hey aren’t grandma’s doilies or the blanket she made for the birth of your first kid. Fiber artist Bayard of Jersey City creates art with yarn – miles and miles of yarn – in his new exhibition 3 Baby Bears 3 (In Five Parts) – a show of crocheted blankets adorning tiny beds reminiscent of Goldilocks & The Three Bears. 3 Baby Bears 3 opens on Thurs, Aug 10 at the Eonta Gallery (an old taxi stand converted to a gallery) on DeKalb St, right off Journal Square (close to the VIP Diner and Hudson County Community College’s Culinary Institute). The show will run through Sept. 30th and will be included in the roster of events for JC Fridays on Sept. 8 – both the opening reception and JC Fridays exhibition are from 6-to-9 pm. “This all started when a collector asked if I would do a piece for a bed for a guest room,” Bayard says. I thought, let me think about it. Instead of making samples, I did three
complete pieces which are going on three beds in the show. That’s Goldilocks. It starts with the idea, some input from outside, and it comes flowing out of me. I think about it, but I don’t think about it too much. It

just evolves and develops and becomes this amazing thing. This show is all crochet art.” Crochet isn’t something usually associated with male artists or craftsmen, Bayard says. “I’m a fiber artist and I work in crochet,” Bayard says. “When people see my work, they’re surprised and some of them say, you couldn’t have done this,

you’re not a woman. Crochet is a woman’s craft. Actually, crochet and knitting were originally done by men hundreds of years ago. It was taken over by women when it became a home-craft.” The show features 15 blankets cascading over small beds and several trees that look like they came from the animated film The Lorax. Those will be in
stalled in the entranceway. “I had these pieces that many people thought were trees from Dr. Seuss, from the story The Lorax – they actually kind of look like that,” Bayard says. “I had some work at the Cathedral Arts Festival (at Grace Church Van Vorst in Jersey City) and the kids were all going crazy for them. So we installed these trees in the entryway. Now you
come through the forest and that’s the bears’ house.” Along with the show at Cathedral Arts, Bayard has had three shows at Eonta and a show at Governor’s Island which featured large inflatables he created. “They were geometric and everyone had to jump up and down on them,” Bayard says. “People liked touching them, which is something in all my work. People want to touch it.” Bayard invites viewers to touch the crocheted blankets he created for 3 Baby Bears 3, too. “The work ‘asks’ to be touched,” Bayard says. “It’s very tactile, and to deny people that is just snobbery. Should art only be for our eyes? So please touch. It makes the viewer more of a participant.” At Bayard’s opening of 3 Baby Bears 3 on August 10, Eonta will be filled with music along with Bayard’s art works. Cupkakos Moldinius, musicians who play synthesizer and cello will create ambient music. On Sept 8, for JC Fridays, a ca pella group Cabaret Sauvignon will perform at Cont’d on page 3

Launched in November 2012, Eonta is an art and performance venue inspired by Gertrude Stein’s salon where artists and writers met to discuss literature, art and music. Eonta hosts art exhibitions, literary readings, dance concerts, and educational programs. “Bayard was chosen as our summer artist because his internationally renowned whimsical work is a mathematical journey with a statement,” Eonta’s Communications Director Eva Galens says. “Fiber art is in the minority of visual arts when it comes to exhibition— it’s not as
strict as framed art on walls— which is why Bayard’s keen enthusiasm about the interaction with his latest installation is so unique. Bayard wants his friends and neighbors to interact with his work, to engage his community in the arts.” If you go Thurs, Aug 10 & Fri, Sept 8; 6-9 pm Bayard/3 Baby Bears 3 Eonta Gallery 34 DeKalb Ave, JC (201) 536-1119

every turn you’ll see a familiar face at La Festa Italiana 2017, Holy Rosary Church’s 114th annual “Old World” Italian Street Festival to be held in Downtown Jersey City. For five consecutive days and nights, from Wed, Aug. 9th through Sun, Aug. 13th, Sixth & Brunswick Streets will be rockin’ with live bands, swinging soloists, fabulous foods, thirst-quenching drinks and frolicking fun for the kids. (Hours are Wed-Fri, 5 pm11 pm; Sat & Sun, 3 pm-11 pm.) The entertainment roster is a Who’s Who of talent that gets the hips swaying and the heart thumping. Groups like The B-Street Band, The Cameos and Total Soul know how to get Festa-goers dancing in the streets. Callahan’s Hot Dogs, Delenio’s pizza, Gia’s Gelato and Pure & Simple Flatbreads’ brick oven pizzas are just a few of the vendors offering delicious food & libations. As the countdown to Aug. 9th begins, Holy Rosary parishioners are busily preparing their special La Festa treats like homemade Rice Balls (Arancini) and lemony Limoncello made by The Assunta Wine Girls who, this year, will also be serving LemonLimecello and Grapefruit
cello. On the 5th and final day of La Festa (Sunday) Pastor Jurek Zaslona will pick the winner of the “Super 50/50” Raffle. (Tickets for the Super 50/50 can be purchased throughout La Festa.) Last year’s winning ticket-holder won $9,079!

132-YEAR HISTORY Founded in 1885, Holy Rosary Church is the first Italian Roman Catholic Parish in New Jersey. Pastor of Holy Rosary Church, the Rev. Jerzy (Jurek) Zaslona, says La Festa Italiana pays tribute to the Church’s 132-year history and strengthens community ties. “Traditions and customs define us as a community and La Festa gives us the opportunity to become a more integrated community,” Rev. Zaslona says. “When people come to La Festa, they come for the music and the food, but they also come for the fellowship, to see friends and create happy memories for

Other ‘stars’ of La Festa are the Seafood Bar serving fresh clams & oysters, and the White Star Bar which offers craft beers & specialty cocktails. The Hourly 50/50s will be on sale throughout the five-day feast with prizes every hour. The popular Money Wheel is back in its original location in Caffe Italiano, located behind the church. TRIDUUM & PROCESSIONS Religious traditions are an integral aspect of La Festa Italiana, which honors the veneration of Maria SS. Dell’Assunta & San Rocco. A Triduum from Sat, Aug 12 through Tues, Aug. 15 will be celebrated in veneration of Our Lady of the Assumption and in honor of St. Rocco. On Tues., Aug. 15, at 11 am, the Feast Day Mass in veneration of Maria SS. Dell’Assunta, a holy day of obligation, will be celebrated by Joseph W. Cardinal Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D., Archbishop of Newark. A traditional Street Procession will follow. On Wed., Aug 16, at 11 am, a Feast of Saint Rocco Healing Mass with the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated followed by a traditional Street Procession. La Festa Italiana’s financial support comes from local sponsorship like Gold Sponsor Star Industries, and Silver Sponsors GothamWest, Monteleone’s
Bakery, The Brunswick School, Nicholas J. Grillo, and Commonwealth Trucking/Fleetwood Forwarding. Diamond Sponsors are Catholic Cemeteries, Sorrentino Electric, and Yelp. Riotto Funeral Home is the Silver-Super 50/50 Raffle Sponsor. “Holy Rosary Church and La Festa Italiana have been pillars of the Italian American Community of Jersey City,” Manager Richard J. Riotto says. “It is a testimony to the organizers and volunteers that have worked tirelessly for generations to preserve their heritage.” La Festa Italiana is Holy Rosary Church’s special way of saying thank you to its parishioners and neighbors, as it celebrates 132 years of serving the

spiritual needs of its parish and the Historic Downtown Jersey City community. For many years, La Festa Italiana has been the church’s biggest fundraiser for the restoration and upkeep of the church. During La Festa Italiana 2017, the Church will be open for visitors to see up close the magnificent beauty that is Holy Rosary Church. Visitors are also welcome to donate a 7-day Memorial Candle in memory of a loved-one. Hoboken Opens Northwest Pop-Up Park and Municipal Parking Lot The City of Hoboken has opened the Northwest Pop-Up Park located at 12th Street and Adams Street and a new, temporary 90-space municipal parking lot located at 1301 Jefferson Street. “The opening of this park is a milestone moment for Hoboken,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “My vision has always been for every Hoboken resident to be within a short walk to a park, and this new park adds much needed open space to western Hoboken. We followed a very strategic approach to achieve this goal that began with the acquisition of Block 12 for the Southwest Park and using all tools necessary, including the authorization for eminent domain.” Park amenities include tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts, a playground, spray water feature, bocce ball court, bouldering and rock climbing wall, a running/ walking course with fitness stations, a community garden, shade structures, BBQ grills, and picnic tables, life-size checkers/chess and surface games, shade trees, Adirondack and lounge chairs, water fountain, and programmable event/fitness space. The park will remain open daily from 8 am to dusk. “Long-term, the property will become a 5.4-acre ‘resiliency park’ that will also play an important role in protecting Hoboken from flooding by incorporating green infrastructure and at least 1 million gallons of underground stormwater detention,” explained Mayor Zimmer. Along with Hoboken’s largest park, the project will also include the construction of a new parking garage, which could incorporate community amenities such as urban farming, recreation facilities,
innovation space, and ground floor retail. The park and garage will be designed as one project to ensure an integrated design that meets the needs of the community. For now, the temporary parking lot at 1301 Jefferson Street is available for monthly parking at a rate of $195 per month. Spaces will also be set aside for discounted “parkand-work” daily debit parking for business owners and employees at a flat rate of $5 for any 12 hour period. The City created the park-andwork daily debit option for businesses as a less expensive alternative to feeding the meter (which is illegal) that also preserves valuable on-street parking for customers. The parking lot uses license plate recognition technology that will automatically open and close the gate for registered vehicles. Registered business employees will automatically be charged $5 upon entering the lot. The lot will be unattended and unregistered vehicles will not have access. To apply for access to the parking lot, complete the application at https://hoboken.seamlessdocs.com/f/1301jefferson. The community design process is expected to begin this fall and will take 18 to 24 months. A temporary pop-up park and parking lot have been opened in order to make use of the property during the expected 2-year planning, engineering, and permitting process. An additional portion of the property is being used as a staging area by the City’s contractor for the Washington Street water main upgrade project.

FOUR ‘GRINGOS’ & A TACO 4 Friends Open Mexican Eatery Off the Beaten Path Rustic Hip Sets the Tone at Gringo’s in Jersey City

t’s the only restaurant in town with a sawedoff milk truck in the dining room. Gringo’s, the new Mexican eatery that just opened a few weeks ago in Downtown Jersey City features a sawed-in-half milk truck where Chef Rick Truocchio and his crew prepare dishes like Holy Mole tacos and Guac. Darren Conway and his partners Rebecca Tarantino, James Ventola and Chef Rick Truocchio have transformed a greasy old mechanic’s garage on Coles Street into a cavernous casual Mexican bistro with picnic-table seating, cocktails on tap; and baskets of purple maracas to shake whenever the mood strikes. “The idea came about when we were at Pier 13 and talked about opening a space together,”
Nachos and Salsas Conway says. “I always wanted to do a Mexican restaurant, but what do a bunch of gringos know about opening a Mexican restaurant? I sat on it for a bit and then came up with the idea of an old rusticlooking space, a Mexican place off the beaten path, old and beaten up. I kind of ran with the idea. I designed the space and came up with the concept.” Gringo’s menu features Mexican staples like tacos and nachos with a twist. There are appetizers like Chips & Salsa, Guac, Grilled Corn Esquites, Avocado Bites, Toasted Cashew and ‘Peppa’ Hummus and

The Taco menu features the Buffalo Soldier with tempura jumbo shrimp and buffalo sauce, the Holy Mole taco with grilled organic chicken, and the We Found Nemo taco with crispy fish and mango-jicama slaw ($10-$15). “Our chef and partner Rick designed the entire menu and everything is made in-house everyday,” Conway says. “We have no freezers. Whatever we get on a daily basis is what we serve. Everything is really fresh and most of the ingredients are organic. We are getting a high quality product for our customers; and, we have vegetarian and vegan options, too. Most of our dishes are gluten-free.”
Cocktails on tap: the Ruby Rosa, Frozen Margarita, El Chapo and Poloco. Gringo’s extensive drink menu features Cocktails, Cerveza, Tequilas, Mezcal and Bebidas. The cocktails include the El Gringo Margarita, the Rubi Rosa,

I Wasn’t Expecting to See Myself in Pipeline By Mark Blankenship from Show-Score When was the last time you saw a show that wasn’t literally about you, yet was absolutely about you? When was the last time a play or musical got at something true about your own life? For me, it happened last week, when I saw Dominique Morisseau’s play “Pipeline” at Lincoln Center Theater. First, a little background: My parents loved me wildly, and I was mostly a happy kid. The cold fact remained, however, that I was a gay teenager in southeast Tennessee, so nothing my parents did could stop me from experiencing the hatred of certain people in my town. They couldn’t stop a teacher from casually commenting that medieval torturers “had the right idea” when they burned “sodomites” alive, and they couldn’t stop
a group of my so-called friends from reacting to my coming out by vandalizing our house. When I saw Pipeline, I realized how that must have made my parents feel. The play, which runs through August 27, follows Nya and Xavier, parents who feverishly love Omari, their only child. They’ve done their damndest to assure his success: They’ve taken him out of the rough public school where Nya teaches and put him in a private school instead. They’ve made sure he has money when he needs it. They’ve tried to remind him they support him. But as the play makes clear, these advantages don’t exempt Omari from being a young black man in the United States. His parents cannot shield him from the oppressive systems that send so many young black
Jeremy Daniel in Pipeline men in a pipeline from school to prison. Nya and Xavier cannot keep their son’s mind and soul (and sometimes his body) from being assaulted by racism. And so Omari gets in bad trouble at his good school. When Nya tries to understand why, his explanation has less to do with a particular teacher or classmate than with the lessons of his entire life. I’m still shaken by what comes next. In a series of one-on-one scenes of operatic intensity, all three family members confront
the blame, grief, and compassion this crisis provokes. Watching them face their feelings, I considered my own parents as they navigated their response to my sexuality. I saw them grappling with the dread their son would be rejected, tossed aside. I imagined them realizing they couldn’t protect me from the hateful parts of the world. Just like Omari’s parents, I know mine always knew I’d get hurt by something eventually. That’s just part of being human. But that can’t have

made their fear for my future any easier to confront. Happily, my life turned out well, despite my exposure to prejudice, and Pipeline sounds a note of hope as well. But I keep returning to Nya and Xavier’s desperate attempts to stop the world from getting to their boy. Their struggle has recalibrated something in my relationship to my own family. The play has touched Show-Score members as well. They’ve not only scored it with an 86, but also added incisive comments, like this one from Show-Score member Haynes: “Thank you Dominique Morisseau. Though none of the story was exactly my story, as an avid theatergoer I am glad to see characters that look and sound like me that made me laugh, cry and, yes, call out an ‘ummm-hum’ and snap my fingers several times.” Haynes speaks directly to my own experience: Pipeline isn’t precisely about me, but it speaks to me all the same.
