into a museum and comIn 2010, the prior munity center. Jersey City Museum, While the current intention which was located on is to focus on the visual

rt shows bring people together to see and enjoy art and to meet others who feel the same way. Sometimes, the same goes for the artists, who build friendships with other artists while exhibiting their work. That’s the way painter Elliot Appel and photographer Charlann Meluso began a friendship that resulted in a creative collaboration. Since both artists have a passion for architecture, they decided to collaborate on a show. SHARED VISION recently opened at the JCC of Bayonne on Kennedy Blvd. and will be on view through December. The show features 30 paintings and photographs: Appel’s paintings of New York and Hoboken’s nooks & crannies including a city wall covered in tags and ripped posters; the colorful façade of a Chinese bakery and the outside “stoop” of Hoboken brownstones. Meluso’s photographs include places she’s visited during trips to Amsterdam, Italy and Spain. Erin Kachmar curated the show. The exhibit will feature the newest work of Ibou and Liz Ndoye. Recently married, these two artists have had the unique opportunity of working side by side while creating completely new and exciting works of art. Ndoye continues to explore the world and culture of her “doll” creatures. The show will include reverse glass paintings (a Senegalese technique used by Ibou Ndoye and taught to Liz Cohen Ndoye), sculpture, book art, and works on paper and canvas. JERSEY CITY RESTAURANT SCENE PIONEER TURNS 14
This November, one of the orginal restaurants that started it all on Downtown Jersey City’s bustling Restaurant Row, is turning 14. LITM, 140 Newark Ave., is celebrating its 14th anniversary with a 70’s-themed shindig on Saturday, Nov. 18 inspired by the MFSB disco jam “Love is the Message” that gave it its name. For over a decade, LITM has been at the forefront of downtown’s cultural rise. As one of the first cocktail bars in the area and one of JC’s more prominent art galleries, the restaurant has helped nourish local creatives in more ways than one. LITM, which was opened by city native Jelynne Jardiniano in late 2003, has also helped inspire local small business owners to open up their own eateries and shops. Jardiniano even penned a book, “Restaurant from Scratch,” to help other entrepreneurs follow in her footsteps. Today, LITM continues to be an artistic and culinary highlight of the downtown area thanks to general manager and curator Andrea Morin, chef Eduardo Rugiero and a talented bar staff. The restaurant also loves giving back to the community. This year alone, LITM’s special events have helped raise money for organizations like Planned Parenthood, Companion Animal Trust, Hudson Pride Connections Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Hudson County’s STEM program, Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery, American
Indian College Fund and hurricane relief efforts. They’ve also supported local arts with their monthly gallery exhibits, live music and small fundraisers for independent artists. Celebrate LITM’s birthday at Love is the Message on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 6 p.m. til late. Guests will enjoy: RETRO COCKTAILS Sip on classic concoctions stars enjoyed at Studio 54 and at discotheques all around the world! 70’S & DISCO DANCING WITH LIVE DJ Let DJ Street Justice get you into a boogie groove with tunes by Bee Gees; Earth, Wind & Fire; hometown heroes Kool & the Gang and more! CAKE & CHAMPAGNE TOAST A birthday party is nothing without delicious cake, and a toast to a bright future! Our delicious tres leche cake will be provided by Las Chicas Bakery in Union City. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL Come between 5 to 7 and enjoy a special weekend edition of our Happy Hour with $5 martinis, house wines & craft beer plus $4 select beers! SATURDAY SPECIALS Enjoy $7 nachos and $7 iced tea cocktails all night DELICIOUS EATS Chow down on your LITM favorites, or try something new! Kitchen open til midnight DRESS TO IMPRESS 70’s attire (disco, glam, punk) is encouraged, but absolutely NOT required! Just come in something that makes you feel fabulous!
LITM owner Jelynne Jardiniano Morse looks on while general manager Andrea Morin blows out the candles on their 13th Anniversary cake
Guests who love the Disco Era but can’t make Saturday’s festivities should come to Boogie Nights: 70’s Themed Karaoke on Monday, Nov. 20 at 9 p.m. Sing a 70’s song for a chance to win a $25 gift card and a mule cocktail of your choice! (More info here.) For more information, visit LITM.com or see our Facebook event page. If You Go LITM 140 Newark Ave Jersey City Sat. Nov 18 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Free entry. Drinks and food available for purchase. Cake and champagne toast provided late in evening.
