ADRIFT IN A VANISHING CITY

Vincent Czyz pens Stories of Restless Dreamers and a Blue Jean Baby Queen By Sally Deering Like many young writers in their 20s searching for the road less traveled, Vincent Czyz packed up his car one day and hit the highway for a crosscountry trip. Jack Kerouac did it as a member of the Beat Generation; Hippies in the 60s did it to find girls with flowers in their hair. To a budding writer, The West can be as inviting as a ballpoint pen and a clean sheet of paper. Czyz’s travels to find adventure led him to a town in Kansas and a colorful cast of characters who were hard-drinking, had their hearts broken more than

Vincent Czyz once, and could tell a story as good as Louis C.K. Guys with names like Zirque, the Blue Jean Queen, and Stevie “The Duke of” Palluka. These characters – and others – are the heart and soul of “Adrift in a Vanishing City,” (Rain Mountain Press, 239 pgs; paperback; $18;) a collection of short

stories Czyz wrote with a sensitivity for soft-hearted, lonesome everymen – and women – roaming restlessly through life like stray dogs searching for a home. Czyz says his style of short story writing breaks away from the convention

where things get tied up in a neat little bow at the end. Instead his characters slip in and out of the stories like ghosts haunting each other’s dreams. “What I tried to do was fuse poetry and short story,” Czyz says, taking a mid-afternoon break at a Jersey City coffee shop. “I wanted something more intense. I didn’t want disposable sentences.” Here’s an excerpt from the character “Pap” who is 5’1”, hunchback and with a clubfoot. He’s the town drunk in love with the prettiest girl in town, similar to the main character in “The Hunchback of Notre

Dame,” Czyz says. “…Lookin out the window, the light growin, he spotted a pale moon, cold round rock up there, white and frostbitten, a high school-age god hurled himself an iceball through space. A new meaning to cold if he could be up there to feel it, him and his potbelly stove, everything on the whole miniature planet (misshapen like him, only done half way, s’posed to be a planet but look what happened, got shortchanged in a big way, only gets away with bein so ugly ‘cause it gives off a shine), him and his pot-belly Cont’d on pag 9

BATTER UP & GRAB THE BROOM HANDLE JC annual Stickball Tournament to bring Street Game to Ball Field By Sally Deering Baseball may be America’s favorite past-time; but back in the day, kids whose ballfield was a city street played their version of the game known as stickball. Stickball became popular in urban America back in the 1960s and 70s, and likely began when a kid couldn’t find a baseball bat for a game with his pals, so he grabbed his mom’s broomstick. Today the sport continues to be popular with leagues participating in tournaments throughout the country. On Sun, Aug. 9, the Jersey City Saints Stickball League will host the Jersey City annual Stickball

George Vega of the JC Saints Stickball League Tournament, a tradition that dates back to 1990, when four childhood friends – George Vega, Frank Castellano, Pete Carrion and Juan “Lefty” Mills, decided to start a Jersey City tournament and invited teams

from New York to compete. This year, the tournament will be played in Jersey City on the ball field at Christopher Columbus Drive between Barrow & Grove Streets. It begins 9 am and runs to 6 pm. “It’s a very competitive sport,” Carrion says. “You develop a camaraderie for life.” Playing in the 2015 Jersey City annual Stickball Tournament are members of the Jersey City Police Department, Jersey City Fire Department, The Jersey City Saints Stickball League, the East Harlem Old Timers, and the New York Emperors All Stars. There will be a kids’ game, too.

“The typical game is 7 innings,” Carrion says. “We’re going to do a fiveinning, double elimination game. Two losses and you’re out.” Vega, Castellano, Carrion and Mills grew up in Spanish Harlem in New York City in the late 1960s

and 70s and played all the popular street games like stoop ball, Jack on the pony and their favorite, stickball. One by one, the four friends moved from Spanish Harlem to Jersey City, first Carrion then the others followed. “It’s a lot nicer than where we grew up,” Carrion says. Jersey City is great, we love it.” The Jersey City Saints annual Stickball Tournament continues to grow because of Castellano’s commitment to fundraising with the monies raises paying for the hot dogs, hamburgers, water, sodas and juices that are given away Cont’d on page 19

ADRIFT IN A VANISHING CITY cont’d from page 5 stove’d be all the warmth in that corner a the universe, any other life up there’d come shuffling over to the beacon light. Pap Prometheus and his Amazin Woodburnin Stove…” “One character, Earl Kukovich, he’s a colorful character of Polish extraction, and one of the funniest people you’d ever meet,” Czyz says. “I’m skipping over the fact that he killed five people.” Then there’s Stevie, “The Earl of” Palluka, who was educated at Notre Dame and worked as a bookie. Czyz says: “I would go fishing with him,

partying, horseback riding and go with him on his bookie runs. This is the late 1980s-90s. Stevie was intense. He could recite T.S. Eliot and Allen Ginsberg. He wrote poetry, too.” Czyz roots poetic language with character, he says, and his writing has won several awards including the 1994 W. Faulkner -W. Wisdom Prize for Short Fiction. A 2011 Truman Capote Fellow at RutgersNewark, Czyz teaches freshman composition at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, and creative writing at The College of New Jersey in Newark. His students need only read his

Vincent Czyz with his book “A Drift in a Vanishing City”

book’s first chapter, “Zee Gee and the Blue Jean Baby Queen” to see that their teacher elegantly fuses prose with imagery, describing timeless moments as if remembering a dream. “Every writer expresses something intense,” Czyz says. “You ask yourself, ‘what words do I use that will make people feel what I felt? Like a sunset. How do I capture that in words?’” Many of Czyz’s characters are mysterious, and poets at heart yearning for something just beyond reach. Czyz, who cut his journalism teeth writing features for the North Jersey Herald News in Passaic, writes his characters with empathy and a deep feeling for humanity. On his travels to and from Kansas, Czyz says he had no intention of writing a book about the friends he had made. He kept a journal, sure, but he was just one of the boys, not a writer peeking into their lives from the outside. “I’m so sorry I didn’t have a tape recorder,” Czyz says. “They were so funny. There are a lot of good storytellers in The West where conversation is still more of an art.” Czyz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers-New Brunswick, and a Master’s degree in Comparative Literature from Columbia University. His short stories have been published in periodicals like Camera

Obscura, Georgetown Review, Skidrow Penthouse, The Massachusetts Review and Quiddity. He lived in Istanbul, Turkey, for 10 years where his fiction has been anthologized in Turkish, and Czyz now resides in Jersey City with his wife, Neslihan. In October, Czyz has a new book coming out, “The Christos Mosaic,” a thriller written for the commercial fiction market, he says, whereas “Adrift in a Vanishing City” was more a labor of love. At the end of the book, he recalls a pair of sneakers Steve “The Earl of” Palluka gave him in 2006. When he learned Palluka had passed away, Czyz and Neslihan took a road trip to visit Palluka’s grave. Czyz writes: “They were well past their expiration date, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw them out, so we rode half way across the country and put the sneakers on Stevie’s grave with a note – laminated with packing tape and tied to a lace – explaining their significance.” Where to buy “Adrift in a Vanishing City” “Adrift in a Vanishing City” can be purchased online at Amazon.com; and at Barnes & Noble bookstores; Three Lives Bookstore and Co. in Manhattan; and at Word bookstore on Newark Ave, Jersey City. Cooking with Heart at Carmela’s Piccola Cucina in Bayonne

From her Tiny Kitchen, Chef Carmela Suppa Serves Tasty, Traditional Italian Fare

By Sally Deering

Nestled among the storefronts on Avenue “C” between 25th and 26th Streets in Bayonne is Carmela’s Piccola Cucina, a cozy little Italian restaurant that serves hearty, home-style dishes from Northern and Southern Italy. In Italian, Piccola Cucina means “tiny kitchen” but that’s the only thing small about the place. Owner and Chef Carmela Suppa cooks serves up hearty portions of homestyle dishes that are delicious and seasoned just right. “You know when you do something you enjoy, you don’t think about anything else,” Suppa says, taking a break from her work at the stove. “Everything I make is cooked to order.” Carmela’s Piccola Cucina’s menu includes Antipasti like the tasty Calamari served tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside and with a choice of mild or hot sauce; Caprese Stacks, which is Roasted Eggplant, Fresh Mozzarella and Tomatoes; Stuffed Mushrooms with Roasted Peppers; and Antipasto Rustico, a Selection of Dry Meats and Sharp Provolone cheese. ($6.50-$8.95) Soups include Chicken and Minestrone and daily soup specials like Potato-Leek; and Lentil. ($350-$4.95) Pasta dishes include Pasta with Ham & & Mushrooms; and Pasta al Filetto di Pomodoro. ($10.95-$11.95) Fish dishes feature Flounder Marechiara; Shrimp Parmigiana; and Involtini di Flounder made with Pancetta and Spinach. ($13.95-$14.95) Chicken dishes include

Chicken Rustica, which is Chicken Breast with Mushrooms, Peppers, Sausage and Potatoes; and Lemon Chicken, Boneless Chicken Thighs in a Lemon Sauce. ($11.95$12.95) Suppa serves specials, too, like Fettuccine with Ricotta cheese and Asparagus. Suppa sautés the asparagus stems in garlic and olive oil and then adds them to the ricotta cheese which has been blended with the flowers of the asparagus. ($12.95) “I call it traditional American,” Suppa says. “I try all the dishes myself before I put them on the menu or make them specials. I like to try new things.” Coming in the fall, Suppa plans to add a Braciola dish, which is meat seasoned with garlic, parsley, cheese, rolled, and cooked in a red sauce; and Chicken Rollatini with a ham, rice and Ricotta cheese filing served in a white wine mushroom sauce. ($14.95) For dessert, Suppa serves Cream Puffs and Cannolis with home-made fillings; and Truffles ice cream in several flavors including Pistachio, Amaretto, and Chocolate Chip Mint. ($4.50) Since Carmela’s Piccola Cucina opened two years ago, Suppa has lots of regulars who come back again and again for her homestyle cooking. The Chicken, Minestrone, Lentil and Potato-Leek soups are very popular, Suppa says. So are the Chicken Parmagiana, Lemon Chicken and Involtini di Flounder. Pasta Primavera is also a favorite. Although this is Suppa’s first time as a restaurateur,

Chef Carmela Suppa creating delicious dishes from her “Piccola Cucina”

she is no stranger to the kitchen. Suppa grew up in Naples, Italy, and she was 15 when her family came to the U.S. and settled in Bayonne. She watched her mother and older sister cook and Suppa herself worked as a banquet chef for the Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange. “It was my internship,” Suppa says. “They have a restaurant and a banquet hall where they do weddings and parties.” Carmela’s Piccola Cucina’s dining room is painted a warm yellow and seats 40. There’s a large flat-screen TV for customers who like a little news while they dine, and dinner guests are treated to white linen tablecloths that dress up the tables and warm the room so that it almost feels like you’re dining in Suppa’s home. Suppa says that traditionally Italian families like to entertain and feed their guests. “When somebody comes in we cook something and we

all eat together or we offer coffee and cake,” Suppa says. “You sit around the table with the family and there’s a little bit of food and a little bit of red wine. That’s how we are.” Carmela’s Piccola Cucina is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner and brunch is served on on weekends. Suppa says the restaurant also delivers to local businesses and caters to customers who have to spend their lunch hours behind a desk or in a classroom. “This is fulfilling a dream I always had,” Suppa says. “Having a restaurant is something I’ve always wanted.”

Hoboken Historical Museum Opens Year-Long Exhibition,

“Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Voice & the Fans”

Honoring the 100th anniversary of the birth of Hoboken’s most famous native son, the Hoboken Historical Museum, 1301 Hudson St., opened a new exhibition, “Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Voice, & the Fans,” on Sunday, Aug. 2, with a free opening reception from 2 - 5 p.m. At 4 p.m., there was a live performance by Zack Alexander who kicked off the “First Sundays Sinatra Singers” series, featuring a different crooner each month at 4 pm. The exhibition will feature interactive displays and videos, cherished fan photographs and artifacts to illustrate the singer/actor’s formative years in Hoboken, and memories from long-time fans. Listening stations will be supplied by period-appropriate music players, from old radio sets and vinyl record players, to 8-track tape players, audio-cassette boomboxes and CD players, reflecting the remarkable span of his 60year career. The exhibition will remain on view through July 3, 2016, accompanied by related programming, including “First Sundays Sinatra Singers,” with support from the Hoboken Department of Cultural Affairs; “Second Tuesdays Sinatra Films,” with support from Projected Images of Hudson County; readings by noted authors; plus a big birthday bash on Dec. 12, 2015. Also on December 12, the Museum will unveil a new bronze star plaque honoring Sinatra’s centennial, to be installed in the walkway by the Museum’s entrance at 13th and Hudson Sts. Event details will be posted at hobokenmuseum.org. Sinatra was, as writer Bruce Bliven put it, “a kid

music and movies had meant so much to them. The same year, the Museum created a “Sinatra Walking Tour Map,”

from Hoboken who got the breaks.” He emerged from a blue-collar, working class, urban setting, where most guys, he once told an audience, became fighters or worked in factories. His own father, Martin, who immigrated from Sicily, started out as a boxer, fighting under the assumed name of Marty O’Brien to gain access to Irish-controlled gyms that wouldn’t admit Italians. His mother worked as well, as a midwife and also as a liaison for the largely Italian neighborhood to the city’s political bosses. The exhibition will shed light on how growing up in early 20th century Hoboken shaped the young singer. Although he was born in a coldwater flat in a neighborhood of newly arrived immigrants in Southwest Hoboken, his early years weren’t as rough as some biographers have portrayed. He was a rare only child, doted on by his mother, Dolly, who used her political savvy and gift for languages to improve her family’s station, eventually securing Marty a position with the city’s fire department when he could no longer fight professionally. By the time young Frank was 12, the Sinatras had moved to better housing in a more established neighborhood and he earned the nickname of “Slacksy O’Brien” for the dress pants he sported. In the 1920s and 30s, he was one of many aspiring young singers who performed on Hoboken’s

street corners, in pool halls and clubs, and in private homes—wherever they could get an audience. Sinatra’s big break came in 1935, when a Hoboken trio calling themselves the Three Flashes invited him to join them for a shot at the “American Idol” of its day, the radio program “Major Bowes and His Original Amateur Hour” (pictured at left). The Hoboken Four were a hit, and toured with other acts from the program for the next several months. Sinatra soon went solo, performing at the Rustic Cabin in Englewood, NJ, which was broadcast on WNEW’s radio program, Dance Parade, leading to an invitation to join the Harry James band. In 1939, he joined Tommy Dorsey’s band and became a sensation, earning the name “Swoonatra,” for causing teenage girls to faint at his concerts. He would go on to sell more records than any previous singer, and to pursue a successful Hollywood film career, including an Oscarwinning performance in “From Here to Eternity.” He and his pals in the “Rat Pack” defined the image of American cool in the 1950s and 60s. He survived personal and professional setbacks, as well as changes in musical tastes, and continued to tour and record successful records into his later years. When he died in 1998, fans swarmed Hoboken to mourn the man whose

STARGAZINE Aug. 2015 Aries- March 21 - April 19

Leo -July 23 - August 22

Sagittarius -Nov. 22 - Dec. 21

Jupiter, the abundance planet, has landed in your fourth house governing real estate. The buying, selling, renovation of your apartment or house will be easier and more enjoyable at this time. You will be able to turn your surroundings into a home and attract luck and have fun while doing so.

Freedom is your strength and at times your biggest weakness. You are outspoken honest and this is an asset but some times other people are just sneaky! To think that everyone is like you is a mistake. Be cautious and stay focused. This month will be an eye opener but end quite positively.

Taurus- April 20 - May 20

Virgo -August 23 - Sept. 22

Capricorn -Dec. 22 - Jan. 19

Your mind is filled with all things romantic this month. Activity to the fifth house indicates that true love may be on the way. Those Aries natives already involved will find their passion reignited. Cupid’s arrow will hit it’s mark like never before. Use it or lose it. Enjoy the hearts and flowers. You have gone through a few close calls with health issues in the past month. Some lessons have been learned the hard way! Now, however, you are on a mission and on the road to well being. Great news! As you increase your activity and think constructive thoughts you realize this is your life and you have taken control. Bravo!!

Gemini- May 21 - June 20 At times, you may be somewhat misleading when it comes to your hopes and wishes. Which of the Twins will get his way? Your mutable energy leads to the useless emotion of guilt. This month, you look at the big picture. You forgive yourself and move on with positive energy, after all, we are only human!

Cancer -June 21 - July 22 Mars in your sign gives you the energy to achieve your goals and the persistence to keep moving forward. Let not your heart be troubled! You still possess the gene for being kind although it is just not as evident in the month of August. Come September, your loving heart will overflow with joy.

Consultation available by phone, FaceTime, SKYPE, and in person

Why is it whenever you attempt an apology you seem to backtrack and blame the other party? It is not a sign of weakness to sincerely show vulnerability. The new improved Virgo has no problem being human! A little sweetness will go a long way. Others will be captivated by your kindness and you will get the advantage!

Libra-Sept. 23 - October 22

The astral advice for this month suggests you be up and doing. Libra, you are a major procrastinator at many times. Stop your scales from weighing everything! Just move forward in the most Venus sort of way. Action brings results but stagnation burdens the soul.

Scorpio - October 23 - Nov. 21

Saturn has wobbled back into the late degrees of your sign bringing with it some undiluted emotional debris. Clean your psychological house and make an effort to forget about the past. This is your mission and if you decide to accept it you will completely change your path and be on a positive new road towards happiness and love.

stargazing.fl@aol.com Judith Banta Lewis Astrologer 201 339-4555

Activity to the ninth house governing the higher mind and education is highlighted. Opportunities for you to cleanse outdated thought patterns will be evident and you are in for an emotional ride.!The final outcome, when the dust settles, is a new improved powerful Capricorn native.

Aquarius -Jan. 20 - Feb. 18 When you have stopped saving the world maybe you might find a little time for yourself! Your interest in universal matters is fine but could you pay your bills and wash your car? The astral advice suggests you consider your home and personal life a priority. Balance is required for the upcoming excitement of the next few months.

Pisces -Feb. 19 - March 20

As a water sign a story about water may clear your energy! There is a well you visit often with a beautiful vase. The well is dry but you think that your vase is broken because you haven’t received the nourishment of its life giving fluid. If you look elsewhere your emotional vessel will be filled. Simply put, you may be giving too much love to the wrong person!
